Maxwell, you were talking to me off air before we recorded this, that Carly Monogue's performance at the AFL Grand Final got you so inspired that you've actually taken up voice lessons. I have. And you're gonna give us an interpretation of locomotion right now.
I had actually prepared a bit of Can't Get You Out of My Head, and I was also gonna do the uh get some gold shorts out. Lucky this one's not filmed. Well, you can just sing it for me.
Can't get you out of my head.
Not quite my tempo, go again. Can't get you out of my head. You want it slower or faster? Uh that was up to you, but that was horrible either way. So we'll done everyone. Um thank you for staying this long. And welcome to vinyl club.
Welcome to vinyl club. It's nice to have you here uh in the club with us. In the club, with all fam. We all fam. Uh Sam, this week, I've speaking of being a little bit sexy, Sam. I've been reviewing one of the sexier albums from this year, Brutalist by Sachi Six. Or Say Six, like I. Say Six, if you were uh Sam, approximately February.
Yeah, yeah. Um Sam, this album, for anyone who doesn't necessarily know Saarchi Six or this album, it kind of puts this very intimate, sexy, delicate RB kind of blue-eyed soul sound, and it puts it next to like very emo metal. Very much so. Uh, and I would say almost to a T, you get those two sounds directly next to each other throughout this record.
And I think I I think for a lot of artists that try and blend two different sounds, there's kind of two main ways that you can do it. You can either do something like new metal, which is to take some little bit of both and make like a new genre where you blend them into one thing and you have like hip-hop and metal at the same time overlapping each other.
Or I think you can do something where you do like a little bit of each and you kind of go like we're gonna have the the RB, then the metal, and the RB, then the metal. I think it's quite hard to do that second one because I think it's quite hard to smoothly hand off from one to the other without making it feel jarring.
Yep, I agree.
I would say, as a general rule, they do it quite well across this record. There are moments that feel very jarring, but I think not necessarily in in a way that's bad. I think it's intentionally jarring.
Yeah, uh, yeah. Let's get let's get into it.
I think crazy you know the lyrics so well. It starts with besotted, and I think that song really sets the the the tone. You know, you get this kind of industrial, post-industrial synth kind of production at the start. It's very glitchy, very vibey. You know exactly what you're working with. The you know, Sachi's vocal comes in and it has this very breathy, super closely mic'd kind of feel to it.
And then at some point, about a third of the way through the song, hard switch, heavy, heavy guitars come in, it's punchy, yeah, it's it's it's quite tight metal, like in terms of metal, it's not like a big thrashy sound, it's quite tight, but it is heavy hitting. And I think it's very uh disorienting at that point.
But I think that sets the tone. I think there almost I would say, except for maybe two songs in this track, sorry, in this track listing, it does that combination of things the whole way through. Um, I think some songs do it better. I think Reverie does it better than Besotted and a lot of the other songs because I think there's this kind of smooth handoff where the the heavy part feels like the groove that they've built with the RB.
Yeah. And then I think it goes like in essence, it's taking that same groove and just making it heavier. You know what I mean? Like, so you don't have to feel like you're in a different tempo, you don't feel like you're in a different frame. Yeah, it just feels like you've like stepped on the uh on the distortion pedal and you've taken that same bit and just made it heavier.
So in in a song like Reverie, um Bassorexia kind of does the same thing. There's a couple others that also have kind of have more of that really smooth transition. I think what why it does it fairly well is that in most of these songs, they start with the the intimate, sultry, sexy kind of sound. And I think it sets the tone.
And I think they only step up into that heavy sound when the song reaches a point of the emotion, can't I can't get this emotion across to you in the original form. Yeah, I need to take this to an extreme point to understand the the depth of the emotion I'm trying to impart on you. And that could be sadness or frustration or like even horiness.
But it's like, okay, we've reached the point where I've described this to you in like a sensual, sexy, up close, mic'd way. No, that's and now you can fucking hear it, like how I'm feeling on the inside.
That's a good point. I didn't really think about it like that, but it's yeah, because you look at songs like Bassorexia, which is so it's like Chase Atlantic. It's very sensual, it's very provocative, it's very horny. Yeah. And then all of a sudden, Noah just comes in with a huge fucking chug. Yes. And you're like, oh, yeah.
Okay. Yeah. Now we're in the bedroom.
Yeah. And I think the songs that do it best are like Reverie, are like Bassorexia, where it's just the extension of that same emotion. Yeah. I think some of them don't quite know. Basotted to me kind of feels disoriented because it isn't necessarily the same emotion. It's the switch. And I think that's where they're doing their best is where they are the the blend between the two different things is taking the same, feeling the same emotional depth and just going, this is the extreme version of that.
Um, I think that's that's the that's the most positive parts of these records. I think where this record kind of maybe I'm not gonna say it stumbles. I still think it's a pretty good record overall. I think where it maybe reaches the end of that uh, like you know, that logical frame is I think that A, they may overuse that trick a couple of times towards the back end of this record.
Yep. And B, I don't there's times when I think this record maybe doesn't feel confident enough to do one or the other at some point.
I was about to say it starts to dabble in the middle. Yeah. I think they have potential to and they did it a little bit with songs like Uneven and Dolores, which are very on the pop side. Yes. I think they have the ability, and they look the album in itself is brutalist, like it's brutalist in style and in name.
Yeah. And I understand as a concept why they've gone the way they have, and it's really cool. It's like set up the foundation for them to grow from. I think next time they release an album, it'll be cool to see them go, Alright, we do the RB and sexy stuff really well, so let's do a song that's only that, but then we also do heavy really well.
So why don't we do the fucking heaviest song we've ever done and then let Noah just go beast on the vocals and yeah, like it feels like at times there's too much space when they go heavy because they drop these massive riffs, and then you're like, but all that space around it, I guess it creates an environment to bring the RB in, but sometimes you want that impact to really hit like an atomic bomb and it doesn't.
I to me, I I think they do both parts really well. And I just think I would like there's you're oh sorry, you're right. Hello, uh Dolorus and I think um Nepanthe are the two where it's the most this is the most of one thing and this is the most of the other thing. Yeah, um uneven a little bit, it's but to me, uneven doesn't feel heavy, it feels deep, it feels like heavy emotionally rather than being heavy musically.
I think also side note, Nepanthe kind of just sounds like Slumber Body by Ash Nico, um, which is quite funny to me. Go check that song on your own time. Uh I think it's the beats quite similar. Um, but I think I would love, as as you said, I would love to hear like how do you like well, they use this trick of like, okay, when we get to a point where the emotional depth is too much, we go to the heavy stuff and then you you feel it.
I would love to know how can we explore that emotion, that whatever it is that you're trying to get over in a song, how can we explore that in a way that doesn't necessarily have to step up to that thing? Or vice versa, if you're at an extremity and you want to bring it down, how can that exist without going into this completely different genre?
I think they've got the chops for both. I just don't think they necessarily try it too often in in this, yeah, in this record. Um so overpowered, they need to harness it. Yeah, well, possibly. Like it just I I think they they've they've proven that they can do both, but I don't think they've apart from those two songs, which are fine, I don't think they're the best songs on the album.
Apart from those two songs, I don't think they've proven that they can do both separately yet. Um, and I'd love to see a follow-up album where we explore those two things separately. I'd love to see a follow-up album where we explore other sounds as well, because I think it kind of has these two modes, and it kind of only has these two modes.
There are a couple of songs that play with a couple of different other sounds. Um, but I would like to see maybe something more electronic in there. I'd like to see something that's almost exclusively pop-driven because I think they have the chops again. Like the production on this is insane. Uh, and we, you know, when we talked to them, when we interviewed them, they were talking about how they would be producing in their house or their apartment, and Noah would just be like, yo, here I've got this song idea.
Come in here, put the mattress up against the wall, let's just bash out this quick this bit. And I'm like, that's such a cool to be able to deliver this awesome level of production with on like you know, this kind of almost shoestring budgety type thing. I'd love to see what that looks like if you put that into pop, electronic, a range of other sounds.
Um and and like Saarchi's vocals are incredible too. So yeah, I think all of the pieces in this album are very good. I think all the pieces individually are very well done. I think the way they put the pieces together largely works really well. I'd love to see both more pieces and different arrangements of those pieces.
Sachi, to your point, is an incredible vocalist. You look at songs like perfidy, insane. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But um, no, I like that.
It's a good analysis, all over. Also, this song is absolutely winning at the Scrabble Grand Championships. There's some names in this record. Nepanthe, Perfity, Bassorexia, Basotted. What was your favourite song in the album? I think Reverie is probably my favourite. I think because I think that's the best example of the the two different modes and how they fit together the best.
Um, I think that one, and it comes early enough in the record where you haven't you haven't gotten used to that flow and that sort of uh cadence that they have between the two.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And in the same tone, Baserexi is my favorite. So sexy. But it is, it is look, this is an undeniably sexy album. I need you now. Buy me dinner first, or unless. Unless. You've got some homework for me.
I do, and here's the thing, I've got a couple, and I just don't know which one I'm gonna choose yet. Well, that's a you problem. Do you want something actually? You know what? I'm gonna bounce off of Saatchi 6, and I'm gonna give you something that I think pretty sexy. Saaty 7. Saathi 7. You have to watch the first.
Saarie 6 and 7. I haven't listened to the didn't listen to the first five, so I didn't really know what was going on by the time I got to this one. Uh Sam, this is uh a very sexy record. Um, but I think it's certainly not a uh metal record at all. Leon Bridges. It is Leon Bridges with good thing. Um, this is obviously Leon Bridges.
He does sort of more in that RB world, but also the way that he kind of jumps into sort of some some rock and roll, some disco, some kind of almost dance tracks.
Uh it annoys me so much that the text is off center. Because I'm reading it like this.
Yeah, just just the tiniest little bit. Fuck. Um this this record has a little bit of everything in it. Um and I think what Leon Bridges does so well. I mean, obviously he has an incredible voice that he just brings to to every kind of sound that he's playing with, but then also just the the cool factor that all of these songs have, despite the fact that they sound very different across the uh the entire record.
He is very cool. Yeah, he's insanely cool.
Texas Sun, banger, dude. Fucking tune.
Crungbin, like, yeah, that combination of his voice, Crungbin's whole like kind of psych approach, just fucking cool.
Yeah, I'm a big fan, so I'm keen to get into that. Uh any vinyl thoughts, Maxwell?
Um, as I said last week, I realized that I've got a few on the way that I uh forgot I'd purchased. Um I've had a couple roll in that uh were also in the pile potentially to um to be trialed in a couple of weeks. But um I'm looking forward to I I need to get you know what I'm not good at, and I need to probably focus on more.
What's that? Is purchasing like sort of pre-ordering records so that I they arrive when they come out.
Yeah, but it's a nice thought to have, they don't always arrive on time. Yeah, but it's hard to know because when you pre-order an album, you don't know if the album's actually good. Yeah, it's true, it's true.
It's hard, you know, if you're gonna especially when they're asking 60 or 70 for a for a new record, and I'm like, is this worth 60 or 70?
I don't know. I don't know. It's hard, but it's also your only opportunity to get cool variants, and yeah, because you don't want to buy them from JB Hi Fi and then you just pull them out and they're black.
Yeah, I think uh I think the boys uh new uh record I might might be one that I get amongst poorly because I've liked all the singles of that so far. So the boys. The boys b B U O Y S. I was in like uh Ocean Boy Oh, not the TV show soundtrack, not the TV show soundtrack, no, no.
No, I don't mind that.
How about you?
Any final thoughts? None. Great, awesome.
