Was there an FBI conspiracy to kill off rock music?....no seriously.....

Was there an FBI conspiracy to kill off rock music? eh....no seriously....sort of, well Billy Corgan alluded to it on his podcast so I take it on face value and look into what changed. If we take Woodstock 99' as the last high point of angry dudes with guitars has it all been pop music-ified since then? On one level it certainly seems so, but we do love a conspiracy, could it be real, or is it just technology and culture changing....
