Yayoi Kusama - Into Infinity | #26

A journey through the infinite world of Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama – Into Infinity | #26

The first English-language episode of artaffairs is dedicated to Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026), one of the most influential and recognisable artists of our time.

On the occasion of her major retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, we explore more than seven decades of Kusama’s extraordinary career: from her childhood visions and famous polka-dotted pumpkins to the Infinity Nets, her radical years in New York and the immersive mirrored environments that dissolve the boundaries between artwork and viewer.

The episode also looks at Kusama’s relationship to Georgia O’Keeffe, the parallels between her work and that of Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, her concept of “self-obliteration”, and the deeply personal role art played throughout her life.

Yayoi Kusama died in Tokyo on August 14, 2026, at the age of 97. What was originally conceived as a journey through her art has therefore also become a farewell.

Love Forever.
