Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley — Chapter 21
Victor is brought before a magistrate and hears the evidence connecting him to a newly discovered murder. When he is taken to view the body, the victim’s identity plunges him into horror, illness, and months of confinement.
As Victor slowly recovers, an unexpected visitor offers him a measure of comfort, while evidence begins to clarify what happened on the night of the murder. Even after his release, however, grief and fear follow him as he prepares to leave Ireland and return toward Geneva.
