Episode 34 — WAN Selection Framework: MPLS, SD-WAN, DIA, metro, dark fiber

WAN choices in CloudNetX scenarios require aligning connectivity options to business outcomes, operational constraints, and performance requirements rather than selecting the most modern-sounding technology. This episode introduces a selection framework that evaluates common WAN options in practical terms. It describes MPLS as a provider-managed approach that can deliver predictable paths and stable performance characteristics, SD-WAN as a policy-driven approach that can use multiple links and dynamically choose paths based on conditions, and direct internet access as a simpler model that can reduce cost and latency for cloud-heavy usage but shifts responsibility for security and resilience. It also introduces metro connectivity and dark fiber as options for high-bandwidth local interconnect needs, emphasizing that each option implies different levels of control, lead time, and operational responsibility.
