The Secret School Register That Sentenced Two Widows to Death

A waterlogged school register found in Sallow Creek named a seven-year-old who vanished from every official record, while a dry-goods receipt dated two days before a widow disappeared tied a traveling picture-frame salesman to her house - what began as a creek find would unravel into two deaths. Who circled the child’s name until the paper wore through, and how did a forged school and a receipt become the thin thread linking murder to cover-up?

In this episode, we follow the physical clues recovered from the creek, the Whitfield household, and the Varnell bureau office to trace the timeline and relationships that led investigators to questions about identity, motive, and concealment. Did the composition book and its folded receipt point to a single perpetrator, or to something older hidden in the township records?

Person: Peggy Whitfield, age 48
Date: October 1-4, 1914 (missing reported Oct 1; register found Oct 4)
Location: Orviston Road and Sallow Creek
Item: Crestwood Mission School attendance register, term 1910-1911
Document: Varnell merchant receipt dated September 29, 1914 (name: C. Snyder, care of Whitfield)

- The register entry reads "Whitfield, M., age seven, enrolled September 6" and that name was circled repeatedly until the paper wore thin.
- Every other student name in the Crestwood register was crossed out with a single diagonal line; only "Whitfield, M." remained circled.
- Peggy Whitfield was reported missing October 1, 1914 after Constable Del Osgood noticed her lamp burning and chickens unfed.
- A cemetery record lists "M. Whitfield, child, age approximately seven, buried December 1910, cause unknown, no relations" in charity row with only initials on the stone.
- A folded receipt on the register’s back cover is dated September 29, 1914 for four yards of muslin, waxed twine, and one quart of lamp oil, made out to C. Snyder, care of Whitfield, Orviston Road.
