The Armchair That Survived Every Fire - Who Moved It?

A single armchair sat upright on clean, scorched gravel forty feet from a town hall reduced to a skeleton - not a thread singed, not a drop of water on its deep burgundy velvet cushion. That same chair survived three earlier fires in the same building, its provenance tied to an 1902 estate receipt and a marginal name written fifty-seven years before another blaze; who moved it, and why did so many records go quiet?

In this episode, we trace the chair’s documented path through town ledgers, a physician’s underlined note, and fire assessor reports to map the facts surrounding the object, the people connected to it, and the missing inquiries left in its wake - could the chair be evidence of foreknowledge, or something else entirely?

Person: Philip Rogers
Date: July 6, 1991 (six forty in the morning)
Location: Talcott Hollow town hall meeting room and fire road above Talcott Hollow
Event: Town hall fires (notably August 4, 1934 and July 1991) and earlier fires
Case: Fire assessor report noting "deliberately removed prior to ignition" and foreknowledge

- Philip Rogers photographed the armchair from four angles at AM before the fire truck returned.
- Estate donation record from 1902 lists two side tables, one brass lamp, four ladder-back chairs, and one armchair; receipt signed by Herbert Crane.
- Physician Frank Aldiss underlined the word "exhaustion" twice beside Denise Osborne’s entry in his private casebook from 1885.
- County lien records show Roy Crane owed $412 in 1934 and reported the town hall fire at AM on August 4, 1934.
- Fire assessor’s report (page seven) recorded rectangular shadows where the listed furniture had stood and concluded items were "deliberately removed prior to ignition."
