The Eight Stanzas Buried by Denise Whitfield - Someone Must Count
A century-old slate with eight etched verses surfaced in river mud in 2019, four lines everybody in Cutler's Bend knew and four no one had ever heard. The slab was hand-carved and mineral-weathered in a pattern consistent with long burial-so who carved it and why was their secret kept for decades?
In this episode, we follow the discovery of the slate, the local connections to a children's rhyme taught for generations, and the archival and material evidence that ties the stone to a single person-what did Denise Whitfield intend when she placed those lines where children would find them?
Person: Denise Whitfield
Date: May 2, 2019 (discovery)
Location: east bank of the Sable Fork, Cutler's Bend, Pennsylvania

- Paul Ostrowski, with thirty years' experience handling historic materials, dated the carving to 1870-1890 based on soil compression and mineral infiltration.
- Denise Whitfield placed the stone in spring 1874 and died in 1911, carrying the secret of the inscription to her death.
