In 1900, 200 miners died in a single explosion. Some say they never left. On May 1, 1900, the Winter Quarters Mine in Scofield, Utah became a tomb for 200 men and boys in America's deadliest mining disaster. The explosion shot flames a quarter mile into the sky and shook buildings twenty miles away. They sealed the mine with bodies still inside. And every year on the anniversary, locals report seeing miners walking into the sealed entrance—lunch pails in hand, coal dust on their faces, still trying to finish their shift. This is Scofield, Utah.
