Shownotes
Sarah Mitchell separates palliative care, available at any stage of serious illness, from hospice, which requires a prognosis of six months or less and a comfort focus. She teaches the signs of approaching death, including mottling, Cheyne Stokes breathing, and the death rattle, the management of pain, dyspnea, secretions, nausea, anxiety, and terminal restlessness, the principle of double effect, family support, step by step postmortem care, and nurse self-care, with two worked scenarios on morphine at the end of life and expected signs of dying.
