[SPEAKER_01]: Robots radio, games, lore, stories, community, just press play. [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Fallout lore cast. [SPEAKER_01]: The podcast that explores the boundaries of our knowledge about the world of Fallout. [SPEAKER_01]: Wastelanders and Valdweller's welcome back to the Fallout lorecast.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here with John again from the 40K lorecast talking about the different episodes of season one of the Fallout TV show before Fallout 2 drops. [SPEAKER_01]: We just covered the first two episodes and we're about to launch into Episode 3. [SPEAKER_01]: John, are you ready to go? [SPEAKER_01]: First of all, how you doing?
[SPEAKER_01]: Are you ready to tackle Episode 3? [SPEAKER_00]: Episode 3, let's say come. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is fun as hell. [SPEAKER_00]: I, this is a TV show about maybe my favorite video game. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I haven't, I know I had to rank them, but it's gonna be in the top three. [SPEAKER_00]: Top three.
[SPEAKER_00]: As far as a series. [SPEAKER_00]: Nice. [SPEAKER_01]: Nice. [SPEAKER_01]: Are there any 40K games that are above it? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, this is it. [SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, it'll be X comes number one. [SPEAKER_00]: No, X, X comes number one. [SPEAKER_00]: Number two might be gold box. [SPEAKER_00]: The T, T, S, R, uh, doce games.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_00]: D, D, D, D, D, D, D. I love those. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I am an old gamer, unfortunately, I play XCOM series, and when I say XCOM, I don't mean the new ones I play the heck out of, but I'm thinking, yeah, I'm talking UFO defense, all 200 UFO defense colors and large pixels and all of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Even tear from the deep, the nightmare that that game was apocalypse also not that game actually did suck. [SPEAKER_01]: You'll get more of this kind of banter in Retro Recall if you check out our new show where we're talking about these old these old games But here let's let's get into episode three the episode three launches with Cooper and his wife and What they're doing a little little flirting over at the little table behind the behind the movie theater whatever it's called the [SPEAKER_01]: Wherever they film the studio thing and and she's like, oh, I got a suit for you It's in your colors and we get the scene of him like trying to shoot the scene and then feeling like I don't really need to kill the guy Which is a wonderful like this talking talking about the like the last episode how people are going through these different moral dilemmas And how we can see him as an individual going.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, he's a hero He doesn't shoot the bad guy just because because again [SPEAKER_00]: I think this is it's such a critical arc for us, but we do know about him and actually we know at this point, but we're going to, all right, at some point, he, you know, no, he is the first, I believe it's actually going to be a Marine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we know he served, he served in the military, he's been to war, what I think he's meant to be is just one of these many times, it's a classic character, but it's a true character, it's these people's books, and also about it. [SPEAKER_00]: I went to war, I've seen war, war sucks. [SPEAKER_00]: right war sucks violence sucks and it's just going to be get more violence.
[SPEAKER_00]: So he is, that's what I call him a pinko in the first one. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, everyone's kind of picking on him, but it's like it's this element of, well, you didn't go, why are you know, I know what I'm talking about. [SPEAKER_00]: And so he or he is, he's executing the bad guy. [SPEAKER_00]: Because he's not just that he kills him, he executes him, right, and hits you with his character in the movie he's filming.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the movie he's filming, he executes the bad guy. [SPEAKER_00]: And the director's like, awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: He's saying, hey, I don't think that's what I should be doing. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: And the director basically calls him a pussy, if a lack of a better phrase there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he gets mad at him. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's this idea of Cooper is... [SPEAKER_00]: a good person, which I think is critical because we haven't seen this so far. [SPEAKER_00]: We saw him slaughter some people in the first one. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: He's a cold-blooded hunter murder in the second second episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: And now this third episode, while he's still human regaining this, no, no, he's actually a good person. [SPEAKER_01]: he's got a moral compass. [SPEAKER_01]: It also shows us a glimpse of the way the society has transitioned. [SPEAKER_01]: It used to be them. [SPEAKER_01]: They're cowboy hero movies.
[SPEAKER_01]: The cowboy hero would do the right thing and turn the guy into the to the cops or whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: But now this new movie they're doing. [SPEAKER_01]: They fired. [SPEAKER_01]: the writer who was a kami because he was too soft on these issues and now they want the hero to kill the bad guy because the situations become more dire, everybody's focusing more on themselves against bonding together, all of those themes are becoming very much more real to this about to be bombed world.
[SPEAKER_01]: you know and it's it's it's dark when you really really really think about it so we have that scene and then we also see a little bit of the chemistry between him and his wife and his daughter we can see that they were happy at one point but there's still a little bit of tension like there's still little things that they say that show that they're kind of not 100% on the same page [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of hinting that there's something there. [SPEAKER_01]: It's very subtle. [SPEAKER_01]: Then we get to, okay, back to the wasteland, uh, the ghoul finds Willzig's body without the head, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And then we also see him take the first swig out of his vile, his serum, to make sure that he doesn't turn, which is a thing that they kind of invented for the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, everything that before my life, so. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, why not? [SPEAKER_00]: But again, [SPEAKER_00]: You know, we can have a we can have goal communities. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm fine with it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I think flushing out Yeah, Laura about ghouls who are losing their flesh Is isn't necessarily a bad thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's just a very different than others, but it also kind of explains some things about Ghouls that have always been a question like how do you know if you're turning and if you're turning can you stop yourself from turning and Does everybody turn well if you can take the serum then maybe you don't or if a tree grows out of your head [SPEAKER_01]: Or if you just become, yeah, I love something.
[SPEAKER_00]: Something in the world. [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of foolish, but not at the same time, and eventually everyone knows how old. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, his name's Bob. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, Bob the tree in Harold's head. [SPEAKER_01]: So then we have Lucy, who's now acclimated to having Willzig's head with her and is talking to the head and notices that there's a little something that kind of shocks her when she touches it in the back of his head.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, and then puts a tracking device in his nose. [SPEAKER_01]: So we've got that going on with Lucy. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know any thoughts about that scene. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's more than seen afterwards where she gets to Hollywood Boulevard. [SPEAKER_00]: It's extra maggots as I'm using California.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I reckon there's times you get the recognizes areas and so it's Hollywood Boulevard, which also means worth the bone yard. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but it's interesting to me about that. [SPEAKER_00]: It's how much water there was because you know, I'm when I'm watching the show You know, I'm trying to place it.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the one of the things that for me going through the show is when is this show? [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously I can look it up now. [SPEAKER_00]: They are thank you all the fans the show for writing it all down But when I'm consuming the show, try to figure out all right Where in the series does this thing sit right and right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Have I been to this location in a game? [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because all we've seen the brotherhood, but the brotherhood weren't fallout one. [SPEAKER_01]: So that could be they can be a time It's also it's also years after the events of fallout one of fallout two. [SPEAKER_00]: So Where they are but yeah, but it's that piece of like it you have to kind of can't really I've either looked right up like when was each of these games So I'm kind of look I'm trying to watch and sing okay, so now we see the bone yard is not the bone yard Nebula [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's been, I mean, since Fallout 1, that when is that 70, 80, 90 years?
[SPEAKER_01]: So like that, it's a, I try to pull the numbers up in my head as we talk, but it's a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: A lot, like even to the time period of Fallout 1, this is significantly later. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I will be honest. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it took a nuclear bomb to the face. [SPEAKER_00]: It sure probably takes more than 70 years to turn green.
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's just, well, I did an episode of this early on. [SPEAKER_01]: It turns out, this is one of those things [SPEAKER_01]: It's only, the amount of time it takes for radiation in most real-world bomb locations to become livable again, it's like 20 years, it's not that long. [SPEAKER_01]: Really?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so for example, people are living in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. [SPEAKER_01]: Those are bomb in the 40s. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, those are like the plant life came back people can live there. [SPEAKER_01]: Like the background radiation levels dropped enough with clean up that People can live there.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's it's not as detrimental as you think so it's like hundreds of years later Yeah, and I think it's this thing because we see shows like this or games where we go Oh, this the whole world got bombed in there's radiation everywhere forever now It's actually isn't like that so I mean there's always more nuance to it than just that depends on other stuff going on But yeah, you've got that [SPEAKER_01]: So we've got Lucy with the head, we transitioned to Maximus dealing with his armor because it got cut in like the you know it's been a little bit broken due to his fight with the ghoul and he has to go get this piece for it and then he has to sell his teeth in order to get the piece for it and then she just solders it with one quick little solder and then it's done it's fixed and he's like oh
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we have the fight with the guys who are trying to steal the armor. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course. [SPEAKER_00]: And they can't use it either. [SPEAKER_00]: So this is his first little moment of figuring out how to use power armor. [SPEAKER_00]: Where you can see it starts to actually make sense to him.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, how to fix it. [SPEAKER_01]: Not just like getting it and walk around, but like, oh, this thing takes maintenance. [SPEAKER_01]: I have to take care of it. [SPEAKER_01]: I can't just leave it somewhere. [SPEAKER_01]: Some reason still it. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of a lot of that to there, but for his character.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's also a moment where he is, there's like five dudes. [SPEAKER_01]: And he leans into them, punches one guy and then gets asked kicked. [SPEAKER_01]: And then gets up again and goes back in. [SPEAKER_01]: And we were talking in the last episode about how [SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of, he's got not the brightest bulb, but we finally see what is probably a, I don't know, a positive character trait, the tenacity to just keep getting back in there when he has a goal and he's got something he wants.
[SPEAKER_01]: In this moment, he does not give up, even when all signs point to the fact that he probably should, if he wants to walk away from this. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I like the next is when the brotherhood calls. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and he says, hey, you know, he has to Oh, no, I am Titus because it's over a box.
[SPEAKER_00]: They can't tell one voice from the other. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's all like that's interesting so like exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so it's kind of interesting because next comes, you know, a squire, you get this more of a little character arcs they do, where now it's had a new squire, of course it's that is.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's that's course it's that is. [SPEAKER_01]: Before that, I missed this and the Lucy part where she's carrying the head, I want to point out the fun songs. [SPEAKER_01]: It's fine, this is how this goes, it's just going to go all the way. [SPEAKER_01]: So the song says, maybe they'll think of me [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe y'all think you'll think of me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe the one who's waiting for you will prove untrue. [SPEAKER_01]: So again, like these little lines in the music that point to things happening in the plot. [SPEAKER_01]: So interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, Maximus is fighting against the armor back. [SPEAKER_01]: He gets in it right before Thaddeus shows up and then we have the scene with the ghoul and we'll Lucy who finds it a little deer [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Made out of human parts, like there are a few many fingers and human arms, and so it's hinting at the fact that this isn't just A giant Axelot, this is something else, which of course we'll learn more about later in the in the season. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we're back to the vaults, and we have the leadership, the new leadership of the three individuals.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a great moment. [SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about what's going on, and norms just not down with it, and then we find out that they have raiders all locked up, and they're acting like maniacs because they're [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what they do and they keep not just You're coming around to me and like, well, don't you want to be part of the society?
[SPEAKER_00]: You're right, I mean, that's and this is where I got I love this right? [SPEAKER_00]: Because this was always the thing on the vaults where like the idea was the people in charge and the vault understood like hey This is this but the people inside the vault are meant to be almost pacified down into this believing yes [SPEAKER_00]: You know, oh no, everyone's good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's everyone's wonderful. [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone is this and everyone just needs opportunity and they'll become good people like us. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And new, uh, new. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not these know, they're not right. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And ideology. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Important. [SPEAKER_00]: The most important part though is when they drop the watershed thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that was like the, yeah, it has the water ship broke and it'll come up more and fall out to the next season, but I mean, even they're holding it, uh, again, we're not on the camera.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have a water chip tattoo. [SPEAKER_00]: It's actually, I actually have the fall water chip tattoo on my arm. [SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the, I was part of one of my sleeves, um, because that was just so significant to me. [SPEAKER_00]: And what they're holding is identical to the actual water ship in the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they really printed these parts, like the guns, the water chip, all these other things. [SPEAKER_01]: They 3D printed them based on 3D models from the games, which is phenomenal. [SPEAKER_01]: And I got to see some of these in the thing I did the summer over at a GCX.
[SPEAKER_01]: And some of these like props and things, the same kinds of props they used in the movies. [SPEAKER_01]: Very cool to see them up close and see like, oh, that's actually the size. [SPEAKER_01]: of a, wow, that is big, like the laser rifle is pretty large. [SPEAKER_01]: That kind of thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was very cool. [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, so they're all debating what to do, and of course we have the drama and the conflict in norm kind of growing. [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Then we have more funny stuff with Maximus and Thadius, and Thadius, and Maximus is now treating Thadius the way Titus treated him, which, [SPEAKER_01]: He enjoys for a little while, but eventually he thinks things can change.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fadius also bullied him. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: It's important that Fadius was not good to Max and as so Maximus is like, Hi, first I'm doing this, but at its core, Maximus is a good person. [SPEAKER_00]: He is a high-end person in his soul. [SPEAKER_00]: But more important, this is again, a damn, but we talked in the last episode about this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm hoping that the character arc on Maximus is not that he's adult, because right now he kind of comes off as just this lonely person who's just looking for. [SPEAKER_00]: anyone to kind of spend time with because he's alone and he, you know, he's sad. [SPEAKER_00]: And he develops into something a bit more.
[SPEAKER_00]: But in this era, he's just kind of like, oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And get himself in trouble. [SPEAKER_01]: I think the scene, let's talk, let's just talk Maximus and Thadius throughout this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because we can jump ahead. [SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be things that yeah, I was Jeff, you were here to be jumping in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk. [SPEAKER_01]: So we have, we have him treating Maximus and Thadius bad because he's, you know, harboring resentment and he's in a position of power. [SPEAKER_01]: Then that he starts fixing his like replacing the water in his helmet and he's like, what do you do?
[SPEAKER_01]: He hits him and then he asks him like, what would you think about Maximus? [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, okay, say something bad about them. [SPEAKER_01]: But he ends up saying some things that are actually genuinely kind of touching, especially for their scenario. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, yeah, I didn't think he was going to get picked on all the time.
[SPEAKER_01]: I figured we'd have new people and then he'd join us and we'd pick on the new people. [SPEAKER_01]: Which, yeah, it is kind of like, works so much great. [SPEAKER_00]: But also fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But it shows that it like it wasn't personal, which I think was enough to make Maximus go, okay, I get it.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a system. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just caught in the system. [SPEAKER_01]: And then later on, when they have to deal with the Axeladdle, it's the golfer, the Cheyenne Axeladdle. [SPEAKER_01]: Maximus doesn't do what Titus does, right? [SPEAKER_01]: They wait into the water together. [SPEAKER_01]: He allows [SPEAKER_01]: Thaddeus to lead in the direction that he's going because Thaddeus is willing to help.
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't tell him to go out ahead, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And then when the golfer attacks, Maximus stands there and takes on the golfer while Thaddeus runs up as he should get back. [SPEAKER_01]: Because on power, so he chooses to act in the opposite way that Titus chose to act in the previous episode, which enables both of them to survive.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep. [SPEAKER_01]: Because they got each other's back. [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought that was an interesting juxtaposition of like the dude who was selfish from the beginning and only selfish died, you kind of made a men's a little bit in a way with this other character and have now worked together.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what you see in my mind is Maximus, we're taking on the role that is the brotherhood are supposed to be, which is protector of the innocent protector of Drake. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what this is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because we're supposed to be that he has no power on restanding in a probably rate, but in a radiated lake with a giant axelawable from hell in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when it comes out, he gets him out of the way and he goes and fights the axelaw, because he is the night there to actually fill the monsters. [SPEAKER_01]: which is what Lucy thinks when she sees a night and she's like, you're a night like she's thinking fairy tales that she grew up with because she grew up in a vault right exactly and he's actually being that in some way which is interesting here um then okay so let's go back to [SPEAKER_01]: Let's go back to Lucy and the ghoul.
[SPEAKER_01]: The ghoul is using her as bait. [SPEAKER_01]: She's talking about torture and he's like, honey, I'm just using it as bait. [SPEAKER_01]: This isn't torture, even though it is torturous to her. [SPEAKER_01]: And then, of course, the gulper gets the head and they have to leave because all the vials get smashed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: So the ghouls primary motivation now shifts. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, it doesn't matter if I get the head back. [SPEAKER_01]: He also mentioned that it takes a while for a golfer to digest something. [SPEAKER_01]: So he's like, I need to go get more vials. [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't tell us this.
[SPEAKER_01]: But we learn that his goal now is to get more vials because he knows he's on a ticking clock. [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't matter if he turns, if he gets the head back, because he's going to turn. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, say, and he knows he can come back and get the head kind of any time, because Lucy put a track on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: So, right, are we fluency knows that? [SPEAKER_01]: Really fluency knows that? [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he knows the lake that the GoPro lives in. [SPEAKER_01]: So, it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they go fine. [SPEAKER_01]: Although it's not in the lake anymore, because, well, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so so that happens.
[SPEAKER_01]: We get the the vaults where they're having the meeting and the different different people are explaining what's going to happen next and of course Norves still not going over well with norm No norm's not on board with whatever the vault is doing and there's a line where he says something and I think this is in maybe the fourth episode But he says something about how like have you considered punishing the people who aren't in the vault for the bad things that happened [SPEAKER_01]: rather than all of us, but he's definitely not on board with them.
[SPEAKER_01]: But you start to see the, I don't know her name, the three leaders that they do the votes on. [SPEAKER_01]: And she, the woman ends up in charge. [SPEAKER_01]: And we later find out that she is, [SPEAKER_01]: not one of them, just like, yeah, that wasn't one of them. [SPEAKER_00]: They're all, we'll get into the cryo storage later.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: With the, when dormed discovers that one, that's, that one's fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, but we're starting to see that she is a bit more prepared and a little bit more on top of things than the other two guys that they come across as a joke and she comes across as an authority.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but one of those times she comes across the authority though with almost still like an innocence to it But it's a fake innocence. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the thing. [SPEAKER_00]: And then obviously it's done really well. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah exactly it's not a like Because when you write my very first watch and the first time through you're like just almost like at the actor is doesn't know their role And then later you realize, oh, no, the actor knew exactly the role they were playing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which is you have to be around these people because of you who she really is. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: So [SPEAKER_01]: Right, right. [SPEAKER_01]: So those scenes are interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: We get little hints of the blonde woman. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, a frigate or name, the one with the eye patch.
[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, you know, like her husband got killed and she's talking to Norm and there's some stuff going on there where she's looking to look like she's on the same page as Norm is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we probably should kill these raiders that it's just going to get worse, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right, but we don't know that she's part of Valtec and Uncley if yet, but we find that out later.
[SPEAKER_01]: Then I've got to skip to head. [SPEAKER_01]: I've got to find where I am in my notes. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, the discussion about like how we should integrate these raiders into society. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think Shakespeare's too far, we should teach them the manual content. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, okay, yeah, Shakespeare's too far, but like modern philosophy is where we're going to start, or calculus are like, okay, great, cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's all ridiculous, and it shows how to touch it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was, it's great. [SPEAKER_00]: It's funny. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, what are you doing? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, we have a conversation where, um, I know, definitely will point this out because it plays into the themes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lucy is being tortured. [SPEAKER_01]: She gets let down by the goal and basically she's like, well, you shouldn't do this and he's like, why? [SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, because of the golden rule, which is due to others as you would have them do on to you, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Which is hilarious because in this scenario it feels like it's totally not going to help her out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but [SPEAKER_01]: the justification norm has where in this is where this is the thing I mentioned early, not our job to help them due to them what they would do to us, which is the opposite. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the inverted golden rule. [SPEAKER_01]: So again, we're seeing just juxtapositions of the two very far sides of the moral spectrum and how both of them are clearly terrible decisions to make in the wrong situation.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're they're they're just opposed with each other, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was genius because you have one and then you have the complete opposite And in both scenarios, it's the wrong answer [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, I mean, long answer every time. [SPEAKER_01]: Not, not, but in that specific scenario.
[SPEAKER_00]: To you see, all right, make sure that you're the joke. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you did it right. [SPEAKER_00]: It is, they're both, well, it's interesting because they're both, you know, delivering a message that actually probably is correct, but as a nantvist, people are talking to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lucy is telling the Google, hey, you need to be nice to people and the Google's like, no, I do not. [SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I won't just make a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: We need to be mean to these people. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like why we always should ever be as kind like they tried to murder us Right, that's usually like they actually did murder quite a few of us right so maybe there's a place that where these things make sense But not in this situation.
[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe we should take every situation based on what's going on So it's another one of those you know plays into that theme of like everybody is naive in some way and those things can be at odds with each other [SPEAKER_01]: But what is the right answer? [SPEAKER_01]: What is the best answer?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that depends. [SPEAKER_01]: So you have, let's see, I'm looking through this again. [SPEAKER_01]: They get through the golfer thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we're down at the end of the episode. [SPEAKER_01]: And there's the goal and Lucy and Lucy's like, hey, can I get some of that water and the goal pours it out?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't realize initially watching this episode until the next episode that that water is probably radiated. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: It wouldn't have done any good. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he or drink it all he wants. [SPEAKER_00]: It's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: But he's not a joke about blaming that to her.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, no, hey, no, this is what you can't drink. [SPEAKER_01]: So don't even try because he just doesn't care at least in this moment. [SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we go back to the set. [SPEAKER_01]: Cooper comes out in the fall. [SPEAKER_00]: You have the big reveal.
[SPEAKER_01]: the big reveal, and it's the whole like he's posing, nothing really is working, and then what if I do a thumbs up, and then that becomes the vault boy that becomes the thumbs up. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love that they show this version of the thumbs up after the first episode where they explain the original source of the thumbs up as being determining the size of the mushroom cloud and if you're too close.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now which is why the vault voice thumbs up is that I Arms like and they made it for the show is yeah, it's it's they almost locked out. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it's not just that I've rid of thumbs up It is a locked out thumbs up Right, yeah, so there's a there thumbs up. [SPEAKER_01]: It has two meanings.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's both hey is that is that mushroom cloud too close But it's also a thumbs up the vault boy. [SPEAKER_01]: You can trust me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that kind of thing [SPEAKER_01]: So this is interesting, and I remember being a little surprised when for seeing this that like, Oh, Cooper, is that a vault boy?
[SPEAKER_01]: That's he becomes their poster child. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he becomes their symbol. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be honest. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't love that. [SPEAKER_00]: It feels a little manufactured. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it felt like a, we don't have to connect this much stuff guys. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't want, I never want to see lost again.
[SPEAKER_00]: Where nothing's connected by the end, you know? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you don't have to wrap. [SPEAKER_00]: everything up into a few things. [SPEAKER_00]: It's okay if the vault boy's just the vault boy. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, Cooper's not a boy. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a couple. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a few different layers to this and all in vault boys.
[SPEAKER_00]: His vault boy is for those of us who played the game, which they get ever listening to as I'm assuming. [SPEAKER_00]: That's a special place in our heart. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of those vault boy animations were always amazing. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually just found my manual the other day.
[SPEAKER_00]: I still have my fallout to have a manual. [SPEAKER_00]: Nice! [SPEAKER_01]: Nice! [SPEAKER_01]: So this episode ends and I love one of the last things he says is he says does it block radiation talking about the suit? [SPEAKER_01]: The vault suit? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it doesn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And his wife, like, [SPEAKER_01]: She, to she answer or she kind of looks over at the other guy and he's like, yeah, the woman from the two from Vault Tech goes, yeah, oh, yeah, it does, but she clearly makes a face that shows that she knows it doesn't, which is it is not at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: Early hint, this is an early hint in this episode, episode three, that she knows more about what's going on in Vault Tech than we were prepared to find out exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was cool. [SPEAKER_01]: These little subtle hints. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is why I continue to look for these little hints for things that haven't revealed yet because the writers clearly do this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like a few episodes from now, we see her walk working for Valtek. [SPEAKER_01]: We see that she is in a position of power and she would know these things, right? [SPEAKER_01]: But as this point right now, we're just like, oh, maybe she had some connections with the Valtek reps for and got him a, you know.
[SPEAKER_01]: But an opportunity, who knows? [SPEAKER_00]: We don't really know how connected or how important his wife is. [SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to get it as we get through that no, she's actually very far up and vault deck. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and these little hints, like little hints about like she knows about that vault, so you're not in anything radiation shows us that like she's way more informed than we thought.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, all right. [SPEAKER_01]: So, I feel like this was a transitional episode. [SPEAKER_01]: How did you get that? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a third episode. [SPEAKER_00]: That's why it should be. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, can't it lead to that? [SPEAKER_00]: That's where if you're, I mean, [SPEAKER_00]: This is one of the network TVs kind of boring because they did 24 episodes.
[SPEAKER_00]: It just takes just too many, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, but it's my British TV 10. [SPEAKER_00]: So you better because they can keep it at like an 8 to 12. [SPEAKER_00]: Right, which is the streaming formula that's That's why we're watching while the streaming formulas do that close to make for Ms.
[SPEAKER_00]: Realize that actually [SPEAKER_00]: You know, when you when there was no other TV options people would sit through 24 episodes when you have choices It's not you know, yeah, here are 24. [SPEAKER_00]: Once you get above 12, these kind of start to push a little bit so everything needs to be 8 to 12 And so here we are we are there's 8 episodes in the season [SPEAKER_00]: Sort of because with varying lengths you are now hitting somewhere around 25 and a half You know 20 not quite 30% of the weight of the series.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now we have to add the twists. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's start being okay. [SPEAKER_00]: There are some [SPEAKER_00]: serious reveals that are still to come. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's what that's why I think this episode did good job of setting up. [SPEAKER_00]: We did it because the next episode you get a lot of reveals next episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like we get an episode four episode four feels more like something that was done for us for fans of Fallout. [SPEAKER_00]: This was for us. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I feel like this was a, we have to take the characters from here to there, in the episode. [SPEAKER_01]: And we need to fill in a little bit more about the way the world works.
[SPEAKER_01]: We got to see a yow, but like mutated bears aren't the craziest things out there. [SPEAKER_01]: There's other stuff, so we've got the deal with that. [SPEAKER_01]: We also had to have something happen with the McGuffin. [SPEAKER_01]: The McGuffin has now, should it, like, changed hands?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's that's things are changing. [SPEAKER_01]: We also had some character moments with Lucy in the Google and with Maximus and Thatties and I think that it kind of it It hits all of those things those things all would have been necessary if you would have cut this out and just kind of moved the story forward without it It wouldn't have made sense.
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's a kind of a necessary building episode to feature stuff [SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of the way I feel. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I think, as we get the episode four now, episode four, we can feel a bit more like tying in the fallout universe into the show a bit more. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'd answer some questions.
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's move in episode four, because it starts with the Google and Lucy visiting a Google who [SPEAKER_01]: Cooper Knows and has known for a while now, who is in the midst of turning, which fills in a lot of gaps, especially for non-follow people as to like, this is what happens when you run out of those vials.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, this is, I mean, this is the Google episode. [SPEAKER_01]: This episode has the rules in it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's actually called the ghouls. [SPEAKER_00]: The episode actually called the ghouls. [SPEAKER_00]: This one, I like the episode, but I don't love the vial thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's your spanish personally. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like it was it. [SPEAKER_01]: It feels like it is something that they made for the non-follow audience to give them to give a physical thing that can build. [SPEAKER_01]: So one of the things you do in writing is that you always need some way of building tension, sometimes it's a ticking clock, sometimes it's an amount of something that's running out, sometimes it's a distance that needs to be traveled.
[SPEAKER_01]: There needs to be a way for the audience to visualize [SPEAKER_01]: These are the stakes, this is the thing building the tension and this is where we are at in that, in that, you know, exchange. [SPEAKER_01]: So I think it was probably included because of that, but here's the other thing that I've learned about Bethesda is that especially doing elder scroll stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's things, there's stuff that I've discovered in going back and reviewing the books from inside Elder Scrolls 2. [SPEAKER_01]: And that stuff and some of the behind-the-scenes conversations that happened back there and some of the things that they were hinting at they had planned out the events of Skyrim back in the late 90s Which is crazy Crazy to think about and I know Bethesda wasn't wasn't around for fall one fall at two.
[SPEAKER_01]: They picked it up at fall at three [SPEAKER_01]: But that doesn't mean that even back in Fallout 3 in the late 2000 mid 2000s when they were going to fall at 3, that they weren't already using some of the information that was left over from interplay, from the stuff that we don't have of course, and they bought the rights of the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: They also got some of the engineers, and they did get people who were part of the original game to come over. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: That's it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's all there. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, it's this [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the thing with the ghouls, this is the issue with any time you make a game span as much as fall as span, you're going to get some things that people go, hey, this doesn't make sense any time with any time you change writers.
[SPEAKER_01]: every time you change writers you're going to have something change and in a video game you have dozens of writers over decades you know so yeah that's going to change but back to my point I wouldn't be surprised if the concept of something like the goals need to take a certain [SPEAKER_01]: Serum, the ghouls need to be constantly rejuvenated with radiation, the ghouls need to be on drugs all the time.
[SPEAKER_01]: Something, some of those conversations probably happened in the past. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is one of those, where they were like, okay, here's an opportunity to use that idea that we just haven't really fleshed out yet. [SPEAKER_01]: So my, my thought is that this wasn't something they just invented six months before filming the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't think that Bethesda would have been okay with the writers from Amazon just saying hey, how about we do this now and they're like, no Yeah, this is all the module property right. [SPEAKER_00]: No, so you're right. [SPEAKER_00]: This probably did exist somewhere, and That doesn't mean you have to like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You could still look like it like that's that's like we are hinted this week the fall at five is coming so we know fall at five is coming. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I thought it was maybe this'll be part of fall at five [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean it's already part of the 76 updates with like you can take a serum you can become a ghoul you can take serum in order to lower your feral meter and all of that so that's definitely part of it so okay so we we see this guy we see Cooper put him out of his misery which Lucy doesn't understand because she doesn't know where he's going what's going to happen to him yeah the fact that he was about to eat her face or whatever um and then we have uh the scene with the vaults and they're you skipping your piece because it's actually really important to go
[SPEAKER_00]: He then says he then can't have the world and eats Roger. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he's not, he doesn't eat him. [SPEAKER_01]: He digs out his organs. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what it is. [SPEAKER_01]: And he's not digging out the organs to eat them himself. [SPEAKER_01]: He's digging out the organs because the organs are valuable.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because as we find out later in this episode, the reason those two dudes are keeping all the ghouls locked up is that they're using them to make the serum. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: So his organs are valuable for harvesting for more serum to keep them from going [SPEAKER_01]: He's gonna eat him, which is not really the case.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we get to the vaults and we've got the two guys talking to the prisoner and that doesn't go anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we have Norm talking to the lady if I wish I could remember her name. [SPEAKER_01]: And we got a little bit more glimpse that, like, she's... [SPEAKER_01]: Again, she knows something.
[SPEAKER_01]: She knows she knows more. [SPEAKER_00]: She knows something. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she's very because she's very calm The other ones are a bit more adulty and she's the one who's very calm and collected and seems to have just a bit more Understanding but she's also getting subtle hints to norm there are more warnings [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, hey, maybe get in line here. [SPEAKER_01]: She says a few things that are interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: Before that, real quick, just founded my notes, the two guys when they're talking to the prisoners refer to him as this creature, which goes into that thing I talked about last episode about how even the people of Valtek subconsciously are dehumanizing these other individuals.
[SPEAKER_01]: Even though they think that they're treating them like people and giving them an opportunity to grow and become better humans Deep down they see them as animals. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so she's talking to Norm she said there the which likes and pie all of that Norm says I hid because he feels guilty.
[SPEAKER_01]: He feels like he's a coward. [SPEAKER_01]: He feels like he's a chicken. [SPEAKER_01]: This is his motivation is to prove that he's not a coward And then she she gives him this line when clever boys like you are angry you don't want to see where that will lead [SPEAKER_01]: I thought this was, it's interesting on a few levels.
[SPEAKER_01]: One, she's like, you're the real danger of exposing what's going on with the vault, because I know what's actually going on with the vault. [SPEAKER_01]: And if you get to curious, you might do something that we're all going to regret, is kind of what she's saying. [SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, she's telling him, [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe accidentally you're not a coward and you're way more capable than you know even know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Well yeah, because she's building him up now we don't know why is it thing and in this situation I don't think it was nefarious I think she just she realizes there's a lot of idiots in the vault. [SPEAKER_01]: She's trying to rope him into the belief of the vault. [SPEAKER_01]: She's trying to capitalize on it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have, like, your father was our leader. [SPEAKER_01]: You could be, maybe you haven't found your place with us yet, but you're clever, you're smart. [SPEAKER_01]: You could be a leader, your words carry weight. [SPEAKER_01]: She's trying to find a job for him that keeps him provolts and not willing to do something that would get them in danger.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oops. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so does the opposite. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so I thought that was that was a really cool thing and then you get okay So we're back to Lucy in the ghoul. [SPEAKER_01]: She finds this pale of water. [SPEAKER_01]: It's terrible It's a radiated.
[SPEAKER_01]: We get the whole description about what's going on with that right? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, then we get the fingers thing He does is a finger he cuts her finger off [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, she bites his finger off, which is in the heart of the ghoul. [SPEAKER_00]: And then after he captures her, he gets payback.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: This would, this whole thing I'm assuming is setting something up before the next season because they just felt like an, this felt like gratuitous violence, let's say you're gratuitous violence, which the, the show doesn't really have. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was, it's an odd, the symbolic, I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a, it's an I for an eye. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the, the quote, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, it's what I'm getting at is more what happens later with the thing is later she gets the it's the thing about she's got to figure back. [SPEAKER_00]: So become this piece of it and then she gets a finger back.
[SPEAKER_00]: That whole bit almost has no purpose. [SPEAKER_00]: And the writers here are good with my writing standpoint, who cares? [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so she cuts, she bites his finger off. [SPEAKER_00]: He cuts her finger off. [SPEAKER_00]: But then later she gets the finger back. [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So why? [SPEAKER_01]: I think it plays into a few things. [SPEAKER_01]: When she when she met Ma at the shop in the previous episode one of the things she says is why you got all your fingers still yeah it it it it it's uh it's it's symbolically a few things. [SPEAKER_01]: It is setting up that to be in the wasteland means to lose things that you would never expect to lose like a finger.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so now she is a fish like she is becoming more and more of a wastelander and less of a vault Other because she hasn't doesn't have her original fingers anymore So you've got that it's showing character growth in that direction, but I also think it's a it plays on that hole and I for Not if you if you kind of might finger off I'll cut your finger off But everyone is just now lost a finger like it really didn't it didn't achieve anything like you're saying and I think that's the point is that It doesn't achieve anything [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm trying to find that the Luke Skywalker part of this, where it's like, you know, he loses his hand, he had a robot hand, and that was more like his father.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: I will change more like his, she's more like the ghoul. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it is it is exactly that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's moving her more into the your a wasteland or you lose your humanity bit by bit just like losing your body parts bit by bit or something like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it kind of fits all that. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so then he sends her inside. [SPEAKER_01]: He collapses and we get finally get a Mr. [SPEAKER_01]: Handy. [SPEAKER_01]: Which I thought was great. [SPEAKER_00]: What do you think about the Mr.
[SPEAKER_00]: Handy it was? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, first off me I kind of comes out of nowhere. [SPEAKER_00]: It's weird seeing a real Mr. [SPEAKER_00]: Handy because you're like, okay Yeah, there's like there it does have a jet propulsion on it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, you just you almost forget that that's a thing Yeah, why would you want that around your baby?
[UNKNOWN]: Yes [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and that's one thing, but I, you know, the accent was dead on or the sorry that, yeah, it's the accent's dead on the way Mr. [SPEAKER_00]: Handy talked and I, the whole kind of reveal on it is like, what are you doing? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to harvest your organs.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was hilarious. [SPEAKER_01]: He thinks is your finger because she's incomplete, like she's, she's damaged. [SPEAKER_01]: And then he's like, okay, I'll know that I think you're finger and she's like, well, I thought you used to sell me into sex slavery or something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, oh, no, that would be terrible.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just harvesting your organs. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Like and it's Matt Barry doing the voice, which is just great. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you're fan of Matt Barry, but I think he's phenomenal What we do in the shadows? [SPEAKER_01]: Have you watched what we do in the shadows?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so this I had to look him up for a good way. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's one of the vampires on the 10 make sense Yeah, you know he's he's been quite good. [SPEAKER_00]: He's been in quite a few things. [SPEAKER_00]: I've heavily enjoyed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, let's put that Yeah [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's voice is like the booty distinguishable.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like he's he's great Yeah, so she of course Has to deal with the Mr. [SPEAKER_01]: Handy and then we're over to back to the vault and Norm now has a plan He's got the Jello cake He uses it to lure away the lady who's watching the thing. [SPEAKER_01]: She talks he talks to the guy In you know on the other side the the radar guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, would you think about this scene? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, okay, so I like this idea of norm trying what this seems not as critical to me is more it's setting up with coming next, which is them then going into Vault 32 right because this is this is always the most interesting part well, that always Eskirt always to me what the most interesting parts of the later Fallout games one and two the vaults on that interesting little bit and two, but it's in three and four, especially three and yeah, they guess [SPEAKER_00]: where the exploration of the vaults are everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: You learn that's where you learn so much about what's really going on is in vault exploration. [SPEAKER_00]: So setting up a vault exploration into we're going to learn something was awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and let's align that Vault 32 was not so innocent like this idea that like wait a minute what a vault not innocent What like just bring it over there and they find out pretty quickly that it wasn't I mean the whole the whole arc around 40 about 32 is really cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, let's go into yeah, yeah, let's talk about that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, he and shit decide All right, we're gonna go sneak into Vault 32 and they do and they get into Vault 32 and they don't find [SPEAKER_00]: Raiders had attacked Vault 30 too. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: What they find is Vault 32 attacks Vault 32.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there are riding corpses. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and both are doing dead for years. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, these are heavily rotted corpses. [SPEAKER_00]: This is not a new thing. [SPEAKER_00]: You've got graffiti on the walls that kind of implies there was a rebellion. [SPEAKER_00]: We know the truth.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we know the truth graffiti. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, another another subtle point on the TV. [SPEAKER_01]: What's on the TV? [SPEAKER_01]: Nice eating each other to survive due to overpopulation. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: This is each other just like the people involved ate each other, they'll do each other because of the conflict.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so now, and this is a thought that's been next door to them all the time. [SPEAKER_00]: And so Norm has a realization that the vault 32 fell apart a long time ago. [SPEAKER_00]: But no one seems to know about this and I thought we were exchanging with vault 32 and Yadiyada. [SPEAKER_00]: and then you get the reveal about how did the raiders even get in?
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, yeah, yeah, and then it's like, yeah, that's the big reveal. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's right at the end of the episode where it's like, yeah, no, it was Lucy's mom and I was like, what, she's alive or she wasn't alive? [SPEAKER_01]: And she let them raiders look like, why would she do that?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the go to the pet boy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the go to the pet boy. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's that reveal too. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I like, I can tell I jump over it because it's more like the way that they, the show is these little reveals, I'm like, no, I like to do my sections and sections, but when I liked about this whole piece, was again, every time you go into a vault in the game, it is, [SPEAKER_00]: just a shit show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like every time it's either controlled by Raiders or they're barely hanging on because they were actually the wrongly experiment. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, it's one of the key parts of it, so I like they kept that going. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, yeah, some of the vaults suck. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it shows us that like a lot of times things don't work out because they aren't designed to work out.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're designed to put people in a pressure situation and see what happens. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, even involved for it, I followed for it. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what obviously happened in your vault where you come out of your cryogenic chamber. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 1111, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we went 1111 where it's like, oh, like we actually don't have enough food.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're going to do this and then the whole [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so yeah, so we got we got that and then we cut back to Lucy and she basically fights her way out of the situation with the Mr. handy. [SPEAKER_01]: She holds him But basically uses him and then fills it up his little cannon thing with a braxo or whatever And then threatens to poison them with a braxo and these two guys are like just high out of their mind sitting on the couch watching cartoons or whatever and [SPEAKER_01]: of this is pretty great because it plays into the fact that she is capable.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're finding out how capable she is in these kinds of scenarios, right? [SPEAKER_01]: She's able to think on the on her feet. [SPEAKER_01]: She's can get through it. [SPEAKER_00]: And these two guys like your capable exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: and these are guys are not prepared for anything even though they have one of the most valuable things they possibly could is all this vials of serum which any goal was going to give them whatever they want for writing a barter and yet they're just like sitting on a couch just watching TV show hanging out yeah and then they uh well what i like is that [SPEAKER_00]: You have the Martha, the Ferrell Gould, who's not quite Ferrell yet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, they let go, they let go of the non-ferrell Goulds. [SPEAKER_01]: They all run away because they're seeing an individual still. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, because Lucy doesn't know, because she's sitting there saying, hey, she thinks all these people are like her effectively, she has, but she's realized they're just being captured and being used for a murdered, this horrible thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, and some of them are sick. [SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't know they're turning into Ferrell Goulds. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: They just think that they're sick with something. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, because even earlier, nothing with Nicole killed his friend, was it Roger? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when he went into the pool, kills Roger.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same thing of like, she doesn't really understand what's going on. [SPEAKER_00]: That the Roger started to turn with that with that really, because she doesn't want to throw a goal is about sure she's actually seen one. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right now, she hasn't seen one and she thinks he's just sick.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's asking for a serum for whatever sickness he has. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but she doesn't understand the gravity of that. [SPEAKER_01]: And so yes, this lady comes out and she seems like this nice old lady is trying to keep Keep her her mind together. [SPEAKER_01]: Remember who she is?
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, that's not really the case. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is the scene where we finally see Lucy have to defend herself lethal. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because she kills her, which puts her out of her misery But really she's doing out of self defense because if she didn't pick up that gun and shoot her right in that moment, she would be dead [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I also like to see where she's like making them unlock everything and like, yeah, and then you're not that one, but I don't don't open that don't open that cage and Lucy looks calm and kind.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't open that one and that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, I also was a it was a nice is our first shot at a federal goal, so I'm okay because yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, Ferrell Hools have moved in the game again, and the older ones, they were that scary, but obviously it's even the three, four, and obviously new Vegas is a three new Vegas, and four, the Ferrell Hools are quick, they're running at you, and we see them attack the couch guys, and they're fast, and they're all in this.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a 28 days later zombie concept of like, what are the zombies we're fast and scary? [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I guess the genre of dead ones are better, but that's me. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [UNKNOWN]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so the fast scary ghouls and then we finally see and and what I love about the visual storytelling here is by the time she leaves this place She's wearing the leather shoulder armor.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right? [SPEAKER_01]: She's got her vault set her vault suit kind of down to her waist Which is symbolically showing that she has now moved on from being a vaultweller. [SPEAKER_01]: She's half-thaultweller, but she's now half-waste lander [SPEAKER_00]: And that's the arc of playing the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, start in our vault tech outfits, not all the time. [SPEAKER_00]: It often was all the most of the game. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not even as in it, you end up not in it anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like because that barmers, it's not actual armor. [SPEAKER_00]: It sucks. [SPEAKER_00]: So you move it into heavy.
[SPEAKER_00]: I get I'm going to more of the old ones. [SPEAKER_00]: But you'd always go, you start in your vault suit. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the first armor you could afford was the leather armor, which would look more similar to this. [SPEAKER_00]: And then we get further and further in, [SPEAKER_00]: et cetera.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's yeah, it's doing the video game thing and it's also showing that she is learning she's evolving her character is developing in a direction. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so we've got that scene and then we have a little bit more with them discovering what's going on on the terminal.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it's a norm that the [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And then we go back to the goal. [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy in the goal. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And so this whole wraps up. [SPEAKER_01]: She leaves the super duper mart. [SPEAKER_01]: She walks outside and she does the nice thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: She gives him a serum. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: She saves him. [SPEAKER_01]: And she didn't have to, and it mirrors the arc with Maximus to this point where he could have been the total selfish asshole, but he decides not to be, and that means that they survived the Galper fight, because he did the right thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: He took care of the other person that was with him. [SPEAKER_01]: And she owed the gold nothing at this point, and yet she gives him the serum. [SPEAKER_01]: She walks away. [SPEAKER_01]: but she saves his life. [SPEAKER_01]: And then I love the scene where he will first of all he goes in and he's like, cocaine.
[SPEAKER_01]: Alcohol, give me all the kids doing all the kids. [SPEAKER_01]: And then he sees the box of serum, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, I'm a millionaire and then he turns on the TV. [SPEAKER_01]: And the scene that's on the TV is him in the role of the cowboy, giving in to what the director wanted and killing the man.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's this, he doesn't say anything, but you can read it in his eyes that he's going, I've become the character that I fought against becoming. [SPEAKER_01]: there's some real is there's humanity still in that in those eyes and he realizes in that moment and it's so concise and it's so obvious when you just look at the elements that are visually in front of you [SPEAKER_01]: And the reason I bring this up is because so many storytellers, so many people who make TV shows and movies, fail at this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yes. [SPEAKER_00]: That's why this is beautiful. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is, I'll say to what we were just saying at the end of the last episode, right? [SPEAKER_00]: But that's what we're talking about when we're talking about the end of episode three. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a quick story arc, but it's a critical one.
[SPEAKER_00]: He has gone from, you know, we don't know much about him. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, we know. [SPEAKER_00]: When you think about the story of it, he's at a birthday party with his kid, then he murders a bunch of people who dig off out of the grave, then he tries to murder a bunch more people in the order of events that the show has given us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he kills a dog, saves a dog, so there's that. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, but he is, he's a bad. [SPEAKER_00]: He, it's a thing where if it wasn't, [SPEAKER_00]: He if he wasn't so ever present on screen, you'd be convinced he was a bad guy and even when he was ever present on screen, there was almost an element of, uh, what's that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that, that's not Benicio del Toro, the, [SPEAKER_00]: No country from our old men. [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, that's why my brand's going with places. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's an element of a no country for old men where you do see the the Protagonist or so the antagonist Right, so the question has always been is the goal an antagonist right and this is the moment where it you break if you put that question your brain of is he?
[SPEAKER_00]: Or is he just a anarchistic protagonist? [SPEAKER_00]: Isn't he a person? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Is this just someone who's very chaotic? [SPEAKER_00]: Good. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Is he an anti hero? [SPEAKER_01]: Is he somebody who's ultimately going to do the right thing in the end?
[SPEAKER_01]: But like he comes across like he's a bad guy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think that these scenes are hinting at the fact that he's going to have a humanity are he will regain his humanity and I wouldn't be surprised. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, as with like this show has a like the he has not just heroes arcs, it has the [SPEAKER_01]: What's it called?
[SPEAKER_01]: The hero's journey. [SPEAKER_01]: You've got the hero's journey, right? [SPEAKER_01]: The best developing for what seems like all three main characters. [SPEAKER_01]: You start with somewhere your normal. [SPEAKER_01]: Some motivation causes you to go do something that you wouldn't have decided to do, but you end up on a journey.
[SPEAKER_01]: You learn things from your dirt journey. [SPEAKER_01]: You change, you find some sort of mentor character who helps change you. [SPEAKER_01]: You descend into hell. [SPEAKER_01]: You make your way out of hell with whatever you succeeded in doing, change forever, and then you return home, but you can never really go home.
[SPEAKER_01]: right exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: And here is journey like we've got that going on here. [SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the elements of like fantasy storytelling. [SPEAKER_01]: The other elements of fantasy storytelling will be some sort of redemption arc and some sort of resurrection. [SPEAKER_01]: Somebody will have to sacrifice themselves and somebody will be in that person may also be resurrected.
[SPEAKER_01]: It might be somebody else who gets resurrected. [SPEAKER_01]: There's always elements of like there's always some sort of Jesus thing going on right? [SPEAKER_01]: Is the glue going to be [SPEAKER_01]: the Jesus character. [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy, well, is not going to be the Jesus character.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I think the Google will be. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, see, I view the Google more as Obi-Wan Kenobi is the wrong thing here, but it's more mental to Lucy's at a moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he has all the knowledge. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because that's the truth on the goal. [SPEAKER_00]: The thing is that Lucy is Because, you know, we're gonna we'll get to it later, but you know Lucy's father is a terrible human being right is where it turns out to and now She's got no mother and no father and she's stuck in this world [SPEAKER_00]: I could see the goal being the one kind of steering her through it, right, not right, but not intentionally not just as not necessarily as an Obi-Wan.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll draw a parallel here. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's like Fredo and Gandalf for something like that, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Like this is the hero's journey thing. [SPEAKER_01]: You have a character who goes through this. [SPEAKER_01]: There's another character that's wiser and knowledgeable of everything that helps them along their journey.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and off is the Obi-Wan Kenobi to Frodo's backwards because Star Wars was influenced by Tolkien, but but Gandalf goes through a resurrection himself and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see some sort of sacrificial death where the gold does something that sides against the surviving for the sake of surviving.
[SPEAKER_01]: He finds his humanity but gets himself killed in order to do so. [SPEAKER_01]: But then there's some sort of resurrection arc for that later on. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and this is really a cool. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, yeah, but no, I'm like, I think I think it's either a resurrection or it's a baptism, sometimes it's a baptism.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I eat. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, this is just common symbology that shows up in stories and so I'm trying to tell you what to do. [SPEAKER_00]: I look at it as more, like I said, I know last episode, I'll talk about how it's three lone wanders and the questions. [SPEAKER_00]: It loses obviously your main low wanderer and the question is more, what is because I do believe the ghoul is on a vengeance quest.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's what I believe. [SPEAKER_01]: I think in the end, he will learn that vengeance doesn't actually satisfy him and he sacrifices himself for somebody else to live, and he finds meaning in that. [SPEAKER_01]: I can see that. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the art. [SPEAKER_01]: Is that?
[SPEAKER_01]: That's it, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So, or he sacrifices himself so as daughter can live, something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, she's, she's been cryogenicly frozen. [SPEAKER_01]: like most of them have because but how did she get from being with him on a horse when the bombs went off to a vault I don't know but maybe they can write that in you know but like but that's what's so fun about this show is so many questions if this kids still go in so many different directs pull up yeah it's great it's going to make us so great [SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we got to wrap this episode up.
[SPEAKER_01]: The goal watches this little video in the episode is, and there's a song at the end here. [SPEAKER_01]: I always got to put out the fun songs. [SPEAKER_01]: It says, I can't open your heart, but I can dream can't I, which is while the goal binges on his stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I think that, [SPEAKER_01]: That symbolic of him, his heart being open to the seeing himself in the past and what he become, and yet he still has dreams.
[SPEAKER_01]: He still has something driving him into the future. [SPEAKER_01]: Why isn't he dead yet? [SPEAKER_01]: Some vengeance, his daughter, some running, is causing him to dream. [SPEAKER_01]: He still has some sort of human hope left of some sort. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's what the... Yeah, that's what the... Yeah, that's what the... What do you think of episode four all together?
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, it's this is where all these shows now the shows get down and dirty. [SPEAKER_00]: We're halfway through. [SPEAKER_00]: So now it is a, let's go, go, go. [SPEAKER_00]: And so episode four I liked. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a fun little dive into two things I care about a lot of vaults and you know, just life in the wasteland.
[SPEAKER_00]: The rules for Mr. [SPEAKER_01]: Handy and [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, getting the Mr. [SPEAKER_00]: Handy is hilarious, but really, obviously, I found the Vault 32 more interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: That was more what to me, because it was like, all right, how in every game you play a fallout, the faults are still a little bit different.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're all the experiments going on. [SPEAKER_01]: And there's a lot of environmental storytelling. [SPEAKER_01]: We get an environmental storytelling this one. [SPEAKER_01]: Like the guy who was stabbed with the Fusball Table Rod, [SPEAKER_01]: with a little the little vault boys on it like there's a corpse that's stabbed against the wall with that thing you know like there's all these little environmental storytelling bits which you find in the vaults that have gone crazy all sorts of things yeah I actually was trying to think it is vault city the only vault that was successful no no uh 76 was successful because it released people into the wasteland of Appalachia 25 years after the bomb drop so that was successful one on one technically was still successful by the
[SPEAKER_00]: You're right, because we never, it's right, but you're a successful and then the on-clave. [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks a lot. [SPEAKER_00]: So that kind of oops. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, there are some vaults that still are still running. [SPEAKER_01]: There are some that are successful in the fact that they are still operating their experiments, even though it's on-passed a point where that even makes any sense.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was New Vegas about? [SPEAKER_01]: No, it was just one of those. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, this is built to look like one. [SPEAKER_01]: There was, yeah, there was the vault on in the strip that became a hotel or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: Because that's the reason I bring it up is because we're going to get to that in the future episodes talking about because there are functioning vaults still, you know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, very much so. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're definitely are still functioning vaults out there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep, absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: So there you go. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, John, thank you for joining me. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I think this was a fun episode, too. [SPEAKER_00]: And that would be great.
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, as if that's a great thing for having me. [SPEAKER_00]: This is fun as hell. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's also nice to have somebody else to bounce these ideas off of, you know, because I can say, I think this is where this is going and you can be like, well, I think maybe this is where it's going and I go, oh, that's interesting too.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't thought about that and then we're just going to have to see, you know, well, and that's what it is because we don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: And if one of us is really right, then the other one gets suspicious of what their real job is. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have to I have to mention this sometimes I don't have any insight like I don't nobody is revealing stuff to this guy Like the one inside I got was like hey I got like two weeks head notice about like the next update for fall at 76 because But that was nice to include me on those meetings, but like I don't I don't know what's going on by the scenes with a show nobody's telling me [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, well, thank you for joining me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Make sure you check out Retro Recall. [SPEAKER_01]: I got to drop the game the new show about Retro games again That's gonna be up on audio platforms, but if you want to get the full experience There's a YouTube channel that we will be launching. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, definitely technically right now, but it'll be up Yeah, I think there's a 17th of November.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was I think when we're releasing it sounds about right. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was like the week of Like just a few weeks for now. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so [SPEAKER_00]: I'll remind you guys, maybe the 19th. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that week, at some point the week of the 17th and 19th will be one of those days in there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and we'll let you know, I'll remind you on the show and you can go check it out. [SPEAKER_01]: It's it's super fun. [SPEAKER_01]: We put a lot of work into it. [SPEAKER_01]: But if you have any nostalgia for retro games, I think you're going to love it. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's super fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we really are talking about some of these games from our youth. [SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about games that you probably haven't thought about over 20 years. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the ones, we covered some big ones, guys. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously Mega Man 2, but when was the last time you thought about Earthworm Jim?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And we play them for the first time in like 20 to 30 years. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man. [SPEAKER_01]: Does that experience feel different now? [SPEAKER_01]: They're so hard. [SPEAKER_01]: They're so, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: They're so hard. [SPEAKER_01]: And then, oh, and then I have to tell the audience the other thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: In a lot of the episodes, John makes me play the games, and I challenge him to do something in the game, and the loser has to then play a really terrible game at the end of the show, it's super fun too. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure it's more fun for you guys than it is for us, but when John fails, and I get to watch him suffer, that's a lot of fun, so hopefully it's fun for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, spoiler alert everybody, when they make a... [SPEAKER_00]: game off the movie cliffhanger. [SPEAKER_00]: They weren't starting very far up on the on that tree of success. [SPEAKER_00]: No, no. [SPEAKER_01]: All right. [SPEAKER_01]: So you'll have all that stuff coming for more fun things to check out soon.
[SPEAKER_01]: John, thank you for joining me again. [SPEAKER_01]: And uh, thanks for what else can how can people find your [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
