[SPEAKER_02]: Robots radio, games, lore, stories, community, just press play. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Fallout lore cast. [SPEAKER_02]: The podcast that explores the boundaries of our knowledge about the world of Fallout. [SPEAKER_02]: Wastelanders and Voltweller's welcome back to the fall at Lorcass.

[SPEAKER_02]: You got me and John talking episode six of the trap of season one of the fall at TV show. [SPEAKER_02]: John, welcome back again. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to talk about this one because we get to see a lot more Cooper Howard back pretty great war stuff going on in this episode. [SPEAKER_01]: we also get Chris Parnell.

[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, personal fan of someone who watched a lot of archer. [SPEAKER_01]: There you go. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Nice. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's get into it. [SPEAKER_02]: We don't have any new things to talk about at the beginning.

[SPEAKER_02]: This episode. [SPEAKER_02]: So let's just dive right in. [SPEAKER_02]: Galaxy News broadcast from Cooper Howard. [SPEAKER_02]: He's advertising the vaults, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: We get this line not made [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man. [SPEAKER_02]: This feels kind of bio-shocky.

[SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't it not? [SPEAKER_02]: Ooh. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, right. [SPEAKER_01]: There's an element of like, no gods or things. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, when I like your heading, I like your thought process there because what we're thinking we're getting towards is this idea of that actually is what Vault tech really is.

[SPEAKER_01]: Vault tech doesn't, but in a messed up way, actually just like bio-shock. [SPEAKER_01]: Vault tech. [SPEAKER_01]: no, no kings, no gods, because we are them. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: That's all. [SPEAKER_01]: It's all not accurate. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, then this is not an actual, like, you know, need you, need you, need my today.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is a full blown. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, those guys are fake, but I'm not. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we really start to set up the evil that is, this is probably the after the most covers the evil that is vault tech. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes. [SPEAKER_02]: So we get introduced to, but we also get this line about a three-foot lead, thick lead casing, keeps out rads in the reds.

[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that kind of thing. [SPEAKER_02]: But as introduced, he used to work at West Tech. [SPEAKER_02]: So now we can start to see this association between these companies and the people who seem to be moving kind of fluidly between them. [SPEAKER_02]: Which is interesting. [SPEAKER_02]: We have this comment about the armor the design flaws in the armor Cooper claims that that cost lives Of course West Tech made the armor and so now he's got he's got issues with him simply because he was on the front lines and saw that there [SPEAKER_02]: their technology wasn't as good as they said it was because capitalism or whatever.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Well the whole the whole concept was that the guy didn't really care. [SPEAKER_01]: That was that's what really kind of sets you up on of. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: He's got came from West Tech. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: So West Tech made power armor and the power armor would effectively seize up while they were in combat and leave you just standing there.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so the reds would just kill people and to it. [SPEAKER_01]: No, Howard's [SPEAKER_01]: be cause of this power, and the guy just is like, yeah, I really was never big into quality control. [SPEAKER_01]: That's not my interest. [SPEAKER_01]: Right, which is, and now he's overseeing vault tech, which means, hey, these are the vaults that are meant to keep up everyone's safe in a post-apocalyptic world, and one of the people in charge that isn't really a big QC person.

[SPEAKER_02]: Right, that's a great point, because that is one of the problems with the vaults, [SPEAKER_02]: And now we got to go out in the wasteland and fix it. [SPEAKER_02]: The things never seem to last as long as you expect them to, things fall apart, all of that, which is ironic because his line is time is the ultimate weapon, which is the exact same thing that tears apart, equality control.

[SPEAKER_02]: With given enough time, things fall apart because you didn't made them well enough. [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's almost as if his lack of interest in quality control [SPEAKER_02]: makes it more interested in the effects of time in order to beat people he doesn't like. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's because when he's trying to get at is that we can always if we just out last our competition.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: That's all we really have to do. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's odd because what I will say is that and maybe I'm wrong you're who's Voltax competition. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, they are primarily run by people who have interests in American companies and American government.

[SPEAKER_02]: So their competition is going to be international and resources and those kinds of things. [SPEAKER_02]: But there's that underlying feeling of we are the superior ones who know better. [SPEAKER_02]: Our competition is kind of our customers. [SPEAKER_02]: is the people that we are fooling into using our products.

[SPEAKER_02]: There's like the double-sided like thing going on like okay, who is that? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's a good question to ask because it kind of implies both. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's a piece of like, there's a lot of we have to do this. [SPEAKER_01]: We have to do this and it's like, why?

[SPEAKER_01]: But that's yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, there were other people dabbling with like end of the world resources that would help people survive. [SPEAKER_02]: But nobody to the extent that Valtek was. [SPEAKER_02]: So you could you could say, well, either competition in the space of, you know, like surviving the end of days or whatever.

[SPEAKER_02]: But that's not really what he's getting at, probably. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Then we find out that Barb set up a wrap-up party at their house without telling Cooper [SPEAKER_02]: This shows, this is the first glimpse that, I mean, is maybe second glimpse. [SPEAKER_02]: She sets up the interview with him to work for Vault Tech, as their promotions guy or whatever.

[SPEAKER_02]: So we can see that she's capable, she has connections, she's able to set things up. [SPEAKER_02]: But the fact that she does this without him knowing and just tells him after the fact shows that in some ways she's way more in control and also less worried about getting, not even just getting his approval, but just bringing him in on things.

[SPEAKER_02]: You're a married guy. [SPEAKER_02]: Would you set up a party at your house without telling your wife? [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, I'm going to have people live this weekend. [SPEAKER_01]: I would if I thought it was going to keep my wife and child from dying in the nuclear apocalypse that's coming up and we get a we get more information on this later when they're you know the post party, when they're the same in the hot tub together and she makes that admission to it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: You get to it. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: But that's where like because that becomes [SPEAKER_01]: That becomes the whole theme, I think, of this season. [SPEAKER_01]: We get a lot of culmination next in this couple episodes, but it is this piece of, pardon me.

[SPEAKER_01]: it's his piece of is barbed good or is barbed evil because Howard, we see him at this point being, he's a good guy. [SPEAKER_01]: He has a great moral compass, especially in this episode. [SPEAKER_01]: You said to really, again, who is the person? [SPEAKER_02]: Well, he's genuinely struggling with trying to figure out what the best thing to do is.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: And whereas his wife seems to be very, very direct in her motivations and we get a reveal that we'll cover later episodes that it's because she knew truth that he didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Had he and yeah, the whole question has had he known those truths would he have gone along.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's just he was trying to basically preserve her husband's innocence for like a better phrase while also not exposing her family to risk. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so there's something that's really interesting about Barb that plays through the rest of this season and it's that the question of is she really doing this for her family and for Cooper and for herself because she realizes that the options are limited.

[SPEAKER_02]: She's in a rock in a hard place and she just has to pick the best result or is there some actual [SPEAKER_02]: selfish evil kind of motivation underneath lying underneath that that we haven't discovered about her yet because she doesn't show up in that many scenes and maybe there's other motivation going on so there's that that becomes the question and what's so cool about all of these scenes with her is that it kind of toes the line and doesn't it won't the scenes want to tell us that oh she's looking out for her best interest but then we're still suspicious so which one is it and we never really seem to get the definitive answer on that [SPEAKER_01]: I think we will in season two.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's my view point because of how season one ended. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just don't want to give too much stuff up because we're getting there. [SPEAKER_01]: But we'll get to those at this end. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I think we'll talk more about that at the end of episode eight of like a, oh, this was Barb's purpose.

[SPEAKER_01]: This was with Barb was trying to achieve. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: So I think I think we'll see more about that, too. [SPEAKER_02]: I agree. [SPEAKER_02]: So we go to the House Party. [SPEAKER_02]: There's this line where the dog can't come into enemy territory.

[SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: For us keeping the dog safe from the enemy territory, which is all of these people in his house. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't want to be here, which is again a double on Tondra for Valtek is the enemy, or I just want people to leave me alone. [SPEAKER_02]: Can they just go home?

[SPEAKER_02]: I don't really want to be at the party. [SPEAKER_02]: but it also establishes that Kooper likes dogs. [SPEAKER_02]: He actually cares about dogs, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Even, you know, like we've seen glimpses of that, it's him as the ghoul, this is where that comes from. [SPEAKER_02]: We also get negotiations in Alaska, the guy on the couch, the mentions this like, [SPEAKER_02]: that some of the news that's going on with the conflict and the negotiations with which is which is a great thing because that's how a lot of the fallouts are.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it even like going back to the text versions of fallouts, your ones and your twos, but even your threes and your thores, you're going to get, it's the background stuff like that. [SPEAKER_01]: And fall out for when you're getting ready with your wife or husband, whichever you play, the news is going on in the background.

[SPEAKER_01]: The discs, I figured with their call of thought, my head, and fall out too, it would give me some back story as to stuff that was going on before. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a nice, like, I love this stuff in games. [SPEAKER_01]: You discover something to give you some history. [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, what's really going on?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I just hop in Alaska. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, these little kernels of a little bit of lower kernels that just kind of fall in there. [SPEAKER_02]: That's why we have the show. [SPEAKER_02]: Because somebody has to stitch all this stuff together. [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, and then we go outside and we have the server lady talking to Sebastian. [SPEAKER_02]: This is Cooper's friend. [SPEAKER_02]: He's the voice of Mr. [SPEAKER_02]: Handy in the show. [SPEAKER_02]: Not the same guy who does Mr. [SPEAKER_02]: Handy in the games, but in the show it is. [SPEAKER_02]: He's the one friend who showed up.

[SPEAKER_02]: I love that super early. [SPEAKER_02]: I was able to only get one friend show up. [SPEAKER_02]: They talk about communism sweeping Hollywood. [SPEAKER_02]: They hint at the world being run by people behind vault tech. [SPEAKER_02]: So this is another one of those ellipses, especially for people who have played the games.

[SPEAKER_02]: Like, hey, something's not very as going on with vault tech. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, he, he, he drops the info that Rob co bought the studio that the other friend of theirs was working at. [SPEAKER_02]: So now we can start to see this like corporatization of the world, which is happening in our world.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, how many companies are actually making products that go on the shelves in your grocery store? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's, they're all owned by like five or three of them, who's making actual content on media services. [SPEAKER_02]: I think there's like three or four major companies and that's it anymore.

[SPEAKER_02]: So we're seeing that in this universe. [SPEAKER_02]: And then the quote here, the end of the world is a product. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's just so much. [SPEAKER_02]: That's just so much in just one line. [SPEAKER_02]: This idea that on the surface, it's like, well, Vault Tech is establishing themselves as creating products for people who are worried about the end of the world.

[SPEAKER_02]: But when you turn that around, if that's your product, then you're going to do everything you can in order to sell more of your solution, which could be nefarious. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll be honest, you skipped over one of my favorite parts of this whole scene. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll go for it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, where he talks about, he voiced Mr. [SPEAKER_01]: Handy, and [SPEAKER_01]: the Howard system, well, I might say, pay like 10 million. [SPEAKER_01]: He goes, no, 160,000, but they gave me a robot. [SPEAKER_01]: And he goes, you never really is how annoying it is to walk into your own home and be greeted by your own voice every day.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, yeah, that's great. [SPEAKER_02]: Also, you know, World of All Out, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, in the world of fallout, $160,000 is like nothing. [SPEAKER_02]: It is the money, the inflation has skyrocketed, and that's like barely anything, which is kind of hilarious. [SPEAKER_02]: So okay, let's move on to the future.

[SPEAKER_02]: This transitions to the goal waking up to Rangers There's smack him due to his illegal actions taking over the business, right? [SPEAKER_02]: He's waking up from that scene where he took all the drugs and passed out all the drugs. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, and so let's just a quick little glimpse of a scene Then we get to vault four with Lucy and Max and The medics fix Max's arm.

[SPEAKER_02]: They pull out a human tooth [SPEAKER_01]: We just really a really cool moment of like because if this is When you make sure you pipe guns Then again, that's why I like to say if there's a little homage to when you would make your you have the ability to make your own rifles at one point We get [SPEAKER_02]: Right, yeah, yeah, and I mean, you still do that in Fallout 4 and, and 76, but yeah, this idea that like he would fill him with him in teeth and shoot the teeth of people because, you know, the ammunition's hard to come by.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, Vault 4 finds his armor. [SPEAKER_02]: They have surface foragers. [SPEAKER_02]: This is our first glimpse at like, oh, this vault works differently than Vault 33 did. [SPEAKER_02]: Surface foragers, of all 33 would never have Surface foragers. [SPEAKER_02]: What's going on there? [SPEAKER_02]: Vault for the woman who's talking to her this leader lady.

[SPEAKER_02]: She's not the overseer, but she seems in charge of certain things I don't remember specifically if they gave her a title, but she says her mother was a courier [SPEAKER_02]: which is a nice new vagus reference because we get curriers in new vagus, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Which is interesting, it also implies a lot, which we find out later, that many of these people came from the surface, which is completely antithetical to Vault 33 and Lucy's experience with being involved.

[SPEAKER_02]: So now... [SPEAKER_02]: it's a wonderful, like you keep on saying, season one is an introduction. [SPEAKER_02]: It is like the steps down into the pool for people who have never swam in the pool before. [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm in the pool, I don't know language, words are hard. [SPEAKER_02]: But this idea that like we see one version of a vault, now we're going to see basically an opposite to that.

[SPEAKER_02]: This one keeps everyone out, this one brings people in opposites. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to think there was a vault like that though wasn't there one in one of the games where it got resettled Where you went to one of the vaults and the people inside it had read they weren't the original There are a few yeah, yeah, there are I don't remember all of them up on my head, but they're yes one of them had raiders in it There was I wasn't here raiders, but there was one that actually it was a functioning society inside of it [SPEAKER_01]: I want to go Vegas.

[SPEAKER_01]: I want to say it's new Vegas, but it may have been Fallout 3. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not 4. [SPEAKER_01]: But when the new Vegas are 3, where you went to and the people inside the vault had actually occupied the vault. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's also technically in Fallout 1 to Fallout 1. [SPEAKER_01]: When where yeah, that's where you have to go rescue Tandy.

[SPEAKER_01]: So that's time to go rescue Tandy. [SPEAKER_01]: That's also That's the right person, but that those are raiders They're always whining where they they moved in and they sell that so that's kind of where this one reminded me of that You guys some original ball dwellers to learn later, but yeah [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so it's kind of cool because if you haven't played the games, then this idea that like, oh, the vaults can be this diverse and different seems contradictory we would want to assume that all vaults are made the same, but now we're going to get glimpse that like not only of all 33 32 31 [SPEAKER_02]: seemingly different because we get hints of that through norms storyline, but vault 4 is very different.

[SPEAKER_02]: This is significantly a different kind of thing, and we're going to see where that goes, right? [SPEAKER_02]: So, Lucy and Max are now bored, there's a song that plays the theme from a summer place by Percy Faith. [SPEAKER_02]: And this is the like, hey, you smell good, you want to have sex, you know, like it.

[SPEAKER_02]: Maximus doesn't understand biology and I know people in the the response to this season coming out initially were like that's ridiculous. [SPEAKER_02]: Maximus can't be that dumb but I think if you think about how young he was when he was saved and then the fact that he has surrounded himself by a bunch of other people and on top of it is not particularly smart.

[SPEAKER_02]: never really had parents, never really had a relationship by the time he was part of the brotherhood, they all just beat him up so we didn't get close to anyone. [SPEAKER_02]: He didn't really talk to very much of anybody. [SPEAKER_02]: He might just be that naive. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's not likely, but it seems possible.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think the idea is, is it real? [SPEAKER_01]: No, is it a good homage to kind of exactly all the other things you just said? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that's how I look at it more. [SPEAKER_01]: I look at it more as, [SPEAKER_01]: We're trying to show that he is this just kind of unknowing adult for whom all of information has been held from.

[SPEAKER_01]: He only has been given the information deemed I was about to say the word most that phrase most critical and incorrect. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: It deemed most valuable to the people above him. [SPEAKER_01]: No way. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: That's all it is. [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[SPEAKER_01]: So whatever we can make you do, we're going to make you not search for women, not search for money, not search for money. [SPEAKER_01]: Your job is to serve. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And we don't, we don't need our, the people living in our barracks having babies.

[SPEAKER_02]: So we're going to do that. [SPEAKER_02]: We're probably going to do [SPEAKER_02]: understandings about how any of that stuff works, so that people don't do things, right? [SPEAKER_02]: So that totally tracks. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a good perspective on that. [SPEAKER_02]: Then we get to Maximus and Lucy eating.

[SPEAKER_02]: Maximus thinks they're trying to trap them. [SPEAKER_02]: So he's the first one to get suspicious here. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, it's not Lucy. [SPEAKER_02]: Even though this vault seems very different from anything Lucy's experienced. [SPEAKER_02]: He's the first one who's intent is go up and go, I'm gonna trust this, something's going on.

[SPEAKER_02]: Which leads me to believe that even though he's not the smartest, [SPEAKER_02]: guy in the room. [SPEAKER_02]: He has certain instincts that have kept him alive. [SPEAKER_01]: He's, I think, a great term for him is survivalist. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that's what he is. [SPEAKER_01]: He is not like the, I'm going to build a bunker under my house style, but like the actual like, I, he is a good at surviving.

[SPEAKER_01]: And that's actually been his steam the whole way through, right, every that's occurred to him. [SPEAKER_01]: He's just keeps surviving. [SPEAKER_01]: So he knows something's off here. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, he's about to get tempted the other way, which is hilarious. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[SPEAKER_02]: We get the swing, the other, I mean, this is a typical story telling thing, you push things so far in one direction that the audience goes, oh, that's definitely where things are going to go. [SPEAKER_02]: We don't never swing back to the opposite, and then you swing it back the opposite because that's just fun and like plays with character development and all that grace and playable.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: So Maximus and the previous episode talked about how everyone tries to save the world, but they they they disagree on how. [SPEAKER_02]: He, he, for being kind of no spark guy, he's got some of the smartest perspectives in dialogue on this new watch through that I've noticed.

[SPEAKER_02]: For example, in this scene, he says, this is a cult same as any. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a very short line, but what he realizes here is that every and what it reveals to us, maybe he even doesn't really realize it, but to us as the audience, every group is a cult. [SPEAKER_02]: Every vault is a cult because they're fed misinformation and they believe false things.

[SPEAKER_02]: The Brotherhood is a cult. [SPEAKER_02]: The Enclave is a cult. [SPEAKER_02]: Even the NCR to some regard is a cult. [SPEAKER_02]: Any raider faction is a cult. [SPEAKER_02]: People who work for house are in a cult because they're all run by figureheads who feed people underneath them misinformation whether purposely or unintentionally that cause people to band [SPEAKER_02]: is full of cults.

[SPEAKER_02]: And Maximus somehow gets that. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's genius for being kind of a dumb guy. [SPEAKER_01]: Well that's I mean that's the thing and the whole thing is this is where I think he starts to shift a little bit away from this is where the sex scene we talked about. [SPEAKER_01]: It may be and this is I don't like the writing here so I'm trying to give the writers a little bit of credit on him.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're in this better but I think what they were trying but I believe they're trying to achieve here is by saying [SPEAKER_01]: Maximus has just been fed no or poor information his entire life, right, and is not aware that the people telling it to him were not Actually like you know God like intelligence.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was looking up to the the Right, just like a little kid. [SPEAKER_02]: So as a little kid you think your parents know everything and then you become a teenager and you're like I'm parents know nothing and then you become a adult you go my parents knew a lot, but they didn't know everything [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly, there were still wrong on some of those, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe more than I get the credit for, but yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think this plays to, and I think this is a problem with the English language. [SPEAKER_02]: When we say somebody is dumb or somebody is not smart, there's a difference between being intelligent and being knowledgeable.

[SPEAKER_02]: Right? [SPEAKER_02]: Maximus is highly [SPEAKER_02]: Not knowledgeable. [SPEAKER_02]: He is completely lacking of knowledge or given false knowledge, but it doesn't mean that he's not capable of being intelligent. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that that is a different kind of thing just because you don't have facts and can't remember specific things doesn't mean you can't figure something out or put two and two together and make it equal for right those are those are different things are brains do so that that is an interesting point then we get let's see stay out of all 12 the whole like don't go to level level 12 in vault four.

[SPEAKER_02]: don't go to level 12 because well obviously we all stay away from level 12 and of course that makes us in the audience and also Lucy and Max Musco what's going on in level 12 which by the way I mean I'm going to get you away I'm not going to be holding my bit it's a great reveal but actually was going on in level 12.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is a fantastic like yeah [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I mean that's part of the fun of all four. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, so the overseer has one I first insight into mutations Chris Parnell. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, first of all, I A time you put Chris Parnell and stuff and stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love it more to you. [SPEAKER_01]: No, it's just a little more to see. [SPEAKER_01]: Go see me. [SPEAKER_01]: he is fantastic. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh Leo Dr. Leo Spaceman in 30 rock. [SPEAKER_01]: Chris Parnell has been a reliable source of comedy for me for most of my adult life. [SPEAKER_01]: So anytime he's in something I'm thrilled.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and he because he plays this character I think magnetistically. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah he is the overseer of the vault. [SPEAKER_01]: He's not particularly smart. [SPEAKER_01]: He's not particularly strong. [SPEAKER_01]: Whereas the overseers we had back in Valt 33, Valt 33, Valt 33, we're, you know, because because they all came from Valt 31, we're a very intelligent, very knowledgeable, these were true leaders where you were kind of like, oh, and they know stuff I don't.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now we've got Chris Parnell, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever he's doing. [SPEAKER_02]: Again, a contrast, showing like not all the vault overseers are the same. [SPEAKER_02]: This guy is clearly something different. [SPEAKER_02]: And on top of that, he's a mutant, which, as we learn later, would not be part of Altec, or the on all year.

[SPEAKER_02]: They would not have a mutant running a vault if they were in charge. [SPEAKER_02]: So this vault is not being run by them. [SPEAKER_02]: Also, this gives us insight into mutations other than [SPEAKER_02]: And I think this is important because there's the base assumption is if you're a human being and you get mutated in the wasteland well maybe you turn into a ghoul and in the series so far we've seen ghouls we've seen ghoulification we have some sense of what goes on what's going on with the ghoul and people he knows and all of that stuff but in this scene we go oh mutations don't have to be ghouls [SPEAKER_02]: they can be other things and this makes me think of that is in the trailer showing the little mouth growing on his neck on his between his neck and his shoulder right now he's turning into something now is that like a snallygaster or is that like I mean it's not a plant growing out of his head but it's not a super mutant and it doesn't seem to be a ghoul it's something else

[SPEAKER_02]: So this establishes that that is a possibility at this point in the story before we even get to season two and whatever's happening with that is, which I thought was smart to include this here so that that doesn't feel like it just comes out of left field later. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I try to think that it's fine now you mentioned I spent so much time in the work.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's finally a mention. [SPEAKER_01]: I spend so much time in more hammer that I'm used to add humans that I totally forgot that's actually not a thing and fall out is it like you don't get people who are you get some random mutations. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, you did get there are some people who mutate themselves on purpose that does happen.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and that's what I think may have been going on and vote for. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And may have been something like this. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm coming down with a cold guys and I feel better. [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, guys. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm suffering from this stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: You're here.

[SPEAKER_01]: My voice is it's wrecking your on occasion. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm my energy levels there. [SPEAKER_01]: Maya. [SPEAKER_01]: You're doing the best again. [SPEAKER_01]: Vocal cords and face or not, but my thought process around this was like, I think we get more in the vault for later in the episode.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of the mutations we see involved for aren't necessarily environmental mutations. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I'm getting. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm used to again, I'm used to Warhammer. [SPEAKER_01]: Warhammer, we haven't gone to abhuman. [SPEAKER_01]: So the idea is, in a galaxy wide, [SPEAKER_01]: space with lots of radiation and cloning all this stuff.

[SPEAKER_02]: You get some variations that are pretty interesting for people who need to survive in different ways and so they purposely change themselves or whatever or have over exact generations because it's 40,000 years in the future. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Whereas in fallout and I think we're going to get more of this later in this episode, it's much more of a intentional thing, done to them.

[SPEAKER_02]: Right, whether whether pre-war by experimentation in order to try to make super mutants or post-war in certain faults that we're experimenting in certain things, or by crazy individuals who are, you know, the master or whoever is doing whatever in order to experiment of people. [SPEAKER_02]: or there's the randomness of the wasteland and that's a piece of it, but you're right, most of the time it's something that was probably established somewhere and may not be doing what it was originally doing, but it's still functioning in a way or might still be doing what it's supposed to be doing.

[SPEAKER_02]: So here, we go to the goal, he's remembering the past, he and Barbara in the hot tub and he mentions this line, he thinks about going back to be a real cowboy again, you know, [SPEAKER_02]: That's it. [SPEAKER_02]: This gives us this tiny little insight. [SPEAKER_02]: He came from that life.

[SPEAKER_02]: He wasn't. [SPEAKER_02]: He wasn't a Hollywood rich guy who grew up, who's parents were actors, and so now he's an actor or anything like that. [SPEAKER_02]: He came from nothing. [SPEAKER_02]: He knew [SPEAKER_02]: growing up, what it meant to survive on the farm, to take care of yourself and your livestock or whatever, and also served in the military.

[SPEAKER_02]: It shows that he is even way more capable than we initially thought. [SPEAKER_02]: He's not just a comfy, kind of guy, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, and I think that this scene, this is one of the most important scenes in the show, I think, because this is the one where it does that shift over, where he makes the comment to his wife.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, look, we can go back being there. [SPEAKER_01]: We don't need this, you know, we've got enough money. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And she says, well, no, we need to secure ourselves a space in the vault, right, right, which which really implies that she knows the time is limited.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so then his responses, we have money, we'll just buy one, you don't have to all this stuff, and then she drops and the cinematography here is great. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: She drops the not a good one. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: And he goes, well, what do you mean?

[SPEAKER_01]: And she just gives him that look of, I can't say another word. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is like, the every, I mean, I remember watching that. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm on the couch, my wife's watching, my wife's never played a minute of full-up in her life.

[SPEAKER_01]: And she kind of looks at me. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like losing my mind. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, in my wife like me, I think what I guess you're just what trying to pause it explain Hey, oh actually these people are all horrible think about the vaults even yeah that we've even found out about just in the show if those if you've only seen vault 33 32 and four [SPEAKER_02]: are those of the good ones, they don't seem to be, but they're seems safe, but they don't necessarily seem like it's the good ones.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then we see a lot more after this scene, and we'll get through it a little bit, and we see a lot more of what was really going on in Vault 4. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I see, that's why, that's why I like this. [SPEAKER_01]: episode of luck because he doubles down on me. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to give you a huge reveal.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're going to double triple down on that reveal to make you really understand why this reveal so important. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: And so this scene sets all of that up. [SPEAKER_02]: But it also, it also raises the question. [SPEAKER_02]: We know having seen the scene before and seen trailers that Cooper has said both in the trailers and in season one that his motivation is he's looking for his family.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, but it raises the question, if Barb knew when the bombs would drop, why did Cooper have the daughter at the birthday party? [SPEAKER_02]: Why wasn't the daughter with Barb or why wasn't Cooper and Barb or Cooper and the daughter with Barb getting ready to get in a vault because she knew what was about to happen.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, something happened over that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and there it raises the question and then it also makes me go when Cooper when the ghoul says I'm looking for my family does he mean both of them or does he mean just his daughter? [SPEAKER_02]: does he mean just her we don't really know right so and how did they get lost you know like what is going with the end up in a good vault and he just didn't come in like what is going on with that so and how fast can a horse go and how far away was the vault they're supposed to go to i don't know um right but okay so moving on um [SPEAKER_02]: Cooper is at the bar with Charlie.

[SPEAKER_02]: He confronts him about these communist meetings, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Charlie. [SPEAKER_02]: Charlie's his buddy. [SPEAKER_02]: Charlie says, Vault text the devil. [SPEAKER_02]: Flat out. [SPEAKER_02]: Vault text the devil. [SPEAKER_02]: Cooper is like, well, what do I know? [SPEAKER_02]: I play a cowboy for a living.

[SPEAKER_02]: Which is funny for shadowing because he actually becomes a cowboy again in order to survive in the wasteland. [SPEAKER_02]: Vault tech has interest in making sure conflict doesn't go away. [SPEAKER_02]: This doubles down on the idea that like the [SPEAKER_02]: Then we have this quote, what happens when the cattle ranchers have more power than the sheriff?

[SPEAKER_02]: The whole town burns down. [SPEAKER_02]: They're talking about a film that he was in. [SPEAKER_02]: And this is a warning about the dangers of capitalism or corporatism running a riot and not being constrained by government. [SPEAKER_02]: Which feels, I don't know, we live in a reality where this, you go back and play fall out 20 years ago and you're like, okay, okay, you play it today and you're like, oh no, starting to seem more and more, more and more similarities in the real world.

[SPEAKER_02]: And then there's more cult talk, maybe Cooper's in the cults, the cult of America, that sort of thing, huge similarities here between the cult of America and the cult of the vaults. [SPEAKER_01]: There's also the line with the guys talking about because he's Native American talking about how yeah, and you played an Indian You played a really, you know, they said they let me play an Indian if I do play in the in Cooper's response like a good one Yeah, you know, yeah, you did a good job But it is and then yeah, but you really hear this doubles down on the conversation earlier with the guy who played Mr.

[SPEAKER_01]: Handy talking about oh Yeah, Vault Tech bought the studio [SPEAKER_01]: So when someone's buying it to what you're really getting into here, they're driving home and you get more of it than kind of later episodes is The narrative has been taken over to what you're just saying these these corporations They're not just running a muck.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're in total control right of everything, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And what's happening is we're just following along Because there's nowhere to go for more truth [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's also what I want to remind everyone that there's just no hint that the internet exists in the fallout universe.

[SPEAKER_02]: Well, there's there's there are connected computers at a distance, but we don't have a like a sprawling right internet sort of [SPEAKER_01]: structure the way that we do in here, like today, which makes sense as again, the show is meant to be an evolved version that never got past like I didn't like that mid-1950 style.

[SPEAKER_02]: The miniatureization of technology didn't really happen. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I got that. [SPEAKER_01]: I can have a pit boy on my wrist, right? [SPEAKER_01]: But all the TVs or tube TVs, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Well, the pit boy is a little tube, too. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's it's the it's the very cutting edge of technology.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's why [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but that's what I'm getting is like that. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what makes it kind of the show fun. [SPEAKER_01]: So this whole conversation that sets up some key stuff later is about the corporations are owning everything and they're running everything and it's a really great little homage to [SPEAKER_01]: Because we're driving there how bad can vault tech really be right and that's what Cooper is discovering He's saying well how bad can this organization be he just doesn't like the people that work there Yeah, yeah, he thinks they're just he thinks they're just suits right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's an actor who just doesn't get along with you know the the corporate types and doesn't really you know Want to deal with them, but he's starting to realize there's more going on exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because he just he's he's a cowboy I don't like being around suits. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're enough.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but no these these suits are evil so [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so then we get to the scene with him and Barb, the phone rings and he tells the guy that she doesn't it calls in the evening, which shows that her work life is encroaching on their personal life. [SPEAKER_02]: So that's a pain to him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And then where's Janey? [SPEAKER_02]: She's reading Little House on the Prairie. [SPEAKER_02]: This is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this is, this

[SPEAKER_02]: Cooper is now asking questions about who's in charge of all tech decisions like who makes the rules? [SPEAKER_02]: Who decided that dogs aren't in the vault all of that? [SPEAKER_02]: This tells me that Cooper and this is this is another one of those wonderful, I don't know, two-sided things.

[SPEAKER_02]: Cooper is going to be called a communist. [SPEAKER_02]: They do it in episode one at the birthday party. [SPEAKER_02]: He's a communist. [SPEAKER_02]: He gets labeled as a communist because he is interested in freedom. [SPEAKER_02]: He's not interested in communism. [SPEAKER_02]: The system is so backwards that people who push back against the system get incorrectly labeled communists by the system to shut them up because they are fighting for freedom and their freedom fighters.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and that's where the lines are. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love that contrast of like, he's asking who makes the rules because he is an American. [SPEAKER_02]: He's a cowboy and he wants to be free in that very traditional sense. [SPEAKER_02]: Eventually, we'll be labeled a communist, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: And Bob, Barb here is struggling with fear about Cooper being, like in the past, we get a glimpse a little bit of a glimpse of her life. [SPEAKER_02]: When he went away to war, they were together, and that weighed on her. [SPEAKER_02]: And she uses that as a justification to say that she's willing to give up some freedom in order to have to not worry about certain things.

[SPEAKER_02]: Um, we get this quote. [SPEAKER_02]: If billions of people are going to lose their lives, I will do what I can to make sure the people I love you and Janey aren't among them. [SPEAKER_02]: Again, this doubles down on that feeling of like she knows the inevitable is going to happen. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, this seems to be her motivation or at least this is the motivation she's telling the Cooper.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, um, [SPEAKER_02]: The question I have here is, is Janey not just in, like, because she works for the company, one of the good vaults, but is she an overseer at a vault? [SPEAKER_02]: What, me, Barb? [SPEAKER_02]: Is it Janey? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Barb, Barb, Barb, or Janey? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's a one. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because Jane. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, if they if they're in a cryopod where they get released to run a vault every So often like the people who leave vault 33 and 32 then Jamie could be older and could be managing a vault somewhere as a Vault overseer because of her connections to her mother.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's very evolved. [SPEAKER_01]: It's very follow-up forish, but yeah, recuperate. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, father. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's my expectation is they're going to have to, I mean, I'm sure hedge it back here. [SPEAKER_01]: They're going to have to make a swing on her that bar by their went full evil or full good.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be one of those. [SPEAKER_01]: It's one of those two. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think she's going to be middle ground and it could even split, you know, you can have fun twists with the other daughter being evil and blah, blah, blah, blah. [SPEAKER_01]: But I do think that both of them are obviously going to be around in season two as a kind of, [SPEAKER_01]: What's the word for like a emotional stress on Cooper?

[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to have to discover something. [SPEAKER_01]: Get some sort of discovery about them. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think the twist there would be like, let's say one or both of them are overseers or something. [SPEAKER_02]: But maybe they're stuck. [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they have no good choice, right.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so they're not doing it because they're evil. [SPEAKER_02]: They're doing it because this is my life now. [SPEAKER_02]: I guess this is who I am. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, in that the question to that your statement there of evil is, is Bonnie evil. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the what now she's running vault 33 now right from fault.

[SPEAKER_01]: She means she's very pretty. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, that he's sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: That's our bed. [SPEAKER_01]: She's from prewar right is she's evil. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the people involved 33 or not suffering. [SPEAKER_01]: They're not in danger. [SPEAKER_01]: The next experiment.

[SPEAKER_02]: But they're also not being allowed to become in charge of themselves. [SPEAKER_02]: They're also. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but but that's something when I say evil. [SPEAKER_01]: This is the problem. [SPEAKER_01]: They are not the rulers of class. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, versus some of the other vaults where the overseers were evil.

[SPEAKER_01]: They were actually there to experiment on pressure and these things. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, there's different, yeah, there's different levels of evil. [SPEAKER_02]: There's there's actively being evil and torturing and, you know, actual suffering. [SPEAKER_02]: But then there's like this passive, it's the problem with feudalism, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Like if you're a Lord or a King or something like that, you're not going to give up your station because the rest of existence sucks. [SPEAKER_02]: They're like, you're just not going to do it. [SPEAKER_02]: But by doing that and having that attitude, it's kind of a passive evil because you also aren't sharing your power.

[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so you've got kind of that level to it also. [SPEAKER_02]: This scene ends with Cooper saying, I know you always try to do the right thing. [SPEAKER_02]: That's why I love what I love about you. [SPEAKER_02]: Which will eat, I think, to your point will either be reinforced and will go, no, she's always trying to do the right thing.

[SPEAKER_02]: Or will show us that he was hoodwinked and she was fooling him from the beginning and he'd never really knew who she was. [SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be one or the other, but it's going to set us up for something, right? [SPEAKER_02]: So back to Vault 4, Lucy and the overseer discussing how toilet's work.

[SPEAKER_01]: That was fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: We have the overseer is we find out that he's five generations of a vault dweller. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: So this vault's been functional with which other people for that long. [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, and this is a cool. [SPEAKER_01]: This is what I'm saying.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is where there's a quick reveal here where he's saying that Oh, I'm five generations. [SPEAKER_01]: And so what it's you know, because she's looking at saying no you're mutated You have to be from the outside because they're all through walking there with people. [SPEAKER_01]: They're glowing eyes people They were scales Thanks for no guy.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, thanks. [SPEAKER_01]: No, guys, and what's happening is and I'm just going to jump this shark on us or lower here It's great to do it [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy's perspective is that these people all came from the wasteland, right, we're brought in and they are mutants, but you know, I'm just going Chris Parnell cuts who it is, he's saying no, I'm fifth generation and he would have that that fun like slur for people for people born above, yeah, that was with his terrible joke, right, he's still 100% of all tech, but he's not what she expected.

[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: And so what you then discover is actually all the normal, because this goes into the woman who a birdie, who was a shady, a san survivor. [SPEAKER_01]: She looks like a normal person. [SPEAKER_01]: In fact, all the people in the vault, or the majority of people in the vault, who look normal, actually come from the right side.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right? [SPEAKER_01]: And this is a key part of, you know, vault texts and vaults and all that stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: So, of course, the people inside are like, what, we all look at this, we're all weirdly mutated. [SPEAKER_01]: Why are you like that? [SPEAKER_02]: But reality in the matter is that sometimes the vaults are not as good as it was outside, which is sometimes exactly.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, this is our first realization that, like, not all vaults have really worked the same way, and she gets kicked out, like, he just kicks her right out. [SPEAKER_02]: Then Maximus finds the power armor, we'll kind of move through some of these quick bits. [SPEAKER_02]: He figures out where the fusion core is, birdy finds him, touching the fusion core.

[SPEAKER_02]: This is when she jumps him with the warm shower. [SPEAKER_02]: What is a hot shower? [SPEAKER_02]: He says, it's a hot shower, it's a hot shower. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And then Hal seen is full of these people who are way too happy. [SPEAKER_02]: Like uncomfortably happy. [SPEAKER_02]: Like that doesn't happen once going on.

[SPEAKER_02]: Then we go to his room and you have of course little glimpses of all sorts of things, right? [SPEAKER_02]: The record player, the clean water, but then sugar bombs and young young young devil day eggs and Blamco mac and cheese and all of the things that you find in Fallout games and the song that's playing is Give me the simple life by June Christie, which again, very poignant for the scene.

[SPEAKER_02]: Any thoughts on this one? [SPEAKER_01]: So this was again that whole piece of he wants to leave. [SPEAKER_01]: They want to trap him here and that moment of [SPEAKER_01]: wait I think I want to be trapped here right this is awesome right it is because the truth is this is where we've been discussing the thing about the vaults this is why I was just saying vault 33 yes they're trapped there but they are safe right they have food well now they they lost their water chips that's a problem but they have food generally they have water they have [SPEAKER_01]: Hot water, they shouldn't really have raiders, the stakes happen, but it becomes this idea of it's even beyond safety, it's also comfort.

[SPEAKER_02]: But it plays exactly what barb was talking about is the willingness to give up freedom for safety, which is a constant balance, how much freedom, how much safety. [SPEAKER_02]: If you have too much freedom, people can do whatever they want, you're not safe. [SPEAKER_02]: If you have too much safety, you have no freedom, you can't do what you want.

[SPEAKER_02]: And just like everything in this show, everything is a skew. [SPEAKER_02]: Every ideology, every individual, every perspective on the world is too far in one direction or another. [SPEAKER_02]: That's why everything feels out of balance. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and this is again, another homage to Fallout 3, where you have that piece of like everyone wants out of the vault and everyone else, and that vault had been open before and they re-closed it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they said no, it's terrible out there, don't go out there, it's awful, it's they lied to everybody, but people growing up in Fallout, in, in vault, was it vault 3? [SPEAKER_01]: 1-0-1, in Fallout 3. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to, yeah, those are going to vote 101, they all want to leave.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're losing. [SPEAKER_01]: It's actually way better inside than outside. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: In fact, if you were the wanderer, you don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time.

[SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time.

[SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't give me a free time. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't give me a free time.

[SPEAKER_02]: the remembering shady sands chalkboard shows how this is the scene I was talking about in the last episode where it talks about it shows how developed things they had trolleys they repurposed government buildings we get that old timeline the fall of shady sands 2277 uh and then the bomb which a lot of people got up and arms about they're like okay does the date match the bomb i'm not gonna spend time on that on this episode i've talked about that a little bit in the past yes it's not i [SPEAKER_02]: Mess up timelines or dates and things, and I don't think that's a big issue, but I also think that this can be interpreted in a way where it's not messed up, and whichever direction the show wants to go with it, it really isn't a big deal to me.

[SPEAKER_02]: There. [SPEAKER_02]: Then we have the NCR flag. [SPEAKER_02]: We have the new Vegas music that pops up. [SPEAKER_02]: We have the join the NCR poster. [SPEAKER_02]: Then really this represents this place back to that previous scene where she's talking to Max Mason, she's like, what happened last 200 years?

[SPEAKER_02]: She's starting to fill in the gaps through this classroom. [SPEAKER_02]: And the thing that occurred to me about the scenes that we've been seeing with them in this vault is that not only is Maximus getting what he was looking for, he's getting comfort and safety, she's getting what she was looking for, information about what happened to the world.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, she wants to know the why. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: This is supplying that to both of them, which again is very poetic. [SPEAKER_02]: They're on the same path. [SPEAKER_02]: They have different goals, but they're getting the same like story beats in order, which is really smart.

[SPEAKER_02]: Once you think about laying out a show, then we go back to the Google, the range is taken to the government, which is, of course, this spelled. [SPEAKER_02]: he calls himself the president of the government but he's really just a mob boss and some of the funny things here used to be a bounty hunter uh... best bounty hunter to shoot a man in the ass is one of the new lights about uh... about the goal uh... and during the scene he so says finger back on and it works because he's a good one good school yeah and then this is the he says here maybe you're still looking for her [SPEAKER_02]: The daughter, the wife, don't know, no, he knows more about Cooper than we do, he brings up Moldaver, calls her the flame mother, says that she's dangerous, her picture is on the board.

[SPEAKER_02]: She's one of the wanted people on the board. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, he talks about the super duper mark was under a protection, this is where it's like, okay, well, they're clearly just like the mob under their protection right their mob. [SPEAKER_02]: This is not a government. [SPEAKER_02]: This is a mob system.

[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and then of course, like the goal plays all of them in this scene, right? [SPEAKER_02]: This is basically the line is feed him to the hogs and then he takes the gun and shoots them and they have this conversation about, you know, what's going on in the scene and all that. [SPEAKER_02]: The question here is, why does this guy want moldaver?

[SPEAKER_02]: Why is she on the board? [SPEAKER_02]: And I think the answer to that is, she's on every board. [SPEAKER_02]: She's every bounty system. [SPEAKER_02]: It's not specific to this guy. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And then there's this Cooper says something like, well, I know her, but she looked different, which implies pre-war stuff.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll get to. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so this seems to be this exercise made a junk town in a fallout one a lot where you have this because it's the same thing I'm actually looking it up right now at the guy's name But when you go to junk town you then are able to help out Killian in killing the casino gizmo.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's his name. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah [SPEAKER_01]: This reminds me, it's not quite the same, but it reminds me of Gizmo as a closer one, and then there was another one, or you can be one of the, even more of the bosses in new, in new retail. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, lines up there, pretty well.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the way that these, I mean, they're not even petty kingdoms, they're little, little, little town, little town, run by terrible people who treat everybody horribly, and they're basically our mob bosses, right? [SPEAKER_02]: All right, so then Cooper goes to the funeral to home to meet his friend, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: This is where he meets back with his friend again, and we give this kind of intercutting two scenes back and forth, and then Lucy goes to the vault for ceremony. [SPEAKER_02]: Notice that these are both ceremonies or places that have something to do with the dead. [SPEAKER_02]: So you've got another barrel out here between those two.

[SPEAKER_02]: They are both in those scenes, realizing things they didn't expect. [SPEAKER_02]: and remembering the past or bringing back the past. [SPEAKER_02]: There's past, the dead places of respect for the dead, that kind of stuff, right? [SPEAKER_02]: And of course, you have the scene where everyone takes off the clothes.

[SPEAKER_02]: They remember the flame mother. [SPEAKER_02]: And now we know moldavers connected to this group. [SPEAKER_02]: They're from the surface, shady sands. [SPEAKER_02]: We put the connection together. [SPEAKER_02]: She had something to do with shady sands. [SPEAKER_02]: Then I have this written down.

[SPEAKER_02]: We bring back those taken from us by covering us in their ashes. [SPEAKER_02]: The entire [SPEAKER_02]: And I think this means something. [SPEAKER_02]: The entire world is built on the ashes of the past. [SPEAKER_02]: The whole world burned. [SPEAKER_02]: The whole world is covered in the ashes of the past.

[SPEAKER_02]: So it would make sense to develop a system of worship and memory of the things that you care about by covering yourself in those ashes. [SPEAKER_01]: Ah, okay, I didn't see that, but I liked your home. [SPEAKER_01]: I like that, that's a very good take there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's obvious that they're celebrating, I've viewed it, the one involved for as them celebrating their saving them.

[SPEAKER_01]: They call it a flame mother. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: As you save them from something. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: And they, you know, to the level that they worship her. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, which is considerable. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that is, that is noteworthy. [SPEAKER_02]: But now that we know that she came from the past and she survived into this time period, that would also make her kind of a mythic figure if they know she's been around that long.

[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: Or that. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, of course. [SPEAKER_01]: How? [SPEAKER_02]: Imagine you live in the wasteland, 200 years after the bomb's drop, and you meet somebody who can tell you without any doubt that they were around before the Great War, they clearly know more about the way the world works history, science, medicine, whatever.

[SPEAKER_02]: You would think that person is supernatural in some way, or at least worth respecting with a very strong sense of, like, okay, you clearly are, you know, shoulders above any of us, so maybe you should be the leader, you know. [SPEAKER_02]: So all of that starts to kind of come together, I think.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think when this seems to get more setting up mold diver more than anything else, it's just be so all right, this is now we now know cuz it can't really weren't episode six, so if two episodes left, we now know who the culminating figure is going to be in episode eight or do we. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's it's it's it's good writing is driving you towards okay this person has a deep secret There's something else there the goal knows her Yeah, she's evolved for she's she now becomes this like [SPEAKER_02]: Lynch pin to the story like a better phrase right and the scene where she's meeting with Cooper in the past really shows us that she's anti-valtax.

[SPEAKER_02]: She's anti-government. [SPEAKER_02]: She is she is on the other side of the fence which should make us think well of her because at this point we're very suspicious of Valtax but we also already think she's a terrible person because we saw what she did. [SPEAKER_02]: to Vault 33. [SPEAKER_02]: So, puts us in this weird bind where, like, is she, she's a, she's a good guy now.

[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, how does that make sense? [SPEAKER_02]: Which is a wonderful dilemma to be in as a viewer. [SPEAKER_02]: And then Lucie goes back to Max. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't want to leave. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a song playing. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm tickled pink by Jack Shane Chainedland. [SPEAKER_02]: And yes.

[SPEAKER_02]: It just reinforces the fact that, like, he is super comfy. [SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't want to leave. [SPEAKER_02]: He's in that rose. [SPEAKER_01]: This is the best moment of his life. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: That's the thing. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and so Lucy decides that she's going to prove that something weird is going on.

[SPEAKER_02]: She goes up to Vault 12. [SPEAKER_02]: We have the whole scene with like the gulper body, the pregnant woman, the video, the baby gulper is coming out and eating her, which of course is horrifying. [SPEAKER_02]: The other women in the pods, I don't know why they don't just give them clothing, but I maybe they don't have clothing for women in pod.

[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: the scientists arrives we have seen with a harpoon gun which is fun because harpoon guns are in fallout and then Lucy says your entire culture is insane I'm sure if we came to your home we'd save the same is the response to her which is so true because if the people from back went to 33 they'd be like you guys are weirdos what is going on here [SPEAKER_01]: Well, and that what makes this scene so great is that for those of us who know fall out, if you're watching this, then you realize, oh, fall out, that's like vault four was one of the experimenting vaults.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, obviously this explains all that this is how we explain all the people that the, you know, Chris Prano with the one eye that people with the glowing eyes, people with the scales, all that stuff, oh, they were doing genetic modification. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what fall out for is it's and like one of the more extreme more evil ones of the vaults because there are tears to vaults there's good ones not not many lot of not great ones and then there's some real bad ones yes and vault for was a real bad one [SPEAKER_02]: yeah yeah so and that's where this this episode ends so yeah it's going back through it again it shows me how much care they put into the script and yeah like you said there are some moments that don't play as well there are some moments that make you go okay does that make sense for this character

[SPEAKER_02]: But, by and large, those scenes are in lines of dialogue or whatever are minimal compared to the moments that just feel expertly crafted and put together. [SPEAKER_02]: So, it's building this, I don't know, I already liked the show. [SPEAKER_02]: It's making me like it even more. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, any last thoughts for me before we wrap this one up? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think we're getting to the really good part of the show now. [SPEAKER_01]: Now we're getting into the culmination. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's really break through and show everyone. [SPEAKER_01]: This is what Fallout is about.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is the story that we're going to get into. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're starting to see, maybe even for me as a Fallout fan, I like getting a lot of the vault tech background, which we're about to get a lot more of. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Very true. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, John, thank you for joining me again.

[SPEAKER_02]: I look forward to wrapping up the next two episodes. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, you're doing the future. [SPEAKER_02]: And thank you listeners for tuning in. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll, I'm going to take quick break and then go thank our patrons and do some other stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: So I'll be right back.

[SPEAKER_02]: Don't go anywhere. [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks again to John for joining me on this episode. [SPEAKER_02]: Like this one from Game or Pug, 888, who says, not enough stars in the world for this show. [SPEAKER_02]: The host, Tom Orobot, is so nice and calming. [SPEAKER_02]: I will listen to you on my way to sleep and on my way to school. [SPEAKER_02]: You are my first of three of lore podcasts, and I can't give you enough credit or support to make up for how good this is since here.

[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, Game Report. [SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: And then this one from Lieutenant AlphaFF. [SPEAKER_02]: says robot props Tom Slash robots is the bomb. [SPEAKER_02]: I am only at episode 223, but Tom's Fallout lore deep dives and patron chats are overall provision of a well put together Fallout podcast has killed it.

[SPEAKER_02]: I started a year long basement renovation that took away from Fallout gaming setup and his podcast across his entire network has scratched my missing gamer itch. [SPEAKER_02]: Well thank you so much Alfa. [SPEAKER_02]: I couldn't do this without all of your support so thank you for being here and I will see you on the next episode.
