[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so excited. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so excited. [SPEAKER_01]: We both woke up this morning. [SPEAKER_01]: So giddy. [SPEAKER_01]: Because like, yes, it's happening. [SPEAKER_01]: We're watching. [SPEAKER_01]: We've been talking about this for so long. [SPEAKER_01]: Honestly since we started hot topic and we've of course talked about maize a lot like over the course last four years.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we've been to the podcast. [SPEAKER_00]: We've brought it up, have we talked about it, maybe? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, as I don't really remember, we mentioned it. [SPEAKER_01]: I was in the finale, and we all remember the hair cut. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, we know our Paley Fest last year when they were talking about Mazeel, Rachel Brasson.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was very much like seeing her now and her little show, and like having the memory of it, what a cutie. [SPEAKER_00]: But it has come up a lot, but it's because it's an Amy show. [SPEAKER_00]: And what are we here, but not to talk about the words of Amy Sherman Paladino? [SPEAKER_01]: In one of her most critically acclaimed, arguably her most critically acclaimed.
[SPEAKER_01]: She said it got 22 Emmys. [SPEAKER_01]: 22. [SPEAKER_01]: Slay? [SPEAKER_01]: One, 22 Emmys. [SPEAKER_01]: That does not count all of the Emmy Awards. [SPEAKER_01]: It was nominated for. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so it's like every season. [SPEAKER_00]: Every season, Lomus Rachel Ross and Han had to get her outfit on to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know. [SPEAKER_00]: Be nominated for an award. [SPEAKER_00]: Which was incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: They were so, so cute. [SPEAKER_00]: And I believe some of the season that, what? [SPEAKER_00]: What makes you mad? [SPEAKER_00]: It makes me mad that every season of this probably very good show, I've only seen part of it, which we will talk more about in just a second about a note the terror received last night.
[SPEAKER_00]: But, that Gilmore Girls never received that because, of course, we talk about Gilmore Girls here, of course. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, but Miss Warren Graham, she deserves all the Emmys and I really, really, really do. [SPEAKER_00]: Like talking about this now, I want to have an episode where [SPEAKER_00]: I have that on our list for September.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it should. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to give her a retroactive ME for her work because did you know that they're trying to do that now? [SPEAKER_01]: They're learning to have conversations about giving a retroactive ME a word. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to give the conversation. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to be a part of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the Hollywood Reporter who first released it. [SPEAKER_01]: This was a month or a couple months ago. [SPEAKER_01]: And Gilmore Girls was absolutely on the list of like, yeah, or shows we think would be contenders. [SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of people said that they felt like Gilmore Girls like an Emmy award for like withstanding the test of time for [SPEAKER_01]: not receiving its flowers when it was airing, but like almost getting more popular as it got further and further away from its quinnacle day.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say that Gilmore Girls hits a lot of those expectations. [SPEAKER_01]: So we like definitely to show us we missed the train on. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, we were on the train. [SPEAKER_01]: We were definitely, we were going to show [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, honestly.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember, but we'll talk about it more when we go see the ones I almost season two exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: They just listed them all out. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, kind of a minute season seven for obvious reasons. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, I think that I think that once we get closer to the any awards season, we should definitely do an episode about that on my list of 26 episode brainstorming trajectory.
[SPEAKER_00]: not to like put anyone else down in the show because like Haley Bishop for sure deserved one too but Lauren Graham yeah she should have gone multiple and she should have been out there and heard little outfits and the same we wrote Rachel Brousen Hannon was which is neither here nor there but I agree I agree I think it speaks volumes that the show was featured in the Emmy Awards last year and like with Lauren and Alexis presenting two on the 25th anniversary because it was so popular um but [SPEAKER_01]: I think that this show maize all, giving Amy her flowers for her writing because, like, yes, of course, Lauren Graham deserved the, I mean, but Amy, sure, and Paul, you know, deserved to also be nominated for this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my gosh, she gives her flowers here, which I think is so fitting. [SPEAKER_01]: I've said it before, I will say it again. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think nasal is her best show. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it is her best work in a lot of ways. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that is because she was given a lot more agency in the sense that she was given a lot more resources when they shot nasal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's spoken to the fact that she wasn't necessarily always given that opportunity with the WB. [SPEAKER_01]: I think opportunity was money to it too. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like money. [SPEAKER_01]: What do you say about money? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean money. [SPEAKER_01]: It's money. [SPEAKER_01]: Mazeal, I think, also had a very clear cut category to be nominated in, yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think confused maybe, you know, people who had control over, which category got nominated for Gilmore Girls, I mean, back in the early arts, is that it was dromity. [SPEAKER_01]: It was funny, but it was also a family drama, and no one really knew where to put it. [SPEAKER_01]: This is a company.
[SPEAKER_01]: The pair being nominated in a comedy, they figured their shit out. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, come on. [SPEAKER_01]: You have figured it out. [SPEAKER_01]: No, if Gilmore Girls was as popular as it is now, an airing today, they would know where to put it. [SPEAKER_01]: They would not ignore the public.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But this is a definitive comedy. [SPEAKER_01]: It is a comedy about a comedian. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it, you could not, it feels like a comedy about a comedian. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but that it is a common. [SPEAKER_01]: Amy's really good at writing companies with a lot of heart and cynicism to them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I'm sure. [SPEAKER_00]: But can I tell you, I think it was Mr. Ratfield who said this, that maybe VIEU, maybe I heard the second hand from you from him, telephone, if you will. [SPEAKER_00]: is that these words that she writes for Gilmore Girls and for Measle could be coming out of the mouths of both shows, but the dialogue and the quick wit and the masterful sort of scenes will get into it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, when we start talking about this episode, because there's an excellent example of it. [SPEAKER_00]: feels like it fits best in the world of Mezzo. [SPEAKER_00]: Like the speed of the story. [SPEAKER_00]: I totally talk the jokes that they make the physical comedy that is so subtle in like from dialogue to what they're actually doing is phenomenal.
[SPEAKER_00]: It like makes me believe that I will probably feel the same by the end of this that like my favorite show will always be Go Marbles. [SPEAKER_00]: But that always this is her best work. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm very fascinated to continue on and see if I continue to feel that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: but like there's like three scenes in the pilot that we're going to discuss today that made me feel that way and I was like wow okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I finished this episode because I had my I wanted to watch it the same way that we watched the rewatch club where I'm like enjoying it like just locked in eating a Caesar salad while I watch this and then the next day take notes because I felt like I'm going to tear the show apart if I have to just note it the way that I [SPEAKER_00]: It's a turns out I don't know at all, despite I've seen it a while ago, as you will soon find out.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's just so good, even in the first episode, and I think that anyone who loves Gilmore Girls and loves it for the writing and for the quick wit and the fast dialogue, like I don't know what it is that is keeping you from watching Mazel, but you have to watch it, watch it with us. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually am so unbelievably mad that we are watching it for this podcast that we just started because [SPEAKER_00]: Last night, I finished episode 1 and episode 2 was starting to load and I go, I have to stop, you can't, you have to stop, and I went down to my mom and I said I'm furious, I just watched the first episode and he was like, oh, you didn't like it, I said no I can't watch the next one, no I'm in love with it, I'm in love and I am stuck because not to mention we are recording this ahead of watching the second one, so there's a couple weeks between us doing it for scheduling reasons,
[SPEAKER_00]: And so not only can I not just watch it next week, I have to wait several weeks to watch the second one. [SPEAKER_00]: So all I can do right now is watch the first one. [SPEAKER_00]: And like it's it's it's it's torture because like it's like Bridger 10 right now. [SPEAKER_00]: The first four episodes came out and then the next four episodes are coming out later this week.
[SPEAKER_00]: What have I done to watch the first four episodes like four times? [SPEAKER_00]: And so what do I have to do? [SPEAKER_00]: I can only watch the first episode on repeat for the next couple of weeks. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, here's the thing is that you could, after we record this episode, watch episode two, you just can't watch episode three, because you're going to have to know because I can't do that because what am I going to do?
[SPEAKER_00]: You give a mouse a cookie? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to want the next one. [SPEAKER_00]: You give a mouse a muffin. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you give a mouse a muffin. [SPEAKER_00]: You give a haily on the muscles. [SPEAKER_00]: She's going to want to watch this one. [SPEAKER_00]: She's going to want to watch this one.
[SPEAKER_01]: maize is a muffin, maize is a muffin. [SPEAKER_01]: That's the moral of the story. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I have a fun fact for you about the pilot and the remaining episodes of season mode that I actually didn't know until I did our usual. [SPEAKER_01]: If you were with us on Gilmore revisited, you know that we do like the this is the [SPEAKER_01]: Episode title.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is who was written and directed by this is one. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, aired. [SPEAKER_01]: We kind of give a brief synopsis of what the TV platform that he will without. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's no TV booklet for this, but there is the description on prime video, which is where you can watch this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm excited to take it into that. [SPEAKER_01]: But before we really, really kick off the episode and recap the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: I want to kind of rewind the tape and revisit when you and I first watched this first watch this episode because we have before, you have before, I have before, even though this is your real first time, like, truly watching the show's entirety, you have seen it before, you watched it when it first came out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do you remember hearing about me's all for the first time? [SPEAKER_00]: Because I don't, I remember watching it, but I don't remember like the Amy Sherman Paladin who has a new show vibes. [SPEAKER_00]: I do remember it. [SPEAKER_01]: I remember hearing about it and I remember not really like running to see it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I did. [SPEAKER_00]: You did. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I watched it on March 17th, 2017. [SPEAKER_00]: I watched, that's when I watched because I dropped the whole season all in one day. [SPEAKER_00]: And so what did I do? [SPEAKER_00]: They actually didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't.
[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: Why do I have this memory? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I didn't watch it on March 17th then. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I've given myself a false memory. [SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, I truly thought they dropped the whole season in one day. [SPEAKER_00]: I will say, I did watch it all in one day.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it was March 17th, which I've told a lie now. [SPEAKER_01]: I, yeah, inadvertently, wasn't your fault. [SPEAKER_01]: The first episode aired on March 17th, but I just mean, you weren't trying to be sneaky. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the first episode did aired on March 17th, 2017, but they only aired the pilot.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, this is my fun fact. [SPEAKER_01]: They aired the rest of season one, which is seven more episodes for total of eight on November 29th, 2017 to like almost an exact year Friday with that they gave us a year in the life, which is interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: What's quite fascinating is that [SPEAKER_00]: So that's probably what I did then.
[SPEAKER_00]: I probably watched it when it all came out because that maybe that's my memory of it because I I have learned recently that it came out on March 17th. [SPEAKER_00]: But I did watch it all in one day when it came out. [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's what you've watched it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, in November.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what I find super fascinating is that this happens in September, for me, because when she pulls out her little notebook is a little date, which is actually my brother's birthday, which is quite fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Remind us of the date. [SPEAKER_00]: It's September 19th when she opens [SPEAKER_00]: She just saw Susie and she finds her her name is Susie.
[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, she pulls her notebook out and she sees the date. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's like that's quite fascinating that we're releasing it in March. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know why they did that? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why. [SPEAKER_01]: We haven't recorded this episode yet, but if you're listening to this either in the preview, we're going to be offering on main pod on Gilmour to say, or if you're listening to this on Patreon on Tuesday, we did an episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: about the origin of Mazzle and Amy's journey from Gilmore Girls to Mazzle. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it took thousands to the 50s. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm excited to share a little bit more with you. [SPEAKER_01]: I've done a little bit of research, but not enough to really like super duper mine.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why that was. [SPEAKER_01]: But I will say back in 2015 is around that time when this pilot [SPEAKER_01]: was in talks. [SPEAKER_01]: Amazon was doing this program and I think that they did it up until recently because I remember when I produced my first pilot, this was still the case. [SPEAKER_01]: Prime would do this thing where it would put a pilot up and it would allow the public to kind of decide whether or not they wanted to see the rest of the series and that would then give Amazon some sort of [SPEAKER_01]: barometer for whether or not they should pick up a show.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's the case with me as all based on everything. [SPEAKER_01]: I like all the interviews I've read with Amy. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they did green life as pilot, but I wonder if it had anything to do with that at all. [SPEAKER_01]: So future us, which will be past us when this episode airs, will be as a bad question.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I guess I want past Tara or future Tara, past the coming past Tara. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's all quite confusing in the timeline of this pod. [SPEAKER_00]: I want her to find out if this was filmed all at once. [SPEAKER_00]: Like if this, if they had the episodes ready to go, and like they were waiting, because it seems quite [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I want to know more about the filming, the time gap, that would make a lot of sense in terms of my own personal life that I would remember it coming all out at once.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, that doesn't make any sense. [SPEAKER_00]: It did come out all at once. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess just the pilot didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: And I guess when it all came out at once, that's most of been when I heard about it. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I literally watched it all in one day.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then never revisited it. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, [SPEAKER_00]: That's not true. [SPEAKER_00]: So my experience of this, like I've said, like I lied about it first and then I corrected it via a memory that I don't quite entirely have from now nine years ago, my friends, is I watched that and then season two came out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I imagine the next year, like 2018, I didn't sit down and watch it. [SPEAKER_00]: My mom became very obsessed with me so, and so I saw part of season two, [SPEAKER_00]: And I just have this strange recollection, but I can't remember if it is from marvelous Mrs. Mazeal season two or killing Eve, which are very different shows.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there is a similar setting, and I can't remember which one is which, much like I couldn't remember what was madmen and what was Mazeal. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So there is like a lot of like, I've watched a lot of shows. [SPEAKER_00]: I've been a lot of different people. [SPEAKER_00]: I've had a lot of memories.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've told some lies even here today in the last nine years. [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't have like a strong memory of what happened. [SPEAKER_00]: But there were like enough things that like stuck out to me that they stayed with me. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, in like doing like visual research for the podcast, of course, because we have some artwork for this that we quite love.
[SPEAKER_00]: We did a photo shoot that was [SPEAKER_00]: Spark some memories, especially like Mitch's cold cream and like her whole like getting ready. [SPEAKER_00]: I like that really stuck with me But yeah, I don't I just like I remember like the apartment that I was in like when I lived like 10 bucks south from you and we didn't know each other That's where I watched it.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's really my memory. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I enjoyed it You would think so because I watched it. [SPEAKER_01]: I just got watched in tears. [SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say you watched the entire season. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I can't imagine you didn't [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but if you watched it when it came out in 2017, like let's say you did watch it in November because it sounds like you watched it all in one sitting.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a season two didn't come out until December 5th, 2018, which was when I watched it. [SPEAKER_01]: I watched season one for the first time. [SPEAKER_01]: I had gotten a concussion on, I think, to say, that's exactly 2018. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I smacked my head somewhere pretty woman and they sent me home for a couple days because I truly had a concussion.
[SPEAKER_01]: And famously, you're not supposed to look at screens. [SPEAKER_01]: I decided to ignore that rule. [SPEAKER_01]: I sat in the dark and I watched this. [SPEAKER_01]: What exactly what you should do? [SPEAKER_01]: Sitting in the dark with a bright, like, with a bright, bright screen. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm doing that to have a dark brain, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: But I ended up, because I knew that the second season was coming out, I was like, oh, great. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll just watch, like, and by the time I catch up, the second season will definitely be out. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think similarly to you, because I don't have work, I was in my apartment in 160th.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Just 10 bucks north of you. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I love. [SPEAKER_01]: And Luna, I just got in Luna. [SPEAKER_01]: She was only like two months old. [SPEAKER_01]: Have you been together like this all? [SPEAKER_01]: Those two months, she laid with me the whole time off. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she looked at it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she loved it. [SPEAKER_01]: And that girl, the guy's saying that she loved. [SPEAKER_01]: It's true. [SPEAKER_01]: My gosh, that cat came up and I was like, I look you a friend. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, so I watched it. [SPEAKER_01]: I believe in its entirety. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I think that I made it through the entire first season and then I had to wait like a day or two because I was like, I need it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so like, this is a lot of my life. [SPEAKER_01]: So good. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't remember if my mom had watched it before or or watched it because I had told her you need to watch the show. [SPEAKER_01]: But my mom, [SPEAKER_01]: Similarly to your mom is obsessed with the show. [SPEAKER_01]: She, you know, saw our pictures and saw what we were doing.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she was like, I have to go back and watch it. [SPEAKER_01]: She loves. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, show. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, my mom is so good. [SPEAKER_00]: And she let's cost. [SPEAKER_00]: So does my love. [SPEAKER_00]: She doesn't care about an activism, like she does not, you know, like that's not what she's here for.
[SPEAKER_00]: She wants the blood, she wants the costume, she wants the vibes. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's your mom's. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I also, I too love a period piece, but I love something like this that has the flavor of something modern and that is what they may bring to the table with the show. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really, I'm so excited.
[SPEAKER_01]: I woke up so excited to do this today. [SPEAKER_01]: and it delivered. [SPEAKER_00]: It's so, so, it delivered. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I will say I'm also really excited because I still, I mean, being one of those people who hasn't really seen nasal, I'm very interested to find out why our listeners, like our besties versus like, like, not versus, but like our besties and other gummergirls fans have not stepped into nasal and like what it is that's keeping them from watching it.
[SPEAKER_00]: but I really do hope that whether you're listening to this on Gilmour to say as a sample episode or you are listening to it now on Patreon like I really am excited for anyone who hasn't seen it to watch it with us because this podcast is going to be such a different experience than Gilmour revisited because like that one was a spoiler full podcast [SPEAKER_00]: made for Gilmar fans like Gilmar obsessed really like you're falling asleep till the night and you do not have to watch the episode before we recap it you are there with us you know I don't even have to like pause during the episode to take notes because I know it just happened I know it's about to happen I know what they're about to say like I'm so locked in on Gilmar girls that like it's so easy to do but I'm so excited to discover like new things in the show that I don't know or have you
[SPEAKER_00]: four times at this point. [SPEAKER_00]: I've seen four times all the way through. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I've seen it season one, once all the way through and episode one now three times because I watched it last night and then again this morning for notes and it's just gonna be such a different experience.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you have seen Measel, I think that you will really enjoy listening to this podcast with us, this recap totally. [SPEAKER_00]: It'll be very different than Gilmouray visited because we are going to kind of look for that Amy Sherman Paladino and Dan, [SPEAKER_00]: can't forget Dan, he's an executive producer on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: He is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that Paladinoism, like the way that they talk, the jokes they make the staging and blocking and choreography that kind of happens in a scene, like the shots already feel very familiar to what we know, but also new and like the world that they're in, but like I'm already feeling Gilmore Girls in this first episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to go on that journey [SPEAKER_00]: but also who hasn't seen it because we will be only talking about the episodes that we have seen. [SPEAKER_00]: AKA spoiler free because we're free, which is new for us. [SPEAKER_00]: New for us. [SPEAKER_00]: If I give a spoiler, it is uncompletely unaccident because I don't remember what happened.
[SPEAKER_00]: If Tara gives a spoiler, three strikes and cheese out and it's my podcast. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to say that. [SPEAKER_00]: And no one else. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, the marvelous, this is Haley. [SPEAKER_00]: The marvelous Mrs. Haley, because that's like, that's a thing is like, I know, I know that a spoiler 2 is going to drop from by mouth at some point in this year-long podcast that we're doing here on Patreon.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'll be able to stop myself, but I think that I will have it where I'll have it of time is where I want to tell you something and I'm like, I need you to remember this moment because it's going to come up later. [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to have to flag it in your own mind and be like, do you remember when?
[SPEAKER_00]: because I already have some predictions for things that are going to happen. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited about your predictions, because I kind of want to, especially throughout season 1, given the nobility plus, I really need, I'm going to need predictions from you every episode of season 1.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'll have to do that before I watch them. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that you should, and then as we continue to go, kind of like what I did with Brett, I'm like, okay, what do you think is going to happen? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, where do you think we're going with this? [SPEAKER_01]: And I've never been able to do that with you?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because you know where everything's going with Gilmore Girl, so it's just really fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, immediately though, it made me want to, like of course, measles only gonna take us a year, only take us a year to get through on Patreon. [SPEAKER_00]: And I say only because like Gilmore he visited took...
[SPEAKER_00]: So long three and a half years. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, totally. [SPEAKER_00]: But in the similar way of you loving maize all me only kind of being knowing a little bit a little bit as you will find out. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to do this like in the reverse with you like I show that I really like love with this with Grey's Anatomy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just say it. [SPEAKER_00]: I like to stick to it, but like we can't, because it would take us probably a solid 15 years to get through it. [SPEAKER_00]: We would like our lives would be so different. [SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: But I actually, my actual dream is to do a guy's anatomy podcast with my brother who he is a doctor and he grew up watching Grey's Anatomy with us and he loves it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like in what free time. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, I'm following you around at the hospital. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: And we can talk about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll do all the work. [SPEAKER_00]: You just have to talk. [SPEAKER_00]: You just have to talk.
[SPEAKER_00]: You just have to talk. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, but I want to find something, but that's way in the future, because we haven't even started the actual recap of this first episode, so getting way ahead of myself, but it's just to say I'm very excited to go through this with you and your mind, which is the only place you can be, but just like thinking about the fact that like you'll be hearing things from me and being like, [SPEAKER_00]: That's nonsense.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like she remembers something which yeah, I don't know what caused me last night Because I I didn't know that I wanted to watch it in a relaxed state to start because I wanted to enjoy it Kind of do a rewatch a version of like the rewatch club and go more revisited with me so [SPEAKER_00]: so that I could enjoy it, really get into it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And beforehand, I was like, wait, I'm not going to have any predictions for the season. [SPEAKER_00]: If I watch this tonight, because like, I'm going to know too much. [SPEAKER_00]: I really want to start with like what I think I know about nasal. [SPEAKER_00]: And so me, with my little Caesar salad, with Amazon Prime video, pulled up to watch nasal.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't even read the description or anything. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, okay, let's see what I remember about Miesel and then to keep me honest, I set that note off to Tara and pressed play on Miesel and immediately I was like, oh, I got that wrong. [SPEAKER_01]: I got that wrong. [SPEAKER_01]: It is so, this is so funny, because I wasn't even trying to be funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: This was like a lower, like, Gilmore level stream of consciousness. [SPEAKER_00]: That's all it was. [SPEAKER_01]: That's all it was. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a pan's kind of note that I received. [SPEAKER_01]: I was sitting in the bathtub when she didn't ask for it. [SPEAKER_01]: She didn't ask for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: It was unsolicited. [SPEAKER_01]: I opened it. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, I was just, you know, talking about over, like, makes even better. [SPEAKER_01]: Tackling. [SPEAKER_01]: I could not breathe watching like reading this. [SPEAKER_01]: It was so funny So before we start if you haven't seen the first episode of nasal and you don't want to be like Super spoiled now is the time to press pause watch the episode because it's only gonna make this funnier [SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know, it's, it's, but if you don't know me as a, you won't know it anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's true, knowing this. [SPEAKER_00]: It's really, I guess we can kind of like denote the part of the episode where spoilers will take place for X episode as we continue on. [SPEAKER_00]: So that you will know when to stop if you haven't seen it if you want to come back. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, participate in the recap, but either pause and watch it to understand why this crazy or keep listening and at no point we would be spoiled.
[SPEAKER_00]: in this note that I sent to Tara, what to call it? [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was called before I watched the first episode of Maysall. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: It is 1950's New York, city specifically. [SPEAKER_01]: Mitch Measle is a married housewife slash stayed home mom with two kids, a boy and a girl I think why not.
[SPEAKER_01]: Who does not get ready for bed with her cold cream and curlers until her husband is asleep and the reassembles the look before he wakes up. [SPEAKER_01]: Her husband who I think is Joel or John, but there is a Joel, maybe that is her dad who is played by Tony. [UNKNOWN]: I remember that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that is her father, but he is definitely in it if he doesn't play her father. [SPEAKER_01]: We meet her mom too I don't remember the actress's name, but she's judgmental of midge like any good mother Her husband works in a madman's style office and cheats on her with someone there I think or is that from madman?
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember why he's kind of a loser, but he is loser I think Maybe he's not good at his job. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he gets fired There was like an explanation boy Maybe he gets fired [SPEAKER_01]: and they are going to get them for us but not in the first episode because he is a loser or something along those lines but that happens later in this season but maybe he cheats, loser.
[SPEAKER_01]: One day, Mitch, who's really Ms. Miriam goes to a workout class with the blonde for the 30-something gang. [SPEAKER_01]: Emma, Emma, if much marks really, really, really, really maybe laugh. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think she asks her to go on like a double date with her and her husband to a comedy club, but that doesn't make sense because how does Mitch leave her pyrarchs there if she's on a double date.
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, some plot happens and she gets to the comedy club one night with her pyrarchs with something in it because on another night she goes back for it and asks angry Alex [SPEAKER_01]: You said you meant to say behind the bar, but it's just behind the car, Rosie. [SPEAKER_01]: Bobby, Carla is at Rosie, that feels right, but I don't remember her name.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was so close. [SPEAKER_01]: You were, yeah, you were very, very close. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, then Alex Borstein slash Rosie slash Bobby slash. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not Carla. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's binge get on the stage for a reason. [SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't guess it if a gun was to my head, and they were screaming at me to guess.
[SPEAKER_01]: She talks very loudly into the microphone and says things, not jokes, but they are funny and not jokes, but they could be, but it's just who she is. [SPEAKER_01]: Jane Lynch's Jane Lynch's there really got me. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought she was there. [SPEAKER_01]: Jane Lynch is there in the audience, and she is a famous comedian who dresses up as a character, and then midge leaves after her spontaneous set with her without her pyrarchs.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember it rains and she has to go get some fun from jail, which we learned in the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember end of the first episode. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you were sort of there, I was like, some of bad habits. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of that may be happened, but in a very different way than it occurred.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you notice, there was two things that I, or let's say, four things that I really, really remembered. [SPEAKER_00]: I remember that her husband was a loser, which, yeah, spoiler, he's a loser. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hear you. [SPEAKER_00]: The central park dog, the central park dog club is what we used to call it, because it's like that one area where it's like the like grassy knowle like kind of nearer, yes, she met oh, and I just near that one lapan that's right there exactly exactly right across the basically called the central park dog club.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yes, he was there with his dog and I of course, just like I just was on the phone with my mom and I was like mom it's known as your loop and of course she loves him. [SPEAKER_00]: numbers, whereas that's like you only response to seeing it. [SPEAKER_00]: See, what a man wouldn't have, that, you know that, he's great.
[SPEAKER_00]: That little area, the Central Park dog club is in love story with the JFK Junior in Carolyn Besette. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, they're like playing football there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Is this American love story? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just called love story, but yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right. [SPEAKER_00]: It's excellent. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's Ryan Murphy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so good. [SPEAKER_01]: hilariously, a bunch of my friends at Death Becomes her who also worked on nasal. [SPEAKER_01]: Worked on that chat. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, I have, okay, this can't be a podcast about that because after me, so I did end up watching two episodes of that, which was like, yeah, the last thing I should have done because I'm like, oh, now I'm in the 90s.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is not I know weird, but we were talking about anyway, the last thing that I remember. [SPEAKER_00]: is her pyrex. [SPEAKER_00]: And I just, those four things really stuck in my mind. [SPEAKER_00]: Like that, those were all classic Amy. [SPEAKER_00]: If you were. [SPEAKER_00]: Classic Amy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Close your eyes. [SPEAKER_00]: Cold cream. [SPEAKER_00]: Tony Shalu, pyrex, the marvellous nasal. [SPEAKER_01]: The marvellous missus nasal. [SPEAKER_01]: Good work. [SPEAKER_00]: Great job. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we even need to recap it. [SPEAKER_00]: That's it. [SPEAKER_00]: You know what?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's our show. [SPEAKER_01]: Can I greasy? [SPEAKER_01]: Good night, greasy. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I can't wait to get into it because there are so many gomorphisms even just in this first episode. [SPEAKER_00]: It's so good. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you when you received that, were you like, she did remember something?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's in there somewhere and we need to almost get it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, of course. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely, I think that was wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: Emma, I was so close. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: imaging. [SPEAKER_00]: I just missed the rest of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's imaging like I am OG. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I did know that once I got it and I was like, Oh, but Emma sounds similar does sound like a machine. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Joel his name was Joel. [SPEAKER_00]: I did name was Joel. [SPEAKER_00]: No, you did remember a lot of things.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was raining. [SPEAKER_00]: Jane Lynch is in the show. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just late later. [SPEAKER_00]: She's later. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I realized the thing that I did get mixed up was I thought that we met Jane Lynch's character, who she is. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: We will find out at some point in the future. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought we met her in the first episode in Lini Bruce later. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't realize we like really quickly met Lini Bruce. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought Lini Bruce was like using two character. [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, he shows up in the pilot and you think he's going to be just like a one-off pilot character and you've seen him one.
[SPEAKER_01]: He, I don't remember that. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I genuinely when we saw Luke Kirby at Paley Fest and I was like, oh, it's Lenny Bruce. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like that character. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't I've never met him. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't meet him until like season two because like I [SPEAKER_00]: I've never seen that man before.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't know, I mean, I've seen the Kirby before, but I was like, I've never seen Lynny Bruce before. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like, okay, so I know that he's in the show at some point, but he's not a season one character because I don't know him. [SPEAKER_00]: And then within the first five minutes, we see him as I go.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am. [SPEAKER_00]: I got something wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: Something's wrong here. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I was like, no, it's okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Lenny is one of my favorite characters. [SPEAKER_01]: That Lenny is one of Jean's favorite characters. [SPEAKER_00]: I told her that we saw.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, no, I remember that. [SPEAKER_01]: She was Lenny Bruce. [SPEAKER_01]: She loves it. [SPEAKER_00]: When you were like, no, I saw the guy who played Lenny Burroughs, who was actually real Birdland, and he's not here, but I have some thoughts about Lenny Burroughs as we continue on because we actually, we actually have an episode to recap here.
[SPEAKER_00]: We do, shall we? [SPEAKER_01]: Let's dive in. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I do also want to apologize to both our editor and our listeners that suddenly the landscapers decided to pop up outside of our window. [SPEAKER_00]: So, if in the background you do hear some buzzing, they were just outside.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luckily it was when Tara was telling everyone my beautiful monologue that I left for her via a note. [SPEAKER_00]: So, hopefully you won't hear it, but there is still in the background. [SPEAKER_00]: So, I do apologize for that. [SPEAKER_00]: But shall we have, shall we just [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, so if you now haven't seen season one episode one pilot pause here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Watch the up and then come back. [SPEAKER_00]: And if you have to come back. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome. [SPEAKER_01]: Join us. [SPEAKER_01]: Join us. [SPEAKER_01]: Join us. [SPEAKER_01]: So this is season one episode one pilot written and directed by Amy Sherman Paladino and its original air date was March 17, 2017.
[SPEAKER_01]: The synopsis on Prime reads, in 1958, New York, Mitch Mazzles' life is on track, husband, kids, and elegant, young, couple dinners in their upper westside apartment. [SPEAKER_01]: But when her life takes a surprise turn, she has to quickly decide what else she's good at, and going from housewife to stand up comic as a wild choice to everyone but her.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Marvelous Mrs. Mazzles is written and directed by Amy Sherman Paladino, Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: So I think that this was put next to since this pilot aired months ahead of the rest of the season, because the rest of the season has episodes in Opsies. [SPEAKER_01]: This is more of the, I would call the elevator pitch of the series itself.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what they use for the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like what they did with Gilmore rolls. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's kind of just like setting you up for the show because like yeah, I would say that as we get into the episode and it just not the one who's like who like feels like this is a lasting she would do trying to figure out what she's good at because she does feel quite resistant to it at the end here, but I imagine it's we get further into the season which [SPEAKER_00]: At this point, I don't remember a single thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember Jane Lynch, but I don't remember anything else about this, like none, none at all. [SPEAKER_00]: I do have some vague idea about why I remember something from season two, but I won't, I won't say that here, because it is kind of true as I found out, but I... [SPEAKER_00]: after this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of kind of out. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I wonder if some of the episode titles will jog your memory at all. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe when I read that, and I'm like, what do you think is going to happen in this episode that's titled, blah, blah, blah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they might jog a little something, but we'll see.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, see, because I thought, let's read stories and I didn't know I had met. [SPEAKER_00]: I knew Bruce, and I was like, oh, true. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, well, well, well, well, well, so let's start with the [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely brilliant. [SPEAKER_01]: This is the highlight is brilliant.
[SPEAKER_01]: And in five minutes and 41 seconds, which is how long this opening sequence is, we learned so much about these characters. [SPEAKER_01]: So much. [SPEAKER_01]: Her personality, her humor, her relationship with Joel, her Jewish upbringing, and even her parents, and Amy did this so flawlessly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the thing that feels so Amy about it is like, it's a lot of, I mean, it's a lot of exposition with visuals. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's really what it is. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we're really getting a download on who Mitch was, who Mitch is, and it kind of seems like that's always been the same, which I really love.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I just love how this comes full circle too. [SPEAKER_01]: her set at the end which we can talk about when we get there but like can we just talk about the fact that she's just fucking adorable this girl she's so cute her in the episode that we have on Tuesday but Rachel brought in his casting which Amy did talk about when we saw her at Paley fast [SPEAKER_01]: was a little unconventional for a comedic character.
[SPEAKER_01]: Rachel had never done a comedic role. [SPEAKER_01]: She was a serious actor, and like a dramatic actor, a lot of people at the time would have really known her from House of Cards, and that was where she played someone who was very, you know, House of Cards was a very like serious, though popular, very show.
[SPEAKER_01]: She had also been in the Blacklist, which is where I knew her from. [SPEAKER_01]: and so to see her in this comedic role is astounding because she had never done comedy before and she's so damn good at it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah her her delivery her timing like she there's some people on Gilmore that like when the pallidino dialogue is put in their mouth you're like whoa you were meant to say this there's some characters who like they are great actors but it's not [SPEAKER_00]: You can act in the show, but like this is not, you don't seem like a paladino pal.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like this doesn't fit into your mouth the same way that it does, Lauren Gramps, which is very totally safe. [SPEAKER_00]: But like it's just like, there's no one to get it, but that it fits. [SPEAKER_00]: And like Rachel, like immediately, like from that she really got it. [SPEAKER_00]: Who gives a toaster her own wedding?
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, that's hard. [SPEAKER_00]: So old. [SPEAKER_00]: You. [SPEAKER_01]: I do. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're sold. [SPEAKER_01]: You are sold on her from the minute you see her because like you said she's adorable. [SPEAKER_01]: She's beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: She's cute and she's quirky and funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like little New York accent. [SPEAKER_01]: She has a little Jewish like, you know, cadence in her voice. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so, so good. [SPEAKER_01]: She introduces the marvelous Mrs. Measel in the true it in like her truest form and she doesn't even know what her truest form is yet. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is standing in front of a microphone in the middle of a crowded room.
[SPEAKER_01]: giving a speech which is actually a comedy set. [SPEAKER_01]: I just didn't even know that about herself yet. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's what I was trying to get out and that stream of consciousness is like, she's not even later when she actually goes up to, quote, unquote, do a spontaneous set.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a set. [SPEAKER_00]: She's just talking. [SPEAKER_00]: She's just being, she's just funny. [SPEAKER_00]: Which I think that that's true of a lot of people. [SPEAKER_00]: I think some people like really like, they have to tell a joke. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, they have to get there.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have to lead you there. [SPEAKER_00]: And there's some people who just like when they're talking They are funny and I think that that's really where mid-sits That's why it's so easy for her to like segue into a comedy set Which we haven't seen yet. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember and I mean I'm really excited to see her like an actual set that she does But yeah, this is just so cute.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's got a little bow on her head and she You know brings us back to who she wanted to be growing up that she's always known what she wanted to do and what you wanted to Yes [SPEAKER_01]: She says anyone who knows me knows I plan. [SPEAKER_01]: I think long game. [SPEAKER_01]: At six, I decided Russian literature would be my major at 12 I found my signature haircut.
[SPEAKER_01]: At 13, I announced that I was going to bring Mara University and we get the interjection of her parents who are sitting behind her and I love that introduction to them. [SPEAKER_01]: We don't see her husband. [SPEAKER_01]: We know that she just got married. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's standing there on a wedding dress, but the first people we see are who we come to know as Abe and Rose.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I didn't know it his first name was. [SPEAKER_01]: Papa. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I guess we don't really find out his name. [SPEAKER_01]: We call him Papa. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like Papa's. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what Papa and Rose. [SPEAKER_00]: That's it. [SPEAKER_01]: But his name is Abe Weissman.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's Tony Shalub and Rose Weissman who's played by Oh, my gosh. [SPEAKER_01]: Miran Hinkle both so, so good. [SPEAKER_01]: So care. [SPEAKER_01]: And can he tell you? [SPEAKER_01]: We cast. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that I'm actually quite glad that I watched this show for God about it, and I'm only revisiting it now, because the type of character that Mitch is, where she knew what she wanted to, she knew she wanted to major in Russian literature, which does Amy?
[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, in Paladino, love Russian literature. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, that just seems like Russian themes seem to pop up with her a lot, that she knew what her signature haircut was and where she wanted to go to school. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that that would have given me a lot of anxiety as a young girl, because that was kind of the type of character that I was drawn towards.
[SPEAKER_00]: Someone who really knew what they wanted. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that maybe that's why I gravitate towards the season where worry kind of like falls off a little bit. [SPEAKER_00]: because it would give me a lot of anxiety because I'm like, oh, I have to know these things too. [SPEAKER_00]: I have to decide my signature haircut.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have to decide what I want to do. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, all before I've, like, my frontal lobe has even, like, made it developed. [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, hey, today, you know what I mean? [SPEAKER_00]: And so I feel like that would give me a lot of stress to see that because, like, immediately, I would be inspired and be like, okay, what's my haircut look like?
[SPEAKER_00]: What do I want to study? [SPEAKER_00]: What do I want to focus on? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, what do I want from life? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, and I have to decide it right now and I'm already late because I didn't decide it when I was 14. [SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: And so like now being like a full adult who has like her own life path than everything I can really appreciate a character like Mitch and how we're like characterizing her because previously I would have watched this and then like oh my gosh, I'm already behind so I'm obviously going to her cut like I missed it at 12 Yeah, it's like thank god 12 was not my signature her cuts pretty short.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know gosh [SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say when I was like, yeah, that was my signature haircut. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But you know what I find interesting here is that like knowing Gilmore Girls as well as we do and inevitably comparing some of these characters up to Gilmore Girls characters.
[SPEAKER_01]: The like I decided to I was going to be in what I was going to do when I was X-Mount X years old is so worry for a character that is sold or a lie. [SPEAKER_00]: That's they literally feel like a marriage of each other. [SPEAKER_00]: Like because it feels like the drive and the determination with the quick way and quirkiness of Laura lie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's like, yeah, the the Rory like studio's aspect, if you put that into the quirkiness of Laura lie and made her exact life. [SPEAKER_00]: Like that truly feels like that character. [SPEAKER_01]: totally. [SPEAKER_01]: And what's interesting is that as she's starting to talk about her life and her history and these memories that she's sharing with a crowd, they're obviously like very um watered down romanticized retellings of her life or seeing a pond seeing a flashback that's a little more rooted in reality and comedy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what it's like funny. [SPEAKER_01]: because like what makes it funny to us as an audience rather than the audience that's sitting at her wedding with her is that like we know what actually happened because they are giving us a glimpse into it her retelling of it isn't yes hilarious So I'm going to say the only thing that really got me was in that like comparison of like what we're seeing versus what we're hearing because I imagine what we're hearing from her is what is being told to [SPEAKER_00]: her audience.
[SPEAKER_00]: When we hear her talk about her roommate, Petra, I think her name was, is that she, like, was fat and social, I think was the word. [SPEAKER_00]: I forget the exact thing, but because she knew there was going to be someone who she could eat with and who wouldn't steal her boyfriend. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'll say, is Petra here now?
[SPEAKER_01]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, um, oh, we could hit with a fat joke. [SPEAKER_01]: So I knew it was any me up so yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, like it was like as well through this, I actually have like some thoughts about like the perception of beauty and like where we where we sit with that body image body shaming yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But as we get to that, I was like, is she here today? [SPEAKER_00]: I hope she's not. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I hope she's not. [SPEAKER_00]: But I loved so much. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, my favorite line, I think from the whole episode, maybe not, but like, really suck out to me, is that she went somewhere where the butter was beautiful.
[SPEAKER_00]: And like the way that that sounds and feels coming out of your mouth, I was like, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: Excellent. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that she is like monogram butter packs like yeah, that to her was just so Fascinating yeah, and butter was beautiful You know somewhere the butter is beautiful.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's totally but then she you know we're taken back into the present and She says I would solve the mysteries of the universe and meet brilliant women Kindred spirits who would explore these brave new worlds with me and then you're you're taken to the second flashback [SPEAKER_01]: all of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're here on their head and they're vagina. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's so funny to see them like fanning themselves because it burns so much that Mitch Macell leaves and runs around to the courtyard, but naked trying to get the burning to at least subside a little bit, which is giving Lane Kim.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's where. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's got class and the other one dies. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they'd make a lay-in shake in their hands running around shake and he's actually running around chicken and one was not. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one was a good one wasn't but both very vulnerable.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, both burning in places burning. [SPEAKER_01]: That's [SPEAKER_01]: in places, but it's hilarious. [SPEAKER_01]: Like when she says like I would meet brilliant women, kidsured spirits who would experience these brave new worlds with me, that is brave. [SPEAKER_01]: That is, but they did.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a new world. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we are thrown back in for another present moment where she says something that is very poignant and we get the adjective of R. [SPEAKER_01]: female protagonist. [SPEAKER_01]: She says, but all of these marvelous adventures were simply the preamble to my ultimate destiny.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to meet a man, a perfect man. [SPEAKER_01]: He would be six four blonde. [SPEAKER_01]: His name would be Day Shoulder, Stafford, or Joel. [SPEAKER_01]: Joel Maze. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's the first time that we see Joel. [SPEAKER_01]: So we get the marvelous Mrs. Maze all.
[SPEAKER_01]: in this little, as she says, like preemble to the introduction of the man who would take her from Miriam Weissman to Mrs. Maysall, and she's marvelous, and she's marvelous. [SPEAKER_00]: She's a racial, staffered one. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, that's so lower-ly. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my God, it was so lower-ly.
[SPEAKER_01]: Or take exactly, you're like, hey, but funny. [SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly what it reminded me of. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't write it down as a Gilmoreism, even though I probably could have, but yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I felt like it was very, very laurel-eye. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And we get another buildup of something that's a little more romanticized.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's then rooted in the reality of comedy when she says he took me to galleries, poetry readings, Greek dramas, which is a voice over, like showing us a burlesque club, essentially like a teddy bar. [SPEAKER_01]: And Gilbert Godfrey, it is there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, shocked me. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, Yago, what are you doing here?
[SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing here? [SPEAKER_00]: And I, I like seeing inclusion of like a comedian. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I like that, that that's where we're going with this show. [SPEAKER_00]: It's whole. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And the MC introduces Lenny Bruce at this burlesque club. [SPEAKER_00]: Shocked color shocked.
[SPEAKER_00]: I wrote, like I was like, that was the moment where I was like, oh my gosh, I have to be taking notes right now. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, no, you're not taking notes. [SPEAKER_00]: You'll remember this tomorrow, but I was like, there's Lenny Bruce. [SPEAKER_01]: There he is. [SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: They introduced you to him in the first five minutes, but they didn't at least. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And he's a character that is truly based on a real person. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I know a lot of someone else who's based on a real person or is it just Lenny? [SPEAKER_01]: You know, yes, but I don't think it's in the same way personally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: But not like that. [SPEAKER_01]: really. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is a fictionalized version of Lenny Bruce, but as the series progresses and we see Lenny, you know, as we do, the ax that he does, even this one that he performs here at the Burlesc Club, is real.
[SPEAKER_01]: And when you listen to him, to Luke Kirby doing it against what Lenny Bruce actually did, it's very fascinating. [SPEAKER_01]: He did a lot of research on this character and he does an incredible [SPEAKER_01]: credible job at paying homage to him and mimicking him in a lot of ways while also like building this fictionalized version of him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember him talking about it at Paylee Fest? [SPEAKER_00]: I want to like I want to bring that back around for our besties here to hear him talking about that because like I was like cool like great like I don't I don't I don't know any of this but now like having that context on like oh I gotta go back and watch that because I know [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, famously curbing, his publicists turned this down on their carpet, but we'll getcha, that was kind of a joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll getcha one day. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll getcha one day. [SPEAKER_00]: In a good way. [SPEAKER_00]: In a chatty way. [SPEAKER_00]: In a good way. [SPEAKER_01]: We're not going to, he's absolutely, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_01]: He's absolutely brilliant. [SPEAKER_01]: And he ends up with curbing the actor who plays Lenny Bruce and's up playing the male protagonist in a twall.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, he was clearly really, really like him [SPEAKER_01]: But it is really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I went down this rabbit whole a couple years ago of watching Luke Kirby and then listening to slash watching if the if it had been filmed because of GAN this was in like the 50s when you know who knows if things were always being filmed back then there was a well I was like right on the cusp of when radio was turning into television and so to watch slash listen to Lenny Bruce and understand like the cadence and his voice and how [SPEAKER_01]: Luke got there, replicated that, did that so well, is incredible.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really really good. [SPEAKER_01]: So I love that we're introduced to him and I love that Joel introduces. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he's like the guy wanted you to see. [SPEAKER_00]: And I love that she, I think her name is Mitzi or something. [SPEAKER_00]: She's like, I don't know, he's going to be funnier than Mitzi.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: The girl with the tasks on her boobies. [SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, yeah, because he or Misty, I don't remember. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the guests. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I will also say here, made, of course, having bleached her hair. [SPEAKER_00]: She's like a platinum blonde with a little like short, little acuity cut.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was kind of like, I want Tara to do like a little platinum blonde moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I think you would be so cute with a little like short, platinum blonde cut. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, okay, should we bleacher hair? [SPEAKER_00]: And her who I'll be after the wedding. [SPEAKER_01]: And my who I'm married.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll talk to some folks. [SPEAKER_01]: See if you can arrange that. [SPEAKER_01]: And we could see about that. [SPEAKER_01]: But knowing where we're going, I do love that Joel exposes Mitch to all of this comedic genius. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, the represent, like, what Lenny represents, yes, because of, like, the premise of the show is who she goes on to be as a comedian and so.
[SPEAKER_01]: And also, like, knowing that Lenny exists throughout the remainder of the show in some capacity. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, also within the company she's going to keep, not just in the remainder of this series, but in this episode. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I just think it's very cool that they introduced him in a flashback because of how he's going to come back later in the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I have, I have some thoughts about that, but we'll, we'll wait until until we get there. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually find it quite fascinating the way that this is all coming about. [SPEAKER_00]: And like, I wish I would have like, maybe like reflected on it a little bit more because I just like kind of shot off like I said stream of consciousness.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, I had forgotten that he Joel was the one who is into comedy. [SPEAKER_00]: And when he says to her when they're macking against the tree, doing a lot more against tree than just macking, he said, you know what I want to make you laugh every day of your life. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, that is so interesting because like they just went to this comedy show and he saw the way that she laughed at Lenny Bruce and I was like, was this kind of like where that started for him?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where this is all going like with Joel and what's happening with him and we're going to see him go but like [SPEAKER_00]: It kind of seemed like a lot of him wanting to be a comedian was like, he saw Lenny up there, he saw the way that he made mid-Laf and it's like, is this thing about you want to make your wife laugh because like you love making her happy?
[SPEAKER_00]: Or you saw the way Lenny made your girl laugh and you're like, I want to make people laugh like that. [SPEAKER_00]: And he conflated me too. [SPEAKER_01]: That is a really interesting take that I've never ever considered before. [SPEAKER_00]: because that's what I immediately was like, whoa, that's like a really romantic thing to say, but knowing I got it, I got it watched it first, and knew where Joel was going, because I was like, loser.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, what's the perspective of the loser saying that? [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like being more interested in the guy who made her laugh than the fact that she laughed. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't know he was going there though, it's very sweet. [SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's what I, when I first watched it, I was like, that's quite sweet. [SPEAKER_00]: But on second watch, I'm like, oh, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: It was. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, it's a shame because there are setting Amy, she always does. [SPEAKER_01]: She's setting this up really well for like a couple that is blissfully in love, because then when we cut back to real time, [SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, I've had a really charmed life.
[SPEAKER_01]: I have great parents. [SPEAKER_01]: I love this man and there are shrimp in the egg rolls. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted to get up here and tell you I love this man. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, oh, that's... [SPEAKER_00]: It's like such a fantastic full circle that she planned to get up there because she was so in love and like wanted to And then said something completely outraged at the end and it's just so perfectly tied to Let me get to I know at the end or set what it's true, but and there's everything Everything descends into chaos [SPEAKER_01]: Tony salooning is just an idiotly like I love that rose is absolutely mortified Mary and then she's like yeah, she's joking.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's joking. [SPEAKER_01]: She's chasing the rabbi out and then we see A. [SPEAKER_01]: We see Tony Shulubing like you show me in the Bible. [SPEAKER_01]: We're a sesie kind of It's so good and amidst all of this Joel is just staring at her like she is the most incredible woman he's ever met because I do think that two a certain extent that is true [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I do think she's the most incredible.
[SPEAKER_00]: She is ever meant. [SPEAKER_00]: No, like it's a factual joke. [SPEAKER_00]: But I do think that he is still in that confused state of wanting to make her laugh and wanting to be money-proof, basically. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know where that's headed. [SPEAKER_00]: But like, yeah, I genuinely think on their wedding day.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, when she became, and I love that we start with the wedding. [SPEAKER_00]: The day she becomes, Mrs. Mezel, and like we see, she is marvelous. [SPEAKER_00]: I just love how that ended there with them just like, looking each other and you're like, [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, I'm about to watch the happiest couple in New York City for your slater.
