We’ve heard about Lorelai’s home life, even witnessed a flashback, but did the writers give us a mini Lorelai in the character of Lane to personify her past? [SPEAKER_01]: Hi everybody, welcome back to Gilmour to say with Tara and Haley. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm Tara. [SPEAKER_01]: This is Haley. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Haley. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Tara. [SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started today, I'm dive into this exciting topic that I'm really, really jazzed out in the past some time.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we have two little housekeeping announcements that we just wanted to show you guys. [SPEAKER_01]: The first is a little more serious. [SPEAKER_01]: We just want to select you guys know that if you ever hear a political ad on this podcast, we would really love for you to reach out to us and tell us because that is a not supposed to happen here on our show.

[SPEAKER_01]: We have a very, very detailed contract with our network that says, hey, [SPEAKER_01]: You know political ads and it was brought to our attention recently that some had slipped through and when that happens What that means is the person who put out the political ad Filed it under likely filed it under a different category like health is a list or Education education yeah, and that means that you're gonna try to change [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think so we don't mind having as ads on our podcast so they're trying to And we mean, we specifically mean ads that are not from our voice that our host programmatic ads they're programmed into our ad spots and it's one's that you hear that are not our voice specifically and we very clearly in our contract say no political ads and it is because we have no idea who could be putting political ads out there we have very

[SPEAKER_00]: clear views on how we feel about things, but it doesn't matter if it's someone that we like vehemently disagree with. [SPEAKER_00]: We don't want anyone, we don't know what they represent, we don't know what they've said in the past, we don't know who they are, and we would want to vet that, make sure it aligns clearly with us.

[SPEAKER_00]: So if anyone does hear political ad, someone is distinctly trying to be sneaky, if you will, and sneak it in under a different category, [SPEAKER_01]: No, and it's very important that our network knows when that because they also need to also don't want that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they also very much need to know that.

[SPEAKER_01]: So you telling us we can tell them and then we can somehow get that resolved. [SPEAKER_01]: But we just wanted to say that like very blanket statement that if you ever hear a political programmatic ad on like while you're in the middle of listening to us before during after that's not supposed to be there.

[SPEAKER_00]: And just let us know. [SPEAKER_00]: Especially if it's something that doesn't align with us, but if it's any political act anything Yeah, just let us know give us a heads up. [SPEAKER_01]: You're like, hey, I heard this today. [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to let you guys know It's as simple as that and we deeply we could have some on we too.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now that that's out of the way. [SPEAKER_01]: No, that that's second announcement is actually about the book club So hey, the book club. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, love that to you. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's me me the book club [SPEAKER_00]: Alia the book club. [SPEAKER_00]: Gilmuchery has been two book clubs for quite some time where you read I will follow, which is books that feel more like something Rory did read on the show, what she might be reading now if she had a TBR in 2026 and reading a sexy of course, which is romance that feels Gilmuch inspired.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's quite hard to have two at once. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to lie. [SPEAKER_00]: It's too difficult to have two book clubs every month. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've decided we are going to alternate. [SPEAKER_00]: So in February we had a reading a sexy month with Julian Winters last first kiss.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's sitting right here. [SPEAKER_00]: Just like glance at the name because [SPEAKER_00]: I'm reading his other book right now, but for March, we are going to switch to where you read I will follow and we will be reading the correspondent by Virginia Evans, which Tara, I think you would love this book.

[SPEAKER_00]: The audiobook is excellent, but it's a book in all letters. [SPEAKER_00]: It's an epistolary novel. [SPEAKER_00]: and it's from the perspective of a divorced mother who used to work in law and she does all of her correspondence through letters and emails. [SPEAKER_00]: You see all the people she's writing to because she writes to authors of books that she reads, she has a pen pal who is a teenage boy who she used to work with his father, but she also writes to her best friend who is the wife of [SPEAKER_00]: and so she gets like all of this like information about her ex husband but also all this like all of this drama that's happening with her family but it's told in these like little snippets of like letters left at her door, someone is low key stalking her and leaving her these messages so you get like the whole scope of her life told through these letters and she's also writing these mysterious letters that she doesn't send to anyone and it's just the whole story is told

[SPEAKER_00]: and it's excellent, it's heartbreaking but also heartwarming and very much aligns with Gilmore Girls because it's all about the complexities of being a mother, how like lingering regret, lingering doubts, lingering grief that exists from being a mother, especially a working mother and I just feel like you would love this audiobook.

[SPEAKER_00]: so much because these things that are revealed in these letters are so juicy and sad and just like perfectly encapsulates what it's like to I imagine get older as a woman and I think you would love it I think the book looks gonna love it. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm gonna download this to your to your phone [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sending to her some audiobooks and I'm going to put this on her list because I love it just so good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it sounds really fascinating. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a big best seller. [SPEAKER_00]: All of it made all of the lists. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I definitely think that it would be on for Yomar's bedside table, flipping through it in the evening, making her reflect on her own mother and on her grandmother.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, love it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, can't wait. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's okay to do it in that this month and then we'll flip flop between them so we only have one book going and so I only have one book going. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a lot. [SPEAKER_00]: That's a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: The fact that you have kept two book clubs going for as long as you have when did we start the book clubs three years ago?

[SPEAKER_01]: 20, 23. [SPEAKER_00]: And like I've missed a couple of months with it, but mostly because I like set back and be like, wow, got a lot to do. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we got a lot to do and I feel like it can only improve the book club to like be able to focus on one and I want to balance out the guests too I don't want to just have the reading a sexy author's on and want to make space to have our where you read authors on still really open for I in a garden to come back from last year's where you read fingers crossed so fingers crossed [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so I'm hopeful that it'll just improve the book club, but you can join us on Patreon and get more information at Gilmore to read on Instagram and join us join us join us Yeah, and speaking of joining us on Patreon, we announced the name of our new iteration on Patreon, which of course is our nasal podcast

[SPEAKER_01]: a marvelous time. [SPEAKER_00]: A marvelous time. [SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to show you marvelous time. [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a lot of fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, next week's the cover drop. [SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to like slowly give you the bits and pieces to get you excited because like we're excited and the day we took the photos we just wanted to send them all to you personally to your text.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, that you had. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that doesn't exist with us. [SPEAKER_01]: We just wanted to be like, hi, look at what we did today. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a very fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I did do a little like behind the scenes vlog, so I will post that to our Patreon of us like going to the photo shoot There's a little clip of like red like hey, we're in the taxi and tears like I'm too stressed out It's like okay putting the camera down now [SPEAKER_01]: I was very stressed out because we were running a bit behind, we were behind like yeah it was like we were in Manhattan getting our hair and makeup or mostly our hair done.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we had our makeup on at the time yet. [SPEAKER_01]: We only had hair. [SPEAKER_01]: No, I I'd be did. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we did our makeup in the hotel. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, we did our makeup in the hotel. [SPEAKER_01]: You're so right. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we were on our way on the way and it was there when our time was starting.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it was going to take us like 45 minutes to get to this studio out in Williamsburg, and I was like, I'm stressed. [SPEAKER_00]: You were stressed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I was like, you were stressed in the video. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'll post that this month, but we've been waiting to do it because it shows our costumes.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because of course, we did a little 1950s costume hairstyles from one of Tara's friends who did hair on nasal. [SPEAKER_00]: And so we're so excited for a marvelous time. [SPEAKER_00]: We had a marvelous time recapping everything. [SPEAKER_00]: If you will. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I remember when I pitched that to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, last year, even before you said that, and I was like, so done, that's it. [SPEAKER_01]: Because one of the ones, because we put up a question box of like, what do you think? [SPEAKER_00]: Little guesses from y'all. [SPEAKER_01]: Little guesses. [SPEAKER_01]: And there were some people know and guessed it, but there were some people who guessed one of the other ones that I was gonna, that I kind of pitched loosely to you, because the only thing that was coming to mind was marvelously more to say.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I was saying- Same with that guy. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, we were gonna do that one. [SPEAKER_01]: But when a marvelous time came to me, knowing that it had like a little Taylor Swift reference there, it'll be still like being a little fan girl. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I think this is the, it really is the show.

[SPEAKER_00]: Really right. [SPEAKER_00]: And like, I think that a lot of people also guessed swundervous marvelous. [SPEAKER_01]: This is nasal, which would help you. [SPEAKER_01]: So cute. [SPEAKER_01]: And very like not to get more girls, which I love. [SPEAKER_00]: It also felt wrong, though, to have like an episode title reference that wasn't Amy's on Amy's new show.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So. [SPEAKER_00]: But we like went back and forth on a couple before Tara brought that. [SPEAKER_00]: And we were like, oh, this is her. [SPEAKER_00]: This is it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be a marvelous time. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to have a more marvelous time.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very excited. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, the structure of how this is going to go is we're going to recap every season. [SPEAKER_01]: We're also going to have a debrief on Patreon as we did with our revisited episodes, where we would get through a season of Gilmore Girls, and then do a recap.

[SPEAKER_01]: But this time it'll be on Patreon, and then we'll also have an opportunity for you guys to call in and share your thoughts and we'll do an episode kind of encapsulating the season, and then we'll be back to the next season. [SPEAKER_01]: And I am so excited to go through this with you. [SPEAKER_01]: it's it's just going to be so much fun.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's going to be spoiler free. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's kind of like a strike system every time Tara gives a spoiler. [SPEAKER_00]: It's three strikes you're out and it's my podcast now. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we'll see. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what happens. [SPEAKER_00]: But it is going to be spoiler free.

[SPEAKER_00]: So if you've never watched Measel, you can watch it week two with us because we will watch an app and then talk about it and then that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: This is much as we know because this will be the ninth anniversary of Measel on March 17th. [SPEAKER_00]: And I watched season one that day in 2017 and never went back.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you must have gone back at one point. [SPEAKER_00]: I see you watch, I've watched an episode with my mom. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you watched the early bits of season two because of some of the things you've talked to me about. [SPEAKER_00]: Because some of the things I know, but my mom loves me.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's all my mom loves a period piece. [SPEAKER_00]: She loves a costume, you know, I joke that Emily and Paris is a period piece from some other universe, an alternate universe, but she loves like the costumes and things. [SPEAKER_00]: So she'll rewatch that, she'll just turn it on. [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that I had seen a piece of season two.

[SPEAKER_00]: watching it with her, because I never really set on and watched it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, why do I know this detail? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, did I make this up? [SPEAKER_00]: So there, there is that. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I'm really excited for us to go on this journey together. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it'll, what's going to be the most fun for me is a that you haven't seen it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Be that I have, but I haven't watched it in a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: I haven't watched it since the series finale, which was in 2023. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's been about three years since last time I rewatched it. [SPEAKER_01]: And that makes me really excited to revisit this again. [SPEAKER_01]: I've set it before I love this show so much.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was Amy's best. [SPEAKER_01]: I think she was given a lot of resources that she wasn't given on Gilmour Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: And also, I mean, she won Emmys. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And she went Emmys for this show. [SPEAKER_01]: And while we also believe she deserved Emmys for Gilmour Girls, she didn't really get her flowers.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so to see her get her flowers was a really exciting thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And to have, it was something I watched in real time as well. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just very excited to go on this journey with you. [SPEAKER_01]: But speaking of Gilmour Girls, watching the show through the lens of like being so close to Gilmour Girls as we are and talking about it in the way that you do.

[SPEAKER_01]: I really think we're going to watch this show differently than a lot of other people have in the past. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's why you guys, if you haven't seen it, or even if you have, will enjoy going on the journey with us because it's going to be watching the show of course for enjoyment and for the purposes of like, oh, this was Amy's other baby and like something that was very successful for her and not in and of itself is very important.

[SPEAKER_01]: There are a lot of Gilmore girls characters that make appearances are going to have actors rather than theater true is the show you know theater true. [SPEAKER_00]: But exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Like he said, I'm excited to look at it through the lens of Gilmore girls. [SPEAKER_00]: Simply for the fact that this is where Amy learned how to run a show was on Gilmore girls.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's where she really took the helm as a writer and through these storylines. [SPEAKER_00]: And I imagine that she has this little repertoire of [SPEAKER_00]: jokes and storylines and things that like feel like they fit into her core story. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm really excited to explore in Measle and how that fits.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we have like a we were working on the formatting of the episode itself and we definitely want to have like a little Gilmore count. [SPEAKER_00]: We don't know exactly what it looks like but like actors that show up or jokes that feel similar or storylines that feel like they overlap or ones that feel like they could easily fit into Star's [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but having the Gilmour Girls leg could be very, yeah, very fun.

[SPEAKER_01]: So we're starting that in a little over two weeks. [SPEAKER_01]: Our first on Patreon will be on Patreon. [SPEAKER_01]: There's been some confusion. [SPEAKER_01]: Some people are fearful that we are like ending Gilmour to say that we have no more to say. [SPEAKER_01]: trust. [SPEAKER_01]: We have plenty more to say, but that we're ending our podcast and that we are moving into a new era on pod and that this is the new name of our podcast.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is not is just a new podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: We have going on Patreon. [SPEAKER_01]: We had Gilmore revisited. [SPEAKER_01]: We had the rewatch club. [SPEAKER_01]: And now we have a marvelous time, which. [SPEAKER_01]: We're excited to show you the cover. [SPEAKER_01]: We're excited to also bring you into that world in two weeks.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to be doing a deep dive on like Amy's journey towards nasal after everything with Gilmore girls and we're that propelled her. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I've already started doing some research. [SPEAKER_00]: I see I'm like so nervous to do research. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to know anything about nasal.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't even want to know like kind of where they go. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't like even like a setting. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I I already know too much. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm really glad that you, because I just got this book from Barnes and Noble, she is, she's hefty, she's beautiful though.

[SPEAKER_01]: She's stunning, and it's all the magnificent. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's all the magnificent. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, here with us on YouTube, she's beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: It's called the Magnificent Magical Marvellous Misses Macell, the authorized companion to the making of the iconic series.

[SPEAKER_01]: We and I love it all the rights companion, we do. [SPEAKER_01]: Their interviews with Amy and Dan in here, actually the first person who has the interview with that Ms. Stacey Wilson Hunt. [SPEAKER_01]: who was the moderator who called us out, how called our New York Times article out, at Billy Vasquez.

[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, oh my gosh. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it was really cool to see a familiar face in there. [SPEAKER_01]: And already this is, this was published in 2024. [SPEAKER_01]: So this was a retrospect. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm really glad that you did not get this book. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I'll catch it.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'll catch it in 2007. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: You will catch it once we're done with the series. [SPEAKER_01]: I think you'll really love it because it does take you from top to tail. [SPEAKER_01]: But there are a lot of really wonderful stories in here and the origin story of Mazeal.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very excited to dive in because what I love doing is seeing the articles of Amy and Dan talking about Gilmore Girls and the inception and there are years and years of interviews of them talking about Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: And while the story for the most part stays the same, there are a little bit of people who are too in.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, there's a key stories that everyone who are like entrenched in the Gilmore world really know. [SPEAKER_01]: totally. [SPEAKER_01]: But there are also the pieces of information that come out that you're like, oh, I never knew that before. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm excited to see how the interviews about the inception of Mays all, like all the details that maybe were left out of this book that they talked about in 2017.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really excited to dive into that. [SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like you could if it was like early early articles. [SPEAKER_01]: But as you move past, yeah, I think you would just think that I'm going to look all day. [SPEAKER_00]: and see you after. [SPEAKER_00]: Because this is kind of a companion episode to an episode we did by Amy Wet.

[SPEAKER_00]: Three years ago about kind of that her history because we did stop at a certain point mostly because the episode was getting quite long but we knew we were going to rehearse her at some point and so we're going to dive a little bit more into Amy and how she transitioned from the early 2000s to the 1950s.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think it could be quite fun to me a lot of terror telling me about it. [SPEAKER_00]: It is going to be a lot of great to tell you. [SPEAKER_00]: I heard the joke in the [SPEAKER_01]: the one we're no one talked. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, really, really crossing up. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I'm very excited for you guys to see our cover and to join us on Patreon.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be a lot like Gilmore revisited, but with Maysol and I'm excited to just go on this journey with you. [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be really great. [SPEAKER_01]: Marvelous time. [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be a marvelous time. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So, now that we've got our housekeeping things out of the way, let's dive into today's topic, which I've been very excited to talk about.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, actually, after our last episode with my end hunter and talking about Lane Kim and her relationship with Zach versus her relationship with Dave, one was very brief, one was very lengthy, drawn out some of the names like too long, one was in. [SPEAKER_01]: And the little [SPEAKER_00]: Shallow, shallow, shallow, one was, yeah, brief and so much depth to it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So much potential. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then there was sound. [SPEAKER_01]: But it really ushered us nicely into this new topic, which I can't remember how we, how this like fell into our laps. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you said something, I said something, a bestie said something, something happened, or someone brought it came from us.

[SPEAKER_00]: It is. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's the thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I remember so clearly us having this conversation and I can't remember if it was you or if it was me and like part of me felt like it was me because of like I remember your reaction to it and I remember it was surrounding us talking about the season five finale when there's that juxtaposition of worried dropping out of Yale in Laurela not being able to do anything about it and laying kind of like dropping her own passion and Mrs. Kim stepping in and [SPEAKER_00]: Seizing Lane before she can drop out of band, you know what I mean?

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like she takes her circumstances and fixes it for her or helps her see a way out of it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't remember where it was though because I was convinced it was on Gilmourri visited. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I listened to so many episodes of Gilmourri visited last night.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was wondering you were talking about Gilmourri revisited and like how sick you sounded last year and I was like why are she going to listen to me? [SPEAKER_00]: Why do I know this? [SPEAKER_01]: All right, how does she know that? [SPEAKER_00]: Because I went back and watch, I listened to Season 5 episode 22 to see if we talked about it there.

[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: I went back to the perfect dress, we're laying in her mom have that moment. [SPEAKER_00]: I went back to Lane's Wedding because we talk about kind of like that's the moment when we really feel like Lane and her mom are really on the path to being better together.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I literally listen to probably like seven different episodes last night trying to find the moment because I know it centered around that finale, but I don't remember. [SPEAKER_00]: And I maybe it was on pod, maybe it wasn't a Gilmore to consider. [SPEAKER_00]: It existed between us.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if it [SPEAKER_00]: anyone knows where. [SPEAKER_00]: You let us know your message goes to the top of the end box because I always did so much time listening to our own podcast last night. [SPEAKER_00]: It was quite fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually really enjoyed Gimmory visited as it turns out if you guys haven't listened.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite fun coming from one of the girls who talked on it, listening to it herself. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it was like super bummed because I was trying to find it. [SPEAKER_00]: but it also brought up a lot of interesting questions that I'm going to ask you later. [SPEAKER_00]: But I know that it came between us, but I don't know what it was because the idea that was presented was that Lane feels like the depiction of Laura Liesh childhood that everything we hear about her is we're watching it happen to Lane.

[SPEAKER_00]: were like seeing what her childhood was most likely like, even if it's like lower-rise aversion. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I don't think that her childhood ever reached the extremist version that exists for Lane. [SPEAKER_00]: But I think that's what it felt like to lower-lie. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think we have lower-rise aversion of her childhood with Mrs. Kim and Lane.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the difference is that when we get to season five episode 22, Laura likes her mom for help. [SPEAKER_00]: She says yes, and it all falls through and she betrays her. [SPEAKER_00]: Mrs. Kim sees Lane floundering in her own passion and reaches out to her and won't let her. [SPEAKER_00]: Quit, quit, won't let her move away from him.

[SPEAKER_00]: So don't give up. [SPEAKER_00]: Kim's don't give up. [SPEAKER_00]: Which that episode made me crack up because that was when you said, [SPEAKER_00]: He famous a clip or maybe he didn't we don't know where he is but it was so funny We laugh for like honestly a solid five minutes about that [SPEAKER_00]: that the fact that that's a turning point where it becomes less of a depiction of what Laura Lies childhood was like and moving from that point, it's what Laura Lies adult life kind of could have been like if her mom really decided to make, like, made the decision, but she wasn't going to understand her but she was gonna let her be who she was and I think that that's kind of where where it flips from being like kind of a representation of her to like a what if.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and in that moment. [SPEAKER_01]: and I can't find where we talked about it. [SPEAKER_01]: I know, and it was one of those moments where like, every time we have a thought about like, oh, that would be a great episode. [SPEAKER_01]: I write it down. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was so buried in like the episode brainstorming list that I truly can't place where and when I put it there.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But regardless, I just thought it was a really interesting topic because I haven't stopped thinking about it since it was like first brought to us every time we look at Laine and Laura like mentioned something about her childhood. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, wow, you know, we've we've talked in the past about Laine having kind of a surrogate mother in Laura lie and that the reason Laura like does that is because she sees so much of herself in Laine.

[SPEAKER_01]: But today we're going to [SPEAKER_01]: the tenancies of her upbringing and how that's reflected in things that Laura says, things that Emily says, because it's really hard not to compare Emily and Mrs. Kim in this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you have to, you know, question that's been posed, which is, you know, where we're trying to explore time throughout the series when the [SPEAKER_01]: I put a poll up on Instagram, of course, we love to hear you guys think.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so the poll that I put up for our listeners was did Laura and Lane have similar upbrings. [SPEAKER_01]: And I kept it broad for a reason because I knew that this was going to be a little divisive because we're coming at it from the stance of Laura and Lane both being in very suppressed environments where they felt like they couldn't be their true selves.

[SPEAKER_01]: And that's general. [SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't like really [SPEAKER_01]: pull at the nitty-gritty of who their parents were, and all of these, so my clients, the existing around that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, correct, which we'll talk about in a moment. [SPEAKER_01]: So I kept it very, very general.

[SPEAKER_01]: And the results were 769 people, 18% said big time. [SPEAKER_01]: 11%, 479 people said, not at all, no, they did not have similar upbringing. [SPEAKER_01]: 70% which was almost 3,000 people, said some similarities, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: And so most people wrote the fence on this one because I feel like you can't, you can't deny that they had similar upbringings in a sense.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that people were very hesitant to say that they had the same upbring, that this is a true like one for one mirrored representation. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of all I think it is, versus lanes. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so either. [SPEAKER_01]: But of course, we followed it up with [SPEAKER_01]: question boxes.

[SPEAKER_01]: So I said, if yes, tell us why and if no, tell us why. [SPEAKER_01]: And so if yes, just kind of give you a breakdown of what people said because of course this was already running through my mind. [SPEAKER_01]: But the nose, I wrote a lot of them down because I liked the different variations of what people gave because a lot of them were similar.

[SPEAKER_01]: But for yes, it was tradition and social stature above all else is a path that both Laura and Lane ran from. [SPEAKER_01]: both grew up in a matriarchal dominant household in which their mothers suppressed their individual personalities in an effort to raise versions of themselves. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that answer.

[SPEAKER_01]: It was very eloquently put. [SPEAKER_01]: And I also kind of forgot that in these different scenarios, the variables are a little bit different because they were raised in very matriarchal, heavy households because their relationships with their mothers take precedence in the story over their fathers for [SPEAKER_01]: where I see and for more a lie it's just different her relationship with her dad is always second fiddle and then finally they had different upbringings but similar traumas both felt trapped in their own homes.

[SPEAKER_01]: So those are the three answers that I felt encapsulated a lot of other answers because we had a lot of answers for this but we had even more for the nose and I'm gonna give you the funny ones first because okay really really take a fan. [SPEAKER_01]: This is Kim was a bit more insane than [SPEAKER_00]: a bit more insane than Emily, which is why I feel like it's a like we're seeing lower-rise childhood or like upbringing played out as lower-life felt and saw it to be.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's why Mrs. Kim is so extreme is because like if we're watching this we're supposed to feel like this is what it was like for lower-lie, even though I don't think that's true because Emily was never as strict as Mrs. Kim or like, [SPEAKER_00]: She never locked her up in the house for weeks on end in the way that Mrs. Kim does.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like Lane's reality is like, quote unquote, lower-rise version of what she thought it was to grow up with you. [SPEAKER_01]: The next one was, Laura, like, how to father on screen? [SPEAKER_01]: No! [SPEAKER_01]: Like, okay, or that is fair, so fair. [SPEAKER_01]: And the last one that really made me laugh was Laura Lite didn't have a man getting in the way of her dreams like lanes, dots.

[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, ah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, whoa, whoa. [SPEAKER_00]: So, the thing is that too is like, what is Laura Lite's dream? [SPEAKER_01]: I think that that's a very interesting question to pose in regards to like her and lane kind of having mirroring. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, bringings. [SPEAKER_01]: I have thought because yeah, I've thought that I kind of want to touch on that a little later because I think it's an important question to pose.

[SPEAKER_01]: But before we get there, the rest of the nose, the I wrote a lot down because I thought you guys really spelled a lot of these things out very eloquently and these are things that I kind of want to run down through our conversation. [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I want to touch on all of these throughout our conversation with the examples we've given, but Lane respected her mom more, even if she didn't agree with her.

[SPEAKER_01]: We know nothing about Lane's relationship with her father. [SPEAKER_01]: Laura, I had more space and didn't have to hide who she was. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane's mom was strict in the name of religion. [SPEAKER_01]: Laura, my parents were strict in the name of family status and reputation. [SPEAKER_01]: Laura, I was always more strong and independent while Lane had to be kicked out of her house to take responsibility for her life choices.

[SPEAKER_01]: Lane rebelled secretly, Laura Lye rebelled, loudly, Mrs. Kim held Lane back and kept her in a box. [SPEAKER_01]: The Gilmour is just tried to boost Laura Lye up in the world. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane got to flesh out who she was in secret. [SPEAKER_01]: Laura Lye got pregnant before she had a chance to do that.

[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm, hi. [SPEAKER_01]: In regards to the dream thing, what I'll talk about. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane had to hide her whole life, while Laura Lye was merely criticized and controlled because of it. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane's story is about culture and autonomy, where his lore lies was very much about classism, and lore lies was left alone a lot, where his lane was never left alone.

[SPEAKER_00]: Right, all very valid points. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if she was left alone, it was like with a expectation that she was like reflecting on what she heard at church or like how she introduces to Kian in season five about how like Mrs. Kim doesn't know if you've turned the TV on and so like, [SPEAKER_00]: She's left alone at the house with the expectation that nothing will happen while she's gone.

[SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: But again, we've learned in the flashback in Dear Emily Richard that she is left alone. [SPEAKER_00]: They go on vacation without her quite a bit. [SPEAKER_00]: But I think a lot of these, they core difference is like what the origin of why they are so suppressed.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the key difference. [SPEAKER_00]: But I think that the intention and the goal for both Mrs. Cam and Emily for Lane [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think the Emily necessarily wanted to create a version of herself like a little Emily. [SPEAKER_00]: I think more so she wanted to create someone that she could parade around society and have like a very like on paper, very good life.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know necessarily think that she had a strong care in the world about whether or not lower life felt okay with it, which we see like when she goes to Christopher. [SPEAKER_00]: She's never thought much of him but he comes from good breeding. [SPEAKER_00]: So like on paper her marrying a hate and looks good.

[SPEAKER_00]: and it was all good about what looks good, what sounds good, what's going to be impressive for her future. [SPEAKER_00]: Versus Mrs. Kim of course came from like religious and like the pressures that come along with like a Korean culture, totally. [SPEAKER_00]: That there's like a difference of like the reason behind them, but ultimately the result is the same.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and if I may, I don't completely disagree with the sentiment of like, well, both of them came from different backgrounds. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is from a religious and a cultural standpoint, versus a classism and, you know, societal status standpoint. [SPEAKER_01]: However, all of those at their core are societal constructs.

[SPEAKER_01]: And while I think that as a whole, and I could even see it in the comments in the answers of people were giving on the no side of like, well, you know, Mrs. Kims came from a religious standpoint of cultural standpoint, and Emily's came from XYZ and that feels a little more shallow. [SPEAKER_01]: Emily's in Richard's values, feel more shallow.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but at the core, those do represent the values that they were raised on and that you could say the same about Mrs. Kim, you are raised on a specific set of values, whether that is from your culture, your religion, just like where you grow up and I do think that Emily and Richard, whether we agree with it or we don't, those are the values they were raised on.

[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to call it a religion, but it's kind of similar in the sense that like values are values. [SPEAKER_00]: But you know what I mean, is that like, that's what we learn about Mrs. Kim, is that she kept from her mother, what, like, how she was actually leading her life. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and so that's so fascinating when you get there is like, where did this actually come from for her to like want to lead her life like this, want to be as strict with her daughter as she was because she, [SPEAKER_00]: kind of seemed like to approach it from like a fear of the world in various aspects as it related to Lane.

[SPEAKER_00]: She didn't want her to meet the wrong people. [SPEAKER_00]: She didn't want her to be like I forget the exact way that Mrs. Kim phrases it but like there's just like a there's a wrong type of man that could come across Lane and she's too innocent for that but she wanted her to be with a [SPEAKER_00]: like their family arranged with her, but I think like the difference between Lane and Laura Lye is that like we find that like Dave exists outside of that kind of idea but he's like very respectful and he is a Christian and he does follow their religion and there is like an arrow that like she likes Dave.

[SPEAKER_00]: Mrs. Kim like appreciates this person. [SPEAKER_00]: She says they can't get married but like I don't know I think she could have been one over by the time they actually were [SPEAKER_00]: She would have been fine with you. [SPEAKER_00]: When she says, I will not get in your way. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, he is like, get fully in the way.

[SPEAKER_01]: What if you did? [SPEAKER_00]: What if you bought it and went into the ground? [SPEAKER_00]: What if you brought him a Mrs. Kim Candy Graham again? [SPEAKER_00]: And you opened the street about hellfire? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just saying. [SPEAKER_01]: Just just mulling.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But I don't think that Emily would have done that for the rely. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think she gets unbored for Luke. [SPEAKER_00]: She does. [SPEAKER_00]: Simply because they're like, well, what are we going to do? [SPEAKER_00]: We've fought this enough. [SPEAKER_00]: How many times can we actually fight this?

[SPEAKER_01]: I think Mrs. Kim reaches that place though as well. [SPEAKER_01]: I think when it comes to the partner that Lane's going to choose, I think at the very beginning, Mrs. Kim especially because she's so young. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane is only 16 years old. [SPEAKER_01]: She has a lot of say. [SPEAKER_01]: She's setting her up on dates.

[SPEAKER_01]: She's making her go to the hay ride. [SPEAKER_01]: She's making her go out with food. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you said the Korean doc, he's going to be a doctor. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, Mrs. Kim is a very specific idea of who she wants her daughter to end up with. [SPEAKER_01]: And whether that comes from, you know, Korean culture, religious background, whatever that may be, those are her standards.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's that she believes that Lane should end up with someone who is a Korean doctor. [SPEAKER_01]: And Emily, one of the same, had the same ideal in her mind. [SPEAKER_01]: Regardless of maybe occupation, actually, I do think occupation played into it. [SPEAKER_01]: But clearly, it was like, [SPEAKER_00]: What was his occupation?

[SPEAKER_00]: It was like it superseded that he came from good breeding. [SPEAKER_00]: Whatever he did for guard class, he came from good breeding. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a good name. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I do think that the main difference is like the origin of the reason why they were treated this way as children, the result is the same.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like they want something for them that they do not want for themselves. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, don't care. [SPEAKER_01]: I think the comes from the societal pressure expectations, whether that be from religion, culture, or classism. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it is all of those things do stem from something that's happening.

[SPEAKER_00]: The same external from their parents. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: There's like a version that exists in the nebulous space. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's less about what their kids want. [SPEAKER_00]: Or what? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, I guess wanting the best for their kids, because this is what they know.

[SPEAKER_00]: what they think is the best for their kids. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't really agree that Lane respects her mom a lot more because even when they like exist in like the space apart, she is way more respectful of her mom. [SPEAKER_00]: I think even the way that she talks about her mom to Rory is rather respectful.

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, she does begrudge her decisions, but I don't everything that she's too harsh about Mrs. Kim in the way that [SPEAKER_00]: to end on and everyone to the point that it ended up in a magazine publication. [SPEAKER_01]: I agree with you on that. [SPEAKER_01]: As soon as I started to see, because there were a lot of responses that said that, there were like laying at the end of the day still respects her mom even if she doesn't agree with her, I don't think that Laura lives respects her mom the same way.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it's interesting because Laura like actually verbally says that she says as much to Mrs. Kim in the double date episode in season one. [SPEAKER_01]: She says I've never met a kid who respects her parents as [SPEAKER_01]: And that is because I don't think Laura, for all the ways in which she can identify with Lane and connect with her, I don't think that she can connect with her on that level.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, yeah, I don't think she disrespects her parents in the sense that's not the right word. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that she has like a total lack of respect for her parents. [SPEAKER_01]: I think she understands like this is the way they were raised. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is what they thought was best for me and it wasn't what I wanted.

[SPEAKER_01]: And like, that's just what it is. [SPEAKER_01]: but she doesn't respect them the same way that Lane respects her. [SPEAKER_00]: No, they have like a similar disdain, but like I think that Laurel is way way way more vocal about it. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know that I, that there is a disdain there for Lane.

[SPEAKER_01]: I will in the same way. [SPEAKER_00]: I will disdain for the way her, for her approach. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she's not like being the double dressing, the having to like sneak food at the lower lighthouse house. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that she wants to live her life the way that she wants to.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that is where it comes from just that she's under that much pressure, but she always acquiesce to it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like she lives her little secret life, but like the and in the greater picture, she does also live the life that Mrs. Kim wants her to. [SPEAKER_00]: She looks at her double life.

[SPEAKER_00]: She really does. [SPEAKER_00]: She really is a handsome guy. [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people bringing up that. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: She really is a good guy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's his month. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think it's like March 20th. [SPEAKER_00]: There's something like that.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Hannah Montana, 20 year-old reunion. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, amazing, amazing. [SPEAKER_00]: What a perfect month to do a Lane Kim app. [SPEAKER_01]: I know, because you get the best of both worlds, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, one of the things I wrote down here is that I don't think that we ever get Mrs. Kim's hopes and dreams for Lane laid out the way we do for Emily and Richard, like Emily, always talking about like what they thought of Lane.

[SPEAKER_01]: Bride is in her class. [SPEAKER_01]: I had to tell them that she's not a private lie. [SPEAKER_01]: For Laura, I did I say, yeah, you'd say. [SPEAKER_01]: If Emily and Richard are hopes and dreams for Lane, I'm sure we would have heard about it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think they have hopes and dreams for Lane.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But like all of them across the board basically align with you get married, you have children, you live the life that I want for you is kind of the sentiment across the board. [SPEAKER_00]: For both of them, yeah, for both of them. [SPEAKER_00]: And for Lane, it's like a Korean doctor who Lane goes to 7th day Adventist Church and never talks to a boy ever.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's true. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they necessarily wanted that for a lower life, but they did want her to go to school. [SPEAKER_00]: Brightest in her class, like you said, that they wanted, I don't know what they wanted her to do with the degree, but they wanted her to be a wife.

[SPEAKER_00]: To a husband from good reading because she was gal more. [SPEAKER_00]: Ultimately, I feel like the differences come back around to the same goal. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that the difference is, or like the similarities and differences, exist more cleanly between Lane and Boralai than they necessarily do their upbringing, like their reaction to it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because something, a question I had for you that I was like pondering, as I was really listening to Gilmouray visited last night is, do you think that Lane wanted to fit in with the world that she? [SPEAKER_00]: like do you think that she was like respectful of her mom because she both wanted to fit into her mom's expectations and like be.

[SPEAKER_00]: I guess love does the wrong way but like be appreciated in that's respective like the effort that she put forth for her mom but also like fit in at school like she was in the marching band and she'd be a mature leader. [SPEAKER_00]: And as much as she loves music and like, that's a place where she's just staying full towards other people, stays in music.

[SPEAKER_00]: But like, she dresses differently. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, she doesn't wear the clothes that Mrs. Kim, like, approves of her. [SPEAKER_00]: She wears what she wants to wear. [SPEAKER_00]: But like, do you think to a degree she just wants to fit in everywhere in her life? [SPEAKER_00]: And that's where a lot of the tension comes from for her.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it's a great question. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think I have like a fully flush out answer. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think we get from lane. [SPEAKER_01]: two her mom and season four when it all comes to the surface and Mrs. Kim finds all the stuff under the floor board. [SPEAKER_01]: She says I just want to please you so badly.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you know, she does say to her in that moment, I started this when I was six for you to know that like at six years old that you just don't align with what your mom teaches you is really a big deal. [SPEAKER_01]: Like that tells me that to your core you knew that like this just wasn't the life [SPEAKER_01]: for you.

[SPEAKER_01]: I do think she does these things because she wants to please her mom and Satis by her mom, but she does want to have the best of both worlds. [SPEAKER_01]: She presents that in that episode. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: It's easy for her mom. [SPEAKER_01]: So much so that she's like, I want to please you so badly.

[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I can't but can we come to a compromise here so that like I can still be your daughter and I'll go to the seventh that day Adventist school. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't care. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll do it. [SPEAKER_01]: But I really just want to play in my rock band. [SPEAKER_01]: Like that's all I want.

[SPEAKER_01]: And Mrs. Kim can't acquiesce to that. [SPEAKER_01]: And so [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I think that especially when we meet Lane, she's just dying to fit in anywhere that we'll accept her because she feels so Just adverse to being a part of this life that her mother wants for her and I can't put my finger on if it's the same as Laura Lye where she's her mom wants it for her So bad that she doesn't want it for herself because I do think that's Laura Lye It's like her parents want her to be a part of the wealthy rich societal Bringing that she had so badly that she was like rebels against it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she does not she resent them. [SPEAKER_00]: No, yeah [SPEAKER_00]: That for me is kind of like the core of that question is like, yeah, when it came to Lorelai, it was like, Lorelai did not want to fit in. [SPEAKER_00]: And like, I think that she was that I'm thinking about in season seven when in Lorelai's first katillion, which like, please, it was not her first katillion, you guys.

[SPEAKER_00]: But when she sees that little girl who like just seems so different than everyone else, that's who she identified herself is, is like she just didn't care to fit in. [SPEAKER_00]: Like she was not going to and she's going to be very loud about it. [SPEAKER_00]: Where's Lane, I feel like Lane wants to.

[SPEAKER_00]: She's a people pleaser. [SPEAKER_00]: She wants to have 100% wear. [SPEAKER_00]: But I don't think she loved for that. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's because from a very young age, she knew that she was different. [SPEAKER_01]: She wanted to do things differently than her mom wanted her to do them.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think she tries, but ultimately, [SPEAKER_01]: Can't she tries to do it in as many ways as she can but she's looking to fit in in other capacities because she doesn't know who she is yet and most people don't when they're 16 But it takes her a little ways before she finds out like oh, I want to be a drummer I want to be a drummer in a band and and like she got there on her completely on her own It's as she saw music shop.

[SPEAKER_01]: She loved that that possibility was open to her [SPEAKER_01]: She starts like looking around at the instrument she could try and she lands on the drums. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's the latterly, the loudest of them. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's the first time she really truly feels like she's found herself.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she tried being a cheerleader. [SPEAKER_01]: She knew she's in the marching band. [SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't have the marching band. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she was like so close. [SPEAKER_01]: And then try to be a cheerleader and then finally finds her calling in being a part of a rock band after having this like encyclopedic knowledge of music and being so immersed in in that world that I feel like she for a long time tried to figure out where what fitting and meant because she didn't feel like she fit into [SPEAKER_01]: She was like, this is not the right thing for me, and this just doesn't fit.

[SPEAKER_01]: So I know that's like a really long way did all over the place. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a question. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't that kind of fits perfectly into my next idea. [SPEAKER_00]: And that is their passions. [SPEAKER_00]: That they both, I think they both leave home with their passion.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that they both try so hard to fit into what their parents expected for them and tell their passion comes along. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think it creates a really beautiful, full circle for both of them, one of them more satisfying than the other. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess in terms of like being more positive.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because most of the time I feel like when you're watching a storyline playout, it's we're paralleling like an 80 plot between worry and lane. [SPEAKER_00]: Like they both have very similar things going on. [SPEAKER_00]: They're both going on like a first date or like in you jump like worries going on this adventure with Logan and Lane is like also taking her first leap of like going on a date with Zach.

[SPEAKER_00]: So like we have very similar things happening between the two of them and like even in I forget the one where Lane and Zach are going on their little date where she finds out when he finds out that she's not going to have sex with him. [SPEAKER_00]: But like something very similar is happening with worry.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that overall, though, the story arc, their character arc, it's more lane in the warlight, or more closely lined. [SPEAKER_00]: I think in like the day-to-day, it's worrying lane that they're trying to parallel, but overall, it's more warlight and lane. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that this comes when both of them leave home, that like that's really the start of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's that key difference of the season five episode 22. [SPEAKER_00]: of Mrs. Kim finally seeing that she's not going to lose her daughter and lose her passion to her. [SPEAKER_00]: She's not going to let her fall and so she helps her and it's with the thing that Lane resented and didn't want to be a part of that she saves her because she sends her on this church tour like through all of these people and it's like her religion and the connections there that's saving Lane's passion and then when we come to season five episode [SPEAKER_00]: Lorelei, she goes to her parents to help her save Rory, like help her from floundering to like save this thing that she knows that Rory's passionate about, and ultimately they use the thing that Lorelei resents to pick Rory back up, and it crushes Lorelei, but in the end it's like satisfying Rory to do that, and like, is that satisfying her passion because her passion is Rory?

[SPEAKER_01]: This is tough because it's a great, great comparison to say that Laura Lies passion is worried because when I was thinking about that, I felt like the Laura Lies yearned for a life outside of her family, her passion didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: in the same way that Lane's led her out of her home.

[SPEAKER_01]: The same wasn't necessarily true of Lorelei. [SPEAKER_01]: Lorelei just wanted her freedom, and in a sense Lane did too. [SPEAKER_01]: Lorelei finds her passion in wanting to open her own in after leaving. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is the key difference between her and Lane. [SPEAKER_01]: And like the impetus there, but I never really thought about her passion being.

[SPEAKER_01]: Worried, and I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's so... [SPEAKER_01]: The difference though, in the parallel in season five up so 22 between Lane and Laura lie, is that yes, they go to their parents for, and it's almost like, at least, Mrs. Kim comes to her because she's like telling her mom she's going to give up.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, Lane goes to her mom and she's like, hey, I'm going to give up and she's like, Kim's don't quit and then she takes the reins. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think the key difference here, though, is that we're dealing with two people versus one person, because even though I mentioned earlier, like the matriarch of the family tends to take the lead in this storyline that we see unfold between Lane and her mom and Laura Lion Emily, I do think that we come to learn that Richard is the reason why they don't end up in a polarized plan.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think that if it was just Emily, they would have gone along with it, and I think so too, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of a bummer to see because I think that maternal instinct in hers like this is my daughter. [SPEAKER_01]: And we wanted to do an episode about the distinct differences between liberalized relationship with Emily, Richard, Richard, tending to lean more into worry and also how that affects Richard's relationship with the lower ally, but yeah, Emily nine times out of ten.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, Tune in this father's day for that, but I do think that Emily has a tendency to lean into what will keep her, what will keep her relationship with Laura lie intact. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think that you can say much different about Mrs. Kim in the situation. [SPEAKER_01]: She wants her daughter to succeed.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, there are nuanced differences when it comes to Emily and Laura Lion, her going to her about Rory, her passion in a lot of ways, but I do think that the father aspect to that can't be ignored because he is the reason why that didn't work out. [SPEAKER_01]: The way it was supposed to.

[SPEAKER_01]: Emily went along with it. [SPEAKER_01]: That's not true. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she does. [SPEAKER_00]: She does. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she does. [SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, I wonder what it would have looked like if Mr. Kim was a part of that story. [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't, but, you know, for sure, didn't answer the door that day when she showed up.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's tough because I do think that there is a deep parallel to be considered there and one of them is let down and one of them is not. [SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that that's where the roads kind of split a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: I do have a lot of similarities between Mrs. Kim and Emily even after that point because there's a lot that we learn about Mrs. Kim that I think that nurtures her relationship with Lane and I think that some of the same things have already happened between Emily and [SPEAKER_01]: being able to empathize, sympathize with them a little bit more, and like heal some of those childhood wounds that exist between the two of them, but we can get into that later.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a very interesting question that you pose, because I so wish that Laura had felt supported in that moment the same way that Lane did. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think that's kind of that moment where I was talking about earlier. [SPEAKER_00]: It turns into the kind of [SPEAKER_00]: Like we said, like Laura lies retelling of her own childhood, very strict, very suppressed, like she felt like she was locked up in the house and laying literally is.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this is when it switches to kind of like that. [SPEAKER_00]: What if Emily could soften herself just enough to what I want for my life? [SPEAKER_00]: And of course, she never like accepts it fully, but there is just like a softening that Mrs. Kim has. [SPEAKER_00]: that Emily never does and I think in part because Mrs. Kim is like one long line of unchanging expectations and methods and how she does something.

[SPEAKER_00]: With Emily, it's like incident after incident after incident so that they're always on like a roller coaster of like what's going to happen next? [SPEAKER_00]: Whereas like, Lane can always kind of anticipate what her mom's reaction is going to be. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that that leaves a lot of a lot more to work through for Emily and Laura live versus with Lane and Mrs. Kim.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just Mrs. Kim opening up a little bit more. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think we see that in season six, like when she sits her down and they have the [SPEAKER_00]: shots of alcohol, whatever it is that she like boards up the house before she brings it out with just hilarious. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she talks about not laying, needing to move on, but we need to. [SPEAKER_00]: And it feels like there are team in this. [SPEAKER_00]: And then of course, when we get to her wedding night, and she says that she's going to go and she's going to wear air plugs. [SPEAKER_00]: And in that episode, [SPEAKER_00]: I, the TARD because like we talk about Emily Crowda, I like Mrs. Kim, we call her Emily, so it's difficult in this episode for me.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I'm talking about Mrs. Kim, but I mean Emily, but I'm not talking about Emily, go more. [SPEAKER_00]: But Mrs. Kim, I feel like finally understands her role in this part of [SPEAKER_00]: Years down the line, she can stay and have a good time, but now the most and like clearest representation of them changing is her accepting that like the best and most comfortable place for both of them to experience as night is separate.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just think that Laura and Emily never really come to that place and it becomes this kind of like what if they could understand each other a little bit more and like give each other the space that they need, but they never do and they never really can because there's [SPEAKER_00]: just too much and they're both too inflammatory, the both.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's where like the difference is in characters also kind of come into play here is that like these characters are very different and despite the fact that like Lane and Laura like share a lot of similarities and you could also make the argument for Emily and Mrs. Kim they are at their core for different people with four like with different dynamics with each other.

[SPEAKER_01]: I will say I don't fully disagree with you on that moment because I agree that I don't know that Emily could really release control in that way that we see Mrs. Kim do and it is, like you said, a very satisfying moment. [SPEAKER_01]: But the moment where they have the shots and we see a different side to Mrs. Kim kind of embracing her daughter and being like, okay, I know you're sad, I know you're upset, the socks, what we move on.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And like we're a team, we move on. [SPEAKER_01]: That did feel a little end of season six. [SPEAKER_01]: So how aren't we? [SPEAKER_01]: How are we? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, when Emily says to Laurel, I after hearing her and driving driving Ms. Gilmore, like she gets her the house, like she's finally acquiesced to the idea of like you're going to be with this man.

[SPEAKER_01]: I can't change that. [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to be happy. [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to marry this man. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get you this house so that you have to rely. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to change [SPEAKER_01]: you can have your house and your courses with the man, like the love of your life and lower life you want to be like, it's not happening.

[SPEAKER_01]: And Emily comforts her in that moment. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I actually found those to be a little bit more of a parallel because it's kind of the first time that one of the first times that we see Emily really acquiesce to like, this is what's going to make my daughter happy. [SPEAKER_01]: and softens to her side of things.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it does make me wonder, like, we always feel like maybe they strike the match too hard and get the fire going too much with the Gilmourns and Laura Lye in season seven, because it just feels like the end of season six left us in a really soft place with them. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not soft, but like understanding place, especially after Friday nights are right for fighting, like once we got there, everyone feel [SPEAKER_00]: like no one was pointing their guns at no one.

[SPEAKER_00]: Did they still bring them potentially? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you know, it just feels like that's always kind of their ammo Yeah, but it concealed carry licenses and they're concealed [SPEAKER_00]: but it feels like like at any point they could have a sword fight for sure yeah for sure but i do wonder if in season seven if like what the conflicts would have been from an Amy mine from a perspective and like and from a damn perspective as we move into like big family drama because i do wonder if they could have gone to that point of i'm going to wear earplugs tonight when i go to sleep whatever the version of Emily and Richard that is [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not sure.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I wonder if that's kind of intentional to have like coming back to the Richard of it all that like he's the foil for Lorelie and Emily like someone has to come between them and in that moment it's Richard and like ultimately Emily is going to side with her husband because that's what she knows to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what she probably did when Lorelie was going up. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe there were instances where she felt like she needed to be softer on her or she agreed with her but like the Richard stepped in and told her what was what? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, there are times when I kind of feel like Mrs. Kim is the representation of both Emily and Richard.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I do think that kind of comes from, I think, Mr. Kim. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, Mr. Mr. and Mrs. Kim. [SPEAKER_01]: But I almost feel like her representing both sides is like the maternal instincts that Emily has. [SPEAKER_01]: We see a lot of that. [SPEAKER_01]: wanting to control, wanting to shape and mold their daughters in, you know, both Mrs. Kim and Emily.

[SPEAKER_01]: But where I think we sometimes see Richard is in the partnerships that their daughters have with other people. [SPEAKER_01]: Mrs. Kim, at some point along the way with Dave, has a willingness to adjust her expectations because she's like, okay, she feels something for this boy and I like this boy.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that we can say for sure that Richard liked Luke, but in you jump by jump jack, Emily's tactic is to insult him, and eventually, yes, and eventually threw out, threw out, season five, it is to break them up. [SPEAKER_01]: Whereas Richard sees it as an opportunity to essentially mold Luke into one he wants.

[SPEAKER_01]: Shape him. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I wrote. [SPEAKER_01]: I said, and Richard wants to [SPEAKER_01]: But like Mrs. Kim, I think in Zach, she at first is very much just like you will burn and hell. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I literally hate you, but when he wants to marry her daughter, she says I want to make sure that you can provide her with a good life and for that you're going to need to prove that to me by writing a hit song.

[SPEAKER_01]: Richard is like, okay, look, like we can't do anything about this. [SPEAKER_01]: So I might as well make sure that he can provide for her daughter. [SPEAKER_01]: So let's franchise this diner. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's franchise them. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's shave them. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's shave a franchise and you know, and I feel like Emily and Richard in that moment they're not on the same team because they're separated so like Emily has one way of thinking of it Richard has another and I think they're like that whether they're separate or they're not, but they're definitely not on the same team right now because they're [SPEAKER_00]: Physically separated, but it's their interaction that really cemented it when she was like What were you thinking about the club and who said you're not thinking ahead?

[SPEAKER_01]: You're not thinking ahead, and I do think that that's in the back of Mrs. Kim's mind when she realizes that like Lane and Zach are gonna be a couple. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Lane is not going to marry someone or be with someone that I thought she should be with [SPEAKER_01]: So let's pivot and let's figure out what that looks like and I think that is like the Richard on Mrs. Kim shoulder Even though there is still an Emily on Mrs. Kim shoulder being like this man is not suitable for my daughter.

[SPEAKER_01]: If it were up to me I would set her up with a Korean doctor immediately. [SPEAKER_01]: I would call the first one. [SPEAKER_01]: I could find but Yeah, this is her choice one. [SPEAKER_00]: I could find. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was a good. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a good [SPEAKER_00]: option.

[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about him in a minute because there are, there's like a giant giant parallel between Lorelie and Lane in that episode in the bit of basket of this code. [SPEAKER_01]: I know we kind of got ahead of ourselves a little into the later seasons, but I did start with kind of the early seasons in the ways that I feel like they kind of set Lane up to be like a minion Lorelie in a lot of ways.

[SPEAKER_01]: Starting from the very beginning and season one when Lane puts on her [SPEAKER_01]: When are you going to tell your parents you listen to the evil rock music you're an American teenager for God's sake? [SPEAKER_01]: And she's like worry if my parents still get upset over the portion size of American food I seriously doubt I'm going to make any inroads with Eminem like that feels very like the first thing I thought of with like the American portion sizes was like King size candy bars King size [SPEAKER_01]: that feels like, you know, it's obscene that is the life that lane, like, really, that's the roof lane lived under it's just like everything is absurd, American culture is absurd and I know that comes from a Korean standpoint, Emily and Richard's more so comes from a classist standpoint, but regardless, that's kind of the life they grew up and I don't know if Laura like changed her clothes when she left the house, but I could totally see

[SPEAKER_01]: her to. [SPEAKER_00]: I could totally see her like going to school with her hem lower and raising it when she got there. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we're on the way there, that moment also reminds me of in the deer hunters when Lane has a Snickers bar and where he's like, oh, this is mine, but also taking us back to the only time we really see Laura lie as a teen, which is in the flashback of deer Emily and Richard and the moment that Emily thinks that she's gained weight, she's like put your sweats on and go [SPEAKER_00]: two very different reasons for controlling what they're eating, yeah, but still like the result.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's controlling. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's controlling them. [SPEAKER_01]: And we get that from the very beginning in normalized rhetoric with Emily. [SPEAKER_01]: When they have that fight in the kitchen, the famous one in the pilot, Emily says, when you get pregnant, you get married. [SPEAKER_01]: I know.

[SPEAKER_01]: So many famous fights in the kitchen. [SPEAKER_01]: When you get pregnant, you get married. [SPEAKER_01]: And those values were instilled in Emily, Mrs. Kim, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And Lorelai says, you wanted to control me. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is exactly how Lane feels towards her parents.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the second, like the second episode is also a good representation. [SPEAKER_01]: The man who murdered love when Lane comes running over and Lorelai just like a bandence what she's doing to just absolutely like dance like a teenager in the living room with her. [SPEAKER_01]: That is her.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because I think it's super meant overall lean is a lot more similar to Laura Lye. [SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: I also think that Laura Lye really gravitates towards lean because like I think that ultimately lean storyline could be an expedited version of Laura Lye storyline of like what would happen if Laura Lye had a Laura Lye for her in the movie that lean had a Laura Lye because like when that moment I'm like, oh look at you guys [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's so true.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's one of the reasons by Brewery gravitate towards Lane, is because Lane is a lot like her mom. [SPEAKER_01]: And one of the first glimpses, we see if that, like the other side of Lane's personality, we hear about it a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: But in the fourth episode, when Brewery gets hit by the deer and she calls Lane and Lane is in her closet with the whole lamp's in the music and stuff on the night.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is so lore lie, this is so her. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think, to our besties' points in the question box, I don't think lore line necessarily [SPEAKER_01]: who she was, per se, but when we get to the Tootsie rolls in season six, the Tootsie rolls, what was under the Tootsie rolls?

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, that was like, oh, that's kind of bothering me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's got a bother me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was floor board life for a more life. [SPEAKER_01]: She was hiding things. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, when she was for returns, when Christopher returns, um, famously, you know, they talk about all the ways in which Christopher would escape from there and lower life would go [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, maybe she was a little more open about it than Lane was, but like, or like, didn't care about the consequences.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like, she, she was going to happen. [SPEAKER_00]: So she just like accepted that something would happen. [SPEAKER_01]: She wasn't as scared of her parents as Lane was scared of her mom. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, Lane's mom and still, and still the fear of God and her truly and honestly, yeah, literally and figuratively.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but when Laura Leigh goes to Mrs. Cam after the double date in season one, when Lane of course goes out with Rory and Dean and Todd, she just has a miserable time with and then that's getting a storage trouble. [SPEAKER_00]: Poor Todd, like not poor Todd, but he poor Lane. [SPEAKER_00]: Thinking she liked the tide and like yeah, it wasn't even a good day.

[SPEAKER_00]: She wasn't even a good day. [SPEAKER_01]: She got so much trouble. [SPEAKER_00]: The same thing when she is pregnant, like sex wasn't even good. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just like, oh, I can't wait to have a good time and then have the consequences. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.

[SPEAKER_01]: But what Laura like says to her in that moment is really, really telling about her childhood. [SPEAKER_01]: She says to Mrs. Kim, you know, it doesn't always work to lock a kid up and throw away the key. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's when Mrs. Kim says I didn't throw the key away. [SPEAKER_01]: It's in the kitchen.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love her. [SPEAKER_01]: I love it, she's like, okay, all right, go on, but she says when I was a teenager, my parents tried to keep me locked up. [SPEAKER_01]: They tried to force me to become what they had in mind. [SPEAKER_01]: In my case, it really didn't work. [SPEAKER_01]: I just think sometimes if I had had a little more space or someone to listen to me, things might have turned out different.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that is a very big driving force as to why Laura like gives a lane a space to be who she is. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to talk later this this year and around Mother's Day about the different parenting tactics between Laura lie and Mrs. [SPEAKER_01]: We talk a lot on this podcast about how like sometimes Laura lies like I have to tell Mrs. Kim and then she's like totally fine with lying to Mrs. Kim.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't tell your mom this is this episode and the scene is going to come back and to play at some point, but from the purposes of this conversation, I really do think that Laura is speaking to Mrs. Kim about this and an effort to be like, I don't want you to lose your daughter the way that my parents lost me because this kind of parenting is the exact reason why they don't have a relationship with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think felt like when saying that Lane has a lower line, we wish that lower line had a lower line. [SPEAKER_00]: It's more than just giving her that space to have some place to bring the CD to dance to provide her with pizza, to fill out with ice cream, to give her that space to have these two people who just let her be exactly who she is.

[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also that person to go to her mom and kind of like, [SPEAKER_00]: defend her in some ways, but like in a way that Mrs. Kim usually hears. [SPEAKER_00]: And especially when Lane and Mrs. Kim are kind of on the outs and Laura like gives her the updates. [SPEAKER_00]: And she seems like she's not listening, but of course she is.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she's the same thing on every word. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: even to the point that they allow Boralai to alter her dress for Lane's wedding. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that kind of shows what Boralai has meant to Mrs. Kim and what she means to Lane that had there been a kind person in Boralai's life who understood how to get through to Emily.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think that things might have turned out a little bit differently to have a little bit of a middleman. [SPEAKER_01]: that you didn't ask to be a Batman, like Lee never asks her to go to her mom and talk to her on her behalf or I just does it she knows that I do think we got a little bit of that a little glimpse of that and it could have been expanded on via Mia like Mia and Emily having that conversation in season two.

[SPEAKER_01]: when in, um, in an ounce of ends and ounce of ends. [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: When we meet Mia, and we start to get an understanding of this person that actually gave Laura lie a place to be herself. [SPEAKER_01]: Not just have a job, not just work her way up, but Mia understood her.

[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that there is a perspective there. [SPEAKER_01]: The perspective that Mia has on Laura lie is what Laura lie has on laying. [SPEAKER_01]: to Mrs. Kim and to Emily. [SPEAKER_01]: For me, uh, where she's just like, Laura is a good, she's a great person and a great mom. [SPEAKER_01]: And like, she's a really hard worker and all of these compliments that Emily, I'm sure sees.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, to the point where at the end of the conversation, she's like, can you send me pictures, please? [SPEAKER_01]: Because I missed that part of. [SPEAKER_01]: of her. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And I really want it. [SPEAKER_01]: But I think that Laura Lye is trying to be that for she's trying to be that advocate for Lane.

[SPEAKER_01]: And the way that I think was for Laura Lye, she just didn't have as much content. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously, that was her first time. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, didn't have the contact, but also felt really righteous in her decision to not push Laura Lye to reconnect with her mom, because I think that in that instance, Laura Lye, [SPEAKER_00]: would and does encourage Lane to reconnect with her mom.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like total guard. [SPEAKER_00]: This is like all of the hurt that exists between the elder Gilmins as Brett calls them. [SPEAKER_00]: She never advocates for Lane to run away or to ignore Mrs. Kim and the problems that come with it. [SPEAKER_00]: She always wants her to go back home and she always wants her to talk to her mom.

[SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: But do you think that that comes from a place of [SPEAKER_00]: I think it comes from a place of loralight knowing what rory needs to her. [SPEAKER_00]: And loralight knowing that Lane circumstances are a bit different, different, but like knowing, like having talked to Mrs. Kim so much and knowing how much she wants Lane in her life and like knowing that she kind of doesn't have anyone else because where is Mr. Kim?

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just her talking to all of her antique chairs and her Bible study. [SPEAKER_00]: So like she needs Lane in her life. [SPEAKER_00]: Definitely. [SPEAKER_00]: I do think it, on the other end of it, it is less from a perspective of being a daughter and more of being a mother that I totally, totally understand that.

[SPEAKER_01]: I want to take this to a huge parallel that's going to take us back to double date and this conversation that we, that Laura like has with Mrs. Kim, and this is in the bit of asking at which when we talked about Henry, I wanted to bring this up. [SPEAKER_01]: So, after Mrs. Kim realizes that David the D. Quay cousin, [SPEAKER_00]: No.

[SPEAKER_01]: The plan's been foiled and Henry called trying to sell a subscription to the Wall Street Journal to Mrs. Kim and it backfired. [SPEAKER_01]: Lane and Mrs. Kim get into a screaming match. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is one of the ways in which I feel like Lane rebels against her mother. [SPEAKER_00]: She's just like, this feels like a real, lower-life Emily moment.

[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, a blowout. [SPEAKER_01]: They come to blows. [SPEAKER_01]: They get into a screen match about Henry, and then Lane is just like whole up in her room, heartbroken, because Henry is going to take somebody else to the prom, because she did tell her mom, she kept him a secret. [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't want to be a secret anymore, and now she's regretting everything.

[SPEAKER_01]: And Mrs. Kim says she comes in, she doesn't know the circumstances and says, [SPEAKER_01]: I know you're upset but I have these rules for reason. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm your mother. [SPEAKER_01]: I know what's best for you. [SPEAKER_01]: You're too young, too vulnerable. [SPEAKER_01]: American boys have different values.

[SPEAKER_01]: They don't understand respect. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You get hurt. [SPEAKER_01]: I do all of this so you don't get hurt. [SPEAKER_01]: And now here you are hurt. [SPEAKER_01]: And then hilariously as soon as she finds out he's Korean, her tune completely changed. [UNKNOWN]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_00]: We could call this parents. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but that's what I was trying to reference earlier. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, American boys. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, immediately after that scene We switched back to Friday night dinner where we've just come from Lorelie and worry coming to blows over Jess because Lorelie does not like Jess She knows that everything with Dean and you talk to you for a second [SPEAKER_01]: We was very upset, and so Laura Lye is starting to feel like I don't like that you're spending time with this boy, and so Emily and Laura Lye are talking about it, and Emily agrees with her 100% which is freaking Laura Lye out, but this is what Emily says to her, and I pulled the quote, but paraphrased in the same way I did with Mrs. Kim.

[SPEAKER_01]: You are her mother, Laura Lie, you must set boundaries and restrictions, it's your job. [SPEAKER_01]: She's young, I know worries good girl, but good girls can go bad with the wrong influences. [SPEAKER_01]: You absolutely must keep her from that boy. [SPEAKER_01]: If you have to change her curve, you lock her up, throw away the key, whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't go astray, you do it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Her judgment cannot be trusted here. [SPEAKER_01]: She's a young girl and knows nothing, you are her eyes and her ears and her brain for as long as it takes to make sure she doesn't make any ridiculous choices in her life. [SPEAKER_01]: And Laura, I realize this is not the way that she wants to pair and worry because that is ultimately the way that Emily and Mrs. Kim are parenting their children to take it back to the lock it up and throw away the key from season one episode 12 which Laura, I says to Mrs. Kim and also to have these like two scenes parallel each other back to back, which I never [SPEAKER_01]: Really thought about them kind of tethering lane and Laura lie together in that way.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really only thinking of Laura lie and worry and lane and Mrs. Kim. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it really does speak to the parenting styles of both both of them. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I was like, oh, this really really connects lane and Laura lie. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and is the entire reason why Laurel I choose is to parent worry the way that she does because one of the answers in the question box like I think one of the first answers on how they were similar Lane and Laurel I is that they had mother's not friends.

[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: There's no empathy there. [SPEAKER_00]: That so true because it reminds me of in the clamor and the clanger when Mrs. Kim of course learns that Lane is not there anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: She didn't come home. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I think those are the acronyms and she runs into Luke in this beautiful snowy scene.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's arriving to the diner and she stops to tell her that Lane is not going to be at work or she stops to tell him that Lane is not going to be at work and he says, I know she called me. [SPEAKER_00]: She like they've got a good kid and she's upset because she called Laura last she called Luke but she didn't call her and [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's that interesting thing of like, yeah, she's not going to call you.

[SPEAKER_00]: She was running away from you. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you were the reason that she had to do this, so of course she's going to call these other people first. [SPEAKER_00]: And she is very reliable and you should know that about her, but like you have created this relationship where she's not going to call you are not going to be her first person to call.

[SPEAKER_00]: And like that's her breaking, but it's [SPEAKER_00]: of course what's there and it does of course remind me of there's the rub when Emily is like why can't I have what you and Rory have and Mrs. Kim doesn't really have another person like that to directly relate it to maybe she could relate it to the way the Loreline warrior friends but like [SPEAKER_00]: But she doesn't know that.

[SPEAKER_00]: She doesn't want that at all. [SPEAKER_00]: But it kind of just calls into question that idea that Emily has of like, why are things so different? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, why wouldn't you call me in that instance? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, why would you call anyone out except for me? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of feels like that similar sort of, um, why can't I have what you guys have? [SPEAKER_00]: Why can't I be the one that you call once you feel like this happens? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, Emily, [SPEAKER_00]: It's because your rules started this. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I feel like that aligns a little bit.

[SPEAKER_00]: But a detail that I really loved, again, from season four, that I had never really noticed before, because I, of course, did that classic thing that we do here to prep for a certain character, which is I went through the entire series and watched every single scene they were in. [SPEAKER_00]: Is it a good way to watch the show?

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: You guys should try it sometime. [SPEAKER_00]: Pick a character and just go to that and see what happens. [SPEAKER_00]: But something I had never connected before was that in season four, last week, fight to speak tights when Mrs. Kim decide she's going to make a social call to Lane's house.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she brings Lane's favorite pudding. [SPEAKER_00]: extra chunky the way she likes it. [SPEAKER_00]: And it feels like a piece offering the same way season one episode six where he's birthday parties when Emily serves pudding put a Friday night dinner because it feels like this like connection that she's trying to make like here's something you like and I love to that of all the things that could have been it was putting it was putting that that felt so like full circle between Mrs. Cam and Emily trying to reach their daughters but I was like [SPEAKER_00]: Look, there's the pudding moms, the pudding moms, it's very sweet.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: I think at the end of it all, there are some endearing moments between Laura Lye and Lane and their moms that, like I said before, like create a level of like empathy, sympathy that they have, but no more than when in the wedding episode for Lane, [SPEAKER_01]: is very, very strict, possibly even stricter than her own mother, and that she had to basically hide her life from her.

[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a sense of connection there. [SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like those moments for Laura Lane Emily come in the form of Grant's arrival was going to say that of like, it's like someone who has even more expectations than they had. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, she, Grant has like a sense of propriety for society that far outweighs anything that Emily and Richard are doing.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then we see that same thing with Mrs. Kim's mom, whose name is also Mrs. Kim. [SPEAKER_00]: didn't really share about the commissar's cams is what yeah he needs her mother not but I think it's her all mother yeah it's like she has way more rules and expectations surrounding her religion than Mrs. Kim seemed to and I love that escalation for both of them for the thing that like it's driving them to be controlling of their child [SPEAKER_01]: Totally.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of those times where like Mrs. Kim and Lane feel like the Laurelian worry in that scenario. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, and that's kind of how it feels when Laurelian Emily or talking, it's like that'll do. [SPEAKER_01]: Pig is the first thing that comes to mind when she's like [SPEAKER_01]: trying to teach her that, you know, it's all about perspective and it's all about the way you take the things that she says because at the end of that scene, I love when Emily is like, Laura, like, what are you thinking about?

[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, that's stupid monkey lamp or whatever, and she goes, me too. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's just like all about how you look at it. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love the that'll do peg that'll do because it's bringing them closer together. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love that together. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love that those parallels exist there for them because it does allow us to see Emily and Mrs. Kim in a bit of a different line.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's different, like, because that also reminds me of, like, when Grand, like, arrives unexpectedly and she asks if she wants to go get the stuff in the basement and Emily's like, yes, we help me, like, she like, like, acquiesces to it and like, oh, I love it, but like, she helps her through this and it's so it's endearing.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is kind of similar to the episode and I've get a psychic out of you, Lane's wedding episode where they're like running around and arranging the house. [SPEAKER_01]: something's happening. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to get the house ready. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: So I think on the whole at the end of the day it's so easy to spot the differences between the two of them.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think like of course the discrepancy in wealth between them. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you've got an immigrant mother who's [SPEAKER_01]: seemingly built this business from the ground up versus a family that comes from an extreme amount of wealth. [SPEAKER_01]: That and in of itself is going to create a lot of differences between the way that Lane and Laurelite were raised and maybe the reasons behind why they have the values they do and why they put the expectations they do on their daughters, respectively, respectively rather differ.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it was more fun for me to spot the similarities between the two. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that the differences, though, lead to similarities between them. [SPEAKER_00]: And it really just shows you that a very unsupportive, very suppressed upbringing where your parents don't really see you regardless of the reason behind it is going to breed the same type of person.

[SPEAKER_00]: not always because like I loved like with of course we had my and hunter on last week. [SPEAKER_00]: I loved in past episodes where he talks about really relating to Lane and like having that similar upbringing. [SPEAKER_00]: Does he have the same exact upbringing as Miss Lane? [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely not.

[SPEAKER_00]: He yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Lain is Korean and Hunter is not, and they come from very different backgrounds, but he feels so related to her because of what the result of it is, and like what that feels like. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that it's quite interesting that you can put these very different circumstances to these characters and have them end up in very similar.

[SPEAKER_00]: plot positions. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, they're, I think as a whole, like in the day-to-day, like, episodically, she is paralleling gory a lot, but I think story arc, she's paralleling lore a lot more, which I think is fascinating. [SPEAKER_00]: I do see. [SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like, it feels like mother, like daughter, whereas, like, those aren't similar.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, you were being paralleled to my daughter on the daily, but, and overall, you're being compared to the mother. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that makes any sense at all. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I find it very fascinating and I'm glad we got to kind of explore that because I've been thinking about it so much since it first came to our attention I was like, oh, this is such a great topic to lean into you know, and I really wish I I hope one of you remembers like, oh, it was this episode where you guys talked about it here because I'd love to go back and hear what we were talking about then that [SPEAKER_00]: triggered this because we were not this was not like just us talking the two of us off pod.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's quite difficult because we have Gilmore revisited Gilmore to consider the rewatch club, which I don't think it was in the rewatch club. [SPEAKER_00]: And so why there's have a million episodes of Gilmore to say, but it's there somewhere. [SPEAKER_00]: It's quite difficult. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no anybody remembers.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite difficult to [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we can't talk about these thoughts. [SPEAKER_00]: We say so much and we have so much episodes which is fun and incredible. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's hard when you're trying to remember a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: It's hard. [SPEAKER_01]: It's hard. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, as always, thanks for listening.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: When I was talking to Alice, who did my nails yesterday, she was talking how much she doesn't like listening to podcasts.

[SPEAKER_00]: She likes watching them because she likes feeling like she's in the room with them. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, well, you can watch ours on YouTube, which I think is quite fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I do. [SPEAKER_00]: I like watching podcasts too, not to like promote a different show. [SPEAKER_00]: But I've been watching the Bridgeton season four part one podcast.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're full of good memories. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think that's, no, I just think it's called the official Bridgeton podcast. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, only part one at the time of recording is last week, it will have come out for y'all. [SPEAKER_00]: but they only did it, like they did part one and part two.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so, of course, the first half of the podcast is only part one, so we don't know anything about part two, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they had my podcast now on Netflix. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and I think we're much more loved watching it. [SPEAKER_00]: So, if you guys like watching it, because I love Allison Hammond, and she just, like, is so expressive and talks with her hands.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you guys want to see our expressions and talking with our hands and our backgrounds to keep on changing, yeah, I want to have her on TV too. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we have a time over here. [SPEAKER_01]: We have a good, we have a good old time. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Next week's episode is a little different.

[SPEAKER_01]: No true segue can come. [SPEAKER_01]: No true segue. [SPEAKER_01]: That's one. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they usually were pretty good at segueing from one to another. [SPEAKER_01]: The segue that I thought of before this was Lane. [SPEAKER_01]: She once died her hair blonde to go. [SPEAKER_01]: That's true.

[SPEAKER_01]: And next week's episode, we're going to talk about the other women on Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: The Rachel, the Lindsay, the Nicole, the Blons. [SPEAKER_01]: The Sherry, the Sherry, the Penalyn Law. [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh. [SPEAKER_01]: And we'll have more to say on that in the next episode.
