[SPEAKER_01]: Five, six, seven, eight, maize all. [SPEAKER_01]: And we'll send Marvelous. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what have been redundant, but you don't know that yet. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, here we go. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi everybody, welcome back to Gilmour Disay with Tara and Haley. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm Tara, this is Haley, Hi Haley.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi Tara. [SPEAKER_01]: Happy Marvelous Week. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi Miss Haley. [SPEAKER_01]: It's March to this month. [SPEAKER_01]: A March to this month, a Marvelous Week. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is because a Marvelous Time is making its debut this Friday on Patreon. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm so excited!
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm as excited now as I was when we first recorded the first episode, but again, coming out on Friday, March 20th, you'll get a preview in our long preview on Thursday, which if you have not seen Mazel, it's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: It's only like the last 10 minutes that we actually start talking about Mazel.
[SPEAKER_00]: It takes us a while. [SPEAKER_00]: We talk about maize a lot of the whole time. [SPEAKER_01]: It's that we are like re-capping the episode. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the last 10 minutes. [SPEAKER_01]: Because we talk about our history with the show, the history of the show a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: We're understanding today, our different understandings of the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very funny. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to read to you what Haley remembered. [SPEAKER_01]: It is a lore like a more style monkey monkey underpants. [SPEAKER_01]: Not even intentionally, not even intentionally, just a stream of consciousness that made me laugh so hard when you sent it to me.
[SPEAKER_01]: And whether you've seen the show once you've never seen it at all, you've seen it a million times. [SPEAKER_01]: I still think you're going to have a really good time. [SPEAKER_00]: Measle is, I think our Thursday episode is kind of like a pitch. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you love Gilmore Girls and you have not seen Measle, [SPEAKER_00]: Let us, let us bring you in.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try this first episode and see how you feel and if you're like, no, I think if you don't like the first episode, the dipout, like you're done, but I encourage all of you if you are a Gilmore Girls fan to watch the first episode of the Marvelous Mrs. Mesa. [SPEAKER_01]: Whether you want to join us on that journey or not, no, like you don't have to join us if you don't want to.
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, never, but it's one of the most brilliant pilots. [SPEAKER_01]: I've ever seen. [SPEAKER_00]: It's excellent. [SPEAKER_00]: It's truly excellent. [SPEAKER_00]: 10 out of 10. [SPEAKER_00]: One note. [SPEAKER_00]: Terragent and have the note. [SPEAKER_00]: I had the note. [SPEAKER_00]: You'll find out the note if you watch the fetalism tour episode about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you listen to the episode, yeah, it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: But I have no notes. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's absolutely stunning. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it is Amy's best work. [SPEAKER_01]: It really is. [SPEAKER_00]: The thing I think I said was that with Gilmore Girls, it's so notable because of the dialogue and the width they speak in the silly little quirky fun town.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the speed of the dialogue and the jokes that they're making fit more cleanly in the world of Mitch Mazele and the people around her, like, [SPEAKER_00]: It just feels like Amy was made for this show in this era and her style, that if you love Gilmore Girls, but want to see it maybe like where it was meant to be, I would say you watch Measel because it still feels like Amy and Dan.
[SPEAKER_00]: It still feels like what you'll bug Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_00]: It's still like the strongest woman, funniest woman, most glamorous woman you know. [SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like if you like Gilmore Girls and all the things you like about it, it's there. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you're having only really seen the pilot and only remembering the pilot that's far.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you like Gilmour Girls and you go into this and you don't like it, I don't know what to say. [SPEAKER_00]: She the woman was too stunned to speak. [SPEAKER_00]: She is no more to say. [SPEAKER_01]: No more to say. [SPEAKER_01]: I have no more to say if you don't like it, but like nobody truly I haven't met a person who's a Gilmour Girls fan who didn't like Mazel and if you're out there that's okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no job that I didn't meet you actually. [SPEAKER_01]: I'd actually love to meet, come forward in the parking lot. [SPEAKER_00]: Come forward in the YouTube comments, not in the parking lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Not the parking lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Speaking of being on YouTube though, today we launched our new website, which also includes new merch, and we have our marvelous time at Tease.
[SPEAKER_01]: which I love Haley's is so cute. [SPEAKER_01]: She's wearing the black one with the pink font. [SPEAKER_01]: I love it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's marvelous time. [SPEAKER_01]: Head on over to YouTube if you haven't seen it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so cute. [SPEAKER_01]: And there's a little cropped comfort colors.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's on the fully. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a very, very beautiful shirt. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's all like super cropped. [SPEAKER_01]: It just like hits at the top of your jeans, which is perfect. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yeah, it's perfect tea to bear with jeans, because it just like hits perfectly where you want it to.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not too cropped, it's not too long. [SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely our leggings tea. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you want one that's like more gene-friendly, which next week, we might be having some more in the style, if you do like it. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, spring is bringing. [SPEAKER_00]: So this website of ours has been long time coming.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have been deciding and working on this website for over a year with Emma Mikkeldrick, who is with ESM Creative. [SPEAKER_01]: Emma's amazing. [SPEAKER_01]: She actually did our rebrand when we rebranded Gilmourdesay and did our whole photo shoot and everything, so we knew we could trust her with our website and she really came through.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's had it ready for us for... [SPEAKER_00]: It was awesome, it was an Emma, it was us. [SPEAKER_00]: But if you want to see all of the new things that we have over there, our newsletter will live there, then go more to say Gazette, of course, with all the sorts of updates there, which were really excited about what we think it looks quite.
[SPEAKER_00]: Marble is. [SPEAKER_00]: If you like. [SPEAKER_01]: I think so too. [SPEAKER_01]: It only took us four years, but we finally have a proper website. [SPEAKER_01]: It only took us quite some time. [SPEAKER_01]: We're really excited so we launched that yesterday and it includes a new merch and you'll be able to go over there and the old merch out.
[SPEAKER_01]: So over there too. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's over there. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: It's still intact. [SPEAKER_00]: It's still intact. [SPEAKER_00]: Greatfully. [SPEAKER_01]: So those are our marvelous time teas. [SPEAKER_01]: And if you want to join us for a marvelous time, the podcast on Patreon.
[SPEAKER_01]: We launch this Friday, March 20th at patreon.com slash Gilmortase. [SPEAKER_01]: You'll find the every episode that we're going to post of a marvelous time is going to be there for our super cool party people and our vicious trowelups. [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to join either of those Patreon tiers you'll get a whole back catalog of episodes from Gilmore revisited the rewatch club and we also have our life in depth besties tier, which is still in Gilmore revisited and they are on season five.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want to move through it more slowly, yeah, I can see that, but typical party people's vicious trauma get all of our new episodes plus every episode that we've. [SPEAKER_00]: kind of ever release. [SPEAKER_00]: Ever released there? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is really fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Much to enjoy.
[SPEAKER_01]: More to enjoy. [SPEAKER_01]: So head on over patreon.com slash Gilmore to say. [SPEAKER_00]: Or you can find it in our show notes. [SPEAKER_00]: You can also find it on a website. [SPEAKER_00]: You can find it on our Instagram. [SPEAKER_00]: Anywhere you go, it will lead you there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we lead.
[SPEAKER_00]: You will follow on anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: We go right nicely done. [SPEAKER_01]: Really nicely done. [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: But on Thursday, we actually did a rerun of an episode we recorded and released the years ago. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just so crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: We run like my little Gilmore.
[SPEAKER_00]: We run runs. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, so I thought it would be really fun to do a Gilmore to say revisit episode where we talked about Amy Sherman [SPEAKER_01]: to the creation, inception, and production of Gilmour Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: And so, at the end of that episode, we said, you know, when we get to Mazel, if we ever get to Mazel, we'll do a whole episode about like, Amy's journey to that.
[SPEAKER_00]: 23 was so long ago that it felt like this felt like a lifetime away. [SPEAKER_00]: It's true. [SPEAKER_00]: Today. [SPEAKER_00]: It's true. [SPEAKER_00]: I did close that episode, though. [SPEAKER_00]: I went back and I listened to it and I was like, oh my gosh, this is also fascinating things, girls, because I remember most of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there are two things that I was like, oh, I don't remember that. [SPEAKER_00]: That was fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So what was my voice? [SPEAKER_00]: Your voice? [SPEAKER_00]: In 2023, my voice was so strange. [SPEAKER_00]: In what way? [SPEAKER_00]: It was different. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did I sound different? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, usually I'm admittedly when I listen to our episodes, like, replay them all, listen at like 1.7 speed just so I can get through it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I started to listen to it at that. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what's wrong with my voice? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it just fast.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I went back and listened to it at one. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, who is this? [SPEAKER_00]: it was me. [SPEAKER_00]: It was three years ago my voice sounded so different. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow. [SPEAKER_00]: That's so funny. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you were still learning how to talk?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Talk? [SPEAKER_01]: The right page of 30. [SPEAKER_00]: There's almost got its sound. [SPEAKER_01]: She was learning how to talk. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that, you know, as you settle in and get more comfortable. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think we've got more comfortable on the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're voice inevitably drops a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we'll see. [SPEAKER_01]: You're just going to drop into web anyway. [SPEAKER_01]: We did this episode and it was really fun to do a deep dive on Amy. [SPEAKER_01]: And we wanted to save doing the journey from Gilmore to Mazeal for when we started Mazeal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And here we are. [SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe that was three years ago. [SPEAKER_01]: So we wanted to rerun it for you guys. [SPEAKER_01]: So you guys could listen because we had to listen to be like, what do we talk about? [SPEAKER_01]: Where did we come from? [SPEAKER_01]: Who are we, where do we come from and this was really, really fun because I wanted to do the journey of Amy and Dan from where they forget Dan can not forget Dan, no, we have to stand Dan stand Dan stand on this podcast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Amy and Dan from when they left Gilmore Girls in 2006 to what brought them to produce Amy's second very successful series, The Marvelous Misses Maze All. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really sad way to freeze that. [SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_00]: Because it was her second very successful, but it was her third series.
[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, it was her fourth series if the return of Jezbel James, if he's experiencing her, it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, because bun heads is so iconic, and I do want to talk about bun heads. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think within the Gilmore fandom, people think of Gilmore girls, and then they think of bun heads, and then they think of Mazeal.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not the Gilmore fandom in like the Amy Sherman Paladin or universe. [SPEAKER_01]: They really think of that and they love Sutton. [SPEAKER_00]: They love, I feel like it's iconic in their own, in their own lore because of the Sutton of it all. [SPEAKER_01]: But when you think of her two iconic, I would argue like maybe household name series.
[SPEAKER_01]: You've got Gilmore girls and you've got the Marvelous Mrs. Miesel and the spectrum and the journey in between that is what we're here to talk about today because it is very interesting and I learned a lot of things that I didn't otherwise know. [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, I'm very excited and I wonder if you knew about these things because like I didn't come up with [SPEAKER_01]: Amy and what she was doing after Gilmore Girls, she was just like my favorite creator who created the show that I really know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she was like the part of it that I was like as a teenager at the most interested in. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I then settled into just rewatching Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, endlessly, non-stop. [SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't that I was necessarily keeping up with Amy herself in her career.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was more so that I was like, I was in retrospect preparing for this podcast for a decade, and wasn't necessarily keeping up with Amy. [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know much about her from like the end of Gilmore Girls or her end of Gilmore Girls rather until ATX, until the reunion and totally, little bit of like what launched her into Amazon.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and I'm also really excited to talk about that because I want to know what you found something that we did in our last Amy episode was it was like we both did research and then brought it to the table and I love that There's a little bit more that I'm bringing in here solely because Haley didn't want to get spoiled on Measle and so she's like I don't want to read anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: I read everything prior to 2017 Yeah, because I learned a spoiler in just like when I was like reading the like blurbs on Google like [SPEAKER_00]: Like how dare you put a spoiler in the blurb that I'm trying to not be spoiled by so Terino's a lot more than I do just simply for the fact that I don't want to know anything I want to know a zero.
[SPEAKER_01]: She really wants to know zero and the spoiler you got spoiled on is actually something you already knew It's just something you didn't remember [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was it was being hidden in season one, even I didn't spoil it for myself, and I knew it. [SPEAKER_01]: Impressive. [SPEAKER_01]: It's impressive.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're all very. [SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for you. [SPEAKER_00]: My brain can compartmentalize so hard that it didn't even remember it. [SPEAKER_01]: You're right, you're right, and that is a feat that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, so let's pick up in 2006. [SPEAKER_01]: Amy and Dan have departed Gilmore Girls in a dispute with the WB, we're all aware of what happened, we discussed that and dissected it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They hit an impasse and the show goes on with out them, but then in August of 2006, Amy was approached about developing a new series for Fox. [SPEAKER_01]: And you guys heard Haley mentioned the return of adjustable James. [SPEAKER_01]: Did we talk about that in our first Amy episode? [SPEAKER_01]: I only skimmed through it, so I didn't listen to the whole thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: We got up until Gilmore, that's what I thought. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I did a bit of a deep dive. [SPEAKER_01]: This is a show that was much lesser known than any of her other shows, because I didn't even know about it until like 2022, 2023. [SPEAKER_01]: I did it in the spotcast. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was like, uh, what?
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is a show called The Return of Jezebel James, and the executive producers, of course, were Amy and Dan, [SPEAKER_01]: and utter composer on the Wikipedia page, it says Grandly Phillips, which I thought, yeah, which Sam Phillips is on nasal when I noticed that in the credits, I was so thrilled.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: That relationship is so darling and I'll get into that actually a little bit later, but there are a lot of people who are in this series and I would love to one day do like a deep dive, try and find those episodes because they were released on iTunes at some point, but it would be [SPEAKER_01]: interesting because it's the only show I know of Amy's besides like Rosanne because obviously this is like Amy's show.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was the creator executive producer versus being in the writer's room being a producer on Rosanne. [SPEAKER_01]: That has a laugh track. [SPEAKER_01]: What? [SPEAKER_01]: It has a laugh track. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a true [SPEAKER_00]: We are going to find this, and we are going to watch over our Patreon besties, and we are going to do full.
[SPEAKER_00]: We are going to return to the return of Jesse Mal James. [SPEAKER_01]: So also a fun fact, a little fun Gilmore fact, Scott Cohen, aka Max Medina, is also in this series. [SPEAKER_01]: And he is like, I believe he was one of the love interests, because there are some promotional photos of him and Parker Posey.
[SPEAKER_00]: Parker Posey is just what you think. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I'd well do believe we should get Scott on the phone someone's call Scott Cohen Someone doesn't have a number get him on Thank you so much for dialing with your mouth I dialed way too many numbers, but you know Scott Cohen has a much longer number than ever No, it's every one he's very hard to reach and it's because he has 12 digits in his phone number anyway [SPEAKER_01]: So, according to a 2008 article which was published on March 2, 2008, I did a lot of New York times, dives in here because you can search people's names within the New York Times archives, and it'll come up like every time they're mentioned.
[SPEAKER_01]: It said the network hoped that with her background in traditional multi-camera situation comedy and her ability to appeal to young women, [SPEAKER_01]: She, meaning Amy Sherman Paladino, would create a show that could serve the sizable female audience that was already tuning into American Idol.
[SPEAKER_01]: Days later, she presented the network, Jezebel James, about a motivated career woman who learns that she is unable to have a child and turns her estranged younger sister to carry a baby for her. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love that at the end of the day, Amy always wants to write about the complications with him family dynamics.
[SPEAKER_01]: That is what Amy comes back to every time when we talk to her on the restorative daily fast, which was almost a year ago in a camp, a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: She says, like, it's about family dynamics and she does the same in May's all, you know, she has some of that thrown in there with bun heads.
[SPEAKER_01]: It always is tethered to the foundation of family dynamics and complications and something that we did not get in Gilmore rolls with sister sister dynamics. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, that's really fascinating. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm extremely fascinated. [SPEAKER_00]: I did not know that had a laugh track.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is feels like so like the absolute emphasis of what Amy would win, which is funny because her roots are in Roseanne. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, her roots are on Roseanne, but like maybe the style that she goes for, like what we know in Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_00]: Like imagine Gilmore Girls having a laugh track.
[SPEAKER_00]: I laugh hard enough, we don't, we don't need to be black trucker. [SPEAKER_00]: It's true. [SPEAKER_00]: So much of it is like her show is like silence and dialogue, is like what Gomarkle says. [SPEAKER_00]: With maizeal, there's a lot more music, but like having a laugh track to it, I have to see this show.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so fascinated by the idea of a laugh track with like a complex family dynamic in a sitcom from an Amy. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this is why I didn't work out. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the style was wrong. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I actually have a little bit of insight on like kind of the dynamics that happened and maybe why it didn't work out.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they cast Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose as the two sisters and Parker Posey's role and Lauren Ambrose neither of them are named Jezebel James. [SPEAKER_01]: Jezebel James is a name of I believe Lauren Ambrose's characters like a imaginary friend that she had when she was a child and [SPEAKER_01]: Parker Poseys character is like a children's book publisher and so I think that she's writing a children's book about Jezbel James and that is something and this was like based on everything I read so I'm so sorry if I'm boxing this if there's a Jezbel James expert out there I'm really really sorry there's a Jezbel James enthusiast please stand up [SPEAKER_01]: Please call us and just let us know and help us.
[SPEAKER_01]: But my understanding is that Parker Poseys character is publishing a book about Jezebel James and that kind of like she and Lauren Ambrose are a bit estranged and that kind of gives her it like softens her a little bit to being like, okay, I'll carry your baby for you. [SPEAKER_00]: That's so fascinating.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I can't imagine, like, this does not sound like a sitcom at all, but it also at the same time absolutely sounds like. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, the only reason that I can hear it is is because I found the promotion, the promo for it, from when it aired. [SPEAKER_01]: And you can hear the laugh track in, like some of this, it is the same snappy dialogue we all know and love.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Parker posi fits perfectly into the mold for it, like a lead role in an 80-sharp one holiday and a drone percent show. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm just I can I can see a fox sitcom in my mind like I'm I'm not much of a like a appointment television broadcast network television sitcom watch. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I can like see it so clearly in my mind when they like walk on a set like [SPEAKER_00]: The applause, like the dramatic entrances, I'm so fast and like I have to see this show.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have to see it. [SPEAKER_00]: I would love to watch this out there. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go find it. [SPEAKER_01]: Pause, gotta go. [SPEAKER_00]: Pause. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so this is what it says. [SPEAKER_00]: Box if you could call us with like screeners of this, please. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would buy a box set.
[SPEAKER_01]: I would buy a box set. [SPEAKER_01]: 100 percent. [SPEAKER_00]: You guys want to make $10? [SPEAKER_01]: Put it online. [SPEAKER_01]: Send me the link. [SPEAKER_01]: Truly, no, put it online. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's as they cast Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose as the two sisters in Fox order the pilot script and offered to produce a series in New York.
[SPEAKER_01]: Fox is executive VP for programming at the time said that they gave Amy the reins because, quote, with Amy, you sign on for her vision. [SPEAKER_01]: So like I love. [SPEAKER_01]: that Amy for at least a brief moment had these people who were like, we believe in you. [SPEAKER_01]: We know that the mortgals like you were the magic behind Gilmourgals and with that comes your vision.
[SPEAKER_01]: It comes your dialogue, the hours you want to put into things. [SPEAKER_01]: The wonders you want to do. [SPEAKER_01]: But then they go on to say that scripts were being turned in at 60 pages for 22-minute episode and Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose are both quoted saying they were like exhausted, but grateful to me and Amy's hands.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like they respected her so much. [SPEAKER_01]: They were like, like, when Amy calls you answer, but Parker Posey was like, I am quite positively broken. [SPEAKER_00]: Stretching. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm remembering that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was like, a quote being like, I am stretched and ripped and shredded and broken, but like it is rewarding because Amy's [SPEAKER_01]: work.
[SPEAKER_01]: When you read it, you're just like, this is so brilliant. [SPEAKER_01]: She is so, so brilliant. [SPEAKER_01]: So as production went on in 2007, they reduced its order of episodes from 13 to 7. [SPEAKER_01]: And this was on the precipice of an anticipated WGA strike, which was very, very famous.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this is coming back to me now. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, maybe we did talk about this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And then instead of an airing it after American Idol, which was the plan, that is the whole reason they need to do this. [SPEAKER_00]: When you said, getting into the American Idol audience, I was like, oh, time-wise.
[SPEAKER_00]: How's it been time-wise? [SPEAKER_00]: Because that doesn't seem, that just seems different. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But they were going to air it after American Idol to like hook people in so smart, except then they didn't follow through on that. [SPEAKER_01]: Fox, then instead of airing it on Tuesday nights after American Idol, you're doing on Friday nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: They wanted it to fail. [SPEAKER_01]: Death sentence. [SPEAKER_01]: I just find that so strange that they were like, yeah, this is the reason why we want the show and we trust you and then something happened. [SPEAKER_01]: And according to the execs at Fox, they said the reason they didn't do that is because sometimes American Idol would go over and they didn't want to cut into its time slot so they put it on Friday nights, but anyway, this goes into production and they wrap right before the writer strike.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the positives of the writer strike is that Dan and Amy are now in New York City, which is a place that feels like home to them. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, they were LA for so long. [SPEAKER_01]: Amy grew up in LA, but she feels like a New Yorker at heart. [SPEAKER_01]: She was born here and the positives were that it introduced them to more New York-based writers, taught them to recognize the building exteriors of the corporations and studios they were striking against, and it helps them better get acquainted with their adopted city.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I really think that despite the fact that we know the end of the story, the show, you know, didn't go on to be successful, this laid a really, really interesting foundation [SPEAKER_01]: them to start production on the Marvelous Mrs. Mazeal. [SPEAKER_01]: So the show, so the return of adjustable James premiered on March 12th, 2008.
[SPEAKER_01]: Two days later, on March 14th, 2008, the New York Times, who had published all of this information about them just 12 days prior on March 2nd, did a review and the article ends with, Ms. Sherman Paladino has brought us up to expect better. [SPEAKER_01]: That was the last sentence of the article.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I read several articles about the return of jazimil james with women, especially who were writing these, who were like, I was so excited about the return of Amy Sherman Paladino after every single thing that happened. [SPEAKER_01]: with Gilmore girls and, unfortunately, someone said it was more fizzled and sizzle and that bums me out and I really do wonder if it's because a lot of them mentioned that the laugh track just didn't feel right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's what I'm, that's what I was going to say is when I was looking up stuff about May's all and like how, like, they're moved to Amazon, how they felt about it, someone asked if they would ever return to network television and she said no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, am I making myself clear?
[SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, she said absolutely not, [SPEAKER_00]: it just goes to show that like after like being on the WB and then being on Fox and then bunheads which was ABC Family I believe that all of those have very similar endings that like it very clear that something was going on between her, the vision, [SPEAKER_00]: for one brief shining moment seemed like that was a budget that all of those kind of end the same with being like with Amy you sign under her vision and then it seems like there's a lot of conversations that take place outside of her vision of people trying to make it work because she said they've been in this business for a long time when we started at broadcast networks you pitch a strong woman character and you see men in the room get very nervous about a strong woman
[SPEAKER_00]: because often they worry that if the woman is strong, she's not going to be likable. [SPEAKER_00]: Now you pitch a Mitch Magesl, there's no nervousness, there's no question about it. [SPEAKER_00]: And she talks about how there was like a difference between pitching it to Amazon, who like they were buying into like the nature of the Palatinos, the vision of the Palatinos.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it seemed like they were actually doing that because they believed in Mitch Magesl. [SPEAKER_00]: versus it seems with Fox, they're buying into Amy because of the audience that she has. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: And not necessarily trusting her vision, because this little story that she's telling about men fearing like a strong woman, it's definitely like a little anecdote from what happened probably summarizing a lot of the experiences that she had, maybe with Jezebel, maybe with bun heads.
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_00]: It seems like that makes a lot of sense that that ended that way. [SPEAKER_00]: All road's lead to streaming is kind of where [SPEAKER_01]: Amy and Dan feel now, which is really fascinating because there's a book I'm going to reference in when we start getting into the conversation about nasal where Stacey Wilson Hunt, who does this interview with them, who was the moderator at Paley Fest last year when we went, she talks to them about, you know, writing for streaming and how different that was, then writing for network television, but talking about how streamers are starting to, and even network television [SPEAKER_01]: Pitched with the show and Amy and Tammy like there is literally like it is that is the most irresponsible move that These studios could make because so much of what we've built on Gilmore on Mazeal was happening as the show was unfolding
[SPEAKER_01]: you're not going to know what's going to happen five seasons, like maybe guess you have an idea, obviously, Amy in the last four words in the lore there and they did have an idea in mind and ending, so to speak, in mind of what happened with Mitch, but they didn't know how they were going to get there.
[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't know what the entire arc of season three was going to look like when Amy pitched the show in 2015, at least every nook and cranny of it, it comes with what the audience wants, it comes with what they think works. [SPEAKER_01]: They had something planned for season two that I can't wait to tell you about the island in this book that was like, that's never going to work.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that it's very interesting to hear them talk about the changes in the industry. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like studios have at least trusted them in some regard to be like, okay, I know you know how to tell a story and I know that you know how to paint the picture.
[SPEAKER_01]: So as long as you give us a good pet, you know you're going to take it in a good direction. [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think they're giving the same agency young writers these days. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I think it's a kind of a case-by-case basis of how that manifests, but I think that with, at least with Amazon, I think that they saw her vision and how well worked for [SPEAKER_00]: what she was able to get and what they didn't more importantly what they didn't give her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: That they took it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like as, of course, we'll get into Meazel, but Amy and Dan got the first ever two season pick up for Amazon. [SPEAKER_00]: They had never done that before with Meazel. [SPEAKER_00]: Like that was a first time. [SPEAKER_00]: It was very rare and it was like, they were Amazon's first.
[SPEAKER_00]: And [SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting that that is the quote from the book, because they talked about that they had like how many seasons do you want? [SPEAKER_00]: May's a little to go on for, and they're like 35. [SPEAKER_00]: We have kind of an idea of what's gonna happen through season four and five, but after that's gonna be whatever where the wind takes us with Mitch.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's interesting that they kind of push back against that five season arc when they kind of had it. [SPEAKER_00]: in mind and maybe they had to. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they knew what it was going to be. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just more over that I do think studios these days are asking creators to pitch them a true like this is what happens in season one.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is what happens in season two, three, four and five. [SPEAKER_00]: That reminds me of your conversation with Sarah Lambert. [SPEAKER_01]: But Sarah knew, we talked about this in Gilmour to Watch, Sarah knew what the opening of season three for Jenny and Georgia was. [SPEAKER_01]: And she said that's what she pitched the show on.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I find that's so interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: Creators do that. [SPEAKER_01]: They pitch their pilot and maybe they'll pitch their finale, but also I don't know I just I do I agree with Amy and Dan that like you're you're chopping off several fantastic ideas that have opportunity to grow and blossom Just because they don't have like a landing point yet or they don't know where they're gonna be in two seasons when they pitch the idea It's got a you have to have some idea But I think that and I think that that's the point they're getting at they're like you have to have some idea But you have to be able to like grow and and [SPEAKER_01]: move with the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't think that Amy knew when she pitched the show of like, you know, two women who are more like best friends than mother and daughter in Connecticut, like that at the end of season four, Rory was going to sleep with her married ex-boyfriend. [SPEAKER_01]: Who know, you don't even mean.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is like that. [SPEAKER_01]: So arguably the best season finale and no one could have predicted that. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I digress. [SPEAKER_01]: I find that really fascinating that they have that retrospect on that given what we learned about the return of Jezebel James because the fate of the return of Jezebel James is that on March 25th after only three episodes that were released, they canceled the show and they did not air the rest of the episodes, which I find to be it great as you shot them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So instead, they were released on Apple iTunes on May 6th, 2008. [SPEAKER_00]: They, like, ran, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run [SPEAKER_00]: So, and the next week is the week when Nika canceled.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, sad. [SPEAKER_01]: Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad. [SPEAKER_01]: Here's what I will say is that, you know, it sounds like Amy in all of her retrospect about these things, these projects that like started and then didn't end up going anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: She has a really thick skin.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's just like, yeah, people weren't into it. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, [SPEAKER_00]: And it happens front facing she definitely does because like there's you got it you got to have something some sort of feeling about it, but like she doesn't let it hold it back No, she doesn't let it hold her back or take or like get her down if this was such an inspiring journey to go on research wise because [SPEAKER_01]: I just look at like what she built with Gilmore Girls, which she has said, she said this at Paylee Fest, she has said this about nasal in other capacities and other interviews that if you're lucky in your life, you'll have one hit under your belly.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if you're lucky and she got two. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just think that that's such a phenomenal way to look at things because this industry can be very volatile and it can be very cutthroat. [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, she's like, I thought Gilmore Girls [SPEAKER_01]: And then she gets this incredible show that just explodes.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get there in a second. [SPEAKER_01]: Not yet. [SPEAKER_01]: So that was in 2008. [SPEAKER_01]: In 2010, there was an article out that someone was doing with Outsmart Magazine about Sam Phillips. [SPEAKER_01]: And it made me want to talk about the music and Gilmore Girls just from Sam Phillips Lens, because I know we talked about it as a whole.
[SPEAKER_01]: In our first year on this podcast that we talked with Grant Lee Phillips last year, I'd love to talk with Sam Phillips, but I'd love to talk about just her and the history of how she became the soundtrack behind. [SPEAKER_01]: Gilmore Girls because it's so iconic and we just watch Partings recently on rewatch club and just seeing her and seeing her play the nostalgia songs.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, taking pictures. [SPEAKER_01]: I just like, I got so missedy eyed because I was like, this is so poetic and beautiful and I just love her contribution to the show. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so her voice really like guides so much of like what feels like Gilmore Girls sound wise. [SPEAKER_00]: You're out and about, like, and I don't know about, and I do mean on the internet, not like, I don't know about in the world.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you're scrolling down on the screen. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I pass the ice cream. [SPEAKER_01]: And a truck age just starts playing the la la. [SPEAKER_00]: And he was just playing the la la. [SPEAKER_00]: What if fun ice cream truck that would be? [SPEAKER_00]: I know that would be quite fun, because usually the ice cream truck comes by this house and it's dear, you're saying low.
[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine the la la is instead of Gilmore girls. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like a small lesson instead. [SPEAKER_00]: That would be so, like, that would just feel so nice. [SPEAKER_00]: But you immediately recognized it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's Gilmore girls. [SPEAKER_00]: You hear Sam Phillips all laws.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, there it is. [SPEAKER_00]: That's Gilmore girls. [SPEAKER_00]: That's Gilmore girls. [SPEAKER_01]: It [SPEAKER_01]: So it made me want to do that article in particular a whole episode kind of diving into that me will, but there was a snippet that was pulled out of there because it was an interview between this uh the interviewer's name is Steven Foster, it was between him and Amy about Sam Phillips and her contribution to Gilmore Girls, but at the end he asks her what she's working on, and this was this was in 2010 and I think January of 2010.
[SPEAKER_01]: She said, well, I just wrote a movie for Sarah Jessica Parker that we're trying to set up. [SPEAKER_01]: It was called the Late Bloomer's Revolution. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a book, and it was supposed to be an adaptation, which she was also supposed to direct. [SPEAKER_01]: But she said the movie industry, woo!
[SPEAKER_01]: That takes a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: That'll suck your soul, Adia. [SPEAKER_00]: And then she said, the late bloomers revolution, I'm right, I don't know why I'm writing this down, is it? [SPEAKER_00]: No, you should because I was actually going to suggest like maybe book club maybe. [SPEAKER_00]: I will have to see because this doesn't seem like it did it go anywhere.
[SPEAKER_01]: It did end. [SPEAKER_01]: It ended up going somewhere else. [SPEAKER_01]: But the other thing she said was I'm writing a pilot for HBO. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just working. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just paying the bills. [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of interesting, but very interesting, and so there wasn't an article on Playable written about the late Bloomberg's Revolution adaptation in 2007 before Jezebel James, but it was eventually sold off to ABC without Amy Sherman Peldino or Sarah Jessica Parker attached.
[SPEAKER_01]: The idea of Amy and Sarah Jessica Parker working together makes my head wanna explode in the best way. [SPEAKER_00]: I know, because that's so hard with adaptations too, because if the rights expire, they go onto someone else, like they can sell them again if you don't want them. [SPEAKER_00]: Like if you don't want to buy them back, like there's so much when it comes to adaptations that it's so difficult.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's like when you hear of like author who's like, oh my gosh, my book has been optioned with this company and like you never see it ever because the rights expired and they didn't do anything with it. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I will be home. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm taking notes on our own episode of things to look up late to look up to expand on for another episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for my own brain for my own brain. [SPEAKER_00]: That's so interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: Either one. [SPEAKER_01]: She wrote a pilot called the Wyoming story for the CW, which was an interesting return to collaborating with them. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was meant to be part of their fall 2010 season.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it ended up becoming a maid for TV movie when the pilot wasn't actually picked up. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't really know anything about it. [SPEAKER_01]: I found a link to it. [SPEAKER_01]: So we should definitely- It's a whole night. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's only an hour long. [SPEAKER_01]: It's listed on Wikipedia and IMDB as a maid for TV movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which, where did it go? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, lifetime? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: Hallmark? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna find it. [SPEAKER_00]: Where, oh, why am I, I'm not, I don't need to take notes. [SPEAKER_00]: You have these notes, but I'm like, I'm, I know what I'm gonna be looking at in the car.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do it a deep dive, I know. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And then she went on to do bun heads, which I was waiting for that one. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh my gosh, there's all these things. [SPEAKER_00]: It's one thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's a whole separate episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, I really think that it would be fun to do an episode about bun heads and a tall. [SPEAKER_01]: And because they both got one season, bun heads ran from June, she doesn't [SPEAKER_01]: and it wasn't picked up for a second season, which was really a bummer, but I didn't get into the weeds on that, because I was like, I really want to just get us to, I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't have a ton of interest in watching bun heads, and I think it's because I know it's an ABC family show, and I don't know, maybe I would really love it. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I have a hard time diving into new shows. [SPEAKER_00]: I have to like, as to hit me. [SPEAKER_00]: It has to find me.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has to tell me it's the right time, and it hasn't told me that yet. [SPEAKER_01]: That's okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that it'll be really fun to do almost like a dive on the dance world that equates. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I like the idea of visiting those shows because I haven't watched all of it while I watched the first episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't seen any of it. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Really, you didn't even watch the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: I haven't seen any of either of these shows. [SPEAKER_01]: So, wow. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's, I watched the pilot of a 12, I watched, this was before it got canceled.
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought I had time. [SPEAKER_01]: You know what, I mean, I guess I still do. [SPEAKER_01]: The whole season is up. [SPEAKER_01]: But I just mean like, I thought I had time to kind of like, you know, meet these characters and like wrap myself up in them. [SPEAKER_01]: So I was excited about getting more into that and then unfortunately got canceled.
[SPEAKER_01]: But with bun heads, I actually watched, [SPEAKER_01]: The first couple episodes when I was still living with my grandma during the pandemic, kind of in that in between. [SPEAKER_01]: And I fell off of it. [SPEAKER_01]: But I wasn't watching it from the angle of like, how you and I are doing this with maizeal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I wonder if there would be a little more enjoyment there in the sense that like we're looking for Gilmoreisms. [SPEAKER_01]: We're looking for things that feel like Gilmore balls. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And of course, you know, Kelly Bishop is in the show, Alex Borstein makes an appearance in the first episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: it too, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I think there are a lot of Gilmore, like, of the Paladino pals that make appearances in Bunhead. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and in a twall, definitely in maizeal. [SPEAKER_01]: So, it'll be really fun to kind of revisit from that standpoint. [SPEAKER_01]: And when we're ready, we'll do it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I didn't think that it was necessary to dive into Bunhead, I think that's a whole different episode, because despite the fact that, as I said at the beginning of this episode, it wasn't one of Amy's major major shows in the way that [SPEAKER_01]: It is something that she is known for and it is something that had a whole season of life in it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I people love bun heads. [SPEAKER_00]: I heard a lot of bun heads love. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of lore there. [SPEAKER_00]: Whenever we mention or like at least I mentioned that I've never seen bun heads, there's like a a gas amongst our besties. [SPEAKER_00]: They're like you haven't seen this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love this. [SPEAKER_00]: Or like you haven't seen this. [SPEAKER_00]: I love to hate it. [SPEAKER_00]: Either one that I think a lot of people have watched it. [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe we'll have a little paladin opal series of run our Patreon and make our way through them, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: So I didn't find a lot of information about Amy from 2013 to 2015 when they do the ATX reunion, but the ATX reunion in 2015 brought up [SPEAKER_01]: the resurgence of Gilmore Girls, it brought up the possibility of a revival.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I was kind of looking for the origin threads of maizeal when I was looking at this book that I got, gorgeous book. [SPEAKER_01]: It's called the Magnificent Magical Marvelous Mrs. Maizeal, the authorized companion to the making of the iconic series. [SPEAKER_00]: authorized companion, that's what made me go, oh, but if you're in YouTube, you can see it, it's quite.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a nice little coffee table book that's actually worth its weight. [SPEAKER_01]: It's beautiful when I went into Barnes and Noble and I got it. [SPEAKER_01]: I was expecting it to be like, a hardcover book, but something smaller. [SPEAKER_01]: And then they pulled this out and I was like, oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's great because I love it. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot in here that I couldn't share with you today. [SPEAKER_01]: I bought this thinking and I won't because I have been threatened with being fired. [SPEAKER_01]: As he should, okay, we all agree, but I'm very excited to talk to you about things that I did learn in here about the, maybe not the inception of Mitch, but the early stages of how the marvellous nasal came to be.
[SPEAKER_00]: I will say I did find that she had written script four nasal before Netflix approached her about. [SPEAKER_00]: She basically said like Netflix was like, here's some money, come do them or girls again, and she's like, great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and she already had the marvellous [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so per the interview that Stacey did with Amy and Dan at the beginning of this book.
[SPEAKER_01]: It says, rather than doing, Amy says, rather than doing a series about my father, I decided a girl comic would be more interesting given that the show was taking place in the late 50s, so the idea of Mrs. Maysall started there. [SPEAKER_01]: I had a general meeting at Amazon Studios in 2015, which had been open like a week and a half or something.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were still very young making TV. [SPEAKER_01]: At that point, Amazon was still telling creators, shoot a pilot will put it online and everyone can vote on it. [SPEAKER_01]: While I did it again, just blurred it out as per the moment, half baked idea just like I did with Gilmore Girls.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I love that, it was in every sort of like, she has maizeal like this is like launching it was most of the articles were around the time that the pilot like had been aired. [SPEAKER_00]: This was like when the rest of the season was coming out that it seemed like she was giving it the same lore that Gilmore girls had and I was like, no, that's so fascinating that it's like, always in the back of her mind she said she was like shooting the shit with the Amazon execs, yeah, like here's this thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what I find really fascinating about the idea of like rather than writing something about her dad, at this point, like between Gilmore and Maisel, her dad passed. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he passed it in 2012. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I find it that very interesting that she went from that feeling and wanted to move towards something that maybe made her feel closer to her dad that brought up feelings of like what he introduced through to when she was younger, because Dan and her were talking about how so much of what inspired it were the comics that were coming up around her dad in the 50s.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I was like, oh, that's so, like, that's so sweet. [SPEAKER_01]: And she mentioned some of them in the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she even built a whole character out of one of them. [SPEAKER_01]: So then Dan goes on to say Amy wrote the maizeal pilot in late 2015 around when Netflix reenlet the Gilmore reboot.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you guys listened to the episode on Thursday and you listened to the full episode that we released on Patreon on Friday, I found this pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was wondering what iteration this was of [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it was at least one of the early ones if not the first, because that I was able to find online it was a two it was like a November of 2015 draft and so if that was like her first true draft or at least her first polished draft of nasal that's so massively impressive because most of it ended up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's almost exactly, though, you'll find out more about it if you listen to this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's true through it. [SPEAKER_01]: Amy asked Amazon to put me on hold while we did the other show and they were nice enough to say yes, which leads me to believe that Amazon produced that pilot.
[SPEAKER_01]: This was not a situation, because I think I talked about this on Thursday that exactly what Amy had said, Prime Studios was new. [SPEAKER_01]: I think the only show they had was transparent. [SPEAKER_01]: Was it? [SPEAKER_01]: What about Fleabag? [SPEAKER_00]: When did Fleabag come on the scene?
[SPEAKER_00]: Fleabag came out, I believe, 2018. [SPEAKER_00]: Moots are in the jungle. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, about that, the orchestra people. [SPEAKER_01]: But it was a situation because I remember at the time working with my friend M, who ended up producing my pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: She also tried wanting to do the same thing where she was like, yeah, you know, I can this pilot that I just produced I can put it on the Amazon if people vote for it Amazon could look at it and say I want to produce this and that happened with a lot of series that ended up on Amazon Prime but this one I believe was produced.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, judging from like the meeting that she had, the fact that they wanted her to produce it. [SPEAKER_01]: The fact that she was like, hey, can we hold on on this while I go to Gilmore. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're like, sure. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, they had a model for it. [SPEAKER_00]: It seemed like they were following the model, but producing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also given the quality of it, I'm saying this is not an Amy Sherman Paladino putting her life savings in there. [SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely produced. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this was an Amazon. [SPEAKER_01]: So Dan goes on to say we were finishing post on Gilmore Girls and in pre-production for me is a lot at the same time, which I think is so cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: Crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: I love the idea that like while they were, you know, out in the world, making Gilmore Girls reboot all the while they had this little idea, brewing and brim in and they're like in pre-production, getting ready to give us the next hit series. [SPEAKER_01]: It's special.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which then makes me wonder, like because we know we talk about it on Thursday that Bailey [SPEAKER_00]: as you will soon discover that if she found her from Gilmore Girls or if she was cast as emigene and she pulled her for Netflix, what came first for Bailey Diang? [SPEAKER_01]: Well, bunheads came first for Bailey Diang.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was one of the ladies and bunheads. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, yeah, I wonder if she had her in mind to play imaging or if like she saw her and the revival and I was like come on over I don't know we're going to New York Time travel daily. [SPEAKER_01]: I truly don't know Because it might have been a situation where she was like, hey, I know I brought you in for this Gilmore girl thing, but like we're doing another series and I have you in mind [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, because she's so perfect.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's so cute. [SPEAKER_00]: I love her. [SPEAKER_01]: Her big disillusion, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: So, per Wikipedia, in June of 2016, Amazon ordered the hour-long pilot of the Marvelous Mrs. Maysall, which makes sense, which was made available to watch on Amazon on March 17, 2017. [SPEAKER_01]: March 16th.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything I said said it came out on March 16th. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really? [SPEAKER_00]: All of the articles said March 16th, but then I went on [SPEAKER_00]: Wikipedia and it says March 17th. [SPEAKER_00]: Huh, and I couldn't figure it out. [SPEAKER_00]: Which one it word? [SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's somewhere around the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's March 6th, 17th. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 7. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll tell you something. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, don't do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I just felt like an elderly. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, let's move it right along, my friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was part of the reason why we chose this week to build up to Mazzle is because it's the 9th anniversary. [SPEAKER_01]: Next year we'll be the 10th, which is around when we'll be wrapping up the series, which is crazy to think that like this was all happening 10 years ago. [SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Whoo! [SPEAKER_01]: Wild! [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, whether it was the 16th or the 17th, it was released and available just the pilot to watch. [SPEAKER_01]: on Amazon, as a part of Amazon Studio spring pilot season with viewers having the option to vote for it to be order to series and I find that really interesting and I want to know more about that.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very hungry game. [SPEAKER_01]: It feels dystopian for some reason. [SPEAKER_01]: But it wasn't very long after on April 10, 2017, it was announced that the marvelous Mrs. Mayzel had received an unprecedented two season order from Amazon. [SPEAKER_01]: which to be fair, they were still very new.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I wonder if the reception they got from the pilot had bearing on that because in an article and I want to say I read this in New York Times article, but I'm sorry from this quoting, Amazon signed them to an overall deal in September of 2017. [SPEAKER_01]: After years of having networks and studios interfere with their past shows, Miss Sherman Paladino described the relief of landing at Amazon.
[SPEAKER_01]: They trust us, she said, adding a profane intensifier. [SPEAKER_01]: Miss Sherman Paladino adds a lot of profane intensifiers, don't we know it? [SPEAKER_01]: Which feels right for her, but I think that I meant to write this down, but someone who was an executive at Amazon was basically like, we saw this and we knew immediately a need to two seasons.
[SPEAKER_01]: We saw the richness of Mitch Mazzle and the world that Amy had built in just this pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: And I talk about this on Thursday and I talk about this in the entirety of our episode on Friday. [SPEAKER_01]: It is so this is such an incredible pilot and in the first six minutes, you know exactly who this woman is and you know exactly what world Amy has built.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is so hard to do and that is what makes Amy a brilliant storyteller. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think the episode as a whole is such a good sell on where this is going because like if you've seen it or if you haven't seen it, it's really like a setting the status quo breaking the status quo, it's setting it so well up for where it's going.
[SPEAKER_00]: without you having any idea what's about to happen. [SPEAKER_00]: Like there's just this anticipation of how many people are going to be affected by this. [SPEAKER_00]: Like who in her life is going to have like positive feedback versus who's going to be against it. [SPEAKER_00]: And you characters are going to meet like you immediately know that we're in for a wild ride with this woman.
[SPEAKER_00]: it feels so wild that like if Amazon watch this and they were like hmm we'll see we'll see how this goes like it's so clear that like this is this is going places whatever happened behind the scenes in this deal everyone seemed to come from it very happily especially signing an overall deal which means that they can like exclusively produce things for Amazon and [SPEAKER_00]: in it, they had their Gilmar cloths.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's always a Gilmar cloths in it that they said that they could go back to this. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a Gilmar cloths for them. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a Gilmar cloths for Lauren. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: We will go back to this if it's like, overall dealments, they can only produce things for Amazon, is basically what this being said.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're which is like really good place to be in. [SPEAKER_00]: But that's why the Gilmar, the Gilmar cloths will let them go back to Netflix for one thing and one thing only, which they said that they were really at the time, really excited to just dive into the 50s and just be there. [SPEAKER_00]: Which is quite fun, but I find it interesting that in 2017 they got an overall deal It was renewed in 2019 and not just come out of it since then.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, of course, they had a 12, but I find it so interesting that [SPEAKER_00]: It was announced and you said April like after this came out in March that by November they had an entire series produced finished everything like had they started on it prior to that like did they see it in March and they didn't wait for the reception of it they were like go [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know when I couldn't find anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have so many questions out of it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like did she have this series written? [SPEAKER_00]: Did she know what she was going with it? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, because just the fact that they binge dropped it, meaning they like dropped it all in one day, is so fascinating that it only took them that long to get through seven more episodes.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, Amy came from doing 22 episodes. [SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say, it doesn't shock me. [SPEAKER_01]: Seven more episodes because the first season is only eight. [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't shock me, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But no, I would be surprised if she had an anticipation built at least a handful of episodes out ready to [SPEAKER_01]: You know, take to task and film.
[SPEAKER_00]: If it seems quite difficult to fall until world, write one thing for it and then step out of it and not have any more thoughts towards it, like you just kind of seem like you would straddle that world between you and your regular life that like constantly kind of like snowballing about what could happen there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I imagine what she put pinned to page because am I making it up that her and Dan wrote all of the episodes of season one? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you're making that up. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, great. [SPEAKER_01]: I lied to you. [SPEAKER_00]: We of course, oh my gosh, yes, you want it for correct.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was making it up because Miss Sheila Oh my god, how could I forget our darling princess Sheila Lawrence. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and Scott Ellis directed the episode that Sheila wrote So but the rest of it was what number episode did she write? [SPEAKER_01]: Do you want me to tell you what the name of it is?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's episode six [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, still lightful. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: But yes, for the most part, it was in Amy and Dan's hands on both the directorial level and a writing level. [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, we have to bring Sheila back. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I know we have to get Sheila back on to talk about this.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be so fascinated to hear. [SPEAKER_01]: I know I adore her. [SPEAKER_01]: She's the best. [SPEAKER_01]: So the thing is, is that beyond this, I had a really difficult time wanting to share a lot of what was said about the inception of like, producing the first season and alike, because I don't want to spoil anything for you and have also been put under strict guidelines that I cannot.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I would love to do more of like a retrospect, maybe after we finish these ones, season two, it's a tra like what bits and pieces of information were in this book in these articles [SPEAKER_00]: I would love to watch it after we finish. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because there's so much that like I was avoiding but like wanted to get into the lore of and more about how she decided to bring in Gilmore characters because honestly, if I'm Amazon thinking about producing a series with Amy, [SPEAKER_00]: knowing how popular even at that time Gilmore was getting to know that she could bring these people in and get people excited because like when my low came in and Kelly bish up and like all these characters, I know very vaguely from what you and other people have shared that they're not big parts.
[SPEAKER_00]: but there enough to draw the eyes to the show. [SPEAKER_01]: So like, I feel like new at that point what people wanted and they love working with these people. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're not going to bring someone back to the day they don't enjoy working with, but at the same time, it's like, they know what they want.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It is quite funny for them to say that that's the first multi-season pickup for this studio that is five minutes old, but it's fun, regardless, absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: I also want to note that Deadline wrote an article of measles inception and the honestly surprising Emmy sweep it had in its first year because Dan and Amy, there's an article where they're like, yeah, they had us like way in the back of the writers.
[SPEAKER_01]: We were like back there with the dinner rolls and then they called the marvelous Mrs. Maisel and everyone turned it to and looked at us and was like, the miss measle who? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, yeah, no one understood that this show was about to like, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have like, it takes five minutes. [SPEAKER_00]: They have to cut to commercial break. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Because their quality knows to get to the stage because they're so far back. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: But excuse me. [SPEAKER_00]: I bought her in family.
[SPEAKER_01]: Deadline says when the Amazon produced Mrs. Mayzel came into being, it was as if the Sherman Paladino vision had finally been matched with a studio that could offer the pair of the resources to make the show that they envisioned. [SPEAKER_01]: which makes it's 20 nominations proof that staying true to their vision was worth the weight in the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is because I think this deadline article in general was about the fact that like Amy had come to like toe to toe with a lot of these studio execs that she worked with in the past. [SPEAKER_01]: And that wording goes perfectly. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was basically her saying, like, no, I'm not sacrificing or compromising the vision I have for the show, just because you don't want to put up the money for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the, this is what we, this is what we have in mind, not in like a petulant way, but in a way that's, [SPEAKER_01]: Like I need to remain true to the creative vision of my show and it doesn't sound like you're able to offer that to me And it also sounded like especially with the WB and and with this being Amy's first show and everything She has said about it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lauren has said other people have said about the production of Gilmore girls that They like didn't trust her in the same way that Amazon ended up. [SPEAKER_01]: They were like, yeah, Valvesting her [SPEAKER_00]: her vision was which last look at it look at him now baby look at him now baby the end of that quote that I was reading earlier about like there's no nervousness There's no question about it with me with mid mails trying to put her name together major She said that's actually a pretty big sea change.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's fantastic that that's happening That's the result of having so many outlets that there's a less uniform business model sort of guiding everybody in their choices Because that's how you end up with the same cop show the same medical show over and over and over and over again [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I was thinking about that the other day and I saw some new medical show coming out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, another one, please, like, oh my gosh, I love a medical show as much as an ex-person, but like, only if I know, like, feels like it's like different or needs to be, like, seen, because like, some of them, I'm like, oh my gosh, again, another, you know, so I invite you. [SPEAKER_00]: I do understand that and I do appreciate that that she is seeing that and she feels seen in that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Something that was quite funny because in 2017, that's when they got their overall deal. [SPEAKER_00]: It was renewed in 2019. [SPEAKER_00]: and I loved the quote, the Amy and Dan said about it, which was the team Amazon has allowed us to have Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy as our president for the next few years and for that we are eternally grateful because at the time that was very recently after Donald Trump had been nominated, or sorry.
[SPEAKER_00]: had been elected president. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I love that there's was that the way Eisenhower and John of Kennedy get to be the president for the next few years in our world, Amazon is a future of television and we're thrilled to tag along for the ride. [SPEAKER_00]: So it seemed like a mutual adoration fest between Amy and Dan and Amazon, which is quite interesting going forward to [SPEAKER_00]: A 12 was also quite unique in the fact that they ordered two seasons before anything aired.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were not doing their model anymore of having the pilot seeing how it dies and then ordering the rest of the season, they ordered two seasons immediately. [SPEAKER_00]: dropped it all in one day, gave it six weeks and canceled season two, which is insane, but behind the scenes there was a lot of change happening at Amazon Prime video in terms of leadership, the person who had given them their overall deal had left and someone knew had just started.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the specifics of like the people who it was, but I know there was a lot of [SPEAKER_00]: internal political shifting between roles and it seemed like maybe they weren't going to give it the chance that it needed, which is insane to me to drop a show, like a binge drop, drop it all in one day, give people six weeks to find it, and then cancel it, like, what?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's that's wanting a show to fail in my opinion. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that goes hand in hand with what Amy and Dan were commenting on when it comes to like the new regime of the method for selling your show is they hold hands because it's not just about the pitch and it's not just about the casting and it's not just about the production level.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is also about the audience and if you don't give an audience time to [SPEAKER_01]: fall in love with a show with a series with characters, every show is going to be done after season one. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what these studios are doing nowadays is that they're like cutting them off of the ankles, being like, alright, well, sorry, that didn't work.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, what? [SPEAKER_01]: We've talked about this before that if Gilmore Girls aired today, and Amy has even said this herself, she said it at paleo fashion. [SPEAKER_01]: She said if Gilmore Girls had aired today, it would have been done after season one. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it would have been done after the pilot.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think they would have gotten it and been like, okay, that's for sure. [SPEAKER_01]: Too slow. [SPEAKER_01]: to this, to that, and it's just like, it bumps me out that every time Amy tries to do a dance show, the door kind of gets close to her face after the one season without allowing the audience to really fall for these characters.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there were things that I could say about a 12 and I will famously, I like to talk. [SPEAKER_01]: There are things I could say, and I will. [SPEAKER_01]: And I will. [SPEAKER_01]: But you know, I do feel like the general sentiment, especially when you have a brilliant duo in Amy and Dan, so much so that Amazon saw their brilliance and gave them an overall deal, you have to let them see it through.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or you have to give them the chance to thrive in the way that like shows are happening, because as irritated as I have been lately, that some of my favorite shows are dropping week to week. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, of course, I have to wait for my Thursdays when like the pit comes out, love story, John F. Kennedy, Jr., and Karen, set comes out on Thursdays.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, what am I doing in the meantime, obsessing over it, telling other people to watch it? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, like, craving that moment when I can like watch it, because I like, I think I had like three episodes [SPEAKER_00]: love story and then when i got to the end i was like oh my god i have to wait till next week and what have i done in the meantime told you about it like every single day we've talked about it and so i think it gives that like in the way that we used to like i feel like streamers kind of catered to that binge ability of like oh let them watch it all in one day and then tell everyone about it [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like more often than not, I'm watching something on one day and then completely forgetting about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was trying to tell you the plot to the night agent the other day and I was like, right, he's in a room and then things happen and then at the end of it, other things happen. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I couldn't remember. [SPEAKER_00]: Meanwhile, I'm like remembering every single detail telling everyone about it because I'm obsessed with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And like do I like that I have to wait? [SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: Of course not. [SPEAKER_00]: We love immediate gratification. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but it feels like there's this moment that I'm having with everyone else. [SPEAKER_00]: Like week two, I'm texting my friends, talking about Polly Anthony Kelly and like how amazing he is.
[SPEAKER_00]: It does first role and no one got the chance to do that with a 12. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I think that people would have, I think that if you had given them one episode, people would have been like, oh my gosh, should you see that in the in me show? [SPEAKER_00]: There's a new episode next week and like given that like chance to grow in the way that people feel like, I don't know, I feel like television is going back towards the point of television because it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: a moment that we all get to be a part of and like wait yet for like it's gotten me into like I listen to the pit podcast the Bridgetten podcast like I'm invested week to week hearing what other people have to say like I was watching Bridgetten and all I wanted to do is have a Bridgetten podcast to talk about it totally and so I think that [SPEAKER_00]: by not allowing it that like space to build buys, I think they, I think the 12th was DOA.
[SPEAKER_01]: I totally agree with you. [SPEAKER_01]: And I've been having a lot of these conversations by friend M, who I referenced earlier. [SPEAKER_01]: She's taught me a lot about the industry. [SPEAKER_01]: She's in the industry and like I wouldn't have known about the Amazon pilot testing program 10 years ago without her.
[SPEAKER_01]: She really had her finger on the pulse of a lot of things, especially for independent writers and creators and producers. [SPEAKER_01]: we've been talking about this for the last several months that we are moving in the direction back towards appointment television and she was like, I'm so frustrated because like it wasn't broken to begin with.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it was broken for me. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, there are a lot of people I am the same way. [SPEAKER_01]: I love the immediate gratification of something. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that bingeable TV of shows that I've watched before, like Gilmore Girls, is available to me inaccessible to me whenever I want to watch it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then when you give me something new, I'm going to want something similar, I'm going to watch it in a similar way. [SPEAKER_01]: I love it. [SPEAKER_01]: I can binge a season of anything in one night. [SPEAKER_00]: I will say I think that we were moving in that direction, and that moving out of it now is just a reflection of how we want to kind of go back to the way things were.
[SPEAKER_00]: We need to get it right. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't broken, but we needed a break from it. [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, great point of view. [SPEAKER_01]: We needed a break from it. [SPEAKER_01]: I totally agree. [SPEAKER_01]: I think now we're just overwhelmed by so many options.
[SPEAKER_01]: The people are a gravitating back towards the shows that are familiar. [SPEAKER_01]: They know and love. [SPEAKER_01]: et cetera, but also they want to be given the opportunity to like fall in love with something. [SPEAKER_01]: Like we have a show not every single night, but we have like a appointment television in that regard regardless of whether it's on cable or streaming me and Brett because like Wednesday night, we just started watching Survivor.
[SPEAKER_01]: So like Wednesday's Survivor airs. [SPEAKER_01]: It was three months of your stay. [SPEAKER_00]: That reminds me of being a teenager. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because it's like Gilmore Girls was Tuesday. [SPEAKER_00]: Great. [SPEAKER_00]: It's an out-of-muse Thursday, and I never broke with that Like I always knew that I had like planning homework around this and now Thursdays is the pit and love story And it's like I know that I'm gonna watch love story on Friday because I want to like, you know dive deeper into it, but the pit I need to watch it right now because like they left me on the last hour last week And I have to watch it right now, and I listen to the podcast afterwards like that's my little routine
[SPEAKER_01]: I also love that as two podcasters. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so great to have like, okay, we've watched it episode and then we listen to a podcast about it. [SPEAKER_01]: We chat with our girls about it because like that's what should be you should be cheating a week in between. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not a whole week, but you should be waiting sometime in between to like, save or get excited about it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, maybe watch it again. [SPEAKER_01]: Think about moments you didn't think about before. [SPEAKER_01]: And if you're watching it too fast, [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to miss stuff and it's so funny because like I always make fun of Brett for not being able to like binge a show and I am notoriously a banger But he's not wrong and don't ever ever ever play that for him because he will run with it.
[SPEAKER_01]: He is right [SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna play it at your center. [SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna all loop, but that is what I'm gonna walk down that too. [SPEAKER_00]: He's right. [SPEAKER_00]: He's right. [SPEAKER_00]: He's right. [SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna be like, say it again. [SPEAKER_00]: Say it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luckily he doesn't listen. [SPEAKER_00]: Nancy will have it. [SPEAKER_01]: She'll keep her secret. [SPEAKER_01]: She'll keep her secret. [SPEAKER_01]: Nancy won't keep her secret. [SPEAKER_01]: She's a girl's girl for sure. [SPEAKER_01]: I, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I teeter I straddle between the two because I love to binge watch a show, especially something that's gonna keep me riveted, but I am with you that we are moving back in that direction.
[SPEAKER_01]: And as someone who wants to write for serial television and in a serial medium, I love it. [SPEAKER_00]: But I will say bringing it back to Amy and the studios of it all. [SPEAKER_00]: She was announced recently as is adopting a book. [SPEAKER_00]: It's called The Griffin Sisters Greatest Hits.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is universal. [SPEAKER_00]: So I will say I do think that maybe the Amazon overall deal has shifted or maybe this is something. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe a twall kind of like and did it. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where we're at in terms of that. [SPEAKER_00]: I did try to find out.
[SPEAKER_00]: But [SPEAKER_00]: The last update on that was in 2019. [SPEAKER_00]: Mazeal ended in 2023. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: And so then of course it was in 2025. [SPEAKER_00]: Five last year was asked and the next thing that she's going to do is adapt the book. [SPEAKER_00]: by Jennifer Winner, I think, is how you say her last name, and they're very excited.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a sister's dynamic. [SPEAKER_00]: So, very, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the Crack at a sister's dynamic, I love it. [SPEAKER_00]: Another Crack at a sister's dynamic. [SPEAKER_00]: But I think what's interesting that, as we were talking about all of this, she loves to put the titular character into the title.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like she likes to really show it up, Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess Jezbo-Jane might thought that Jezbo-Jane's was the title character, but maybe it's only her successful shows. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, I will say that like, I was thinking about this last night as I was prepping for this episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: She isn't a literate of girl. [SPEAKER_01]: To the more girls, the return of Jezbo-Jane's, the marvelous Mrs. Meisel. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, bun heads in a 12, we're just one work. [SPEAKER_01]: But head, it's 12. [SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like it unless it has the character. [SPEAKER_00]: Unless it has the character's name as the title, maybe it's not gonna do so well.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited, whatever she has to do. [SPEAKER_00]: And of course, Eloise. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we can't talk about that. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I am very skeptical of that one because Ryan Reynolds, yeah, we didn't even have to say it. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't really know what's happening down there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's not that I don't like him, but it's just like, do people still like him? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm very hesitant because I just don't think that his humor aligns with hers or with Eloise, tonally, but I can be proven wrong guilty until proven innocent.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's always, you know, this is not a fair trial that I'm giving this one. [SPEAKER_00]: unfortunately. [SPEAKER_00]: But I am very excited for the Griffin sisters' greatest hits. [SPEAKER_00]: I definitely want to read it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it would be a fun read with the book club and then maybe this could be like a Gilmour to Read Gilmour to Watch Situation where we come together, read the book, watch the movie, talk about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that can be quite fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Very fun. [SPEAKER_00]: But we'll have to see. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we can get Jennifer on the pod. [SPEAKER_00]: have her talk about her book. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but this is just announced that this is happening, so this is not like a very recent this could take this could take years to get to because she's just acquired the rights to not only write, but also direct.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, huge. [SPEAKER_00]: And if I was seen of her, I would be beside myself, beside [SPEAKER_00]: myself. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I was thinking about that in terms of like writing, like, if Jennifer, I don't know how she feels about Gilmore Girls, so she's a big fan, or if it's kind of like a nebulous sort of thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, of course, she's a fan. [SPEAKER_00]: She's excited for Amy to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I was thinking that in terms of myself of like, if I wrote a book, well, I did. [SPEAKER_00]: But like, if like, if my book that will be published was then optioned to be written and directed in adaptation by Amy.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I would pass away, like I first of all, cause of death, but I don't know how I would feel about her taking it and like how I would feel about it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I would immediately hate it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think my body would fully reject it. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I could handle it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I could handle someone who's writing. [SPEAKER_00]: I love so much, taking on mine. [SPEAKER_00]: Because of course, it would change because it's book to TV, book to film is so different on the screen. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I couldn't do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I could handle it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I would reject it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I would tell my agent no. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm pretty sure they would. [SPEAKER_00]: Kick me out, let me go, you know, put you in a white room, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sign my name without my consent, like that sort of thing that I'd like to pick.
[SPEAKER_01]: I understand the trepidation around that because, you know, fear is what it's called. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I, I don't know, I don't know, but like if push came to shove, shove me, push me. [SPEAKER_00]: I was gonna say, all shove you, but all that to say is like I'm really excited for that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But again, the girls are in the title, the Griffin sisters are in the title. [SPEAKER_00]: So, all roads lead to this is going to be really good. [SPEAKER_01]: I have a lot of high hopes. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be watching. [SPEAKER_01]: It'll be really great. [SPEAKER_01]: I haven't seen an Amy movie yet and I think it's interesting that she's going in to film and not a serial project.
[SPEAKER_01]: But yes, so we'll see, but we are going in to her serial series. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we are going to be diving right on in. [SPEAKER_01]: to make us all. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to leave you and our besties with this quote, I love leaving on a quote. [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much. [SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: There is this article from the new statesman and [SPEAKER_01]: It was an outlet that I had never heard of, but this is where she talks about people being born evil. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: But she says, we don't see mazes a show about stand-up comedy. [SPEAKER_01]: It's really about family, which is just so Amy.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really about family, and it's about how one person's decision to suddenly pursue a different direction can explode everyone's very structured world. [SPEAKER_01]: Sherman Paladino's work is littered with confident, fast-talking, witty women, struggling to deal with the immense amount of pressure they put on themselves, whether that's worries, academic conscientiousness, lore lies decision to raise a child totally alone, or midges all consuming perfectionism.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not, quote, Amy says, it's not so much perfectionism. [SPEAKER_01]: It's dealing with the expectations, especially of the times. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just think that that's so perfectly encapsulates why Gilmore Girls and Mazeal Hold Hands, like of May of Amy's series, whether it's, you know, Jezewell James, Buntheads, whatever.
[SPEAKER_01]: These two, I think, hold hands in a way that we're like the two main characters have a lot in common, and yet are the complete antithesis of one another. [SPEAKER_01]: But the humor, the comedy, the stories, the richness of the world remains. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is why this show, [SPEAKER_01]: is so, so good.
[SPEAKER_01]: And why I think Gilmore girls fans, if they don't already love it, would love it if they haven't watched it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, can I read to you what she said about the pilot of [SPEAKER_00]: Meizel and immediately I was like, Gilmour Girls, from the ask, because she said, for the pilot, I knew who this girl was.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't want someone who was looking out the window thinking, what if there's something over the bend? [SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to deal with someone who actually really loved her life, really think she won, and then it fell apart. [SPEAKER_00]: The story that interests me is the pull between the safe, comfortable life, which sounds pretty wonderful to her still, and this suddenly awakens sort of super power in her.
[SPEAKER_00]: And while it's not exactly, you know, of course, Gilmore Girls, it's just showing so cleanly that Amy has a core story of like finding a woman at like, you know, in terms of image, it's like she loved her life and everything that happened and it fell apart and she had to find something new.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas Laura Lye also really loved her life when we meet her and she kind of has to undo [SPEAKER_00]: the walls that she's put up and break them down in order to continue serving the life of her daughter. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that there's a lot of similarities between the shows just even in the pilot that I think gummorgall's fans.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys have not watched Mazel, just try the first one with us, like just just just the one, just give us the first episode of the Marvelous Mrs. Mazel. [SPEAKER_00]: come in this journey with us because I am so excited. [SPEAKER_00]: It's first going to be spoiler free because Tara has been threatened with her career, it's at stake my career.
[SPEAKER_00]: I actually don't know what's going to happen if you spoil something, like they will have to find out when the first time it happens because it hasn't happened all spoilers that have happened have come from me finding them out or which like people's favorite thing to do. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, I've never seen the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm starting to watch it. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, you know what I love in season three when they poison all the characters and all the size. [SPEAKER_00]: And then one of them is left standing and she goes and does a comedy set. [SPEAKER_00]: You're like... [SPEAKER_00]: I've never seen it, but they're like, oh, oh my gosh, you should watch it you should watch it It's really good, but thus far no one's been poisoned on nasal so still plenty of time still five more seasons to watch But let's redo hope that you will come along with us because I think that if you like emigros [SPEAKER_00]: you will like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you've seen Measel, I think that you will like watching it with us because we can only get five sentences and to any conversation without bringing up gun mortgals and having the paladinoisms in this, like, which there are already so many in the pilot, so many. [SPEAKER_01]: So like, and this moment is when, yeah, or like, does this, and this moment is when Lane does that, and it's great.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's really good. [SPEAKER_00]: And there's actors that appear even in the first episode from Gamma Girls that I shouted about in my view. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, alone was so excited. [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that even if you've seen it and you want to kind of get the Paladinoism, the Amyism, the Gamma Orisms of it all, come join us on Patreon, join us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Join us. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, to cool tip and view Gamma Girls. [SPEAKER_01]: It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling in a way that is just different from Gilmore girls, but I think is well matched to that. [SPEAKER_01]: Not to put them up against each other at all times, but and it's not putting them up against each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't I don't ever want it to be like a thing of like we're comparing them because we are or like judging which is better. [SPEAKER_00]: It's more of just like Amy has like this wheelhouse of [SPEAKER_00]: stories it seems to come from her that she injects into both series, which I'm excited about.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she's a little self-referential, which I think it's fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I agree. [SPEAKER_01]: So you guys will be getting a preview of episode one on Thursday the first hour of it We have a silly ghost time and then if you want to join us on Patreon for super cool party people and vicious trowelups You will get episode one on Friday [SPEAKER_00]: and an episode every week.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot easier to like join into the commentary with the comments there like that's a lot more. [SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, the interface is a lot easier to like immediately comment back on that. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're one of those people yelling in your car, go yell on YouTube and people.
