[SPEAKER_02]: 5, 6, 7, 8, Troopador. [SPEAKER_03]: Hi everybody, welcome back to Gilmore to say with Tara and Haley. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm Tara, this is Haley. [SPEAKER_03]: Hi, Haley. [SPEAKER_03]: Hi, Tara. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you looked so excited to do that. [SPEAKER_03]: To give a little clean way. [SPEAKER_03]: No, you may.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I said when we were watching our last episode of Gilmore revisited when I was announcing like the library cap to our vicious trollebs. [SPEAKER_02]: I said, the eagle is flying for the last time, which felt if you know, you know, yeah, from Princess Diaries. [SPEAKER_02]: But I just felt like I was doing like a Julian Andrews.
[SPEAKER_02]: a little queen wave, a little Abigail Breslin. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, as Kelly Clarkson, please. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, a break away. [SPEAKER_03]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_03]: I love all I love the princess diary so much. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, great film a great couple films They're filming the third one.
[SPEAKER_02]: I know. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, so good. [SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't be a big time to be in Hathaway. [SPEAKER_02]: Double wears Prada. [SPEAKER_02]: She's doing Princess Diaries three. [SPEAKER_02]: She's also in that new movie with the Colleen Hoover adaptation. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that one.
[SPEAKER_02]: Double ring and Hathaway resurgence. [SPEAKER_02]: Good for her. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, Queen. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for being here today. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, anyway. [SPEAKER_02]: All for being here today. [SPEAKER_03]: Why we started off with a grant leave Phillips episode with Anne Hathaway?
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know who's to say, but the rumors are true. [SPEAKER_03]: Grant leave Phillips is here. [SPEAKER_03]: We had a conversation with him and it was just what a darling. [SPEAKER_03]: My absolutely adore him. [SPEAKER_03]: And what a truly, and what a special monumental [SPEAKER_03]: Guess to have is our first actor guest on the podcast.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think it's because the way that we like to talk about the show is like more from like the other side rather than from like the actor experience. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but he is that one person who has kind of like a foot on each end. [SPEAKER_02]: The other person being George Bell, who I really want to be with, who I've worked on the show, but also is in it and of course the troubadour is going to be in it because he's going to be singing.
[SPEAKER_02]: He has some lines which we talk about. [SPEAKER_02]: We actually talk more in depth about next week, but we get his perspective or not next week. [SPEAKER_02]: What is it? [SPEAKER_02]: We actually talk more about it Thursday because we have a specific [SPEAKER_02]: true bidore episode, all of his appearances, but in this episode we get more of his perspective on it, but also what it was like working with Amy on the show, and so I love that that's like where we're starting with still talking to people who worked on the show.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're also in it. [SPEAKER_02]: I know. [SPEAKER_03]: It's so, oh, it's so good. [SPEAKER_03]: I love him. [SPEAKER_03]: He has such a calming presence about him. [SPEAKER_03]: He's so grounded and very well spoken and very intentional with his words. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm really excited for you guys to hear this conversation today.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's also drinking coffee. [SPEAKER_02]: He is. [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, of course, you have a coffee. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I love it. [SPEAKER_03]: But before we dive in with Grandly Phillips, [SPEAKER_03]: We have a very special announcement about our next leg of Patreon as Sarah, if you will.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, new era. [SPEAKER_03]: As many of you know, we're going to talk about it next week. [SPEAKER_03]: We just finished covering a year in the life on Patreon, which wraps up Gilmore revisited, which is our recap. [SPEAKER_03]: A popular full recap podcast on patreon and it's the end of an era, but we couldn't quite [SPEAKER_03]: Stop talking about Gilmore Girls during Gilmore Girls season.
[SPEAKER_03]: No. [SPEAKER_03]: It was geopolitically that our recap podcast ended on September, like the first week of September. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: We couldn't just move on to something else. [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, it's never been able to move on from the show. [SPEAKER_02]: You haven't noticed?
[SPEAKER_02]: As it turns out, famously, we have not got something. [SPEAKER_02]: We can move on from help. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm still at the restaurant. [SPEAKER_02]: still at the diner, if you will, but I'm here and I'm not leaving any time soon, and we had to find a new way to continue the conversation of the rewatch, and we would be remiss to miss that during Gilmore Girls season, especially when we were 25th anniversary.
[SPEAKER_02]: of ours. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my gosh. [SPEAKER_02]: And so we wanted to find a way to, for our next era of Patreon, to feel like we're really rewatching the episode that we're binge watching it in a completely different way than we did with Gilmouray visited because we tore this show apart.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like we glittered it apart, like assessed everything about it, what we liked, what we didn't like, what we wanted to change, what made us absolutely break in half because it was so beautiful [SPEAKER_02]: things. [SPEAKER_02]: But that's not how people normally watch the show. [SPEAKER_02]: It's not how we watch the show.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not how this show. [SPEAKER_02]: It should watch the show. [SPEAKER_02]: I actually never recommend taking your favorite show and then taking notes on every single episode. [SPEAKER_02]: Don't do it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: It's very fascinating. [SPEAKER_03]: But we wanted this experience to be more like the way that we all watch the show.
[SPEAKER_03]: And what better way to do that than to rewatch the show. [SPEAKER_03]: Just watch it. [SPEAKER_03]: Last year we, I think it was last year. [SPEAKER_03]: We David's last year. [SPEAKER_03]: The rewatch club, which is merch that we made, not really anticipating that that was going to become the next year of Patreon.
[SPEAKER_03]: So our next era of Patreon is called the rewatch club where we will be rewatching most of the episodes from the series at a more expedited rate. [SPEAKER_03]: We're not going to release one episode a week. [SPEAKER_03]: and the format's going to be different. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: So Haley and I have been recording episodes.
[SPEAKER_03]: We did it when we were together, which was a lot of fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And eight episodes are me and Tara together in Georgia in like the heat of June. [SPEAKER_02]: We are trying to like, I'm trying to raise my whole but it is so hot. [SPEAKER_02]: Because we had to turn off the air for the sound.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: you have to say thank you for that for the sound quality because basically what it is it's DVD commentary is like you're going to watch it with us we're going to sing our sound in it we do a 5678 play so that you can start that episode at the same time as us we do a 5678 skip for the intro song because we cannot pay karaoke those rights for every episode so we skip it but [SPEAKER_02]: syncing up your watching experience with us and we're just going to talk reach the chat the whole episode so that we feel like we're watching it together yeah if you're like binge watching the season by yourself and you want to feel like your friends are there just turn on the rewatch club turn on Gilmore girls when we say to when we tell you to and um
[SPEAKER_02]: We can watch it together, and as we say, we hope that we are not talking over the parts that you talked over the last time. [SPEAKER_02]: It's true, but it's a lot less in depth than revisited was, like literally every single detail of that was torn apart with this one. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, we're having a good time.
[SPEAKER_02]: We love that. [SPEAKER_02]: Plot twist every episode so far as a ten on the time. [SPEAKER_02]: Every episode, even episodes that we were like, uh, like, would rate the super high when we first watched it for revisited. [SPEAKER_02]: Now we're like 10 on his hand. [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, it's the best feeling I've ever had.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think especially coming from season seven because that's when we started watching We were at season seven when we said to go back to season one. [SPEAKER_02]: It was like take me home Exactly and it just really did feel like home. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like emo when we turned on the pilot Because I was like oh my gosh these are my girls these are my girls not these are the girls I don't think these are the girls are yeah for sure especially like speaking of grant like when he pops up I'm like oh my god [UNKNOWN]: There he is.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, yeah, and like having that context is really fun. [SPEAKER_02]: It's also like having talked to some of the writers too. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like going through it. [SPEAKER_02]: Like you kind of see things differently. [SPEAKER_02]: Totally like, but we're not it's not this is not like revisited.
[SPEAKER_02]: It is going to complete own. [SPEAKER_02]: I'd say like really upbeat. [SPEAKER_02]: Like we're happy with time. [SPEAKER_02]: We're having a great time. [SPEAKER_03]: It's two in depth. [SPEAKER_03]: It's very casual, it's very cozy. [SPEAKER_03]: Haley and I nine times out of ten, or just wearing like our oversized t-shirts that are like they are merch.
[SPEAKER_03]: And no makeup. [SPEAKER_03]: No makeup. [SPEAKER_03]: In our beds, we're literally in bed watching this. [SPEAKER_03]: When Harry met Sally style, it's incredible. [SPEAKER_03]: And so much fun. [SPEAKER_03]: And we're having a great time. [SPEAKER_03]: And we'd love for you to join us.
[SPEAKER_03]: So. [SPEAKER_03]: Our vicious trawlops tier, which is our highest term patron, they're going to be getting 16 episodes a month. [SPEAKER_03]: Four episodes a week, which we know sounds like a lot, but we are all binge watching the show. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, like you were going to watch four episodes on a Saturday anyway.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_03]: And then it will trickle down from there as far as how many episodes get released perched here. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, per tier. [SPEAKER_03]: We're basically going to be doing about 16 episodes per season. [SPEAKER_03]: So we're not covering every single episode or rewatching every episode.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then as we get into the later seasons, we're going to cover a few less because. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because it's like one through five we're doing 16 episodes from each which we're chosen. [SPEAKER_02]: Very particularly with like a lot of anxiety and angst going into it, but even as we're continuing on like Spoiler alert and season one we skip Paris is burning and I wish we had it because I am famously doesn't like it I know and I now I want to know if she would like it In this capacity yeah, I have caught watching.
[SPEAKER_02]: I just passed totally in season six we're covered 12 episodes and then in season seven We'll cover four and then for their Bible or just gonna rewatch fall [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but you'll hear more of why in next week's episode when we talk about their rival only do a recap But really excited every every single episode We're talking about how much we're having like it's true like when you put something on your calendar to do your mind It's kind of like oh, I have something I need to do and then when you [SPEAKER_02]: Realize you're sitting down to watch Gamark rolls with your best friends so that your besties on Patreon can join in later.
[SPEAKER_02]: So much fun. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so much fun. [SPEAKER_03]: And [SPEAKER_03]: What I love is that with our vicious trawlipsed here who, you know, get a live episode, a live recording with us every month, we're still going to do that. [SPEAKER_03]: So there will be an experience if you join our vicious trawlipsed here if you're already there, where you'll get to watch an episode with us every month.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's so much fun. [SPEAKER_03]: It's an opportunity for the rewatch club. [SPEAKER_03]: So we're really excited and speaking of the rewatch club, we are going to be re releasing that merch this Friday So that if you would like to if you haven't already or if you haven't you've worn the hell out of it I know it's been mine.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like it's really because I just put it in the dryer and like I know It's like this dude need to be like yeah That to dry. [SPEAKER_03]: I really do need to be either laid flat to dry or hung yeah [SPEAKER_03]: Um, instead of being put in the dryer with our clients. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm still wearing my low internment times a week.
[SPEAKER_03]: I also wear it a lot. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: But if you are need of a rewatch club, T or lightweight, crewneck or yours, one of the can shape class, which I use all the time. [SPEAKER_03]: I know if you should honestly be drinking our beves out of that for rewatch club. [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes you do.
[SPEAKER_03]: I really should be doing that more often. [SPEAKER_03]: But if you want it's going to be re-released this Friday, you would like to explore the great indoors, the great indoors, the lifestyle, it's a religion. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they're rewatch club. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And if you're a part of our super cool party people here, there will be a certain amount.
[SPEAKER_03]: We will have more details about how many episodes you were going to receive every week from the rewatch club. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So look out for [SPEAKER_03]: And if you're interested in joining us for this, go to patreon.com slash Gilmour to say, we're going to have so much fun.
[SPEAKER_03]: www.patreon.com slash Gilmour to say, that's the one. [SPEAKER_03]: We're so excited. [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be so much fun. [SPEAKER_02]: And it starts on September 26th, because today we'll be in Ann Arbor. [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: You have to definitely get your tickets to Ann Arbor, they're already starting to sell quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have a lot of different events this year, not just the coffee coffee coffee event, which we are still doing, but we have even more fun. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a more fun birthday bash for the 25th anniversary on Friday. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: In person trivia on Saturday night, which I am so so.
[SPEAKER_02]: So. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, like one foot sad, one foot excited because I'm like, oh, I think I'll have to say it this. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'll play. [SPEAKER_02]: But I also don't think it's fair. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's fair. [SPEAKER_02]: So we'll be hosting, and we will have a great time with all of you there.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is gonna be a costume contest on Saturday. [SPEAKER_02]: It's gonna be so much fun. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll have a special merch there. [SPEAKER_02]: There's going to be so much stuff that rock groupers is because Lisa and Lane are experts at this every detail will have been thought of.
[SPEAKER_02]: They'll be yellowed. [SPEAKER_02]: Daisy's in coffee and sweet treats and hopefully you. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we'd love to see you there. [SPEAKER_03]: But yes, that is when the rewatch club starts. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it is on Friday, September 26th, and the first four episodes of the rewatch club will be released that day to the vicious stories for episodes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Pilot, the Loyalized First Day at Children, which recently, I will say, I did a typo on the Instagram. [SPEAKER_02]: I put the Loyalized First Day at Yale [SPEAKER_02]: No, the girl he's roasted me. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, hey, I deserved it, but the first four episodes are the pilot the Loyalites for stay at Yale.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, children. [SPEAKER_02]: Chilton. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my gosh, it's a horror! [SPEAKER_02]: Um, send us like cinnamon's wake and then raise birthday parties. [SPEAKER_02]: Raise birthday parties. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's so much fun. [SPEAKER_03]: We're having a great time. [SPEAKER_03]: So we hope to see you guys there.
[SPEAKER_03]: But without further ado, let's talk to your greatly filled up. [SPEAKER_03]: Let's talk to Grant. [SPEAKER_03]: Greatly Philips, welcome to Gilmore to say, we are so happy to have you here. [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: Get to be here. [SPEAKER_01]: Couldn't be here. [SPEAKER_03]: You're coming to us from Nashville, which is where you live, normally, that's where that's like home base for you.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep, it was Los Angeles for many years, but I've been here now since 2013. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, wow, a good long time, and you love it. [SPEAKER_01]: I do, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It is one endless Bachelor at Party, as you may know. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh. [SPEAKER_03]: No.
[SPEAKER_01]: I almost said that to you when we were chatting beforehand. [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, I've never been to Nashville, but I anticipated some to hide in my life. [SPEAKER_03]: I will be there for a Bachelor at Party. [SPEAKER_01]: I have still not been anybody to a Bachelor at Party myself.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, come on. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, actually, I just got, I just got engaged. [SPEAKER_03]: So maybe I'll have my Bachelor at Party in Nashville, and one by a grant. [SPEAKER_01]: that would be great. [SPEAKER_01]: Talk to my agent then. [SPEAKER_01]: We'll set it up. [SPEAKER_01]: Perfect.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'll set it up. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll be so great. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And in a very Gilmore fashion, you have a cup of coffee with. [SPEAKER_02]: I thought you were just a plain black coffee. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: The darkest black and yeah, I felt like it was appropriate.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah [SPEAKER_03]: But we'd love to hear a little bit about, you know, before Gilmour Girls, how you got into your music career, what your history with music was, what led you and drew you to want to become a musician.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, for me, it began when I was, I was given a guitar when I was about 13, I guess, and I was already quite, you know, quite a fan of the music that I grew up with Elton John and the Beatles and you name it. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, and so when I, when I had the guitar my hands, I soon began to write songs and all through high school that was, [SPEAKER_01]: that was my interest and eventually it led to like trying to start bands and that I moved from Northern California to Los Angeles and after so many years of kind of beating the pavement as they say the band Grantley Buffalo was signed to a [SPEAKER_01]: a small label called slash and the next thing we knew, we were on the road, you know, and we were on the road, we were, we were on a plane going to Europe and, you know, and that was, that was my 90s, you know, and it was a busy, busy, exciting time.
[SPEAKER_01]: At the end of that decade, I went off on my own, you know, kind of went solo and no, no, I fully went solo. [SPEAKER_01]: And that was a great time, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: When I was grantly buffalo had made four albums, I was getting, you know, involved with making my, my solar records and I got that call from Amy Sherman, Paladino, you know, about the show, the Gilmore girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so it was just kind of perfect timing when I was, you know, I was ready to explore something new and there it was. [SPEAKER_03]: how poetic, how perfect because you were really solo on the show with the exception of I think I was I spent a lot of time with you this morning on Gilmore Girls watching all of your scenes in the songs and when you [SPEAKER_03]: saying Mona Lisa, you had a band behind you, but it was one of the few, if not the only time, on Gilmore Girls, that you were not just a company by yourself.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that, yeah, you're right. [SPEAKER_01]: Although I can, I can think of one occasion where my, my Nimesis, who I eventually kind of, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: We worked it out, Dave Ruber Allen, and I love these as a true source. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course.
[SPEAKER_01]: We play this one together, kind of as, you know, a moment of truth. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a very smart. [SPEAKER_03]: That's true. [SPEAKER_03]: That's true. [SPEAKER_03]: So rewinding a little bit. [SPEAKER_03]: We're here to this connection to Amy Sherman Paladino come in. [SPEAKER_03]: And what prompted that phone call.
[SPEAKER_03]: We'd love a little history on that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, I can offer my best hunch. [SPEAKER_01]: My understanding is that, you know, I mean, she's a big music fan, as she would know from the show, you know, it's, there's a great palette of songs and bands that you know, a lot of people would be, [SPEAKER_01]: introduced to in some ways, you know, she and Daniel Paladino, they both had been fans of Grandly Buffalo and had seen me as I understand performing solo as well, so they had sort of followed the career in some ways.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what ultimately led to this inquiry. [SPEAKER_01]: Are you interested in playing this part, and to my knowledge, it was just that it was going to be a one-shot type of thing. [SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea that I would wind up returning as I did several times. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: That was going to be our follow-up question was, what was the, I was going to ask if there was a testing process and audition process. [SPEAKER_01]: It was, yeah, yeah, yeah, there was nothing like that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just one of those, those wonderful, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, things that that falls into one's lap, maybe one's in a lifetime, you know.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm quite grateful for that, and you know, and in turn, it was a lot of fun, but it also introduced my music and this, you know, everything I had done before to a very different audience, you know, totally, and it's kind of great. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Did you have any acting background?
[SPEAKER_03]: Because you, you don't just play music on the show. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, of course, that is the main gig, right? [SPEAKER_03]: Right. [SPEAKER_03]: But you had to, really, there was, there were a couple episodes where you had lines, you had a motion, you had a lot going on there. [SPEAKER_01]: You're a story.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's, yeah, fantastic. [SPEAKER_03]: So did you have any acting experience or did they just kind of take a chance on like, oh, this guy can do a lot more [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I appreciate that. [SPEAKER_01]: I was someone who was involved with local theater. [SPEAKER_01]: In fact, about that time when I picked up the guitar, I had been performing as a child magician, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was 12 years old. [SPEAKER_01]: This was the era of Steve Martin and Robin Williams. [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it was a great era in terms of comedy. [SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, [SPEAKER_01]: and silliness. [SPEAKER_01]: And there was a place in Stockton, California, where I grew up, a roadside vada built theater where sketches were performed and a play very big on interacting with the audience.
[SPEAKER_01]: who were very big and interacting with DACA-REES and whatever, you know, might be at their table and Fred Chicken at the part of it. [SPEAKER_01]: And so that was my early sort of introduction to being on stage and performing in other ways aside from music, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I'm sort of sort of a musician playing an actor playing a musician or something like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure where it's all Roboro's at this point. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a little Russian doll. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you what how did that role I guess from that one shot that you thought that it was going to be how did that expand was such as Amy being like okay now you're going to come back for another day or was there a conversation about that I don't believe there was a real conference it was just sort of like are you available next week you know are you available next month and and and we always you know prioritize any opportunity to be on on Gilmore girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: and, you know, juggling two or eight and my availability, yeah, it just kind of, it just kind of blossomed in that fashion, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: They would give me a call and, you know, one of the producers would ring me and say, [SPEAKER_01]: We have a scene coming up. [SPEAKER_01]: They would describe the scene, anything spring to mind in terms of song selection, because they were also kind of looking to me for songs that I had written, which is incredible.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's amazing how many times that really linked up where the song I had in my back pocket and a scene. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, for instance, [SPEAKER_01]: We had gone how many years without any gun mortgherols and then along comes the reunion show. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was cast to be in the winter episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so we talked about that. [SPEAKER_01]: Do you have any songs about, it's like, well, I do have a song that I wrote. [SPEAKER_01]: few years back, I recorded it. [SPEAKER_01]: I never really released it in a wide way. [SPEAKER_01]: It's called Winter Glow, and it was just kind of just ready made for that scene, you know?
[SPEAKER_01]: So I just love that. [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like there was a lot of serendipity that occurred with Gilmour Girls, you know? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that was going to be my next question was what the collaboration process was like because as I was talking to you a little bit about before we started recording, as we watched this show with a more, you know, we watch it for enjoyment for comfort and we have since, you know, we were, we were little ladies, but in watching it with a more fine tooth comb and a magnifying glass, we found that so much of your lyrics really aided in the storytelling, especially between [SPEAKER_03]: and we were just really curious what that collaboration process was like.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it sounds like they really did look to you to have songs in your back pocket already. [SPEAKER_03]: Things you would written, things you'd produced that had their ex that would aid in the storytelling. [SPEAKER_03]: So was that really what, how it went down? [SPEAKER_03]: Or did Amy say, I really want you to play this song.
[SPEAKER_03]: I love this song. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that was certainly the case as well. [SPEAKER_01]: There were plenty of times where Amy reached out and said, [SPEAKER_01]: I would like to use honey don't think, you know, it's kind of a romantic song, it's a personal song, you know, a relationship.
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of song, you know, or any number of songs, mocking birds. [SPEAKER_01]: And let's, could we do that for this scene? [SPEAKER_01]: So she would approach me, you know, about that quite a few times as well. [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, those are songs that I wrote. [SPEAKER_01]: There were also interesting covers now and then, be true to your school.
[SPEAKER_02]: I love that one. [SPEAKER_02]: That was one of my favorite ones. [SPEAKER_02]: It is interesting. [SPEAKER_02]: You're talking about the introduction of a lot of these songs in your music to younger audience and just the popularity just keeps growing in the expansion of the audience. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like skewing younger that there's songs that you covered that when I heard the original version, I was like, this isn't [SPEAKER_02]: This isn't who sings this, that like growing up with you, that was like, no, no, no, the town trip it are.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's great. [SPEAKER_02]: Who is this person? [SPEAKER_01]: That's so great. [SPEAKER_01]: What's wild to think a song like that? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that came out in the 60s. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just, you know, it's like listening to ancient folk songs, you know, but yeah, of course.
[SPEAKER_03]: So was that, I was curious about the cover songs, because [SPEAKER_03]: Was that a situation where you said, you know what, I don't really have a song that goes with the scene. [SPEAKER_03]: So maybe let's choose a song that I can cover, that goes a little bit better hand in hand with the scene.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, how is that decided? [SPEAKER_01]: That's like another tier of choices. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, in the case of me treating your school, I don't know where the choice to come up with, wake me up before you go go. [SPEAKER_01]: came from or Mienhulio down by the school yard, there were a few, there was one, do you remember the episode where I believe Laura Lai was thrown into Cheo?
[SPEAKER_03]: Rory was thrown at home. [SPEAKER_01]: Rory was thrown at thank you, yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, you're talking about mama try. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so I said love, I got moment. [SPEAKER_01]: I grew up listening to, to Merle Haggard, my dad loved Merle Haggard. [SPEAKER_01]: And, and so I said, what about mama try it?
[SPEAKER_01]: That what do you think about that? [SPEAKER_01]: And there it will. [SPEAKER_01]: Let me run that up the flagpole in it. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was great. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: It was great. [SPEAKER_01]: That seems like an obvious choice. [SPEAKER_01]: Probably, but I can't remember what those were. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I was always that kind of, that, that great rapport and, you know, funny how many times though it just seemed to make sense though.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it really does. [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe wake me up before you go go was the only one that I was like, huh, is this about death? [SPEAKER_03]: Because it was in response to Luke's uncle has passed away and, you know, the girls are trying to help him. [SPEAKER_03]: And it's in between your cover of that is a transition in between [SPEAKER_03]: And Laurel and Brey walking through town talking about how Luke's Uncle died and it's like wake me up before you go I'm like all right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_03]: I think this is a song about death. [SPEAKER_01]: I never thought of it. [SPEAKER_03]: But I wait a time. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah Before you go. [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting before you go go. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah [SPEAKER_00]: if you go go. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: But for the most part, I totally agree that, you know, as we, again, started to watch the show with a more fine tooth comb, we realized how much the lyrics of the songs you were singing, whether they were covers or your own music, really. [SPEAKER_03]: narrated what was going on within the girl's life so well and more times than not if not all times you were really there to be The narration of Lourlay and Brewery not really anybody outside of their world.
[SPEAKER_03]: Was that a conversation with you and Amy? [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, but But not inaccurate at all, though. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I think that's yeah, that's an interesting observation Yeah, it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of it's an extension of [SPEAKER_01]: They're inner dialogue or something like that, you know, in the way that Sam Phillips also creates this this whole other tapestry, you know, totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I feel like my music and and all of the great music that Sam brought to the show and I mean, even the, you know, I mean the great Carol Kingsong. [SPEAKER_01]: at the top, you know, of course, you know, pretty good company there. [SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, a huge huge delight for me was when the, um, the town was flooded by, you know, a budding troubadours, a right-wing step to star's hollow.
[UNKNOWN]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Love. [SPEAKER_03]: That's actually Haley's favorite episode. [SPEAKER_03]: Part of it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so surreal and insane. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like a weird fever dream. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you know, and the line up there, incredible performers.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, I mean, you know, the fact that you've got Sonic Youth Wandering, or yeah, Wandering starts all over. [SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was, that was pretty cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I have a big, big fan of Sonic Youth, so I was quite enamored. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, absolutely.
[SPEAKER_02]: So you, Sam Phillips, that's another one that's really fun is that you are more of the forward-facing music, the musician in the show that hers is more just as music is heard, but she gets to step in and be a troubadour in the episode which is... [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you talked about with Louise Goffin and the, uh, the later, absolutely.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And no, in part, in parting, in parting. [SPEAKER_03]: So I think Sam Phillips comes in and she is. [SPEAKER_01]: You're right. [SPEAKER_01]: You're right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: There's so many times where she actually comes out of the shadows there.
[SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Very mysterious. [SPEAKER_01]: No relation. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: No relation, right? [SPEAKER_03]: Have you guys worked together outside of the spectrum of Gilmore? [SPEAKER_01]: Well, we're more great friends, so we're not related, but we are great friends, yeah, and her husband, Eric, and I, Eric Gorphane, we've worked together a whole bunch and everything in fact, you'll hear him and his violin and his arrangements on several of my recordings.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a small world, just a great group of friends. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So speaking of, you know, [SPEAKER_03]: writing music and of course you have a new album coming out this year which is or this month it's just come out when when this episode airs. [SPEAKER_03]: Was there anything that you wrote for Gilmore Girls?
[SPEAKER_03]: Were there any songs that you were like oh I'm writing this with the show in mind or songs that maybe made an appearance on the show that never made it to songs? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes there was one [SPEAKER_01]: There was a song called Pre-Owned Heart sort of like that. [SPEAKER_04]: I love that song.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that was one that has never really been released into the while before with the exception of Gilmore Girls. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a full link version of it that you know, I've demoed, but it's never been put out in the world. [SPEAKER_01]: Are there others?
[SPEAKER_03]: What about smile? [SPEAKER_01]: That's another one. [SPEAKER_01]: That isn't another one. [SPEAKER_01]: That was, yeah, that was featured on the soundtrack, right? [SPEAKER_03]: The soundtrack. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I kind of liked that. [SPEAKER_01]: That certain things are kind of part of that universe.
[SPEAKER_03]: It just exists there. [SPEAKER_03]: That's really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a great thing. [SPEAKER_01]: That was another one that [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, it was performed by, um, I'm goodness. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to say by Dean, but it's not by Dean is by it. [SPEAKER_01]: You might know.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's another song. [SPEAKER_01]: What's the big sensation? [SPEAKER_01]: What's the new? [SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember it. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a Zach. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: You play what's the big emotion? [SPEAKER_01]: What's the emotion? [SPEAKER_01]: It was just, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of off the cuff, uh, uh, uh. [SPEAKER_02]: When Mrs. Cameron writing a song together, Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Did you write that? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I wrote that. [SPEAKER_03]: that way that's so cool. [SPEAKER_03]: We were just talking about that when we revisited season six that we were like, where do we think the song came from and it came from you?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we were talking uh we were up up at uh Union City in Canada a couple of years ago about that and uh oh very yeah yeah that's right it was Zach that's right [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: When you write a song like that, are you writing like, um, like, from you or are you like kind of stepping into like what that character style might be?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think in that case. [SPEAKER_01]: But the song is that sort of like, yeah, you know, what I felt would be appropriate, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, every now and then I get involved in trying to write. [SPEAKER_01]: for someone else. [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't happen a great deal, but there's a little bit of that, you know, trying to put your trying to imagine, you know, their voice and the attributes and their essence.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which can go really, you know, horribly awry, you know, presenting your song. [SPEAKER_01]: Here's what you sound like to me. [SPEAKER_01]: There's what it's like, it could be flattering or not. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Totally. [SPEAKER_02]: But I guess in this case, you have the distance of it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, no. [SPEAKER_02]: This is your character. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: It's nothing like you. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a little safety. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Good. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm realizing that, you know, the tree, the sort of family tree of [SPEAKER_01]: The musical family tree of Gilmore Girls, you've got, you know, it's pretty broad, isn't it?
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when you use this whole lane span, you know, and yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a whole other thing. [SPEAKER_01]: That's a whole other thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: No, the way that I mean, I know, I just love him and the way that they incorporated both Amy and Dan incorporated the, just music into the show is so important.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it really sets the tone of the entire series. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, I think that's true. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a big part of it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's funny. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I grew up listening to, I see, listening because I grew up watching television shows that had great theme songs and we're music was part of that.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was part of the thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And it seems like that kind of went away for a period. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, we'd go more at it. [SPEAKER_01]: You had that, you know, it's all right there. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I never felt that the temperature of the show hit jump ahead skip ahead, you know, yeah, no, no, and there's skip in sure there are moments of silence that, you know, where the dialogue really has to speak for itself and isn't [SPEAKER_03]: there's no underscore, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: But there are so many moments that are made because of the score that's underneath it, whether it's you, Sam Phillips, you know, another band, XTC, who sings, then she appeared when Justin Murray have like their first kiss as a couple is one that I can't watch that a lot. [SPEAKER_03]: Watch it, my 12-year-old may love to that scene.
[SPEAKER_03]: I 33 year old me also loves that scene, but it was, I hear that song and I'm like immediately put in the world. [SPEAKER_03]: And that is how I feel when I listen to your music, because all of a sudden, you know, your songs are on playlists of mine and other people's, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, [SPEAKER_03]: And I love that I don't think there's really been a show like that in a long time where music is so woven into the storyline that you can hear a song and immediately feel like placed down into that world.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's that's that's really true. [SPEAKER_01]: I have to imagine that a lot of people were introduced to artists through Gilmour Girls through that use of music. [SPEAKER_01]: They might have discovered otherwise, you know, because there's a long list of artists that I still have to, you know, have to kind of do a deep dive on because it's so extensive, you know, the music placement.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think in terms of uniqueness of music, it's very unique that your role is well, that like I feel like I don't know another show where we have this like Chubodor who's like, front-ends of purposes, like communicating and interdialogue between characters. [SPEAKER_02]: But what I was interested in is who you thought the town Chubodor was to this town, like within the narrative, like why did this town Chubodor choose Star's Hollow?
[SPEAKER_02]: What were they doing there? [SPEAKER_02]: They clearly had a very, [SPEAKER_01]: strong conviction about what a tribute or should be based on love days and tribute doors like who did you see this character well it was it was it was baked into the script you know there is a there's an eccentricity to the character that that Amy Dan created you know yeah and I I feel like I kind of like you know I zoomed in on that and and [SPEAKER_01]: I would, I would often comment that it seems like the, the Jupiter is really worked up here, you know?
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome on the wrong side of the bed. [SPEAKER_01]: What am I projecting that is giving you that inspiration, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Really do I complain like that? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't complain like that. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't complain like that. [SPEAKER_01]: I know we don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: But wait a minute about doing it. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: But I got to kick out of that, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if it was like kind of this stupid or is encroaching on my [SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're a bone to pick with Kirk, you know, yeah, oh my gosh, yeah, I feel like a lot of times when a show will take that leap and involve music they are quite often it seems like the choice has been made to sort of [SPEAKER_01]: you know, to utilize something that's instantly recognizable, you know, there's certain cache with songs that are on the radio, for instance, you know, at that very moment, they're, you know, they're climbing up the charts, they're being pushed by the labels.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so it seems like kind of a slam dunk in a way, you know, in terms of the choices and [SPEAKER_01]: you know, everyone can pat themselves on the back that we, that we license this song for this show, but that really wasn't the case. [SPEAKER_01]: It was all driven by Amy and Dan kind of, you know, saying, this is what we want.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is, this is what is right for this show. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that extends beyond the music, you know, I mean, there are references and [SPEAKER_01]: and to characters and literary figures and all sorts of things that move so fast that you have to have a clipboard sometimes go, I got, what is that?
[SPEAKER_01]: Google that, and then it's another rabbit hole, but kind of fantastic if that went past a group of a folks that had to kind of sign off in the lab, we're not sure that people are going to get the Dorothy Parker reference or [SPEAKER_01]: you know, why, why do we have this song in here? [SPEAKER_01]: What?
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and it's, and I'm like that she really just sort of pulled off a great coup and defied all of that and said because it is, it's going to be in there because the last time there, you know, and maybe to, you know, I mean, I was on the great receiving end of that, so I'm quite, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: grateful. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I feel like everyone we've spoken to who's been a part of the show, whether it was behind the scenes or onscreen, has had the same thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, just just has said that that they felt so lucky to be a part of a show that was as smart and creative and intentional as the way Amy and Dan made it, whether that was in the references, the clothing, the music, the ambiance.
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I love I love hearing that everybody kind of across the board felt that way. [SPEAKER_01]: I got to choose my own clothing as well. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, oh, oh, no way, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, [SPEAKER_02]: Something else that a lot of people who have been a part of the show has said is that this show took a lot of takes that it was shot after shot after shot to get word perfect to get it exactly where Amy wanted it to be.
[SPEAKER_02]: What was your role in that and like having to be a part of these takes was that something that you loved or was that something that was. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, for instance, that scene for love days is intributors. [SPEAKER_01]: I was one of the first ones I had done, and this is where, you know, it's the whole town is gathered.
[SPEAKER_01]: in the kind of the town hall or something like that, you know, miss patties, dance studio, I believe. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, those kinds of shots, they took forever, so you're on set at five in the morning. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm kind of new to this, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm giving my all, I'm putting every bit of passion into my lines. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I've learned my lines seven in the morning, I'm giving it everything, not realizing that [SPEAKER_01]: In all likelihood, my particular shot when the camera's really on me, that won't be until about two in the morning the next day.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're still in there, and at that point in time, most of the cast has gone, and there's a chair, and I'm just, and I'm delivering those lines to a chair, and, and, and, oh my God. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm still still trying to pull a little bit of voice out of me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course, yeah, but yeah, but very wonderful Sally Struthers commented about seven that morning, like, you have great, great, staying power, [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, I'm thinking, I'm gonna nail this in about a half an hour.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, maybe maybe 10 hours after that or more. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my gosh. [SPEAKER_01]: So it was challenging and you don't want to be the one who goofs and trips up because it's like a high wire rack where everything moves in tandem and the camera is following. [SPEAKER_01]: all of this stuff and it goes from here and it picks up this person and, you know, so there's a lot of that for me, where I'm in the shot, but I'm kind of out of focus.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm over there, but I'm strumming, but I'm walking is strumming and I'm in time and I'm singing, but I'm not because if I do in reality, then it will interrupt the dialogue. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that's the act turns out that's what acting as as well. [SPEAKER_01]: I know you're just pretending to play It's a yes, it's a like-tending and and hitting your mark and and but it was really a lot of fun though, you know [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Was that hitting your mark? [SPEAKER_02]: Was that something new? [SPEAKER_02]: Because I know that, like, in the lore of the beginning of the show, the Alexis was so new that Lorelei or Lauren, rather, was having to guide her to her mark, because that's not something she was familiar with.
[SPEAKER_02]: Was that something that you were, uh, took a couple tries to get right? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, you know, I mean, for me, the challenge was sometimes a song, you know, has a certain tempo, you know? [SPEAKER_04]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: and then there's walking that has a certain tempo and trying to kind of like divide that in my head.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that like, can you just drum a little bit slower? [SPEAKER_01]: Walk a little bit faster. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, it's a little bit bigger than that. [SPEAKER_03]: It's a little bit bigger than that. [SPEAKER_03]: Literally when I was just about to say, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And of course, you do it, you know?
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: weird things like that. [SPEAKER_01]: Not only. [SPEAKER_01]: But no, I think I managed. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I could remember. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I could still remember like maybe forgetting my line, you know, once when it was, it was always the kind of thing, it wasn't like where you had a whole bunch of words.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you got to, you got three lines. [SPEAKER_01]: You got two words, rather, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: And there's much writing on that, so all the anxiety that you would typically spread about a large thing, gets invested in that word or two, and that's why I'm going to open, you know?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, did you perform live ever? [SPEAKER_03]: I know that there was, there were some, yeah, on the show. [SPEAKER_03]: Was there ever, uh, [SPEAKER_03]: a moment where like they've really captured you. [SPEAKER_03]: Be true to your school as someone that comes to mind first.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would say well always, you know, I was always performing when the camera's on me and it's [SPEAKER_01]: And you hear, and you see me playing. [SPEAKER_01]: I think most of the time, I'm every time I did it for real. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes, you might have a situation where a plane flies over, though.
[SPEAKER_01]: You might say it a lot, too. [SPEAKER_01]: And, or there was a problem with the audio. [SPEAKER_01]: So in that case, we'd have to do ADR, have to go back in and have to kind of play and sync with myself so that we could. [SPEAKER_01]: So they'll be gonna have the, you know, good audio.
[SPEAKER_01]: But no, I was always doing that. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, sometimes what we would do would put an ear bug in a little hearing aid, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I would hear the song so I would be in rhythm with it. [SPEAKER_01]: So when I came in, I'm gonna be in rhythm. [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm playing to a version that I've already cut in a studio.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's me and then I'm playing to that and then they go, [SPEAKER_01]: I know when I since the camera that I'm going to start singing and then I'm going to stop, but I'm going to keep on strumming and there's a lot of like, you know, you had a really think that stuff and we got good at the, of course, but you're in how to do it, but yeah, that's yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But by and large, you know, we all, I think we often were able to keep the, the, you know, keep the life recording call the production audio. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm on the set, you know, love. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: That's, as I was watching today, I was trying to like, get a sense.
[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, does this feel studio this feels live? [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's live. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and sometimes I would like, well, I got to recreate this audio now because there was a plane that, you know, flew in. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to go my backyard with the microphone and create that kind of sounds like I'm kind of on the street, you know, because I am.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I do that smart, but they have a million techniques for doing that kind of stuff and it's probably gotten better these days, you know, I'm sure my dog got frightened because it's here's thundering out here. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, it's there's rain passing through moving to the east, so yeah, yeah, the poor dogs, you know, between the fireworks and the thunder.
[SPEAKER_03]: I know. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, a lot of my friends had to go home early on 4th of July because I really have to be home with my dog. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And I understand because that has to be so scary. [SPEAKER_00]: with a little guy. [SPEAKER_00]: For the pop. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: I got it. [SPEAKER_02]: Did you have a favorite moment from set that, like, like, I know it was a lot of choreography and a lot of, like, really having to think about what was going on. [SPEAKER_02]: But do you have a favorite song or, like, a favorite line that you got to be a part of our scene?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think, um, I mean, the one, the one, the love Daisy's intributors was a great, great moment, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're not supposed to manage a kinko's, it's about integrity and I love that, or the idea that this Jupiter character would be offended by throwing your filthy money in my guitar case.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is my honor, this is my pleasure. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: But the theater of Living Arts was quite fun. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a lot of work for everyone getting that makeup on, you know, too. [SPEAKER_01]: It was the last supper to life and then Kirk and I had it out, you know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I love it. [SPEAKER_03]: As you might not make up those really fantastic because that would be the only Emmy that the show won for make up and it was so cool. [SPEAKER_03]: But that was also, I think the only or one of the only episodes where you didn't sing at all, you were truly there as an actor.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: That's right. [SPEAKER_01]: That's right. [SPEAKER_01]: That's cool. [SPEAKER_03]: I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: They were like, the town trip door is here. [SPEAKER_03]: But he's not the trip door right now. [SPEAKER_03]: He is Judas. [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's a part of the town. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think they brought it. [SPEAKER_01]: They roped in everyone. [SPEAKER_01]: They couldn't everything. [SPEAKER_01]: It was really to wear that makeup. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and you know, I had it easy. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I didn't have to wear a toga or anything like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like. [SPEAKER_04]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Some of them did. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: They got might it mightily cold out there. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I imagine. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure. [SPEAKER_01]: It feels good. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, good. [SPEAKER_03]: Ah.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, after Gilmore Girls are welcome work rolls, was going on. [SPEAKER_03]: Did you get recognized all out as the town tour? [SPEAKER_03]: But, or did you have people show up to your shows, you know, who work Gilmore Girls fans? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's still the case.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I, a few generations of fans now, you know, folks like yourself who grew up with it. [SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, it's not uncommon that a person who was a fan of grantly buffaloes or of mine, and then they're [SPEAKER_01]: their child is a fan of Gilmore Girls, you know, and now that's kind of that continues on, you know, because of this wild phenomenon, you know, we're, you know, the show is so popular, you know, we're, as I'm sure, you know, it's 25 years, the 25th anniversary, which is so wild to think about.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's more popular than it's ever been, the legacy lives on, which is really, [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be going out in September, October, November, onward, in the U.S. [SPEAKER_01]: overseas, and I meet Gilmore Cross fans all over the world. [SPEAKER_01]: Great. [SPEAKER_03]: Love. [SPEAKER_03]: That's amazing.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's so cool. [SPEAKER_03]: So you are going out on tour this year because your album, your new album in the hour of dust, is being released on September 5th by the time this episode airs, it will have been released. [SPEAKER_03]: We're so excited. [SPEAKER_03]: We did get to hear a little bit of it.
[SPEAKER_03]: What are you most excited for Gilmore Girls fans to hear? [SPEAKER_03]: Or in general, for people to hear about this album? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh goodness. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm excited to share with everyone. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a couple of singles that have been floating around. [SPEAKER_01]: She knows me as one of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just really, I mean, there's a side to this record. [SPEAKER_01]: This like a lot of my albums that's more intimate. [SPEAKER_01]: at home, you know, kind of as I was writing it, and then I took it out to LA and I recorded with some great musicians out there. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's a good, it's a good balance of both of those environments.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a very sort of personal record. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it, it, uh, it's a timely album in terms of [SPEAKER_01]: invoking some of the, uh, some of the, uh, the feelings and anxieties, perhaps, um, uh, the come along with being, uh, you know, a citizen of this country and the world for that matter.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, these are strange times and music can be, uh, [SPEAKER_01]: a way of finding a little bit of equilibrium, sometimes it's a means of escape, but I think it's also a means of kind of processing some of these things, you know. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think it could also be an anchor, especially good work because, yeah, I also think that, you know, to bring in the Gilmore girls of it all, we turned to that show often times for comfort and nostalgia.
[SPEAKER_03]: And even upon just pressing play on the first song in your album, Little Men, [SPEAKER_03]: I instantly was like, there he is, that's the town troubadour and there's something really special about feeling like you're also kind of usuring us and carrying us through these these times through your music, which still feels like you, it still feels very nostalgic.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the character of the troubadour going back to our earlier talk is kind of, you know, it's along the lines of the folk musician, you know, who is kind of like the town choir or, you know, being able to to in some way touch upon and [SPEAKER_01]: everything that's going on, you know, in this case, start the universe of Star's Hollow.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think there is a truth to that and you find it in, you know, throughout history with people like Woody Guthrie, you know, I'm a fan of, or, you know, all the people that inspired me growing up, Dylan, no young, you know, does it necessarily mean that you have to sing the headlines of the day?
[SPEAKER_01]: to achieve that, you know, it can be a matter of just, I don't know, uh, throwing it all into the emotional blender and, uh, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, putting it out there in that way, you know. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, I definitely feel that of you because like in if we're to relate it to the town trip door of being in Star's Hollow, like to project that out into our real world, I feel like that role you've soon that quite well, especially because of the balance that you achieve on the album with like songs like Little Men and bullies.
[SPEAKER_02]: But also with she knows me, which is about your wife. [SPEAKER_02]: So I think that there's this beautiful balance that you're also reminding people love to have, that we can have these deep, bad feelings about the world around us. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll also come in home to some of the most beautiful things we have.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like you said, an anchor, you know, I think it's really an important thing to [SPEAKER_01]: to hang on to that, you know, the people in your life and those things that bring you joy and you know and keep you invested and you know hope and these these things are are not without merit and meaning they're [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's what we fight for, you know.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, totally, absolutely. [SPEAKER_03]: We noticed that there's no title track on the album, so how did you land on the title to kind of pull all of these tracks together? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I, the title of the album. [SPEAKER_01]: I had ridden this title down years ago, not knowing it was going to be the title of my album.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was in Pasadena at the Norton Simon Museum of Art. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was a great painting, maybe from the 1500s from India. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was called in the Hour of Cowdust. [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, oh, that's kind of cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I wrote it down. [SPEAKER_01]: put it in my phone, you know, and, you know, over the last couple of years, I have gotten deeper and deeper into painting, especially landscape painting.
[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of like, it kind of overtook me during the pandemic as something to stay sane. [SPEAKER_01]: And now I'm fully obsessed. [SPEAKER_01]: And there was a [SPEAKER_01]: the end of the 1800s, American tonalism that was preoccupied with that particular hour of twilight, you know, kind of as a metaphor, but also just the beauty of that hour as well, you know, kind of a metaphor for a shifting of the ages, and maybe a certain amount [SPEAKER_01]: of foreboding some hope, some anxiety.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is on the heels of the American Civil War. [SPEAKER_01]: And so in the hour of dust is sort of like, it's kind of a way of tapping into that symbolism, I guess, you know, a change, a shift, preparing ourselves for, you know, challenging times. [SPEAKER_01]: the cows are led home and in doing so they kick up all the dust in the air and the lanterns are lit and you know everyone prepares themselves for the night you know and I thought that was kind of beautiful as well so that's you know at some point in time was like yeah I had this painting that I had done [SPEAKER_01]: and i was looking at that and trying to decide what what to call that painting um and i recalled that that other you know that other painting that i mentioned and not it just made sense wow this is the name of the album it tied in with a lot of the other the songs says you know i don't know yeah absolutely yeah
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I especially like the idea that you're talking about of like preparing for night to have a song. [SPEAKER_02]: Did you make it through the night? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: That was that was one that I really love. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: So I loved that kind of I guess that answer to the title.
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you make it through the night? [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, is a song that was [SPEAKER_01]: It was inspired by, um, I took a class on the, the language of the Muscogee Creek. [SPEAKER_01]: I, uh, I'm an enrolled citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation. [SPEAKER_01]: I took a class to learn some of the basics [SPEAKER_01]: which basically translates, did you make it through the night?
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, a stung-gun, jug-haya-diga is, uh, how it's said. [SPEAKER_01]: And, um, but there's no word for good morning, in the Muscogee language, but there is this great sort of phrase, and I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of humorous in a way, you know, did you make it through the day?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that seems very appropriate. [SPEAKER_03]: I guess, I mean, I'm here for the times, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: So I kind of like, you know, kind of use that as a jumping off point, I guess, for this for the song.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I loved it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's been a crazy time. [SPEAKER_01]: We had the, I live in Nashville, and you live in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we never get the norm.
[SPEAKER_02]: What was that? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: What's next? [SPEAKER_01]: The Rockets? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, do you think it's happening? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's really nice to have music, art, et cetera, really bring us together. [SPEAKER_03]: And like I said, Anchor, I was during these times, because they can feel very isolating.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's so true, it is really true, you know, I mean, there's a, it's a great thing that we're connected in this way, you know, through technology, but that could also be kind of like an isolating thing sometimes as well, you know, you fill a little left out sometimes, like, [SPEAKER_01]: These people are having a lot of fun here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And everybody. [SPEAKER_03]: What's speaking of having a lot of fun and, you know, stepping out of isolation and thankfully we can do those things now that the pandemic has come to a to at least a slowdown, if not an end. [SPEAKER_03]: You'll be going on tour this fall, where can people see you and, you know, hopefully maybe meet other Gilmore Girls fans who will also be in the audience at your shows.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Go to grantlyfilips.com under the two-or-tab and all of it is listed there. [SPEAKER_01]: I have some dates this month of September, back east, New York, Philadelphia, and goodness Boston. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a whole bunch of them in the U.S.
[SPEAKER_01]: and then there will be more that are listed in the [SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, some dates overseas as well, England. [SPEAKER_03]: Anyone you're particularly excited for? [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, they're a place that you love to learn. [SPEAKER_03]: I just like love to play. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to exclude anyone.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love, I love you. [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, you're not good at all. [SPEAKER_01]: I go to some pretty amazing places I have to admit. [SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes I only have like, but a day. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of like a sampler. [SPEAKER_01]: Paris for for a few hours, you know, it's in the time to have a casual show.
[SPEAKER_03]: Hunter Chris, wait for the I full tower. [SPEAKER_01]: So, but I'm not complaining, you know, yeah, a lot of great places. [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I understand there's a lot of Gilmore events as well that are that are happening to I've. [SPEAKER_01]: because we didn't, and one of them, and it was wonderful to meet everybody up in, that was in Canada a couple years ago.
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, come out to the shows. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I hope to make it to the one in New York. [SPEAKER_03]: That would be so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Do you know where you're playing off the top of your head? [SPEAKER_01]: City winery. [SPEAKER_03]: City winery.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Our first live event was at City Winery in New York. [SPEAKER_03]: We did our live show for the podcast. [SPEAKER_03]: We love it there. [SPEAKER_03]: It's beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, um, well, come on down. [SPEAKER_01]: I love your accommodate to be great. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: But your album coming out in fall feels so perfect for what we call the sort of Gilmour Girl season that as people step into the regular lives, if they want to have a troubadour guiding them through, here is your album, perfect for them, delivered right at the beginning of the season.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm a fall kind of person, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a, I'm a, I'm a fall. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's her way. [SPEAKER_03]: Perfect as a as a as a my I love it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's very Luke of you to show have been a little bit of a flannel ask type sure today.
[SPEAKER_03]: So before we let you go as we mentioned, Gilmour Girls is in its 25th anniversary era. [SPEAKER_03]: We're so excited to celebrate it this year. [SPEAKER_03]: So huge milestone. [SPEAKER_03]: Quarter, quarter your crisis, quarter century crisis or whatever you call it. [SPEAKER_03]: quarter-life crisis.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're asking people what they think the legacy of Gilmour Girls is and I'd love to hear your thoughts. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh goodness. [SPEAKER_01]: What is the legacy of Gilmour Girls? [SPEAKER_01]: would say that Gilmour Girls has has, it's a vehicle for goodness and for growing and connections, you know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it definitely, there's a, there is a, [SPEAKER_01]: a great, a great significance for mother-daughter relationships, you know, but it, it, it, in a very deft, wonderfully, a subversive way, it gets to some very meaty issues, you know, you know, generational things, you know, pretty fascinating in that way, you know, that's something [SPEAKER_01]: that's light-hearted, and moves along so quickly, can stick with you, you know, can resonate, you know?
[SPEAKER_01]: But I would say on the whole, it's just, you know, it's, it's, it is a source of goodness. [SPEAKER_01]: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you said you do go to is are you a rewatcher of Gilmour Girls?
[SPEAKER_02]: Have you watched it on occasion? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely. [SPEAKER_01]: It's hard not to. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's right, they agree. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's it's incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: My I have a 17 year old daughter.
[SPEAKER_01]: She she's seen it. [SPEAKER_01]: She hasn't totally came to the came to that point where she wants to. [SPEAKER_01]: the flat screen. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally. [SPEAKER_02]: Usually for us, it's just in the middle of the living room, not honestly. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm doing that last year.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: That's about that. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, hopefully one day, she will, you know, wrap herself up in it a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: If not, she's got the real thing right there. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a real thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: It's true.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well Grant, thank you so much for being here with us today. [SPEAKER_03]: I've such a joy to talk to you. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really excited about your album. [SPEAKER_01]: Nice. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, your album and your tour, your upcoming tour.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure many people who are listening will check it out whether they're listening or whether they're able to attend one of your shows. [SPEAKER_01]: That'd be great. [SPEAKER_01]: Come on out. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
