[SPEAKER_02]: Hello and welcome to the home business podcast, my name's Phil, join me as usual I couldn't run on tagline mate. [SPEAKER_02]: very good, thank you. [SPEAKER_02]: And today from another down under land, New Zealand way, we've got saved, welcome mate. [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, hey guys, this podcast is sponsored by Hermeson Cloud by Nebuchus.

[SPEAKER_02]: For a small monthly fee, you'll unlock powerful features, like secure effortless access to your system from anywhere. [SPEAKER_02]: Your choice of voice assistance, off-site backups, and more. [SPEAKER_02]: It's all configurable in the UI with no YAML needed. [SPEAKER_02]: It also supports the development of Home Assistant, ESB Home, and other Open Home Foundation projects.

[SPEAKER_02]: Click the link in the description to learn more. [SPEAKER_02]: This episode is also sponsored by our friends at Apollo Automation, makers of open-source smart home sensors built for the Home Assistant ecosystem. [SPEAKER_02]: They are an official, open home foundation commercial partner, and their devices are built with a local control, privacy, and reliability in mind.

[SPEAKER_02]: Almost everything they offer is works with home assistant and made for ESP home certified, giving you full control and flexibility right out of the box. [SPEAKER_02]: And the best part, they build in the open working directly with the community to create sensors that people actually need.

[SPEAKER_02]: If you're deep into home assistant or just getting started, definitely check them out at ApolloAutomation.com. [SPEAKER_02]: Steve, thank you so much for joining us today as I mentioned. [SPEAKER_02]: You are another person in the upside down land down here. [SPEAKER_02]: Australia and New Zealand share a lot of standards.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be sharing a lot of people back and forth across the ditch. [SPEAKER_02]: So I've always, I love when it's not... [SPEAKER_02]: an American or European on the podcast because I can then I've got something coming right I know the frustrations are dealing with standards and stuff and I suspect that's a lot of your background too so I'd like to hear a bit about yourself and I've got you here into a home assistant and I've got a lot of motion today.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, thanks Phil, thanks Roy. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, definitely share a lot of those great things and not so great things frustrations but [SPEAKER_00]: Mike background is, I've been in the IT game for about 33 years now, I started pretty early and I'm pretty late in life now. [SPEAKER_00]: So at the moment, I like to consult for, I'm in the central North Island of New Zealand and so kind of as normal techies we kind of have our home labs and self-hosted and so that's where I've kind of been in that for many, many years and I wasn't [SPEAKER_00]: Probably about 10 years ago around that 2016 kind of mark, I had my first 4A into that.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, which wasn't in home system to begin with, that was just like any other Kiwi-blook, any other kind of standard beginner, which was Toyosmart devices, and it was what actually happened was in 2016, I ended up having a my goalbladder going into the hospital for my goalbladder, which is great.

[SPEAKER_00]: went in there and but I came out with a hard and fiction. [SPEAKER_00]: So Indo basically have in a few months off work. [SPEAKER_00]: And while those few months were to be honest fantastic from a recent relaxation, it was very frustrating because it's like cool. [SPEAKER_00]: The wife was going to work, the kids were going to school and others are watching, hey, life left on and that's you know, you've been a bit of a [SPEAKER_00]: You know, the the father and me is going or that's just money getting thrown out the window here.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I reckon I fixed this besides, you know, obviously the crack in the whips not helping. [SPEAKER_00]: I just feel like I'm just constantly walking around. [SPEAKER_00]: So, right, while I'm off, I just, you know, walk around bunnings or mighty, you know, you know, those kind of, I get home depot to Euro and kind of places.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And just picked up, well, this looks good, this looks good. [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, it's like, oh, cause it's fantastic. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got some smart lights and smart, smart plugs now. [SPEAKER_00]: and it's like, oh, cool, I could do everything for my phone, which is cool, but you know, no one else wanted to do anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I just went down and tricked out, you know, every single room. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, just not knowing what I couldn't do, so all lights throughout the house, I mean, quite often you find it. [SPEAKER_00]: The kids, what are you reason, you know, they live in the dark. [SPEAKER_00]: So the lights will be off for ages, and then all of a sudden, the week later, they turn them on and they start flashing at you trying to re-adopt and what's going on.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so there's just been offers a line. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, and it was a guess room to that kind of thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So you know, got the the in laws come and stay and next thing and I rock, where I'm going to be, why is the lights flashing at us? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, hold on a second, get the air about read, don't.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, oh, man, it has to be a bit of a bit of a way for this, but it kind of started me in that in that piece right of like. [SPEAKER_00]: Because in the IT side of things, I might say I'm lazy, I just want to be efficient, you know, automation is fantastic. [SPEAKER_00]: But I never really thought about it at home.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I started going down that path and then I was like, okay, what can I do? [SPEAKER_00]: And as most of us have to start off with, you know, I've got five kids, a little bit of mirror adults now, but I've only got one at home, but back then, you know, had probably four of them still there.

[SPEAKER_00]: And all my money, all the [SPEAKER_00]: and so I jumped on Dixness or, you know, Dixness is the fill. [SPEAKER_00]: It's I think it's now a coconut thing. [SPEAKER_02]: I was going to say, yeah, Dix, yeah, it's all. [SPEAKER_02]: Dix myth, yeah, got put out by coconut and now there are stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's, you know, get there and again, it's two year, two year, two year, and it's like, I think, I was just watching, I was thinking, how can I just, more smarter, and then probably it was around that [SPEAKER_00]: 2018's I kind of lived with a couple of years, right? [SPEAKER_00]: I'd be like, hey, I'll get some haters and everything's got to be smart I was in a two-year system actually probably actually 2017 was my next piece which was that really got me excited was My garage door.

[SPEAKER_00]: I had to replace my garage door opener [SPEAKER_00]: And just a local kind of, you know, keyweigh, garage door, nope, no, so it's not Chamberlain or anything on those lines. [SPEAKER_00]: I still had, I still had, I still had the luxury of dry context. [SPEAKER_00]: So it was like, okay, well, replace that, but I didn't have enough remotes for what I wanted, you know, kids have them for off-school and that kind of bits and pieces.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, how do I, you know, how do I get that unlock? [SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: I jumped on LA Express Vist on my kind of been on there and I grabbed this little $15 E-re-link or two years, so it was just a little $15, you know, since which had the read switch and get that into smart toy app and then it's like, oh cool, I can actually start doing things around, you know, a location, so when I'm coming in, you know, it'll [SPEAKER_00]: which was kind of good, but we live on a parade.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we've got another street nearby. [SPEAKER_00]: And what would happen is I would leave, for say, I'll find, I'm going to walk around the block. [SPEAKER_00]: I'd go for a walk, the garage door would close, but then we're not come back around on the other side. [SPEAKER_00]: The block was still within my race.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the kids at Tech's Mill of Wife can text me, go, why is that going store open as like, or I come walk around and it's like, I should, the garage door's open. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's like, oh man, gotta be something [SPEAKER_00]: And now it's kind of when I got into that whole home assistant piece where I was like, I'm going to be doing this better.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've got to look at something and I want to get away from Matt's because it's only me using the apps and either I'm going to like kid to say, can you tell the light on for me? [SPEAKER_00]: Because again, smart bulbs, not switches. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm scared of electricity, so I wasn't ever going to go into that.

[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't really know what you could have couldn't do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I never seen anything like that for New Zealand. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's got to be a bit away, so it's like maybe I can build something myself, just see that I'll be really crud and then I'll do some free search first and I still open have and which is, you know, Windows based and I saw the home system which was, you know, not Windows based and run this based.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because in my IT realm, I'm on Microsoft shop, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So I hadn't really touched Linux or anything along those at that point in time. [SPEAKER_00]: I went through as I asked, so I've been here probably about 50 minutes playing with this and I'm not interested in this at that point in time, so, oh, look, let me just try this.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I had a, because of my home labs, I had an actually deal, 380, you know, chewing up out here. [SPEAKER_00]: I am talking about my kids, you know, you can be running a light bulb on and I've got a, I've got a, a two, you know, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, [SPEAKER_00]: sitting sitting in my garage, just soaking up the power with also wreck, wrecking out netters and the likes of us like, yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: So what do I say not as I do, kind of a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So I spun up a VM and I put home assistant on straight away as like a power that I was like, okay, you know, I'm not really sure what I'm doing following some guides, get into the into the GUI, because that would have been around 2018.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it was at 0.74 roughly, [SPEAKER_00]: And also I saw these things that's going to adopted my TV and all these my Phillips sound bar and all this go, holy crap, I didn't even know that these things were smart, you know, it was just finding this and this is like holy heck, you know, I've got to understand more around this.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where it kind of got started was, you know, from that piece here, it's like, okay, how do I get these things out of two year? [SPEAKER_00]: And that's where I heard around, you know, the test mode, so I was like, cool though, all these P chips at that point, I mean, I was just going for gold, I was going right this bulb, this bulb, this plug, this plug, this plug, [SPEAKER_00]: And then I went to my garage store right now.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, I just do that and it's like, yeah, I've ripped it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like not knowing what I'm doing, I was like, yeah, I'll just be the same as everything else and they just completely broke today. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like, oh, cool, okay, well. [SPEAKER_00]: But that was my first piece into home assistant and it's so exciting and it was like, wow, you know, I was actually for a long time, I was like, oh, forget about all my home lab stuff or building, you know, I had to [SPEAKER_00]: or the home mail and packed active directory and all sorts of stuff going for everyone and it's hard to care about that stuff anymore, they can all go away, you know, play it work.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's a bit of like that first user experience right when you first open up home assistant for the first time and it's there and it is looking around your network and it's sniffing and it finds all these devices and I think now that for us we're just used to that right like it had standard but for a new user that's starting up home assistant for the first time and they go oh wow like look it's found this what is that like what can I do with this it it it's like it unlocks so much potential.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it was, I mean, if I was a non-tech user, I'd probably go, you know, overload of going, that's really cool, but then I don't want to say the cons, but just the the other side, the heavy side of the home assistant, I'd go, oh, it's too much. [SPEAKER_00]: But thankfully, you know, I could look at it.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is getting my wheels turned in enough and I can see so much benefit from this. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll just ignore that piece for now or I'll slow the loan around what that is. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I can then just say, my cousin of this came back and going right cool, I'll pick up more and more and more, you know.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jump to today, you know, I don't actually like living in home assistant, the UI side of things. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I want home assistant to be my brains, [SPEAKER_00]: But I don't want to be living in it. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll ride live in my Apple ecosystem. [SPEAKER_00]: If I'm going to fight something up, I want it to be my, you know, just something nice and simple, you know, that it's the dashboard of Apple home or something along those lines.

[SPEAKER_00]: But you're coming back to that side of it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, wow, you know, what can I do now? [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I've now got a problem because of my stupidity, I've breached my Gary's door at no, [SPEAKER_00]: the relay piece of my garage right now, I've seen a work for everyone else, I didn't care and so I just have to jump out and go through the front door and that kind of stuff because I didn't have anything else.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, let me try and work something out. [SPEAKER_00]: So, I then started going down the DIY path of looking here as like I had a dweenose and I was building some Gary's deweapons from here. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, it's not, they weren't neat workable, those ones there. [SPEAKER_00]: So, like, okay, well, that's going to be a pain.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I moved to my Raspberry Pi. [SPEAKER_00]: Cause I still have a V-Eme at that stage. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I'll move to my Raspberry Pi and, and, you know, I found a, I found a project on GitHub, [SPEAKER_00]: and that got me back up around it and I could integrate it into home assistant is great, you know, and you know, I think I brought it through in QTT and it was like, oh man, this is fantastic from that regard.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I actually go, it's an ecosystem which isn't locked, you know, you can go ahead and just do what you want to do to it. [SPEAKER_00]: A good case and point actually was yesterday, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: It's now just running on ESP32 and I had all these, I'm going to be fancy, I put all these moldy sensors on there.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've got my PIRs, my temperatures, my L2, my present sensor, moldy wave, present sensor, I had all these different things on there. [SPEAKER_00]: My read switch, a couple of weeks ago my read switch snapped off, just finally just had too much and all my other sensors died as I are just doing too much here.

[SPEAKER_00]: So yesterday I was like, oh, I should really fix this. [SPEAKER_00]: So what do I do? [SPEAKER_00]: I've got my ASP exercise, ASP home garage door sensor. [SPEAKER_00]: I've attached to a, I've put in a tilt sensor from, I've got no orders now, but it's a ZIGB tilt sensor. [SPEAKER_00]: And now, and also then attached a matter context sensor.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they're all running and what is one device. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's great, it's like flexibility of what you can do. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's really up here as a limitation for a lot of things. [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess the counterpoint to that though is now you have frost protocol across devices that you need to manage.

[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm guessing for the door window sensor, it's battery powered. [SPEAKER_02]: So you think that you have to replace the batteries on that. [SPEAKER_02]: And then you've got another device that you have to manage. [SPEAKER_02]: Like do you think there's a bit too much overhead in that regard?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you said no, I mean, um, it was great from keeping it into one piece and I'd rather just have it, you know, one box did it all and I'll probably will get to point where I do go back to that, but I could do this so it solves my problem for now. [SPEAKER_00]: So it could be a short time short term effects or it might be made long term, but and I do ultimately want to, you know, get to a point where it is just nearly off the shelf kind of a thing, you know, while I [SPEAKER_00]: you know, have enjoyed tinkering and doing DIY.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm into it stage where I don't want to have to keep maintaining and doing all these things because what is actually failing is the physicality piece, my piece, right? [SPEAKER_00]: It's not the ESP home, it's not, you know, those other things, it's that piece. [SPEAKER_00]: So it solved my problem for now.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not like I went, I went looking for a problem to fix a solution. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, you know, I would've found a solution to fix my problem. [SPEAKER_00]: going to that those products that I'm using so the like the IKEA products right they're using AAA battery so I'm moving away I hate coin cell batteries you know so at least it's the air you know I've got AAA batteries running in there and the tilt sensor aspect around that and there's the new IKEA matter devices you're running sorry yeah so so there are [SPEAKER_00]: I had issues with those because they were my first method of advice was a Zemi smart blind motor and that was a pain but that was because of my IPv6.

[SPEAKER_00]: So my neat work lawyer had to sort that out. [SPEAKER_00]: Once I understood around what that matter piece is in the issues, it's been seamless for me from that regards. [SPEAKER_00]: So yep, call grab those and it's just been working, you know, plug them in there. [SPEAKER_01]: How do you find the IKEA matter products?

[SPEAKER_01]: Because again, I've got some ideas. [SPEAKER_01]: Some of the ideas would be like, the Jew can light bulbs and stuff like that, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, and they're cheap and they work great, but they last like a year or a year and a half, and they die, right? [SPEAKER_01]: How do you find the quality on the matter, sir?

[SPEAKER_00]: So far, I haven't had any issues. [SPEAKER_00]: So what I've got from the IKEA on the meta-ranges, I've got the PIR, I've got the context, [SPEAKER_00]: water leak, you know, and, and, and, and, and, and, and working my lights are coming on as I walk around the hallway, uh, the garage door contacts since and now, you know, it's just now a contact sensor.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's telling me that the group, it's heading that open, open space. [SPEAKER_00]: They're working. [SPEAKER_00]: They adopted fine. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, like I said, kind of like I was having that same brand. [SPEAKER_00]: We know that these any smart as like maybe it's, maybe it's my, uh, new work.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's when I tried to bring the IKEA stuff and around the same time and I had issues. [SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, [SPEAKER_00]: matter itself or it's, you know, so I found out Kate's my issue is I've got to kind of old router and so I had to go do some IPv6 kind of HodgeBodgery around that so sort of all that out and then everything just came to life.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I haven't had any issues rolling at the moment. [SPEAKER_00]: It's still been very early days, you know, January, so what were, you know, four months until it, the battery life's still great, you know, and for the price of it, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that's why I keep going back to those bulbs, because it's like 10, 12 bucks at the end of the day.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, yeah, I can cycle through them a little bit and then I'll still be okay. [SPEAKER_01]: But okay, good enough, it's enough. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it does hit one of my markers, which is the Stingy Dead side of things. [SPEAKER_00]: Because you think, okay, the kids move out and I'll start getting more money.

[SPEAKER_00]: No, the kids heads their own kids. [SPEAKER_00]: So now got grandkids and, you know, so it doesn't need for a little while, [SPEAKER_00]: as I can. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a headset that you mark a kind of thing I'd call cheap, you know, you say now it's not going to be long term. [SPEAKER_00]: If I think that I'm pretty naive, but I still have, you know, an expectation.

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I've had some, uh, the early, uh, son of PIRs and context sensors, which just didn't last for me, you know, and that would cheap at the time. [SPEAKER_00]: So they were the ones which refrustrated me. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, so, but, you know, um, [SPEAKER_00]: Come here to really quickly, though, you know, you're asking about the battery side of things and that's where I've got, you know, one of my integrations as a whole, the battery integration, you know, so the battery notes plus or one of them.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's it, you know, and that's fantastic, because at least I can see, okay, what is this better, you know, very steps there. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, cool. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I, um, if you're looking for a garage door opener, um, and I down here, we can have some limitations on what we can get Amazon generally on sale a lot.

[SPEAKER_02]: Um, they have a mirror garage door opener. [SPEAKER_02]: There's an Apple home kit version, which might be suitable, um, feels I have that integrated into home. [SPEAKER_02]: This is on an Android user. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, [SPEAKER_02]: and it's been rock solid, it comes with its own re-censors, so it's all plugged into its single unit right, so it has an open closed sensor, and just triggers the relay, and hooks into home assistant, and I've got a little NFC card right outside my garage door, tap that that activates the home assistant to then just toggle the garage door going up and down, and it is instant, no delay, and it's Wi-Fi, I generally don't like Wi-Fi devices, but yeah it just works, I've been really happy with it,

[SPEAKER_00]: That's, as I said, you know, this is, this is, this is fixed my problem, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And it is my problem, you know, the wife doesn't care. [SPEAKER_00]: The kids don't care. [SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's only me that cares. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: And no one else uses that NSA sticker except for me. [SPEAKER_02]: If I save those few steps, have you walking side to touch the button that's on the wall? [SPEAKER_02]: That's good for me, but no one else is doing that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I actually had that issue when the kids were going through high school.

[SPEAKER_00]: So my youngest one is now just at high school and he probably won't have that issue. [SPEAKER_00]: He's a little prince in regards. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to be dropped off to school and picked up quite a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: But the other ones, you know, they're bike to them from school.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I get a text, I doubt I can't get inside kind of thing, because my battery on my just the standing one. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, how I'll do this in if see kind of go down that path. [SPEAKER_00]: And I start, I brought a cat for it all. [SPEAKER_00]: And then it's like, [SPEAKER_00]: I really want to do this because it's like, how am I going to go and put this against my, you know, it's like the cladine and all that kind of thing, you know, I have to wear the proof of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So all I did was just brought some cheap RF remotes and the son of RF bridge and just trained them up and went cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Jimmer, that's your remote, you know, helmets, your remote. [SPEAKER_00]: So they had your own remotes, even though it wasn't, and then what I could do is I can go [SPEAKER_00]: Um, they only work between these hours, uh, these days and, you know, or if it's outside of that, I'd get an notification.

[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because it's a good little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really, not that I don't trust them, of course, but they don't need to have access during certain times. [SPEAKER_00]: But pop up and go, cool, hey, you know, oh, either outside they need to go grab the schoolbooks that they forgot about, I'm not home, cool, just going to text you, cool, it's open for you, blah, blah, blah.

[SPEAKER_02]: I also think like tonight by proof to fault, you know, for example, what if they lost the remote or one of their friends has picked up the remote, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Or, yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: And that was a whole kind of side of it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, you know, while it's great to, you know, give give them that you don't want someone, you know, not saying the fear is, but someone picking it up and coming along and just opening the garage door and seeing what's going, what's in there.

[SPEAKER_00]: you know, this where it's also my, it's also my storage of all my IT bits and little bits and pieces, even the roll bits. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, things on there that, you know, you want to protect all whatever, it will pass us your home. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so there's tonight, you know, zero trust basically.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, I have a look at that for that, because again, you know, I do want, that's my ultimate game is, is I don't want to be DIY Steve, you know, too much anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I, [SPEAKER_00]: the way my brain works is I get a bit hyper-focused and then I've had enough. [SPEAKER_00]: I've had so many DIY projects where I've built to 90% of the way and I've gone year cool.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've confirmed the works, I've just lost interest. [SPEAKER_00]: And the same sort of thing as the whole DIY side of it, you know, if I go, oh, actually, I just don't want to give the love and attention anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: So you do want that whole, like, the, you know, the mayor of sea, just dropping run kind of a thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say, if you're feeling very lazy, third reality actually makes a group of opener button thing, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So it literally you take it, you take your garage or open or you stick it in this unit and it just pushes the, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I saw that and look, you know, it's going to be fantastic for certain people's users use a case, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't have a remote to do that with, but I hear what you're saying from that regards. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's just like I looked at it and went, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Because actually this way, the tool centre was on echo, I couldn't think of tool centre as a third reality because I think how much you gave which was fantastic, I've been testing, it's working really well and it's the tool centre was from them and I looked at that and it's not going to fit my need for Mum because they don't have to take the actual remote from, you know, from the [SPEAKER_00]: from the wife's car because we don't, on the wall, it's just a button.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like you know how you get some of these like have garages and all that kind of stuff where it's like the actual remote is a button as well. [SPEAKER_00]: Mine's just like a little, little press button so it wouldn't work, but again it's going to be use of cases which would think, oh my god, where's that been all my life?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I had an extra one because I have, again, two vehicles, but one of them we park outside, one of them we park inside, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, I had the two garage door openers, and I'm like, yep, second one, perfect. [SPEAKER_01]: The same thing they, they, uh, we picked one up at CES from them and, uh, that they gave me.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I was just like, okay, a beautiful one. [SPEAKER_01]: This guy said, works great. [SPEAKER_01]: Love it. [SPEAKER_02]: So you actually got it working, right? [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm interested in another few issues like trying to get people like, how do we get this reality to do it?

[SPEAKER_01]: So what I realized is as I was testing this, like it was on my desk, whatever, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So but I had the tilt sensor on my desk. [SPEAKER_01]: So it always just detect that the tilt was, [SPEAKER_01]: like flat, like I think it always thought it was open, but so that was off.

[SPEAKER_01]: When I stuck the tilts and saw the garage, it started working properly. [SPEAKER_01]: Only thing I find is I have to press a twice. [SPEAKER_01]: So I have to like do the opening and like whatever if it's open, I have to like hit a twice and then close hit a twice. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure why that is, but it works, so that's not bad.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, like unless you've got a built-in, you know, something to that part of the ecosystem, I think you're always going to have those issues where, you know, I have it. [SPEAKER_00]: So like I might want to open up my garage door, a crack just to get you, you know, the key we someone's can be a bit like, okay, they're not really, but no, I was straight in like, but, you know, we can get us some hot days, and so you want to crack your door open a bit.

[SPEAKER_00]: And... [SPEAKER_00]: and therefore it says it's opening all closing because sometimes it gets confused and it doesn't know if it's open, if it's closed and then so you click it again thinking that you know you're closing it but it's actually opening it. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's where again, yesterday where I went right cool, I'm now adding and these different sense from different ecosystems and how many of them I've created from logic to go.

[SPEAKER_00]: If I haven't registered that, it's had the open sense and [SPEAKER_00]: after 15 seconds of whatever it is because they have a long-takish open, it is going to I am going to say it is in the open state so no matter what and then again so I will build where it knows where it is last opened or closed so I can go okay well do I need to do a double press or single press you know you can put that on I am just that is just I will be engineering a problem of something it is just a simple case you have press a button if it is still open and three you know 30 seconds or whatever which obviously means that it has gone back [SPEAKER_00]: I'll press it again to go back down, kind of thing, but yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, if you're looking to upgrade your smartphone, you can't go past the zoos. [SPEAKER_02]: The zoos have released their brand new Zwave Long Range RGBW dimmer. [SPEAKER_02]: You can now automate 12 to 24 volt LED strips with full brightness and color control. [SPEAKER_02]: It's designed to easily install behind your memory wall switch, or you compare it with the Zwave scene controller for more flexibility.

[SPEAKER_02]: You can use the RGBW dimmer for accent lighting under cabinets, behind screens, or wherever [SPEAKER_02]: Zusa also an official works with home assistant partner, helping WCU by providing long-range devices for testing the home assistant connect ZWA2 radio, so you know you're in friendly hands.

[SPEAKER_02]: Zusa offers a range of affordable and innovative devices, including water leak sensors, water valve controllers, smart plugs, and seen controllers. [SPEAKER_02]: There's then 78 high power relay allows you to control and monitor higher load appliances up to 40 amps, which is perfect for pool pumps, air compressors, and other high power outlets.

[SPEAKER_02]: So for the best prices on all Zeus products, head over to the smartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_02]: That's the smartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to pivot a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: I know we've talked a lot about the technology, what you're doing, and so on, but you have a blog around a lot of this and you're doing some stuff on YouTube and, you know, how has that world?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's interesting because, like, I've always seen on an introvert, but I think I'm just one of these, you know, I don't have a big social battery, and I'm very, you know, I don't like kind of being that would. [SPEAKER_00]: But, [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a Tinker, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So I've made these little, you know, I think I'm not an engineer in Tinker, so I haven't built all these fancy, you know, huge things, but just enough, and I just, I've quite modest about it, but the wife's gone, well, you should tell people about this, tell people about that, like, I've got to, through my, through my, through my job, my head a client who had a order lick, right above the computer, and basically the insurance job, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, now I was getting rid of it all, so to Stumpo, you know, we obviously just, [SPEAKER_00]: Destroyed everything they need to happen, but I they had a 32 inch monitor which had water all down through it So I went like I'm just gonna take that and just left it for a few months and I'll try to see if it works Next hey, it actually fired on so I stripped that down Turned it on portrait and it's now and put a frame around it [SPEAKER_00]: I had a racetrack pile in the back of it and I was running in the Kiosk mode where it's running our wallboard so I run Magic Mirror 2 in the background.

[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a kind of thing and those kind of things that I've built and honestly the lights come on come off day to touch anything and the aircons and all that sort of stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: And people come around, you know, Joe, my wife has friends around and they go, oh, what happened? [SPEAKER_00]: What's that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why did the lights come on when I was walking through the hallway and that kind of stuff? [SPEAKER_00]: Steve, can you come in here for a second? [SPEAKER_00]: Can you tell them how to do it? [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, no, not really. [SPEAKER_00]: Because, you know, don't look at my closet because it's, you know, it's just wise and all sorts of stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: And and they went, oh man, it was so cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Can you teach my husband or can you do, you know, can you show me how to do this? [SPEAKER_00]: Is it some basic stuff? [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, I kind of wanted it and this is, [SPEAKER_00]: last year where I was going, I need to start getting another hobby because I was really printing, you know, fear button.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then yeah, again, my brain just goes, I can't bother anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: So they just sit there for nine months or whatever it says. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's like, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't I do something where I can kind of hopefully give some of my knowledge back to the people and go, I'll just start doing some blogs and I can let's go, hey look look at this, this is how you do some basic stuff and my goal was to kind of build three streams which was the beginner intermediate and advanced, I'm not saying I'm advanced, but just kind of things, where the beginner was like, because I've got Google home, yes I've got, um, [SPEAKER_00]: I've got the Apple home pods and they do different things right and I'd rather actually replace more for home Apple ecosystem where Apple phones.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I was like, okay, I'm just going to should do the basic how to's and that was my kind of goal originally was like, oh, I just do that for the beginner side and here's some smart stuff which works with those. [SPEAKER_00]: That was where I was kind of wanting to hidden as like I started there as like, okay, [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a lot of little logic, you know, automation and things where if someone wants to start home assistant, this is how they can start that piece.

[SPEAKER_00]: I, and so, okay, that's my next piece. [SPEAKER_00]: Been me being very naive, you know, here I am going, I'll do some blogs around that. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, well, [SPEAKER_00]: I can't, off the shelf, there's really, everything off the shelf nearly is cloud-based to your base, all that kind of side of things, so like, and I, by everything, you know, I was buying everything through the alley express at that point in time, so okay, we've got this so many, I know there's so many vendors out there.

[SPEAKER_00]: What can we get globally that we can actually start using? [SPEAKER_00]: Why, you know, it's start making more use of the Amazon's and even going direct, so, [SPEAKER_00]: That's where I'll reach out to some, you know, some of these vendors and things like that and, you know, I say the field earlier on that Justin from Apollo was the first one he went there and it's fantastic, you know, I hope he was a journey, he's some stuff, which is awesome, but then it's like, okay, well, that's not actually [SPEAKER_00]: solving my initial problem of, I just want to give it to the friends of family, kind of people, the ones who just want to get started, it's like, you're by Apple HomePod, now what?

[SPEAKER_00]: I've got to buy this really expensive devices just to get into the system more. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I'm buying saying it says, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: Um, that was the kind of the concept around that and then very much, I'd say, I look here some stuff and, uh, you know, we're going to read this guide and it's like, I mean, it took me so much work to stir, you know, write a guide and then someone goes, let's put on YouTube as I go, I'll do some basics on the end and it's like, actually to get to my end goal, which is to get to that whole.

[SPEAKER_00]: The KiwiBloek, what is available in New Zealand aspect, I kind of need to jump towards some steps and go, I've got to really kind of look at the global market, kind of thing go, you know, go to the masses and then that will allow me to then come back later on to go cool, this is the Kiwi Corner piece, this is what works in the New Zealand and so or actually get to even better which is like hey, while I'm talking about home assistant, while I'm talking about that, you don't have to.

[SPEAKER_00]: There are some things which make your life better, even just doing these basics and which then might get these, you know, some younger ones or even old ones or even, you know, who go all actually, I can, I've just heard about these, you know, these, um, home-sacen grains or whatever, whatever, whatever, you know, and they go, cool, we're, we're now built on that and then they start going down their own path where I was, you know, years and years ago, um, the next generation sort of speak.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm kind of having to go stick in the intermediate space at the moment and as I get things that you know kind of come along like the reo links you know are being fantastic from that, which is a first phrase into that kind of piece. [SPEAKER_00]: So the blog has kind of taken a little bit of a back step.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've only been doing it since I think January the blog was like to see and [SPEAKER_00]: video, and look, I'm still crawling, you know, I'm infant, I've actually had Simon says home assistant, he reached out to me after my first couple of videos and it's actually through again through Justin, he's been fantastic through Apollo.

[SPEAKER_00]: He said, hey, this guy here, have you heard of him and he's introduced us and we basically talk every week or two weeks, you know, and he's wealth of knowledge and regards of, how do you do this, how do you do that? [SPEAKER_00]: because my YouTube set-up is this, right? [SPEAKER_00]: I record, I don't have anything to say.

[SPEAKER_02]: I've just, yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: That's why I'm doing my, so I've got a $12 LED I've just put up there, because it's late. [SPEAKER_00]: And everything's off my phone, so it's, and I've got a seven year old piece piece, you know? [SPEAKER_00]: It's getting there, right? [SPEAKER_00]: You know what?

[SPEAKER_01]: Again, we've had a lot of creators on our show as well, and one of the things is it doesn't take a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: One of the reasons we did that is just to help inspire people to actually do this kind of thing to actually become creators and also show us what you're doing that's cool.

[SPEAKER_01]: A big part of that is, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you just start, you got to start somewhere, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So you don't need, you know, $3,000 camera, and I'll just, you got an iPhone use it. [SPEAKER_01]: You got an Android use it, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's, it's, it's basics. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, I don't, I, I see too much.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't want to become, you know, go down that path of spending thousands, thousands, and tell us, look, will I upgrade over time? [SPEAKER_00]: potentially hopefully, you know, make things more easy because even what I've got at the moment, it works, but it's, you know, it's so frustrating because I'll do recording and then I've got to take it off, so I've got more storage and mine's fine and it's not the stabbling time.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I hopefully I'll get to a better setup at some stage, but my main focus is just going, I've got some sort of knowledge. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's going to be, the needs some people is going to be above some people, but in my career, I've always wanted to, I want to, I want to, [SPEAKER_00]: Make sure that I'm an advisor, I am a mentor.

[SPEAKER_00]: So all this junior engineers right throughout, I've had the leadership roles and I'm currently in a consultant role, I like imparting knowledge. [SPEAKER_00]: If I can help someone gain some value, now, what they want to do with it, that's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: It's always going to be the best knowledge, no.

[SPEAKER_00]: But if I can help broaden people, then that's great. [SPEAKER_00]: And then it's one trying to take over this point here, [SPEAKER_00]: I just want people to go, oh, actually, that's ignited a little flame net, while I might not want to go down that path, I could do that, but to a different way, or actually, this is really cool.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'll follow this, and it might get to value from it, so that's the goal, right? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not, people are saying, you know, you're just working up to three years, like, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, [SPEAKER_00]: to be honest, there's actually more pain in the camp, you know pain, then it actually is it's somethings.

[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, as long as it's, I only want to show things that show value to people. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's, that's, that's the genuine piece of me and I hope I can, I hope I can hold onto that core. [SPEAKER_02]: and moving up, like, going beyond that, like, the freak year. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think, can be a burden too, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Like, a lot of companies will reach out and say, oh, you know, we want this to live by this date, right? [SPEAKER_02]: And then it becomes a whole management thing, and they want to be able to say, and you have to truly audience, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, we're not, we're not going, you know, there's no editorial here, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to give us something, we're going to give us, you know, the honest opinions. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure. [SPEAKER_00]: And I've had a couple of loads of little things [SPEAKER_00]: I don't need that stress, so I know I don't want to cut my nose off, but it's like cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we'll look a bit later on because I just don't have that.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't have to have the capability, you know, capacity, I should say, you know, we've all got full-time careers unfortunately, you know, there's Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: So going back to again, I can't say enough with Paul and Justin, you know, Justin, he sent me so much gear and he's got another one you think from it.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I just want to, you know, same sort of thing in regards of, [SPEAKER_00]: You can't back and you feed back and there's something that I fed back to in which words are of A minor thing and then a cool will take that back R&D, but I did it a kind of thing But you know he's gonna there's no expectations from this.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is you know if you if you find a good Then you're gonna go and spread the word aspect of it. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't need someone who's gonna go or you have to say this this and this Cool right my script for me and get someone else to do it, pin [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's weird, I mean, Phil and I are both big fans of, again, of a college in general, but also just in terms of their whole, like, hey, we're listening.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're doing this for the community, and we really like to, you know, we take the input in from the community and we output what the community wants, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And that's huge. [SPEAKER_01]: And again, you don't see a ton of vendors that listen. [SPEAKER_01]: right and you know I I find that that's a very unique way of doing it and along with the open home fetish and with home assistant right again very community driven very values driven in that front so which I think is very cool but uh oh yeah definitely you know um look [SPEAKER_00]: with their ethos and the way that they approach things, you know, they've got more loyalty, you know, from that regards of, is everything going to be the gear?

[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not going to be all the gear, but you know what, we're at suits, I'll be, you go, hey, you guys need to check this out, you need to check, you know, how power that for this or whatever, again, you know, that may not be for the entry level kind of side of things, but [SPEAKER_00]: The community, that's been fantastic.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's going from strength strength. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's been only a couple of years with them. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that Trevor and Justin have just been on their own for a bit. [SPEAKER_00]: And now they're two years where they've had some staff. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think they're going, it's great.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I love seeing about the community. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's not just a commercial commercial commercial of people selling things. [SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes it looks like that when you get a, because I've got LinkedIn as well. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think it gets very commercialized.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's very kind of, you know, rubber faces, you know, selling, selling, selling, but coming near, I think I've only ever seen Justin Trigger in the team post-community-based things which are fantastic, you know, about celebration and about growth. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what this is, ultimately, in the end, [SPEAKER_02]: Now, bring it back to your home assistance at a little bit.

[SPEAKER_02]: I have some questions around how you're running your home automation system. [SPEAKER_02]: You mentioned before that you use Apple home as your interface in time assistance is the brains. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you find that there are issues with compatibility between Apple home and home Mrs and I don't home Mrs and it has a whole bunch of different device classes that maybe Apple home has a subset of, have you found like the big gaps that you can't bridge between the two?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I want an ecosystem, I want a smart home that's smart, right? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to go around pressing buttons, open dashboards, [SPEAKER_00]: So if I do, it's for something basic. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything else has to have some logic around it. [SPEAKER_00]: If I walk in a room, if I'm in there, the light, you know, this presents.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the lights come on. [SPEAKER_00]: If it's certain time, then, you know, or certain temperature, the e-con comes on or off or whatever it needs to happen, I don't want to be touching things. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just a burden as well for when, you know, you go to someone else's house where you go to a hotel or something and you go, you stay in there in the dark, go, why the lights not coming up?

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's right, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: But so when I bring up my dashboards, my home, it is a very simple task, lights on, lights offers, you know, if I want to do something custom from, hey, look, you know, I want to turn it up turn it down kind of a thing or outside each case, and this, you know, how am I going to store, you know?

[SPEAKER_00]: you know, hey lady, over my garage door kind of thing and it'll go and do it for me, or whatever, you know, it's not actually restricted around, around from that regard, but if I really do need to get into it, I mean, there's definitely shortcomings, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So there's things we're like, even the e-conditioner can only do so many controls, but it does enough for my wife and my kids or [SPEAKER_00]: If I want to go and actually set something custom, yeah, okay, I can just go into the the the home assistant dashboard and to do that, but normally it's just it's it's 148 the scene to what we want, right, it's the age 20 kind of rule.

[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I just don't want to be living in dashboards, so it's it's it's that's if I've got it, if I have to open a dashboard, then I want to kind of look at it going. [SPEAKER_00]: How do I not do that because I like everyone right, I went down many parts of going. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to be an audio file kind of a guy.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want to be a dashboards guy. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I've heard you run talk about many times there. [SPEAKER_00]: You've got, you know, your bubble cards and all the stuff, right? [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you've got nice pretty dashboards that you work on them with it. [SPEAKER_00]: I start going then that path in, again, the brain just goes, I get 90% in the area and I think I can't be bothered.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's only for me, my wife, the kids, they don't want to use the app. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, so then it's like, okay, well, I've got some old Android tablets, then there's one door. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to go destroy a wall, I want to go do all that, and who's actually going to use it?

[SPEAKER_00]: And I've gone down this place again. [SPEAKER_00]: Get into the point of execution to, you know, design, design, design, plan, plan, plan, plan, executing and I go, put my execution as for it's just going to go cause more maintenance. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's actually, you know what, drop it, forget about it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't need it, it's just going to be, it's going to be something that someone walks in and goes, oh, what's it for, and then I'm going to have to keep maintaining it. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's not really worth it. [SPEAKER_00]: I'd rather just have something that lives in breeze with us, you know, hopefully I'll get there one day.

[SPEAKER_02]: I 100% agree. [SPEAKER_02]: I think if you've done highwood emotion correctly, then there should need to be a need for it dashboard. [SPEAKER_02]: And at the end of the day, what are you needing to change? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I've had the exact same thought processes, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I've actually got a tablet on the goal randomly somewhere.

[SPEAKER_02]: My wife said, what do we need a tablet on the wall for like who's going to go up and and touch anything on there right like we have the apps on our phones if we need to change anything like a scene or something we can go up and we just play our phones and do it that way. [SPEAKER_00]: I think who's going to touch it toddlers.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: So, which we both have and it's like, well, no, they just yell at to the smile assistant now, like he likes the little Amazon account, please play this music and then you get stuck with that music. [SPEAKER_01]: My love's playing with it while he eats and because it's again, it's on the kitchen, like it's on a kitchen counter and he likes eating on his like tower standing up, whatever.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And now so now it is currently literally right now is filled with yogurt on the screen. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, it's got it. [SPEAKER_02]: Is it a yogurt or spaghetti, something that's very hard to clean, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, my, you know, I've got the grain kids that come around.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: So the youngest one that need to your old. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's so cute to see them going, you know, a Google, a Google kind of thing, you know, the what they're kind of saying. [SPEAKER_00]: And what you're, yeah, but the next thing you know is, it's, you know, a misinterpreted or what they've asked for.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty good what they're playing the music and stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: But again, it's like, okay, [SPEAKER_00]: I always want to basically solve a problem rather than have a solution and there's some of the hard stuff about coming back to getting gear, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Got these windows.

[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, it's looking to go, okay, well now I've got a solution, I've got to find a problem. [SPEAKER_00]: But there are some things which I can make into some stories like one of my previous recent previous video, we've got a couple of plants which really seem to me into my [SPEAKER_00]: uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh

[SPEAKER_00]: uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh [SPEAKER_00]: That's cool, it's got a little LED on it, but the LED's not going to be present and I don't want to have it, okay, maybe I should then show the wife how to use a dashboard on the phone.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, no, you know, I don't want to be there. [SPEAKER_00]: So how do I make my home tell me these things? [SPEAKER_00]: So a number of years ago, I made a DIY liffafane, it's a cube, which is basically, you know, I've got liffafane photos of our grandkids and the family and that kind of stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I made it for the wife. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just a W LED in the back end. [SPEAKER_00]: and it sits there and it's like well that's a perfect indicator. [SPEAKER_00]: So now we're the I'll figure out where the plant needs to be the optimum the optimum location and lighting and you know watering but when it does need water the Lithuanians blew so and then when it's got too much water you know the Lithuanians read and then when it's when the plants find also the plants since it's green [SPEAKER_00]: And then it's like, well, now I move to another plant going, okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: So now the wife gets, she's just hit me up two days ago, because I've only had it in there just a little while. [SPEAKER_00]: And she goes, blue means I need to water something, doesn't it's like, yes. [SPEAKER_00]: And so she walked around, so because I've added a cup of this plants into a couple of others.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she can now go and look, go, and I count as quickly look around the plants and go, oh, look, because the PLT one's got a little LED on that size, is it's green? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's not that one. [SPEAKER_00]: It's blue. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that one needs water. [SPEAKER_00]: because we're in a tourist for forgetting things.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I could have an announcement to say, hey, the plant needs watering, but once I remember that last next time, but this, because it sits there in the lounge. [SPEAKER_00]: So again, these are the, this is how we can make a smart home, be smart and work for us, you know, and it kind of be part of the family side of speak.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I do think I, my own home have notification for T, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like we walk into the kitchen and the Amazon Echo will say, dishwasher's clean. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: You're like, really, so I probably don't need that notification. [SPEAKER_02]: Like we're going to get clean dishes out.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to get emptied. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, and yeah, or we're just going to forget about it anyway. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: But I do, I've always been a fan of colors for notifications and I think I always blew when there's a flood sensor that's gone off, green for when the washing machine is done.

[SPEAKER_02]: So I think there's use cases for that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, definitely. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, and you talk about the leaks since I've got one where the pin on where it is around the house, the lights, if there is, do some don't have colour change lights, right? [SPEAKER_00]: But where they do, the light will go blue in that area and there will be announcements saying, there's a leak detected in the laundry.

[SPEAKER_00]: It leaked detected. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Under the packaging. [SPEAKER_00]: So, excuse me, I might not hear it, but at least then I can see, oh, it's blue. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm following the blue light, so to speak. [SPEAKER_00]: And I hear what you say about the notification fatigue, it's all about French cases, so the drier's finished.

[SPEAKER_00]: Cool, it reminds me of the drier's finished because I might not increase crisp pants because yeah, it's drier instead of the line, but winter I can now a lot of work, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: on the Taurus again, I hate putting motion on the line, so I use a drier, but the drier's smart enough where I can actually, it's literally like so, I've got a hex integration for that, so at least I can see how long till when it's finished and when it's if you finish, so I'll do a little notification just the once kind of thing, because originally it was every team minutes to remind me, it's like you know what, there's just too much, just the once kind of as we, in all my phone, [SPEAKER_00]: But the one is the washing machine.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've just done one recently and we're at the washing machine is the tourist. [SPEAKER_00]: If you don't change it obviously, think it's thinking it will close. [SPEAKER_00]: So that is repeatable. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I want to be repeatable until the lid's open. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's about picking and choosing what you want and what you need, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: What's the brand of dry you got to get the integration happening in this system? [SPEAKER_00]: The LITRA Lux. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a LITRA Lux. [SPEAKER_02]: That's great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they had that issue a year ago, because basically, when I put it in there, it was like, oh, smart.

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, same sort of thing was like, oh, cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Smart, the smart, that smart, just sees the smart. [SPEAKER_00]: It just uses it. [SPEAKER_00]: In other words, it uses its own vendor app, right? [SPEAKER_00]: There's like, man, and then I came across the, [SPEAKER_00]: Electrolex life or something or whatever it's called and as like, well, that's actually, you know, it's works and then then they lock down the ecosystem, the APIs for a while and then I think someone I reverse engineered it again or they opened up the company, but so start working again.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look, you know, and at this part of the the pains of that, you know, we talked about, you know, vendors before of the big commercial vendors where they go, well, we want you to be using [SPEAKER_00]: our apps, our subscriptions. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, cool, I've just gone to spend 1500 bucks on the appliance.

[SPEAKER_00]: Don't make me lock in for X amount per year or whatever for this. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's, it make me a loyal customer rather than going, man, when that comes up, I'm replacing it, you know, all replace it earlier and give the give that to my kids, you know, kind of thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's, it's, [SPEAKER_00]: I need to do more homework because I'm really notoriously bad at going. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I like, when I'm buying things for myself, I will plan, you know, I will just research research research and not buy, you know, it's like, no, it's good to upgrade.

[SPEAKER_00]: But when I'm with the wife out there, you know, she'll see something wizzy bells and it's not her fault. [SPEAKER_00]: It's, you know, I'm, I'm a pleaser right, so I was like, you're called it's by that. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually, you know, I didn't research enough if it's actually going to suit us.

[SPEAKER_00]: Thankfully, a lot of stuff, just like my Econ, I got a really good deal through family who's a sparkie and they did the Econ stuff, but I was locked in with the Shiba. [SPEAKER_00]: And so that cool, okay, then stored at the smart module for it. [SPEAKER_00]: But again, I don't know if you've either got a Shiba heat pump and looked at the wrap.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was sluggish, it was slow, it was crap. [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, and as like me and so search and search and finally, you know, after while the cheaper hex was zero as well, which brought that in time assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: So that just load off my shoulders right, it's so relief.

[SPEAKER_00]: But again, then you run through the risk of, hey, you know, you got your monthly updates of home assistant, a break. [SPEAKER_00]: So hex integration. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's right. [SPEAKER_00]: A little quick. [SPEAKER_00]: So like I've find you in now, and then when the home assistant starts the.

[SPEAKER_00]: The hex integrator, the two hex integrations needs to restart. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've had to create a little automation, which just restart. [SPEAKER_00]: So after a minute of home system being up, it's just a little quick like there's a bit kind of here, because it's unofficial. [SPEAKER_00]: So but it gives me the ability to get it into the, so which is great from there regards.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I find like frustrating around like hacks in general in that. [SPEAKER_02]: You are at risk of one day, and official components too. [SPEAKER_02]: But one day, like other trucks may go, you know what? [SPEAKER_02]: Disappearize done, you're restricted. [SPEAKER_02]: And then you're $1,500 in the hole for a new dryer, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: I do like the LG stuff at the moment, because they're actually LG themselves and they're contributing back into the official home, Mrs. [SPEAKER_02]: Integration. [SPEAKER_02]: There is also being a community one. [SPEAKER_02]: I think someone independently credited a community integration for the LG stuff.

[SPEAKER_02]: I use LG stuff they're not sponsoring anything, but I like that that's an example of a company there working with the [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think Macy said in the open home, I think she's saying from memory that they're looking to have an online register, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So why it'd be great to actually have that whole for the community going.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have to do the homework. [SPEAKER_00]: Someone's done it for me. [SPEAKER_00]: What sets, you know, like the black out of the database of Tasmoder and the device database, you can identify a database. [SPEAKER_00]: And while that's kind of a work and promote, but it worked the main team, and look, I take my hats off to a lot of these developers sort of created these hex integrations who have gone and reversed engineered, who've gone and found the APIs have done, or they're, man, you know, you guys are our saviors.

[SPEAKER_00]: But it'd be really awesome if we could just give that list of going cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, if these people are willing to keep, you know, open up to the community, you know, these, these commercial, maybe not partners, but these commercial entities will support you. [SPEAKER_00]: Because you're making our life easier and we want to support that, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, that's the ethos of the community of give back, you know, kind of, kind of aspect. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to despite saying I have, you know, found a workaround for this, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: You know, up you evil corp kind of a kind of a thing, you know, I want to be supporting those ones like that LG have been more open.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's ones which have just gone, not interested, you know, closed systems too bad, you know, take downs and all that. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, well, you know, you're cutting yes, I know I understand it's a very small portion of your market, but it's a little too base, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: So be great if we could get that point of having a device register of going, these are the officials, these are what works with, you know, and what capacity, and I think we're getting there, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're literally building one right now. [SPEAKER_02]: Now what is your future plans for homes is what haven't you automated jet that you are [SPEAKER_00]: My presence, I'm really happy with my presence. [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't do presence in the bedrooms.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like cool, the kids aren't interested, right? [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I tried that and it's like that. [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't want to annoy my wife by actually wants to go for a nannin app or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't need lights coming on or doing different things. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's like I could do all these bed sensors and all that kind of stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: No, I just won't worry about doing that. [SPEAKER_00]: These buttons, I've just got buttons around for that. [SPEAKER_00]: I'd probably like to move away from more of the spoils because I feel like I'm a oriental, you know, I've, we've owned this house for 14 years and it's, you know, I don't know why, I think we had a skits of Frenica Sparky or electrician who built this, who did the thing wiring because I've got neutral to a lot of the light switches, I've got some which don't have neutral, some are basically piggyback on other light switches, some of what they call triple plage, which is a neutral speck at the, at the bulb, [SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to get to a point where it's going cool.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to be tactile, you can just turn on and off lights. [SPEAKER_00]: We don't look at me different, but we have a cleaner come in just for a couple of hours. [SPEAKER_00]: Just to do a bit of reset, which is great. [SPEAKER_00]: That's really fantastic for that. [SPEAKER_00]: And that goes through, oh, the lights on.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because they've walked in. [SPEAKER_00]: They don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, I'll turn it off. [SPEAKER_00]: So come in at five o'clock at night, especially now it's in dark and light and soft. [SPEAKER_00]: This is like, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: I just want it to be, that's the piece where as a friction point for me and again, I don't know what I need so this light and I don't want to then start having all these different plates around the place, you know, light plates of different switches.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd like to tidy that all up and get to a point where I find a really good regulated [SPEAKER_00]: that I can then get, you know, someone just, even if it's just checked over look or if it needs to be certified and sold and get that done or those different areas, you know, that's something I'd like to tidy up.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I've been talking about presence, you know, I had presence, excuse me, around the whole house of originally PIR sensors. [SPEAKER_00]: they agree some places, not others, yes, we all know that and and and you and sometimes they need to be there, but they need to other present so I've had him in my senses for the last few years.

[SPEAKER_00]: But that all been do I wise, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like me, ESP 8 to 6, 6 ESP 32's building on an LD 2014's kind of thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, work fantastic, you know, but you spin it, tweaking, tweaking, it just works, that's great. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, then it's like, okay, well, it's an ugly 3D printers, you know, case, because my, what I've created, either I've added PIS instances into it and all that.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then, [SPEAKER_00]: I buy out-express, you know, maybe not the best ESP boards, and they die. [SPEAKER_00]: And so now it's where I've not been replacing them with actual robust ones. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've got a third reality one sitting in some places. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got the ESP, the Apollo Automation ones, and for the PIRs, I'm sticking with anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's got a run, has to run AA, AAA batteries, kind of things. [SPEAKER_00]: But that's where I was probably just tidy up. [SPEAKER_00]: Here is, I would love to get to a point where I feel like we've got liner, liner, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: We've got boards around the most of the house, the carpet and sign it, it's an areas and a vine of boards and the others.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they're just tracks dust and do it. [SPEAKER_00]: So I want to get to a point where I've get to, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: got a vacuum, a robotic vacuum, a dead robot, a robotic vacuum, that once a week when the clean comes, or it's me sweeping around the floors and stuff, I just want something that does yes or yes to tidy up, I walk around after you know, preferably when I'm not home and stuff like that, so yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't have any major projects at the moment, it's just, as I find things of these friction points, how do I remove those friction points? [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's the best way to do it, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, people will go along and they'll see, oh, you know, look, I'll get my house to do this, do that.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think you've got to live the house, like, and see the routines you're doing your life before you go out and just blindly start automating things. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, these things which I know I'll do want to replace. [SPEAKER_00]: So my wife brought me a whole bunch of because again, she just goes, right, her research has probably asked the salesperson at the store.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want to buy some cameras for my husband for his birthday for Christmas. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's where all my expensive stuff's always come from, is from her buying them, you know, I look again, now. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, if it's over $100, I kind of thought to do it for myself, but I'm happy to spend it on the kids all the way for whatever.

[SPEAKER_00]: But she'll go off and do the same for me. [SPEAKER_00]: And I've got some uphi doorbells and took a doorbell and some uphi are door battery. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're great, but they're not great, you know, I'd love to get to a point where I've got those replaced because they fit in the, but they don't fit my needs.

[SPEAKER_00]: The wife, you know, I've got to prove just a recent video when I did the reo link I did a video and actually it's saved, I'll say someone's bacon. [SPEAKER_00]: Whereas, because a couple years ago, I had the neighbor come to me and go, hey, I parked out on the street and my car got vandalized.

[SPEAKER_00]: I see you got cameras. [SPEAKER_00]: Can you see what happened? [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, dude, I'm really sorry because I better operated. [SPEAKER_00]: I've had to restrict the dancers, only activity in this piece here. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's only records for, you know, 15, 30 seconds or whatever, so the only one I read look at is my doorbell to be honest.

[SPEAKER_00]: The other ones, [SPEAKER_00]: you know, if something happens, um, that I do want to look back, but not really, you know, and they take so long to fire up and then get into the on the phone and all that. [SPEAKER_00]: So, so with that really because that particular one is, um, powered, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: So, I've got mainspear about Sparky and to put that [SPEAKER_00]: And I put it in there, and I treated like my other ones, which is, cool, I'll just do a vent based, and then it's like, actually, what am I doing? [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'll do continuous, I'll continue to my nails. [SPEAKER_00]: It does continuous to the East Sea and just overrights it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So that way, I've only got a 64 gig East Sea. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's only doing like a day and a half worth of two days maybe of recording, but it goes to my nails. [SPEAKER_00]: One of my nails is, and so I've got for even day at the moment. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's just so happened, I switched across on like on the Sunday night when I was doing it [SPEAKER_00]: I was working from home a man there so I was like, I'll drop my son off to school and my wife to work and I've just finished dropping my wife off to work in my doorbell window and there's a police, I don't know what have I done, what have I been thinking back, what have I, what have I, what have I kind of think, it's okay, I get it, not going to do a bit something and anyway, talk to them, but they could

[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't hear them. [SPEAKER_00]: So my doorbell's speak is something's gone wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: I need to replace the new A. [SPEAKER_00]: So I said, look, if it's important, on five minutes away, come back, anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: So they waited, I came up and they went, hey, probably won't help, but two doors down down the street, a car got stolen and was used for a crime and burnt out.

[SPEAKER_00]: I saw you got this camera and I was walking up and it followed me around and I was wanting by any chance, what it was like, I could've said, the end looked and was like, [SPEAKER_00]: And even though, yeah, so even though it followed them, but then it re-set, because that's kind of outside the range, when it went back, it was still within my range, so I'm allowed to put a place and you know, that's helped them out.

[SPEAKER_00]: So again, it's already saved someone's bacon on there, you know, I will actually probably put someone in the clink, but you know, [SPEAKER_00]: These guys make the insurance job a little bit easier from that regards. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'd like to replace, I think that's showing the value of where the use batteries and with use mains and POEs.

[SPEAKER_00]: And like so that's where I wouldn't mind doing as going around the house and just having battery. [SPEAKER_00]: Putting those where I need to have them and replacing as I go. [SPEAKER_00]: Just having the right gear, the right place. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think that's where like battery cameras for me, like you've just highlighted that for me, like the right decision for cameras is that you want the 247 recording just for that reason, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Because although, like they are very good now with, um, in a really particular with their AI detection, you know, like you can only have a record when people are detected or whatever, there are times where like maybe something's just out of frame or, uh, you want to not [SPEAKER_00]: That's right and I mean the great thing was like you know it followed followed the car because basically the car pulled up to mix of the car and then disappeared and then you saw some people and while [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't want it to follow every single person that walked down the streets off, so I kind of had this area.

[SPEAKER_00]: But so I followed them and tracked them and zoomed on them and then went OK, well, called the other out of that. [SPEAKER_00]: So we went back. [SPEAKER_00]: But again, it's still with them because it's such white angle, it picked it up and was great. [SPEAKER_00]: And so does the right device at the right place.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it definitely is. [SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to have front house back house, if it is for peace of mind, [SPEAKER_00]: You know for capturing these kind of things you need continuous recording. [SPEAKER_02]: I think so. [SPEAKER_02]: Well Steve, I think we're going to leave it there.

[SPEAKER_02]: This has been awesome chat. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much. [SPEAKER_02]: I've taken a time. [SPEAKER_02]: Where can people find you? [SPEAKER_02]: Where we send them? [SPEAKER_00]: Where's your card? [SPEAKER_00]: So, I'll go to my website, which is kiwismarttake.com or code.nz, whichever one you want.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's kiwismarttake. [SPEAKER_00]: And I've got a Facebook link down in YouTube channel kiwismarttake. [SPEAKER_00]: Just one word. [SPEAKER_00]: Easy. [SPEAKER_02]: There you go. [SPEAKER_02]: So if you do want to check out that one to another fellow Kiwi, shout out to our Patreon members, Benny and Jason for supporting us.
