[SPEAKER_01]: Hello and welcome to the Homeless Isn't Podcast, as usual, my name is Rohan, and I'm joined with Feldheil. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, Phil. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Matt. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, going. [SPEAKER_01]: Good. [SPEAKER_01]: And we have Giovanni today. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, Giovanni. [SPEAKER_01]: Hello.

[SPEAKER_01]: In the usual, the spotcast is sponsored by Homeless Isn't Cloud by Nabukasa. [SPEAKER_01]: For a small monthly fee, you'll unlock powerful features, like secure effortless access to your system from anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: Your choice of voices, systems, off-site backups, and more. [SPEAKER_01]: All configural UI with no EM will need it.

[SPEAKER_01]: It also helps support the development of Home Assistant, ESP Home, and other Open Home Foundation projects so click on the link in the description to learn more. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, this episode is sponsored by our friends at Apollo Automation, makers of open source smart home sensors built for the home assistant ecosystem.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're an official open home foundation commercial partner, and their devices are built with local control, privacy, and reliability in mind. [SPEAKER_01]: Almost everything they offer is a works with home assistant, certified, and made for ASP home certified, giving you full control and flexibility right outside the box.

[SPEAKER_01]: and the best part is that they build in the open working directly with the community to create sensors that people actually need. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're deep in the home assistant or even just getting started, check them out at apolloautimation.com. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, Giovanni, let's jump into it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome on the podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for having me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course. [SPEAKER_01]: Tell us a little bit about yourself. [SPEAKER_01]: Where are you here today? [SPEAKER_01]: What got you started in the home automation? [SPEAKER_01]: What brought you into home [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it started during the pandemic because of a lot of free time being at home.

[SPEAKER_00]: I was writing my doctoral thesis, so your home, you cannot go anywhere, so you need to find something to do. [SPEAKER_00]: And I always wanted to try to host something locally and homocystens kind of the easiest I had. [SPEAKER_00]: But I was better by that I never really used for anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: And well, give it a try, we were still living in our older apartment. [SPEAKER_00]: So not too much to do, the area was like, that's my fuel sensor, just to measure the temperature. [SPEAKER_00]: And see what this is, this is maybe 2021, 2022, something like this. [SPEAKER_00]: And then we finally moved to this house where we are now, that it's this, our whole house.

[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it's a real house, I would say in English. [SPEAKER_00]: So there is a little bit more than you can do with the home automation because realistically, like to me, it's more like a hobby. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not something that you feel like you need. [SPEAKER_00]: It's, I don't need to know exactly all the temperature everywhere and all of this.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's a very interesting project that then gets useful with time when you start using different things and you figure out what you actually like to do. [SPEAKER_00]: stuff like that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the home assistant and then after that I figured out that this is the easy part so I like I want to actually start hosting all my services at home, so I built a proper [SPEAKER_00]: photo backup, all the cloud, free gate, for the camera set that are connected to homocystend.

[SPEAKER_00]: a jellyfish in all of the media, media center. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we are going to have a lot of fun stuff to talk about. [SPEAKER_03]: So pandemic hits, had you ever done anything with a smart home before? [SPEAKER_03]: Like what made what was the catalyst for you to want to try at home?

[SPEAKER_03]: This is on a, you said that you want to install something, like you want to install something on a rather private. [SPEAKER_03]: Was there an interesting, instead of things before that? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's, it's, it's not before like, uh, it's more like, [SPEAKER_00]: It feels like more and more with Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and Duryp and

[SPEAKER_00]: That's basically I started because of that, like the all point of my home assistant idea is that everything is to be local and there is no server outside of my house like cloud or anything like I don't want to connect to the internet outside of the house, that's the all point. [SPEAKER_00]: That is it's not a possible with a home assistant, you need to put more work because you need to handle it yourself [SPEAKER_00]: and that that makes it actually what it is supposed to be at least for me and from there it it evolved.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's also it almost like you discovered this whole like [SPEAKER_01]: Not not community, but it's whole, like, sweet of stuff that you could do, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Just for your own consumption, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Rather than having to pay these cloud fees or rather than having to, you know, lose your privacy to services that are, that are, kind of, looking at what you're doing, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: I would say that the biggest thing that happened is that we decided to buy a house. [SPEAKER_00]: So then, then it's like, okay, [SPEAKER_00]: We can actually do stuff like that because if you're renting, if you're renting, you can do it's not just throw some battery sensors, that's fine.

[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not the same when it's your house, you actually do the things because you're going to be there for a while. [SPEAKER_00]: That is a motion. [SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to redo everything every few years. [SPEAKER_01]: So since you're on this cake of doing everything locally and trying to [SPEAKER_01]: Let's call it break out of the cloud, whatever you want to call that, what types of devices are you using in your home that are you trying to prefer local?

[SPEAKER_01]: Is it only local? [SPEAKER_01]: What's the like as you buy sensors or like late switches or all of those kind of things? [SPEAKER_01]: And you kind of basis? [SPEAKER_00]: It's only local. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the main rule. [SPEAKER_00]: If it's not local, I don't even look at it. [SPEAKER_00]: Because it kind of breaks the whole idea to me at least.

[SPEAKER_00]: And what I started with was a few shell-y devices, I guess, you're familiar. [SPEAKER_00]: It's to me, one of the best companies do in this kind of, and they do really a lot of everything, basically, these days they do, like, every protocol, every kind of sensors. [SPEAKER_00]: That is incredible.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have power plug with the thread, met a, well, met a robot thread, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know whatever that's they can have. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're a good paying company, actually. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, they are in a... Yeah, I think they're a full-garian, I think.

[SPEAKER_00]: Or both, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, okay, they're not produced there, but they're based in there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: At Z-Wave, also, that's something I always wanted to get into, but I really do not need, and it's...

[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot more expensive, and the house is not that big. [SPEAKER_00]: We don't need to go that way, but yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So what has been your protocol of choice then? [SPEAKER_03]: If you've tried to stay local, have you tried to stay within matter? [SPEAKER_03]: Have you thought about using Bluetooth or ZB?

[SPEAKER_03]: But where if you... [SPEAKER_00]: I started with Wi-Fi because this is just... And the... Shelly at the time, it was mostly only Wi-Fi. [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody has Wi-Fi. [SPEAKER_00]: If you want, as long as it's not Wi-Fi plus... [SPEAKER_00]: Cloud, that's both all the Chinese brands.

[SPEAKER_00]: They are Wi-Fi, there is a cloud involved, but Shelley and this kind of better devices, they have Wi-Fi, they work really easy, they are really [SPEAKER_00]: Wi-Fi is going to work. [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to have the Wi-Fi working. [SPEAKER_00]: Then from there I got a Zigbee to try mostly because Zika used to use Zigbee, those are really cheap and they were fine and you know that they are going to work.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you just go and get some. [SPEAKER_00]: Then now recently I tried some Bluetooth, [SPEAKER_00]: They are most of them. [SPEAKER_00]: They were quite well using this ESP32 called Proxys. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: When I discovered that you could just flash them through a web browser directly from the ESP32 website, I would like OK and I need to try this.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's amazing. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I got some of this. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a finished company actually that makes outside an insight. [SPEAKER_00]: They are really [SPEAKER_00]: really doable for the outside and their temperature sensor or humidity and at most very pressure and for the inside also.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well I guess you know Finland's famous for the sauna. [SPEAKER_00]: They advertise the sensor to go into the sauna so they can miss the end of easily whatever 78 degrees of the sauna. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So I tried those to Bluetooth. [SPEAKER_00]: They did those are really working very well.

[SPEAKER_00]: out on the expensive side, but you know, when you pay something that it works well, it's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's interesting though, so it's been pretty solid even though it's on Bluetooth and and all of that, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Because I guess you've got these, you've got your proxies kind of spread out across.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I have only two, actually, and they only are where they need to be. [SPEAKER_00]: I have one outside, so that's one outside. [SPEAKER_00]: They connect to that, and they are through Wi-Fi, speaking with almost isn't. [SPEAKER_00]: And I have another one in this room, mostly to try stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, have some Shalei Bluetooth devices in here, like Patensen. [SPEAKER_00]: Because this is like, not my room, it's the room where I have my computer. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not used by anything else at the moment, so I can try all the home assistance things can be tried in here.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because if I change the light bulb, I know that I need to keep the light on to control it because that's the thing. [SPEAKER_00]: We need to change the otherwise all the switches and that's something I haven't done yet. [SPEAKER_03]: So we're going to go down the Shelly rap, do you think in like for ball switches or have you got another idea in mind for how you're doing your lighting?

[SPEAKER_00]: Well lighting most of the houses they are done blind lighting that's just normal light bulbs because realistically [SPEAKER_00]: The way the house is, it's like European houses are not as big as maybe North American Australia, probably similar to that but like there is a kitchen and living room are always a single room and then there are the other rooms so you just turn on the light there, it doesn't.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I don't see the point in like light turn on automatically, it's gonna turn on when I don't want it and that's just annoying. [SPEAKER_00]: So I just go into the button. [SPEAKER_00]: So I haven't had the need to change the switches also because technically you cannot do it if you're not in a nutrition.

[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a project of, you know, you need to pay someone to come to just change the switches and so we have few lights that we need is like the bedroom. [SPEAKER_00]: and there is another button next to the switch that controls that, because it's nice and keep close to bed, you can just control it from the air and change the color or any of those.

[SPEAKER_00]: But other than that, it's just, they wouldn't just not work half the time because someone switches them normally. [SPEAKER_03]: There are some good, like, present sensors now that can do zone detection at other NZGV. [SPEAKER_03]: I think, Apollo Automation have one. [SPEAKER_03]: I know a choir have one that you basically set up a zone.

[SPEAKER_03]: So in your living and kitchen area scenario, you could in theory have one sensor to take, you know, when someone's in the kitchen have a lot on up there and then move around. [SPEAKER_03]: And only when they're in the living room, the lights. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it could be maybe for the kitchen, but we used to have cats until a few months ago, so that was also can have an interesting.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So you tell Ron and I don't have pets because we don't consider this as much, right? [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, I can imagine like people with dogs, we're like in large animals too, right? [SPEAKER_03]: Like motion sensors, they would have to be a lot of planning in terms of, you know, heights [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I tried to have a few of these sensors.

[SPEAKER_00]: I used to have one in the bathroom when the kit was small, that turned on the light automatically, like another light. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was just useful, but then I hit on it any more after that. [SPEAKER_00]: In the living room I try to let's see, can we see if we are there, to turn off the TV, if we are not there and just think that's what it doesn't work.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe the cats want to watch TV. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly, you cannot turn it off for them. [SPEAKER_01]: That's right. [SPEAKER_01]: Outside of, yes, there are other automations or anything like that that you're using or other sensors that you're using to try to automate stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: So what, basically the automations that use the most is the light outside. [SPEAKER_00]: that is turns on like on the door, coming in there is, we have like a front side card and kind of thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So you come through the card and before getting to the door and I have cameras in there again, the cameras are dead just because it's fun to have them and because I wanted to try not because we ever need a camera in our.

[SPEAKER_00]: God event, then it recognizes someone, the comparison is there and then turns on the light. [SPEAKER_00]: So that is nice and then the other one is when I leave, [SPEAKER_00]: then at this notification for the cameras, uh, turn on if a person is detected, I get the message on the phone.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the mostly the notification is, it's just for me because I don't want to start annoying. [SPEAKER_00]: My wife with this, like, I know I wait the phone is the location turn off because whatever all is not updated and are not very care. [SPEAKER_00]: It's that I have it, if I'm at work, she works from home, so it doesn't matter.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if I'm at work, it's nice, maybe, sometimes. [SPEAKER_00]: I see when they come back from the daycare. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, or when the post comes to pick up a package, I can stuff like that. [SPEAKER_03]: So these all powered locally through, forget? [SPEAKER_00]: No, these are actually the just the camera.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just the camera, it's this real link. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they have it. [SPEAKER_00]: First on the tension, they when the, this control homo system, they frigate is mostly doing a recording and all of the recognizing all these things. [SPEAKER_00]: But I could do a lot more. [SPEAKER_00]: I just don't have the time or really the need to do it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, I already set up that you can see that, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: and gate at the entrance is open or closed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. [SPEAKER_00]: The other gate is open and closed, and recognize it all the time, but I don't really use it, I just... [SPEAKER_00]: wouldn't need to make an automation.

[SPEAKER_00]: If the gate is open, let me message, but again, not cats, who cares like it's? [SPEAKER_00]: No, it doesn't really matter. [SPEAKER_03]: How are you doing that gate recognition? [SPEAKER_03]: Is that forget doing that? [SPEAKER_00]: It's a 017 update has this, I don't exactly remember how it's called, that you can just say it's a zone in your camera and then [SPEAKER_00]: Tells you tell the camera, this one is whatever status you want, and this one is the other.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you just show your pictures and then you say this is open and it's closed. [SPEAKER_00]: And then it keeps telling you like I think this is open with 95% accuracy or 80 or 470. [SPEAKER_00]: And then you keep telling, none of this is closed, not open and you train the model like it's a tiny model running on frigate.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess this goes to almost this time I really never tried, it's just an exercise of interest of learning this thing and never used them really. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so is it, I was going to say, because that's a cool, because it's, again, it's having a sensor that actually having a sensor, right, you're using a visual, to visual sensor, right, saying, oh, gate is open gate as well as whatever.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm burning a light tokens to do this, like, Oh, no, yeah, this is running, like, my free get this running on this corral. [SPEAKER_00]: As a narrator, they are hard to find these days, but they get on them. [SPEAKER_00]: You probably can't understand the integrity of the GPU or whatever else, even on the CPU, they are really small models.

[SPEAKER_01]: I thought for some reason, I might be wrong, but I thought they either were talking about end of sailing the coral, or they did end of sail the coral, I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's not supported in a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: It was hard to find like almost a year ago. [SPEAKER_01]: I know.

[SPEAKER_01]: I know it was impossible. [SPEAKER_01]: I remember I was talking to a colleague of mine. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, same thing. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, yeah, I'm doing frigate. [SPEAKER_01]: I got a coral. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, where did you find the coral? [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, oh, I don't know.

[SPEAKER_01]: I bought this random thing and had it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Alec, he had to like, you know, Jerry rigged the whole thing. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I think it's, uh, it wasn't, uh, easy. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you, if you have any GPUs, it's gonna run better anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: It's as consumes more.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: but this is more than I've been there. [SPEAKER_03]: What else are you using for, I'm forgetful then, look, you've got the car all day. [SPEAKER_03]: You're doing the gate detection. [SPEAKER_03]: Yep. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [UNKNOWN]: Yep. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right at that level. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: are you in terms of recording? [SPEAKER_01]: What is your strategy for recording it? [SPEAKER_01]: Because again, this is something I've been thinking about just from storage versus like actual holding onto the recording, kind of thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: Are you recording? [SPEAKER_01]: Are you storing just the clips with our people or are you storing everything? [SPEAKER_01]: Like is it just 217 continuous? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's frigate is in the array server. [SPEAKER_00]: So I have a dedicated [SPEAKER_00]: CCTV optimized drive, whatever.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just whatever if it breaks. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't care. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is holding a, I think, few days of 24, seven recording, 24, two days, because I don't even know why it just, you can scroll through the timeline if, I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, it's two terabyte just because we just use it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then it keeps for, [SPEAKER_00]: basically in definitely slight thing two years. [SPEAKER_00]: I sat up all the alerts or the detection basically. [SPEAKER_00]: Just because let's say in two years if I want to see, oh, have we ever playing outside with my kid? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm never going to look at them again, but we had one time that we were outside watching the rain.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was a big rainstorm and there was a lightning hit really near. [SPEAKER_00]: that you can actually hear it really strongly and you can actually see the BIFI signal getting disturbed by the electricity in the air before the sound. [SPEAKER_00]: You see the recordings messed up a little bit before the sound.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then when it's like, we need to check what this happened in the camera universe. [SPEAKER_00]: So for this kind of experience, it's nice. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: That's called again. [SPEAKER_00]: It's always something interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I've had like my cameras less than a year around my house.

[SPEAKER_03]: And I think I have the recording 247 to my ubiquity thing. [SPEAKER_03]: And it's only like only stores like a day or two of data. [SPEAKER_03]: And across the street from me, my name's House caught on fire, and you could hear some like gas bottles exploding, of course it wasn't a UI event, so the really cameras didn't save it, but because it was constantly recording, I could actually go back in time, and then here, like on the camera feed, oh yeah, like there's the actual, the gas bottles exploding right here at the back, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so for these things, something happens you have the recording, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so for these things, something happens you have the recording, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's an example of that. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, interesting. [SPEAKER_03]: And then I got the time my daughter and some were playing in the trampoline in the background in the backyard and my daughter fell out of the trampoline. [SPEAKER_03]: And it was a claim that my young son had pushed her out.

[SPEAKER_03]: And we needed to get the third on fire involved. [SPEAKER_03]: Just to verify if that was the case. [SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, the third on Pi was a bit inconclusive of whether or not there was pushing involved, but it's certainly, we caught the stack on the camera.

[SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, camera is gonna be fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, that's basically the only reason. [SPEAKER_00]: And I have two of them even because, again, why not? [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, my, yeah, it's fun of me. [SPEAKER_00]: So, I think, why do you need two? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, just let me be.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a toy. [SPEAKER_02]: Why are you only trying? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, when you're getting number three, when you're getting number four. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, more than that, I don't have places to record. [SPEAKER_00]: For sure, I don't want them inside.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I was taking when the cards were here would be nice to see the cards, but... Ah, yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: There's a whole market around that too, right? [SPEAKER_03]: Like, people having pet camps, to watch their pets while they're away. [SPEAKER_00]: Ah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It hurts me a lot when people don't care about this, because again, it's...

[SPEAKER_00]: If you hear this just a little bit, whatever, it happens. [SPEAKER_00]: There is always something that, you know, it's inside your house. [SPEAKER_00]: Even, okay, this is something that when I figure it out. [SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of scary in a way because frigate. [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people that somehow know enough to do it, but not enough to do it well, they just open the port to frigate.

[SPEAKER_00]: and freeget is not authenticated into the basic port. [SPEAKER_00]: It's authenticated on another port. [SPEAKER_00]: And if you open the basic port, it's you just find it online. [SPEAKER_00]: And if you actually search freeget, you find people house online because it's just open. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this is freeget, so you're doing a step forward.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you [SPEAKER_00]: These things are not, it's just be careful on these things. [SPEAKER_00]: When it's inside your house, yeah, yeah, I definitely agree. [SPEAKER_01]: The most secure way of keeping that is just not having it right at that point. [SPEAKER_00]: No, yeah, that's for sure.

[SPEAKER_00]: The cameras are locked, like this other guard, DNS than they are just not going online. [SPEAKER_00]: So they don't exit the house and then they stay over. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That makes sense. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, obviously some of the things that you that you do are self-hosted a bunch of other services.

[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get into those services, are you bringing other services into home assistant as well? [SPEAKER_00]: Not really. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, [SPEAKER_00]: homocyst and test the kind of thing that I really like and some there is this that is I think to philosophy of people that have proxmox and they virtualize everything.

[SPEAKER_00]: I like to not virtualize anything and have hardware for each of the services mostly because I'm gonna break something or something's gonna break. [SPEAKER_00]: And when they break, it's just really annoying. [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't have the time to do it maybe at that second. [SPEAKER_00]: So homocystened, it's, if it breaks, it's annoying because it might affect something that we use in the house.

[SPEAKER_00]: Just a little bit, but it even the light doesn't turn on and it's just there, come on. [SPEAKER_00]: and then it loses the point. [SPEAKER_00]: So homocy said it's some computer. [SPEAKER_00]: It's now it's not a Raspberry Pi type. [SPEAKER_00]: It's way too slow. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just an 100 mini PC it they are.

[SPEAKER_00]: Basically the same price. [SPEAKER_00]: We're not these days. [SPEAKER_00]: They were last year. [SPEAKER_00]: Basically the same price. [SPEAKER_00]: These days it's whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the prices. [SPEAKER_00]: But then Rade, it's its own server with all the storage and all the heavy services basically.

[SPEAKER_00]: All the Docker containers and all this kind of stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: And the plan is to have another mini PC running another rate that would take care of all the networking, like reverse proxy and all of this. [SPEAKER_00]: That at this moment is running on homocystened because it's the one that never shuts off.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the ad on it's not really good. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's working. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't need to change it, but I need to change it if I want to. [SPEAKER_00]: make it better. [SPEAKER_00]: So there is this all this plan set. [SPEAKER_00]: Luckily, a bit of all of this before the kill was born and now it's, you know, time is, you can only do it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Totally agree. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Amazing how much time we lose, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's a Uida sleep or do this. [SPEAKER_03]: So are you running home assistant OS then on that mini PC? [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, or have you? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just a home assistant computer.

[SPEAKER_03]: And then you've got a couple of home assistant apps I've loaded from the apps. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we have some of the addons or whatever, they are quite a change the name now. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got lots of apps, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the apps like engine x-proxy manager, [SPEAKER_00]: some other ones.

[SPEAKER_00]: I was listening to an episode that you did some time ago about this cottage guy who was doing a lot with an old red has been installed for years and ever got to use it. [SPEAKER_00]: But this kind of things and not in like major homocystins is really like running homocystins and very few other things.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I'm QTT just to try a little bit. [SPEAKER_00]: And why a wide-guld for the VPN, that's because I know that it's gonna always be on the most live. [SPEAKER_00]: Most of these things that I know I want to be there always. [SPEAKER_00]: And if I turn off the server to do some stuff, it's still working.

[SPEAKER_00]: But the main, my main machine is the arrayed server, where most of the stuff is running. [SPEAKER_03]: Now, if you're looking to upgrade your smartphone, you really can't go past those. [SPEAKER_03]: They've got their 800 series Zwave Long Range Power Script, the Zen 2800LR, so you can turn a single outlet into multiple, individually controllable smart sockets.

[SPEAKER_03]: Drop it under a desk, behind your TV unit, or in your server rack to tame all those always on gadgets. [SPEAKER_03]: and still monitor and automate each outlet separately. [SPEAKER_03]: It's perfect for things like network gear, charges, lamps, game consoles, anywhere you want more smart control without adding a bunch of separate plugs.

[SPEAKER_03]: Zeus is also an official works with home assistant partner. [SPEAKER_03]: and they've been helping Nabikasa, providing long-range devices to test the Homieson Connect is their WA2 radio. [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, you're in friendly hands. [SPEAKER_03]: Beyond their power strip, Zeus offers a full range of affordable, innovative gear, water licensors, motorised water valve controllers, smart plugs, and sink controllers.

[SPEAKER_03]: Plus, there's N78, high power relay for loads up to 40 amps, including pool pumps and air compressors. [SPEAKER_03]: For the best prices on all zoos products, head over to thesmartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_03]: That's thesmartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_01]: Giovanni, let's talk about some of these services you're running now.

[SPEAKER_01]: So what kind of services are you running locally and what are you doing with them? [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, starting from what everybody knows, plex and jellyfish, yeah, I don't know how much you ran on the beside the homocystent since the podcast is about homocystent, but anything media related is basically either jellyfish or plex.

[SPEAKER_03]: I need to know, so I was literally, this is what I mean, I read your messaging with all the Matt self-hostals, okay, yes, I have some questions. [SPEAKER_03]: I was literally going to talk to chat to BT today. [SPEAKER_03]: I have issues with my Plex server in that it is ridiculously slow to search for things or anything like that.

[SPEAKER_03]: How are you finding your Plex experience? [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I assume it's my hardware. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm running it on a very old technology and now it's like over 10 years old now. [SPEAKER_03]: It is loading like the interface for you and searching your library slow on TV or on the app.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I don't use Plex much. [SPEAKER_00]: I have a training because why not? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mostly use gelifin at the moment. [SPEAKER_00]: It has a feeling. [SPEAKER_00]: It's basically the same. [SPEAKER_00]: I have the Plex pass since five years ago, so there is no point in not running Plex.

[SPEAKER_00]: Gelifin is the open source alternative, so if you are into that gelifin, it's the better option in the sense that you know 100% you control the [SPEAKER_00]: they will full stack and it works completely fine. [SPEAKER_00]: This is running on it's i580 for a thousand four hundredths until like this.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's it's for sure much more powerful than than whatever this integrated smallness probably that would help even running on anything [SPEAKER_00]: more modern, whatever, just a synthetic, also has a proper GPU, an integrated GPU, that's enough for small transcode and if needed. [SPEAKER_00]: Other than that, all of the media is on hard drives and that's not a problem, that's not.

[SPEAKER_00]: The storage is not the dust speed, if for sure it's probably the CPU side. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I said. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I would say get to make a proper server with the proper hardware, but it's not the best time now to buy a new one. [SPEAKER_03]: It is not, it is not.

[SPEAKER_03]: It's unbelievably expensive. [SPEAKER_03]: Like, like, have you just got like a dedicated box of media then? [SPEAKER_03]: Like is it just this? [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, well, the garlic server is everything. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the storage, so all the media is there. [SPEAKER_00]: Plus everything else, it's also there.

[SPEAKER_00]: So media is on hard drives, stealthy and then there is the automation stack. [SPEAKER_00]: for media. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how much you want to go into that. [SPEAKER_03]: But let's do it. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm guessing you're running the arse then. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you also run the Linux ISOs from those? [SPEAKER_03]: Of course. [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_03]: The highest quality is ISO. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, actually, the all of this media [SPEAKER_00]: a desire to get more into the analog, since I'm from the late 80s, you know, grew up in the 90s, VHS and all this.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's an experience that is kind of missing. [SPEAKER_00]: I know that it sounds weird sometimes, but it would be nice for the kids this day to have a little bit of this feeling also. [SPEAKER_00]: and then rape those into the server. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a nice, when she's too small yet, but in few years, it's like the disk you watch the movie and it's more of an experience.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's an amazing experience. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm doing something and it's in my mind, I don't know how much she cares, but, you know. [SPEAKER_03]: You go to someone's house and you see like the bookcase of VHS tapes or DVD covers, right? [SPEAKER_03]: And you see, oh yeah, you rented it to that movie or I haven't seen that movie in years, right?

[SPEAKER_03]: Now it's all the algorithms you're serving you up, whatever it thinks you'll get a want to watch. [SPEAKER_03]: We're all getting very similar things fed down to us at some point, being on who's paying for advertising space that month too. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: and so all of that is you know you don't need also you don't need to have internet like all this jellyfish and legs, legs depends you need to set up correctly but yeah if you don't have no internet at home you can still watch whatever you want and yeah that's also it doesn't ever happens that there is no internet but if it does you know you can still watch movie that's [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so your Linux ISO is all automated then, and that feeds then into JellyFin.

[SPEAKER_03]: What sort of devices are you using to access JellyFin? [SPEAKER_03]: Are you using like some Android boxes connected to this? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's another box connected to a TV. [SPEAKER_00]: TV is a semi smart TV, it's an old TV again. [SPEAKER_00]: not need to change it yet and also other big rule for me is that TV does not connect to the internet.

[SPEAKER_00]: They don't need to know what I watch and Android box is kind of borderline too much for some people, but it's already better than just a TV. [SPEAKER_03]: I know I have an LG Web OS TV, and currently it's connected to the internet because that has all the apps on it, but at the same time I also get served ads when I'm trying to switch between inputs, but it doesn't interrupt what I'm trying to watch, but I can see it like there's a banner on the side, you know, recommending something like that.

[SPEAKER_01]: When you're going from like HDMI 1 to like HDMI 2, you get an ad, like there's like [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah exactly like it doesn't it doesn't Distrap what I'm trying to do but on the side of the world That's great. [SPEAKER_01]: He said no. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't have an LED TV but that's just that's it's in no [SPEAKER_03]: I've heard recently that some team manufacturers like in the US, I think it's Walmart, maybe it could be wrong here, but if you don't sign in with your Walmart account on this branded TV, you can't use the TV, essentially they want to get a marry up your watching habits to them.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: If it's a cheap TV, you're paying for that. [SPEAKER_00]: But if you spend 3,000 euros, a dollar or whatever, on a modern OLED TV, it's like, come on. [SPEAKER_00]: It's already expensive, and I don't need to see it. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's the Android box.

[SPEAKER_00]: Also, everything works better on the app, a fast service, and you can install whatever you want. [SPEAKER_00]: Totally. [SPEAKER_03]: What Android box is it? [SPEAKER_00]: Is this a TV show or something? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was expensive and it's kind of probably it's not the best you can buy there is a rabbit hole on this that I don't want to know into What I have is some Nokia branded streaming box that is just branded this some German company Yeah, yeah, it's it's a feeling so you know it's a Nokia brand you find it easy here and that's yeah, it's good [SPEAKER_03]: So, you get all your media and what else have you got moving on from there, like?

[SPEAKER_00]: So, media is what most of, I would say, that's what starts usually. [SPEAKER_00]: So, like, I just want to have my media there and I want to pay for Netflix or have problem with all these 10 different streaming services. [SPEAKER_00]: You have your media and you have it there. [SPEAKER_00]: Then for me, I used the next cloud.

[SPEAKER_00]: for as a cloud and that would be a good driver placement on your streaming basically yes and it's well next cloud itself at least the way you can there are different way to install it easier or this there is only one [SPEAKER_00]: way to install it as the official one that does installs all the contents for you and you can do next lot of voice that is basically teams or some like something like that but of course I don't use it because it sits and there would be for a office environment that you would have all the office and then you can do online office like a document and spreadsheet stuff like that that you sometimes for your own [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you can do like notes.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can do a lot of many of the things that different apps you just do it with one, like this project planning, or it's all the like work suit that you will expect. [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm guessing there is a higher mind where you could, like I'm guessing if you didn't want to use or what's app or a signal or something.

[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe good, how is your own business? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you really want to go like that deep in the, yes, I'm not that, that into that, mostly because then you need to convince other people. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's super difficult. [SPEAKER_00]: And if the server doesn't work, it's my fault, so no thanks.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I try to keep it so that I'm annoyed if it doesn't work and nobody else. [SPEAKER_00]: That's very. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And for that, it's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: One, so this one are like, I don't know how much many people use it, but to me, the biggest one that I discovered, and it's a, I probably game changer for me was image.

[SPEAKER_00]: That is this photo, Google Photo Replacement. [SPEAKER_00]: That's just amazing also. [SPEAKER_00]: it's actually just like a it's a beautiful app like it actually like visually really nice and just built well yeah yeah any works it works really well and the cell fosterings side these days it's super easy like a few years ago you had to babysit it a lot every update changing something on the compose file and everything but these days you just it works and it's so amazing so that [SPEAKER_00]: Are you using it now?

[SPEAKER_00]: That's the maximum I go. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Are they using your image? [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and so do you just... Yeah, yeah, they use my image. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's just publicly exposed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: So, well, it goes through V-plams. [SPEAKER_00]: No, no.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is called through CloudFlare. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the reverse proxy. [SPEAKER_00]: And then image, so it's exactly my setup. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's there is some limitation because cloud flare and the way it's I've set it up there is this 100 megabyte limit So some yeah, some it's easy to solve but to solve it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will need to I need to do it eventually. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just when you have the time rebuild all this tack away from the homocyst and box [SPEAKER_00]: It's probably not going to take a lot, but if you break it, everything breaks, so you need to take time to do a proper linear. [SPEAKER_03]: One of the big things I find when we're talking about self-hosting photos and videos for me, like this stuff is mission-critical in terms of, like, I don't want to lose those photos and memories due to a house fire or anything.

[SPEAKER_03]: Are you guys, I don't know, Frank, you just mentioned that you're doing some of the setup. [SPEAKER_03]: Have you guys got off-site backups for these photos? [SPEAKER_03]: Because that's the... [SPEAKER_03]: For me, that is the piece of mind for my Google One subscription that I know, those photos and videos are backed up to Google's cloud and they are, as long as I don't use my Google account, they're safe.

[SPEAKER_03]: But if I do have a house fire, which is not out of the realm's possibility in the future, I lose my server, I lose all those photos, if I don't have [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have since I'm using Proton as my email. [SPEAKER_00]: They also, there is Proton Drive and that is encrypted by default.

[SPEAKER_00]: So there I upload the pictures directly or everything is uploaded there. [SPEAKER_00]: And because that's fine, the other thing is like, yeah, you're uploading to whatever big company cloud. [SPEAKER_00]: If they are not encrypted, they have your pictures and that's kind of. [SPEAKER_00]: even more when the kid is born, it kind of feels wrong to me, so I back up with that and then I have I'm using duplicate it mostly and to make backup software all image folder and next cloud and backup there, I read everything, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: into some cloud services, there are some European cloud services that offer lifetime even so you can buy this few terabyte lifetime and you just upload there with some software, there are many, I just found another one that is called Pluton.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just testing it this [SPEAKER_00]: they just encrypt and upload. [SPEAKER_00]: So everything you upload is all encrypted, and you don't need to worry about, if it's pictures or if it's your whatever data from the array or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: So basically, I upload it in two different clouds.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's in the array, it's in the SSD where the image is running. [SPEAKER_00]: So that is should not be a problem. [SPEAKER_03]: Shout out to Jepalcati as well there, like I used Jepalcati from my service as well. [SPEAKER_00]: That is a- Yeah, this was most of that I've been using, yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I use this grandfather, I actually hate the service, but it's with crash plan, and it's just- [SPEAKER_01]: It's a terrible service, but it's a cheapest one I could find and it's like it gets a job done, but it's like you need to use their client on a, you can't run it headless.

[SPEAKER_01]: So I have a dedicated Ubuntu via because I run all my stuff headless, but I've dedicated Ubuntu VM with with a UI because it doesn't run on, I think I don't know if they have a rocky client [SPEAKER_01]: It's just annoying, but it's way cheaper than anything else, and because I just got grandfathered into this plan from years ago, and even now, like, their plans are, I wouldn't go with their service now, but yeah, I'm on my own some of this lifetime clouds.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they might not be the best, or, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: And lifetime is as long as they exist, or as you know, it works, but if it's a few hundreds of euro, it's like, if it lasts for few years, it's already okay, sure. [SPEAKER_00]: And if it lasts longer, they are fine, and yeah, yeah, that's what I got to start looking at that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, of course, I guess you don't have terabytes of pictures. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I have videos now, so it's starting to, again, it's, I never did until I had a kid and now it's just, like, foolish, it's like [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like starting to run out of space just with this, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So it's like okay.

[SPEAKER_03]: And I have smart phones recording in 4K and 8K, like, oh, it's all that's up. [SPEAKER_00]: It gets worse. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this is the, I would say everybody should sell false, but everybody should do it at the same time because it's easy to start, but do it properly. [SPEAKER_00]: It takes a long time and if you screw up.

[SPEAKER_00]: you really lose a lot of stuff like it. [SPEAKER_00]: Even happened to me that I had two small powers applied that I bought for the server at the beginning. [SPEAKER_00]: I just, you know, by a cheap one, whatever, I'm just gonna try how it is, and then I never thought about it, keep adding drives and drives, and then the 12-volt line rails.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: They were not supplying enough power to the disks. [SPEAKER_00]: And then I was getting, I wrote on the disk and I had the disk broken and what's happening and at the end it was the power supply. [SPEAKER_00]: But then this happened during a parity reveal also. [SPEAKER_00]: So you lose some data.

[SPEAKER_00]: Of course you have the backups if you do it properly. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's fine. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's easy. [SPEAKER_00]: You can just mess it up. [SPEAKER_00]: Even if you know what you're doing, you just don't think about it. [SPEAKER_00]: And just you do something wrong with it.

[SPEAKER_00]: You lost a... [SPEAKER_00]: these cool of data and if it's all your features, that's not a good fun. [SPEAKER_03]: That's sinking feeling when you know something's just gone down right like if that's you're not getting that back, it's yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's why I like I'm not running image for my parents anywhere else than my servers, so I can [SPEAKER_00]: Do everything if there is something broken, I just fix it, I go into their own, I mean, I have access to their account because, I mean, whatever it is, my parents don't care if I see the pictures they have there.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's most pictures of my kid and my sister's kids. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's probably pictures you want anyways. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's not something I wouldn't have for my friends, that's maybe gets a little bit too much. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yeah, probably. [SPEAKER_03]: So then what's the next thing you're going to self-host?

[SPEAKER_03]: Like you've got media, self-hosts, I would be going to AI, I would be thought that way. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this is, eventually I was getting there because I don't, you know, on this paperless NGX. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I love HOS. [SPEAKER_03]: Another question. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.

[SPEAKER_00]: This one I use it, I don't use it really much, most of the documents are online somewhere anyway, but that one I've been using for a while and you can attach all this AI to it. [SPEAKER_00]: And again, I don't want that to go to an external AI, so I just got a GPU a few weeks ago, like a 36 to 12 gigabytes, so it doesn't run anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like 910 gigabyte models and for this kind of stuff, it's tagging and just OCR, checking documents and just doing simple things any model basically is fine. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm trying a little bit of this locally I've not for chatting, sometimes I use it just to try but. [SPEAKER_00]: Realistically they are not really that good.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you run it on small GPUs, [SPEAKER_00]: But it's still locally, if you need to ask something. [SPEAKER_00]: I would not want to give my all homocystent access with this hard day called the homocystent servers for the AI. [SPEAKER_00]: You like to close, you give the access to all your homocystent.

[SPEAKER_00]: There will be, again, against the all point of being local, so eventually I want to try to run into on the GPU on the server. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, for those that don't know, paperless is a self-hosted tool that I will read PDF documents, scan them with OCR and then categorize them. [SPEAKER_03]: I have it set up to read my Gmail account.

[SPEAKER_03]: Anything that's got a PDF attachment gets read by paperless and then categorized. [SPEAKER_03]: So get that is another fantastic self-hosted tool. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: I like using it for instruction manuals. [SPEAKER_01]: like you buy a new whatever, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, oh, here's a new lawnmower.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I ever, ever, ever read the instruction manual from a lawnmower, probably not, but in case I ever need it, I'll just be like, I'll dump it in there and then actually throw it to paperman, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And then it's just there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have the found this cold water rucker.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's a warranty tracking. [SPEAKER_00]: So it was basically, [SPEAKER_00]: that it's kind of like paperless for warranties, but also connects to paperless. [SPEAKER_00]: So you can just tell the warranty and just find the document on paperless and there is a link in the description. [SPEAKER_00]: You can keep a receipt and stuff in there.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, on paperless and then you just the warranty you track it with this other one. [SPEAKER_00]: And then there is the same that you can add the manual also for this one thing. [SPEAKER_00]: And something interesting, like I should do it, but then I you never do it because I have the people [SPEAKER_03]: If you're interested in warranty tracking, or I've got what I'm using at home box, it's called another self-hosted program.

[SPEAKER_03]: It is basically a home asset monitoring tool. [SPEAKER_03]: So you can put in all your serial numbers, the manufacturing details. [SPEAKER_03]: How much you purchase, like maybe TVs, refrigerators, when warranty expires. [SPEAKER_03]: You can then track where those items are in your house.

[SPEAKER_03]: because I am always losing things, right, like where is that gadget that I know I got two years ago that I've put away in a box somewhere. [SPEAKER_03]: I can't remember which box it was. [SPEAKER_03]: But now with home box, you can actually divide up your room into storage containers and cupboards, boxes, and then you know, okay, I know that device is in that box, which is in that cupboard.

[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, you can also track pricing, serial numbers and all that stuff. [SPEAKER_03]: So if you never need to work, oh, is that fridge-selling warranty? [SPEAKER_03]: You can just look it up in Homebox, everything gets an asset number and all where you go. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I've seen it before.

[SPEAKER_00]: But that's when I, if I tell my wife that I want to do that, she's gonna love at me, like, come on. [SPEAKER_00]: You're already too much in your life like that. [SPEAKER_00]: You want to do it online or something. [SPEAKER_03]: You don't think about it. [SPEAKER_03]: I was exactly the same.

[SPEAKER_03]: I was it is useful. [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, I'm just going to do it for the stuff that I want to track. [SPEAKER_03]: And I've only done that, right? [SPEAKER_03]: And then for me, I mean, sure it's point of view, like we are under insured, just by like the amount of stuff I've tracked from my own side of things, a little alone, like clothing and all the other rubbish I'm never going to like asset manage.

[SPEAKER_03]: All right, it's amazing, like once you start like documenting all this stuff, like you realize, oh, well, we actually do have a lot of stuff and there's a lot of stuff that you could call, right, that you don't kind of necessarily [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's a good way to get rid of all the stuff, you're like, oh, that's too much.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to put them on this and I need to get rid of it. [SPEAKER_00]: Another thing that still on the AI, this one is probably my favorite service. [SPEAKER_00]: I run beside the big ones. [SPEAKER_00]: It's called Karakip and it's a bookmark application, basically it's a self-hosted bookmark.

[SPEAKER_00]: any AI, if it's your own, you know, lama, for example, then it does all the tagging. [SPEAKER_00]: And that one is amazing because then you are saving your own bookmarks on your own server instead of on the browser you're using. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I've heard it just. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's really, really nice.

[SPEAKER_00]: And again, it's one of the things that you just... [SPEAKER_00]: it's really to start its Docker composer, you throw it there, set it up, and then it just works. [SPEAKER_00]: That's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, what was that one called? [SPEAKER_00]: I need to look at that. [SPEAKER_00]: Kara keep.

[SPEAKER_00]: If anybody does any bookmark, there is also, there is another one. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like [SPEAKER_00]: for bookmark. [SPEAKER_00]: It's something worth it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, something worth it. [SPEAKER_03]: But also, a bit more than self-hazard bit more is another. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh yes, that was good.

[SPEAKER_03]: That is, I use both warden and harder than that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, if you do that. [SPEAKER_00]: It's installed, I need to switch, I use bit more than. [SPEAKER_00]: And I just need to do the switch to the local one. [SPEAKER_01]: You know what it is for me is it's like I'm I'm actually too worried about like for me my passwords are extremely important right like if I got like I'm I'm oh yeah [SPEAKER_01]: you're pretty done, because even like, I don't know my Gmail password, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's it's so what happens is it's like, you know, like, if I lose whatever that is running on and like, you know, just whatever reason, yeah, I have backups, yeah, I have all the stuff, but if everything goes to, to take it to garbage, then I'm like, oh, yeah, so that's actually one thing I, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: pay for and I'm okay paying for just because I'm like oh man I cannot afford to lose that because that is my life like all of my last ones on this one this is one of the things that if you don't like the risk don't don't do it also yes yeah the bit worth and it's also local on every device so technically you need to lose all your device to lose the passwords [SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, what I do is also, since I have the problems with that I pay anyway, I just be synchronized.

[SPEAKER_00]: Once in a while you think it to that, you never, I don't use the other person, but the person are there also because you went out and just in case. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've like having a very bit warden thing locally has saved me before I know like I've had the bit warden server go down and then I need to log in a bit warden right but I can because it's a yeah, but yeah, having I think last pass for me was really the one where I was like you know what [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not trusting like a third party with my all my passwords, because they are the keys to kingdom and bit water now have the ability to store pass keys as well.

[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure last pass and everyone else do as well. [SPEAKER_03]: So if you're storing pass keys in your password manager, it's game over. [SPEAKER_03]: If they're not secure enough on their side. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I don't like last pass. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what it was. [SPEAKER_01]: I never have really it's [SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, for me, I, again, personally, I use not endorsement anyway to do your own research, but I use one password, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: And it's been, and again, even in, I know, very, very large companies that are insecurity, and so on, so for that use one password, I'm like, okay, if it's good enough for them, then it's probably because again, I'm not going to sit there and do the security on it, but they are, they have a lot more delusant ideas.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if it's good enough for this multi-billion dollar company is with that, you know, run through all of their audits and all that stuff and it's like, okay, and Yeah, of course if you sell false that you need to make sure that it's safe by yourself Yes, but it's gonna come to your server and steal your password.

[SPEAKER_00]: Realistically what does he matter but still you know need to be done properly anyway, so [SPEAKER_01]: I will say this to your mind, so I kind of hinted at this earlier where I've been rebuilding a lot of my stack and stuff like that, and I just had a lot of instability and their driver issues and a whole bunch of other things.

[SPEAKER_01]: But as I was rebuilding everything in the last few weeks, [SPEAKER_01]: One of the things I noticed is I actually noticed a bunch of connections coming in, externally from CloudFlare Tunnel, even though I've had the CloudFlare waft, the web app filter coming in, like it's blocking pretty much a bunch of countries, like it's blocking pretty much everywhere.

[SPEAKER_01]: And all of these things, I'm still noticing incoming connections, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So now I went through and I've set up all of these things within I use traffic as better as a risk proxy. [SPEAKER_01]: But I've gone through and set up [SPEAKER_01]: all these rules, a bunch of middleware, all the stuff to track it, to log it and block it right and so it's like but I'm still seeing stuff coming in and obviously now it's getting blocked which is ideal but yeah I don't know it's still as safe as it is there's still there's still potential for it to not be oh yeah of course so you don't want to risk it [SPEAKER_00]: That's the best way to do it like this is it cannot be that you do this so hard core that you start to ruin your life because you need to self-host it because it's fine to pay someone else to do something you don't want to do it.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's fun until it's not basically. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, and and the other thing is it's I also like for the one time, it doesn't work. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to get yelled at. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, if it's just me, it's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if it's a family using it, but it's like, yeah, I've got to get it.
