[SPEAKER_01]: Hello and welcome to the Homestas and Broadcast. [SPEAKER_01]: My name is Rohan and it's usual. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm joined with my friend, Phil, Hey Phil. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, where are you? [SPEAKER_00]: How are you going? [SPEAKER_01]: Good. [SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, here's a quick word from our sponsor, Homestas and Cloud by Navulcassa.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you've ever tried to set up remote access to hardway with dynamic DNS, reverse proxy, self-signed search, Navulcassa is the easy button. [SPEAKER_01]: Sign up, flip a switch, done. [SPEAKER_01]: and you can access your home citizen instance from anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: What's more is you also get secure off-site backups, voice control with the Amazon Echo or Google Home devices, and the ability to supercharge your DIY voice assistant.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a part we love, is that your subscription pays the developers behind home assistant ESP home and the open home foundation. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the best few dollars a month you'll spend on your smart home. [SPEAKER_01]: Start your 31-day trial today. [SPEAKER_01]: Just open your home assistance settings, go to the cloud page or sign up at nabucacet.com put the link in the description.
[SPEAKER_01]: This episode is also sponsored by our friends at Apollo Automation, makers of open-source smart home sensors built for the homesteading ecosystem. [SPEAKER_01]: They're an official open home foundation, commercial partner, and their devices are built with local control, privacy, and reliability in mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: Almost everything they offer is works with homelessness in certified and made for ESP home certified. [SPEAKER_01]: Giving you full control and flexibility right out of the box, and the best part, they build in the open, working directly with the community to create the sensors that people actually need.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a deep at no-home assistant or you're just getting started, definitely check [SPEAKER_01]: I also want to give a shout out to our Patreon members, including our executive producers Benny and Jason. [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, we're on 26.9. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about that a little bit because we've got a little bit of a big episode to get through.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is going to be a big one because there's a whole bunch of other stuff to talk about too. [SPEAKER_00]: First of all, I think we need to address the maps issue. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you, I know you're in the middle of moving house the moment, this is a technically the first public episode, you know we've had another episode, you know, you have to have patreon's wager in its new house, but this is the first release episode we're in your new house and you still got the teething issues with the house there.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I, [SPEAKER_00]: went on to my maps the other day and there was a big message all over the maps, sprawled everywhere, API key required. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like the provider that home assistant was using since 2016, I believe it is. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, almost like 10 years, right, like home assistant, maybe 2016, 2017, something about home assistant has been using that maps provider.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pull the ROG, I guess, in some point, I'm going to say, you know what, too many API requests are now coming from everywhere, you need to APRK. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't believe there is an inability to set an API key anywhere within our assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: So what that means is home assistant now working on getting those maps replaced essentially.
[SPEAKER_00]: So what's happening now? [SPEAKER_00]: As I'm frightened now, we are talking about the 2026.9 beta, that's what we are I've been using. [SPEAKER_00]: It is still broken in that beta. [SPEAKER_00]: Home assistant devs are working very fast that actually reached out to the open strict map foundation and they're going to help home assistant migrate to their vector tiles, the tiles being the issue on those maps.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this means that you [SPEAKER_00]: to get rid of those to fix those maps essentially. [SPEAKER_00]: maybe something will happen before then. [SPEAKER_00]: But for the most part, yet, any pre from my understanding, any version older than 2026.9 of home assistant will no longer have full maps capabilities.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that sucks. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, technically still work. [SPEAKER_01]: You just have watermarks all over your [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but you know what? [SPEAKER_01]: Again, this is a shout out to the team for jumping on this the second they noticed it and being like, okay, let's we've got to find a way around this.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is pretty it's a pretty big feature right. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the maps is a big part of home assistant, right, especially if you're using device trackers and stuff like that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, again, functionally, it's all fine. [SPEAKER_01]: Like stuff still works. [SPEAKER_01]: It's still, it's just a visual display of the map that doesn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not like your device trackers are going down or anything like that. [SPEAKER_01]: If you don't care for the map, then honestly, this probably doesn't affect you. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you might at some point care about it, but maybe not right now. [SPEAKER_01]: So, but yeah, that is, that is a pretty big one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, on other news, home assistance release details for this year's community day, which is going to take place Saturday, November 7th. [SPEAKER_01]: It won't just be a home assistant community day, it will also be a community day for all home's open home foundation projects, including ESP home and music assistant.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're going to send more details out later this month. [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I believe you're a host last year. [SPEAKER_00]: They are putting out a call if you'd like to be a host again this year. [SPEAKER_00]: They can't contact you because of Luna's privacy settings, but there will be a special host only discord channel and there's going to be a whole bunch of more details around [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm more support for hosts this year as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you didn't host last year or if you did host last year, yeah, stay tuned, reach out. [SPEAKER_00]: There will be some more details coming up later this month. [SPEAKER_00]: We've had a couple of products released this month too from Open Home Foundation, as well, and Apollo Automation, so Apollo Automation, which is the second official commercial partner of the Open Home Foundation, and also sponsor of this show, have released an ESP home starter kit, which was built in collaboration with the Open Home Foundation.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a small solder-free assembly that's allowing you to learn how to build something and tie it into ESP home. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a great little kit, it's pretty cheap, I think it was like 4, I'm going to say it's $49 USD, don't quote me on that. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, a great way if you are a bit like me and don't want to solder, it's all ribbon cables and stuff like that, a good way to sort of tinker around and see what is possible with an ESP home.
[SPEAKER_01]: learn the skills for, you know, being able to DIY some sensors and and do those kind of things, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So other automation have also announced they have released cast one. [SPEAKER_00]: So I am, I would like to think of this dream of the old Google Chrome audio, is it Google?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the one. [SPEAKER_00]: That is, I'm pretty much the cast one is basically like a direct replacement for that. [SPEAKER_00]: It allows you to put in any speaker that supports a 3.5 millimeter line-in input. [SPEAKER_00]: You can now make that a network capable speaker that ties into music system, home assistant, and send spin, of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't have pricing or anything like that. [SPEAKER_00]: I, it's all, uh, I think it's about $50 a Australian. [SPEAKER_00]: So it seemed pretty cheap. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, looks pretty like form factor, uh, very nice and slick. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, yeah, just plug it into your speaker. [SPEAKER_00]: It's USB C powered, and where goes.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that was, um, where they've a shout out like, [SPEAKER_00]: I think that is a great way to try into it to be home because now you can do things like doorbell times, you've got some speakers that you want just like text speech notification, some home assistant, that is a nice cheap way to make those old speakers smart.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's also a great way to have a base for that for music assistant, which supports that sense of political, where you can actually have it connected to your speakers and then you want to cast over whatever audio you want to do, great go for it, whatever service you can do. [SPEAKER_01]: So, it's a good way of doing that, too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Apple iOS 27 is set to bring some new shortcuts features, so sleep focus mode is now available as a trigger for shortcut automations, which is previously missing. [SPEAKER_01]: So shortcuts will support automation notification triggers, which should allow you to trigger on any shortcut on your phone, sending a notification to your phone from home assistant.
[SPEAKER_01]: Shout out to Derek C. Even if you don't know who he is, he's got a pretty awesome blog. [SPEAKER_01]: Shout out to Derek for this one. [SPEAKER_01]: We'll even link in the show notes for to Derek's blog. [SPEAKER_01]: And where he kind of goes to the technical details on that one. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's, uh, [SPEAKER_01]: It's a pretty neat find.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, I don't have, I don't know, iPhone, use, I know you are, I believe. [SPEAKER_00]: But my wife is an iPhone user, and she's constantly losing her phone around the house. [SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things I've been wanting to do, was to have a find my button, like, and it just pings, I don't know, we've almost had it working there with the, what's Apple, find my cloud devices, [SPEAKER_00]: it's sort of finicky.
[SPEAKER_00]: It never really works. [SPEAKER_00]: My hope is that when she gets iOS 27, we'll be able to install this on her phone and then I'll be able to have home. [SPEAKER_00]: This isn't trigger and notification that can then have a shortcut on her phone to, I don't know, break, do not disturb and just set out a chime or something so that we can find the phone where it is in the house.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's that's the missing feature for us because we don't [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that would actually be good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's changed to focus setting bump up the volume and say hey Ding ding like up whatever and [SPEAKER_00]: All right, meltback time, YouTube, we had a few comments last month, Brandon Doyle, I'm a real estate agent, and you wouldn't believe how much people struggled with locks and lock boxes, so we're hunting to see in a response to the moving episode we put out where you had the lock box on your old house there and people were struggling to work at how to get into the house.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sellers will even manage to get locked out because someone locks the door between the garage and home, or they lock both the deadbolt and the handle, but the homeowner doesn't usually do both of them, so the lock on the handle then they can't get back into their house. [SPEAKER_00]: Even smart locks can be a struggle because they don't know how to wake them up, or hit the button to unlock after putting a code in if that is required.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luckily, it has an interesting solution where it's just a QR code and then it uses the internet on your phone for credentials and can unlock smart locks even from other companies. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a good solution for short-term rentals and shared entryways. [SPEAKER_00]: So this is actually cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're shout out to Locke that provide that and supporting other locked devices. [SPEAKER_00]: I am wondering if you could potentially build something with home misses here, [SPEAKER_00]: have a QR code or an NFC tag that opens up a URL to self-hosted servers you're running. [SPEAKER_00]: And you know, say, get someone to password or a pin.
[SPEAKER_00]: They enter that and if it validates whatever it's supposed to be, it can then make an API request to home Mrs. and unlock the lock. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that would be too hard to implement. [SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah Brandon, shout out to, thank you for that little tipit there, if you want to get more from Brandon as well, you can catch him on the technical difficulties podcast too, which is a great listen as well.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Andy's got his own real estate channel too, where he takes it through homes and stuff, so. [SPEAKER_01]: Seb says, hey guys, thanks for the shout out regarding my toothbrush charger automation. [SPEAKER_01]: Real hand mentioned and proving it by switching it off while it's fully charged, by measuring the current draw.
[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, most if not all toothbrush chargers use inductive charging, which means the charger is constantly pulling the same amperage 24-7, so there's no way to tell once it's charged. [SPEAKER_01]: They don't use a lot, which means from a power perspective it's not an issue, but as your guest mentioned, does affect the life of the battery.
[SPEAKER_01]: In them, as top-up charging is well known to affect battery life, so obviously something toothbrush manufacturers don't care about as it sells more units by this flawed design choice. [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't actually know that it pulls constant, I guess that makes sense, but that it pulls a constant draw.
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I guess I retract that statement because that would not work. [SPEAKER_01]: Unless your toothbrush also had an integration for [SPEAKER_01]: where you can pull the battery percentage of that and that which points it's 100 and you cut it off. [SPEAKER_00]: I would, if that point, I would just be like, you know, this chart, the truth brush once a day, right now, or something, then shut it off.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But maybe that's Facebook. [SPEAKER_00]: Alright Jonathan on YouTube as well, we're talking about your pool controllers, so Rohan, if you have an AquaLink pool controller at your new house, I would look into the AquaLink D device. [SPEAKER_00]: I paid lots of money to upgrade my pool automation equipment and it's still not working as I would like.
[SPEAKER_00]: If I was doing it over again, I would have tried the Aklink D first, also I'd invested in both a robot skimmer and a robot vacuum for the pool. [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't set up in home assistant, but for the most part they just do their thing. [SPEAKER_00]: They aren't cheap, but I find they keep the pool cleaner than the manual options and they save a bunch of time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Ron, you've been in your house, not too long. [SPEAKER_00]: Have you had a chance to look at the pool? [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, yeah, I have. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of learning that I was doing. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, this having a pool is completely foreign to me. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I actually just bought a robot vacuum and I guess a robot pool vacuum and a pool skimmer as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you did put just want you to get. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I haven't had the chance to throw it in the water yet. [SPEAKER_01]: So they're still on the box of my garage. [SPEAKER_01]: There's just again just 10,000 things to do still. [SPEAKER_01]: And then yeah, so now I'm I'm going to be playing with those two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you get them that integrate with home assistant? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but not one of them has a native integration, one of them doesn't. [SPEAKER_01]: I believe, so again, I don't even have home assistant set up yet. [SPEAKER_01]: So I need to get a bunch of stuff done before I can even get my home assistant fully rebuilt.
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, so that's going to be, that's going to be, [SPEAKER_01]: part of the to-do's. [SPEAKER_01]: I have the same thing on the robot vacuum side. [SPEAKER_01]: I've got my rover up set up and everything. [SPEAKER_01]: I got the new S20, Saras S20. [SPEAKER_01]: And again, I use it manually today with the app, which they're absolutely pretty decent.
[SPEAKER_01]: At least compared to the EcoX1 that I was using before. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, I'd rather not use the app, um, and rather just have everything goes through homosysin, but, you know, here we are. [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, as far as the aqua link, uh, piece of ghost, I don't have an aqua link controller.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's something else, but I do, uh, I did actually look at, um, some of the, some of their products, um, and it does look interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, maybe thanks for that Jonathan, appreciate that. [SPEAKER_00]: Zach has said, I don't see how a seller ever could hand off a fully functioning custom smartphone to a typical buyer without committing to years of insufferable tech support obligation.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's no amount of documentation you could provide that wouldn't result in complaint phone calls as soon as the first light switched itself off unexpectedly, a device went unresponsive or a battery drained. [SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if any seller has ever found a unicorn enthusiast hobbyist by a ready and eager to take responsibility for such a system.
[SPEAKER_00]: Zack, I also wonder the same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I absolutely agree, like I've thought about this too, right? [SPEAKER_00]: There. [SPEAKER_00]: even things that aren't connected, you know, like what if I have some Zigbee blinds, right, motors in the blinds, and they have RF remotes. [SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, once it's taking the Zigbee out of it, if there are RF remotes, unpaired from the blind, [SPEAKER_00]: you know, how's the customer going to know to find that random instruction manual in LA Express and press the word combo, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess once you sold the house, technically not your problem right, they bite as is. [SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes there's a product that's cheap enough to, there's usually no markings or anything either, right, if it's just some random product you found on on all the Express or something like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, [SPEAKER_01]: But on the other side of this, I also got an email or a text from my realtor yesterday from the people that purchased our old house, you know, being like, hey, do you have an instruction manual for the thermostat in the house? [SPEAKER_01]: It was like, I think that's like, it's super common these days, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm like, and again, these folks aren't technically savvy at all, whatever, right? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like, but I'm like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it's the name is on it, just Google it. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's a, yep, but, and I tried to be nice. [SPEAKER_01]: I wiped all of my preferences, but I didn't wipe, like I didn't factory reset it, so it's still got all the HVAC settings and stuff on it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've liked the type of AC here, whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, so it's, but it's got everything else wiped out. [SPEAKER_01]: Beren says, I posted on Reddit about using Claude to almost completely manage my homocystin. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, it's not perfect, but it's amazing how good it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's on its own completely rebuilt my kitchen kiosk dashboard that has a lot of features on its own. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll just figure out why an automation that notifies me when I leave my garage door open was alerting me even though it was closed and last but not least, I figured out how one of the homosistent built components was using a wrong IP address and then fix that.
[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that Cloud can do this now and it's only going to get better, I can see a future where Apple and or Google has a smart home hub that easily rivals what home system can do today. [SPEAKER_01]: Not basic stuff pretty much just as pretty much as complex as people wanted or needed to manage their homes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I totally agree. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's, first of all, it's really cool that you actually got it to do that, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Where you're like, hey, make me a dashboard. [SPEAKER_01]: I tried that in the past where I'm like, build me a home assistant dashboard based on all the entities you see.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just, it came out not great. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I'm glad to see that. [SPEAKER_01]: That's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: It's great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad to see that it's kind of upskilled itself, essentially, to build better home assistant dashboards.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then yeah, like in terms of like being able to figure out why automations are broken or whatever, that's totally, uh, I think in the wheelhouse, and it's, but it's pretty great saves you from troubleshooting a billion. [SPEAKER_01]: time to read. [SPEAKER_00]: We just had Rob on we did recording for it's early for our Patreon members and members on Apple Music and YouTube.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the, my take away from Spectre Rob was, you know, he actually had his AI assistant, you know, document his automations and work at the intent behind them. [SPEAKER_00]: and that was something I've taken away from that conversation. [SPEAKER_00]: So look at that episode coming out next week.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think this is where I want to head to next to what I want to be able to have my AI agent, you know, audit my automations go, you know what? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't need logic, errors that you can detect in my automations, like what? [SPEAKER_00]: would you improve, maybe I do have an alert that just isn't making sense, or an IP address that's wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have since upgrading to 2026.9, I have hit 80 in my number of notifications. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I had 66 repairs that need to be addressed or something. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, you know, I'm a assistant and yeah, like it's it's working fine, but you know, it's just a whole bunch of this needs to be margarited.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is deprecated. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I just it'd be cool if you can be like, hey, just go do this for me. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: On the note that he, I can see a future where Apple and or Google has a smart home hub that easily rivals what home business can do today.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, like Mass appeal. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think we've always dreamt about the world where we can talk to AI and say, you know, give me this and it's actually doing it, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Power of home Mrs. at the moment though, is, you know, home Mrs. and now is so many protocols, so many devices, like even in 2020 and 6.9 we're about to talk about Modbus.
[SPEAKER_00]: Home Mrs. has, you know, serial devices, it's got Zigbee, Madda, it's talking everything. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a Google or Apple don't spend the time and burn the AI tokens to want to invest in all those different protocols or are they just going to try and keep the experience locked down and on that golden path as much as they can.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe there'll be a future open source project in the future that maybe we'll fork off from home, this isn't all take learnings from home, this is that may come to rival, but at the moment, in my opinion, I don't see a closed source or a corporation beating. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a assistant or an open source in at the moment.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think my assistant is now leapfropped a lot of other ecosystem systems because it is so open and so has so much potential to keep growing. [SPEAKER_01]: First of all, I completely agree with your fellow, but I think the other piece there is that [SPEAKER_01]: They went Google and Amazon and these guys build for build a technology.
[SPEAKER_01]: They build for everybody, right? [SPEAKER_01]: They need to hit mass market. [SPEAKER_01]: They need to hit, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: And it needs to work for your grandmother as easily as it works for, you know, the most technologically savvy person, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So that's, I think that's, you know, again, never say never.
[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty, that's a pretty big task, great to be able to try and do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they can, I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: But I'd be surprised if they went down that route to hit how we're users and do those kind of things. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot harder to do that without compromising their kind of design language or ethos for a lot of those things.
[SPEAKER_00]: So cool, let's talk some new features. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, I think we should start with 2026.9. [SPEAKER_00]: It's here. [SPEAKER_00]: But I do have a warning. [SPEAKER_00]: So I upgraded to the beta. [SPEAKER_00]: And last month, we're on, I think I mentioned that I had my AI agent, migrate my production instance of home business and over to proxmox.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is the first time I've used proxmox. [SPEAKER_00]: the first upgrade to beta that I've done since using ProxMox and it didn't go so well. [SPEAKER_00]: So when I upgraded to 2026.9, I the install worked fine. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm just reloaded, but then I couldn't log into home assistant.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just the login screen didn't appear for me. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, cool. [SPEAKER_00]: What's going on? [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a case issue, maybe the tail scale. [SPEAKER_00]: Apple hadn't loaded properly, tried the IP address, no, same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Looked in the developers and there was a random JavaScript era, like Unknown Era, and there's a TypeScript promise that failed.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: Cool. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to get around that now, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So I was like, cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Let me boot into safe mode. [SPEAKER_00]: So I luckily used still had access to the console via proxmox. [SPEAKER_00]: So I did some googling, found command, rebooted into safe mode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, because I couldn't load the front end still tried to load. [SPEAKER_00]: I still had that JavaScript error. [SPEAKER_00]: I still couldn't log into safe mode because the JavaScript error. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, oh, [SPEAKER_00]: Cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, remember this is beta.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm on beta zero, the very first beta for 20 weeks not that it had been cut. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, no problem. [SPEAKER_00]: I will just route downgrade back to 2026.8 or 2026.7. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I was using. [SPEAKER_00]: Try to do that unsuccessfully, could not downgrade for whatever reason.
[SPEAKER_00]: I then did some more googling. [SPEAKER_00]: I did everything right before I installed the beta. [SPEAKER_00]: I hit the menu back up before that. [SPEAKER_00]: I found the command to restore. [SPEAKER_00]: But because I couldn't paste into the terminal in my proxmox console, I had to type out the backup name.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm pretty sure I got the backup name correctly. [SPEAKER_00]: It's still set the backup couldn't be found, so it couldn't manually install that. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I was a bit, I was stressing at this time, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, this was my production instance of home assistant.
[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't log in. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything was working like, I was walking around the house, lots of turning on. [SPEAKER_00]: So home assistant was up and fine. [SPEAKER_00]: I just couldn't log into it. [SPEAKER_00]: So I jumped out of the discord, we're not to the baddie channel there, Andrew Flock had actually posted on the message that he needed to change their proxmox CPU from KVM 64 down to X86 64 V2 AES.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, as a first time proxmox user, I had no idea whatever this meant, where to find these settings. [SPEAKER_00]: I eventually found them as pretty straightforward in the UI there. [SPEAKER_00]: And sure enough, my CPU was set to KVM64. [SPEAKER_00]: Apparently, there is some install scripts for proxmox, as I said, I just AI2 this, but there's some older ones out there that may set.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got a fault CPU when creating the proxmox VM2KVM64. [SPEAKER_00]: or if you've had an older VM around for a while, yours may be set to KVM64. [SPEAKER_00]: If that is you before upgrading to 2026.9, I would encourage you to go in if your system is capable of and setting your CPU to use at X86, 64 V2 AES.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm unsure of the technical reasons exactly haven't dealt too far into it. [SPEAKER_00]: I got my access to home misses and back and jump straight into testing that out. [SPEAKER_00]: But my brief understanding is that there is a new Python version climate and that KVM64 is no longer supported.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I think there is going to be a bit of discussion around developers on what they're going to do around that at the moment, you know, sort of it will become a blocker. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, that's my little warning before upgrading to 2026, something nine, that was my make sure I had.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's easy enough fix, I guess, but yeah, just, you know, require some digging. [SPEAKER_01]: I said, did you use your, [SPEAKER_01]: agent to ask and to figure out what was going on at all. [SPEAKER_00]: I did not, I did not, I, that was going to be my next option, but no, I thought, you know, let's just get, surely someone on the beta channel, like I literally just installed it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And interestingly, once I got into, once I was able to get into the UI, [SPEAKER_00]: While I was struggling with this, they had actually pushed out another beta version. [SPEAKER_00]: So I went from BZR to B1. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if that is being, that has was fixing my issue either, but I was supposed to also log in, I was unable to trigger the next download for B1.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I did not use my AI for that one. [SPEAKER_00]: Probably should have. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure it won't do you personally. [SPEAKER_00]: It's that. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, signing up for a Navocasa Cloud account just got so much easier. [SPEAKER_01]: So from within your home assistant dashboard, now as soon as you select the confirmation link that's sent to you right email, home assistant logs you automatically, so you can just go straight to setting up remote access and voice and backups and all those cool stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's nothing extra you need to do on top of there. [SPEAKER_00]: You can just hit the ground running and speaking of home assistant cloud there home assistant cloud has a new speech to text provider It's currently a lab's feature. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're a never-cut subscriber going to the labs [SPEAKER_00]: go into and enable.News takes a speech provider when it is enabled any audio from your voice commands will be processed by Sonny Oaks rather than the current provider whichever the navigator is using.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, well, no because we're being testing it, they believe it copes better with accents, background noise, and languages other than English. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're a non-English speaker, there's probably a big most benefit you. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking forward to my voice peeing getting better background noise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Removal, because I find, you know, like background noise and on the voice page is just not great at the moment, so hopefully this will improve that. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, enabling labs and ensure your voice assistant is set to use home missing the cloud as your speech to text provider.
[SPEAKER_00]: As long as you've got all those set up, you'll be using that new system and hopefully it's better than the other one. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's, I think they were using, I want to say they were using Azure or something that's out before, but not sure, but yeah, that's cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Modbus, Modbus, if you're not familiar with it, it's a common language used in industrial and electrical devices to talk to each other. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's not new at all, it's been around since the 1970s. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's used a lot in stuff like solar inverters, power meter is HVAC systems, batteries systems, PLCs, building automation, dot kind of stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: And essentially, a controller like Home Assistant can ask a device for things like, hey, what's your power usage or what temperature are you reading or, you know, those kind of things give me something from a sensor that's seeing something. [SPEAKER_01]: essentially, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it does that by reading specific numbered registers, which you can think of like little memory locations having those values.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's two versions of that that you'll normally encounter, Modbus RTU, which runs over an RS485 serial connection, and Modbus TCP, which carries the same thing over a Ethernet or a IP network. [SPEAKER_01]: So think of it as like a shared language with a bunch of number at mailboxes and homosysin basically knows to ask, hey, what's in mailbox 42?
[SPEAKER_01]: But the device manufacturers documentation will need to tell you what mailbox 42 actually has. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, oh, it's the solar output rather than the battery temperature. [SPEAKER_01]: Stuff like that. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's more generic than having specific entities or anything like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, in the past, Modbus was in a homocystin and required a ton of complex YML. [SPEAKER_01]: And then, oh, it's happening as a lot of people are typically copying and pasting from forums or whatever other sources, without them fully understanding it, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So, now, homocystin has infrastructure for shared Modbus connections.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, essentially, it acts as proxy. [SPEAKER_01]: So that means multiple integrations can share a single mod bus connection, including serial and TCP, and then this mod bus library enables developers so now to start building device specific libraries and homosystem integrations easier. [SPEAKER_01]: So, the device-specific integrations can be like the right device classes, energy dashboard support required sequences of setting changes or rights and wherever it supported discovery as well.
[SPEAKER_01]: So a few things are launching with this. [SPEAKER_01]: That's the fronious so far flex it and stable integrations and likely more to come, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So again, especially if you're dealing with things like solar and stuff like that. [SPEAKER_01]: You might be able to actually like directly into it to that might be kind of cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is fantastic. [SPEAKER_00]: I think this is like another big building block. [SPEAKER_00]: And to my point before about, you know, where the big players like Amazon and Google won't go, right? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they want to get their hands dirty with this stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: Whereas an open source project does.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is really, yeah, I'm, it's taking a lot of pain away from users. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, not like that's not what we already want to get involved in, yeah, yeah, yeah, but like the serial like infrared and Nambod bus, like if I'm using some can take all of the, you know, the [SPEAKER_00]: the dirty work away from me and just make it simple.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely. [SPEAKER_00]: Like now, I will look at it for I'm just inverting if I'm gonna get sold off, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, as long as I know it's split, I'm not last in, I'm now confident that I'm just, we'll have my back going into those things. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I totally agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, especially if you've got different types of controllers, or, you know, again, my case is a great example, where it's like, hey, I've moved into a new house, maybe the previous owner had some, [SPEAKER_01]: stuff where they would have used a mod bus network. [SPEAKER_01]: Great, great.
[SPEAKER_01]: I could just go plug in to it and say, get me, bring it into home assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, absolutely. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, speaking of which, if you have just moved into your house or if you're looking to upgrade to smart home, you really can't go past the zoos. [SPEAKER_00]: Then you 800 series long-waved motion dimmer, the Xan [SPEAKER_00]: It's a full-featured Z-wave demo with a built-in motion sensor and ambient light sensor.
[SPEAKER_00]: So your lights can automatically respond when someone enters the room while also taking the current light level into account. [SPEAKER_00]: That means you can create smarter lighting automations without installing separate motion and luck sensors around the room. [SPEAKER_00]: The XN12 also supports scene control using multi-taps, holds and release actions, giving you plenty of ways to control lights and scenes directly from the switch.
[SPEAKER_00]: And with smart bulb mode, it can also work with smart bulbs like Philips Hue without cutting power to them at the wall. [SPEAKER_00]: Zeus are an official or works with home assistant partner, and they've also helped Nabukasa test the home assistant connect ZWE2 by providing Zwave a long-range devices.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you know their products are designed with home assistant users in mind. [SPEAKER_00]: And if you need more control over your plug-in devices, Zeus also has their Zen 20, 800 LR long-range power strip, which turns a single outlet into multiple, individually controllable smart sockets.
[SPEAKER_00]: specific for under a desk, behind a TV, or in a server rack for controlling and monitoring network gear, charges, lamps, game consoles, and other always-armed devices. [SPEAKER_00]: These products are backed by US-based technical support and an extended 5-year warranty when you register your device within 30 days of purchase.
[SPEAKER_00]: for the best prices on all the Zeus products head over to thesmartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_00]: That's thesmartesthouse.com. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't know why more people don't have like that smart bulb mode. [SPEAKER_01]: I know there's like switches out there that turn on. [SPEAKER_01]: I sorry, you'll get, you can get separate smart switches but like if I just have this light switch and I upgrade to a smart bulb, why can't I just use that, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: I think like it also depends in a region. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm pretty sure in Australia, it might be against code to not be able to cut power, like if there's a bulb, you have to be able to physically cut power to it at the switch. [SPEAKER_00]: I could be wrong there. [SPEAKER_00]: That's just what I've seen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Some people mentioned in comments, which makes sense to me. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, that will be something Australia would do. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: That's cool. [SPEAKER_01]: Security dashboard or some new features there where you can view your most used entities and based on the severity and active alerts.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll just contribute to my community member, but the feature was on home assistance roadmap. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's now here. [SPEAKER_00]: the the severity and active alerts look cool you can also have like they flashed like actually for attention to themselves they look really nice on that dashboard.
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't used the security dashboard yet but I think that is going to be one of my next missions to do right like start activating security dashboard. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah you know what I'm just going to while you're talking to me the next one I'm going to get my assistant job as to see if you can do it for me because I love it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love it. [SPEAKER_01]: I love it. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll do this next one then. [SPEAKER_01]: So activity in history areas get a UI overhaul. [SPEAKER_01]: So both pages now share single sources, share a single sources panel on the left side. [SPEAKER_01]: So that merge is your target picking.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's where your pick your floor is in areas. [SPEAKER_01]: And all that stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: with filtering by domain device class and integrations, and now you can narrow a whole area down. [SPEAKER_01]: So a timeline view gives you details, including what automation triggered a change, and there's also more details available when you're viewing items from the more details dialog, what triggered the change, automation that performed in action, and what took place in the change there.
[SPEAKER_01]: So all it's all there and it links to the automation traces there too if you need them. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's actually a really neat bringing together of all of these different things. [SPEAKER_01]: The child troubleshoot everything, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So it's nice and quick. [SPEAKER_00]: So.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I really like the UI on this one. [SPEAKER_00]: So a few, I find, I feel like the activity history took a backward step a few releases ago. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I always used to be able to go into my device details view and see what automation triggered something, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And it was clearly laid out, you know, turned on by this automation.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then that went away and it was replaced by the automation icon and you had to hover over the icon to see what the automation name was and it just didn't look as nice. [SPEAKER_00]: But now with this update, it is so much clearer. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you click on it when it turned on, it tells you, okay motion sensor turned on, this automation triggered and the light turned on.
[SPEAKER_00]: So fantastic work there. [SPEAKER_00]: So [SPEAKER_00]: Another one that I am really impressed with in 2026.9, there is now keyboard navigation and there's sounds in graphs in home assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: Now this is probably not going to affect, you know, 95% of people that use home assistant.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if you have accessibility issues, maybe blind. [SPEAKER_00]: the graphs in home sent can now respond. [SPEAKER_00]: So when you hover over a graph, depending on where the barons, if it's a lower, high bar, there will be a different sound. [SPEAKER_00]: So that visually impaired users can actually hear.
[SPEAKER_00]: how that graph moves right. [SPEAKER_00]: So you know, if you think of light level or temperature right throughout the day, if they want to see what was a temperature at 12 p.m. compared to 12 a.m., there'll be two different sounds and they can compare like all right with hiring and lower it at at those times.
[SPEAKER_00]: And with keyboard navigation, that allows, you know, people with [SPEAKER_00]: that use voice to navigate around or other accessibility devices to navigate around, it's all accessible on the keyboard. [SPEAKER_00]: No mouse, so you'd be clicking in a certain area to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's just those little things that people don't necessarily think about.
[SPEAKER_00]: And in this case, open sources, moving forward with that, right? [SPEAKER_00]: maybe not. [SPEAKER_01]: The other neat thing that's also in here is from a from a visualization respectively is a new matter map. [SPEAKER_01]: So there's a new show map button in the matter settings that displays a graph of the matter fabric.
[SPEAKER_01]: So essentially what it is is it's a visualization of the matter network itself. [SPEAKER_01]: So keep in mind that means it doesn't it's not separating [SPEAKER_01]: Wi-Fi matter over thread, matter over BLE, they'll all be there to gather, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Even though they might not be using the same transport, which is in this case was Wi-Fi or thread or whatever, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so basically it'll be there, but again, it's a matter specific view to say, okay, all of these devices are here and this is where they're talking and so on and so forth. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's actually really, again, another slick view that they've built out there. [SPEAKER_00]: If you are an LG WebOS TV user, there is now a switch available in home.
[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't allowing you to turn the screen off while keeping the sound running. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, how do you want to listen to music or something? [SPEAKER_00]: Don't you need a picture on the screen? [SPEAKER_00]: You just want to have the TV on as the controller? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Real link had some additions there too. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's got floodlight on-off schedule times. [SPEAKER_01]: a button to synchronize the camera's clock or you can choose a anti-flicker frequency and the ability to enable or disable the tamper or alarm from there too. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's a nice addition there to the real-in-contegration.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's cool because now you can just have the tamper alarms, like, tied into your alarm panel, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you're high, and you don't necessarily need the tamper alarm on the camera, so that's great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the flood light on off schedule times, like the flood light for me on those really cameras, like I would wake like I find myself waking up in the morning.
[SPEAKER_00]: And, or it could be the middle of the day, I'll go out and I'll look at a camera and the floodlights on like why is that light still on? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So if I can now change those times, that will be fantastic. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, Proxmox has added a button to pause a VM.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's handy if you need to free up resources temporarily. [SPEAKER_00]: So for example, maybe you got Flex, strings, and transcoding. [SPEAKER_00]: And you need to pause everything else on the machine. [SPEAKER_00]: So you can have just Flex do that stream for you. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that can now be fully automated with my assistant.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks. [SPEAKER_01]: Melee, I can now add actions to update and delete meal plan entry. [SPEAKER_01]: So you can manage next week's generous from an automation [SPEAKER_01]: instead of opening the app, that's a nice one there. [SPEAKER_01]: If you haven't used melee it's pretty cool. [SPEAKER_00]: MQTT has now got its own dashboard as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is similar to the set-wave Zigbee. [SPEAKER_00]: matter everything's getting a dashboard right so it's got its own dashboard directly on the settings page so instead of having to go into the tools and the options it's all there right there. [SPEAKER_00]: The topic subscribe you now format messages as code with a copy button and a shortcut takes you straight to the broker connection settings so that's all there on the MP2D panel.
[SPEAKER_01]: The media browser, too, got some updates there. [SPEAKER_01]: So searching the media browser now reaches media players with their own library. [SPEAKER_01]: So things like music systems, sonos, squeeze box, jellyfish, and so on, instead of only searching the media sources. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's great.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that is great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm like, yeah, I've got sonos and get it. [SPEAKER_00]: That's been a frustration for me. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, the Result Confirmation will now list the automations and scripts that are currently running instead of a vague warning that some market interruptives.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now you'll know for sure that when you restart home, this is a script and the automation that's going to stop working halfway through. [SPEAKER_00]: And I assume that if none of those are true, you'll just say, get safe to restart a way you go. [SPEAKER_00]: That's a good quality of life improvement there.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's talk some new integrations. [SPEAKER_01]: Best in and next blue. [SPEAKER_01]: So you can connect those EV charges to a home assistant over BLE using home assistant's built-in Bluetooth support or any SP home Bluetooth proxy. [SPEAKER_01]: You can also connect the next blue EV charger to same thing and discover a charger so that when you just have to connect your account to there, so that discovers the charges on your account and provides some read-only sensors [SPEAKER_01]: session and lifetime energy usage.
[SPEAKER_00]: So via prism, you can now monitor a severe prism EVU wallbox over its local MQTT API, with sensors for charging status, power, current, voltage and session and lifetime energy. [SPEAKER_00]: You only need the MQTT topic, which the app should already give you, and charging controls are planned for a future release, so watch out for that.
[SPEAKER_01]: collection images. [SPEAKER_01]: So you can turn a folder from a media source into a dynamic image entity. [SPEAKER_01]: So homelessness, no pick a random picture from the folder. [SPEAKER_01]: And you can show that as a changing image on your dashboard or use it as a view background. [SPEAKER_00]: That is great.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is cool if you have like a whole bunch of, you know, like I like fresh things like for example, I've got the canvas mural. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the same picture every day. [SPEAKER_00]: So I have home is randomized it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you've got a home assistant dashboard that you have as set up as somewhere that is prominently displayed, naked display are a random, you know, photo from the family up them.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I'm surprised it's taken this long to get that there. [SPEAKER_00]: So, that's good. [SPEAKER_00]: No, you're right. [SPEAKER_00]: Ah, flow it. [SPEAKER_00]: You can now monitor and control your flow it ventilation system from home assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: You can adjust fan speeds, switch between preset modes such as auto and boost, and [SPEAKER_01]: Hot spring so you can now monitor and control a hot spring spy equipped with the hot spring connected spot kit 2 module directly over your locals, now worth which I like.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you've got an ISEO, ISEO, I'll go Bluetooth smart lock, which is common on armored doors in Italy and Switzerland, thinking it's access lock into the home Mrs. Lobork and managing its users through actions is now available. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm so yeah, an armored door, a, yeah, and Switzerland in Italy, yeah, there you go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Libra and MS, so you can bring your Libra and MS network monitoring instance into homelessness now. [SPEAKER_01]: So this is the initial release. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's a binary sensor for essentially for the online status of each monitor device. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, I'm at doors. [SPEAKER_00]: I just want to use that just another word.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a security door like a screen door, or are we talking like a fortified? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm imagining like, or if I do prove. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like a safe door. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would assume it's gonna be my pattern. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be not do go rabbit hole after this episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Samsung TV via X-link, so you can control Samsung TVs through their RS 232 serial port, which Samsung, of course they do, they have a marketing term for it, which is X-link. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, plug in your serial cable, or your USB to serial adapter, or it is behind my basic serial proxy, you can now control the Samsung TV.
[SPEAKER_00]: I believe it's mostly in the U.S. that these Samsung TVs have those serial ports on, so I just check the back of your TV so if you've had one there. [SPEAKER_01]: and last, but not least, specialized turbo. [SPEAKER_01]: So you can connect a specialized turbo e-bike over BLE, covering the TCU1 and TCX1 through TCX4 models with detailed ride and battery telemetry.
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you go, one of those models of specialized turbo bikes, here you go. [SPEAKER_01]: Think that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there is some broken changes, nothing too scary that I noticed in the broken changes so to check them out, but I don't think there's anything too scary in this release.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was actually surprised. [SPEAKER_00]: We got through that all that so quickly. [SPEAKER_00]: There you go. [SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot in there. [SPEAKER_00]: We're getting up to the the median of the year now. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's see what the the rest of the year brings more.
