[SPEAKER_02]: Sign up, flip a switch, done, and you can access your homebeasts and from anywhere.
[SPEAKER_02]: What's more, you also get secure off-site backups, voice control with the Amazon Echo, or Google Home devices, and the ability to supercharge your DIY voice assistant. [SPEAKER_02]: And here's the part we love. [SPEAKER_02]: Your subscription pays the developers behind home assistant, is behind and the open home foundation.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's the best few dollars a month you'll spend on your smart home. [SPEAKER_02]: Start your 31-day trial today, just open your home assistant settings, go to the cloud page, or sign up at nebucusher.com. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a link in the description. [SPEAKER_02]: This episode is also sponsored by our friends at Apollo Automation, makers of open-source smart home sensors built for the home assistant ecosystem.
[SPEAKER_02]: The official ESP home starter kit is now available, and it is the easiest entry into making your own sensors. [SPEAKER_02]: It is designed and built by the Open Home Foundation and Apollo Automation. [SPEAKER_02]: Profits help to find the open home foundation, which owns and maintains home assistant, it's behind music assistant, and 250 other open source projects.
[SPEAKER_02]: While they're there, be sure to check out Apollo Automation's cast one, built for music assistant, and to make anything with a line-in input, a smart speaker. [SPEAKER_02]: If you're deep into home assistant or just getting started, definitely check them out at ApolloAutomation.com. [SPEAKER_02]: Try it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much for joining us. [SPEAKER_02]: Whereabouts, uh, you, uh, the world coming from today. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Kalahashi, Florida. [SPEAKER_02]: Very nice. [SPEAKER_02]: And, uh, it tells us a bit about yourself. [SPEAKER_02]: What got you into home automation and then by exception, high [SPEAKER_00]: Well, my original introduction to home automation was with X10 many, many years ago.
[SPEAKER_02]: Nice. [SPEAKER_00]: Then was it into it for a while? [SPEAKER_00]: My wife decided she wanted to have the garage door open for when she came home. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I set to figure out exactly how to do that and stumble across home assessment in the process. [SPEAKER_00]: And we had a mic, you, and I'm kind of ashamed to say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it had a mic, you. [SPEAKER_01]: We've all, we've all been there, straight. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't feel too bad. [SPEAKER_00]: So we got that and I got home assistant set up with it in about a week later, they killed the API. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: Nice. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that was, that was how I got started. [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess that was a, I'd be turning point for you then to go, okay, how do I, uh, don't let this happen again to me, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was just getting into home assistant at the time, so I wasn't paying much attention to what was going to run locally and what wasn't, I had two yellow light bulbs that had to run through the cloud at the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: I hadn't had two yellow circles set up yet. [SPEAKER_00]: So when I first started, yeah, it was a lot of stuff that I started pay better attention to about what was going to get cut off on me. [SPEAKER_00]: And so right now, everything except for the voice is local. [SPEAKER_01]: Nice. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Nice. [SPEAKER_01]: That's actually pretty impressive if you've done that much. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I've gone out of my way to to make sure that you know I've done that stuff done happen again in place listening to your product cast and some others I hear people complaining about it all the time with cloud service is getting shut off.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I try to avoid them. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not worried about privacy per se, but it's more of a you know pain in the butt thing when your stuff doesn't work. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't really own the product, then. [SPEAKER_02]: If someone could enrich into your home and stop the product from working, do you really own it, you know?
[SPEAKER_02]: Have you still, are you still running X10 in your home? [SPEAKER_00]: No, no, it's been several decades since I touched anything with X10 in it. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I started home assisted about three years ago. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was, it was right after Lovelace was, you know, the standard UI and for everything is about when I came in.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't have to do much anything involving ammo. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I, and that's where my next question was going to be, like, how much yam are you using in time business using any yam a little or is it? [SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple of things in the configuration file, but not much.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm super great at copy and pasting things, so that's about as far as my attention span goes when I have to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I copy the ML in it works and then I forget about it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Chapter 2, go back around yourself. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've been in IT since a little before 2000.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've done various things all the way through the last big stuff I did was when I was doing disaster recovery for the state of Florida. [SPEAKER_00]: I helped Nina couple other people help build a secondary data center for the state where we could just press the O-Crap button and everything would shift over to the other data center.
[SPEAKER_00]: uh... currently i'm doing virtualization and storage for the floor to bar very cool have you gives that experience to in your small time with disaster recovery uh... but besides having uh... backup in the cloud now not much i guess you could say most of my network is set up with all that when you look at from the battery standpoint i've got uh... low to batteries around the house to make sure that all the technology stays up in the [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that's the entry point right like first get the UPS running get the the backup batteries and then you realize Okay, now how do we get high availability?
[SPEAKER_02]: How do I ensure that you know? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not quite boy that concerned about it to go to the point of high availability. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep, that's fair. [SPEAKER_01]: How about virtualization and all that? [SPEAKER_01]: I know you mentioned you that professionally, but are you doing that at home for home assistant and so on too?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, homie says, and I'm running on a mini PC. [SPEAKER_00]: It's running on bare metal, but I've got Windows to main setup in a couple of Linux boxes and things like that that I'm either doing through VMWare through Prox Mox. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep. [SPEAKER_01]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, I forgot to warn you.
[SPEAKER_00]: There might be a cath that shows up. [SPEAKER_02]: That's okay. [SPEAKER_02]: So what is your home assistant or your smartphone set up look like today? [SPEAKER_02]: You know, you started on X10. [SPEAKER_02]: What's what he's sort of running in the smartphone today? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, as I was progressing, you know, through my learning of home assistant, I learned that you can have too many Wi-Fi bulbs.
[SPEAKER_00]: That became a problem. [SPEAKER_00]: So I switched, I'm just been the progress of moving all my bulbs over to Zigbee. [SPEAKER_00]: ended up having to upgrade my network to the unify system to support all the Wi-Fi devices I have going through now. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've got like in 20 or 30s it could be devices, temperature sensors, humidity sensors, lights, probably about that much in Wi-Fi bulbs.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got a [SPEAKER_00]: and then the rest are just light switches and outlets and stuff and I'm going with Zigbee as much as I can when which is pretty much everything and one and the only thing that landed to time and money. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I feel you there. [SPEAKER_02]: Have you got a rule around the Zigbee stuff?
[SPEAKER_02]: I know that there are so many brands, so many ecosystems and many ecosystems in itself. [SPEAKER_00]: I've settled on third reality's products for the most part. [SPEAKER_00]: I like there's their really dependable and range as excellent on them. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a temperature and humidity sensor, probably 20 meters outside the house and it's picking off off a light bulb in my closet and it works great and all the bulbs are third reality as well as the temperature sensors and motion and vibration sensors and things like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I like their ethos of, they like to keep things simple, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So there are, for those of you that don't know, they're listening, third reality is also the company that kind of got around this whole Chamberlain security stuff with all their, you know, they're doing all the security, they're changing the encryption standards.
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you just just made a little button that pushes your remote? [SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, yeah, great. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm using your remote, you guys saw that. [SPEAKER_00]: You can have one, it's great. [SPEAKER_01]: it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it
[SPEAKER_02]: just push the button yeah it's got a house switchbot started switchbot was the exact same thing right there first of all things I've got a fingerbot in my drawer of shame yes where we keep all of the stuff we bought that we'd realize we shouldn't have yeah I think I have some crisp in their packet unopened grand plan to use it yeah my mind's unopened as well my fingerbot [SPEAKER_02]: mint condition.
[SPEAKER_02]: How do you manage, you know, if you've got light bulbs on, or is it be are you using smart switches in front of them, or are you using dump switches still? [SPEAKER_00]: And in some places I am when I want to be able, yeah, I don't have any dimmers in wall. [SPEAKER_00]: So if I want, you know, dimming ability, I'll put smart bulbs in, but like in the bedroom, I don't need disco colors or anything like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I've just got smart switches in the walls, [SPEAKER_00]: That runs, you know, the fan and just normal bolts in the bedroom, but every other, all the other lights in the house are smart bulbs. [SPEAKER_02]: The, and the smart bulbs do you want to be colored or it's just, it's easier. [SPEAKER_00]: I did, I've never used them, but there's something in it that I want, I want to have the ability to do it though, I've never done it.
[SPEAKER_02]: I can, I can feel you there, like, it's, it's good to keep your options open. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: That was something I got, I struggled with when I, when my purchase dayhouse was like, [SPEAKER_02]: I have the ability now, like I could just put a smart switch in there, but then I lose the ability to do the spark color, but I know the switches are going to be more use of friendly and I'm not going to have as many issues with them.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I opt for the smart switches, but you know, there are, like maybe there's like holiday times, you know, where it would be cool to have, you know, like a green and red and you know, for Christmas and all that, but yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: the only time I've used the lights like that is I've used them for a household alerts like the laundry's done or the dryer's done and right behind me there's a light in the foyer that changes from green to yellow to red depending on how full the litter box is so we can't always see the flash and light on the litter robot but we can see the glow of the light from you know [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think the notification colors are like fantastic use case for those light bulbs.
[SPEAKER_02]: I know I've certainly gone that route as well, you know like green for the washing machine pink for the dishwasher. [SPEAKER_02]: So I've read if the internet's down and I'm just trying to recover it. [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, there's a whole bunch of, yeah, color codes can do. [SPEAKER_02]: Have you got special colors for things like the litter box and washing machine as well?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, just the the color combinations we have for the litter box and I experimented for a while with having different colored lights for, you know, I could said washing or whatever being done, but I found it to be far more effective to have the voices systems announced it now. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I, I'm one of those people that you know actually gets up and does the thing when the announcement says to do it, so it works great for me. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, see that's right. [SPEAKER_01]: That's where you and I defer. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, hey, something's done. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, all right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's great. [SPEAKER_02]: You're just ignore it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: The cat little robot you've got there is that integrated in-time system locally or using a third party API for that. [SPEAKER_00]: I am using the third party API for that. [SPEAKER_00]: I know drones often ESP.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know that it would be all that hard to make it run locally. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what chips [SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, somebody somebody may have figured it out. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I've either heard through this podcast or read something about it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it sounds familiar.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I also, when I get bored, I'll go browse through hacks, just to see if there's anything new. [SPEAKER_00]: So that may have seen it there as well. [SPEAKER_02]: That is so dangerous to me. [SPEAKER_02]: I go down something like Hacks Rabbits Hole. [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm like, oh, that sounds interesting.
[SPEAKER_02]: I need this yesterday and I'll download it and not look at it forever. [SPEAKER_02]: And then it just, I'm always updating it and never using it. [SPEAKER_00]: what's worse is when you buy the equipment so you can use the hacks integration that you found and then don't do it. [SPEAKER_02]: Sound like you're just making experience.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, that's, yeah, I said I had a box, but if you see the white containers behind me, there's a stack of containers, yeah, yeah, I learned a lot and going through it by making just about every mistake you possibly could and still have a functioning smart home. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, I've been there.
[SPEAKER_02]: So tell me about your philosophy for your smart home. [SPEAKER_02]: Did you start with light? [SPEAKER_02]: Did you want to was there an end goal in mind that you wanted? [SPEAKER_02]: Or is this just a hobby to slowly pick way up? [SPEAKER_00]: It first started with wife wanting the garage to open or be able to open it through Carvely.
[SPEAKER_00]: that started me down the rabbit hole and I said I fired up home assistant and I saw all the stuff it found in my house and got so excited I almost squealed and from then on I spent most of my time for the next year with my face and home assistant and learning to try and figure out what all I could do with the house.
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I can only imagine like it that I, when I started using home, it's an audit discovery, or wasn't a thing, right? [SPEAKER_02]: So I can only, yeah, I, even today when I open up like a brand new instance for, uh, testing a beta or something and it just discovers all the stuff on the house, I'm always amazed about like wow, like, [SPEAKER_02]: the discovery alone.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: I just see ability to click a few buttons and then you go to automation happening. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, flies a few ways. [SPEAKER_00]: Try to keep things local. [SPEAKER_00]: Try to stay keep stuff off of Wi-Fi since I think now I'm halfway through the migration.
[SPEAKER_00]: I still have like 85 Wi-Fi devices. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've got to cut those down and luckily, I don't have to worry much about spouse approval. [SPEAKER_00]: My wife loves it. [SPEAKER_00]: She plays with it some time herself or she'll just come to me and say, hey, I want an automation that does this, can you make that happen and yeah, I dive on the rabbit hole that one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, most of the automation is in the house are prompted by her. [SPEAKER_02]: Does your wife use the home assistant app, herself? [SPEAKER_00]: she's got it on her phone and from time to time we use it but she's not an active user ever but the house is set up mostly through voice control so we don't have to use a phone for much anything but when that fails and inevitably it does then yeah she and I both go to the home assistant app to make things run what is your voice control ecosystem of choice [SPEAKER_00]: I've got three various Amazon dots and two voice assistant PAs and two of the seed.com real link, something real, something speakers.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just started building a bunch of different kits into the I found one that I liked and for the most part of stuck with just the Amazon devices and the home assistant voice fee. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the Amazon devices are a good for just to get like start talking to her and she can do stuff along as you've got.
[SPEAKER_02]: devices on there. [SPEAKER_02]: The voice PA for me is still, I don't know, if it's the audio quality or if it's the smarts behind it, but I find, you know, I'll ask it to turn off the office downlights and it will turn off everything in the office, not just the downlights. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've noticed in the last couple of months, maybe a year now, as a firmware updates have progressed on it, the false alarms have gotten significantly worse for me.
[SPEAKER_02]: Interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: I know that people are complaining about those, the false activations, and I hardly had any of those. [SPEAKER_00]: I was using Jarvis, so it's not like it was easily recognizable, but here recently, it's almost if I had the TV on it all, I can expect four or five interruptions, and I early on put the automation and deposit the TV and everything when I want to use the voice [SPEAKER_00]: So every time it false alerts, it shuts a TV off from plane.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_02]: How have you got the TV connected to the voice PA for that to happen? [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I have the Apple TV integration, uh, talking to the Apple TV and the automation is whenever the voice assistant goes from idle to whatever to state, I forgot the state. [SPEAKER_00]: It is whatever she goes from idle to state of listening may may be listening.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have it paused automatically pause the television. [SPEAKER_00]: So whenever I would activate it on purpose, the TV would pause and then it would switch to the next state and start the TV again. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's one of the features I'd love about the Amazon Echo is once you when you group a sonal speaker with the Amazon Echo in that room, when you talk to the lady in there, it will duck the volume of the sonal speakers down so that it doesn't interrupt you.
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, the thing up to do that with the voice peer would make things a lot better too. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, not the voice peed does duck, but I like the I like the pausing of the TV because that's an external noise source. [SPEAKER_00]: If it activates and you don't say anything, it listens for the next 30 or 45 seconds and tells you it couldn't understand what you wanted because it was listening to TV.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it, uh, it's becoming somewhat irritating when I return the automation off. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But that's a good worker, I know, for, yeah, not kind of an issue, but. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I noticed that early on that it couldn't distinguish multiple sources. [SPEAKER_00]: And that was the first thing I thought of as a, you know, a change, the voice assistant entity changes states every time it goes from listening to responding to idle.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I just, you know, decided to trigger off of those. [SPEAKER_01]: You talked about moving, I wanted to move everything on to Zigbee. [SPEAKER_01]: Tell us a little bit about why Zigbee specifically. [SPEAKER_01]: I know you said you wanted to get off Wi-Fi and multiple reasons to do it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But what about XE-wave, a matter, and a matter is why if I do it, matter with thread, something like that? [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a couple of matter over thread devices and they've been, iffy, at best, they, again, they're well, they're IKEA, so it could be two different problems. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know that it was the first round of their thread. [SPEAKER_00]: capable devices. [SPEAKER_00]: I got the one with the scroll wheel and it will just disappear from time to time. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've not too much on thread yet. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I need to get a better border router.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got the little Akara and two like thumb drive looking thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm what I'm looking to do in switching out my Apple TV to one with the ethernet port in it. [SPEAKER_00]: So it also has the the border router [SPEAKER_00]: and using that mainly I went with Zigbee because Z-Wave is expensive or more expensive.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was the big-decider. [SPEAKER_00]: I researched both protocols and I know that Z-Wave being in 900 megahertz I think is where it is. [SPEAKER_00]: It's got a lot greater distance and it's a lot more stable. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a little bit more expensive. [SPEAKER_00]: There's not quite the team use selection of Z-wave devices like there is no, there is not.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I built the alarm system here off of team use Zigbee door sensors and windows. [SPEAKER_00]: fast cool and a ring key paddle arm. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, did you find that you had to use a whole bunch of custom quirks in, uh, uh, all I should be running is that I chose, uh, to get some of those team redevices in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I'm running some in ZHA, I'm running some in, uh, Zigbee over MQTG. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I've never had to fiddle with a quirk. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know how to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I've heard of them, but never had to run and do them. [SPEAKER_02]: I was surprised like I have, um, still on my desk, it feels like I pull this as a prop out all the time, but these little, uh, nothing that either FP 300 motion sensors, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: I have them in Zigbee mode. [SPEAKER_02]: This one is also in mint condition. [SPEAKER_02]: That should be my, uh, box of shade. [SPEAKER_00]: I've been wanting to get one of those, but I haven't yet justified it. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got everything present, or everything present, slights throughout the house, and I've got in a car FP2 as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I was surprised that a car advice needs a quick visit H.A. [SPEAKER_02]: still. [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it would be such a mainstream device, but yeah, I needed to get a quirk in ZHA to get all the little senses that it has available like the battery and a few other configuration options that are available.
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, it even like the big brands can still require a whole bunch of stuff out. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what makes me nervous when [SPEAKER_02]: Is this going to work out of the box? [SPEAKER_02]: Is it buying like is the door sensor going to be a paperweight because all of a sudden I can't use it But you know if you've been able to do it.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's great. [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't had a problem yet. [SPEAKER_00]: It's fantastic I had a couple of third reality sensors and I just decided I was going to try cheap team You want to see how they did and they've been just as reliable as anything else. [SPEAKER_02]: I've got how do you find the battery life on them?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right and I'm using an analogue for chargeable batteries and all of them. [SPEAKER_00]: So those are good long-term batteries. [SPEAKER_00]: I think every probably four or five months. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing the whole house in batteries in one field swoop. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's not, it's not too bad.
[SPEAKER_00]: I find the coin-cell battery stuff to be far more irritating than stuff that runs off of the boys. [SPEAKER_01]: They typically tend to get depleted faster. [SPEAKER_00]: which I've got a bunch of team UPRIs through the house. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: How do they coin cell batteries?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the only stuff I've got there runs off coin cell batteries is a little cheap PR I motion sensors. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to get rid of those and go everywhere I've got a motion sensor go to a presence sensor. [SPEAKER_00]: That's part of the ongoing project.
[SPEAKER_02]: So those FP300s, they've got points of batteries. [SPEAKER_02]: And my new philosophy is no more coin cell but devices in the house, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like I have too many, as it is. [SPEAKER_00]: I tried going the rechargeable battery route and that was horrible. [SPEAKER_00]: They fail so quickly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when they do work, they dream so quickly. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I have the same. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so now like what do I do like these ones up to their credit the battery life on these things is amazing. [SPEAKER_02]: I think they quote like three years to years without replacing a battery.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not dependent on whether you're running in a matter of a Zigbee mode. [SPEAKER_02]: It does. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think Zigbee is the one that is the better battery life. [SPEAKER_00]: burn syrup pretty quick. [SPEAKER_02]: No, Zigbee should be better than, uh, matter, I believe.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought matter was a lighter weight protocol. [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't applies the battery yet, and if I think they're still in the 90% range, since I've put the other two in two conditions now. [SPEAKER_01]: That's good. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, in terms of Zigbee, have you found any, like you're using both these that Zigbee and MQTT ends at H.A.
[SPEAKER_01]: and have you found any, like, weird inter-op issues and like that. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm running two separate controllers for that which that helps. [SPEAKER_00]: I know you, there's some controllers you can run them at the same time, but I got on two separate controllers and the radios are on extension cables and hung high, so it works pretty good.
[SPEAKER_02]: You've got two controller, so if you've got two controllers, that means you've got two networks. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've got one Zigbee over MQTT network and one ZHA network. [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason that I have on that way is some of the devices expose different entities, depending on whether they're in ZHA or MQTT.
[SPEAKER_00]: So depending on what I'm wanting out of it, is which side you get stuck on. [SPEAKER_01]: So what do you do to investigate that? [SPEAKER_01]: Do you add it to one and then remove it and add it to the other? [SPEAKER_01]: Or do you look it up? [SPEAKER_01]: What's the process look like they're trying?
[SPEAKER_00]: I generally just go from one side to the other. [SPEAKER_00]: I find that to be quicker than actually going through the documentation to find out. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I do that. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll just stick on my one side together and see what exposed what gets exposed and I mean for a lot of them you either get on off on one side and no battery and no other type of reporting is just on off and then [SPEAKER_00]: the other side of it, you'll get far more opportunities exposed and just depends on the device it's been my experience.
[SPEAKER_02]: You were originally complaining about, you know, uh, some of your devices on Wi-Fi are causing issues. [SPEAKER_02]: You're now running devices on Wi-Fi and two ZIP networks that are all potentially in competing bands. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you find any issues needing to have, you know, as you've been at work on this band, as you've been at work on that band and give you Wi-Fi away from both of them?
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't have any issues because that's exactly what I do. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the 2.4 gigahertz that I'm running for Wi-Fi is on channel 1 and 6. [SPEAKER_00]: I believe is what it's between and my Zigbee and NQTT networks are on 20 and 25. [SPEAKER_00]: So there. [SPEAKER_00]: well out of the range of having any type of interference with the 2.4 gigahertz stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just got to the point where I had so many devices that the I was actually using a ubiquity product. [SPEAKER_00]: It was a unify alien router. [SPEAKER_00]: I had two of those and they start to get sluggish around 100 devices. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's when I decided to, you know, I'd go with full unify stuff since each access [SPEAKER_00]: 300 devices.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that pretty crazy now. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, but you can get 400 devices. [SPEAKER_02]: Poor access point. [SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, Bailey Brack is wet. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've got two U7 pros and the Unified 24 port switch and I think it's called the UDB switch. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the one that's got the Wi-Fi 7 bridge built into the switch.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you can just stick it up anywhere, join it to the Wi-Fi network, and then it's an A4POE switch. [SPEAKER_02]: Nice. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Unified is once again one of those companies that could take my money. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm always looking for secondhand, cheap, unified gear.
[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't exist. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: eBay is about the best I've found, and it's still not much of a discount. [SPEAKER_01]: It's... Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And you're probably getting old stuff, like, really old about the die. [SPEAKER_00]: And luckily, the stuff I bought, I've been in the box.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, both of the access points I bought were in the box and so is the Unified Gateway. [SPEAKER_00]: That I'm using. [SPEAKER_00]: The 24 port switch came from doing a software trial with OVIC. [SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the things they give away is do a software trial with us and we'll give you Unified Switch.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sold. [SPEAKER_02]: Now, if you're looking to upgrade your smartphone, you really can't go past Zeus. [SPEAKER_02]: Then, you 800 series is at a long range motion dimmer, the XN12 800 LR combines three home devices into a single wall switch. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a full featured Z-wave dimmer with a built-in motion sensor and ambient light sensor.
[SPEAKER_02]: So your lights can automatically respond when someone enters the room, while also taking the current light level into account. [SPEAKER_02]: That means you can create smart lighting automations without installing separate motion at luck sensors around the room. [SPEAKER_02]: The Zen12 also supports scene control using multi-taps, holes and release actions, giving you plenty of ways to control lights and scenes directly from the switch.
[SPEAKER_02]: And with smart bulb mode, it can also work with smart bulbs like Philips Hue without creating power to them at the wall. [SPEAKER_02]: Zeus are an official or works with Home Assistant Partner, and they've also helped Nabukasa test the Home Assistant Connect ZWA2 by providing ZWAV at long-range devices, so you know their products are designed with Home Assistant users in mind.
[SPEAKER_02]: Zeus products are backed by US-based technical support and an extended 5-year warranty when you register your device within 30 days of purchase. [SPEAKER_02]: For the best prices on all Zeus products head over to the smartesthouse.com [SPEAKER_02]: That's the SmottestHouse.com. [SPEAKER_01]: In terms of automations and those kind of things tray, I mean, what are kind of your coolest or most fun automations that you've got or like what are the most proud of?
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't done anything all that fancy, but one of the things I really do enjoy is turning the corner into my driveway and watching my garage door open. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I really just tickles me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Any other than just turning lights on and off when people are in rooms, the only other thing I've a couple of things I've got going on is I told you about that temperature and pressure sensor that I have outside.
[SPEAKER_00]: that triggers, well, when it gets cold here, will freeze routinely, not a hard freeze, but it will routinely freeze in Florida. [SPEAKER_00]: So instead of me having to worry about my pipes or water or whatever freeze, and I have a light in the pump house, that thing triggers, a smart switch, when the temperature goes down, smart switch turns on, light turns on, temperature comes back up, everything turns off.
[SPEAKER_00]: That way, don't have to wake up to frozen water in any morning, [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting and home Mrs. isn't is controlling that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that to me not legit now. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't live some of it does get freezing But that does seem critical. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you have anything to Monitor that like what if home Mrs. isn't in that in sense fails?
[SPEAKER_02]: Have you like a backup in place? [SPEAKER_02]: No, I like that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no Just hope it doesn't freeze really. [SPEAKER_00]: It generally only wants your twice through the winter season will get to the point where you could bust your pipes here [SPEAKER_00]: so I don't have to worry about that too too much.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just the, you know, sometimes the inconvenience if it's, if it is frozen inside the house, but since, since I've put that up, I haven't really, I checked to make sure that the sensor still reading data. [SPEAKER_00]: I checked that in the winner on a regular basis, but other than that, I don't, I don't mess with it much.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's great. [SPEAKER_01]: Nice. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I didn't realize it gets that cold out where you are, because I figured, [SPEAKER_00]: It's not here about three years ago, the good two inches, that's rare. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm 50 years old and it's happened three times in my lifetime.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But for a sunny Florida, it's unexpected. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was a legend, Florida is almost being tropical, right? [SPEAKER_02]: I, that's what the Crocodiles are. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we have no infrastructure to handle ice on a road. [SPEAKER_00]: We have nothing to clear it, no one knows how to drive in it, no one has chains, no one has no tires, it's 85 degrees, nine months out of the year here, or more.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's interesting that you've kind of prepped for it, for the couple of the times that it does happen, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And, and do you find that it to one of those things that it's like it's a piece of mind, I guess, is it? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, really what it's getting it, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Make sure everybody happy, you know, wife happy, no one that it's in place.
[SPEAKER_00]: Makes me happy. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll for sure. [SPEAKER_02]: If you were to start your home assistant journey again today, what would you do differently? [SPEAKER_00]: I'd probably skip doing anything on Wi-Fi if I could avoid it, just mostly because I know, now I've overloaded in that work and it's not having to get a whole other network and now I'm transitioning off the devices.
[SPEAKER_00]: I could have saved myself a lot of time and money if I just gone with Zigbee to start with. [SPEAKER_00]: And you're by it, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: That's, you know, it's kind of the fun and all of this is learning and, you know, always need to excuse to buy another device, if it's because I bought the wrong one, that's the best idea.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: Have you thought about anything extra that you would want to automate? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I know one of my favorite things is automating the blinds because I hate, you know, having to open and close them twice a day, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Every morning, they just, I don't have to do it anymore because they just open and close.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you thought about, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've done that as I'm assuming, that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: There are Ikea, so yeah, I guess I wouldn't make them sick of me. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think they sell the Ikea ones in Australia at least anymore. [SPEAKER_02]: But I have the on a blind in the laundry, the Ikea smart blind, it's it's Zigbee.
[SPEAKER_02]: The battery on it sucks because I have to it's like a it was before USB C became like the European standard, so it's like a marker USB charger, got to take it out. [SPEAKER_02]: Hmm. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what mine is. [SPEAKER_00]: you have to the batteries about gay big and you have to take it out and charge it yeah uh... i think last my last forever i think i've i've had the blinds for about two years now and i think i'm going to charge them really [SPEAKER_00]: But they only, yeah, they only go up and down once a day.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, mine too. [SPEAKER_02]: And I charge, I have to charge mine every three, six months. [SPEAKER_02]: Homemises will just be like, it was like semi-a reminder like it needs to replace the battery on this. [SPEAKER_02]: And fair enough, right? [SPEAKER_02]: It stopped working. [SPEAKER_02]: So I haven't, not, I've not been a fan of the battery life on that thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: The last time I charged mine was because it was just bothering me. [SPEAKER_00]: They hadn't died yet, so I felt I needed to be done. [SPEAKER_02]: It's not funny how like it I feel the same So all your blinds is like I care then yeah, that's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my wife was actually in Jacksonville where the key of story is about three hours from here.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she ended up running into a guy that was trade buying new ones and sold us all his old ones. [SPEAKER_02]: Nice, that's a win. [SPEAKER_00]: So we got him super cheap. [SPEAKER_00]: and got most of the house done for just a few hundred bucks. [SPEAKER_01]: That's amazing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she had stopped to ask him about the blinds because we were interested in him.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, yo, I'm just buying these to replace my other ones I've got. [SPEAKER_00]: She started talking to him about it. [SPEAKER_00]: We ended up coming home with a household blinds. [SPEAKER_01]: And they all fit in everything. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, they didn't all fit.
[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't fit. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple that have ghetto installations where the blinds are actually on the outside of the window. [SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, we had a couple that didn't fit and we had to modify a few things, but yeah, for the most part, yeah, they fit our windows. [SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a great, fine. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, normal, not smart blinds don't. [SPEAKER_01]: Those are like 60, 70 bucks a pop. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, I think this guy was just thrilled that he found somebody who would take his garbage. [SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, we were thrilled to find somebody had some garbage he could rid of.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, hey, you know, what are the next little bit look like, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Are you planning on doing anything AI front or are you doing it right now? [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a alum a set up on a machine with the RTX 3060 and it and that's what home assistance running off of and I've got a back studio just what a max studio, a couple months ago and I'm doing not home assistant related AI stuff, but other other AI things with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what do you, what do you, from a homeless in the lens, what do you leveraging this for? [SPEAKER_00]: Mostly just because I think it's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: I, it's more entertaining to have an LLM that you can control a persona on behind home assistant than generic ones. [SPEAKER_00]: That's just kind of mostly from my entertainment.
[SPEAKER_02]: What is your final choice? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the last one I had was a, [SPEAKER_00]: a depressed home assistant that begrudgingly did all the things I asked it to do would always comply eventually, but was generally problematic for me, you know, I've had Super Mario, which I think probably everybody's done that at one point in time with him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just yeah, whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it was this podcast where the the guy did agent Smith. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I can't remember that one, but I got a lot of the idea. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe maybe you did not. [SPEAKER_00]: But anyways, the guy did his sold out MD file describing, you know, wanting the the agent Smith.
[SPEAKER_00]: So of course, I came home and tried that too. [SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, silly things like that. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a fun guy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: The stuff I do on the Mac, I use it for work stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: to, for home film assistant stuff, just just offer fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you type your voice stuff into there as well? [SPEAKER_01]: Or, no. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it comes from the voice assistant, into the alarm integration, from the alarm integration, into my other machine, and then back, and using faster Piper and faster Whisper, and Docker containers for the Texas Beach and Speech of Text.
[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, so you know, that's local, that's awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: But then the response time must be very quick. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it is, it's pretty quick. [SPEAKER_00]: He's running a small model for the home assistant side. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think I'm, uh, using twin 3.6, 4 billion to say, you know, so it's not a huge model.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and it's, it's peppy enough. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's smart enough to do what I needed to do. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not asking a whole log, turn lights on and off. [SPEAKER_00]: And, but it's, you know, smart enough to, to recognize what I'm saying. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have much of a problem with doing the wrong thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: sometimes they'll either just do nothing or generally gets it right. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was here to say to you, you're quite a quen three six or more recent model, but have you been like saying, hey, I'm going to go quen three and then as as updates come out, you're starting going on next next next next or what is that I did that for a while.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it. [SPEAKER_00]: basically my tinkering made it where it never worked because I was always tinkering. [SPEAKER_00]: So I got settled on a model and it's working for me so I haven't messed with it on the home assistant side now on the other side of things with the Mac. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm running three or four different models at a time and changing things of daily.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess that's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: That's again, once playing around what is, I mean, still playing around, but you need a little bit of [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, I figured I could use it for work, and that was my justification for buying it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So guess, work, sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I need to set up a, like, a marketplace alert, so I was like, and start running some AI locally. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it does seem like fun things to do, rather have, have, like, frigate run through there and identify things better. [SPEAKER_02]: I would love to, like, really take the voice page to the next level and have, like, a, [SPEAKER_02]: really fast response time on things that would be collage, hate latency, like you tell, the Amazon echoed it to be something and she thinks about it.
[SPEAKER_02]: She thinks about it and then the lights might turn off. [SPEAKER_00]: With the voice PE, it's conversation speed. [SPEAKER_00]: You don't feel like you're waiting too long for a response and it doesn't take too long to get the lights turned on. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's almost instant.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's correct. [SPEAKER_01]: Like with the voice P, do you have your like, one of the things I find that it's when I'm waiting for the lights to like acknowledge, right? [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I was fine. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh, you know, like, it feels like it's taking a lot longer than it actually takes, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Because it's again, when I what I'm not looking at it, it's like, yeah, okay, it's reasonable. [SPEAKER_01]: And then when I am looking at it, it's like, okay, it feels like it's taking longer. [SPEAKER_01]: Do you have those turned off? [SPEAKER_01]: Do you have, are you doing anything [SPEAKER_00]: The only time I really pay much attention to the lights is for air conditions, you know, when it goes ready, when it can't find home assistant, or if it came on the Wi-Fi, generally, you know, when it doesn't work, like it's supposed to, then I'll look to see if there's an air light.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Which, by the way, is a great indicator for, uh, because I used to do the same where my voice PE almost acted as a, obviously it acts as a voice PE, but it's also like an uptime monitor for my home assistant. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And something's not working.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's red, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, [SPEAKER_00]: of got in everything presence one in the in the bedroom and it does the same thing the PIR flashes when it never home assistance not available nice is that default or did you set that up as default as as far as I know I didn't do anything I mean I may have gone through and you know flicking switches just to see what they did and hit it and it's it stayed there but I didn't didn't set it on purpose it's always nice to wake up at night and see that light and go crap I got to fix home assistant [SPEAKER_02]: Is that a regular occurrence, though?
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought you said before that your home business has been pretty stable. [SPEAKER_00]: No, it's pretty stable. [SPEAKER_00]: It's real stable. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: There's been a couple of OS updates that have made it where it didn't reboot. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But I keep good backups.
[SPEAKER_02]: Backups. [SPEAKER_02]: And home business makes that easy now. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Like things that they need backup system. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I keep a copy on the home assistant machine. [SPEAKER_00]: I keep another one on a server and then the Navocados backups.
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's just easy to restore. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: 3D. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm confident enough in them that I don't really pay much attention to release notes or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: And I update as soon as I see the updates available.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the one or two times that's messed up, the backups have just been there and worked. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm a real pretty real confident in them. [SPEAKER_02]: So what's next on the list? [SPEAKER_02]: What's your plans for the rest of the year? [SPEAKER_02]: Have you got anything that you want to get automated?
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the next big project I've want to do is do outdoor cameras. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a floodlight in the camera now that's wise, it's a wise camera. [SPEAKER_00]: I was thinking about the ubiquity AI cameras but getting full house covering around the whole house is gonna be pricey.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thinking probably real, real link. [SPEAKER_00]: And the last couple of rounds of tap-o cameras that have come out have been surprisingly good for the price. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, to be honest, I had the exact same thoughts. [SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to get, like when I got the ubiquity Wi-Fi set up, I was like, all right.
[SPEAKER_02]: I got the gateway that I can put a hard drive into so I can run protect and have 24 seven recordings on there. [SPEAKER_02]: That's it. [SPEAKER_02]: The next logical step we to buy the AI camera is, but they are, so I think I was going to be looking at like five grand just to set up, you know, like the, um, yeah, just, right, almost a thousand delivery.
[SPEAKER_00]: For the AI, I can do all of it locally, so I don't necessarily need so much the AI capabilities in the camera. [SPEAKER_00]: I can get away with lower-end garbage cameras, comparatively speaking, and still get the AI features out of it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I went the railing cameras, because they have the AI locally, and for what I need, they are enough.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: They have the person detection, the vehicle detection, and nothing there that homebicisent can then receive those alerts, and then I can take action on the recordings. [SPEAKER_00]: And the plan is to put that ubiquity switch with the Wi-Fi gateway in it in the attic.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how that's going to survive from a heat standpoint, because my attic on an 85 degrees day will be 100 and something degrees in the attic, so we'll see how that goes. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm willing to lose it in the process, but the idea would be to put that up there and then run POE out of it to cameras around the exterior of the house.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's a good idea, actually. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if you have a garage that's a good place for it too. [SPEAKER_01]: If you have a covered garage, then you can just run your cables back into the garage and that kind of thing. [SPEAKER_01]: It's one hole and everything kind of goes out there, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's pretty easy to run cabling in my house. [SPEAKER_00]: The attic runs to complete length of the house. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's good. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's not bad. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just go walk over to wherever room I wanted to be with and draw a hole in the wall.
[SPEAKER_02]: But you then look at doing any automations with those cameras once you've got the map. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but there's not a whole lot. [SPEAKER_00]: I can do the area that I live in. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm way outside of Tallahassee. [SPEAKER_00]: So I live in a more rural area. [SPEAKER_00]: And hardly anybody comes by.
[SPEAKER_00]: The shafts absolutely no real security reasons for me to have the cameras. [SPEAKER_00]: I just want them. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I've got the the inside of the house is done and now it's time to do the outside. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So do you have camera you say you say you do have cameras inside of them?
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they were mostly just for watching pets and stuff up until recently we had four cats in a dog. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh wow. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, doing a lot of watching other animals and stuff when we were going to be gone first and appearance of time.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And what are you using for those like are the other local I assume capo C230s little PTG Gamers. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, do you do anything in terms of privacy around those? [SPEAKER_00]: I know like my family's very hesitant to have cameras in the house The recordings only done locally, so I'm not overly concerned about it and I've got firewall rules set up to you know, so I don't have to worry about people It you know coming in and watching the cameras [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not too concerned and honestly speaking if you're watching me, it's your therapy bill not mine You say yeah I'm saying between the two of us the watchers gonna come out far worse off than I am
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't think we, I, yeah, even just, I think we had a guest in very early days of the podcast that had cameras in the house and they had the cameras turn around when Turn it, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I could not, I'd like to see cameras now that do that, that are, that are built.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they, some of them have the privacy mode and like with these, you can set up preset positions for them. [SPEAKER_00]: And so one preset position is just with it turned all the way around. [SPEAKER_00]: And then I have it where I can say go into privacy motor and click the button. [SPEAKER_00]: And that automation kicks in and all the cameras turn to the wall.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that is what I think if I was to have cameras in the house, that would be the only way to do it. [SPEAKER_02]: But then I don't like the look of cameras in the corner of our room or something. [SPEAKER_02]: Like it just looks like then you're in a corporate environment. [SPEAKER_01]: For me, that's what it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: In a home, I'm like, I know it's my home. [SPEAKER_01]: I know it's my camera system. [SPEAKER_01]: It's my whatever, but it's like Something is watching, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like it's yeah, I could see where that would be just concerning for people, but it just doesn't really bother me [SPEAKER_01]: 100% and if it doesn't, you have, you should do it right now.
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, like you said, safely, you fired all the off. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a threat. [SPEAKER_00]: My wife did make me turn off the tracking in the bedroom. [SPEAKER_00]: She did creep her out when she'd walk through the bedroom in the camera would follow her around. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So I turned that off. [SPEAKER_02]: I do like the the thought of using the camera though for presents, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like because the AI on the cameras then could set, I guess there's actually a person in this room, turn the lights on or turn them off when there's no person in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I could do that if I had better cameras, but honestly the person detection and the pet detection in a $35 camera is exactly what you'd expect it to be. [SPEAKER_01]: But that's where tools like frigate and stuff come in, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I've been, I've been meaning to set that up.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've started it a couple of times and wasn't really focused on it when I went into it and it became frustrating. [SPEAKER_00]: So I haven't gone back and looked at it yet. [SPEAKER_00]: But when I do the cameras for the outside of the house, I'll get frigate set up as well. [SPEAKER_02]: Run, get a limb through that too.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll see how theirs does versus mine. [SPEAKER_00]: I have a funny feeling there's being trained specifically for detection types in mind being generic. [SPEAKER_00]: There's probably be better. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I definitely see what I could do with my own.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've heard the frigate, it's like plus or whatever they're like subscription. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they're coming with that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like apparently all this model is pretty good from what I've just heard. [SPEAKER_01]: People in random channels talk about the norm the free ones like it's okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like it'll it'll still like somebody was I saw on a channel. [SPEAKER_01]: Somebody posted a picture of like their wife and it was identified them as like a dog or a cat or something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, you know, obviously, their wife took a little bit of a fence, I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, you always hear about this kind of stuff, but apparently when you do their subscription one, it's like almost always like pretty bang on. [SPEAKER_00]: No, again, I haven't tried it myself, but I think they have where you can do post training, your own cell phone on their models.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: Once you do that, if you can run it locally or not, [SPEAKER_00]: If not, I think I remember the advertising that you can do your own post-training on it. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you want facial recognition for your family, something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: Which could get useful, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you can even take your doorbell camera and start to say, it's like, okay, you know, this is tray and, oh, I see tray, okay, open up the, unlock the door. [SPEAKER_01]: For example, whatever, right, doing those kind of things. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're, if you're comfortable enough trusting something like that, right, in terms of a, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that would be something.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think it'd be more concerned about not being able to get in than for somebody else being able to get in. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I mean though, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, that trust goes both ways, right? [SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, maybe a doppelganger or maybe it's, uh, maybe it's just, uh, like, you're there and it's like, oh, this is actually filled and it's like, oh, no, it's true.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let me, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And it's, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't gone much down the route of the door locks. [SPEAKER_00]: I have one on the back door. [SPEAKER_00]: It was an August lock that it was my wife is from Texas and they have this auction house there that does a lot of Amazon return stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what this was, was somebody returned the lock and we got it for like 15 bucks and I put that on. [SPEAKER_00]: the the other two doors, the who, whatever the genius was, it's specced out the house, did not put a deadbolt on the door, that's the front door to the outside world.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there's a deadbolt on my door to my garage, but not to the one that actually can let people in and out of my house. [SPEAKER_00]: Nice. [UNKNOWN]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: So I've got to, I've got to have to put a deadbolt, [SPEAKER_00]: you know, take care of cutting the hole for the strike pleading.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I had the same issue when I when I bought this house and it was the first thing I changed. [SPEAKER_02]: That's it. [SPEAKER_02]: We are getting a smart look. [SPEAKER_02]: That is my the ultimate like the thing for me is to have a smart look and get rid of the case of the house.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then it was it's just so much easier. [SPEAKER_02]: And it is it is worth it. [SPEAKER_02]: Particularly once you can get one that's integrated into home assistant. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I could see it being a lot more beneficial for me, but my garage door is effectively my access, you know, electronic door opener.
[SPEAKER_00]: And see, yeah, that that only opens for my wife's phone and mine. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, I'm assuming nobody's holding this hostage and helping using our phones to get into our house. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's that pretty much does the job for me. [SPEAKER_01]: I wish you find you have bigger problems.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when we, when we took possession of this house, uh, the previous owner, he gave me this stack of keys. [SPEAKER_01]: And it, because every key, like none of the locks have been recieved, so it's like every key is every lock is different.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, got a front, I've got a side door, I've got a back door and there's a door in the garage and it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: And even the front door, it's a double door, so I've got two, one of them's a dead, like it's nothing, but I got the key for it, and it's like, this is very, and it's like, it's just, you feel like a janitor, like a prison guard almost where you're carrying like, and then it's like, I gotta, I gotta rekey it or just change the locks that I'm just going to change them.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's on my head to do probably tomorrow morning first thing, and just, yeah, let's start. [SPEAKER_01]: at least getting that consistent, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So, enter what fills that, like, make it so I don't have to carry the keys. [SPEAKER_00]: One thing I did just remember is I do have Z-Wave in the house.
[SPEAKER_00]: I completely forgot in about it. [SPEAKER_02]: I had to get a Z-Wave antenna to use the alarm keypad because it's, oh yeah, one of the, alarm.com, I think they have, uh, uh, our ATT and the two rings. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a ring, ring one. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a ring version 2. [SPEAKER_00]: Keep that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I had to put Z-wave in house for that. [SPEAKER_02]: So it traces that then have your ring panel coming as an alarm panel into high assistant as well. [SPEAKER_00]: It does see it as an alarm panel, but you have to run a blueprint against it to get the actual keys to work and the [SPEAKER_00]: fire and police and arm and disarm buttons to work.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a, I had to do a blueprint. [SPEAKER_00]: I, I used somebody else's blueprint for it. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't create it. [SPEAKER_02]: That's cool that you can have an ability to coal, you know, like, fire grade and police from that alarm panel. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you can set up actions for those buttons and you can have a, you know, you can have a call out if you, if you, I don't have a landline, so it's a little bit more difficult for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm sure you can do like a, even there is something like that, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's stuff to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I actually have a converter for ethernet to copper or I can do it that way and dial out nice. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, try it. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much for joining us today.
