[SPEAKER_01]: Shay, I have this marble tray to the left of my kitchen sink. [SPEAKER_01]: It has my glass bottles as a craft of the concentrate. [SPEAKER_01]: That's how I use the craft because it looks so pretty and sexy sitting right there. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love them. [SPEAKER_01]: They are a way that I like experience enjoyment and taking care of the home.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a very data bed, we don't think about beding being something that dates a home, but it actually really, really gets.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if it's screaming, it's 2007. [SPEAKER_01]: I just spotted help. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, American Blossomlinins.com forward slash or uh, with the code top 20 is where you can go to uh, to shop those non-dated. [SPEAKER_01]: very beautiful classic linens I'm let's right yes okay top 10 decorating tips that quietly date your home so the thing with our homes is sometimes we have habits or choices in our decorating that we've carried along for years and those can [SPEAKER_01]: make a space feel older or outdated, more outdated than it really is.

[SPEAKER_01]: Some of us moved into homes and they need, we bought them with this idea of remodeling the whole thing. [SPEAKER_01]: When we bought this home, it was a legit 1984 time capsule. [SPEAKER_01]: every jacepanywara, the matching fabric to the jacepanywara paper on the shower curtain. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was per-faction, so some of us are, we've inherited a space, so we've come into a space that's really outdated and we're looking at it going like, we're going to do.

[SPEAKER_01]: But there's good news. [SPEAKER_01]: There are affordable fixes. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you, maybe you love your home, but the kitchen is just really outdated. [SPEAKER_01]: But you know what? [SPEAKER_01]: There's, [SPEAKER_01]: You maybe you have the extra 85K sitting around to do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you don't.

[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to try to look at it from all angles today and just have a little fun. [SPEAKER_01]: And the first thing I want to start with is a matchy, matchy over stuffed furniture sets. [SPEAKER_00]: The over stuffed was definitely a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That was that was a style really rounded corners or mischairs that you had to have like a make mansion for them to actually look like they scale up the perfect and all the pillows used to match so there was typically like two or three styles of fabric that matched so the pillows one of them was some sort of rough burlap.

[SPEAKER_01]: the other one was some sort of tapestry with like a fringe and exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, if you have the budget, obviously, you find something that's much more timeless. [SPEAKER_00]: We don't necessarily think about furniture to me is being something that is dated or that can be dated.

[SPEAKER_01]: but the matching furniture sets, here's the thing, and I think, so each week Shay and I, we talk about what we do kind of on the side, outside of the podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: And if you're in the world of Preation Farm Girl, you've seen this thing called the Old World Design Society, and that's where we talk a lot about this kind of stuff.

[SPEAKER_01]: And we've talked about this before that if your living room is giving like, hey, I went to the showroom and I picked that. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that is outdated. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay, okay, you know, that just everything, the two end chairs match the sofa match the foot stool. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the coffee table has the same legs as the sofa, you know, if it's, yeah, got that matchy matchy.

[SPEAKER_00]: So if I was just starting out again because like when we were starting out our homes, we would go to thrift stores. [SPEAKER_00]: We would find furniture there. [SPEAKER_00]: And if somebody who can afford to get a whole new furniture set takes their good one to goodwill, and you find this right, you find the oversaw furniture set, I'm picturing like the right collection of tasteful pillows and potentially a slip cover to kind of just break up patterns and different textures.

[SPEAKER_00]: What are your thoughts? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, what are we doing? [SPEAKER_00]: How do we fix that? [SPEAKER_01]: If we're thrift storing it? [SPEAKER_01]: Sure. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so if we have money, we get a new set. [SPEAKER_00]: We get something that maybe fits the times a bit better.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bit more unique, okay? [SPEAKER_01]: And I think, still avoiding the showroom, though, maybe buying individual shows that fit together. [SPEAKER_01]: Sure, but we're not going to Ashley furniture, I don't know if there's a national chain or something. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the big, the full set, the living room set.

[SPEAKER_01]: If we're thrift storing it and we're walking in to that full set, now at the thrift store, that's right. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Then I'm getting maybe the chairs. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: And a different sofa. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm throwing out the pillows that it all came with.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm starting fresh with pillows and tying using the pillows maybe to tie those three pieces now together. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. [SPEAKER_00]: To make total sense. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: You also on that?

[SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: That's good. [SPEAKER_00]: It's funny because I didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think about this stuff too much like you do, but I do know what I like and I wouldn't have been able to put that over stuff to match you for an intro thing, but I just know. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, when you see it, you know, when you see it, I mean, yeah, look, if you, if you are in a position where you're, you need to get the furniture, uh, that's right in Costco when you walk in, you know, the big sectional or whatever.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think a way to make that cozy is to add four or five or six beautiful pillows, like saying working in that budget. [SPEAKER_01]: So, pillows can get really, really expensive. [SPEAKER_01]: So, obviously, you've got four hundred dollar options on cherish and you've [SPEAKER_01]: options at TGMAX right adding 4 to 6 pillows that have a little bit more interest than your average sofa can a few beautiful wool blankets draped over it, instant, instant cozy, instant different look you know yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want to talk about number two because this one is always stood out for me, for those of us who actually grew up in the 80s and 90s, this is one of those things that actually makes me actually quite uncomfortable thinking about it, which is, I don't know why, a heavy drapes and swags. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember the pictures that were really popular in the 80s when you would go to like pennies and get your picture taken and [SPEAKER_00]: There would be a picture of you looking straight on completely black background, and then there would be like a half faded profile one behind it Of you the layer.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it looks like you have two, though. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what I'm talking about? [SPEAKER_00]: Like an SNL skit or do you guys know what I'm talking about? [SPEAKER_00]: Totally do portrait picture of you black background, and then like a half faded [SPEAKER_00]: What does this have to do?

[SPEAKER_00]: Profile. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what drapes make me feel like. [SPEAKER_00]: That's how dated, that's what they make me feel like they make me feel very uncomfortable. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why, but like all windows, just window treatments, old 90s window treatments. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if something happened to me when I was child.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, did I get stuck in the drapes? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, in the drapes used to be [SPEAKER_00]: Evvy. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they could rape her. [SPEAKER_00]: On them, they could stand up by themselves and it was a thick every window And like the thing above the swag above and like then there was this whole thing in the 90s Where we did swags and like silk flowers wrapped around the top of the thing and then the heavier There was just a lot of window treatments going on in the 90s a lot [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm really happy that that's not the case.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, you have the budget. [SPEAKER_01]: curtains can get expensive. [SPEAKER_01]: They're really beautiful when they do. [SPEAKER_01]: I found they must know me. [SPEAKER_01]: I found they found me on Instagram like a custom drapery ad keeps finding its way into my Instagram feed and they're beautiful.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you can measure your windows and get some beautiful modern up-to-date and I just feel like everything today looks more timeless. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like when we're looking at drapes today, you could insert them into any decade, really, in the last hundred years, and they'd kind of look okay.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Where as, like, those chasing penny catalog drapes? [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: They are not timeless. [SPEAKER_01]: They have a very distinct era. [SPEAKER_01]: Look to them. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you can, custom drapes are the way to go. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're on a budget, I would start by removing God awful valence.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: The valence at the top just rip it off. [SPEAKER_01]: Get rid of it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's whether it's a flag or that. [SPEAKER_01]: padded thing, what is that? [SPEAKER_01]: What are we doing? [SPEAKER_00]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not, I'm uncomfortable. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're going to, if like, I sometimes I like the padded thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: Take it off, staple gun some new fabric to it, then get rid of the drapes. [SPEAKER_00]: I can't. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm put a lighter drape. [SPEAKER_01]: I like this. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I do like a balance. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I pay a lot of them. [SPEAKER_01]: I buy old, old ones at the Parisley markets.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but start by making a decision. [SPEAKER_01]: Am I going to get rid of the drapes? [SPEAKER_01]: Am I going to get rid of the [SPEAKER_01]: So, I guess, got to go over all this wig has to go. [SPEAKER_00]: I, okay, we talked a little bit last week or the week before, I don't remember.

[SPEAKER_00]: We talked a little bit about our design taste being slightly different. [SPEAKER_00]: You have a slightly more feminine bend to yours. [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I have a slightly more masculine bend to mine. [SPEAKER_00]: for lack of, for lack of better words. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, of describing those, but to me, like sometimes when I think about the 90s, heavy, drapery, valance, padded situation, we had going on, I just think, those poor guys who lived in that house.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like their wives are, they're just full, [SPEAKER_00]: What are we doing? [SPEAKER_00]: Like Anne Gettie? [SPEAKER_00]: You remember Anne Getties? [SPEAKER_00]: It looks like she designed these windows for a little She the baby? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's where it was like she would dress babies up in like Peep-ods as Peep-ods.

[SPEAKER_00]: You guys go Google and Getties. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it was G-E-D-E-S. [SPEAKER_00]: We used to have Anne Getties books around our house, but it's like, yeah, it looks like something like [SPEAKER_00]: It looks like props from like a midsummer night stream play at the Shakespearean theater You know, it's just like 12 So flowers and all this kind of stuff everywhere, but um, I Think what makes it more timeless is having it be more Neutral in the scent and like in terms of its energy does that make any sense?

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I feel like, what was with those? [SPEAKER_01]: They just didn't want sunlight, like... [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to keep them like, oh, I want the window, you know, unless it's a huge window, I have a huge windows like you do, then I can take up a little more space with the fabric.

[SPEAKER_01]: Sort of soften the modern architecture aspect of it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Those. [SPEAKER_00]: Those. [SPEAKER_00]: They're just for some really heavy. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I even find sometimes that just even normal curtains, they feel [SPEAKER_00]: drapey they feel too feminine for me so like in our big windows picture windows in the living room this year I took all the drapes down all the curtain rods.

[SPEAKER_00]: I just had had it was way too much fabric blocking out the light Spiders building their webs in it just all kinds of things and instead I replaced them with these very simple and very inexpensive [SPEAKER_00]: Bamboo Roman shades that I got off Amazon and they just screw into the window frame at the bottom so there's nothing over the top of the window and you just their dark brown beautiful color they shield out the light, but you can still see through them.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you can just pull them down. [SPEAKER_00]: They're a beautiful texture. [SPEAKER_00]: And then you just push them up. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's no strings. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no pulleys. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no nothing. [SPEAKER_00]: And I love them. [SPEAKER_00]: They have the right energy to me.

[SPEAKER_00]: OK. [SPEAKER_01]: OK. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's options. [SPEAKER_01]: OK. [SPEAKER_01]: This is maybe not dating, but cheapening. [SPEAKER_01]: And look at, OK, no offense. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think the big metal grommets really cheap in the look. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're running the big rings, there's those huge rings.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: Just for what it's worth. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: If you have those though, I've done this before where I flip it over and then just get the clips, get some cool clips on on rings instead, like when wooden ones that you can get at least $10 or whatever.

[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_00]: And it looks nicer. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it does look a little bit more, more timeless, more timeless. [SPEAKER_01]: There's about the grommets that says hotel room to me. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I could see that.

[SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: This was, um, I want you guys to just go Google. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just have fun with it. [SPEAKER_00]: 90s Tuscan kitchens. [SPEAKER_01]: this thing happened in the 90s and you and I think we're talking about this maybe privately yeah um you know as far as like me talking about French design and French interiors it's got it such a distinct look yes there's different eras but you can kind of like motion all together and everybody kind of still knows that's French right where with Italian not so much doesn't have as much of a distinct look it's more sparse it's more [SPEAKER_01]: simple.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's more utilitarian. [SPEAKER_01]: It's more utilitarian and it's more time. [SPEAKER_01]: Our American aesthetic, like we want stuff, you know, bigger better faster. [SPEAKER_01]: And so there's not that much to work with. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, the 90s decided they would do Tuscan, bigger, better faster.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no Tuscan kitchens that look like that. [SPEAKER_00]: and most of their Americans live in dusk any. [SPEAKER_01]: So what they did was we we air quotes came up with like these big kitchens with corables and huge cabinetry and brown granite town or countertops and [SPEAKER_01]: Brewsters.

[SPEAKER_01]: There was like a lot of roasters involved. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of people are not in their day they were beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: Massive status symbol. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Massive status symbol. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, family with one hers is very well done, but nonetheless.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not asked. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe trendy or really warm. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking at pictures of this right now to remind myself. [SPEAKER_01]: But big. [SPEAKER_01]: Big and chunky. [SPEAKER_01]: Big and chunky. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, chunky, chunky. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: If you have one, like, and if you can, maybe you love it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you love it. [SPEAKER_01]: If you hate it and you can do the big remodel, kitchens are expensive. [SPEAKER_01]: Start to finish. [SPEAKER_01]: Go for it. [SPEAKER_01]: Do a lot of research. [SPEAKER_01]: See if you can find, uh, develop your, you know, sort of taste so that you get what you really want because you're probably going to have it for another 30 years.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yep. [SPEAKER_01]: If you don't have the budget, um, [SPEAKER_01]: going to have to get creative. [SPEAKER_01]: So, there are some really great things about it. [SPEAKER_01]: You probably have a really great floor. [SPEAKER_01]: You probably have some sort of a faux terracotta, a tile floor that you can really work with.

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe the big chunky monkey corbels can come down. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I always thought it was corbells. [SPEAKER_00]: Is it corbels? [SPEAKER_00]: I've been saying that wrong my whole life. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, [SPEAKER_00]: it's a good bit. [SPEAKER_00]: Kitchens to me are it is the fastest way to date a house.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think the question needs to be stenciled. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh we had the ivy stenciled come on. [SPEAKER_01]: So super 90 my mom was in. [SPEAKER_01]: We loved the ivy. [SPEAKER_01]: Ania and the geese. [SPEAKER_00]: We loved geese. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why. [SPEAKER_00]: the wallpaper.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, my mom and then my mom went to like spray painting Ivy with gold and she would wrap it around the Christmas tree. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was just like Ivy everywhere. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, less that. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't not sure. [SPEAKER_00]: But listen, this was before Pinterest, so that's what's funny is like, how did these trends make it around?

[SPEAKER_00]: How did they, trading spaces? [SPEAKER_00]: I think, once in a while. [SPEAKER_00]: Trading spaces? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we did, we watched some trading spaces. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know, I just remember, if you walked into somebody's house with this like Tuscan thing, they were rich.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, for sure. [SPEAKER_00]: They were rich. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I would say to this. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't really care what your kitchen looks like. [SPEAKER_00]: I do care that it reflects what you like. [SPEAKER_00]: I do get sad when people move into homes and we've talked about how your home should be reflective of, you can't make your home something that it's not, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: It'll look just awkward and out of place. [SPEAKER_00]: You got to work with the home that you have, but you can take it a lot of different directions. [SPEAKER_00]: And so if you moved into a home and it's got a fabulous 1950s kitchen, like, how can you take that and make it colors that you like with textures that you like, with pieces that you like, are there pieces that you can take down to just soften it a little bit but where it still fills age appropriate to the house.

[SPEAKER_00]: And these kinds of things. [SPEAKER_00]: Those are the much bigger questions than um what colors do I choose? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it depends on what what do you like? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what do you like? [SPEAKER_01]: You know, now that I think about it, maybe that's why while my aunt definitely has like a 90s touch skin kitchen, I do think it's pretty, it's not terrible and maybe it's because it does really reflect what they like like we did the ceiling like Venetian plaster on it inside and the ceiling, it's beautiful.

[SPEAKER_01]: and she's got her, she loves cardinal dishes, like her, so she's got like a China set, like it's very much her, yeah, and great, your favorite, do that, all of oils from Napa are sitting out, and stuff, so maybe that's why it doesn't have that full blown. [SPEAKER_00]: 90s outdated feeling because it's definitely because they're not copying it's reflecting you know and and the reality is most people probably didn't want to us and us 90s Tuscan kitch.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know where the Tuscan eat come from is the colors like what about this is anything about Tuscan eat. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a, ah, that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: That's a work for another thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, number four. [SPEAKER_01]: I love this. [SPEAKER_01]: The boob light, boob light, spilder gray. [SPEAKER_01]: It's fixtures, cheap sconces, brush nickel. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think that out loud. [SPEAKER_01]: Boob lights. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it's, yeah, it's the, it's the reality of what all of us move into.

[SPEAKER_00]: because these are builder grade lights. [SPEAKER_00]: They go to lows, they find the $35 or boob liey, and they put it up. [SPEAKER_00]: It is a lifetime pursuit to collect beautiful lighting. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, your style might not be my style. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I love little shandies.

[SPEAKER_00]: I call them little shandies. [SPEAKER_00]: They're not posh, shandaliers. [SPEAKER_00]: They're little crusty shandaliers. [SPEAKER_00]: And typically, they're old brass chandeliers. [SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes metal, I have a few metal ones from Italy that I just love with these little flowers on them.

[SPEAKER_00]: If I move, I am stripping them all off and taking them with me and putting up boot lights. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because those of you with a lighting collection don't let any realtor tell you you have to leave them with the house. [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody's gonna appreciate them like you do. [SPEAKER_01]: Because they should be personal.

[SPEAKER_01]: And swap them all out. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is genuinely is an opportunity to have a collection of something that delights you when you think about how much you use a light it's pretty often right pretty often and it's so often overlooked right think about the colors we paint our walls we think about our furniture [SPEAKER_00]: We don't think about something like lights always.

[SPEAKER_01]: We just go get what we can get a lot of times. [SPEAKER_01]: And they do cheap in the look. [SPEAKER_01]: The builder grade, it does really cheap in it. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you've got the budget, then I'm saying, you know, find some really great designer lights. [SPEAKER_01]: Even if it's like as basic as like the restoration hardware catalog, right there, if you don't have the budget, then think about swapping out the, [SPEAKER_01]: the, um, like the globes, like the glat, you know, like, and you're like, what do you have to have frosted?

[SPEAKER_01]: Can we have a little bit more creative? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Some of you are going to be really creative and you're going to take some rub and buff to that. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she's going to say spray paint and new shades. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: Can do a lot. [SPEAKER_00]: Excuse me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Spray paint and new shades can do a lot. [SPEAKER_00]: Spray paint can do a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: But you got to take it down. [SPEAKER_01]: So not everybody can take it down. [SPEAKER_00]: True that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's got, you know, not everybody's husband wants to.

[SPEAKER_00]: Mess with, I have to butter up for days before I bank on an electrical thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know, I'm like making the steak for dinner. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm rubbing the shoulders. [SPEAKER_00]: And then my day three, I'm like, can you take the shantel here down so I can clean it? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, that's so funny.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's true. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you take the next one. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, live laugh love, fresh eggs daily, beach, word art, everywhere, it has to go with fresh eggs daily, why do we like to defend it so many? [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I'm just trying to help. [SPEAKER_01]: I have experience being in a home weekly that honest to God must have had 75 signs on the first floor alone.

[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I was exaggerating. [SPEAKER_01]: Just in case someone knows her, I will not say her name, but my kids still reference this style of design by using her name. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's just a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I don't know what else to say. [SPEAKER_00]: That is totally mine.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone from Hobby Lobby is listening. [SPEAKER_00]: We're sorry. [SPEAKER_00]: That's half of your business. [SPEAKER_00]: We're so sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: That's sorry to Hobby Lobby. [SPEAKER_01]: I think if you're, but no really, if you're looking at your house going, okay, I love this, but is it dating?

[SPEAKER_01]: Lots of people have, they are a little bit more pragmatic, like, okay, I love XYZ. [SPEAKER_01]: Is it time for, it's like your wardrobe? [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I love this blouse, but thank you for your service. [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for your service, that's what I like to say. [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for your service.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you love us saying, yeah, maybe have your child write it in precious handwriting, that's actually going to [SPEAKER_01]: You know, if there are, that's a great idea. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if there's, I'm not saying there's no place for words. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, for example, I just redid our hallway right here outside my office door.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a stairway that takes a jog. [SPEAKER_01]: And on either side, it's just loaded now with family photographs. [SPEAKER_01]: Tons of them. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe about, I think the kids counted like 72. [SPEAKER_01]: I would like to have a sign that says, it's got a don't have a name. [SPEAKER_00]: What?

[SPEAKER_01]: No, this is going to be long here. [SPEAKER_01]: You be long here. [SPEAKER_01]: In other words, this home will always be a safe place for you, whether you've gone and you need to come back. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You belong here. [SPEAKER_01]: You are a member of the family, like multiple meanings in the words you belong here.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But like, I can't get it from Hobby Lobby. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I have to find a creative way to put this little piece of wording in amongst our photographs. [SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's more meaningful ways than a made in China sign to say because words are very important and they are lovely to read as you're passing through a room as you're going throughout your day.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I think there's a more meaningful way to do it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's got, you probably don't have fresh eggs daily in your living room, so. [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't, uh, let's take a quick break between the next batch of things and, uh, you tell people where they can find more Parisian farm girl aesthetic.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so online, I have been Parisian farm girl for the last 20 years. [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to invite you beyond the podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: And for the ultimate experience, I invite you to join me in Paris.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I'm leaving in just about two weeks or my next trip, but I do have half of my spaces available still for April 2026 and I would love to have you join me there. [SPEAKER_01]: Not just vacations. [SPEAKER_01]: This is really a time for your soul to sort of regroup. [SPEAKER_01]: and make new friends most importantly, you're going to come away with some really beautiful relationships formed.

[SPEAKER_01]: All of this you can find at Parisianfarmgrill.com. [SPEAKER_01]: The shop, the YouTube channel, the sub-stack. [SPEAKER_01]: Parisianfarmgrill.com is sort of your portal into French inspired living and I'd love to meet you there. [SPEAKER_00]: So just like our designs are a little bit different, Angela and I do so much similar things with our businesses, but they are different, you know?

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think people take different things away from you than they take away from me. [SPEAKER_00]: And so you can find what we do at the ElliottHomeset.com. [SPEAKER_00]: So... [SPEAKER_00]: We talked last week about a good entry point, our YouTube channel where we release videos every Friday is a great place for you to come and to see, to have a visual representation of so much of what we talk about here on the podcast, Stewart and I make those videos also our substack, which is shade.substack.com is where you can stay connected with weekly recipes, [SPEAKER_00]: What else?

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the store. [SPEAKER_00]: We have a store in online store limone. [SPEAKER_00]: We have twice a year getaways to Italy where we eat and it's a complete turn key vacations so I keep telling people you show up and we're going to take care of everything you're not going to have to guess about where to eat or what to eat or [SPEAKER_00]: how to spend your time or what to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: All of the details for that are below the show, but whether you connect with us on our newsletter or on our Italy trips or on our online store in our cooking community, it's going to be delicious either way. [SPEAKER_00]: Wherever you land is going to be delicious. [SPEAKER_00]: I can assure that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Delicious. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything she does is delicious. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, number six, I'm guilty of this. [SPEAKER_00]: When I get overwhelmed and and you're trying to neutralize the ugly. [SPEAKER_00]: The first thing I did in our first rental house was wall to wall brown. [SPEAKER_00]: Bage was called bread basket.

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember the name of it. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_00]: Just solid brown. [SPEAKER_00]: The first thing I did when I get into this house. [SPEAKER_00]: I think. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wind surface winds are beige. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my 20's. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep. [SPEAKER_00]: I did the same thing in this house, Revere Pewter.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Revere Pewter, this entire house. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep, yep, yep. [SPEAKER_00]: A little flat. [SPEAKER_00]: It helps to neutralize the ugly. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's why people use it. [SPEAKER_00]: I have my encouragement would be just don't stop there because colors are, paint is a big deal.

[SPEAKER_00]: I used to think painting was not a big deal, but it's harder now. [SPEAKER_00]: their ceilings and chandelier medallions and trim and children. [SPEAKER_00]: But paint is something that you can really change for really inexpensive and you can go and do a super high quality paint job and stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can also just slap it as your way together and make it something that's more beautiful for a moment and that's fine too. [SPEAKER_01]: The best way for you to pick a paint color [SPEAKER_01]: Well, here's what I like if I'm doing a room, I will start with an anchor piece and that's usually a rug or the fabric I'm going to use for the curtains or something so a few top 10s ago few steps ago we just talked about like if you have to go to Costco and get a big sectional how to then pick the pillows for that sectional.

[SPEAKER_01]: So now you have this pillow and maybe it's a tapestry, maybe it's a twall, maybe it's a plaid and you've got four or five of them or whatever from TJ Maxx. [SPEAKER_01]: Now get out your paint deck and find the color inside that pillow that you love the most. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what you paint the walls.

[SPEAKER_01]: So you've got a nice utilitarian sofa. [SPEAKER_01]: That was affordable. [SPEAKER_01]: You've got some beautiful pillows and now your wall says, I care. [SPEAKER_01]: See how my wall patch just matches my pillows and it gives a backdrop for that basic sofa to rest against when you have the basic sofa greets against the basic greets wall like there's no interest and they're you're not creating like a stage for anything that you all and that's what paint really does it makes a backdrop to highlight your things [SPEAKER_00]: I don't like accent laws.

[SPEAKER_00]: No, do the accent walls to me are really dated. [SPEAKER_00]: That is dated. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I was seeing about what paint trends now listen, paint trends of the 90s. [SPEAKER_00]: We're not just accent walls, but also like my grandpa moved into a house and they had a splatter paint interior.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember a splatter paint? [SPEAKER_00]: Like Jackson Pollock? [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, do you remember that? [SPEAKER_00]: It was like an early 90s thing. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, get a purple, everything's white and then you take like purple, blue, lime green and you splatter the walls.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, dated, big time dated. [SPEAKER_00]: But the accent wall was a big thing for a long time. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna blame trading spaces for that one. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I do, because I think a lot of like, oh, makers were like, I could do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_01]: We should probably do like this is number six. [SPEAKER_01]: We should do like six and be because I get asked this question all the time. [SPEAKER_01]: Pop. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, just cover those up. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because like my husband is this is his occupation removing it.

[SPEAKER_01]: is horrible. [SPEAKER_01]: You can do it. [SPEAKER_01]: But you have to get it wet and you have to scrape and then you have to repair the wall when you're done. [SPEAKER_01]: So you probably don't want to. [SPEAKER_01]: I think the best way is just like some boards. [SPEAKER_00]: We did like it just from the lows.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was like pine, tongue and groove. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Four inch slats. [SPEAKER_00]: Not a very fun project to do. [SPEAKER_00]: Anything upside down is not fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Not fun. [SPEAKER_00]: Fine. [SPEAKER_00]: Easy fix. [SPEAKER_00]: easy fix.

[SPEAKER_00]: And just more time, let's look, I am not good at these things. [SPEAKER_00]: If you guys are listening in your truck, I am not good at them. [SPEAKER_00]: That's why I had to choose a more timeless design style. [SPEAKER_00]: Because I can't be keeping up with the Jones it. [SPEAKER_00]: I, with this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember when um, oh, shoot, what's that color? [SPEAKER_00]: It's like something gold. [SPEAKER_00]: It was really popular for a long [SPEAKER_00]: You go to like TJ Maxx and they would have like the rose gold iPhone cases and rose gold pencil you know what I mean okay it's like that really warm pinkish kind of color That was so big for such a long time and you could go on Pinterest and you could see these just incredible interiors of [SPEAKER_00]: And that was cool for five years, and then it's super dated, super quick.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there are people who enjoy this so much and they're so good at it, they can just fluidly flip. [SPEAKER_00]: I can't do that. [SPEAKER_00]: I can't do that. [SPEAKER_00]: And so, if you're like me, you kind of need to think about that from the beginning, what's something that will stand the test of time.

[SPEAKER_00]: For example, if you look at design books from now to the 90s to the 70s to the 50s, [SPEAKER_00]: a beautiful vintage wood table centered in a room. [SPEAKER_00]: Always good, always good. [SPEAKER_00]: So like what are the pieces that will withstand the test of time? [SPEAKER_00]: And then just choose those ones instead because then you don't have to worry about if you have a really trendy table really modern lighting.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well at some point, you know, shade carpet was really modern and it was really popular and then 10 years pass and everybody had to rip it out. [SPEAKER_00]: not being trendy sometimes, it's so full. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, number seven, too many throw pillows. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, how big of a problem this is for a lot of people assist a big problem?

[SPEAKER_01]: Too many throw pillows? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_01]: Where are we talking about the pillows that come with? [SPEAKER_01]: Try to figure out why I have this on the list what I was thinking when I didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: Are we talking about like the sofas that come with like 87 pillows?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, be normal. [SPEAKER_00]: Just be normal, have a normal amount, have a normal amount. [SPEAKER_00]: Same thing with throw blankets. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, when, with had guests come over and they sink into the couch and it's like, there's like three blankets piled and they gotta move all these pillows around.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have that before. [SPEAKER_00]: And then I took note, and I was like, okay, they don't want to swim on your couch. [SPEAKER_00]: They just, you know, they just wanna sit around. [SPEAKER_00]: want to just build a sit around, have a normal amount of pillows behind them that they can manipulate if they need to, but you know, when guests start like pushing them to the end of the couch or setting them on the floor, that, yeah, just check it, just check it and check the types.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think getting a beautiful array of pillows, whether you find them on eBay or at thrift stores, like you said at the beginning not too much, you're going to be fine here. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're going to be fine. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, next one's kind of a spin-off of the Tuscan. [SPEAKER_01]: Want to take this one?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just outdated kitchen details. [SPEAKER_00]: It just does date your house. [SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully, hopefully we can all just come together and there will be world peace and we will stop doing such trendy things in big decisions like cabinet tree or countertops. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, [SPEAKER_00]: Countertops really change in terms of aesthetics.

[SPEAKER_00]: My sister just pulled down, she had a fireplace in her living room, and it was covered with black, square, something, tile that had sparkly specks in it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like a glittery black tile. [SPEAKER_00]: Very, very dated. [SPEAKER_00]: And she's lived, we talked about painting it, we tile like, what do we do?

[SPEAKER_00]: That's also what's on her countertops in her kitchen. [SPEAKER_00]: And she pulled, finally, she's just like, you know what, screw it. [SPEAKER_00]: She started pulling this tile off of her fireplace because it's like one of those floor to ceiling. [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my. [SPEAKER_00]: And behind it was perfect white brick. [SPEAKER_00]: Not totally perfect. [SPEAKER_00]: So somebody covered up with a trendy tile. [SPEAKER_00]: What was that called? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, but I know what you mean. [SPEAKER_01]: I know exactly what you're talking about.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like a quartz, yeah, looking. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So look, if you like, like we mentioned, if you do have money, it's just a good thing to pay attention to. [SPEAKER_00]: To have a timeless kitchen, that can be a great goal. [SPEAKER_00]: If you're moving in or you're renting, there's a lot you can do to cover some of these things with paint.

[SPEAKER_00]: paint paint your cabinets my mom spray painted her cabinets and I've worked great because way harder than brush on paint. [SPEAKER_00]: Or you know you can buy big beautiful cutting boards and just fill up a ton of that counter space with your cutting boards and just break it up a little bit.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Just try to break it up. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah switching out knobs is a really affordable [SPEAKER_00]: taking down window dressings, taking down dated window dressings, that can be helpful, filling it with timeless beautiful pieces, which is like what we've had both had to do with rental houses.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like let's fill it with pieces that we think are beautiful even if they're over a skeleton. [SPEAKER_00]: That's, you know, maybe not what we would choose. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, number nine. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Number nine is fake plants and flowers.

[SPEAKER_01]: Namely Ivy, back to the Ivy. [SPEAKER_00]: Dusty, so what, we really, really embraced fake plants for a season there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what was that? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: Every doctor's office on the back of every toilet was some sort of fake plant. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't get that.

[SPEAKER_01]: I, Hobby Lobby did not help. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's what you walk into. [SPEAKER_01]: That's the first aisle that you walk in is the faux flowers. [SPEAKER_00]: was like one of the first things I did. [SPEAKER_00]: I even did a blog post on it. [SPEAKER_00]: You want to dig through the archives and really appreciate how far I've come in my design abilities, but I remember making silk flower arrangements and I was good at it like this is what I did for a living you know was floral design.

[SPEAKER_00]: but I made these silk arrangements and I put them out in our first house, newly married, and I just thought, look at me again. [SPEAKER_00]: The problem is, three months in, they're dusty. [SPEAKER_00]: You can't ever fully clean them. [SPEAKER_00]: You have, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're dated.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it makes your home look the same day, today, today, today, today. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's not life, that's weird and fake. [SPEAKER_00]: And that dates it to me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm not a big, I mean, there are very, very well-done full house plants. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but they're expensive.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you're going to really get a a really great look, you're going to spend the money. [SPEAKER_01]: And maybe that's the right thing for you. [SPEAKER_01]: If caring for a house plant is not your vibe. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's beautiful spider plants. [SPEAKER_01]: There's beautiful olive trees in pots.

[SPEAKER_01]: You can do beautiful foe, but I don't think you [SPEAKER_01]: I think a vase of silk sunflowers is outdated. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree. [SPEAKER_00]: No more need to be said. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: This last one is a little bit more honing in on design scale.

[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like that's more of what we're focusing on in the old world design society. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is ignoring scale. [SPEAKER_01]: And [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's really outdated, or if it just lacks finesse. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, you tell me, but what I'm talking about is rugs that are too small for an area, you know, you got that big sectional from Costco in your big family room, and then you put an eight by ten rug in there.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, art that's too high or art that isn't big enough for the walls or small enough for the walls, um, I think it's just something to be mindful of, so I, I think that it just has a more generic look, your home has a more generic look. [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't feel as personal when you're ignoring scale.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, this is one of those things where I would encourage people to actually get off of Pinterest. [SPEAKER_00]: get a design book you know get a design book go look on Amazon like perfect English we've had Ross by him shot on here before she did perfect English townhouse perfect English cottage perfect English [SPEAKER_00]: everything, everything, okay?

[SPEAKER_00]: Those are, just get one of those, get any of those. [SPEAKER_00]: And when I sit down to do a room, I will just flip through and every time I flip through I'm paying attention to something else. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's, this time, we're gonna pay attention to textures. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's look at this room, what textures are going on?

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's, what layers are going on? [SPEAKER_00]: How did they do the art on the wall? [SPEAKER_00]: I love when I look at those design books and I see gallery walls and like some of the pictures [SPEAKER_01]: I love that. [SPEAKER_01]: My kitchen that is forever a skew. [SPEAKER_01]: And to me, it's so stinking and charming.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, big mass of, I've like five or six, the whole theme is haystacks. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just have one that's always like, yeah, we'll not stay, but it's molded. [SPEAKER_01]: And it just looks, yeah, I think it looks cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think. [SPEAKER_00]: Even if you don't understand what's happening and I'm not saying follow somebody else's idea of what they think is beautiful.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm saying there is something that is true about the fundamentals of design and scale is one of those things and so sitting down with one of these books and just paying attention to that it's not saying design your house this way or that way it's saying pay attention to. [SPEAKER_00]: color schemes.

[SPEAKER_00]: Pay attention to scale. [SPEAKER_00]: Pay attention to textures. [SPEAKER_00]: Pay attention to lighting. [SPEAKER_00]: Every time you flip through, you're going to see it with different eyes. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's really helpful because what it does is it actually trains your mind to see things.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then you can go out and create whatever you want with the principles in place that make it work. [SPEAKER_00]: So it doesn't look [SPEAKER_01]: uh, I don't think there's anything wrong with copying someone though. [SPEAKER_01]: I think if you are like brand new to this, that copying is a really safe place to be and sure enough, you'll get to a point in the copy where you're like, but I don't like that like, and then you learn outlights, you do like, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I did that with my living room.

[SPEAKER_00]: I painted it two shades of yellow. [SPEAKER_00]: And I found it, I found a picture. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't of a living room. [SPEAKER_00]: But it had two shades of yellow. [SPEAKER_00]: It had elements of like a wicker bamboo, like kind of a darker texturey thing going on, which is where I got the idea for the bamboo shades.

[SPEAKER_00]: It had this beautiful old cabinet with, it's had stone floors, a beautiful old cabinet with this plant on top. [SPEAKER_00]: big vines everywhere and I was like, okay, so we need greenery, we need foliage, we need the element of stones somewhere, even if it's stone planters, right, we need the element of a textured wicker something, whether it's lamp shades or like even like a bamboo [SPEAKER_00]: What's that called, jute rug?

[SPEAKER_00]: Something. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, just pick the elements out of it. [SPEAKER_00]: Copy, they put the elements together. [SPEAKER_00]: Good enough to be in a design book. [SPEAKER_00]: So, just take them and run with it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So. [SPEAKER_01]: The encouragement is that updating your home doesn't always mean thousands of dollars.

[SPEAKER_01]: It can. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's very fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: But sometimes it's just about fresh eyes and editing and creating, you know, timeless decorating isn't about chasing trends. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just about keeping it fresh. [SPEAKER_01]: Things current and classic.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Keep it fresh. [SPEAKER_01]: We hope you found this encouraging and a little amusing and that you have now your assignment for the week. [SPEAKER_01]: Just go play around in your house. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, plan the next project. [SPEAKER_01]: We're so glad you're here.

[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see you next Monday, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Or I don't know if this one too. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if this one. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a little confused at this point. [SPEAKER_00]: Angela and I are both going to be gone. [SPEAKER_00]: She'll be in France. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll be in Italy.

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll wave to each other on the planes as we. [SPEAKER_00]: past mid-air, alright ladies, but we will be back here with you in a few days for the next episode. [SPEAKER_00]: Cheers! [SPEAKER_00]: Cheers!
