She Smells Water Inside a Welded-Shut Cistern: The Mills Ranch Mystery
Fear that something impossible is quietly wrong: a welded hatch sealed in 1991 hid four to six feet of cold standing water detected in 2011, and the mineral fingerprint pointed not to rain but to a pressurized aquifer 1,100 feet below - so how did deep groundwater find its way into a sealed cistern? What opened the path, and who could have missed it for two decades?
In this episode, we follow the chain of discovery from a retired teacher’s nose to thermal imaging, ground-penetrating radar, and geochemical analysis, tracing how a sealed concrete cistern filled silently over an estimated 18 months to 2 years and raising the question of how deep pressurized water breached a welded hatch.
Person: Julie Hayes
Person: William Mills
Person: Joe Brink
Date: March 1991 (weld)
Date: February 2011 (discovery)
- The cistern hatch was welded shut in March 1991 with a continuous circumferential weld and the welder’s work order still existed.
- Julie Hayes detected the smell of standing water approximately twenty feet away on a dry February morning in 2011 after less than three inches of rain in the previous fourteen months.
- Thermal imaging identified a roughly four-foot-tall rectangular zone of colder temperature along the lower third of the south wall.
- Ground-penetrating radar and coring found four to six feet of standing water sealed inside the cistern.
- Geochemical analysis showed elevated calcium, elevated magnesium, and dissolved silica ratios matching the Garland layer, a pressurized aquifer about 1,100 feet below the surface.
