The Music Box Under Silo Five: Who Wound It at Midnight?

A tiny music box played on a January morning at with its cylinder turning in eleven-degree air, no power, no footprints, and an undisturbed ring of frost around Silo Five - who wound it, and why had no one heard or recorded anything like this for decades? Strange night hums began in October 2015, followed by grooves inside Silo Five and a two-year record that ends with the ground finally giving up what it hid; what connects the melody to the mysterious acoustic pattern Kelly tracked?

In this episode, we tell the documentary account compiled from a forty-one-entry handwritten log, an acoustic engineering analysis, a geotechnical survey, and an investigative record by journalist Steven Ford, covering events from fall 2015 through spring 2017 and asking whether the recorded sounds, the interior grooves, and the music box are parts of the same unexplained phenomenon.

Person: Kelly Stewart
Date: January 7, 2017
Location: Silo Five, Harmon County
Case: Handwritten log of forty-one entries
Author: Steven Ford (investigative record)

- At AM on a Tuesday in January 2017 a music box sat upright in frost at the northeastern foundation seam with its lid open and cylinder turning.
- The ambient temperature at discovery was eleven degrees and had not risen above fifteen degrees since the previous afternoon.
- Kelly Stewart logged forty-one entries from fall 2015 to spring 2017, noting date, time, temperature, precipitation, and duration of the sound.
- Nightly near-tonal hums occurred consistently between PM and AM beginning in October 2015 and peaked in January-February 2016 before stopping by summer.
- In spring 2016 Kelly found shallow horizontal grooves inside Silo Five, spaced roughly three inches apart around the interior base.
