The Girl Who Never Was, Yet Always Was

The Girl Who Never Was, Yet Always Was

Jack has a photograph of himself at prom with a girl named Mary Elizabeth Riley, but he remembers going with Esther. He can't recall the moment he met Esther; she was simply always there, an associate professor of anthropology he loved for most of his adult life. What happened to Esther, and why does Jack now question everything he believes about her existence?

In this episode, we hear Jack's account of Esther, a brilliant anthropologist who specialized in isolated communities and their self-contained mythologies. Her first trip to a tribe in Brazil twenty years ago marked a profound change, leading to strange behaviors, unsettling dreams, and a chilling conversation about identity and change.
