The First Jews in the Americas: Fleeing the Inquisition to Brazil

Jewish History Nerds won two Signal Awards, gold and listener's choice in the history category. If you enjoy this show, please comment wherever you get your podcasts. We'll be back soon with a brand new season of episodes.

Fleeing the Inquisition, Crypto-Jews who had been forced to hide their faith for generations found refuge in Recife, Brazil — and for the first time, rebuilt Jewish life in the open. When Recife fell, twenty-three Jewish refugees set sail for New Amsterdam, launching the birth of Jewish America. Schwab and Yael tell the remarkable story in the first episode of a new series on Jews in the Americas.

This the episode submitted to the Signal Awards for Consideration. Don't miss part 2: Jewish Pirates And the Caribbean (unpacked.media/jewish-pirates-and-the-caribbean)
