<p><span>D’Arcy Carden talks with Kyle Meredith about dropping into the latest season of </span><em>Loot</em><span> on Apple TV+ as Adam Scott’s extremely extra “Italian” girlfriend Lutiana/Ashley-Kate, and how much of that bananas character (and those Italian/Delaware accents) came from the page vs. her own improv. [SPEAKER_03]: Today, talking with Darcy Kardon, you know, the actor who made being a relentlessly chipper after life receptionist, a career high point in the good life. [SPEAKER_03]: and then immediately turned around and still every scene in Barry. [SPEAKER_03]: She is one of the greatest comedians on TV right now.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, you've seen her in the good place. [SPEAKER_03]: You've seen her in Barry, she's in a league of their own, and today we get to talk about the show Loot on Apple TV Plus. [SPEAKER_03]: Of course, we already had [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Michaela J. Rodriguez and Ron Funches on here just a few weeks ago to talk about this new season, but now Darcy and I get to dig in, uh, she plays Adam Scott's extremely extra Italian girlfriend, Luciana, or Ashley Kate, uh, depending on what part of the season you're on.

[SPEAKER_03]: And we get to talk about [SPEAKER_03]: uh... just how much of that bananas character in and those incredible accents uh... came from the page versus her own improv will get into working with director carry brownstein of course you know her as one half of slater cany but on the show before shooting in australia with will forte uh... how she balances all this with her other work uh... darsie's also going to dig into her [SPEAKER_03]: very real music nerds side, birthday shows at Largo with the Crutchfield sisters, snowcaps, waxy hatchy, surprise moments with Lini Cravitz, Jeff Tweety, Courtney Barnett, 80 Bryant's, and more, and we'll also talk about who she wants to see in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, because when we take this, that had just happened.

[SPEAKER_03]: So all that and more, as we talk about, [SPEAKER_03]: I'm such a big fan of every time that you're on the screen, I mean that, but especially seeing you in loot and this, but Nana's characters that you get to play. [SPEAKER_04]: The Nana's is so perfect. [SPEAKER_04]: That's such a good way to describe this while lady.

[SPEAKER_03]: So, like, this is one of those characters, like, how much of her is on the page and how much do you get to bring into that? [SPEAKER_04]: I, you know, when I read this script, I was, I could like see it all, the writers of loot are so funny, Sudie Green, I think wrote this episode, truly like deep, deeply funny people, Gabe Leadman and Matt Hubbard and all those guys.

[SPEAKER_04]: So it was, it really was all on the page, but there were also really playful and loose and, you know, welcoming of ideas [SPEAKER_04]: Like, you know, I like, I'm about to say the right way, meaning like sticking with what they've given and not taking us into some new dimension. [SPEAKER_04]: But we, it was just like pure joy.

[SPEAKER_04]: And that's one of those scripts or it's like a gift of a script. [SPEAKER_04]: It's like getting to do this sort of dual character with this like reveal is just both of them so over the top [SPEAKER_04]: I kept thinking them. [SPEAKER_04]: I just kept being like, this is the gift of a lifetime.

[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_03]: Because you sort of do get to play two characters within this one. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we have the Italian accent. [SPEAKER_03]: Is it Delaware? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I think, you know, it's like, [SPEAKER_04]: Delaware Baltimore, I think it's Delaware.

[SPEAKER_04]: I think she's from Delaware, but yes, yes. [SPEAKER_04]: My other reason they even say Baltimore is because I had some dialect coaching from one of my best friends, Brandon Scott Jones, who's from Baltimore, and then a little bit of dialect coaching from one of the writers, Citi Green, who I think is from Delaware.

[SPEAKER_04]: So it's like a little bit of delico or whatever. [SPEAKER_04]: It was not something I had previously known how to do at all. [SPEAKER_03]: Right. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm guessing that accent is a bit harder to get [SPEAKER_04]: You know, yeah, I mean, it's the funny, yes, it totally is that the, like Delco accent is so, so particular and not in my mouth, you know, and Italian is sort of like, it's not in my mouth.

[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of Italian is like we've all sort of done some sort of Italian accent, but I really struggled with that one too and not to just talk accent work, but I love. [SPEAKER_04]: doing accents, I love, I've always loved it. [SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like I have a good ear for it. [SPEAKER_04]: But these two in particular, I don't have in my bones.

[SPEAKER_04]: So it really, it really was watching a lot of Italian videos and then talking to my two friends who are from the right spot. [SPEAKER_03]: It's so fun just watching her kind of go in and out of that, too. [SPEAKER_03]: Because it is the, you know, the mask up and down thing. [SPEAKER_03]: That's fine.

[SPEAKER_02]: Just that. [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, I'll get off the accents too, but I was noticing because you're shooting an Australian one as well, or like, I don't know if you're doing that in accent, but still just the idea of I shut that with Will, the wonderful wonderful Will for today, and neither of us we're playing Americans, but everybody else is Australian and we, you know, spent four months in Australia, so we were, you know, [SPEAKER_04]: we were surrounded by it and trying it out and getting it wrong and getting it right and by the end of the, my stay there, I was pretty good.

[SPEAKER_03]: You could be convincing at this point. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I could do like little sentences. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I could just like, and that's also part of learning a new accent on a comedy where they let you sort of improvises. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, I don't know if I can improvise in an Italian accent or a Delaware accent.

[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, I've studied these words down to the letter. [SPEAKER_03]: uh... what you get other moments i don't like to sit and i don't know what's in problem what's not but like when we see the luchiana right that's that's that's it yeah it would be the when a set of scene with her entrance and not only do you say it but then you give the little shake that goes along like what a perfect entrance that is great thank you thank you i feel like uh... the director carry brown scene the amazing carry brown scene [SPEAKER_04]: I know, I know, I'm sure she's on your wall somewhere.

[SPEAKER_04]: I was going to bring her up, but yeah, that was her, she really had that, like, in her mind exactly what she wanted. [SPEAKER_04]: She, like, the light and the entrance and the slow mo, like, the way she described it and the way it turned out, I was like, oh, yeah, you really knew what you wanted.

[SPEAKER_04]: So that, I gave all credit to the amazing carry. [SPEAKER_03]: The shaken and then the kiss, the kiss, the kiss everybody. [SPEAKER_03]: You kiss everybody. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I kiss everybody, and I'll tell you what, there is a couple of takes on the cutting room floor, [SPEAKER_04]: where I probably kiss my F4 45 seconds.

[SPEAKER_04]: And I would love it to be leaked at some point, because I don't know how we kept it together. [SPEAKER_04]: It definitely at one point we laughed in each other's mouths. [SPEAKER_04]: But I know that one kiss was so long that we both opened our eyes and started like, look around. [SPEAKER_03]: It makes it weird a little bit.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_03]: It's the difference seeing into my mouth. [SPEAKER_04]: But what? [SPEAKER_03]: That's so. [SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back. [SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Manus with Darcy Kardon. [SPEAKER_03]: I love those moments there and you know I use that word bananas at the beginning too because because the further we go along with her [SPEAKER_03]: knowing that she throws these lines out, like when's the first time you're 69?

[SPEAKER_03]: Um, like, like, before the reveal, you get to know like she knows that this stuff is crazy that she's saying, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Right, right, right, right. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, you're kind of like, there's something off, right? [SPEAKER_04]: You're, there's no way that she could really be, but I mean, [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.

[SPEAKER_04]: It's funny. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't really know what I'm like allowed to reveal. [SPEAKER_04]: I think I'm allowed to reveal that I'm in more episodes. [SPEAKER_04]: If I'm not shoot me dead, right? [SPEAKER_03]: I'll be we'll be doing this at the end of the season too. [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah.

[SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Great. [SPEAKER_04]: Great. [SPEAKER_04]: Great. [SPEAKER_04]: But you definitely see more of this this woman and her wild brain and. [SPEAKER_04]: I really like to say crazy anymore. [SPEAKER_04]: I really like to say crazy anymore. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, yeah, yes, she is ambitious.

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, she's just like, she's on another level. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just pure fun. [SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like it, you know, in influences, impacts, everything that Luciano was, that Mary Kate, you know. [SPEAKER_03]: It all sort of makes sense, you know, you brought up Kerry, and I definitely wanted to ask, because yes, Senator Kenny, Kerry Brownstein, the whole thing.

[SPEAKER_03]: She's been on the show a few times. [SPEAKER_03]: I absolutely love them. [SPEAKER_03]: Having her as a director, though, tell me about that experience. [SPEAKER_04]: It was wonderful. [SPEAKER_04]: I've known Kerry for years, but we've never worked together. [SPEAKER_04]: And when you know someone as when you're a fan of them and then you meet them, I always always a little bit like weird around her.

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, just a little bit like quiet. [SPEAKER_04]: So it was so fun to get to work with her in something like this where she was jet, she's so funny and she's so like giddy about comedy. [SPEAKER_04]: It was fun to like, she's almost like wiggling around like she'd come up with these ideas or she'd be behind the monitor watching us or whatever and she's just like giddy like wiggly.

[SPEAKER_04]: And you know, she's so cool and she's just like rocker or whatever, but the truth is she's like, [SPEAKER_04]: so full of life and fun and really was so helpful because again, not to talk accents, but it was intimidating. [SPEAKER_04]: And so I feel comfortable on the set of a comedy with these people that I know and love, but I was like a little in my head because I wanted to nail the accents, and I just was another layer to add on, and she really put me at ease and did some [SPEAKER_04]: Cool director moves that I was like, oh, you're really good at this.

[SPEAKER_04]: You really know how to get a good, you know, make people feel at ease and like let them be their best. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I mean, you hold your own in that world. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, in the rock star world, too. [SPEAKER_03]: I see a video that you posted of stopping Lenny Kravitz in his tracks.

[SPEAKER_03]: which my blowing by the way. [SPEAKER_04]: Mine blown on me too. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean that was quite a moment. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then you know the crush field sister is which Katie, I've heard you're too. [SPEAKER_03]: Have you heard the new snow caps thing? [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, I've heard it for a long time.

[SPEAKER_04]: They sent us to me a really long time ago. [SPEAKER_04]: Not to brag, not to brag. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I think they sent me that in, I don't know, may or something. [SPEAKER_04]: So my sister and I have been listening to that for a long time. [SPEAKER_04]: We, I share a birthday with the Crutchfield sisters.

[SPEAKER_04]: We really, that's how we last year, and a little bit the year before, but really last year, we put on a birthday show at Largo in LA, and we, you know, I love singing. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not, I'm not a rockstar, and I'm not in their world, but they know I love singing, and that I especially love singing harmony with, you know, like I love, my dream is [SPEAKER_04]: through.

[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_04]: I love it. [SPEAKER_04]: I love it. [SPEAKER_04]: I love it. [SPEAKER_04]: So we put on this birthday show with her with her amazing wax, with with Katie's wax, a hatchy band backing us up. [SPEAKER_04]: And we had, um, we had 80 Brian come out and sing a song. [SPEAKER_04]: We had Caleb here on.

[SPEAKER_04]: We had Will Forte. [SPEAKER_04]: We had Jeff Tweedy. [SPEAKER_04]: It was, we had Courtney Barnett. [SPEAKER_04]: It was incredible. [SPEAKER_04]: We're doing it again. [SPEAKER_04]: We haven't announced that yet. [SPEAKER_04]: Oops. [SPEAKER_04]: I'll tell you whatever. [SPEAKER_04]: I think we announced it on stage last year that we were doing it again.

[SPEAKER_04]: So right now we're picking our songs and putting our putting our our playlists together. [SPEAKER_03]: Man, Largo is so the perfect place to do that too. [SPEAKER_04]: It really was it was very magical. [SPEAKER_03]: It was well, I know what I have to do next year. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: And make my way back over your part of the country. [SPEAKER_04]: That's where I am. [SPEAKER_04]: Where are you? [SPEAKER_03]: I'm in Louisville. [SPEAKER_03]: Just near nothing. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, who knows? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we'll do, we said we decided that we'll do this birthday show every year until we die.

[SPEAKER_04]: So you got some time. [SPEAKER_03]: Get some time. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: That's cool, real quick, because I know I'm going to wrap up, it's because we're here, who still needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, totally on the spot. [SPEAKER_04]: I just don't know if I'm also like who's in and who's not and who's who's um, who's eligible.

[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, eligible, that's true. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we just got to White Stripes and that was the whole thing, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: That was amazing. [SPEAKER_04]: I wonder if the strokes are coming up. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, though, they'll be eligible. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that would be, I mean, I feel like they were really influential with the music scene and [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I'm, I'm, I'm giving this to us.

[SPEAKER_03]: And that makes sense. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that completely blew the door up and for that scene. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: All right. [SPEAKER_04]: Who do you think? [SPEAKER_04]: Who's your, who's your pick? [SPEAKER_03]: Who do I think? [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I should have had the answer for them.

[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, I mean, my favorite band's just got in. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, that's, you like, all of a sudden I was like, oh, but everybody I can think of. [SPEAKER_03]: Like everybody's getting in there. [SPEAKER_03]: But you do, like, right, you know, it's rage in the other and there too.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, are they? [SPEAKER_03]: Death cab, I can't wait for death cab to be in there. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's great. [SPEAKER_04]: I love that. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're eligible now. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought I just saw the reunion tour. [SPEAKER_03]: It's good.

[SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_03]: Cool. [SPEAKER_03]: All right. [SPEAKER_03]: Loots, Lootsiana, Mary Ash, Mary Kate, Mary Kate. [SPEAKER_04]: Actually, Kate, Kate. [SPEAKER_04]: I got this actually. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: It's so good. [SPEAKER_03]: It's so good. [SPEAKER_03]: What you do and all the other bits that you're doing out there right now.

[SPEAKER_03]: And it's so much fun to talk to you. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much. [SPEAKER_04]: You too. [SPEAKER_04]: What a blast. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you so much. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm going to be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_03]: Now, we just had, of course, McKayla J. Rodriguez and Ron Funches on here to talk about that, this same season, but I want to go ahead and include that interview on here once more since we're already talking about loot.

[SPEAKER_03]: So if you didn't catch this when the first time, part two today, to talk about loot, here's Kyle Meredith with McKayla J. Rodriguez and Ron Funches. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey. [SPEAKER_03]: Bicking grass. [SPEAKER_03]: I love the season so much. [SPEAKER_03]: You guys are amazing in it as usual.

[SPEAKER_03]: What's it like, Michaela J made me start with you here? [SPEAKER_03]: Well, what's it like because three seasons in, right? [SPEAKER_03]: Like this is the third time you get to return to a character. [SPEAKER_03]: Like how easy is it to find that groove, to find that, because because your character is so high strong anyway, to be in that.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's the people you work with more importantly, and I have a lucky and blessed to work with not only extreme professionalists and iconic people and who will take their craft seriously, but we really care for each other. [SPEAKER_01]: We have a deep food to care for each other, and we also know that we both have a love for our craft.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's really great to wake up in the morning and though I get to like see their faces every single day and a smile and be happy. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I love when I get to see Stephanie and we talk about musical theater. [SPEAKER_01]: I love when I see Ron and Joel and we're talking about games, Pokemon, Marvel rivals, would you play it?

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and me and my, we're talking about fashion. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the list can go on. [SPEAKER_01]: I can, it's, it's a really great place to come into and that's why our chemistry rocks on camera because we Who rooted in solidified it throughout these years and also just throughout our work.

[SPEAKER_03]: Does this, this playing someone so high strong like that does that ever rub off like just to be so tense. [SPEAKER_01]: No, Ron can attest to the I am a fool in a half. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a whole fool. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to say it happen anymore. [SPEAKER_01]: I am silly backstage.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it does not rub off. [SPEAKER_01]: And if anything, I run away from my wife. [SPEAKER_01]: I can just if I were in like in real life to get a chance to say to Sophie, I'm like, are you going to smell the flowers? [SPEAKER_01]: You really do. [SPEAKER_03]: We'll run for you for you, like.

[SPEAKER_03]: Like, when do you offer us learned about this story's arcs and everything? [SPEAKER_03]: Because seeing where everyone gets to go with this season, like, do you get to have opinions in it? [SPEAKER_03]: Do you kind of take it as it is? [SPEAKER_03]: How does that part of the process work?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a great collaboration. [SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the best parts about this job, is that they take a lot of our real life. [SPEAKER_00]: Loves are situations that happen to us and ask if we're okay with using them in the show. [SPEAKER_00]: And like the second season, my arc about pro wrestling and starting my own league was just all based off the fact that, um, what a couple of the writers knew that I had trained to be a pro wrestler and had a couple matches.

[SPEAKER_00]: So they were like, let's put that in the show. [SPEAKER_00]: So usually, you know, a few months before we start shooting, they'll kind of invite us in to the writers room and kind of present [SPEAKER_00]: what they think in, and then ask us for our own input about what we would like to do, and it's just become pretty easy, because it thinks, especially with the surrecies, and they have a great handle on the character.

[SPEAKER_00]: So they just kind of told me what they were thinking, and I didn't really have, I was like, yep, that sounds great. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's do it. [SPEAKER_00]: That's it. [SPEAKER_03]: Does it work the same way with the lines? [SPEAKER_03]: Because we're on, you've got, I mean, some of those lines.

[SPEAKER_03]: I could write some down for every episode, but I'd pick two here with [SPEAKER_03]: country musician Roger Clinton has a brother, which I thought was fantastic. [SPEAKER_03]: And there's a ghost in the toilet, and he wants to talk to you. [SPEAKER_03]: Like is that coming from the writers?

[SPEAKER_03]: Is that coming from you? [SPEAKER_03]: Because that feels so very specific to you. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a mix. [SPEAKER_00]: And I will say both of those were from the writers. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's a great collaboration with they allow us to improvise and we were improvising all day long, but like the writing is gotten so good and so specific to us is one of my favorite things about the show is that they never write a joke that can be interchangeable.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a joke that comes out of my mouth that was sound natural coming out of Sofia's or coming out of Nicholas. [SPEAKER_00]: they're all from a unique perspective. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that allows a blend of where you don't know, was that improvised, was that written? [SPEAKER_00]: One of my favorite parts about being Howard is that I show up to work pretty much.

[SPEAKER_00]: Howard, I'm she's probably the furthest from her character and I'm the closest because like I'll show up to work in my regular clothes and they just like, [SPEAKER_00]: like, oh, are you already ready? [SPEAKER_00]: You're on set. [SPEAKER_00]: We dress alike, we're pretty much the same thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just the fun place to be. [SPEAKER_00]: It's speaking of close. [SPEAKER_03]: I've got to bring up the new beach episode with Henry Winkler, because I feel like that's going to be a pretty iconic episode, not just in this show, but maybe in TV history, to there. [SPEAKER_03]: That's, I know that's, I've got, I hope there's some television magic going on in there, but what was it like shooting that episode?

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I enjoyed shooting it. [SPEAKER_01]: I think on the personal note when we were, you know, behind the scenes, Henry was such a father figure, like he's such a sweet and generous person and soul, and he I remember like him giving me a kiss on the forehead and I was like, oh my God, thank you so much.

[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know how much it's been to me. [SPEAKER_01]: And there are also moments. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure that you've had with him too. [SPEAKER_01]: They're like, like, he's amazing. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, but yeah, actually, I [SPEAKER_00]: I run out to run it to him at dinner on occasion.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now he come up and say hi to me. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the best thing you wanted the best things in my life. [SPEAKER_00]: So I would say just being able to see a legend like that who still is down the play and down to be silly and was just so inviting and complimentary of all of us like he was aware of our work.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he still, if I post up comedy that I put online, he's one of the first people to leave many comments [SPEAKER_00]: is a true pleasure to get to work with him, and I just wanted to say, we shot that in January, so it was cold, and so for not just Henry, but for all the background, all the extras that we're working that day, they really put in a lot of work, and they were pretty much but naked, so it was a lot harder than it looked.

[SPEAKER_00]: They made it look like paradise and fun, but trust me, they were cold and not feeling it. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm glad you really liked that episode, because it was a lot [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, now I got a newer respect for it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's on top of that, which by the way, you quickly point up because you mentioned your comedy because then you get the comedy tour and Michaela J.

[SPEAKER_03]: Two to Tango, that latest single is so great as well. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm hoping that there's more new music behind that as well. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're coming soon.
