Kyle Meredith catches up with David Thewlis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster to talk Season 2 of Hulu’s The Artful Dodger. Thewlis points to Fagin’s new status (wealthier, unhingier, and no longer Dodger’s underling) and the arrival of Inspector Boxer — a “bad guy” who’s inconveniently ethical, educated, and annoyingly handsome. Brodie-Sangster says they’re basically done worrying about Dickens now (“our source material becomes season one”), talks about having to “find the voice again” after the break, and admits the medical jargon goes in one ear and out the other. Also: Brodie-Sangster wants more running and action; Thewlis wants less running, more head-shaving (which he calls “liberating”). He also reveals that he kept an actual beard diary to time his facial hair around other gigs.

Listen to David Thewlis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster chat about all this and more or watch it on YouTube. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Kyle Mayrath, it's been a fun week around here.
[SPEAKER_02]: Lots happening, just watch the trailer for the drama and look, A24, they've already got me by default, but this one looks especially intriguing. [SPEAKER_02]: If you haven't seen it, it's out there you can watch it now, written and directed by Christopher Burgley. [SPEAKER_02]: It stars Zindaya, Robert Pattinson, a lot of high-em who's been on the show before, among many other cast in this killer lineup.
[SPEAKER_02]: And really interesting setup, maybe you would call it deceptively simple, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Days before they're wedding, what looks like a total storybook romance between Zindaya's character and Robert Pattinson's character takes a hard left when something comes out. [SPEAKER_02]: They don't let us know what?
[SPEAKER_02]: And whatever's in die is character's done, it's bad. [SPEAKER_02]: or maybe just feels bad. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't know, that's kind of the fun here. [SPEAKER_02]: It could be literally anything, which leaves the whole thing wide open to some pretty wild guesses that I've been doing ever since that trailer come out.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's got that unmistakable A24 mood to it. [SPEAKER_02]: What do you say romantic, unsettling, funny, and that slightly creepy way, and that tension, that just kind of hums under everything. [SPEAKER_02]: And it looks cool, man. [SPEAKER_02]: It's the kind of movie that messes with the expectations and really does sit with you afterward.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can watch the trailer now and the drama, whose theater is April 3rd, definitely one I want to see on the big screen. [SPEAKER_02]: But as for what we're doing today today, we are talking about season two of the Artful Dodger, a Hulu original series with actors, David Thielis, and Thomas Brody Singster.
[SPEAKER_02]: David, you've seen he's been doing some incredible work for decades now, like Dragonhardt's seven years in Tibet, the Big Lebowski, [SPEAKER_02]: Harry Potter, of course he played Professor Remis Lupin, we saw him and the boy in the straight pajamas, the theory of everything, and Noah Holmes too, and Thomas Brody sings here.
[SPEAKER_02]: He met the world in his big breakthrough moment at least with love actually, and that drum set that we got to see him on. [SPEAKER_02]: He's played in Nanemic Fee, he's the voice of firm. [SPEAKER_02]: in Phineas and Furb, Jojan Reed in Game of Thrones, of course, the maze runner films that were so huge, nowhere boy, and now seeing him as the title character in the Artful Dodger on Hulu and Disney.
[SPEAKER_02]: And let's read all about it. [SPEAKER_02]: Jack's back, the Artful Dodger returns and he's in deep trouble. [SPEAKER_02]: He's got an appointment with a new, he's being hunted by Inspector Boxer, Port Victories [SPEAKER_02]: Meanwhile, Lady Bell has determined to forge her future in medicine to find expectations and stepping in a danger driven by ambition and a love already hanging in the balance with boxer competing with Jack for Bell's affection, the crafty faggin, let's play by David Thueless.
[SPEAKER_02]: Drex Dodger, into their most dangerous high-st Yet, and a killer is on the loose. [SPEAKER_02]: Get ready for an explosive season of new characters and locations with more thrills. [SPEAKER_02]: Humor, heart, invention, and deception than ever. [SPEAKER_02]: it's a it's such a fun show and and it's a you know because it's also a medical drama so you get to see like I mean you get to see the gross stuff the the fun gross stuff of the medical drama they don't hold back on that stuff so that parts interesting and the romance is great and the twists in the stories and you think [SPEAKER_02]: Like you think it's the show's more simple than it is and the more it goes on it just pulls you in and it gets twist here and twist here I really had so much fun watching it.
[SPEAKER_02]: In fact David deals with what echo me in that as well about just just wanting to tell everybody about this show So we get to hear about Fagan's new status wealthier, unhingier, no longer Dodgers underling in the arrival of that Inspector Boxer [SPEAKER_02]: educated and annoyingly handsome.
[SPEAKER_02]: Thomas says that they're basically done worrying about Dickens now, now that they're past season one kind of, that's the source material and talks about having to find the voice again after a two-year break. [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll talk about, you know, figure out if he can hold on to any of that medical jargon that he spits out so well on the screen.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll talk about the running and the action and the less running that David might once in the beard that he gets to grow and Shavin is head and all that's in more as we discuss season two of the artful dodger Hulu original series. [SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with David dealus and Thomas Brody Sankster right after this Welcome back.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with David dealus and Thomas Brody Sankster [SPEAKER_02]: Hello. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a pleasure to see you both and congratulate you on this on the second season. [SPEAKER_02]: Fantastic show you've all continued. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, start it second season, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, for a lot of shows, you sort of have to break everything. [SPEAKER_02]: You got to break everything and kind of flip it all around. [SPEAKER_02]: But what do you all want to do? [SPEAKER_02]: There's something about this season, and I haven't been able to pinpoint it just yet, but there feels like a bit of a tonal shift.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, obviously, there are things that have really changed, you know, Fagan is now a wealthy man and he's no longer subservient to Dodger and he's now his convict servant and he's living in a rather grand home and his aspirations to accrue even [SPEAKER_03]: more wealth than it's becoming increasingly powerful and increasingly unhinged.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if that's tonal shift, though. [SPEAKER_03]: I hope if there is, it's a good thing. [SPEAKER_03]: I sometimes think that second seasons sometimes cast in crews can get a little too confident and they start to rest on their laurels and become complacent. [SPEAKER_03]: I hope that's not what's happening.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that [SPEAKER_03]: There's a, you know, I think, I think, maybe the biggest thing is the introduction of Boxer, we don't have a very definite bad guy in this because Boxer should be, is replacing gains, but actually Boxer's rather a wonderful person. [SPEAKER_03]: There's nothing, you know, he has good ethics, he's educated, he's ridiculously handsome, [SPEAKER_03]: And he's a plausible suitor for Bell, and I think that maybe that's where there's some kind of tonal shift in terms of character.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's fun to play with it to not have the actual villain in such a way, but to still be able to expand a story like that. [SPEAKER_02]: And you know, for people that's just catching up, I mean, I mean, Thomas, you all are building off of these characters, of course, that you know, you did in the first season.
[SPEAKER_02]: How much do you even consider the books at this point? [SPEAKER_02]: The books? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no, not at all, actually. [SPEAKER_04]: We've already done the first season and kind of learnt what worked with that and feel quite comfortable and confident in taking the characters and moving the show forward.
[SPEAKER_04]: Our source material becomes season one really, which is a nice place to be because you know that what you were doing did work in some way, some capacity. [SPEAKER_04]: draw upon that. [SPEAKER_04]: It's a bit hard when it's two years later and you're going, well what exactly was that again?
[SPEAKER_04]: How did we get there and is this the kind of way I would approach this and is this what I sound like? [SPEAKER_04]: If I'm in that voice again, it takes a couple of takes at least I'd say but it didn't take too long before we were back there and rolling again quite comfortably. [SPEAKER_02]: Do either of you all think about the characters between seasons?
[SPEAKER_02]: Do they stay on your mind at all? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a little. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, for me personally, I really enjoy playing this character very much, so it's, you know, so I'm probably more, I don't think about him, I don't know, it's not like walking the streets going like, I just love for you good.
[SPEAKER_03]: But I probably talk about it a lot, because I want people to watch it because I'm very fond of the show, so people say what have you been doing, or someone says there's something you've done recently, people should watch, I don't really, [SPEAKER_03]: I commend things I've done to people, but I do this, I think a lot of people have seen it and everyone I have recommended it to.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's been very grateful because I think it's surprising and it's surprised people. [SPEAKER_03]: They enjoy it, so I think about it in that respect. [SPEAKER_03]: I bring up in conversation with people, ask me, should they watch something I've been in recently? [SPEAKER_02]: Sure, but it just doesn't, like, like, it's not something on your mind.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I don't know how that works for any actor between seasons. [SPEAKER_03]: Like, you know, to be able to step away from it, to come back, or, or you usually do something else in between hopefully you've gone away and be, you know, I was Sherlock Holmes in between the two seasons. [SPEAKER_03]: So, you've playing, which was completely overtook my mind for several months, you know.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, another, you know, literary, Victorian literary character. [SPEAKER_02]: Thomas, it seems to me that this role requires a lot of running. [SPEAKER_02]: There's so much running in every episode, I feel like you've got to get in shape just to do this. [SPEAKER_04]: I actually wanted more running.
[SPEAKER_04]: You want more running? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I quite like it when Dr. does. [SPEAKER_04]: action. [SPEAKER_04]: I quite like, yeah, I think you should do more running bumpy into people jumping over stuff and his hat and his coat kind of flies around all over the place. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's quite fun and dynamic.
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I wanted more. [SPEAKER_04]: I did a bit of sword fighting. [SPEAKER_04]: The first one, I think, yeah, more of that's fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he's a sailor. [SPEAKER_04]: He should be up and down the mast and [SPEAKER_04]: running around the Dickensian streets when he was a little boy.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think he's like a little dog running around and it's good. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm up for less running. [SPEAKER_03]: I was just doing not to put much running into it. [SPEAKER_04]: It's like the walk that increases in pace. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've sort of taught her a little bit. [SPEAKER_03]: I'll probably do season three in a wheelchair.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_02]: Thomas, do you hold on to the medical jargon at all? [SPEAKER_04]: No, no, it goes in one ear out of the other. [SPEAKER_04]: I just learn how to say the word for that moment and then it's gone. [SPEAKER_04]: But I mean, Dodgers not.
[SPEAKER_04]: Dodgers more, he learns on the job and he works on his instincts. [SPEAKER_04]: So he's not a well-read individual, and it doesn't matter for more character. [SPEAKER_04]: It was my idea that I felt sorry for. [SPEAKER_04]: She had to get. [SPEAKER_04]: She is a very well-read individual, so she was the one that struggled with the big long words.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've heard that from other actors on medical dramas and everything. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I don't know why that's surprising, but it just seems like that's pretty natural. [SPEAKER_02]: That's like, you know, I don't hold on to any of that. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, why would you, you know, go around treating people, and then diagnosing people in your kind of private life.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're stressing through to hang onto it really. [SPEAKER_02]: Someone says, is there a doctor in the house? [SPEAKER_02]: You're the last one. [SPEAKER_03]: I've played one in the big story in the era. [SPEAKER_03]: Is that any use? [SPEAKER_02]: There's a note like that. [SPEAKER_02]: Does the pacing of the show because it is such fast pacing?
[SPEAKER_02]: Does that affect the acting in any specific way? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it makes you try and speak very fast. [SPEAKER_03]: Truly, so when I'm learning my lines, I'm learning them at speed, which is a bit of a bandwidth. [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like you've created a broad-fear-own back by sticking.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really do. [SPEAKER_03]: You have this complicated dialogue. [SPEAKER_03]: Plot heavy kind of expositional but beautifully. [SPEAKER_03]: and dialogue, but you've got to deliver it a great speed. [SPEAKER_03]: So I feel like it is fast, and I think that's a nice thing to keep. [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't slow down very much the show and it's a definite credit that the show has.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I think it's, you know, but it's, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: You guys as in general do quite a bit. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's a common directing tip to just speed it up. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: We do like to add lots of dramatic pauses, especially if we haven't got much to say. [SPEAKER_04]: extend out of the pauses to make most of it.
[SPEAKER_02]: David, I beg only because I heard you talked about this so much during that first round. [SPEAKER_02]: You got to grow the beard back. [SPEAKER_02]: easier this time. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome. [SPEAKER_02]: And here we're here too. [SPEAKER_03]: It's never easy to grab yet. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I have to time that with other jobs, it's kind of in my contract even that I have to finish.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, the, like I said, did the Sherlock Holmes thing. [SPEAKER_03]: It was clean shaven and when we knew we were doing a second season, I kept a beard diary, which I, on my phone, so I took a picture every, not every day, [SPEAKER_03]: This is not, we're doing a season three, because I'm doing something else soon, so I'm growing this for that.
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, and shaving my head, which I love, I love shaving my head, that's a very liberating thing to do, and I don't really like having all this up here. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm just hoping we'll do it again just so I can get all this off again. [SPEAKER_02]: I love the idea of a beard diary, the idea of a beard having a diary anyway, but outside of that, I'll wrap up.
[SPEAKER_02]: Seriously, great job on what you guys do. [SPEAKER_02]: I've so enjoyed these two seasons, and it's been such a pleasure talking to you both. [SPEAKER_02]: You too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you too, you
