[SPEAKER_02]: That's me, Kyle Mere, today we are talking all about pizza movie on Hulu with a gate moderato, Sean Gibroney, and Lulu Wilson. [SPEAKER_02]: Gaten was just here.
[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, you know him as Dustin from Stranger Things. [SPEAKER_02]: We just recently talked about the final season of that. [SPEAKER_02]: Sean played Adam Goldberg on the Goldbergs, Lulu Wilson, among many things we saw as young Shirley in the haunting of Hillhouse. [SPEAKER_02]: And now there's pizza movie on Hulu, a shy college student and his reckless roommate set out on a simple mission to grab pizza, but after a strange dose of a mind-bending experimental drug, they're thrust into chaotic night of absurd encounters, wild hallucinations, and unexpected revelations that could change their lives forever.
[SPEAKER_02]: To call this movie an unhinged ride, [SPEAKER_02]: It's a comedy that takes the simple, late night food run into a full-blown, multi-level hallucination adventure. [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk all about how the script first landed, why they skipped any method research when it came to the drug field premise.
[SPEAKER_02]: And how the film plays like a video game, but with different phases, including body swaps, puppet worlds, and even a butterfly POV. [SPEAKER_02]: There are also going to break down that switcheroo sequence that's one of the levels and how they avoided really tired body swap tropes in favor of something a little bit more sharper, more character-driven, plus the reality of shooting most of the movie inside a transform middle school that really feels like a dozen different locations is very impressive.
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's do this. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get into it. [SPEAKER_02]: We're talking pizza movie out on Hulu, it's Kyle [SPEAKER_02]: It's good to see you all, and say how much fun pizza movie was, by the way. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, thanks, you. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm, uh, I'm imagining you all have spent the, uh, the last week or so just talking about what drugs, pizza and robots?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's pretty much the go of it. [SPEAKER_05]: For sure. [SPEAKER_05]: He was asking about preferred toppings and preferred munchies when on personal extiritions. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, preferred hallucinations. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It was the nation.
[SPEAKER_05]: which was yeah for sure and like that's tough to go about because usually if I'm hallucinating if I don't know if I really could never say I have usually as you do I think it's usually would probably be a negative experience no I don't want to see things I don't want to see things that aren't there but some people do so safe to say that for you all and I'm assuming that there was no real deep research when you go into a movie like this [SPEAKER_05]: I thankfully, I was gonna leave that up to the world so hopefully come to me naturally, rather than through means of impairments.
[SPEAKER_05]: As fun as that may be, I don't know. [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like my brains too, I'm too hot and cold for that. [SPEAKER_05]: Like everyone's like, you gotta be at a really good day in a good mindset. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm like, oh, they're actually consistently stay there for longer than two hours until like, I feel like I would freak myself out and get too up in my own head about it.
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if it's for me. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's uh, Sean, you know, from your board of view, which I've heard from you yet, like this script arrives. [SPEAKER_02]: How does it get pitched to you? [SPEAKER_06]: Well, it just, it's an email. [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I actually, I got sent it.
[SPEAKER_06]: I'm... [SPEAKER_06]: I was there for the table read when they were just trying to get put some voices behind it to hear it out loud for the first time and they just I had read for the original I had read for I think they just saw me as one of like kind of one of the nerdy guys and they they pitched it to me kind of as like a super bad and it was more just for reference and then they could I could like have some understanding going in.
[SPEAKER_06]: It's very different and and it's so I just went and read it and I was like, oh, well, that's really awesome. [SPEAKER_06]: And then But I didn't think I would have like I knew I they were like, well, well, you can audition for it. [SPEAKER_06]: And so I was Got to audition for it and I just really wanted it because it was something that combined.
[SPEAKER_06]: I love buddy comedies and I love Well, I love drugs [SPEAKER_06]: Not a drug guy, but I love the drug movies. [SPEAKER_06]: I care in Coomore and Cheechen Chong and stuff like that. [SPEAKER_06]: So, I don't know, I just was super game. [SPEAKER_06]: I was pumped and then it worked out for me in this one, Gaseo.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a line in the movie, though, where you said, I'm weird and sound like a little old man. [SPEAKER_02]: And I thought, now is that written, and they had to find the character, or is that shun just leaning into the moment? [SPEAKER_06]: I sound less like an old man, and they were hoping.
[SPEAKER_06]: But no, I'm kidding. [SPEAKER_06]: No, I heard it in a YouTube comment, but they're like, this line's not working, and they went through some of my like interviews or something. [SPEAKER_06]: Like, this guy sounds like a old man, and then Brian is like, oh, that's awesome. [SPEAKER_05]: I don't even think the comment was meant as like a mean thing.
[SPEAKER_05]: I think it was like with a heart I think it looked like with like heart and like a cute little like our emoji smiley face For it's like I think this guy sounds like a little old man and then like heart hearts my face So I think the person you made the comment really liked it. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh They wanted to like give me a hug like it was like a hollering compliment.
[SPEAKER_05]: They were like by the way. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't love this Yeah, and we'll be right back right after this [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Manithwood, Gade Mataratsu, Sean Giobroni, and Lulu Wilson. [SPEAKER_02]: Lulu, one of the really fun moments in the movie. [SPEAKER_02]: Of course, we go through these phases of the drum trips and everything, and of course, we get to the switcheroo, which means you get to be Gade and for a bit.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man. [SPEAKER_02]: Tell me about getting into that mindset. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it was the housecape that is my brain. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, we actually did it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we did it. [SPEAKER_03]: We're wasn't sure. [SPEAKER_03]: No, anyway, that was my addition.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, that was your audition? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So I had rehearsed it a lot. [SPEAKER_03]: And I, I, I. [SPEAKER_03]: a pretty good idea of what I was going to do without even knowing who Jack was going to be, but then once we were on set and preparing for that scene, I think we both like, you made like a great little video of you saying my drawings.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I could have a reference point, which was really helpful and really, and really, I forgot about that. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I was kind of jumping off that, but really like I didn't think about it too much. [SPEAKER_03]: I kind of just got to set and I was like, I'm, well, I'm going to let it all hang out.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like I'm going to, I'm going to go crazy. [SPEAKER_03]: And it was really fun, especially doing like the little like partying shots. [SPEAKER_03]: They, there was a bit where they just kept throwing jello shots at me, which was just like warm orange jello. [SPEAKER_03]: And they didn't use.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, and if they didn't use any of the takes where I'm eating the warm orange gel out, which is upsetting us. [SPEAKER_03]: But it was one of my favorite phases of the drug to shoot because I really did just get to like play around and be jack. [SPEAKER_03]: Which was really fun. [SPEAKER_05]: It was really fun.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_05]: That was tough. [SPEAKER_05]: I remember because I know that like something that's super tropey, I think in body swap humor, which is a trope, weirdly enough like it happens in the genre, it's a genre itself. [SPEAKER_05]: And so much of it seems to be like the entire bit.
[SPEAKER_05]: is about the gender swap as the whole of like and it really wanted to like turn away from doing the normal thing. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm like every time a guy does this scene, this first instinct is to be like, yeah, and I'm like, well, I really don't want that to be this because she's so, this character's characters are already so funny and there's so much history that these characters have together that it will not work unless it comes across as these people very being very, [SPEAKER_05]: a rapport and going away from it being like a usual trope and potentially like just lame and down in sexists and so that was like a really good thing that I think Brian and Nick were keen on being like no the joke here is that they know so much about each other that they have the ability to fully blackmail each other in the situation which I think is very funny.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and instead of like it's like, oh, I don't have braces, it was it was different. [SPEAKER_03]: I was thinking about that too when I was filming it and I like how we kind of took it into a difference. [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, there was like little scenes where it's like, oh, man, I'm going to go like, [SPEAKER_05]: I think the girl now, because girls do that at parties.
[SPEAKER_05]: And like the way it's not needed. [SPEAKER_05]: And also so much, what was so weird is that so many characters like Jack are super sex obsessed in these movies, like their whole boy is like, I gotta get lame, and like that's just a, it's tired, and I don't think it's a concern for him in their current situations.
[SPEAKER_05]: So I think it was just a cool thing to move on from the made of better state. [SPEAKER_02]: Nothing, by the way, that Shawn would have had a deal with as being a butterfly. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it really is 40 butterfly. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's a different screen, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the whole thing plays like a video game, which I love. [SPEAKER_02]: But it seems to me like there's like a million sets and locations in this. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, does this feel like more than a normal movie? [SPEAKER_03]: No, I feel like we were mostly in the same place the whole time because we were on and actually like American high bought out this old middle school and so we were mostly in this middle school and then also at some like other college campuses, but it was really like the set the set deck was just so good that you would think we're in a bunch of different locations, but we were pretty much mostly in one place.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, props to the the crew and everything for making that movie magic happen. [SPEAKER_02]: And uh, and seriously props to all you guys you've made something iconic and cult classic at the same time. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's absolutely lovely. [SPEAKER_02]: Love this movie. [SPEAKER_02]: It was great talking to you all.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, nice talk to you. [SPEAKER_02]: Good to see you again. [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this.
