Shownotes

Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, James Marsden, and creator Jonathan Tropper all join Kyle Meredith to unpack Season 2 of Your Friends And Neighbors, which shifts away from the first season’s heist-of-the-week setup into something darker and more character-driven, with Tropper calling it the show’s The Empire Strikes Back moment as the story pivots toward consequences and the bigger question of why Andrew Cooper keeps doing this at all; Hamm talks about slipping back into Coop’s rhythm and trusting that long-term arc, Peet gets into Mel’s storyline and how the show folds in menopause, identity, and midlife upheaval, while Munn returns as Sam to face the fallout of her choices and Marsden arrives as Owen Ash, a magnetic disruptor who feels somewhere between James Bond and Jay Gatsby, and across the board they dig into the push and pull of characters who are constantly working against themselves, the balance of humor and tension, and the details like Coop’s movie tastes.

Show your support for Kyle Meredith With by making sure to like, review, and subscribe to KMW wherever you get your podcasts, and keep up to date with all our series by following the <a href="consequence.net/category/consequence-podcast-n…; rel="nofollow">Consequence Podcast Network.

Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com… & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.co…;

[SPEAKER_06]: It's been one of my favorite shows that I've been watching. [SPEAKER_06]: over these past couple seasons so we're going to start with with John Hamm legend himself John Hamm famous of Don Draper and Madman on landman baby driver top gun Maverick the town to name a few. [SPEAKER_06]: John and I are going to talk about tapping back into this character coupe Andrew Cooper and leading further into the suburban crime while trying to keep his life from unraveling.
[SPEAKER_06]: so let's get into it right now. [SPEAKER_06]: We're talking about season two of your friends and neighbors on Apple TV. [SPEAKER_06]: It's Kyle Meredith with John Hamm. [SPEAKER_06]: How do you do? [SPEAKER_06]: Good to see you. [SPEAKER_06]: Congratulations. [SPEAKER_06]: I guess not just on a wonderful new season of seeing Coop in the chaos, but here about season three already getting greenlit as well.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, indeed. [SPEAKER_03]: We start in the very near future and looking very forward to that. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, not a lot of time between seasons, like, you know, I know it's different between, you know, shows and all that, but like, how is it, how easy is it for you to dip back in to this character?
[SPEAKER_06]: Like, because I feel like there's this cadence to him. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, for sure. [SPEAKER_03]: I think, well, I think we have a fair amount of time between seasons. [SPEAKER_03]: We wrapped in April and we're going back. [SPEAKER_03]: Are we wrapped in August? [SPEAKER_03]: We're going back in April.
[SPEAKER_03]: We got plenty of time. [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's testament to Jonathan's writing and saying that it's fairly easy for me to get back into coups as you say rhythm and lyricism. [SPEAKER_03]: I think there's something to it and I love the show. [SPEAKER_03]: I love the world. [SPEAKER_03]: I love [SPEAKER_03]: shooting in New York City and around New York.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's really fun and really great. [SPEAKER_03]: I love the fact that my wife gets to work on the show with me and we can bring her on dog to set. [SPEAKER_03]: It's fun. [SPEAKER_03]: We have a tremendous cast. [SPEAKER_03]: We have a pretty compelling story. [SPEAKER_03]: That's growing and expanding.
[SPEAKER_03]: And all of that is really fun. [SPEAKER_03]: I very much enjoy it. [SPEAKER_06]: I like seeing it especially how in this second season, I was talking with Jonathan Bauthas that, you know, it's not just you Robin Houses again, like, like, we get to see where this goes, and he even says he has the in-game in mind if you're lucky enough to get there as what about that about you, like, how invested are you in where this story eventually ends up and does that helper or hinder?
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, first, I used to say this about Don Draper in Matthew Winer. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad I don't have to write it. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I play first violin there conducting the orchestra. [SPEAKER_03]: And that's a very different job and a very much more complicated job. [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm glad that he seems to think that he knows how the story will end because I think it's easier to write.
[SPEAKER_03]: if you have that in mind, Matthew very much had had the end of madmen in mind when he started the show. [SPEAKER_03]: He just didn't know how many seasons he was going to have to get there and it worked out pretty great. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm hoping we get as many seasons as Jonathan wants to tell the complete story and I look forward, like I hope the audience does, to see him the end as well.
[SPEAKER_06]: It's become a point in television over at our house, you know, which is a bit more rare these days, but it is. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a testament to writing. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a testament to the character. [SPEAKER_06]: I love seeing the little Easter eggs like the movies he watches. [SPEAKER_06]: We get to see the warriors there for a second everything.
[SPEAKER_06]: And a bunch of others, like, do you have any say in that at all? [SPEAKER_06]: Do you have any picks? [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I really, you know, [SPEAKER_03]: Right, don't. [SPEAKER_03]: Honestly, I know because we probably have to get them cleared and there's a lot of lawyers involved and rights and everything else that I stay out of it.
[SPEAKER_03]: But I do really love his taste just off the top of my head. [SPEAKER_03]: You mentioned the warriors, but also blood sport damn in there. [SPEAKER_03]: It not only gives you a window and a coupe's creative life, but also kind of reminds you as an audience member to, hey man, go check some of these things out.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're not expensive, and yet they give you a lot of joy and fulfillment. [SPEAKER_06]: There are a lot of thoughtful movies. [SPEAKER_06]: That's what I saw, you know, that's not about blood sport, but yeah, sure. [SPEAKER_06]: And when we've all got our guilty place, I don't know. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there's some, there's some very, there's, you know, he's, he is large.
[SPEAKER_03]: He contains multitudes. [SPEAKER_06]: Sure. [SPEAKER_06]: Uh, speaking of, there's a clip of you doing karaoke to burn in down the house and I'm wondering if there's a full version of that. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure there is. [SPEAKER_03]: There's, I'm sure there's a ton of that that got left on the floor, but yeah, I'm sure that'll be [SPEAKER_06]: I did I want I want to see the full concerts the full John him concert that might exist whatever karaoke night that we'll see yeah uh I still love this show so much and it was it was great getting to talk to you about it uh thank you so much man thanks for watching I appreciate it and we'll be right back right after this [SPEAKER_06]: All right, welcome back.
[SPEAKER_06]: It's Kyle Marith, we're talking to your friends and neighbors, and now we're going to go over to Amanda Pete, who, of course, you know from everything from the whole nine yards, something's got to give a lot like love, saving Silverman, Brock Meyer, and in the second season of your friends and neighbors, she plays Mel, who's the X wife to to coupe.
[SPEAKER_06]: And really gets pushed to the brink in what might be the show's darkest and funny at stretch yet. [SPEAKER_06]: And Amanda's going to talk about how Jonathan Tropper, the creator, shaped this arc around menopause and the reality of middle-aged women facing an empty nest and shifting identity and a whole lot of internal chaos.
[SPEAKER_06]: So let's get into this part two of your friends and neighbors. [SPEAKER_06]: It's Kyle Meredith with Amanda Pete. [SPEAKER_02]: Hello, Kyle. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a pleasure to see you on here and and be one of the people who congratulate you on another fantastic round of your friends and neighbors.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: They have put mail through the emotional ringer this time around. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_06]: Now, I know that's not a question. [SPEAKER_06]: Just I'm glad we agreed. [SPEAKER_02]: He was like, it's kind of like, when he was telling me what Mal's story, I'm, was going to be a Jonathan Trapper said, it's kind of like, have you seen that Michael Douglas movie falling down?
[SPEAKER_06]: This is what you can do this season. [SPEAKER_06]: Congratulations. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not taking it. [SPEAKER_06]: Um, it's, it's, it's interesting though because you're, you get to play her, it seems like it'd be a motion of whiplash. [SPEAKER_06]: I think is what I'm getting to, you know, Jonathan's talked about this being a darker season, like I'd love to know what that meant for you going into this, especially.
[SPEAKER_02]: I just love he wanted to get into the whole menopause thing and I feel it's kind of in the zeitgeist right now and you know I'm obviously I'm going through menopause and so to have to be able to have Jonathan write these scenes for me where I was able to safely act psychotic without really hurting anyone.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was just pretty delicious. [SPEAKER_06]: And channel that a little bit, right? [SPEAKER_06]: Just channel that out. [SPEAKER_02]: Double made all of my real feelings into my TV show. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I really, I thought that that was great that he was looking for ways to have this middle-aged single woman lose her shit.
[SPEAKER_02]: Whose kids are going to pose about to be an empty nest or not an empty nest or she still has her son. [SPEAKER_02]: But I feel like it was, he really, I could tell that he was trying to make it fun and interesting. [SPEAKER_06]: It really isn't the zeitgeist, and I think just having you say that made me, like, right, like, a very menopause at home, I see it in the Simpsons.
[SPEAKER_06]: It's, like, it's really, I don't know, and maybe it wasn't ever, but not like this maybe, because it really does feel like there's something, like, the box has lifted open on that conversation a bit more. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think Naomi Watts helped with, um, kind of, [SPEAKER_02]: um putting in the foreground for for us and making it easier to talk about it, making it less taboo yeah and even just talking about you know I appreciated the chopper you know without having someone you know embark on a soliloquy about it talking about feeling invisible, losing your looks, [SPEAKER_02]: feeling insanely moody losing your children or and even launching them out of the house and then having having, you know, having surrendered your career track to bring them up and then it's it's it's all very relatable.
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, well entertaining the way you all do it too, which is important. [SPEAKER_06]: I know I got a couple of minutes here. [SPEAKER_06]: I wanted to bring up a fantasy life as well because we're seeing you back in the movies. [SPEAKER_06]: I saw this trailer and everything. [SPEAKER_06]: What, I mean, this looks like an incredible little film.
[SPEAKER_06]: I want to say a little bit, you know, it's an indie film. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, it's, uh, it's an indie. [SPEAKER_02]: They're few and far between these days. [SPEAKER_06]: I feel like we're coming into a nice moment with them again. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know, like I'm seeing it more and more.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you're right. [SPEAKER_02]: I think, but just now, it's, yeah, I mean. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, well, I can't wait to look into that one a bit more as well, which will be in theater soon as well. [SPEAKER_06]: In the meantime, congratulations on this second season. [SPEAKER_06]: It's so great to talk to you about it.
[SPEAKER_06]: And looking forward to the third season as well. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much, YouTube. [SPEAKER_06]: And we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_06]: All right, now time for a part three of your friends and neighbors. [SPEAKER_06]: Now we're going to be talking with Olivia Munn and James Marsin.
[SPEAKER_06]: Of course, Olivia from The Daily Show, X-Men, The Newsroom, The Predator and James Marsin, Paradise 27 Dresses, Sonic the Hedgehog, also X-Men, The Notebook and Janet, Anchor Man 2. [SPEAKER_06]: I could go on. [SPEAKER_06]: We're going to get into Olivia returning as this wild card Sam.
[SPEAKER_06]: And James being the newcomer, Owen Ash, shaking up the entire suburban ecosystem. [SPEAKER_06]: In fact, Olivia is going to talk about coming back to this character that she originally planned to play for just one season while James gets to be this season's disrupter chaos agent as we say.
[SPEAKER_06]: So let's get into this part three of your friends and neighbors. [SPEAKER_06]: It's Kyle Meredith with Olivia Munn and James Marston. [SPEAKER_06]: Hi, how are you? [SPEAKER_06]: I'll see. [SPEAKER_06]: They put the Oki's together today. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi. [SPEAKER_06]: Did some research?
[SPEAKER_06]: You know, Wikipedia is about it's that you don't have to look any further than that. [SPEAKER_06]: It's Oklahoma jumps out of the source, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting because you know, back when a Wikipedia first started, like, where anybody could edit it, I, it was like none, there's so many things that weren't true.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then eventually they locked it. [SPEAKER_01]: So only certain, like, only if you have to have a count from a long time, we could update it, but now that some of the fake stuff has been locked in. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not wrong, though, right? [SPEAKER_06]: You're both from Oklahoma. [SPEAKER_06]: It's hard.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you, and the right term is okay, so you're right. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, but I think that wrong. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to talk to you. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't think we have one of those things, but anyway, season two of your friends and neighbors as I waste my minutes here, it's been so fun to see both of you all do these delicious roles that you get to be a part of.
[SPEAKER_06]: Olivia, you got to come back. [SPEAKER_06]: Like, what is it like tapping back in? [SPEAKER_06]: Is it easy to kind of get back in that groove of this character, especially as things have changed? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, I only sign on for one season, which is a big reason why I wanted to do this show besides the fact that I love the character and so character I've never played before in a world I haven't played in.
[SPEAKER_01]: But just with everything in my life, I just was like, I think I can handle one season and it was like after the [SPEAKER_01]: second episode, John and the tropper had me, you know, meet him for lunch and asked me to sign on for another for more seasons. [SPEAKER_01]: And I, I was like, give me to the end of season to kind of make my mind up.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was such a fun experience and working with John Ham was so incredible because you so iconic. [SPEAKER_01]: And I've just [SPEAKER_01]: just been enamored by his work for so long and it's like, yeah, let's do this. [SPEAKER_01]: It's fun. [SPEAKER_01]: How am I going to be able to get back in because of how season one ends?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are you? [SPEAKER_01]: What are you going to do? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, am I am I doing all of my scenes from prison? [SPEAKER_01]: Is this like oranges the new black or like, Birkin is the new black? [SPEAKER_01]: And so I, he gave me a really good, another great storyline for the season and I was like you know what it's so fun and I want to come back in and so it was like it wasn't again another challenge for me it's it's a it's a dynamic I haven't played with a character who comes in.
[SPEAKER_01]: just having done some of the worst things to people that she loves and trying to ask for forgiveness and really not deserving it, but feeling like she does. [SPEAKER_01]: So there's so many different layers and complications that I had to tap into. [SPEAKER_01]: What was so fun to do? [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's what I like about just about every character in here is the layers that get the [SPEAKER_06]: go against each other and and and and James with uh with oh and Ash I mean I I spend so much of the time I think we all spend so much of the time wondering if this guy's James Bonner J. Gatsby like how how did you want us to see him yeah and wow sure those yeah nice combination of those two is nice um I think what what drew me to the character was his
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, his enthusiasm for experiencing life and for kind of raising, like turning up the volume, the guy likes to turn up the volume and every part of his life and, uh, he loves a challenge. [SPEAKER_04]: And I liked the idea of him stepping into this world where it's all very, [SPEAKER_04]: of delicate and you've got to watch your back and there's judgment and people, you know, how you present yourself and who's got the best car and the watch is and everything in the bags and he kind of comes in and just, you know, I don't know, just disrupts the whole thing a bit.
[SPEAKER_04]: But I think in his mind, he does it in a really pleasant way. [SPEAKER_04]: He's just like, hey, I don't know who you guys are, but we should party. [SPEAKER_04]: We should party and this is my daughter and yeah, I'm too old to be partying, but let's let's have a good time. [SPEAKER_04]: He's very good at what he does.
[SPEAKER_04]: He's very maybe it albeit a bit cryptic about what he does. [SPEAKER_04]: But I think he's good at bringing out people's [SPEAKER_01]: touches everyone off guard and at the same time they're they're like it's magnetic they're like how can you be so alive you know how can you be so free and I think in general I think that's why audiences I think will really enjoy this character that comes in this world with people are.
[SPEAKER_01]: holding on to their wealth and social status so hard and and in keeping people have who they don't want in and then this guy comes in and he's like I belong everywhere and I think it's really interesting to watch people squirm. [SPEAKER_04]: He's also has no filter either just whatever he thinks is out of his mouth and he backs it and it's kind of fun as an actor to play that as well.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's not where everybody has to watch what they say and what they do, it kind of comes into the world. [SPEAKER_04]: Why? [SPEAKER_04]: And what's her deal? [SPEAKER_04]: Why is she not allowed into the main group and this sort of attractive to him and what's the story there and maybe there's some darkness there and maybe that's exciting.
[SPEAKER_06]: absolute chaos agent. [SPEAKER_06]: That's that's it. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: I love seeing both of you all do seriously. [SPEAKER_06]: And I can't wait to see where this story continues to go. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you both so much for allowing me the time today.
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you so much. [SPEAKER_06]: Thanks a lot. [SPEAKER_06]: All right. [SPEAKER_06]: We got one more in here. [SPEAKER_06]: And this one goes to the creator and showrunner Jonathan Tropper. [SPEAKER_06]: who you'll hear he calls this season the the Empire Strikes back he that's the way he likes right second season got to be darker than the first one so uh we're gonna talk about flipping the dynamic by introducing that new disruptor and forcing uh coupe uh to deal with the consequences of his actions uh rather than just pulling off new highs it's not a Scooby-Doo season it's not the highs in episode uh or anything like that so let's get into a part four your friends and neighbors on Apple TV this is Kyle Meredith with Jonathan Tropper.
[SPEAKER_06]: Hi Kyle Haydon, it's a pleasure to talk to you and be one of the people that can congratulate you on another outstanding season of this show, thanks. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, so this is a season two. [SPEAKER_06]: If I remember right, this is what you said would be your Empire Strikes Back, right?
[SPEAKER_06]: Yep. [SPEAKER_06]: What was the idea? [SPEAKER_07]: The idea was to just bring in a disruptor and see someone who was the disruptor and we didn't want him to be the disruptor again. [SPEAKER_07]: So in season two, he gets disrupted along with most of the neighborhood by this new character, Owen Ash.
[SPEAKER_06]: Is that like going for the darker second season, like there's a reason for that, right? [SPEAKER_06]: Like why do you like that template? [SPEAKER_07]: Well, I think it's almost impossible to avoid what we, you know, [SPEAKER_07]: You know, we're dealing with with people who are grappling with life choices and middle-aged, both both the physical and the psychic aches and pains of getting older and also relationship problems and in Coupes case financial problems.
[SPEAKER_07]: And so, you know, you have to make a second season that doesn't feel like the first season. [SPEAKER_07]: The first season, you know, had some of that, but there was a lightness to the first season because we were still having fun with the premise. [SPEAKER_07]: I think [SPEAKER_07]: just keep making it a fun quirky premise.
[SPEAKER_07]: Like we had to now go deeper and going deeper means getting into the motivations and the liabilities of this. [SPEAKER_07]: And that just becomes darker because you're dealing with the long dark tea time of the soul, right? [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, he's having an existential crisis. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that was noticeable because you didn't go for, like it's not, Roba House every episode or even like that.
[SPEAKER_06]: Like that sort of becomes a background thing this time around. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, I just think people would get bored of that. [SPEAKER_07]: I think, you know, we still will always, there's still a piece of it in the show, but like if we were doing that too often, I mean, that was the discovery.
[SPEAKER_07]: That's a season one thing. [SPEAKER_07]: It was discovery. [SPEAKER_07]: Now it's a fact of his life. [SPEAKER_07]: And it's much more interesting to watch him dealing with the ramifications of everything then continuing to implausely get into houses. [SPEAKER_06]: How far out do you sort of start planning what those, you know, if you get lucky and you get to keep going and everything as we all hope you do.
[SPEAKER_06]: You know, we're short, we start shooting the third season in about a month. [SPEAKER_06]: So I heard that congratulations on that, too. [SPEAKER_06]: Like how far do you keep that in the back of your mind? [SPEAKER_06]: Like what do we, what what happens to this guy? [SPEAKER_06]: Like what's his end point?
[SPEAKER_07]: I know at the end point is. [SPEAKER_07]: And depending on you know, and we will make the decision. [SPEAKER_07]: I think I believe we'll be fortunate enough to be able to make the decision. [SPEAKER_07]: when the show ends before we start that season's writers room. [SPEAKER_07]: So the idea would be to just continue to up the ante up the stakes further in parallel him and his family and just reach a point where he has to finally come face to face with the thing in him that's making him do this, right?
[SPEAKER_07]: Because that's the thing he's not dealing with yet. [SPEAKER_07]: He's done with everything else except why the hell am I doing this? [SPEAKER_07]: Right? [SPEAKER_07]: And I think that's the thing he ultimately has to confront. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's not exactly a ripply type of a thing, but yeah, like what's the thing in me, I'm trying to fix or satisfy him when will I have accomplished that because this is not tenable right right well, I quickly also compliments the soundtrack is fantastic yes and the movies that he watches I'll let us be my last question to is there significant to the movies that we see coupe watching or is that's what's available.
[SPEAKER_07]: Um, no, there is, I mean, to some extent, it's not like, you know, and in the, I think it's the first episode he's watching the warriors, right? [SPEAKER_07]: And that's, sometimes the significance is, it's a movie I love, you know, and sometimes there is a significant when he's watching certain, um, [SPEAKER_07]: You know, film noir movies, you know, we consider our show suburban noir and and you know his voice over is kind of influenced by the detective voice over the Raymond Chandler type voice over.
[SPEAKER_07]: So you know, sometimes there is thematic relevance, other times to me, it's just I was. [SPEAKER_07]: I was a novelist living among finance people and I was a movie buff when they were all sports buffs, right? [SPEAKER_07]: And I couldn't get into conversations about I wasn't in a fantasy football league and I didn't understand how the draft worked and you know that left me out of a lot of conversations, right?
[SPEAKER_07]: Because I was I was a book and movie guy and so I just gave that to coupe because it was me and I just I you know it would be so easy to have coupe watching basketball or football and talking to the guys about that. [SPEAKER_07]: But I wanted us to humanize him in a different way and to [SPEAKER_07]: this other more aspirational side of him, even if it's just watching classic movies.
[SPEAKER_06]: I love eyeing those as they're happening. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: Um, seriously, I'm gradually trying to get those movies a bit, but congrats on this season. [SPEAKER_06]: I really, I can't wait to see where this one goes and Jonathan's been great talking to you. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you, too.
