[SPEAKER_02]: that's me Kyle man it's speaking of Mike Flanagan and the carry cast today i'm catching up with my buddy Kate Seagull she wasn't part of the original cast interviews because her her character is bit of a it's bit of a mystery uh... so uh... Kate of course uh... beyond carry uh... she played the Ukraine in the haunting of Hillhouse Aaron in the midnight mass uh... camill in the fall of the house of usher she also uh... start in encode hush [SPEAKER_02]: directed her own segment of VHS and VHS beyond and step behind the camera for episode three of Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Carrie, where she also plays Adelaide and that's what we got to talk about [SPEAKER_02]: all of this.
[SPEAKER_02]: She knew the trick to making Carrie's first house party in episode 3 of Carrie, terrifying. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, it was letting her have a great time. [SPEAKER_02]: That's what made it scary. [SPEAKER_02]: Letting Carrie have a good time. [SPEAKER_02]: Just left you uneasy the entire time.
[SPEAKER_02]: so we got to talk all about directing episode three of the adaptation. [SPEAKER_02]: She connects her own experiences with bullying and teenage freedom to a night inspired by movies like Can Hardly Wait and ten things I hate about you. [SPEAKER_02]: Then we get to properly nerdouts about the needle drops.
[SPEAKER_02]: She searched through, as she says, roughly 400 songs for one scene. [SPEAKER_02]: And we talk about making the car float in that episode with a decidedly unglamorous jack. [SPEAKER_02]: Kate's also going to share where her feature directorial debut methods stands. [SPEAKER_02]: Her plans for feminist filmmaking through legitimate pictures and a dream.
[SPEAKER_02]: of casting Olivia Rodrigo, somebody get this message to Olivia. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk all about Episode 3 of Carrie on Prime Video. [SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Kate Seagull. [SPEAKER_00]: So excited. [SPEAKER_02]: Look who's already here. [SPEAKER_00]: I know. [SPEAKER_00]: We're so good at this.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's going. [SPEAKER_00]: It's really, really good. [SPEAKER_00]: How are you? [SPEAKER_02]: It's an easy day, Fridays or the easy days? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what you're doing Fridays. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you know what? [SPEAKER_02]: I have a very exciting eye doctor appointment. [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to be dilated here in a few hours.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's so exciting. [SPEAKER_00]: Congratulations. [SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_00]: To finally get there after all this time. [SPEAKER_00]: Finally get there. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, no, and and outside of that, I'm obsessively checking my son's GPS who's on a solo road trip across the country.
[SPEAKER_02]: Just headed west. [SPEAKER_02]: That's it. [SPEAKER_00]: First of all, what is he listening to? [SPEAKER_02]: So he graduated high school and college wasn't his band right now. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: And so he's been doing he's been he's been a PA.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's been doing PA work. [SPEAKER_00]: He's done a cool. [SPEAKER_02]: He's turning it all that stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: So he'd done a few shoots and his next one is coming up in November and out of nowhere. [SPEAKER_02]: He's just like I got a couple weeks off. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to drive west.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, okay, I love it. [SPEAKER_02]: And at this exact same time, I was listening to Ari, new adventures in high five, which is there. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to travel West Album. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, leave departure. [SPEAKER_02]: How the West was one and where I got as low desert all these songs.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, so right before I left, I've got like three copies of. [SPEAKER_02]: And I said, I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to give this to you. [SPEAKER_00]: to see this as a thing and then you need to have like an episode that is just you and him talking about that because road trip music is so specific and it's like it's so important.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm taking some of my son, my stepson who goes back and forth is coming. [SPEAKER_00]: in a couple weeks and the easiest way for him to get back because he flies by himself he's 16 is to fly out of Seattle and we're in Vancouver and so I drive him from Vancouver to Seattle which is three hours and we spend a lot of time negotiating what we're going to listen to like a combination of podcasts and you know and music and his music and my music and things like that and what we've landed on a lot of soundtracks are really good like to when [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to listen to, just a soundtrack, but I'm excited for that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I collect the soundtracks, that's still one of my big nerd things right there. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, the first thing he already knows, he's going to get the text, and I text him Simon and Garfunkel's America, and he goes already listen to it. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I can't, like, a lot of Simon and Garfunkel has great musicals if he listens to musicals.
[SPEAKER_00]: I find like musical theater is really good in the car over a long term because like it's so longing. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Fleetwood Mac, really good in a car. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I feel like Megan the stallion also is really good in the car because like things you can scream and yell and listen to, it's so good.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if Megan will land on us, but I have no clue. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like he's out there. [SPEAKER_02]: He's just, he's out there doing it. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, all right, man. [SPEAKER_02]: go west young man, go west, you know, it's cetera, that whole thing. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, it's it's definitely kept me.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, where is he now? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's terrifying. [SPEAKER_00]: It's terrible. [SPEAKER_00]: They shouldn't be able to drive it all. [SPEAKER_00]: Apparently now there are rocket cars. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you see this? [SPEAKER_00]: I woke up and I freaked out. [SPEAKER_00]: and apparently Elon Musk just made a car that has a rocket engine, and there's a video.
[SPEAKER_00]: I still don't know if it's AI, but they say it's not AI, where the car goes up a ramp, and then just when it's about to fall, like rocket boosters come, flip the car, and lower it. [SPEAKER_00]: So like, hey, screw you, cancer research, screw you, world hunger. [SPEAKER_00]: We've made a rocket car.
[SPEAKER_02]: But we can do that, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: That's where the money goes. [SPEAKER_00]: That's where it goes. [SPEAKER_00]: We need more billionaires anyway. [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, we can go down a deep hole with that one right there. [SPEAKER_02]: That's the, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's talk about you. [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like it's been longer than usual that we've been able to catch up, but I was so happy that we connected because it was so carry, you know, it was out in the world. [SPEAKER_02]: And I was watching it and I got the request for the cast interviews.
[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh man, Kate's name's not on here. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't do the upfront press because my character is such a question mark, so I really couldn't answer any questions about it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I have no idea why people aren't more interested in episodic director. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, that was, that's where it landed for me because once I watched it, I told I immediately understood why you were in those panels.
[SPEAKER_02]: But seeing your name directed by on episode three, and it was that moment, it's like, oh, I want to talk about this. [SPEAKER_02]: want, you know, and luckily, but that's that. [SPEAKER_02]: So let's let's do the whole thing right here. [SPEAKER_02]: So why episode three, how did that land for you?
[SPEAKER_02]: Was that, was, did you, were you able to look at the episodes and go, that's mine? [SPEAKER_02]: I see something in it. [SPEAKER_02]: Was it assigned to you? [SPEAKER_02]: How does that work? [SPEAKER_00]: So, as you know, I have a bit of a different in with the showrunner. [SPEAKER_00]: And so, we both having not had episodic experience unlike the other female directors who stepped on like Kira and Herome and Axel had all done a ton of episodic and Amazon had approved me for an episode based on Stowei, which was a segment I didn't VHS beyond.
[SPEAKER_00]: and a meeting. [SPEAKER_00]: And I had some idea of the structure of the season and I said, I think I want the house party. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I have a very strong sense memory of those house parties and what it feels like to be free for a night, but also like what's going to happen? [SPEAKER_00]: There's a really beautiful thing about 103, which is that because everybody knows that it's carry.
[SPEAKER_00]: everybody is expecting her to get hurt at this party. [SPEAKER_00]: It's has a low level of terror built in and the better I make the party for Kerry, the more anxiety inducing it is for people and to me that echoes the high school experience so much because parties were such a high stakes thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of what allows it to be this magical moment a moment so full of joy she can lift an entire car is because of the stakes and the joy and all of that. [SPEAKER_00]: And also I feel a real kinship to Chris Harkinson. [SPEAKER_00]: I really love Chris and I was bullied really badly in high school, but I also dished it out as bad as I got it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And those two things were connected, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like the behavior that I was getting [SPEAKER_00]: influence the behavior I was giving and I really wanted to show Chris and how not that she is also being bullied but also that kids in this world are in danger at all times it doesn't matter if you're like the popular girl or you know all the things that Chris is she's also a child and danger.
[SPEAKER_02]: Alright, we're gonna take a quick break, but before we do, if you haven't already, please do consider hitting that subscribe button, even just following along helps so much and we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back, it's Kyle and Meredith with Kate Seagull. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, it really is like all of that what you're saying because when you get in there, she could just be evil, Chris.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And, and I had that question for Alice and two, it's like just her point of view like is this person inherently evil and it's like, no, it's it's all, you know, all of her surroundings and how it made up to this point and that you do get three dimensional and on the carry side that we do just get to see her happy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, and also this is the first time we experience these kids without adults around and anyone who's been a kid knows how different it is when there are adults in the room and when there are not and I think it was so important for the development of all these characters like when you have Sue and Tommy having an unsatisfying first time sexually when you have Tina getting a little bit of her like sassy revenge like kids will do they feel very empowered by the fact that [SPEAKER_00]: that they're alone in this house and they say it in the episode like for who owns this house tonight we do and they're playing it being adults and they're playing all these things and then you have this beautiful moment outside where you have Billy and Chris falling in love upstairs and Carrie falling in love with the world downstairs and it's like almost like a bizarre room you and Juliet and I just everything about that episode spoke to me and I was just like Mike I I want this one also it had all the needle drops.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like, music, it's the first thing I did was put together the playlist and listen to it obsessively. [SPEAKER_00]: On my murder board in the back of my office, I can give you a picture. [SPEAKER_00]: You have all the photo inspiration and then you have all the different scenes beat it out and I had a post it of the song for almost every scene that either inspired me or I wanted to put in.
[SPEAKER_02]: So how many of those songs actually made it in, then? [SPEAKER_00]: A lot. [SPEAKER_00]: Just seeing Wagman, yeah, just seeing Wagman who is our music supervisor, I sent her my playlist very early on, and I was like, how many of these can you clear? [SPEAKER_00]: And all the big ones I got.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know about the other directors. [SPEAKER_00]: I know Mike did the music for a lot of the other season, but 103 is all my choices. [SPEAKER_02]: Wow. [SPEAKER_02]: The songs fit so perfectly. [SPEAKER_02]: And it is, you know, when we don't know, it's that question, right? [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, it's like, are these the songs that we could get?
[SPEAKER_02]: And they worked like to know that they were so intentional. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I also wanted them to feel more literal than I would normally choose because like really reflect what's happening because I remember this time in my life as a 16, 17, 18-year-old discovering music and I really responded to music that directly described what I was going through.
[SPEAKER_00]: and that was the stuff that I loved, literal music made me feel seen. [SPEAKER_00]: And to me that's a sign of youth is like loving because before that you're listening, like you're listening to your parents music, you're listening to top 40, you're listening, but when you start to choose songs, like when I discovered a honest more set, or when I discovered like Bush, [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, oh my god, it is like, it could have been easier by the way, it could have and it just like that to me felt so youthful the literal nature of the music because kids are thinking and feeling for the first time and it's really I think that's very powerful.
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's. [SPEAKER_02]: why the episode works so well is you know we get these great performances on screen but behind it this is you tapping into something like I read about the thing where you look through old pictures of yours right or something like that like like so much of this episode from what it sounds like really is you finding a way back into those moments from yourself.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know another way to direct on to be hyper personal, because I approach it the same way approach acting, which is you start with the materials you have, and then you try to expand at every level. [SPEAKER_00]: And so what I could start with was all of my feelings about these house parties when I was a kid.
[SPEAKER_00]: in how much I loved them and how the day leading up to them was also part of the thing and how the hangover the next day was part of the thing and I looked I talked to some of my best girlfriends from high school like I had gone I went to public school and I was bullied so badly I had to switch schools to a private school for the second half of my experience.
[SPEAKER_00]: and that second half really saved my life. [SPEAKER_00]: So a bit like Carrie, I dropped into a high school. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I just am not a Carrie, but like I dropped in and I remember getting invited to my first party at this new school and it being good and making friends and like still having drama, but like feeling [SPEAKER_00]: like the world was full of possibility.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I knew from talking to other people that we all had that one party in high school. [SPEAKER_00]: Even if it wasn't like the one in the episode and there wasn't drinking, but like, or that one night in your friends basement where all of a sudden the world just kind of opened up a bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you could kind of see, you could smell what it might be like to be an adult. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was magical and terrifying, and like you're so drunk on the power of being a human being. [SPEAKER_00]: And I wanted that nostalgia for everyone, but I really wanted that for Kerry. [SPEAKER_00]: I wanted her freedom, I wanted her to taste it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted her to have 15 minutes where she was like, [SPEAKER_00]: Holy shit, this could be my life. [SPEAKER_00]: I could be free. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's so important for what happens to her later that she's been able to taste freedom with friendship. [SPEAKER_02]: just, and again, going back to that happiness and seeing her in there because it's, you know, weaponized against her too, and even thinking about, you know, not getting ahead of everything else, but the idea of a three season arc, I think is Mike has pitched out there if, you know, if that gets to happen, but it's like that's that's that's that's the part I start looking at like the happiness as a weapon, my reference point was monsters ink when I wrote that down, you know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, nobody's true, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Because Carrie can only experience feminine violence and rage to the depth that she can experience feminine joy and excitement. [SPEAKER_00]: You simply can't, you must have opposing opposite forces. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it becomes impossible to understand her dancing through the streets to shy girl if she didn't dance like that at the party.
[SPEAKER_00]: For me, like when I was making that episode, that's what I thought. [SPEAKER_00]: Because Carrie is, when she's experiencing freedom, real freedom for the first time, she's at that house party dancing with her friends in the music and so again when she has that like break, to me she goes back to dancing because it was so powerful for her at her first party.
[SPEAKER_02]: music dance at the moment counts in these shows. [SPEAKER_02]: You guys are incredible at that. [SPEAKER_02]: I've said that before in the past. [SPEAKER_02]: And just, you know, because of our nostalgia in our age, if I read it right and everything, just knowing that a little bit of the inspiration also came from can hardly wait until things I had about years.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's iconic movies and also the scene in which really styles dancing on the table. [SPEAKER_00]: Who doesn't remember, Julia sells dancing at the table? [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and then all of those movies, 16 candles, just like iconic house parties. [SPEAKER_00]: But can't really rate, it's a great, great signpost.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just fucking love that movie. [SPEAKER_00]: I listen to that soundtrack all the time. [SPEAKER_00]: I miss this. [SPEAKER_02]: I miss this. [SPEAKER_02]: And Matthew sweet song on that? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, all of them. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I want is when we post this, I'm going to post the playlist for 103 and the Spotify playlist, just make a public, because when I watch something I liked, I wanted the soundtrack.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's part of the joy of it being a little literal because then you follow it and you can feel the episode in your head, your time traveling back to when you watched it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like music can do that. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, I know vinyl's been a thing now for, you know, decade and a half, but the fact that CDs have now out sold vinyl for the first time in years this year, I'm saying it's, you know, you got to press Prime on this one, like we need a carry soundtrack, you know, it would be a great idea.
[SPEAKER_00]: I also, as we're doing this, I want to go back to the real, like the iPod shuffle. [SPEAKER_00]: I need an old school iPod shuffle, that is just a music thing, please. [SPEAKER_02]: The artist, Mr. Gander, I don't know if you're familiar with him. [SPEAKER_02]: He's great. [SPEAKER_02]: In fact, I'd set Matthew sweet a minute ago.
[SPEAKER_02]: He reminds me of the new Matthew sweet in a lot of ways. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like really solid like pop rock. [SPEAKER_02]: I guess he just, I haven't seen a yet, but he just did an apple commercial and apparently it's like the ones from the 2000s like they're sort of bringing back that nestet.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, right. [SPEAKER_00]: I love it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we'll get there. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and on the episode, [SPEAKER_02]: Again, you were talking about how the juxtaposition of Chris and Carrie and going back and forth and the falling in love with Billy and falling in love with the world.
[SPEAKER_02]: That car scene though is so masterfully done. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, thank you. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really fun because in the script of 103, it's a tiny little paragraph that says, carry, and for a moment, the car lifts and lowers, and Tommy doesn't even notice. [SPEAKER_00]: And then like three scenes later, Sue and Chris are driving home together.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when I read it, and I knew that Amazon loved that moment, might put a flag in that moment, and it was like, they love the car float moments. [SPEAKER_00]: So we need to make a meal of this, I want to pay attention. [SPEAKER_00]: And I agree with them, like the car flow moment is super important.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I had said to Mike early on, I think these two scenes actually want to be together. [SPEAKER_00]: I think these scenes, because I remember it just felt... [SPEAKER_00]: It felt so female to me, you know, this like sense of girls that protect each other but also destroy each other and like you could be either girl at a party when you show up or I guess a human truly boy girl whatever you show up to a house party you don't know which way you're going home.
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you going to be a carrier Chris a lot could happen and so. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I, that was our first camera test. [SPEAKER_00]: I got on the, the stages. [SPEAKER_00]: And I wanted to make sure it didn't feel too TV. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I wanted them off center a little bit. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, um, we worked on getting, because it's all done on stages.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all green screen. [SPEAKER_00]: Getting the right, um, background that would reflect on the car correctly and not be too distracting. [SPEAKER_00]: And then I spent, got so much of my prep time was how to float that car. [SPEAKER_00]: and I did so much pre-vis which like I went out and shot versions of it on my iPhone just like with a car and a parking lot and my assistant sitting in the window and then it lifts and then we talked about like doing a ramp and doing it practically and then we talked not like really like painting a ramp green so we could paint out the thing and honestly at the end of the day we were on the process stage and we used a jack.
[SPEAKER_00]: and then we also had people in the back bump it down like it was extremely low-fi at the end. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the best. [SPEAKER_02]: That's the movie magic, you know, screw the AI and even CGI and all that stuff like like we get the real thing like it makes a difference. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was so fun to feel that because like there's so much there.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, in the beginning, I wanted to make sure that carries car really had a certain like weight to it so that when it lifts you feel the release of gravity, which is exactly you can tie that directly into VHS beyond because I had to do gravity and floating. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, like, the bump had to be believable that Tommy would just be like, what?
[SPEAKER_00]: As opposed to being like, did that car just fucking float? [SPEAKER_00]: And then, like, the nauseating, like, more of Chris's G wagon, just like the way you could tell, it was not going well. [SPEAKER_00]: And then making sure in the edit, which is Mike, Mike, me and Mike, in the editing room, decided to splice it back and forth the way it is, timed out to that music.
[SPEAKER_00]: which took forever to find. [SPEAKER_00]: War for you is, I mean, I must have listened to 400 songs. [SPEAKER_00]: Elba was up there for a while. [SPEAKER_00]: Song for Zula was up there for a while. [SPEAKER_00]: I pulled up my list so I could look at some of the other ones. [SPEAKER_00]: Blood of Eden, but the Regina Spectre cover, Lippy Kids.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, elbow, um, some archaic fire was up there, Greg Graham eyes a cause of Gregory Allen eyes a call of course, but like it was that was so hard to find. [SPEAKER_02]: Every single one of these artists be like, oh, I almost got it. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I got you guys. [SPEAKER_00]: Don't worry.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have a whole separate folder of songs for the future that I listen to for other things. [SPEAKER_00]: I know there's no, there's no, there's no place. [SPEAKER_00]: But the second I heard that, I was just like, what an incredible song for this moment. [SPEAKER_02]: All right, we're going to take a quick break, but before we do, if you haven't already, please do consider hitting that subscribe button, even just following along helps so much.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Meredith with Kate Seagull to go digging like that. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's, you know, outside of the Lana song, I know there's a cover in there that I'm forgetting right now, but like most of the songs are new to me.
[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of the artists were new to me, you know, so it [SPEAKER_02]: Like to find that stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Going through playlists, like what are you doing? [SPEAKER_02]: How are you finding them? [SPEAKER_00]: So a handful of things we have adjusting fragment hugely influential, truly would just send me playlist on playlist.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the original thought for when Carrie entered the party was I wanted Miss New booty, because that I wanted was like a really intense, weird disorienting, like rapper R&B's feel that like music Carrie would have never heard before. [SPEAKER_00]: and then through just searching, I landed on post that, which was by, you know, legally 47.
[SPEAKER_00]: And, um, which is not licky Lee 40, they're like two, not the same, but the same. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then I talked to kids about what they were listening to. [SPEAKER_00]: And then another thing I would do was I would take I would go on TikTok and I would see a song that was like, you know, like, clipped to be a trending edit.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would put that in either Spotify or Apple Music and have them create a station so that I could hear songs like it and then I would just, I would be driving like I just drive with lots of music, it's my favorite. [SPEAKER_00]: And I would wait and then it would go into my maybe playlist and then I had all the maybe playlists and then I would listen to that over and over again.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the ones I wanted to go back to, those are the ones that would make it to the front runner playlist. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the front runner playlist goes to Justin and Mike, and then we're editing the show we put it there. [SPEAKER_00]: Although there were a handful that I knew we're going to be there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd sweeten lemonade for Chris. [SPEAKER_00]: I knew that was going to be there. [SPEAKER_00]: What else? [SPEAKER_00]: And then war for you. [SPEAKER_00]: Villains aren't born there made. [SPEAKER_00]: Like those were signposts. [SPEAKER_00]: Hello, there. [SPEAKER_00]: Right there. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I had to fight for that one too. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, believe you me, this is this song. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Conan Gray, it just everybody loves Conan Gray. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, it's perfect for Kerry to feel happy. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm one else who I'm looking at it right now.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's funny. [SPEAKER_02]: We've talked a lot of times, but I don't think you've ever been cooler than hearing this process right now. [SPEAKER_00]: This is so... Well, for, you know, music, that's why I love talking to you. [SPEAKER_00]: I like I'll jump on at any time, because music for me is step one.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, do you write to it? [SPEAKER_02]: Do you find that you ever do that? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, right now, I'm about, like, I'm at the precipice of going into my feature prep debut, and I have... For method, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for method.
[SPEAKER_00]: Method has a playlist, and what I do right now is, so I live in, like, [SPEAKER_00]: outside of Vancouver and the woods. [SPEAKER_00]: And I have to drive back and forth a lot to take the kids places. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I will just listen to that playlist and fantasize and like watch the movie in my head.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because obviously the script's written, but before I make the shot list, I'm just listening to these songs. [SPEAKER_00]: And I intend to hand them to my production designers and my cast and be like, this is the vibe of this scene. [SPEAKER_00]: Whatever that means to you, fine. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's such a great way to [SPEAKER_00]: And I expect the same in return, you know?
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the true of the carry cast. [SPEAKER_00]: They all sent me music to play at the party, because I could play whatever I want on the day to make them dance and whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: But they would send me music, I send them music. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a really easy way to communicate tone and vibe.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a huge part of my process. [SPEAKER_00]: And I gravitate towards actors who also use music in their process. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as you said, Gateway, it just makes it so much easier. [SPEAKER_02]: I had for years sort of had the seed of a screenplay in my head, and I could just never, it's not my world anyway.
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't need to do it. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, no one was pressuring me. [SPEAKER_02]: But one day I figured out to your point, I was like, oh, you know what? [SPEAKER_02]: I had this other thing with this U2 album called Pop, which most people knock, and I love it. [SPEAKER_02]: I can love it so much.
[SPEAKER_02]: as, you know, press this for the entire story. [SPEAKER_00]: 100%. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And suddenly it opened up the entire thing and I was like, oh, and there it is, and it's done, you know, and it's like, oh, and so now that was a thought. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, any time I want to do those, you just start with an album.
[SPEAKER_02]: You start with the album. [SPEAKER_02]: You build the story around the record. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, music is meant to unlock things, you know, one of my dream goals is to cast Olivia Rodrigo in something because I just think she's such a good actress like inside and the way she presents it outside and I just love the way she exists and I remember thinking the [SPEAKER_00]: What'd it be great?
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and she's so perfect like she's my favorite of that, you know, of that style and and stature right now just because I mean she's so tapped in to and and talks about all the time, you know what she was raised on with appearance and and we've run radio head and the cure and all of that stuff and and it's like man what she's the the handmaid's tail son she just put out.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is so into it. [SPEAKER_00]: I remember the same girlfriends that I talked to about episode 3, when sour came out. [SPEAKER_00]: One of my friends Mara sent it to me and she's like, you have to listen to this. [SPEAKER_00]: This is what high school felt like. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was crazy to see that 20 plus years later, it was, it was, well, then 25, 20.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was just right there. [SPEAKER_00]: It's fucking, it's always brutal out there. [SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean? [SPEAKER_02]: Uh-huh. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: No, to get her. [SPEAKER_02]: Someone like her to do it, like you said, like the whole, like Queen to Highlander, you know, how they did, that's the one that comes to mind.
[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Just do it to just do it. [SPEAKER_00]: A series of covers, even. [SPEAKER_02]: Would be really cool. [SPEAKER_02]: We're putting it out there. [SPEAKER_02]: We're just putting it out there. [SPEAKER_00]: Olivia! [SPEAKER_00]: Somebody can win somebody like Tag, do the thing that people do, tell her that I like her.
[SPEAKER_02]: Tag it. [SPEAKER_02]: Tag it. [SPEAKER_02]: So, so, I'm sure you've talked about this before, but I do want to know, like, what [SPEAKER_02]: to hearing okay I think we've got a story and carry we're going to take this iconic movie and we're going to we're going to develop it like what's your first reaction when that comes up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I grew up, as a baby artist, I did mostly theater. [SPEAKER_00]: And in theater, you do the same plays over and over again. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not like, oh, we've done Romeo and Juliet. [SPEAKER_00]: There's been four versions. [SPEAKER_00]: Please don't do Romeo and Juliet again.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's always like, this play is a prism for which the storyteller tells the story about young love. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I didn't have the same gut reaction that it seems like the internet did, which was like, why are you making carry? [SPEAKER_00]: What's wrong with you? [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, man, we've been doing arms in the man for hundreds of years.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, this isn't a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So I was really excited because also knowing how my deconstructs and reconstructs adaptations, I was excited to see [SPEAKER_00]: this story of like female rage and bullying and joy and sadness be told through that lens. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I just, as a fan, was excited to see where it was going to go.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it is. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so good about, you know, again, the female rage and, and how, you know, you as the narrator take us through all of these moments of history of these women who are just chastise is not strong enough a word. [SPEAKER_02]: But I can't find it right now. [SPEAKER_02]: But [SPEAKER_00]: murdered.
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's just that's as soon as I realize that's what you all were doing. [SPEAKER_02]: Because we didn't get it right at the beginning of episode one. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that starts coming in on the second episode, right? [SPEAKER_02]: So it really is by the episode three, you're like, oh, start putting this stuff together.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, figuring out that new doorway, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I, one of the themes that it brings in is this idea that Carrie alone is capable of getting a violent revenge on a handful of people on a town, right? [SPEAKER_00]: In the book. [SPEAKER_00]: But if you let Carrie live, it's not revenge.
[SPEAKER_00]: It becomes vengeance. [SPEAKER_00]: like she's going to get to explore what the world has done to women. [SPEAKER_00]: And so if you can just like wait a minute, you're going to get the revenge fantasy of your dreams as opposed to like, you know, and it's like the difference between getting to break Chris's nose and like getting to take down the patriarchy.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just wait in the tall grass for a second, everyone. [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get your revenge fantasy. [SPEAKER_00]: So I loved that for Carrie. [SPEAKER_00]: Was that this Carrie also didn't go through what book Carrie went through, which was 10 years of abuse before she broke down.
[SPEAKER_00]: This Carrie only had a few months of what happened before the prom. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it would be psychotic. [SPEAKER_00]: for this carry to have killed that many people, you know what I mean? [SPEAKER_00]: It would have been so out of character, but people, you know, purists, purists like what they like, I don't know what to say about this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the discourse of it is interesting because I think interesting points are being made, but they're so overshadowed by people screaming their feelings that there are no conversation anymore, and so I've gone off topic. [SPEAKER_02]: people are talking about it. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think people are so many people are excited.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of those things, even the people who are watching it seems like they just can't stop talking about it. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's like, I love that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're going to be like, you're going to be like, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And they can't. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's what's fun, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it isn't. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I guess even now, facts don't matter. [SPEAKER_00]: But [SPEAKER_00]: But art is subjective. [SPEAKER_00]: It is completely valid for you to say, I don't like the show, that's fine, like that's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: It is not completely valid for you to say, I hope Mike Flanagan dies.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are very different things, people, or like Mike Flanagan should never make TV again, or why does he cast his wife so much? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, because I'm super cute, leave me alone. [SPEAKER_00]: So what I like the one 1% of haters and the 99% of fans and we always take that 1% were like mother fucker abs there's just no helping human beings I you could eat an entire pie and if there's a hair in it you hate that pie forever.
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, it's most delicious thing you've ever had. [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: I like it. [SPEAKER_00]: That part of it, I like it now that I'm a little older and I live in the woods because you can kind of see it for what it is, which is a high school party and some people are having a great time and some people are having a terrible time and it's just so fun to watch people respond to things.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, especially in hearing that. [SPEAKER_02]: And hearing where people's imagination are going. [SPEAKER_02]: Because what was I looking at all the speculation that you're the your character Adelaide is the Linchpin to this larger Stephen King universe. [SPEAKER_02]: Like there's a lot put on you right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I like the one where they think because Chris died in the car that she becomes Christine in the haunted car. [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't seen that, yeah, that's a great one, that's a good one. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, look at you guys, aren't you cute and smart? [SPEAKER_00]: Also, there's another one that I really like, which is that a handful of characters are wearing the same style of necklace and they're like, are they all connected and I want to be like listen friends in Vancouver.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a lot of options and props only had so many jewelry people who are willing to give us jewelry, but also maybe maybe we're all part of a secret necklace society. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's some point that's what people start taking that and they start coming over the ideas and then you all look at those ideas and you go It's not a bad idea.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not great. [SPEAKER_00]: It's an oraborus That's great. [SPEAKER_02]: So really quickly Method you're developing that right now that's still in development. [SPEAKER_02]: Is that right? [SPEAKER_02]: Is that what you're saying? [SPEAKER_00]: It is at the last stage right now Okay, so we're late waiting for our last final guesses [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man, so I loved, of course, you know, when you started doing the directing, we know, we talked with VHS and everything and seeing this carry.
[SPEAKER_02]: But this is like, this is a bigger beast, right? [SPEAKER_02]: This is like, this is the film. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this is an original feature film idea that I both wrote on and I'm going to direct and created. [SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: Have you got anything? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Same thing to do. [SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll be right there. [SPEAKER_00]: Call me. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: We haven't cast it. [SPEAKER_00]: I've cast it in my head a handful of times, but nothing real. [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a crazy thing to be embarking on. [SPEAKER_02]: So I know you don't want to get too deep into it. [SPEAKER_02]: But why this story? [SPEAKER_02]: If there's a way to do that without getting too deep into it. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this story goes to the heart of what I do in who I am and it's so fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's sort of an insane romp in that sense. [SPEAKER_00]: Like it's just crazy, but it comes from the guts of me. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and I, I, I will just say again, seeing how you've done this already with with with this episode and carry an and tapping into the guts of you, like that's already a pretty high bar.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the, I don't know how else to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't, maybe I'm maybe it's just I don't know what else to do except be entirely open. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how else to do it. [SPEAKER_02]: That's a good filmmaking. [SPEAKER_02]: It's good arts.
[SPEAKER_02]: It makes good arts and legitimate pictures. [SPEAKER_02]: That's that's taking off rights. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I started a production company entirely focused on female identifying experiences. [SPEAKER_00]: The whole concept of it is weird feminist shit. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's weird, so it's kind of out there and a little bit experimental.
[SPEAKER_00]: Can you hear my dog going crazy? [SPEAKER_02]: I can't. [SPEAKER_02]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: great. [SPEAKER_00]: It is weird so it's like, I like an experimental film, I like something that's a little bit off the norm, feminist that deals with female female identifying storytellers or stories, and shit because it's four adults.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like you can curse in these movies. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm always looking for materials we're in development with a handful of things. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you either find a graphic artist or you find a story on Reddit, like no sleep and you just get in there with those female storytellers and try to develop something cool.
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't wait to see what else comes from that, and I know we're going to see an exorcist martyrs and the creep tapes, and you're always, I was talking with the John Gallagher Jr. [SPEAKER_02]: The other day, it's a week sort of struck up a friendship recently, and I love him. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I'm excited to see what comes out of all of that, his new EP, by the way, is one of my favorites of this year.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll download it right now. [SPEAKER_02]: Just an incredible singer, some writer type of thing. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, he is. [SPEAKER_02]: Like in that whole, Paul Westerberg, Josh Rouse, type of way. [SPEAKER_02]: Kate, I love talking to you. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so great to catch up. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, always a pleasure.
