[SPEAKER_02]: uh... so she's gonna tell us she got the call she packed her bags in two days and then suddenly she was at cowboy camp learning to rob just for this show uh... we're gonna talk about how that whirlwind turned into one of the most immersive roles in her career she'll tell us about building a wild infre character as uh... as she's uh... described uh... who evolves in ways fans probably won't see coming she goes total with a net bending in the show that's so much fun to watch [SPEAKER_02]: And then our conversation is going to completely flip to the movie Halloween Store.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is the slasher that Natalie is starring in, producing, casting, and editing even herself and she'll call it a love letter to an old school horror. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, and, and so that's coming out later this year, it co-star Simon Rex and Anthony Michael Hall among others. [SPEAKER_02]: So she's got a lot going on and we're going to get into all of it as we talk Halloween store and Dutton Ranch is Kyle Meredith with Natalie Allen Lend.
[SPEAKER_03]: Hi, how are you? [SPEAKER_03]: Look at your cool background. [SPEAKER_03]: That's awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: Doing all the heavy lifting for me. [SPEAKER_02]: That's what it does. [SPEAKER_03]: I love it. [SPEAKER_03]: I love it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's so cool. [SPEAKER_03]: Nice to meet you. [SPEAKER_02]: You too, how are you?
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm doing good. [SPEAKER_04]: How are you doing? [SPEAKER_02]: It's a very relaxed day. [SPEAKER_02]: I hope you're having them about the same. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I mean, if I get to do anything out of my house, then it's very relaxed. [SPEAKER_04]: I almost didn't, I was like, okay, you might be able to see my jeans.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I almost like didn't even wear actual pants, but it's like semi relaxed. [SPEAKER_02]: The lyrics were both in the jeans today. [SPEAKER_02]: It works. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: We're comfortable jeans, so. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I what what what a ton you have going on suddenly.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk about a Halloween story here in just a few moments, but but you're in this this new yellowstone spin off with doesn't range which is so fun to watch. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm about three and a half episodes into it with the screeners they allowed so. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, you've seen more than I have because I haven't seen any of it.
[SPEAKER_04]: So you can tell me what happens. [SPEAKER_03]: Is that right? [SPEAKER_04]: Like, no, I haven't seen any of it. [SPEAKER_04]: I just keep on hearing that people seem like one in tune. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, oh, what episode has that happened? [SPEAKER_04]: And again, I'm very excited to see it as well.
[SPEAKER_04]: So you know more than I do. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, this is a big deal though. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this, you know, there's, there's a lot in the Taylor shared in world, right, but, but this is like the direct spin off of his biggest so far with Yellowstone, how, how did you get like roped into this world?
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go ahead and use the pun there. [SPEAKER_02]: Why not? [SPEAKER_04]: I like roped in. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, it was a project that was sent to me. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a casting process. [SPEAKER_04]: I obviously with the IP like this and how massive the original was. [SPEAKER_04]: It was something that was very tight lips.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I got very minimal information about it at the beginning. [SPEAKER_04]: I just saw my character and I fell in love with her immediately just from the small tidbits that I was getting. [SPEAKER_04]: and from there we flew to Texas and I did a screen test and flying home from the screen test.
[SPEAKER_04]: I got a call saying that I got it and they said you have two days pack your stuff in your moving to Texas for seven months. [SPEAKER_04]: So it was such a whirlwind and [SPEAKER_04]: the best whirlwind that I could ever be and I was so grateful and I feel like it took me until genuinely pulling up that cowboy camp and getting on a horse that I was, oh shit, it's happening.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like this is actually, this is actually real. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm in this now and then and then it hit me like a freight train. [SPEAKER_04]: Like I was, it was all uphill from there. [SPEAKER_02]: See, you had to learn how to cowboy. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how to cowboy. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, for all of Taylor's shows, I think that one of the things that's most impressive is nothing is fake.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's no fake cowboys on the show. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we're fake cowboys, but at least know what we're doing and other shows that I've done, there's always stunt where her souls are training and cowboy camp is no joke. [SPEAKER_04]: They're not just trying to have us look good for the camera.
[SPEAKER_04]: They want us to feel actually comfortable on the horses. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. [SPEAKER_04]: It was the first time that I'm that my co-stars and we got to meet each other on these horses and on these horseback rides through the beautiful countryside of Texas.
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and we were learning real skills and some of them were harder to pick up on and some of them hit really easily and now I have a huge passion for horseback riding and it's hard. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, for not the not the same thing, but I'm based in Louisville and this is Derby week right now So it's it's all about the horses in my world, so it's kind of funny.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is the conversation anyway So that's so far you going [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, it's it's because I've gone so many times like I watch it I want to watch it from like a neighborhood Friends house or a bar or something like that, you know It's totally got it. [SPEAKER_04]: I just came back from stage coach.
[SPEAKER_04]: We did an activation for the show at stage coach And my feet are so blistered I bet In crowds, so I understand chilling on the couch and watching that that's the time [SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's always interesting because there's that old adage when you're an actor, you know, if someone says, can you write a horse?
[SPEAKER_02]: You say yes, regardless of if you can or not. [SPEAKER_02]: So what was your experience level going into cowboy camp? [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I had written horses before. [SPEAKER_04]: Like I feel, I felt very comfortable on horse going into it. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, there were specific things that they taught us like cutting and roping, and obviously that was not, that was not a skill that I had.
[SPEAKER_04]: But it was something that I actually picked up on really fast. [SPEAKER_04]: And it was, it was so funny because I was the only woman at cowboy camp. [SPEAKER_04]: So it felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of big brothers. [SPEAKER_04]: And it was really cute because anytime, like everybody would go and do something, [SPEAKER_04]: She didn't such a good job, and then at the beginning it was like, oh, I feel so supportive.
[SPEAKER_04]: This is super cute and then it kept on going. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, oh, I'm starting to get really embarrassed now. [SPEAKER_04]: I, but it was, it was so positive. [SPEAKER_04]: But I mean, they did ask me going on to the show. [SPEAKER_04]: Do you have horseback riding experience?
[SPEAKER_04]: And I didn't lie. [SPEAKER_04]: I just have never trained doing it. [SPEAKER_04]: I've never done it professionally. [SPEAKER_04]: But I love horses and I love being outdoor. [SPEAKER_04]: And I love anything physical. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm a very active person. [SPEAKER_04]: So it was something that was scary at first because I didn't want to walk in and just go oh my god I'm terrible at this but I picked it up pretty easily and it was a lot of fun.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's great was was there the the thing that was the hardest to learn [SPEAKER_04]: roping for me, roping for me, I finally caught up with it, but it's a lot harder than you would, it's like this twist of the risk that you really have to overextend your risk. [SPEAKER_04]: And it took me a second, but then once you get at the first time, then you can feel it.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's almost like riding a bite. [SPEAKER_04]: You kind of don't forget, but I would probably do it outside right now and embarrass myself, [SPEAKER_04]: are in this universe are just so incredible. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, they are real cowboys and [SPEAKER_04]: they know what they're doing, and they're just so, they can explain it in such a way that you can pick up on anything, but no, I would say, roping for sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I never tried that in my life. [SPEAKER_02]: I couldn't even, you know, it's fun. [SPEAKER_04]: It's really fun. [SPEAKER_04]: You can make it a competition in Markman Chaka, who's on the show. [SPEAKER_04]: He, I mean, his characters a lot like they're cowboy, like they had me do cowboy camp, but there are people that were actually supposed to be like, real cowboys on the show, like the ranchans.
[SPEAKER_04]: and he got one of the roping dummies and was doing it in the hotel parking lot, practicing, practicing, practicing, practicing. [SPEAKER_04]: And he was impressive. [SPEAKER_04]: Him and J.R. were like really impressive. [SPEAKER_04]: Me and J. I struggled with the roping aspect of it and it's funny because we're supposed to be like father and daughter in the show.
[SPEAKER_04]: So the Jackson's didn't have very good like roping natural skills. [SPEAKER_04]: So we caught on. [SPEAKER_04]: We caught on. [SPEAKER_02]: Does you care what we see rope in the show? [SPEAKER_02]: So far I haven't [SPEAKER_02]: Hmm, I, like it's just that you just need to know it, even though you might not use it, is it that kind of a thing?
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, there are definitely characters that started out really needing to know, and I think that they wanted us all to have some of my experience with it. [SPEAKER_04]: Just, I mean, my character is raised on this ranch and has born and raised in Texas, so I think that it's a natural thing that should come to her.
[SPEAKER_04]: And I want, I think that they wanted us to be able to have those experiences and be naturally gifted on horses. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to say why they're not later in the season if it's something that you'll see my character do. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think that you see it in the first two episodes.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm definitely not on a horse. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just dating a cowboy. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm it's like the saying save a horse or had a cowboy. [SPEAKER_04]: That's Oriya for the first two episodes. [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back. [SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Natalie Allen Lend.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's hear about her, too, because I think the press release uses the word wild and free. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, how would you define her? [SPEAKER_02]: Because I will say, especially seeing this couple together. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, the first thing is like, oh, it's baby Beth and Rip. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's sort of reminds us of that.
[SPEAKER_02]: And that way is, is that kind of how it was pitched? [SPEAKER_04]: I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that there are definitely parallels. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that that's like safe to say that there are definitely parallels and it's so crazy with just the reaction to even just a single photo coming out all of the speculations that are being made.
[SPEAKER_04]: That's why I wanted to try to not say too much about that relationship, but, um, [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, my character in general, she is definitely wild and free. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that she's the type of person that can walk into any room and say exactly what she wants. [SPEAKER_04]: And she's powerful and she knows her worth and she doesn't take anything from anyone and I really love that about her.
[SPEAKER_04]: She is not afraid of anything. [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I think that that you'll see more of that come out and I think that when you first meet her, she's somebody that obviously is a powerful kind of crazy, not crazy, but [SPEAKER_04]: kind of just like all over the place that first but it all comes from a very genuine heartfelt place and there's a lot of different levels to her that you'll continuously see throughout the season.
[SPEAKER_02]: Especially coming from the family that she comes from which also has you going toe to toe with a net binning. [SPEAKER_02]: What's that like? [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I don't know how to put into words what an experience it was working with the net, especially our two characters on the show were so close.
[SPEAKER_04]: And I mean, for the first two episodes, you can see that we don't have the easiest relationship. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that one thing that I really appreciate about the Yellowstone University is one of the reasons that people love it so much is that the family dynamics are messy. [SPEAKER_04]: And I don't think that there's such a thing as a perfect family.
[SPEAKER_04]: Our family takes that to a higher extent. [SPEAKER_04]: Not perfect is under play of what our family dynamics are. [SPEAKER_04]: But I mean, she just, she is a net-bending. [SPEAKER_04]: There's no other way to put it. [SPEAKER_04]: She's so talented. [SPEAKER_04]: She's one of the kindest people that I've ever worked with.
[SPEAKER_04]: And she has had so much to do with my character development as well. [SPEAKER_04]: and being on set with her and seeing how art dynamics were and just being able to play with her and create these back stories because we are coming into this new universe. [SPEAKER_04]: as characters that have not been seen before, but there's so much development that happens off-screen to be able to step in and be these characters and have these crazy things that have happened that viewers at this point don't know, but you still have to have those in the back of your head.
[SPEAKER_04]: You have to have the development there and the backing of what our stories were. [SPEAKER_04]: So being able to do that with her and Jai and Juan Pablo and Finn, like, it was just such an incredible experience. [SPEAKER_04]: There's no other way to put it. [SPEAKER_02]: And, and when you can do that right because not everybody does it, you know, you're talking about, you know, that giving us the backstory without ever saying the backstory, like it's interesting how how quickly I do catch up with these characters even though I've never seen them before.
[SPEAKER_02]: And when you're coming into a, like, especially a Taylor sharing show, a type of show, like how much is on the page and how much do you bring in because there is [SPEAKER_02]: What, I don't know if it's a mood, you know, but there's something, I guess I'm asking your expectation of what your character is going in versus where it became.
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, there were, for me, as a fan of the show, I am so bad at watching TV. [SPEAKER_04]: I cannot start a show that the episodes are not, because it drives me absolutely crazy. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm so OCD and that's terrible and having to wait every week for a new episode to air on TV was nothing compared with having to wait for new scripts to come in.
[SPEAKER_04]: And they gave us kind of like a rough, [SPEAKER_04]: rough kind of idea of where our characters are going to go. [SPEAKER_04]: And the development was so important for these characters specifically. [SPEAKER_04]: Like I said, for the original Yellowstone, the thing that I find that people are most drawn to, which I'm not even sure if they realize is how real the characters are.
[SPEAKER_04]: and how genuine and just raw, all of the characters of a show feel, so the development throughout this season specifically for my character without giving too much away, she ends up in such a different place. [SPEAKER_04]: So I had to kind of have ideas of when to start making transitions and to when to start forming her into something new.
[SPEAKER_04]: but more specific aspects of it. [SPEAKER_04]: I wasn't positive how they were going to, I knew the entire idea where I was going to end, but definitely not. [SPEAKER_04]: I did had no idea what was going to happen in the middle and I was flipping pages going, oh my god! [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god!
[SPEAKER_04]: So if that was me just seeing it on the page, I'm so excited to see fans reactions because I don't think that people are going to [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what a great thing to have as a job though, you know, to not have this two-dimensional thing over an entire season, you know, because there's one thing to have a character arc over an entire series, but to really get to play that out, you know, just over this episode.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what a gift. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, that's like going back to the original Yellowstone, though. [SPEAKER_04]: You see these characters start in one place and then there's so action pack that they all come from this place of like realism, which is I think is really hard to do on TV.
[SPEAKER_04]: To be able to have such action pack shows, but then to have it be so relatable, I think it's a really tricky, tricky wire to cross. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't even think I'm saying that right, but you had the idea. [SPEAKER_04]: But that is definitely one of the biggest aspects of our show is just the humanization of these characters, even though we're in this bigger universe, there is something that still feels really real about it, and you're able to have it be extremely action-packed, which is hard to find.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a hard thing to do both. [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right up to this. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back. [SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Natalie Allen [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's my baby. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: So this is a horror film that you're not only starring in, but you're producing, and this is the first time that you've taken on this, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: So tell me about that. [SPEAKER_04]: So during the strike, I mean, I had a horror movie come out during the strike. [SPEAKER_04]: And it was just kind of that thing where I, my dad's a producer, my mom's an actress, and my two younger sisters are actresses. [SPEAKER_04]: And for me, I, [SPEAKER_04]: have such a passion for filmmaking and character development and it goes so much further than just developing characters that are given to me.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of my favorite things to do our character development for characters that are handed to me but I was kind of in the back of my head like I feel like I can do this and I had kind of had that thought one night and then the next morning I woke up and just started figuring it out. [SPEAKER_04]: Our director Shane Dax Taylor, he's incredible and he's [SPEAKER_04]: Um, and everybody in the film are either some of my best friends or people that are friends of friends.
[SPEAKER_04]: I was kind of like the casting director. [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and we have amazing producers. [SPEAKER_04]: We have Steven Schneider, who's again, one of my really good friends who didn't and cityists and paranormal activity. [SPEAKER_04]: And then we have Keenan Thompson, who's like a horror court, a comedy genius.
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, but our cast is just incredible. [SPEAKER_04]: We have Anthony Michael Hall and Simon Rex and, [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I can go on and give you the entire cast, but just being able to see a project through, I'm such a horror fan, and this is kind of my love letter to horror. [SPEAKER_04]: There's so many different references to different horror films throughout the entire... Love that.
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's fun. [SPEAKER_04]: It doesn't take itself too seriously. [SPEAKER_04]: I miss kind of like the old school slasher films from like the late 90s or early 2000s, even like the 80s. [SPEAKER_04]: And we wanted to do something that was just really fun to watch. [SPEAKER_04]: And after I'm done with interviews today, I'm literally going back and editing for a couple hours.
[SPEAKER_02]: So you're doing like [SPEAKER_02]: all of it from the ground up like this is you. [SPEAKER_02]: This is your project right here. [SPEAKER_04]: We're in the process right now of going through for our composer. [SPEAKER_04]: So I've been working on composing with our director and visual effects.
[SPEAKER_04]: We have an ADR session tomorrow. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's like I try to I'm trying to juggle both at the same time and I'm so grateful to have two balls to juggle. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's like sad and weird, but you understand what I was saying. [SPEAKER_02]: You're polquilt right there.
[SPEAKER_02]: I can do nothing with it. [SPEAKER_04]: You don't go out to have two balls to juggle. [SPEAKER_02]: No, I had your sister Olivia on here last year with the Tony Colette show that she did. [SPEAKER_03]: I did her very well. [SPEAKER_02]: with that. [SPEAKER_03]: I know her really well. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I was just saying like, and I remember us talking about like her love of horn hearing your love of horns. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, this really sounds like a family thing. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: It's finally like it landing sounds right. [SPEAKER_04]: We are we are the biggest horror fans of all time when I was literally six months old my mom took me through my first haunted house and it was a corn maze and she had me and it was a guy with a chainsaw chasing her going, I have a [SPEAKER_04]: baby by herself.
[SPEAKER_04]: So our love of course stands from this crazy like just backing of my mom but also my godfather Thomas Decker who's been a ton of horse stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: He when I was little he used to come over with Michael Myers masks on and he was just he's like my one of my favorite people all time and he's one of the leads of Halloween stores.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I like that was such a full circle moment [SPEAKER_04]: him and my mom are where my four love stems from and obviously my sisters as well as you have as you've told me that we've heard from that as well. [SPEAKER_02]: So what's the log line? [SPEAKER_02]: It was synopsis on this one.
[SPEAKER_04]: So it is it takes place on a Halloween in a Halloween store and it's a bunch of kids that get trapped in a Halloween store on Halloween and there is a crazy psychopath on the loose. [SPEAKER_04]: It's very fun like very basic, very fun and just gonna be cool to watch. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I love the names too, because I mean, Anthony Michael Hall, and he's been on the show before, but the way he has, you know, put his career in the past couple of days.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, put him in a role, like, well, I don't know what he's doing here, but just putting him in a role like this and his face just so much of the acting, like the eyes of his, like, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: How fun to for this, like I was so involved with the editing process and I was able to edit, we did the final walk to cut without visual effects and coloring and everything before I went to Texas.
[SPEAKER_04]: We had the walk cut and then when I got back we started picking up again, but being able to go through and watch some of his takes and see. [SPEAKER_04]: just the different varieties that he gives as well. [SPEAKER_04]: He's just such a great guy on set as well. [SPEAKER_04]: We had so much fun with him and I'm a huge horror fan.
[SPEAKER_04]: So his background in horror, especially I was just so so excited. [SPEAKER_04]: And then we have Simon to who is from Simon Rex era. [SPEAKER_02]: He's everyone. [SPEAKER_04]: We love Simon, so much. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm so happy that he wanted to do this film and it's kind of crazy too because my co-star on the movie, her name is Sidney Park and she's in the new Scary Movie so I was like okay and I was like a Scary Movie kind of family and Halloween store as well but it's so fun to see all the actors like the actors that are younger on the movie just watching their careers of developing right now too.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just such a blessing, such a blessing. [SPEAKER_04]: I have [SPEAKER_02]: So you're still working on it, obviously. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you have the hopeful projection of when we're going to be able to see it? [SPEAKER_04]: We are going to have a trailer and posters dropping in May sometime kind of similar time on the release of Dutton Ranch, but in terms of the movie actually coming out, we don't have a specific date yet, but I'm thinking this year, but I'm going to say anything specific.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, I know how that works and everything. [SPEAKER_02]: This is just the loose like, well, we'd like to get it out. [SPEAKER_03]: I like to get it out. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: So what does this mean for you in the pivot though? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it is like is this going to be part of the career at this point so are you looking to move forward like this?
[SPEAKER_04]: So I actually, in the process, I have a couple other projects that I'm producing at the same time right now that we have not filmed yet, but our end development and I couldn't be happier. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, for me, in general, I want to pursue both at the same time. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm one of the leads of how I'm the lead of Halloween store, but moving forward, there are movies that I want to produce that I'm not in at all.
[SPEAKER_04]: But no, I mean, I had such a positive experience with all of us in being able to develop something from the ground up. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't want it to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but this one specifically, I'm just so happy that it was such a fun project to be my first and it gave me the itch for it and now I just can't stop scratching at it.
