[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, he's going to talk about how a fake TV band on the runner rounds the show now streaming on Prime Video turned into a very real, very busy rock band. [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, he talks about answering a mysterious Instagram casting call, Tita Outer Banks.
[SPEAKER_04]: They have the same creator show runners. [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, the long secret stretch of years where the group was quietly writing, finding their sound and cutting an EP with Jerry Harrison of talking heads before anyone even knew they existed. [SPEAKER_04]: Zinday also gets in to some proggy drum flexing, like in the song Funny How The Universe works, what it's like building the season one soundtrack in a sort of songwriting bootcamp and how the crew splits writing between songs for the characters and songs for the actual band.
[SPEAKER_04]: He also takes this into the latest single, chasing the good times, [SPEAKER_04]: Born in a Nashville session with Brad Schultz of KCL Fint. [SPEAKER_04]: It's been on my show several times in the past We'll talk about the surreal rush of watching sold out dates roll in and why TV renewal or nods The run-around are now a full-on touring band with plenty more music on the way all of that and more We're talking about the run-around's on prime video.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's Kyle Meredith with Zinday Murdoch [SPEAKER_04]: I have a live. [SPEAKER_04]: It's so nice to meet you and me, especially, yeah, especially during all of this, I mean, [SPEAKER_04]: Crazy, I'm guessing, is the word for this year? [SPEAKER_04]: It was like that. [SPEAKER_04]: So there's a new single called Chasing The Good Times.
[SPEAKER_04]: And we're going to get to that in a minute. [SPEAKER_04]: But let's do the backstory just a little bit. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Your musician who ended up an actor and a show called The Runaround, which is also the name of the band. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sure. [SPEAKER_04]: Which could have been a fake band, but it's also a real band.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, what's the short story? [SPEAKER_04]: How did you end up here? [SPEAKER_01]: I started Instagram story about five years ago, five and a half now. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was July 2020. [SPEAKER_01]: Our director, Jonas, has a TV show named Outer Banks that he's been very successful with over the last several years.
[SPEAKER_01]: And in the early days of that show, after their first season was a big little hit on Netflix, he had his cast go out and put out like a bit of an APB for young musicians. [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of making it look as if it was looking for extras for Outer Banks or some kind of [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of purposefully marketed that way is to not allow we've now the cameras moving Kind of purposely marketed that way so that we don't get like I guess the Disney kids as he described it to me And so yeah, I mean I auditioned for it with the hope of signing fresh band members I was 18 at the time and had just graduated [SPEAKER_01]: And it was in a couple of bands that just weren't super awesome, super good and I really wanted to play drums professionally and so kind of like that's cool and high school if like you're not like the greatest band around you're just having fun, but when you graduate you're like, oh, the they've got to get better.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I left I left the bands I was in and started looking for a fresh one and my only. [SPEAKER_01]: My only hope when doing the auditioning process was just maybe make a few hundred bucks and then like me, kids on the other side, that would be really good at their instrument, considering they would have made it through the auditioning process.
[SPEAKER_01]: If I would be lucky enough to make it through. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, I auditioned with that in mind. [SPEAKER_01]: I made it all the way through and when I got to the very end, I got on a zoom. [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of like this one with Jonas and, uh, and he was like, hey, TV show.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I know that sounds crazy, and I was like, oh, wow, I did, I thought this was for your TV show. [SPEAKER_02]: He was like, no, and it's my TV show, but I've never won. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: He was like, you want to be in it? [SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, you're going to teach me an act.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, yep. [SPEAKER_04]: Then I was like, okay, that's the best bait and switch ever. [SPEAKER_04]: yeah literally did literally. [SPEAKER_04]: So so you all start with I mean really smart the way they've built this up because because again you mentioned Disney kids and you can go all the way back to a show like the monkeys or something like that and and to give you guys an actual base before the show so like there's an EP that happens first right yeah and if I read right like Jerry Harrison [SPEAKER_04]: who you guys were.
[SPEAKER_04]: He was true. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It was an awesome experience. [SPEAKER_01]: Haven't seen that guy in a couple years now, but it was so fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, is that just like through those, through these channels and connections that they're like, oh, and by the way, you're going to be working with the drummer from the talking heads.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It was really crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: The first few years of the project was really us just, I mean, no one knew who we were. [SPEAKER_01]: We didn't have a bad name until several years in. [SPEAKER_01]: We were just kind of the idea was just for us to get to know each other, considering we live in five different parts of the country.
[SPEAKER_01]: The idea was just to get to know each other, write some songs. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe develop a sound if that's even possible yet at that point. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Jerry was just a connection of one of the executive producers on the TV show. [SPEAKER_01]: They knew each other from back in college and so yeah, he figured it would be a good idea to just make a good little pairing there.
[SPEAKER_01]: We were lucky enough to meet him all the way back in 2021 and do an interview with him. [SPEAKER_01]: And then yeah, he just he took a liking to us. [SPEAKER_01]: Not sure why, but we loved him so we were like, all right, well, this is really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, he did that that AP with us [SPEAKER_01]: uh we uh filmed it out at Will's College in in California, USC and it was a hell of an experience so one of my favorite shows today.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah crazy tired those years uh just very like underground kind of like this big secret project that you can't talk about you know you're telling people even though you shouldn't and it's like are you sure that's really happening or are you just lying to my face right now [SPEAKER_02]: like no, I promise it's coming and then like some years goes by and it still hasn't happened and it looks bad and yeah, great time and we'll be right back right after this [SPEAKER_04]: Welcome back.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's Kyle Meredith was Zinday Murdock to play this long game like that like we're gonna create this band We're gonna let you guys spend the time, you know, figuring each other out like really becoming a band But we ever even bring this up that it's happening like like I can't name another time that that's happened exactly like that, you know It is super super odd.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they did a very good job of like [SPEAKER_01]: Like kind of like you said and building it up like taking it step by step in a sense that like nothing was thrown at us because it's like such like an odd thing to kind of jump into nothing was thrown at us like right away if you will [SPEAKER_01]: First they just got us used to like being in front of the big old cameras and not having to really do anything other than just like play our instruments And then it's like working that into the outer bank setting.
[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't appearance on outer banks in season three So now it's like you can buy in the cameras with like the environment, but still not about you. [SPEAKER_01]: You can just sit back and watch And just kind of be a part of it And learn and then that upgrades to doing the pilot and then it's like it's one episode a couple weeks of like [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now go home and like process it and then it's more shooting it's you know, I mean it's step by step so that it's all like building And it's it's digestible.
[SPEAKER_04]: How do you all find your sound then like where does that start to come from because you have the songs not not the original songs like like The sound track by the way to the show like within the first five minutes I mean it's not even like [SPEAKER_04]: scratch in the surface, you hear spoon Dr. Dog, Led Zeppelin Green Day, Jack White.
[SPEAKER_04]: The band is, you know, at their party playing Franz Ferdinand. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: So there's sort of the indie rock idea there. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, we're given that template, like, were you all sort of nudged in a direction? [SPEAKER_04]: Or so, how did you eventually find your sound?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, there is we're definitely all coming from from a lot of separate backgrounds. [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's kind of got there. [SPEAKER_01]: They're niche, if you will or like what they grew up on, but I think the general feeling, because they did take a second to like, what is this going to be when we first kind of met, we all brought in songs.
[SPEAKER_01]: that we felt like might represent the band in the future and the general feeling amongst the five of us was Indy Rock. [SPEAKER_01]: Would not that any of us were like... [SPEAKER_01]: exclusively playing in the rock. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just that that's what felt like the strongest kind of like middle ground.
[SPEAKER_01]: But then again, like kind of a variant, our own variants of in the rock, just considering that like, I don't know, it's a tough thing to explain. [SPEAKER_01]: It just took us, it just took us, [SPEAKER_01]: quite a quite a minute to kind of like put a pin down on it and that was a frustrating process because you would end up with this batch of songs that were just so diverse and so broad and you're kind of like, you know, this one's really cool but it sounds nothing like this one which is also really cool and [SPEAKER_01]: I think we were given a lot of liberty with the music.
[SPEAKER_01]: We weren't really pushed in any direction by the TV show. [SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of just like, they wanted it to feel as authentic as possible. [SPEAKER_01]: And so then it's like, well, let's just let the kids do their thing and see what they come out with. [SPEAKER_01]: Which is, I mean, wow, what an honor to be like, you know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_04]: We just spent a lot of money in the back end of the TV show. [SPEAKER_04]: And you just be like, you guys do your thing. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's an honor and we're all 18, 19 at the time and so you know they had heard stuff that we had written individually and just kind of put their faith in us.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was it was a lot of pressure but at the same time it was just like really fun because we understood that we were in the driver seat And you kind of do what we want with it as long as it is good music. [SPEAKER_01]: And so we took our time to figure it out and we used all those trips that they were sending us on to just try and try and find something.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say we found their sound like [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe halfway through like 2022, but this is like two and a half years in, it really started to come together. [SPEAKER_01]: We had a good batch of songs, including senior year, that kind of really put like a pin down as to like what the band would sound like, going forward.
[SPEAKER_04]: You mentioned like some of those diverse sounds, and you still do get a bit of that, like funny how the universe works. [SPEAKER_04]: By the way, man, you're playing in that song, [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, thank you, Sarah. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, that's some crazy drumming. [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate it, man.
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate it. [SPEAKER_04]: OK. That's the scientific way of saying exactly what you're doing. [SPEAKER_04]: That's the trick. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, sure. [SPEAKER_04]: But like that song, like even because of what you're doing, almost even takes that into like prog territory, a little bit, right?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like where did that come from? [SPEAKER_04]: How did that happen? [SPEAKER_01]: Um, to be honest, like, well, we'll, we'll brought in fun out of the universe where it's so he's he's very much primarily to, uh, to praise for that song. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, he brought the entire thing in pretty much just as an acoustic kind of vibe, but upbeat.
[SPEAKER_01]: He brought it to me first. [SPEAKER_01]: This is around the time that we were filming the pilot. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so we're all living in this Airbnb together in Wilmington and he brought the song to me and I thought it was awesome. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I started just developing the drum part.
[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted the drum part to feel intricate and I guess like syncopated with a lot of the rhythms that he was playing on the guitar since it is such like a rhythmic kind of song. [SPEAKER_01]: And then when we got it to the rest of the guys in LA a few weeks later, we were in rehearsal space.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we had the idea of just putting that like kind of that big ending on it. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a video of me running around like a frantic little chicken in the middle of the room. [SPEAKER_01]: Just trying to explain it to everybody. [SPEAKER_01]: What I think means that. [SPEAKER_01]: But luckily everybody thought that was a fun idea to kind of go into like the big half time rock ending.
[SPEAKER_01]: It made this song kind of long but it's fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that was my whole process behind it was like, let's, let's have a live moment. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's have like a fun instrument moment. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, it's sing along. [SPEAKER_01]: You can never go around with a, with a nice sing along.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, yeah, it came together quick. [SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, Will is really the, he's the mastermind behind that song, which is why he sings the entire thing. [SPEAKER_02]: That's why he gets to sing. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's my song. [SPEAKER_02]: Or like, you know what, you got that.
[SPEAKER_02]: You sound great. [SPEAKER_04]: and we'll be right back right after this. [SPEAKER_04]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Meredith was Zinday Murdock. [SPEAKER_04]: Now I see the guitar like you play more than drums I'm guessing. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I can dabble, it's nothing crazy though. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a drummer for sure.
[SPEAKER_04]: So that's what I mean, that's what I was going to ask. [SPEAKER_04]: So are you also writing songs and bringing them out? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm, I'm trying my best man, but I've definitely, I have to give the majority of the son writing, bringing in song credit to Will, Axel and Jesse, they have done the majority of that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've gotten some stuff in here and there, but yeah, my expertise is definitely in just playing the drums. [SPEAKER_04]: I try and help out where I can, and I'm definitely involved in the process, but I mean, you can hear your mark all over every song, like it's such a distinct style that you have.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very kind of you. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, it's here about the new song then. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: He's in the good time. [SPEAKER_04]: So this is the first song after the show. [SPEAKER_04]: This is the first, I guess you would say, studio song that isn't part of the show, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sure. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: This is the we are a real band moments. [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: If you will. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: It's our real band moment. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: So that's, I mean, and Chris, I'm, you know, saying that in just in joke and everything, but [SPEAKER_04]: knowing that all this was leading up to the show.
[SPEAKER_04]: At what point did you all say or is this still part of that grand universe where you're saying okay but once that's over we're still going to put out music. [SPEAKER_01]: mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that was always kind of the ideas of what everybody wanted from the jump this for you to be able to come and see the real band and real life and not only that, but here music from the real band, you know, it's such a weird concept, but we really want [SPEAKER_01]: a real group of kids separate from the characters that you can come and enjoy personally in your real life.
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, there was never a time when we weren't going to release music outside of the TV show or go into it. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just kind of like a matter of figuring out what songs we're going to end up being a part of. [SPEAKER_01]: the real catalog in which we're going to be a part of the TV show as it turns out by the time we got down to filming we just needed so many songs that we like all of the good ones basically ended up making it into the TV show.
[SPEAKER_01]: There wasn't a whole lot of material left after we got done kind of flushing out the scripts [SPEAKER_01]: not anything that we felt super sharp about anyways and so there was there was a need for fresh music if we wanted to release in in real life which was still still so everybody's kind of hope and dream after releasing the show and so knowing that we did a writing trip in May basically the whole month and we just kind of bounced around the way we used to except this time we did it together and so it was nice like road trip moment but yeah we just kind of [SPEAKER_01]: This one we were able to write with a man named Brad from KC elephant but on my show many times is that right?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but well, Brad's from Bowling Green. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm in Louisville, so we're both Kentucky kids. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh wow Brad's been so awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, plenty of times. [SPEAKER_01]: Wow, that's very cool. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, Brad. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you know what what a lovely man that is.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Brad Schultz and so. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one experience we were able to go we were in Nashville with him and his engineer Jeremy and the song came together in in one day it was is pretty memorable day as it was the day also I think it was the day before that we were able to take our first look at the TV show after it had been kind of edited it together and you know like a very rough cut way so I have like a distinct [SPEAKER_01]: memory of that studio session those couple days because it was like number one excitement about this song excitement about being in the studio with Brad Schultz, but also like excitement about sitting on my little iPad in the corner at like any open moment that I had and watching the TV show for the first time.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's so much of this art imitating life that goes on through your real lives and the show and this moment I mean, it's called chasing the good times is like you're in the middle of this moment right here. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm in the good times. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm chasing them right now [SPEAKER_01]: of the process of chasing them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So you had a good experience with Brad? [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, nothing but nothing but it was it was incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: And he was so patient with us, he brought such a fun energy, you know, any time Brad liked something in the studio, he would just turn around and start like air drumming, just like, and just like doing this thing, and just like listening to that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just beeping your eye, be like, it's good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what a guy. [SPEAKER_01]: He's been, he's been promoting it, so had at least it came out, which like he didn't even require it to do. [SPEAKER_01]: It's fragile. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you don't want to promote this obviously.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: He's in there promoting it. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, making sure people are listening. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, nothing more great things to say. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so Brad. [SPEAKER_01]: Who brought the song in? [SPEAKER_01]: Brad brought the song in. [SPEAKER_01]: Brad brought the song in.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he did. [SPEAKER_01]: He that was his chorus and we had a ton of different ideas going that day and he just he walked in looking cool as ever and and said I have I have this idea as well. [SPEAKER_01]: We obviously were stoked to hear it. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, the whole chorus idea was his.
[SPEAKER_01]: and we built around it, which is the only time that that has happened in run around history where it was one of the five of us that brought in the like the meat of the song. [SPEAKER_01]: So it was a nice change of pace for us and not having to worry about like, do we sound repetitive? [SPEAKER_01]: Because that's like, it's a problem with us, as we're always always dogging ourselves, going, this sounds repetitive.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've done this before, we've done this before. [SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was a day where we didn't have to feel any of that. [SPEAKER_01]: It felt fresh as ever, and so we were like, you know what? [SPEAKER_01]: This is really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: That's, let's just do the other ideas tomorrow.
[SPEAKER_01]: This one's fun. [SPEAKER_04]: You got the song that could have been a cage, the elephant's song. [SPEAKER_01]: I guess so. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was the universe in some universe, probably. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it didn't really go, but yeah, you know, it has that cage gel if that sound to it, that feeling, that's what gets us so stoked.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a couple guys in the band that have been listening to the cage just from a very young age. [SPEAKER_01]: So they are particularly stoked. [SPEAKER_01]: That was a little later to the train, unfortunately, but I'm still a massive fan. [SPEAKER_04]: Never too late for any band. [SPEAKER_04]: Never too late.
[SPEAKER_01]: Never too late. [SPEAKER_04]: Never too late. [SPEAKER_04]: Do you all do you all? [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it really does sound like everything happens organically as you're saying, but do you all consider the characters at all when you're writing? [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's, um, there's a lot of that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the writing process for how to get split up into like songs for the show and just songs for songs. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of days, especially, especially during like early 2024 when we knew we were, we were picked up. [SPEAKER_01]: And we knew we were going to shoot because that I mean for a long time we didn't even know if there was going to be a TV show It hadn't gotten green lit So we were just banning it in the meantime, but when we really got picked up and it was like, okay, this is happening for sure We kind of entered like song mode for for the TV show [SPEAKER_01]: And so that was a lot more of a structured process where it's like we're the songwriting process ever you're going into like we spent the month in LA January 2024 and every day we were kind of given like an assignment almost like you're like some kind of songwriting camp.
[SPEAKER_01]: giving an assignment for a situation that hasn't happened to you or any of your friends, but could very well happen to you and your friends in a very distant or very near-distant reality. [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, given storylines about stuff that's happening in the TV show, and you're writing from the perspective of the characters and you're submitting that at the end of the day and getting feedback from the TV show side.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was the only time that we've kind of written like that, especially in such like a short amount of time. [SPEAKER_01]: We were banging those out really, really quickly. [SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of like an everyday new song kind of vibe. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it was really fun. [SPEAKER_01]: It was like entering like, [SPEAKER_01]: school at the start of the day and then like leaving six hours later with like up to 10 she'll song it's just like a verse in chorus demoed up real quick and then like you did the next day you continued on it or you scrapping and you started over and yet we became out with like the majority of the season one soundtrack during that time [SPEAKER_01]: We're working with an incredible producer named Matthew Koma in Los Angeles, and yeah, so that was very much about like centered story centered songs, stuff that we need it to tie into the storyline.
[SPEAKER_04]: And so you do a month-long writing session. [SPEAKER_04]: We get this track. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm guessing there are more tracks that we're going to hear at some point soon. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to, we're going to keep dropping. [SPEAKER_01]: We're trying to, as you said, put together the discovery of the real band.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're never going to put some kind of like hard line in the sand between like songs that we can tour in songs that we can't because they're from the TV show, whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, [SPEAKER_01]: You know at the end of the day it's all it's all made by us and it's the same band.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like it's all the run around But we just we know we want to keep we want to keep stuff fresh We want to we want to make sure that that there's stuff for people to listen to in between hopefully multiple seasons of the PV show So yeah, we're we just did chasing it get times. [SPEAKER_01]: I think we're I think we're gearing back up to to go and do a couple more [SPEAKER_01]: Well, and of course, we need to keep writing, which will happen.
