[SPEAKER_03]: I'm Commander Shepherd, and this is my favorite lorecast on the Citadel. [SPEAKER_05]: Welcome to the Mass Effect Lorecast. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm in seven the legend and I'm Genesis. [SPEAKER_05]: Join us as we explore along tides of light and through shows of dust to see where this lore began and consider where it may go.

[SPEAKER_05]: Specters, so welcome back to the Mass Effect Garrison cast. [SPEAKER_05]: I am your host in seven the Garrison joining me as always is the wonderful Garrison's go-in [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I'm so ready to talk Garus part three of probably like six or seven. [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know how many episodes we're going to make this 11-D-7 We're gonna we're gonna be talking about Garus until 2027 so hand Garus beat Garvug single handedly maybe [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know.

[SPEAKER_05]: It depends on which side he's fighting for, I guess. [SPEAKER_05]: So, um, okay. [SPEAKER_05]: So, when we were talking last time, we made a lot of jokes about his playlist that he'd listen to, right? [SPEAKER_05]: And I think you've been compiling some ideas for people. [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, I actually did make a Spotify playlist called [SPEAKER_06]: The cover art for it is the lovely sexy garris picture of him wearing a well-placed Santa hat.

[SPEAKER_06]: So you should be able to easily find it. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a million. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a million. [SPEAKER_06]: Seven. [SPEAKER_06]: Yes. [SPEAKER_06]: And 42 songs have been added by over seven different contributors so far. [SPEAKER_06]: It's an open playlist. [SPEAKER_06]: So if you have a Spotify account and you find the playlist, you can add to it.

[SPEAKER_06]: if you feel like face the flow of what Gary should listen to. [SPEAKER_05]: Are these seven people that you know, or is it just like random people across the internet? [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I'm assuming that there are all listeners of the podcast. [SPEAKER_06]: A few names that I recognize.

[SPEAKER_06]: Like I'm obviously I'm the main contributor in the starter. [SPEAKER_06]: My husband has added to them. [SPEAKER_06]: Mossman has added to them. [SPEAKER_06]: I recognized a few other names as well that have shown up on the list of contributors. [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, while you're talking, I'm going to pull it up on my other screen over here on Spotify.

[SPEAKER_05]: And we can go through some of the songs that are on here. [SPEAKER_05]: We're not going to play them, of course, because we'd get sued. [SPEAKER_05]: But I'm going to go ahead and has already guessed that breaking Benjamin is already on there. [SPEAKER_06]: a few songs, I believe. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, for sure.

[SPEAKER_05]: Okay. [SPEAKER_05]: So it's called Garus Vicaram mix. [SPEAKER_05]: And then V a K a r i m i x. I don't think I just that's the one I found it. [SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, so I want to give proper credit to the people who have contributed so far. [SPEAKER_05]: We've got you, of course, Garusus.

[SPEAKER_05]: We've got Astrobot. [SPEAKER_05]: We've got Eddie L. We've got Hello Wolf. [SPEAKER_05]: We've got Jason K. We've got more cash and mothman. [SPEAKER_05]: So thank you for your contributions to the Garus of a Caramix. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, of course. [SPEAKER_05]: I was going to say I hate everything about you.

[SPEAKER_05]: It's got to be on there. [SPEAKER_05]: But you beat me to it. [SPEAKER_06]: So lots of good songs on there. [SPEAKER_06]: It's actually so far been a pretty epic playlist. [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm having a lot of fun with it seeing what other people are adding to it. [SPEAKER_05]: How is, how was click-click boom?

[SPEAKER_05]: Not, oh, there it is, sorry. [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't see it. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, man, I got to, I got to add the what's that one song from the Crystal Method, the uses sample of Chris Rock like, listen up, mother of fuckers. [SPEAKER_05]: You remember what I was talking about? [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe not so go ahead and add it to the list and then I'll take a listen to it for sure that's going on there Someone somewhere that's listening to this podcast is like I know that song I know what he's talking about it was in like triple X for the Vin Diesel I think that's the reason Yeah, that would probably be one of Garus's favorite movies Triple X absolutely yeah [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, now we need to make an IMDB list of Garrison's favorite films. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, all right. [SPEAKER_06]: I think that we can do maybe in the post show. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's right. [SPEAKER_06]: So we have a lot to talk about. [SPEAKER_05]: We do. [SPEAKER_05]: Right. [SPEAKER_05]: And last time we were talking about Garrison's daddy issues, right?

[SPEAKER_05]: And we focused a lot on his final conversation with his dad or at least what he thought would be his final conversation. [SPEAKER_05]: While he's getting swarmed by Merks on the bridge, or they're trying to swarm him, they're storming down the bridge, he's taking off, taking on Merks left and right with a sniper, and he tells his dad he's got one more thermal clip left.

[SPEAKER_05]: Dad says, you know, never give up. [SPEAKER_05]: As long as you've got one round left, you know, you can finish this. [SPEAKER_05]: right and saves the day. [SPEAKER_05]: And so now Garrison's on the ship and he's to and and this is the first look we get at how our approach to him and Mass Effect won shaped his personality, renegade Paragon or neutral.

[SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, a lot last week about his dad, but I've learned from you that he has mommy issues as well. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if he necessarily has mommy issues, but he definitely has some mommy trauma to talk about, and it's not really anybody's fault. [SPEAKER_06]: We do get an interaction with her and his homeworld comic, and we can read about her in Mass Effect 2 during the Shadow Broker DLC, because that's where we can find out that she [SPEAKER_06]: Which one broke and down is basically the theory and equivalent of Alzheimer's disease and humans in the real world.

[SPEAKER_06]: And we also find that he's been sending money home for treatments and even ends up sending tissue samples of the collectors to try and help researchers find a cure. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh my gosh, this is really, really tragic. [SPEAKER_05]: So, garris is basically fighting this battle. [SPEAKER_05]: And this is in his mind, the whole time he's doing his calibrations in the weapons bay.

[SPEAKER_05]: And he doesn't talk about it. [SPEAKER_05]: So how do we learn about it? [SPEAKER_06]: So we learn about it through the Shadowbroker dossiers and all of the information on the terminal there. [SPEAKER_06]: And there are two key entries that let us know a lot about what his mom is going through.

[SPEAKER_06]: one is a chat transcript. [SPEAKER_06]: The last text exchange before the Omega 4 relay drum jump between Garis and his sister Solana. [SPEAKER_06]: And this is the only place where we hear her name or see her name even. [SPEAKER_05]: I like that her name contains soul as in the soul system.

[SPEAKER_06]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a really pretty name, too. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Solana. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I do love that name. [SPEAKER_05]: I think at my next female, like, O.C. [SPEAKER_05]: like character and in some kind of game RPG that I play is going to be Solana. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_06]: Definitely could do that. [SPEAKER_06]: Uh, maybe I don't think I could name my character Garus though. [SPEAKER_06]: That's already a fully fleshed out story. [SPEAKER_05]: What if you rearrange the letters in his name? [SPEAKER_05]: Like, [SPEAKER_06]: Stardust? [SPEAKER_06]: Like, I think that doesn't sound good.

[SPEAKER_05]: Uh, Ras, Rascus. [SPEAKER_06]: There it goes. [SPEAKER_06]: Riggus. [SPEAKER_05]: Riggus. [SPEAKER_05]: There you go. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: We'll go with Riggus. [SPEAKER_05]: Ronald Riggus. [SPEAKER_06]: This exchange is also quite interesting to read through, and there are two parts to it.

[SPEAKER_06]: Do you want to read out the garrison lines? [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, a dramatic reading. [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, I do. [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. [SPEAKER_05]: So, the text exchange has a little bit of pretext before it, it says, this is the last text before the Omega 4 relay jump, Geras Vicarian in parentheses.

[SPEAKER_05]: It says location, Normandy, SR2. [SPEAKER_05]: Solana Vicarian, parenthetical says location, Palaven, at 9, no, no, at 10, 08, PM, Geras says, hey, glad I caught you. [SPEAKER_06]: Lana, just about to head to bed, late my time. [SPEAKER_06]: Where are you? [SPEAKER_05]: Come on, you know I can't tell you that.

[SPEAKER_05]: Not a secure channel. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, please, Gareth. [SPEAKER_06]: You don't have to be all secretive. [SPEAKER_06]: Illium? [SPEAKER_05]: Give it up, soul. [SPEAKER_06]: You're one to talk. [SPEAKER_06]: Still playing at Spectre, even after all these years? [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_05]: How's mom?

[SPEAKER_06]: Last round of treatments didn't go so well. [SPEAKER_06]: We may try an off-world center. [SPEAKER_06]: Some salarian doctors have something that might work. [SPEAKER_06]: It's not covered, though. [SPEAKER_05]: Of course not. [SPEAKER_05]: I can pay for the treatments. [SPEAKER_06]: That's a nice thought.

[SPEAKER_06]: I really could use you here, though. [SPEAKER_05]: I can't. [SPEAKER_05]: How much for the first round? [SPEAKER_06]: Forget it. [SPEAKER_05]: I can pay. [SPEAKER_06]: Sure, you can. [SPEAKER_06]: You lost your job at C-SEC, and what about that contract job you were doing up until recently?

[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it ended badly. [SPEAKER_06]: So don't give me more garbage about how you're going to help. [SPEAKER_06]: You obviously can't help or won't bother. [SPEAKER_06]: Damn it! [SPEAKER_06]: You haven't even bothered to sync up for a video chat since the last time since you lost that damn job.

[SPEAKER_06]: If you're ashamed to look me in the eye, then why are we even talking? [SPEAKER_06]: Go have your fun doing Mark work or screwing around or whatever. [SPEAKER_06]: Just don't act like you care. [SPEAKER_05]: You're right, Saul. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_06]: No. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sorry.

[SPEAKER_06]: Things are rough with mom. [SPEAKER_06]: The salarians are expensive as hell. [SPEAKER_05]: I wish I could help. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going on a trip. [SPEAKER_05]: I'd be away from the relays for a while. [SPEAKER_06]: Another pleasure, cruise. [SPEAKER_05]: You know me. [SPEAKER_06]: Send me something nice.

[SPEAKER_05]: I'll be in touch when I can. [SPEAKER_05]: And so that's how it wraps up. [SPEAKER_05]: That's rough. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: And that conversation took place over a half an hour, over text chat. [SPEAKER_06]: So you know that it's just like there is time in between those messages where you're like directing what the person is going to say next.

[SPEAKER_06]: There is a four minute gap in between Solana saying, just don't act like you care before garrison messages back, you're right, Saul. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_05]: Wow. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_05]: He thought about that one for a little bit. [SPEAKER_05]: Um, or he was busy with his calibrations.

[SPEAKER_05]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_05]: Good of both. [SPEAKER_05]: What did you, I don't know what this my first time actually reading this. [SPEAKER_05]: Because I am so bad. [SPEAKER_05]: I guess about going through the Shadowbroker files. [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, that I completely skimmed over this. [SPEAKER_05]: I honestly don't remember reading this at all.

[SPEAKER_05]: So, you know, first absolute first take on this seeing it. [SPEAKER_06]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_06]: It does. [SPEAKER_06]: They have that, you know, that very quick, easy brother and sister getting back together and talking about things. [SPEAKER_06]: And the bluntness to be able to just go house mom without having to give any backstory, any history, but just knowing that if I asked my sister how is mom, she's going to know exactly what I'm talking about.

[SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_05]: There is no pretense. [SPEAKER_05]: there's zero. [SPEAKER_05]: And maybe part of that is touring culture a little bit. [SPEAKER_05]: Where they're just kind of to the point, they're not wearing another face, so to speak, especially with family. [SPEAKER_05]: I find [SPEAKER_05]: And he wants to be, um, but he can't give them his time because of the mission.

[SPEAKER_05]: And likely talked about all last week, Garrison's extremely mission oriented, and he's got a chip on his shoulder, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't love his family. [SPEAKER_05]: However, I can see from his family's perspective, they, they're not inside his mind. [SPEAKER_05]: All they see is a lack of Garrison round.

[SPEAKER_06]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_06]: And all they see is that he quit his job at C-SEC. [SPEAKER_06]: He either potentially went back and then quit again, or he decided to go to Spectre School and then quit that. [SPEAKER_06]: And then dropped off for a unknown Merck job where he went off and became Archangel.

[SPEAKER_06]: And then, as far as anybody in his family knows, that's where he's still at, not out there being the savior of the galaxy with Shepherd. [SPEAKER_05]: Man, when you put it that way, I wonder if some of his family thinks of him like, kind of like the family failure, the family disappointment.

[SPEAKER_06]: Garus is totally the black sheep right now. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: They don't know what he's up to. [SPEAKER_05]: I think that is that is so fitting for Garus, though, to be the black sheep. [SPEAKER_05]: Because he, I think he actually kind of enjoys being the black sheep of any group.

[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, a little bit of a loner, a little bit of a, let me keep everybody else at Arms Reach for now, just to keep himself protected. [SPEAKER_06]: Cause obviously there's a lot weighing on him. [SPEAKER_05]: So getting into the stuff about his mom's illness. [SPEAKER_05]: Do we learn more about, you know, what exactly his mom has?

[SPEAKER_05]: Because at this point, it's just, you know, all we hear is the last round of treatments. [SPEAKER_05]: But you mentioned something called corpolis syndrome earlier. [SPEAKER_06]: We do, and we have a private message sent directly to Gary's. [SPEAKER_06]: It's the last mail message received before the Omega 4 relay jump.

[SPEAKER_06]: That's somehow the Shadow Broker got access to. [SPEAKER_06]: I also don't like the fact that Shadow Broker has Gary's private DMs. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, very interested in garrison's private life, maybe that's because the shadowbroker was hired by one of the murkings. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, dig into everything about garrison.

[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, these were sent right before the Omega 4 relay jump. [SPEAKER_06]: This isn't pre or during archangel. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, this is, this is far afterward. [SPEAKER_05]: So could have been one of the murk gangs trying to get retribution afterward got out that it was garrison.

[SPEAKER_05]: So, you know, but here I got the message here in front of me. [SPEAKER_04]: It says, [SPEAKER_04]: Mr. Vikari, on behalf of Helo's Medical Institute, I would like to thank you for your efforts. [SPEAKER_04]: It has been understandably difficult to get collector tissue given this insidiv situation on the human colony, so the samples you've sent us have been extremely helpful.

[SPEAKER_04]: Please also offer my sincere thanks to Dr. Solis, I understand he made some calls to the special tasks group, and as a result, our corporate security clearance was upgraded. [SPEAKER_04]: Your concern about corpolis syndrome is well-founded. [SPEAKER_04]: While rare, it is an ugly disease.

[SPEAKER_04]: The neurological degeneration is both difficult to witness and nearly impossible to halt. [SPEAKER_04]: We are, in fact, working on some test trials for a new treatment. [SPEAKER_04]: And I believe that with our new STG clearance, we can get all the fees for trial members waived as a governmental cooperation effort with the Taurian hierarchy.

[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you again for your assistance donations like these help us running. [SPEAKER_04]: Per year request, we will keep your donations strictly anonymous. [SPEAKER_04]: Since dearly, Dr. Gillith Kieran, he loves medical institute. [SPEAKER_04]: That was my salarian impression, I don't know.

[SPEAKER_04]: Was that good? [SPEAKER_05]: That was good, that was very good. [SPEAKER_05]: There's no voice effects on that, by the way. [SPEAKER_06]: Nope, that was Purseum. [SPEAKER_06]: Good job, and this is what we talked about how you learned about the Corpalis syndrome and exactly what his mom is going through.

[SPEAKER_06]: And thanks, Morton, for also being a part of this conversation using his STG clearances to help out this foundation and also keeping [SPEAKER_06]: because Morton doesn't tell us about this at all. [SPEAKER_06]: There's that Dr. [SPEAKER_06]: Patient Privilege confident in reality that he never reaches.

[SPEAKER_06]: Morton never talks about it. [SPEAKER_05]: This is just another feather and Morton's cap about like, what a good dude he is. [SPEAKER_06]: right? [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, Morden. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_05]: So, so this is kind of referencing how they were already talking about the salarians, right?

[SPEAKER_05]: Salarians being expensive researchers. [SPEAKER_05]: And this is already a rare disease. [SPEAKER_05]: So it sounds like they really have to go to a niche medical institute to help fund research. [SPEAKER_05]: I got to be honest, [SPEAKER_06]: Well, that we don't know. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't, we know that he's not making a lot of money, but we, anything that he's getting is obviously going straight to the foundation or back to Salana, back to Palvin.

[SPEAKER_06]: Gary says a good kid. [SPEAKER_05]: Well, and he's dealing with all of this while he's still on the normandy. [SPEAKER_05]: That's our two. [SPEAKER_06]: So, even more backstory and lore to garrison that you may have not known about. [SPEAKER_05]: Right on. [SPEAKER_05]: Well, it looks like my camera has decided that today or right now is the time of the day that it's going to cut out for a little bit.

[SPEAKER_05]: So why don't we hop over to the midbrake and do all we're doing that? [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to try and fix it. [SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_05]: Here we go. [SPEAKER_10]: We have beef, bacon, we have beer, the foods of my people. [SPEAKER_01]: Young men have funny ideas of what a story are like.

[SPEAKER_01]: I blame the extra net and computer games. [SPEAKER_07]: Rex, shepherd, grunt, shepherd, Rex. [SPEAKER_07]: Right. [SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_05]: Here we are in the middle of the show and my camera has resumed. [SPEAKER_05]: So this is the part of the the part of the foe where we feed out your five five or fifth.

[SPEAKER_05]: This is the part of the show where we read out your five star reviews if I can speak. [SPEAKER_05]: And it doesn't look like we have any new ones. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it doesn't look like we have any new ones on Apple Podcasts, however, I suppose I can go over here to Spotify and click on our most recent episode where we do have three new comments and that was on the creating the best class for Mass Effect 5 episode and by the way, before anyone jumps down my throat, we've called it Mass Effect 4 and 5, I just don't give a damn at this point.

[SPEAKER_05]: So, you know, if you do props to you, I don't care which side you're on, I don't care. [SPEAKER_06]: I love that you accidentally threw in a garage loud in there. [SPEAKER_06]: I just don't give a damn any more shepherd. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, I'm garrison-maxing over here. [SPEAKER_05]: So we've got some comments on that episode of One From Adam Parker, who writes in defensive engineers, in Mass Effect One, it's incredibly frustrating to go up to chests and devices that you're too unskilled to open.

[SPEAKER_05]: That's a really anonymous issue for the engineer. [SPEAKER_05]: That is a great point, Adam, because I being a loot goblin, absolutely hated when I am locked out of loot. [SPEAKER_05]: So it means that I always max out garrisons, still line or talis and bring them everywhere because I'm never an engineer, so great point, Adam, okay, well if you want to leave us a review that is one of the top ways that you can help the show get discovered, especially because [SPEAKER_05]: We know that there's a lot more mass effect fans out there than currently listen to the show or know about the show.

[SPEAKER_05]: So, uh, tell a friend in person. [SPEAKER_05]: I don't care. [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, or, you know, DM them a link or better yet. [SPEAKER_05]: If you write a review on one of the pages for the show, it helps us show up earlier in search results. [SPEAKER_05]: It helps us get suggested to people.

[SPEAKER_05]: That kind of thing. [SPEAKER_05]: Um, [SPEAKER_05]: That being said, we move over to the voice line pop quiz. [SPEAKER_05]: Now, Genesis, I think I was supposed to get one for you this week, or yes, I was. [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. [SPEAKER_05]: I dropped the ball on that one. [SPEAKER_06]: Uh, I don't think that I have one in the gate ready to go.

[SPEAKER_06]: No, the last one that I still have is the one that you guessed last time. [SPEAKER_06]: Uh, so. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, well. [SPEAKER_05]: Well, that's my fault. [SPEAKER_05]: You guys can blame me. [SPEAKER_05]: It's been a long week. [SPEAKER_05]: Trying to get prepared for small vacation and other excuses.

[SPEAKER_05]: So. [SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_05]: I'll I'll double up next week. [SPEAKER_05]: And I'll give you two. [SPEAKER_05]: I'll give you two voice lines next week. [SPEAKER_05]: That's it. [SPEAKER_05]: And we do have to thank a new patron for signing up as Strobo Studios. [SPEAKER_05]: Thank you so much for joining the Patreon.

[SPEAKER_05]: And we have our tier 5 patrons that we like to shout out every week that includes William Superfly 440, Reddrobot, Lt. Casino, Kira C, Edboy, and Dave. [SPEAKER_05]: Thank you all so much for your continued support of the show, 200 and 50. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, 250 episodes later, because we do have an episode zero, uh, we are still here doing this.

[SPEAKER_05]: Here's to another 250 more. [SPEAKER_05]: Thanks to people like you. [SPEAKER_05]: Now with that, let's get back to the rest of the show. [SPEAKER_00]: After time and drift among open stars, a long tides of light and through shows of dust, I will return to where I began. [SPEAKER_08]: Celery and reproduction different, very little sex-trade.

[SPEAKER_08]: If intended to try human, would try you. [SPEAKER_08]: Ow, my pengest! [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, we're in the second half of the show. [SPEAKER_05]: And I am, yeah, apparently not allowed to move because I moved and my camera can out. [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm gonna work on fixing that yet again and we'll see if we can keep a live show on the air.

[SPEAKER_05]: What do you think, Genesis? [SPEAKER_05]: Is this possible? [SPEAKER_05]: I guess I need to go make some calibrations. [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, please go do some calibrations and I will bring us back to the point where we talk about Gary's being on the Normandy. [SPEAKER_06]: Because of the condition of Gary's has upon joining your mission to stop the collectors is, of course, his loyalty mission.

[SPEAKER_06]: And that is to find and kill Sedonus. [SPEAKER_06]: We talked a lot about Sedonus in his homeworld comics and about why he wants to get revenge. [SPEAKER_06]: Ogaris wants revenge as usual, but for Garis, this is more about wounded pride than it is about justice. [SPEAKER_06]: This Garis, in Sedona, is about Turians, and the betrayal feels extra sharp, knowing that Sedona's actions reflect back onto Garis, because of the way the Turian culture works.

[SPEAKER_06]: Just like Garis's actions reflected back on his father when the dad was a supervisor. [SPEAKER_05]: So this, I don't know why this brought to mind, but I finally realized who Garus reminds me of in DC Comics. [SPEAKER_05]: It's not Batman. [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, and it's also not the Punisher, which people also bring up.

[SPEAKER_05]: But in DC Comics, Garus reminds me of Harvey Dent. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, two face. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay. [SPEAKER_06]: Um, I could see that. [SPEAKER_06]: I do. [SPEAKER_05]: The I make my own luck. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, but I don't think that garrison would really. [SPEAKER_06]: The coin flip is what shepherds morality.

[SPEAKER_05]: I guess if you're playing a random chapter, the thing is that he makes his own luck, right? [SPEAKER_05]: So it's heads on one side and it's heads on the other, it's just the burnt head on the other. [SPEAKER_05]: So I feel like he's like Harvey Dent because Harvey started as a white knight, right?

[SPEAKER_05]: He started with these high hopes and aspirations and then he gets just so damn jaded. [SPEAKER_05]: and his major facial scars, major facial scars, and his anger and his hatred and his his lust for revenge, lead him down a very dark path. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, well that would be a very interesting side by side character analysis.

[SPEAKER_05]: So I think it's probably when you when you said wounded pride. [SPEAKER_05]: right, both being primary motivators for both characters, although to be honest, I think Harvey cares more about his idea of justice, but to be fair, Garrison also thinks that he's doming out justice where there is a lack of it.

[SPEAKER_06]: Yep, and we've seen that through his C-sectase, we see that in his way of needing a retribution and a reaction, and because he feels like he needs to find his own personal sense of justice for the members of his team that he lost. [SPEAKER_05]: Yep, so that brings us to Sedonus, and basically, I think this is the biggest [SPEAKER_05]: critical watershed moment for garrison's character development.

[SPEAKER_05]: Because this is this is different than a lot of the other loyalty missions that we can get, right? [SPEAKER_05]: Most of them deal with familial issues, garrison's family is not in the picture. [SPEAKER_05]: So where we had jacks, [SPEAKER_05]: that, of course, is similar, but they're very different reasons.

[SPEAKER_05]: So Geras' loyalty mission is also unique, that in that there is no way to fail it. [SPEAKER_05]: You can't fail it, per se. [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I guess you can do something you didn't mean to do, right? [SPEAKER_05]: But there's no way to fail it. [SPEAKER_05]: So no matter how you play it, though, you earn whose loyalty.

[SPEAKER_05]: That's different from say [SPEAKER_05]: As Shepherd and Geris start tracking down information on Sedonus, it becomes increasingly apparent that Geris's dark side has returned, that the dark side of his face. [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, and we can either help or hinder that. [SPEAKER_05]: Are you fighting a cat over there?

[SPEAKER_05]: I can see that on the other side of your camera, is your arm getting a beating? [SPEAKER_06]: I'm trying to use my mouse and I'm currently unavailable to do so, so this is about to get very interesting or very painful. [SPEAKER_06]: Now, these character arcs and the all of the loyalty missions that our squadmates go on, they revolve around a central problem that the main character or shepherd helps to resolve.

[SPEAKER_06]: We have more than feeling guilt over the second genophage. [SPEAKER_06]: Grunt needing his identity. [SPEAKER_06]: Miranda struggles with her father and Rex is becoming a leader and also on and so on, but Garis, any struggle that he has is framed by Shepard's sense of justice, and these secondary arcs of Dr. Salyon and Stonis are used to reinforce [SPEAKER_06]: are used to reinforce his attachment to Shepard.

[SPEAKER_06]: We've mentioned this, but Garus is Shepard's best friend, regardless of romance status. [SPEAKER_06]: And narratively, Garus's story arc is how he grows closer to Shepard. [SPEAKER_06]: I'll show there are internal struggles along the way, but mainly Garus is at his best with Shepard. [SPEAKER_05]: So, I'm gonna dress that real quick, but I have to address the elephant-sized cat in the room, which is, your cat Maya, her tail flicking rapidly and violently on the camera.

[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I'm bleeding in three different places now because of her attacks. [SPEAKER_06]: This is awesome. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh my gosh, someone needs to get tossed out like DJ Jazzy Jeff. [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, it's for real. [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, so I, I agree. [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like this is also yet another, um, instance in which we can see that garrison is almost like a proto-shepard.

[SPEAKER_05]: You know, we talked a little bit about it with garrison's dirty dozen crew with Arc Angel, the Arc Angel squad last week, and how many parallels are drawn there? [SPEAKER_05]: on that note, I wish that we had a similar betrayal on our squad that I feel like that would have made the story really, really impactful, but I feel like this is the writer's yet again kind of giving the player agency, not only do you have agency over Shepherd and Shepherd's own choices, but you have people that are close to you looking to you for guidance.

[SPEAKER_06]: and these loyalty missions then allow us to help mold that and shape that and either help people to see the world through a different view or to just kind of give into whatever they're feeling. [SPEAKER_06]: Especially when it comes to Jacob and Zayid and things like that, we can really help shape and mold them as well.

[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and this mission shepherd can totally be the good, good, [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I do go a little bit of dark side in this machine. [SPEAKER_06]: Why? [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, okay. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, look, it's my own, it's my thing and I'm aware of this because when it comes to the Sedona's mission, we get to shoot Harkin in the knee, which I always let garrison do.

[SPEAKER_06]: When in reality, it's a paragon interrupt to prevent garrison from doing it. [SPEAKER_06]: I never pull the trigger, I just hate harking that much, it's personal, but fuck that dude. [SPEAKER_06]: I always let Gary shoot harking. [SPEAKER_06]: And then we get to the big decision. [SPEAKER_06]: To spare Sedonus or to let Gary kill him.

[SPEAKER_06]: From a narrative and character growth standpoint, it feels better to help Gary see the light and spare Sedonus. [SPEAKER_05]: I, I feel like I have never actually allowed him to go through with killings to don't us, just because I care too much about Geras to see him follow that road to revenge.

[SPEAKER_05]: The road to revenge always ends with two deaths, your target and yourself, and right, that [SPEAKER_06]: will die if you achieve it, um, yeah, shooting harkin in the knee, not as big of a deal. [SPEAKER_05]: I'm good knee in the balls. [SPEAKER_05]: I love the win garrisonies in the balls.

[SPEAKER_05]: I'm like, okay. [SPEAKER_05]: That is fully, fully appropriate. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_06]: I just don't like getting hit on by men at the bars when I am clearly not there to do that. [SPEAKER_06]: So go ahead, baby, shoot him for me. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm okay with that. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I would love to love that though of Geras call them Tuts.

[SPEAKER_06]: Ooh, I would have solved in the wind. [SPEAKER_06]: I'd have to drink acid than hear you talk anymore. [SPEAKER_06]: great friendship line through Harkin, but speaking of this, the fact that neither of us have really ever done this in game of letting Gareth take the shot, I did pull the audio for it.

[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, well, I have the audio here and this is probably going to be a hard lesson for some people. [SPEAKER_05]: Here it is, the audio of Gareth fulfilling his revenge arc right here. [SPEAKER_02]: betrayal, repaid, Sidonus. [SPEAKER_02]: That was easy enough. [SPEAKER_09]: Clean and simple.

[SPEAKER_09]: Good work. [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks for helping me shepherd. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get moving. [SPEAKER_02]: I need to get away from this place. [SPEAKER_09]: Right with you. [SPEAKER_05]: You get the... Just, it's cold. [SPEAKER_05]: This is just an ice cold. [SPEAKER_05]: Honestly, murder. [SPEAKER_05]: It's murder.

[SPEAKER_05]: Whether or not you think it's justified. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh yeah, the shot is taken as Sedonus is trying to flee. [SPEAKER_06]: He's actively running away when Garus takes the shot to the back of his head. [SPEAKER_06]: It is cold, it is brutal, it is efficient. [SPEAKER_06]: And after, there's no guilt, no remorse, no sense of justice or resolution.

[SPEAKER_05]: Which frankly scares me. [SPEAKER_05]: that Gareth can carry this out with no visible signs of remorse, at least, because it makes me think that Gareth's ends justify the means approach has really taken fully fullhold of him. [SPEAKER_05]: And I worry about, you know, obviously, I'm putting myself in a situation of where I was the first play through because now, of course, in retrospect, I know everything that can happen.

[SPEAKER_05]: But had I not known, right, it's like, well, I don't know how far Garus is going to take that in the future, you know, what if someone somewhere doesn't abide by what Garus believes to be justice? [SPEAKER_06]: you know, and we add this side of him to the side of the reading about him in the shadow broker DLC of all those heinous crimes that he committed, you know, blowing up the bomb squad, shooting people with their smuggled guns, coughing on a quarry and viral serial killer.

[SPEAKER_06]: And then we add this of just straight up sniper to the back of the head while you're running away. [SPEAKER_06]: There's a darkness in garrison that a renegade shepherd can easily pull out of him. [SPEAKER_05]: What's most interesting to me about this is that garrison wouldn't want to face him, you know, face to face and demand answers.

[SPEAKER_05]: You know, he's not interested in answers. [SPEAKER_05]: He's just interested in revenge. [SPEAKER_05]: He doesn't care if Sedona's even knows who killed him. [SPEAKER_06]: He is, I mean, he does allow Shepard to go and talk to Sedona's. [SPEAKER_06]: And it, but in this scenario of taking the shot, Shepard is just there to say, hey, dude, come talk to me.

[SPEAKER_06]: Let me line you up for the shot, so Gary's can kill him right away. [SPEAKER_05]: All right, it's got like, Gary's is like, [SPEAKER_05]: Hey, you remember, oh, mega, you know, there's no tagline like that. [SPEAKER_06]: Unless I'm misremembering, I could be shepherd does, you know, say like I'm here because Garus Vicarion sent me in both and both versions of the scene.

[SPEAKER_05]: So Sedonus knows that Garus is is there yet still Garus doesn't want to be the one. [SPEAKER_05]: right like it I think it says a lot the garrison's willing to use a sniper and not a knife. [SPEAKER_06]: And we do get a little bit of that in a conversation a little bit further down the road.

[SPEAKER_06]: And when shepherd says stays in the other side of the conversation, when shepherd does stay in line of the fire blocks the shot and does the paragon interrupt to [SPEAKER_06]: we do get a much more satisfying outcome. [SPEAKER_06]: It's also one of his defining lines. [SPEAKER_06]: It explains his black and white thinking, the thing that we've talked about several times over the last few episodes.

[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so this is the one that I've seen in every play-through of my own, and so, you know, I always feel like this is the right way to go, even though necessarily it's not with Gareth's wants or says he wants, but I'm going to go ahead and play that for us now. [SPEAKER_02]: I know you want to talk about this, but I don't, not yet.

[SPEAKER_09]: I know it didn't go the way you planned, but I think it's for the best. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not so sure. [SPEAKER_09]: Give it time. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, maybe that'll be enough. [SPEAKER_02]: I want to know I did the right thing, not just for me. [SPEAKER_02]: For my men, they deserve to be avenged.

[SPEAKER_02]: But when Sidonus was in my sights, I just couldn't do it. [SPEAKER_09]: The lines between good and evil blur are one more looking at people we know. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there was still good in him. [SPEAKER_02]: I could see it so much easier to see the world than black and white. [SPEAKER_02]: Gray, I don't know what to do with Gray.

[SPEAKER_09]: You gotta go with your instincts. [SPEAKER_09]: Don't be too hard on yourself. [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks, Shepherd. [SPEAKER_02]: For everything. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get going. [SPEAKER_02]: I need some distance from this place. [SPEAKER_09]: I'm with you. [SPEAKER_05]: Don't be too hard on yourself.

[SPEAKER_05]: Thanks, Shepherd. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I'm sure he's going to stop being hard on himself after that. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, it's also one of the rare currencies where we get to see shepherd touch garish, which is nice in that moment. [SPEAKER_06]: It is kind of like a brother, not necessarily like a physically affectionate moment, but it is a hand reach out place on his chest, you know, like, hey, I'm here with you in this moment, buddy.

[SPEAKER_06]: which between Shepard and Garrison is extremely rare because of Tory and culture. [SPEAKER_06]: They are not physically affectionate people and it is very rare for them to be like physically forward. [SPEAKER_06]: Garrison touches Shepard exactly one time in Mass Effect 1 and that is the very initial [SPEAKER_05]: So I guess you could say that every time they touch, he gets this feeling.

[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I am so ready to get talking about the touching and the kissing bit, but that's like a whole other half hour, 45 minutes of conversation. [SPEAKER_05]: It's gonna have to wait, and I see that my wife has shown up in the live chat. [SPEAKER_05]: She's probably shaking your head on my dad's joke right now.

[SPEAKER_05]: So, all right, we still have a lot to talk about, garrison, but regardless of what you do, [SPEAKER_06]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_06]: He is our writer die. [SPEAKER_06]: He is with Shepherd from the very start to the very end. [SPEAKER_06]: As long as you don't actively try to get him killed, I eat the suicide mission, he will always choose to be with or supporting Shepherd's cause.

[SPEAKER_06]: And this is the basis for their romance. [SPEAKER_06]: And [SPEAKER_06]: I would love to really get into it. [SPEAKER_06]: So maybe for just a few minutes, I'll at least get it started, so that way we have the precursor leaning into next week. [SPEAKER_05]: Sure, yes, please tantalizes.

[SPEAKER_06]: All right. [SPEAKER_06]: The romance between a garrison, a femme ship. [SPEAKER_06]: Bro, ship is not an option unless you mod it in there. [SPEAKER_06]: So for all of the nines, all of the things, I will be talking strictly from a femme ship point of view. [SPEAKER_06]: Now, the romance options for a fun ship with Garis is different because it's not about an instant physical attraction like it is with Jacob or spiritual connection like it is with Thane.

[SPEAKER_06]: It's rooted in shared experience. [SPEAKER_06]: But Garis can explain his feelings a lot better than I can. [SPEAKER_06]: And Shepherd meets with him after the mission after his loyalty mission was Sedonus. [SPEAKER_06]: and they talk about what it's like to be on a tourian ship and how they blow off steam.

[SPEAKER_06]: Gary's explains that they would hold essentially MMA fights to settle scores and release some tension. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I'm sure that release is something. [SPEAKER_05]: All right, well, I'll go ahead and play this clip [SPEAKER_02]: I remember right before one mission. [SPEAKER_02]: We were about to hit a battalion pirate squad, very risky.

[SPEAKER_02]: This recon scout and I had been had each other's thrones, nerve's mostly. [SPEAKER_02]: She suggested we settle it in the ring. [SPEAKER_09]: I assume you took her down gently. [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, she and I were the top ranked hand-to-hand specialist on the ship. [SPEAKER_02]: I have reached, but she had flexibility.

[SPEAKER_02]: It was brutal. [SPEAKER_02]: After nine rounds, the judge called it a draw. [SPEAKER_02]: There were a lot of unhappy betters in the training room. [SPEAKER_02]: We ended up holding a tiebreaker in her quarters. [SPEAKER_02]: I had reached, but she had flexibility. [SPEAKER_02]: One of the one way to work off stress, I guess.

[SPEAKER_09]: It sounds like you're carrying some tension. [SPEAKER_09]: Maybe I could help you get rid of it. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't think you'd feel like sparring commander. [SPEAKER_09]: But if we skipped right to the time breaker, we could test your reach and my flexibility. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I didn't.

[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely had a weakness from endless cars. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, why the hell not? [SPEAKER_02]: There's nobody in this galaxy that respects more than you. [SPEAKER_02]: If we can figure out a way to make it work, then. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, definitely. [SPEAKER_05]: the fact that both of them are like in that moment thinking about what the other one looks like naked.

[SPEAKER_06]: Oh gosh, mm. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, I'm over here like fanning myself and blushing about how many times I've heard this conversation a million times and yet it still still is very effective. [SPEAKER_06]: You haven't even heard the heart, the half of it. [SPEAKER_06]: The friendship has the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the

[SPEAKER_06]: But I will say that there is a line right there that is so important to the garrison romance. [SPEAKER_06]: And that is, there is nobody in this galaxy that I respect more than you. [SPEAKER_06]: this, this is why we fangirl. [SPEAKER_06]: This is why this relationship means so much to people.

[SPEAKER_06]: It's not about a fetish. [SPEAKER_06]: It's not about, ooh, want to try human. [SPEAKER_06]: It's wow. [SPEAKER_06]: A woman I respect, trust with my life, has had my back in so many situations, wants to take it to a physical level? [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, definitely. [SPEAKER_05]: in cells everywhere, screeching at their keyboard right now.

[SPEAKER_05]: What are you talking about? [SPEAKER_05]: Tim Shepp only wants a high value male. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, don't rage, baby. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, no, okay. [SPEAKER_05]: So imagine that you can have a pretty successful relationship if you respect your partner. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, it's more than 11.

[SPEAKER_06]: All right. [SPEAKER_06]: You know, she, you've kind of hinted and asked about this about what Garus would look like naked, and now Garus is also thinking about what shepherd would look like naked. [SPEAKER_06]: Well, they kind of both have that question. [SPEAKER_06]: And so does the entire fan base.

[SPEAKER_06]: What does this actually look like? [SPEAKER_06]: How are we supposed to make a Tory and human date night look like? [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, garris has the same questions and straight up asks you. [SPEAKER_05]: Why, I have some questions about what a date night would look like. [SPEAKER_05]: I don't really have any questions about what garris looks like with no clothes.

[SPEAKER_05]: I imagine it's terrifying. [SPEAKER_05]: But here, why don't we just let ship and garris speak for themselves? [SPEAKER_02]: I've been thinking about what we talked about, blowing off steam, easing tension. [SPEAKER_02]: I've never considered cross species in our corners, and dancing that way doesn't help.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now I feel dirty and clinical. [SPEAKER_02]: Are we crazy to even be thinking about this? [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure. [SPEAKER_02]: Look, Shepherd, I know you can find something a little closer to home. [SPEAKER_09]: I want something closer to home. [SPEAKER_09]: I want you. [SPEAKER_09]: I want someone I can trust.

[SPEAKER_02]: I can do that. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll find some music and do some research to figure out how this thing should work. [SPEAKER_02]: It'll either be a nighted treasure or a horrible inner species awkwardness thing. [SPEAKER_02]: In which case, fighting the collectors will be a welcome distraction, so, you know, are we in either way?

[SPEAKER_09]: You know, Garris, if you're not comfortable with this, it's okay. [SPEAKER_09]: I'm not trying to press you. [SPEAKER_02]: Shemba and you're about the only friend I've got left in this screwed up galaxy. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to pretend I've got a fish for humans. [SPEAKER_02]: But this isn't about that.

[SPEAKER_02]: This is about us. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't ever have to worry about making me uncomfortable. [SPEAKER_05]: He went back to his quarters and went on the extra net and looked up human anatomy. [SPEAKER_05]: For sure. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I mean, yes, he definitely played some videos and learned a little bit more about humans.

[SPEAKER_06]: And look, this is a real thing. [SPEAKER_06]: You know, neither garrison or shepherd has had sex with the other species. [SPEAKER_06]: In fact, it's probably still in the taboo realm. [SPEAKER_06]: It was less than 30 years after the first contact war. [SPEAKER_06]: There were still a lot of humans who don't like Turians and Turians who don't like humans.

[SPEAKER_06]: And in this situation, it shouldn't be on Garus alone to do all the research. [SPEAKER_06]: Shepherd needs to learn about her man, too. [SPEAKER_06]: So we get to go see Morton. [SPEAKER_05]: It's a little mandibles fluttering over there. [SPEAKER_06]: Only man's only man's only man's oh dear lord okay.

[SPEAKER_05]: well i think i think that probably brings us to the end it's a night we get a lot more to talk about with his romance and what we see as the game progresses into the omega 4 relay mission and then furthermore with Mass Effect 3 so uh why don't we wrap up here for today and then we'll [SPEAKER_05]: Genesis, uh, before I get, let your shout things out.

[SPEAKER_05]: What do you got going on, uh, like, game-wise? [SPEAKER_05]: What are you playing lately that you've been having a fun time with? [SPEAKER_06]: I've kind of gotten back into mobile gaming and just playing a bunch of little fun lose my mind scrolling and doing a little random activities on my phone, let very idle players, uh, while listening to YouTube's and podcasts in the background.

[SPEAKER_06]: I've been in a very [SPEAKER_05]: right on. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, same same here. [SPEAKER_05]: I've been really into some notica to the aquatic kind of go at your own pace and environmental storytelling really getting me through a nice way to dissociate. [SPEAKER_05]: So so I know that you've got the two girls one ship.

[SPEAKER_05]: You've got Cyberpunk. [SPEAKER_05]: Anything else you got going on that you want to shout out? [SPEAKER_06]: uh... portland retro gaming expo is coming up in october uh... and i know that that is always going to be a fun time we are in the works of getting the panels for this year set up so uh... hopefully people are able to make it out this year [SPEAKER_05]: right on.

[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I am still trying to work out my schedule for streaming and whatnot. [SPEAKER_05]: I got a job, so we'll be starting that in a couple weeks. [SPEAKER_05]: And my schedule is going to be pretty tentative for a little while, but in the meantime, stick with us on the lorecast, and you'll see our lovely faces.

[SPEAKER_05]: So until next time, specters, don't seek revenge. [SPEAKER_05]: It could end you. [SPEAKER_05]: But, seek reach and flexibility. [SPEAKER_05]: All right. [SPEAKER_06]: It can also end you. [SPEAKER_05]: It can also end you, maybe in a good way. [SPEAKER_05]: But we should go. [SPEAKER_05]: Thanks for listening to the Mass Effect War text.
