It up.

Snap by Ferguson, hold by Doman, kick on the way, and.

It is good!

And the Bills have won it in overtime!

Tyler Bass from 45 yards out lifts the Bills to a dramatic 37-34 overtime victory.

Ooh, Chris Brown on WGR.

The best wins are the ones that you thought you lost right before it happened. The Bills finish off the Rams 37-34 in a game where just minutes before, in overtime, the Rams set up for their own game-winning field goal attempt. But like so many Rams games of the Sean McVay era.

The special teams lets them down.

A blocked kick by Harrison Mevis. Great job by Greg Russo breaking through the line on a 48-yard attempt after Sean McVay gets conservative. Once again, to set up a shaky kicker for a long field goal. Once again, it doesn't happen. The Bills get the ball and Josh Allen does what he did all night, which is help to run the ball down the field to set up the game again.

Winner. What a game. I lost track, Jordan Roderig.

I think it was eight lead changes, four ties, 35 fourth quarter points. It was absolutely a game where we thought like the offense, like whoever has the ball last is going to win. But it didn't work out that way in overtime with the James Cook fumble. And then the Harrison Mevis blocked field goal. And it is the Bills who get out of there with a four and one record Rams now at two and three.

Omens and signs, Greg, omens and signs. Cause the Rams opened this game up by allowing a 70 yard kickoff return to the bills. And for me, it's always comes back.

It's so cyclical.

It's special teams over and over again with this team. When I covered them for, you know, five years, it always came back to. Special teams and lacking a clear solution for the problems that popped up over and over again. And I don't know if this ever gets fixed until Sean McVay as the head coach and one of the smartest coaches we have in this league right now. actually internalizes and understands how much this special teams unit and the way that it is operating over and over again actually limits his play calling, changes the way that he's able to attack opponents in the margins of these games.

And it is a complete and utter failure that they promise over and over again to fix, and it is not.

They don't really follow through with it in the way that they... Use the resources to like who they hire, you know, who they sign for special teamers.

Do you have special teams?

Only guys, special teams, coordinators. And there's so much more to get to this game. But we are starting on this because I like what you said there, Jordan, about McVay. But I wish he would change his play calling more because the part of the game that frustrated me the most was not Mivas missing the field goal earlier in the game or them giving up a kick return from a Rams special teams perspective. It was in overtime when they get the ball after James Cook makes that fumble.

Stafford goes deep to Davis Allen over the middle of the field. The Bills' defense absolutely gassed. Then Stafford goes deep to Pukanukuwa for 21 yards. The Rams' offense had not been stopped basically in the entire second half of the game. Then there's an incomplete to Kyron Williams. It's second and 10. A short, very conservative play call to Pukanukuwa.

For five yards.

And then the one that killed me was just running Kyron Williams into the middle of the line of scrimmage when Stafford had been playing so well all night, kind of accepting like, hey, it's on our special teams.

We have a special teams. Go and win the game for us. When the Bills.

Cornerbacks could not cover these Rams receivers by the end of this game. And I think you just got to trust Matthew Stafford there because I kind of assumed they're going to miss the kick unless it's like a 25 yard kick. I mean, going into it. And he definitely did not assume that.

It's a system. It's like a systemic issue.

It's an organizational failure because you're operating as if you fixed a problem that you clearly haven't. And it's not like there haven't been clues that this wasn't going to be working out this year. Every, almost every game this season, there's big, there's big issues. And so I don't want to take credit away from the bills either. You know, they, they played so great in the second half, that fourth quarter and overtime, especially Josh Allen was magical and, you know, tough fumble by James Cook, but ultimately absolved, right, when you win the game in that fashion at the end.

But it is actually striking at this point. You know, what is that age old saying, banging your head against the wall over and over and over again and expecting it not to hurt?

Like, what are we doing? You know, like, this is crazy to me.

It's an organization that prides itself on being at the forefront of so many things in this league in this age-old phase that does matter in this game and has always been important and always will be important, is even more important now with the rule change, continues to shoot them in the foot. It is malpractice at this point.

I thought after last year, it cost them, I think, a Super Bowl title because Seattle beat them because of special teams and they would have made it to the Super Bowl that things would have changed.

But it didn't.

They went into this week 32nd in DVOA, which measures all the parts of special teams. And, you know, they've been 32nd before. It is frustrating. One of the commenters asking, was that Josh Allen's best game as a scrambler?

Is he the best scrambling quarterback of all time?

I mean, he's had the most efficient play since he's entered the league, has been a Josh Allen scramble. So we might as well give out the Nationwide Player of the Week award. right now, and it's definitely Josh Allen, who, you know, on the ground goes for 10 carries, 121 yards, ends up with 210 yards through the air. He had that awful arm punt at the end of the first half, but that's on only 19 attempts. I don't believe he had a completion, Jordan, over 10 air yards until the very end of the game. I think we made it through regulation with him not having any, and yet it didn't matter between him And Josh Allen, I mean, and him and James Cook, who had those fumbles, they finished with 234 yards on the ground. And it's just like

an explosive offense, but it's a running offense. And I think they've kind of realized we need to be a run first team. And tonight without DJ Moore on the field, even though, you know, they were totally imbalanced run versus pass, they stuck with it all night long.

Yeah, and credit to them for sticking with it because it's hurt them before to not do that and to be maybe a little too worried or too precious about, you know, do we really open up Josh Allen at this point? And I would imagine after some of the bumpiness of the last couple weeks, this is something he's wanting to do. He's wanting to push for this. And to your point, Greg, close. It was only one pass of over 10 air yards, and it was the 17-yarder to Khalil Shakir.

Right in the fourth quarter.

When the games tied 27 all, that's when things really got fun and stayed fun through the end. But with this, with Josh Allen scrambling specifically, there were these wide open seams for him to attack. And it was almost like the Rams defense thought, based on what they had watched and some of the tentativeness maybe of the last couple of weeks and the understanding that they need to preserve him for the long term of the season, the Bills do, maybe they played him a little bit differently at times because maybe thinking this wasn't going to be as much of a part of the game plan as it was, and he made it that way.

He made it a factor in such a huge way.

The two runs that were so crazy was the 21-yard run that he had at the two-minute, and then again in overtime, that run when he picks up to ultimately set them up, for the game winner. It is so special to see how he can, how he can do this. It completely alters a game. It's caused his producer, Eric Roberts, who's at the game with his beautiful family. And, and, uh, was that his son's first bills game? I think it was, it was really cool.

Like maybe a little video from the game.

It causes him to, to text us, you know, what the F just happened after one of those big scrambles. Of course, he's ahead of us by a minute or so, but yeah, It just it's magical to watch him when he really opens up that way that he does. And it and it saved him tonight because their passing game was basically nonexistent without DJ Moore on the field.

Yeah, they look, he he ran the ball 10 times. He had a success rate of 100 percent, 12, 12 yards per carry. Every single run he had was successful. And look, it wasn't exactly a part of the game plan, but the Rams made it a part of the game plan. I think almost all of them were scrambles. None of them were designed runs. And I think you can look at how teams approach Josh Allen and talk about the rush plan that they had. We haven't seen enough juice from this Rams pass rush this season in general. Josiah Stewart gets a sack early in this game, gets some pressure on Josh Allen. The entire Patriots game plan last week is just about having a disciplined rush with the four and not allowing Josh Allen to run. And he

basically didn't run at all last week like that. were going to lose every other type of way, but they were going to make sure that he couldn't rush.

Now, that's a team that has the benefit of.

you know, bigger players up front, but more importantly, they play Josh Allen twice a year. And this is like the one thing they're going to do more than anything else. And I thought they did a brilliant job at that last week where like rushing as four instead of everyone just trying to win and losing gaps. And that's exactly what Josh Allen took advantage of. I do feel bad for James Cook because at one point in the game, James Cook was probably going to be the player of the game.

I want to listen to some positive highlights.

So let's actually go back to the fourth quarter. And let's listen to James Cook's go-ahead touchdown. This is with under two minutes to go. The two teams at this point were going back and forth with touchdowns. And you wondered if the Rams, if the Bills, who were trying to score their third straight touchdown, were going to try to milk the clock just a little more because the Rams had scored two straight touchdowns at that point. Instead, James Cook found pay dirt.

Let's listen. Tight end set. Two of them are on the left.

Knox on the right. Cook the lone setback.

Here's the snap.

Hand off to Cook.

Lowers the shoulder.

Driving his legs and he's into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night.

James Cook.

The Cook is in the kitchen with 144 left. He has given the Bills the lead back again.

Yeah, what I really love about this Bills team is they've had this offensive line together for so long, and Spencer Brown goes out tonight with a back injury, and it really didn't affect them. There were so many Rams defenders on the ground. They move as one. Where would you rank them, or where would you put them just in your mind's eye of best power-blocking rushing attacks right now, just like a cohesive rushing attack setting up for James Cook?

Well, honestly, I think we've, we saw two of like the top five teams tonight in, in the rushing attack.

And I've said it a couple of times on our show. I'll say it again. I love the way the bills run the ball.

I love watching how in sync their offensive line can be when it's really grooving. And that's even, you know, losing Spencer Brown at one point to injury as well. You know, this, the way that he runs, I hated the fumble for him too, Greg, because the way that he runs and the second effort of that run, I think really embodies what they're all about, which is pushing for that extra in the like, down to down or short yardage spaces and then the ability to hit these explosives from time to time as well. And they were relying on that not only in the run game, but also in the passing game to hit those yards after the catch explosives the only way they really could. And I feel like, you know, with with James cook. And it's,

it's unfortunate to see that, that punch out for him again here on the screen. But with, with James cook, I just feel like he does show how in that play, uh, at the goal line, when, when he's making that second effort, he shows really how Rams defenders were struggling to contain a lot of these plays all night. They, there were a couple of good plays and obviously the splash play here, but There were, especially early on, on some of the bigger runs and then those two explosives from Tyler Johnson, the kitchen run, and then also the, another big explosive James cook run.

Um, there were.

There was maybe like one defender in the area taking a bad angle and missing and missing the tackle and nobody else around to swarm to the ball. And the best defenses we watch in this league are swarming to the ball. And the Bills just had this way of not only creating angles and creating extra space for their run game when they were hitting those explosives, but also, you know, the lack of flooding to the concept really hurt the Rams tonight, too.

And look, Cook is an incredible runner. Fumbles are a huge problem for him. He has 10 fumbles since the start of last season. It's by far the most in the NFL. He has the most fumbles since 2022 in the NFL.

Like by far the most.

I think he has six more maybe than anyone else and four more since the start of last season.

So he is.

in an elite back, but that is a huge problem that kind of knocks him below the rest. But the thing, I'm glad you bring up Ty Johnson there because it's an incredible one-two punch. There's a reason James Cook doesn't really play that much on passing downs. I think you could argue Ty Johnson is the best pure third down back that there is left in the league.

He ends up with 72 yards.

He had the 40-yard catch that you mentioned, but Allen was also looking for him on these checkdowns, and he was making people miss. Ray Davis is their third running back. He had a 31-yard reception in this game. So it was all just dump-offs and running backs, and it's such an interesting way to produce an incredibly efficient offense on the night. And look, Khalil Shakir, who had that one long catch in overtime, if Cam Kitchens hadn't just like gotten his heel and and then Shakir kind of trips on himself we would have had a touchdown in overtime I do want to go through a little bit how this you know game ended so I I am mentioning like the first half of this game we go into halftime it's only 13 to 7 bills it's a few

long drives for the Rams and they only capitalize on one of them they had the missed kick there it wasn't a ton of offense in the first half. And then we just start going back and forth and back and forth. After that Bills touchdown drive that we just heard from with Cook capitalizing, Stafford, who ends up with 383 yards and three touchdowns, just dices the Bills up.

And at this point, the Bills defense looked absolutely gassed. The Rams had a huge advantage in terms of plays. In the first half, about 20 more plays. They still ended with that advantage, 78 plays to 57. And there are open receivers finally down the field in the fourth quarter for the Rams when before everything was very difficult.

He gets them down to the goal line. And again, a coach is tested. with a time management situation. They get the ball right near the goal line with about 20 seconds to go. And Sean McVay decides to not use his last time out. Instead, Stafford gets up to the line of scrimmage. He hands it off to Kyron Williams.

Let's listen.

Need the time. Touchdown.

12, 10.

Stafford ready in the gun. Takes the snap.

Gives to Kyron. He runs it in. Touchdown, LA!

With four seconds left. An extra point can tie it up in force over time.

You think you should have got it for two? I was thinking about it.

I mean, what does Mike Tomlin like to say? Don't live in your fears. Yeah, I mean, I could see it both ways for this specifically. Now, also on the other side, if the Bills were in the same situation, you know, they kick that every time. Their two points other than one have not tonight have not been working all year. But in consideration of the Rams, you know, with Stafford throwing the ball the way that he was, with the Rams moving the ball on the ground the way that he was, Kyron Williams was kind of on a heater at that point, run and pass. He had made a third and seven one-handed catch that was insane right previously in the drive to sort of set up his own touchdown.

Run there.

And it really felt like if you just kept pushing, you could build like this monolithic force. Um, and, and, you know, then you, again, you put it in the hands of a, of a kicker that just is so, is so streaky clearly. So for me, but on the other side, it's like, if I have Matthew Stafford and I'm getting the ball in overtime and Matthew Stafford is playing like this, then I'm going to try to win an overtime. So I can see I can see both sides.

I do think that scoring there sort of absolved him of having that much time taken off the clock. Maybe he didn't want to give Josh Allen eight seconds to pull a Lamar Jackson.

So, I mean, I don't know, Greg. We've seen some crazy stuff the last couple weeks.

It is a results-oriented business, and... I get it. They scored there.

So and he knew like they were running the ball so well and he didn't use a timeout, you know, partly because they want the flexibility to run the ball there. You take the timeout and you get four plays. And instead, you know, it took so long for it to happen. He would have only gotten two plays there. But it gives you the chance to run it on on the first one and then take the time out. So it also that ends well, they had a streak, I believe it said at the bottom of ESPN where they hadn't had a two point play in a long time. And then they did in this game earlier. Stafford didn't get the first one, I think. did get the second one, right?

Or no, he failed on the two-point conversion to Pukunukuwa when it was 20 to 19. So maybe that was sitting in his head. And one of the biggest plays of the game now looking back and one of the best throws of the game was Allen getting away from pressure to hit Dalton Kincaid for a two-point conversion to make it 27 to 20.

And that kind of is the cheat code, right?

Like, don't you think, like, Tonight, so many of those scrambles and a couple of the throws were where they were just like good rushes and you just couldn't get Josh Allen down. So I'm getting on the rush plan a little bit, but a lot of it is just he's impossible or so difficult to take down and he's just making something out of nothing.

Do you know, it was interesting to how both of these teams had similar issues, but at different points of the game.

So like the.

False start penalties really hurt the bills down the back half of the stretch, just really trying to, uh you know capitalize with more points off of some of these drives um and you know the two the two points earlier in the game too and then the ram struggle with the two point the rams opened with a ton of penalties false starts the team's finished with 24 combined penalties which is absolutely insane Um, and then also they, both teams were trying in some ways and particularly in some of those two point attempts to make up for missed extra points, missed field goals, just the way that the game was so lopsided at times it was close, but lopsided in the sense that we had like some odd scores.

We had like 20 to 19.

We had like, you know, these, these one point back and forth that you think an extra point solves all of this, but both teams had had issues.

Rams obviously had worse ones on special teams.

Yeah, it is a good call that Tyler Bass missed a kick, an extra point, as you point out, earlier in the game. And that set up the Rams going for the two that they didn't get. And then, of course, in the end, Matthew Stafford does. Let's talk about the Pukunikua usage. 24 targets for Pukunikua, 17 catches, 138 yards, and.

A touchdown and you know, we we've got our, our new, uh, our new guy editing tonight. I said, Dan, you know, put together like a, a little package of a Puka Nakua catches. And this thing could be 15 minutes long. If you wanted them, a lot of them were short passes early. As I said, Stafford ended up throwing 54 times. Um, they they're missing a little bit of explosiveness, uh, without our guy at tight end. And it felt like it was hard for most of the night. And yet I admired that they stayed patient. And I think the game plan worked because they were trying to wear the Bills down.

And ultimately in the second half, I did think in the second half in overtime, as much as this loss hurts for the Rams, that was easily the best offense that they've had all season.

It's not even close.

It was the second half in overtime was the best that they played after, like you mentioned, some first half mistakes.

Yeah, I think it's a real credit to the Bills' defense here through most of this. You could tell they were worn out by the end, and obviously it makes you feel a lot better when they come out with the win instead of the loss here.

But credit to them.

They played like a zone, sort of a shell-y type of coverage. Their corners kept getting banged up. Christian Benford had the toe issue, CJGJ. banged up, left the game, came back in at multiple points. Maxwell Harrison did not start this game, but was in by the end because of different injuries. And what they were doing was just trying to truncate the Rams offense. They saw that they were going to have to come out in a lot of 12 personnel and nobody's really buying for the most part, the two, two at well field stretching yet, there was one big play where he cleared out the middle for Tyler Higbee, I believe it was. And that was kind of the intent of it, but nobody's really buying, you know, at the, at this time, the, the downfield passing attack, just,

just yet in the second half and especially the fourth quarter, it did start coming alive.

And it was interesting.

A lot of that was, was tight ends because Puka Nakua was basically their underneath guy and, and had a couple of screens too, because they, you know, the stat line looks good to finish. And then you realize it is about, you know, seven yards per play through most of the game. My mental math is not the best, but you know, it is, it is picking and poking underneath and staying patient. When, when the things started really opening up for them, I thought it was interesting. A couple of tight ends who got, you know, in the game, Tyler Higbee had their two, a couple of their biggest gains of the night, Davis Allen, who came up with a crucial third and one catch and, And then I set up a touchdown and then also, you know, it's

all over their blocking surface anyway, but then finally gets another catch and a long catch. I think probably one of the longest of his career, if not the longest. So there was, there was space to be had by the end of the game. but everything looks so difficult really for both of these passing games in the start of this game. Everything looks so difficult. When I wrote on my cards, you know, I love my cards, Greg.

I have so many of them because we had such a long game tonight and you know, I love my cards, but it was like 27, 27.

And I wrote the word fun with two underlines.

Cause that's when, to me, this game really showed us that these are two truly excellent teams that were just going, you know, Punch for punch for each other. Touchdown for touchdown through that period.

Yeah, and I think they're both going to be a little disappointed by their defense. The Bills, how they've played all season. Look, they were up for the fight in the first half and did some things, but I think Sean McVay coming out of halftime was right on.

They basically had.

Like one drive where they shot themselves in the foot, one drive where they didn't have much time at the very end and that he felt good about the offense and you score five touchdowns and you missed two field goals in a relatively low possession game. You're going to feel pretty good. I don't think the Rams are like if there's a problem with them. like the Bills are slow in the back end. Like their linebacker position is not athletic enough. And I don't think their safety position is athletic enough. And the Rams are not quite fast enough and athletic enough to fully take advantage and like hit those big plays until it kind of opened up later in the game. Whereas the Bills are playing without

like you know, a true number one receiver. And they're like getting all their production in the passing game out of the running backs. It's really interesting to think that these are the two best, two of the best offenses in the league. I think they're getting coached up really well. And yet they definitely have their share of limitations. I do want to hear from JB Long one more time on this show, Jordan, before we get out of here.

Devante Adams, who probably like misses just like a little bit those games where Pukunukuwa wasn't there because he was the one getting... like box scores, like 24 targets. He did have two touchdowns tonight, including one that put him a little higher in the record book. Let's listen to Puka, rather Devontae Adams' second touchdown.

In the left half, third down and goal. Stafford looking to punch right back, delivers, end zone, touchdown Devontae Adams! He ties Larry Fitzgerald with his 121st career touchdown reception, sixth all time. His second tonight gives the Rams a chance to tie it with an extra point.

I just don't think like before tonight and including the first half, like Stafford's been accurate this year and he's been making some wonky decisions. So I do think maybe the second half of this game could go a long way because he was feeling it and he had a lot of great throws and just the way he was manipulating the defenders, like he had them scrambling. And that's why I think this loss to go to two and three is going to hurt so much.

It really fits my ultimate agenda with quarterback Island, which is every time we don't have Matthew Stafford on quarterback Island, he then starts playing like an insane person, parentheses complimentary. So it's, I do think that it is the QB Island bump. We saw a couple of guys get it who got pulled off. We saw a couple of guys get their numbers who deserve to be on. No, it was, to me, this game was just flat-out fun through the second half. And I think you saw... very, very obviously and clearly on all over the field for both teams, where their obvious strengths that they will try to roll with for the entire season are where their obvious weaknesses are that.

I don't think are necessarily fixable.

Like for the bills getting healthier on defense is really what's needed, but, but even then, okay. You know, what is, what is the next step forward to, to just kind of containing some of those middle areas or some of those seam areas that you need to contain? you know, you're not going to go against a run pass attack when it, when it's at its best is functioning at the high capacity that the Rams could tonight, similar to the Rams, you know, real concern that the takeaway was great, uh, by Nate lamb and he forced two fumbles actually, uh, the, and then the Rams obviously recovered when Aaron Donald recovered, uh, the second one, but, um, you know, the combination of himself and, and Quentin Lake, there's, there's some bumps there

that showed up in, in the early part of the season. There's some bumps there, uh, tonight, And it also, it was, you know, Jalen Watson not playing fully healthy in the secondary as well. And there was a brutal collision between himself and, and Quentin Lake. It is the, the big gash runs and kind of, what do you do to adjust to that? You are going to face running quarterbacks down the stretch. So, and special teams, I cannot say enough about that. So it's like, I thought all the teams, you know, this entire game in totality, you saw these teams at the peak of their potential powers, maybe minus the bills passing game. And then you saw where their obvious deficiencies are right now, too, which I thought was

really interesting over the course of the game.

And look, these games do come down to players. And Greg Rousseau has been awesome this year. He didn't have a huge night rushing the passer. I think he ended up with four quarterback pressures. which is more than creditable, I would say. None of them were quick, did not have a sack on this night. But he's the guy who, as much as we're killing the Rams special team, maybe it was a lower kick, maybe the blocking wasn't great.

You need one of your best players, like Will Anderson did the other week, to make a play in the game's biggest moment. And Greg Rousseau goes out and makes that play. Josh Allen made play after play after play. Even when James Cook was fumbling, his backups, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson, are picking him up and making a play.

And how about the season that Keon Coleman's having? He only had one catch tonight, but I do want to give the Bills... their credit because they're four and one. It's been a very difficult, you know, schedule to start the season. And they have found a way to beat Detroit. to win in Los Angeles. They rebound from the loss to the Patriots last week. And I think overall, they've done a good job and they're in a good position to improve. So why not listen to Keon Coleman getting in the end zone?

Allen in the shotgun, back to pass.

Fires to the right side.

Wide open Coleman for a touchdown.

There was a rub route and it worked to perfection.

Keon Coleman, agent zero with a go-ahead touchdown for Buffalo.

And that was the moment I was thinking, I hope Jalen Watson's okay after he collides with his teammate.

Yeah, right to the shoulder.

Yeah, that was not great. But also thinking, man, Eric Roberts, our.

our captain here on NFL daily must be having a great time with his son, Austin. They, they were at the game and yes, this is a, a reason to go check out the YouTube. You can see this beautiful young boy enjoying the first special teams play by the bills in this game, the opening kickoff return, and he's clapping and he's got a big smile on his face.

And yeah, Bill's, Mafia was out in force in L.A. It was so loud when each team had the ball.

And I.

I know maybe Ramos fans don't love that, but I actually think that's a great atmosphere when it's like that and it's 50-50 and it's so loud and Stafford's trying to quiet the crowd.

It's like, no, those are the Bills fans yelling, man. They're not going to be quiet.

And so very cool that Austin and Eric got to enjoy that one while we got to just, you know, chill on the couch and enjoy it.

Hope you enjoyed it, Jordan.

Yeah, I enjoyed it. I thought it was a really fun, really great game. And I do love that, you know, his first Bills game happens to be Against a team whose special teams unit Eric gets to hear me complain about all the time. So it really seemed fitting all around for all of us here at NFL Daily.

Just like a classic. One of the most entertaining games of the season. Certainly one of the best primetime games we've gotten to cover on the season.

And a really important one.

The Bills get to 4-1 and they're in a crowded mix at the top of the AFC. And they stay in first place in the AFC East.

And the Rams are now.

At a point at two and three where, OK, you are three games back in your division, which San Francisco is already three and oh, they went through the division and they swept everyone the first time around. You lost your first division game. That's a lot of ground to make up with only 12 games to go.
