Coming up on NFL Report, no longer perfect. The Niners and Chiefs entered Week 7 undefeated, both squads suffering losses. What to make of what happened and where both go after this. And then there was one undefeated. Minnesota continues to flex its muscles on defense. Are they Super Bowl contenders?
The Giants? They're finding ways to win. How much respect do they deserve? Scott Hansen's got those answers to some burning questions. And in the NFC East, the Cowboys and Eagles, major questions after rough starts to the season. How can a Monday night win help propel both of those teams? Our expert tells you what this game is going to come down to. Hi, I'm Mike Hamill. Welcome to a brand new edition of NFL Report. Our good friends Trevor Sikama and Scott Hansen are going to be by in just a bit. A closer look at the Monday night matchup in just a few moments, but no better place to start with what was a pretty entertaining week number seven on Sunday. A lot of drama. And quite frankly, maybe some surprises, especially if you are a fan of
the San Francisco 49ers. Perfect on the year heading into this game. This is a different Atlanta team when Michael Penix is healthy. How about that strike to Drake London? Penix, three touchdowns off of four San Francisco turnovers. Niners, by the way, six total turnovers in the first six games. Brock Purdy has got a touchdown call. Use check. This made it actually a six-point game. More from Purdy, but not the good kind. He's actually done a pretty nice job taking care of the football so far this season, but gets picked off here. One of two interceptions. This a costly one. Kendall Daniels with the INT. It's the Falcons victorious. Kyle Shanahan not exactly thrilled.
Anytime you have four turnovers like that and you get zero, it's real tough to win.
I thought we had some.
I don't know about the amount of penalties, but the timing of some penalties. Just keeping them on the field, giving them some big plays, especially when we have them behind the chains and stuff with those illegal contacts or holdings, whatever they're called.
But too sloppy to win.
He's right about that. A lot of injuries to overcome as well. Kansas City, how about the homecoming? Kenneth Walker, revenge game back in Seattle after being named the Super Bowl MVP. And this one, by the way, he was stuffed. 36 yards and just 14 carries in this game. But really the offense in its entirety. Patrick Mahomes, some problems in this game for this KC offense. Just the second time in his career. that his team didn't score a touchdown.
Last time, by the way, that happened, you see this interception here. 2023, they lost to Denver 24-9. All field goals, for what it's worth, they didn't win the Super Bowl that year. Sam Darnold, he's got a favorite target. JSN, you got to be kidding me, man. They would go and review this thing. Real time, it looked like a touchdown.
I'm not going to lie, although I was sitting on my couch. Easy for me to say. They did, in fact, rule it a touchdown. 150 for JSN. to go along with that score and helping me win in my fantasy league. Just saying. Emmanuel Wilson, 21-yard touchdown. I know some questions about the run game, but Wilson in this one, 100 yards, 24 carries. Second time he has hit the 100 mark in his career. Kind of weird to talk about a KC squad not scoring points. Mahomes, looking for more answers to some questions.
I think the biggest takeaway is if you don't come ready to play, it's just you can get your tail kicked in this league. And no matter if you're 5-0 or whatever it is, every week's a new week, and every team can do this. And so you have to have that mindset of when you go throughout the week of practice of we need our best football that Sunday, and I have to do the same as well. And so we've got a young team. It'll be about how we respond from this, obviously with the big game coming up this next week. So let's get rolling and get ourselves ready for that.
He's right about that. And for a little bit more on both the Niners and the Kansas City Chiefs, our good friend Trevor Sikama is with us. You can catch him on NFL Pro. He hangs out with me on Wednesdays on the Fantasy Show. He's going to be on Game Day Preview to talk Monday Night Football with just a bit. Hey, we could talk football. Just curious, me or Brett, your favorite co-host is? Oh, come on. That's the first question?
Well, I'm going to go with you because you asked it to me. If Brett asked it to me, maybe it's a little bit different. But I don't want to pay the consequences since we're on the show here right now live.
So I'm going to go with you. Of course you. It's got to be you. 100%. Smart man, because we're going to be hanging a little bit later. But take me through this, man. Who are you more concerned about, Kansas City or San Francisco? I'm more worried about the San Francisco 49ers. And the reason why, yes, it's the offensive injuries, because it felt like this past week it was just, okay, that was it.
That was the straw that broke the camel's back. That was too much for them to be able to overcome. But on the defensive side, I have more tangible worries, I think, and that comes down to their lack of pass rush. The book is out on Michael Penix right now.
Pressure him. Get after him. Make him uncomfortable. Get him out of the pocket.
And even with a 34% blitz rate this past game, they only got a 17% pressure percentage against the Falcons in this game. Now, the Falcons' offensive line is playing really well this season, so I want to give them their credit. But the Niners, they were undefeated going into this one. We talk about them at the top of the division, a favorite for the Super Bowl for how they have played to start the season today. You're not going to win the Super Bowl with pass rush like that. Now, Nick Bosa has been out for the last four to five weeks. And so when he comes back, it's naturally going to be better. But even Nick Bosa, he's just one player. I'm worried about that defensive line because it was a pass rush issue for them last year. And
this year, it has certainly been much of the same. And so that's why the Niners worry me more than the Chiefs right now.
Yeah, by the way, I'm actually glad that you talked about the defensive issues. I think a lot of fans have been pointing to their injuries recently. on the offensive side, and certainly Bosa being hurt is a factor here. This has been a theme the last couple seasons, not just the injuries, That's kind of what we associate the Niners with.
But D-line, getting pressure on the quarterback, it is something that this team probably needs to address. Trevor, more from you in just a moment as we once again focus on a Monday night matchup in just a bit. But made reference to it a little bit earlier, Kyler Murray and his squad, they are undefeated, matching up against the Colts. Now, it's not the offense, the defense from Minnesota that's carried this team, but how about this? TJ Atkinson, Kyler throws for 150 and that touchdown. The pressure on Daniel Jones in this game, man, fast and furious. These Vikings were coming at him, gets picked off. How about the old guy?
Harrison Smith, 40th career interception for him, planting that ball on that 40 yard line. And why not? Congrats to him in year number 15, making 11 straight wins for the Vikings going back to last year. Here's Kyler. Honestly, I feel like we moved the ball well today.
Um, And nobody wants to hear that. But as far as offensively as well, in that locker room, we've got to put the ball in the end zone. At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to. Again, I told you my confidence will never waver in the group.
That we have.
Again, I think that we've just got to put the ball in the end zone. I mean, I know it comes down to execution. Today, there's things that we can do better. Run game, complete execution in the pass game. But as far as moving the ball, I feel like we did that. Again, we just got to end the drive with touchdowns instead of kicking field goals.
I would agree with that. I don't think this team is close to reaching their peak of their powers. We know defensively it has carried Minnesota. They are the last undefeated team in the NFL. Something tells me there's another gear offensively for Kyler Murray, and this offense could be scary. Scott Hansen coming up in just a bit. We'll find out if he thinks that they are Super Bowl contenders. Meanwhile, on the flip side, Daniel Jones in that football game, 13 of 22 passing, 108 yards. He lost 44 yards on four sacks. Man, he has been under a whole lot of pressure. Colt head coach Shane Steichen doubled down today, saying that Daniels is still the team's starting quarterback. Wondering if there's going to be some trades around this team
and maybe some talent leaving. Meanwhile, Adam Schefter putting this out on social media ahead of the Monday night matchup between the Eagles and the Cowboys. Activated. This is big. Landon Dickerson. They've needed some help on the offensive line. Both of those, or excuse me, three of those guys getting activated from injured reserve from tonight's matchup. Meanwhile, Dak Prescott, you see him getting ready for this game. Some struggles offensively over the last two. In fact, this is a team that's only scored 29 total points. Over these last two games, both of them, they have actually lost. You got two squads right now in this division, both sitting at two and four on the year. Something's got to give.
And Tanner McKee will once again get that start. Trevor, when I think about this division and I think about these two teams, they were the favorites to go and win at this point. How does Dallas turn around their season with a Monday Night Road win? Well, it's obviously about the defense. The defense has to play a lot better. Now, you're getting some guys back from injury. That's going to be key for them in the secondary. And then DeMarvin Overshawn at the linebacker level as well. And it just feels as though a lot of their problems have been chemistry-related, communication-related.
It's just... Mess-ups here and there, big ones that we've had this season. I don't think that overall they've been playing.
Terrible, but it's just bad plays at the worst times for this team. And with these guys coming back from injury, I've got some faith that this side of the ball could be a lot better because, remember, when you look at the offensive side of things, I mean, they're top five, if not top three, if.
Not number one in baseball.
Plays per drive, yards per drive, points per drive this season. I mean, this Cowboys offense is cooking. They are doing well enough not just to win football games, but be that top team in this division. It's just got to come down to the defense cannot give up these catastrophic plays. They have to be so much better.
The floor.
Of this defense has to be higher week in and week out. Quinny Williams has talked about that himself. And even though Quinn has been out there, we know that he hasn't been playing as well as he could. And we've seen him play in the past, but I just think it's overall the unit as a whole, it's taking a little bit more time here with Christian Parker as the defensive coordinator, but they've got a chance with some key guys coming back in Monday Night Football against the Eagles to really right that ship in the right direction here starting tonight.
You know, last year this was a problem, Trevor. What makes it worse is there's an upgrade personnel-wise, at least on paper. Heading into this season where we felt like, hey, this Dallas defense, man, they're not going to be one of the worst in the league. Even if they're in the middle of the pack with this offense, still got a great opportunity to go and win this division. All not lost. Need to get it done on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. We got more on this matchup game day preview still to come here. on the NFL channel. Trevor, more from you, of course, a little bit later. And how about this? Congratulations, Jeffrey Lurie, the CEO of the Eagles, inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame,
is going to be honored at halftime later tonight. Fly, Eagles, fly. I mean, when you're honoring your CEO at halftime, you got to go and win that football game, don't you? I would imagine that that would be the case. Checking in on the Giants and the Texans. Kim Scadaboo, last week, No touches. Message sent. Message received. He ran angry this week.
17 carries, 124 yards. Give me the backflip. And that touchdown, that put up the G-men 21-14. C.J. Stroud, you knew there'd be some comeback. And Stroud, who's played well this season, going to the end zone. Xavier Hutchinson. CJ passed for 153, two touchdowns. That tied the game at 21. We'll take you to overtime here. Devin Singletary, a former Texan, by the way, taking off to the races. 30 yards, season high, 188 rushing yards allowed by this Houston defense. JJ McCarthy gets his first win in his first start with the G-men.
And sometimes celebrations can get a little out of control. Harbaugh taking a slip and a fall. You know the questions were coming about that.
As I was going down, all I could think was, like, I mean, I just felt like a total non-athlete over the hill, washed up, you know. I was just, you know, I don't know, man. I just felt so weak, so pathetic. But once we were on the ground laughing and enjoying the moment and celebrating the football joy moment of the touchdown run, it just made all sense.
It made all sense in the world, so... All right, there's a lot to unpack from a Giants perspective, especially the unathletic comments from John Harbaugh. Our friend, host of Red Zone, Scott Hanson's with us. We got three burning questions. There's a lot to unpack here. We could talk some football, little known fact, because we don't get to do a lot of stuff together. Locker mates. Right next door to each other. I know, I know.
I saw that suit before you had it on today. Always looking sharp.
I appreciate that. All right. So let's start with this first question, because to me, the Giants are a team that maybe aren't getting enough respect considering what they've done. They're winning games, Scott, that they hadn't been able to win previously.
The first place New York Giants put some respect on the name right there. So as the host of Red Zone, I get to watch not only every touchdown from every game, but.
Pretty much every throw from every game.
J.J.
McCarthy made two of the five best throws that I saw yesterday. I mean, he was getting after that Houston Texans defense, which didn't turn out to be what we thought that Houston Texans defense was going to be. Nonetheless, the quarterback position, they thought it was a disaster in New York after the injury to Jackson Dart. Looks like he's come in and he might be what they've been looking for.
Meanwhile, he's got number one to throw. I mean, look at That throw right there, that was otherworldly.
Malik Neighbors is blossoming into an absolute top 10 wide receiver in this league, maybe top five wide receiver.
Combine that with.
The fact that Cam Scadaboo apparently got the message that John Harbaugh wanted to send him. The whole running back room contributed. Singletary with the walk-off here. The defense is playing complimentary football. Abdul Carter doesn't get the sack numbers, but pressure-wise, Abdul Carter's coming.
And then even.
They've got the quarterback sneak, the short yardage game down. Jameis, the specialist. And did you hear the cadence? Hut one, hut two, hike. Let's go back to fifth grade football. It's good for the Giants right now.
I'm actually glad that you brought that up because I caught you guys doing that on Red Zone. I have three monitors. You're up on one of them. And I grew up a Giants fan, so I had that game up. And I heard that call a couple minutes later. I'm hearing it on Red Zone, which is pretty cool. Vikings, an undefeated squad. Only team in the NFL. Super Bowl contender? Uh, remind me what wins championships. The old adage is defense. Uh-huh.
And they've got that defense. I mean, are you kidding me?
Just a little over 12 points per game allowed so far. And it's not like we're three weeks into the season. We're a month and a half in right now. This is the best defense in football. 21 sacks. That's tied for the best in the NFL. Only 253 yards per game the Vikings are giving up. That's second best in the NFL. Dallas Turner, number 15, the former number one pick.
They've still got Harrison Smith there making plays. Dallas Turner has blossomed into a megastar there. Basically, if the Vikings offense can score two touchdowns a game, 14 points, they've got to feel solid.
It goes back to that.
You remember the Ravens defense, the Super Bowl defense from 2000, Ray Lewis, all that. Trent Dilfer, the quarterback of the offense of that team, told his wife at the dinner table, honey, if we can score 10 points a game, we're going to win the Super Bowl. Kyler Murray and Justin Jefferson and the offense ought to be feeling like 14 is the magic number. 17, and we might not lose a game this year. Obviously, they'll get tripped up at some point.
I think they're a Super Bowl contender if for no other reason than the other teams that you look at in the NFC. San Francisco, they just lost by double digits in their first loss of the year. The Giants, love them, but there's still question marks about the Giants.
Chicago, solid in the division.
They've already played head-to-head. Seattle, that's a three-loss team. Why not the Vikings out of the NFC, at least what we know right now?
In that conversation, you mentioned two other teams, Seattle being one of them. They take out Kansas City. The Niners, they were one of those undefeated squads. They obviously lose to Atlanta. More impressive, the Falcons win against Atlanta at home or what the Seattle Seahawks did against Kansas City?
Give me the 12s in my time. I mean, we just talked about Minnesota defense. The Seattle Seahawks defense against Patrick Mahomes, against Kenneth Walker III yesterday, absolutely sensational.
Harassed Mahomes all day.
He was only 19 of 33. Kenneth Walker was looking like an MVP candidate coming into this game. Of course, the whole backstory with his days with Seattle and whatnot. Seven yards was Kenneth Walker's longest run against the Seattle defense. And they weren't bringing extra pressure or anything like that.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs did not get to the red zone yesterday. It's never happened in Patrick Mahomes' NFL career as a starter. I would dare say it never happened when he was at Texas Tech. I think he could go to White House High School in Texas.
Where he played high school football.
He probably got to the red zone in every single game, not yesterday. And then you've got a guy who might be better at his job than everyone else in the NFL right now. JSN, well, Cooper Cubs still delivering some for them right now. But Jackson Smith and Jigba, buck 50 and a touchdown. The only negative for the Seahawks yesterday, Darnold had a red zone interception, but even still, they overcame that. Seattle Seahawks, I know they got three losses, but they are still absolutely a team to contend with.
I was impressed yesterday. Yeah, that defense to me is the best in the NFL, despite the fact that you can make the case, obviously, for Minnesota.
Yeah.
When they're rolling, and if Sam Darnold takes care of that football.
And with the crowd noise in Seattle, it's a whole different dynamic as well.
It was just bonkers there. The 12s were raining very, very loud. Awesome to have you with us. Great to be with you. If I have to borrow one of your ties, is that okay?
Sure.
I'll just keep the quarter zip. I love that. All right, keep in mind, I made reference to the fact that Scott's doing Red Zone. It is the soundtrack to most of our Sundays. You can get an NFL Plus premium. You got Red Zone. You can watch every touchdown every Sunday afternoon during the regular season. We got game replays, not to mention you can track advanced analytics powered by next-gen stats with NFL Pro. You can sign up today at plus.nfl.com slash fast. Terms and conditions apply. And we'll keep the highlights rolling here. Cincinnati and Baltimore. No Lamar Jackson.
Third straight game is missed because of that ankle injury. Joe Burrow and company. These dudes got shut out coming off a bye in that first half. Something woke them up in the second half. Tee Higgins. Six catches, 148 yards. Burrow again to chase. Burrow throws for almost 300, four touchdowns in this one. Cincinnati scored TDs on its first five possessions of the second half. Here's Jamar Chase on what happened and that conversation in the locker room at halftime.
Well, I was pretty angry coming into halftime.
I didn't like how we played.
You know what I'm saying?
It was a lot of... We had 15 plays, maybe two or three possessions. And it didn't go our way at all. We had opportunities to get the ball out of our hands. Joe was getting too much pressure. And, you know, I came in here screaming, saying, somebody got to make a play for us.
Somebody got to make a play.
And I told our offense, we can't look at our defense the whole time. We got to step this up and make something work.
Ravens, by the way, first team in 76 years to be up at least 13 points at halftime and lose by 20.
Ouch.
Keeping in the division here at Steelers. In Paris against the Saints, Aaron Rodgers, Darnell Washington, who just seems to be bigger than everyone else when he's out on that football field. Passing touchdown 540, passing Peyton Manning, third most in NFL history. Rodgers, check this out, using the wheels on a third and six, scrambling for that first down.
He's fired up, man. His teammates were fired up. They were loving it. In fact, after the game on that run, he said, quote, I think because I'm so much less athletic than I used to be, it actually fires up the guys even more. I would say so. Not to mention when Cam Hayward gives you a little bit of bling, you're going to have to rock it. It feels a little Kirk Cousins-esque, but when you're coming from Paris, I don't know if that stuff is new. Maybe it is, maybe it's not. But Rodgers, I got to tell you, looking pretty sharp there with some of those chains. All right, back here on NFL Report. I was so jacked up for this game. Packers, Lions, you got a Green Bay squad that was rolling. Detroit coming off the bye. People
questioning their defense. No one questioning their offense, though. Goff to Jamo. Five catches, 91 yards, two touchdowns in this game for Jamison Williams. All right, on a fourth and one from the 24, under five minutes to go here. Dan Campbell went for it. They didn't get it. That would lead to this. Trey Smack, a 35-yard field goal.
No good. Wide right. That was a problem. And then it was picture perfect the other way if you're a Lions fan. Milking that clock all the way down to zero is Jake Bates. 22-yard field goal through the uprights. The Lions get the win. They host the Vikings on Sunday. But fans in Detroit, just savor it.
You guys, that whole game, that whole first half, second half, man, you talk about playing sticky, going after the football. Violet's defense, that was outstanding. We did another one. We're one and only division, man, and we got Minnesota to walk in. You can't actually. That's right.
You're right.
We are getting on to Minnesota. So when you guys come back in the door, we are ready to go.
Break it down.
Let's go.
Hey, if we're going to go where we want to go, we keep stacking these wins out, boys. Keep stacking. Keep that momentum.
We'll do anything.
Dude, I know I'm not the only one. I love Dan Campbell, man. So much fun. Meanwhile, Sean McVay, his squad's lost two straight games. Feeling a little bit of pressure here. Needed a win in the worst way. Matthew Stafford helping deliver that to Puka. A Vegas native, by the way. Eight catches and that touchdown for Nakua. Stafford, by the way, 195 yards, three scores. He actually became the franchise career passing leader. That's Blake Corm for a four-yard touchdown. Four straight losses now for this Vegas squad.
A little bit of a relief for Matthew Stafford and company. Are we going to see Fernando as the team's starting quarterback?
I want to let you guys know that Kirk is our starting quarterback. There is no controversy there. He's playing at a very high level, and he's got to continue to do that for us to win, and we've got to keep helping all the areas around him. Eventually, Fernando is going to play football. We have a plan. We don't have a timeline for that. Kirk's playing really well, and we're in the hunt. It's really important that we keep playing really well behind him and continue to develop Fernando.
But Fernando is going to play at some point. It's not going to be this week.
You can quiet that conversation. Time for some quick hits. And we get you caught up on Jadarian Price. Been talking about the Seattle run game. That 21-day practice window opens up this week. No word just yet on that status for Monday Night Football against the Bears. Some more Seahawks news. Charles Cross suffered an ankle injury last night.
High ankle sprain. He's going to miss some time. That usually will cost you a couple weeks. And as Ian made reference to, we'll see how the rehab goes. ends up going. They certainly need him on that offensive line. All right, check this out. Ian also putting this out there. Packer, Sanderson, Ryan actually left Sunday's matchup with an ankle injury. Also believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain. Good news, those x-rays were negative. So as you can see here, depending on who you are, those high ankle sprains can certainly cost you a ton of time. Maybe it's four to six weeks. Watch this one in real time. Aaron Jones, day-to-day with that knee injury, got aggravated on Sunday, so I'm having to limp off the football field. Came out
the game, though, relatively clean to this Minnesota squad. Once again, the only undefeated team in the NFL. All right, time for one more thing. This is kind of cool, man. You've been watching the Houston Texans. You know the story. Their wide receiver, Tank Delt, dealt with a lot of injuries. First action in almost 700 days recorded. How about this?
That first grab, a 43-yard catch against the Giants. In a lot of ways, that relationship with Dell and CJ Stroud, good to see those dudes healthy and out on that football field. All right, we got game day preview. It's coming up in like two minutes, which means I need to hustle to get up to the other studio. We got you covered here on Monday Night Football here on the NFL channel.
