[SPEAKER_00]: If you've been trying to stop your dog from doing anything, polling, barking, jumping, etc. [SPEAKER_00]: You are missing the whole picture, the big picture. [SPEAKER_00]: If you want your dog to stop doing something, the answer is typically going to be asking them to do something instead.
[SPEAKER_00]: So oftentimes, dog owners, my clients, [SPEAKER_00]: who I work with on the regular, online in person. [SPEAKER_00]: They want to stop their dog from jumping. [SPEAKER_00]: They want to stop their dog from barking. [SPEAKER_00]: They want to stop their dog from pulling. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is something I've been talking about a long time.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the way that I've really started to develop these ideas is a little bit different now as this idea and this philosophy matures. [SPEAKER_00]: If your dog is pulling you on the leash, you guys have already known, teach your dog how to heal, right? [SPEAKER_00]: If your dog is barking, teach them to leave it.
[SPEAKER_00]: If your dog is barking at the front door, teach them to place. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't think the overall goal is to stop pulling forever, stop barking forever, stop brushing the door forever. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that that's [SPEAKER_00]: sustainable or realistic. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that it's realistic to be building robots.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you're an everyday dog owner and you have a dog and you want your dog to stop doing the things that cause stress in your life. [SPEAKER_00]: And that makes sense to us. [SPEAKER_00]: I want my dog to stop doing something. [SPEAKER_00]: But just know, anytime that you are hit with this idea in your head that you have to stop something, the rebuttals should always be asked something instead.
[SPEAKER_00]: If your dog is doing something, you want a, a behavior you want to stop, ask them to do something instead, and that will solve 99% of people's issues. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, the common things that I see as a dog trainer is pulling on the leash, jumping, reacting, barking, etc. [SPEAKER_00]: So instead of stopping something, understand that they need to know what you want them to do alternatively.
[SPEAKER_00]: because your dog walking faster than you is natural and normal. [SPEAKER_00]: That's going to happen. [SPEAKER_00]: Your dog gets four legs we have two. [SPEAKER_00]: Your dog barking is natural and normal. [SPEAKER_00]: Me wearing a breath strip up here because I can't breathe in the morning.
[SPEAKER_00]: Natural and normal. [SPEAKER_00]: But just know that these things are normal for dogs to do, their animals, somebody comes to the front door and I would actually be pretty weird if your dog didn't care when people came to the front door, in my opinion, right? [SPEAKER_00]: They just, I would think my dog was sick.
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody came to my front door and they just look. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's really frustrating to see dog owners struggle so much with something so easy. [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why people are struggling so much is because they're looking in the wrong spaces [SPEAKER_00]: to help their dog.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're hiring dog trainers to help them stop something or they're looking online or they're asking chat to you. [SPEAKER_00]: How do I stop my dog from pulling? [SPEAKER_00]: And you were really looking in the wrong places and we're really looking for something that isn't realistic or even fair for you or your dog.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whenever you are hit with, I want to stop my dog from doing anything. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, for an example, if your dog is reacting on the leash and you want to stop reacting, [SPEAKER_00]: ask them to do something else, ask them to heal. [SPEAKER_00]: Nine times out of ten if a dog is reacting, they're breaking a heal, they're in front of you, they're pulling.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're barking, right? [SPEAKER_00]: So does your dog have a leave-it-commend? [SPEAKER_00]: No, not really. [SPEAKER_00]: I've never, I just wanted to stop reacting though, that that's not how it works. [SPEAKER_00]: That's like going to a personal trainer and you say, hey, I want to lose 50 pounds.
[SPEAKER_00]: Give me the pill. [SPEAKER_00]: Give me this. [SPEAKER_00]: Give me that. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not how it works. [SPEAKER_00]: You want to become more financially stable. [SPEAKER_00]: I want a hundred thousand dollars in my bank. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not how it works. [SPEAKER_00]: You can't just ask for something like that and it gets done.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think dog owners desperately search for that answer that quick fix and with dog training. [SPEAKER_00]: There is no quick fix. [SPEAKER_00]: Now there's things that you can do quickly and see results quickly. [SPEAKER_00]: However, you have to understand that you're not going to be able to stop your dog ever from barking ever again, from pulling ever again, from reacting ever again.
[SPEAKER_00]: The goal for you as a dog owner is simply to understand what can you do when your dog is doing something you don't want, what can you ask your dog to do alternatively? [SPEAKER_00]: You will be burning your tires in the mud, frustrated, spending money, time and time again, taking course after course, trying to figure out how do you stop your dog from doing something?
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's one of the things I talk about in all my courses. [SPEAKER_00]: I go look, my least, you know, my master of the walk course, one of the first things I say, we're not going to stop your dog from pulling. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to teach your dog how to walk nicely. [SPEAKER_00]: And if more people understood, [SPEAKER_00]: this concept and this philosophy, dog owners would be saving time and money and dogs would be getting fix and stopping the behavior much faster.
[SPEAKER_00]: So again, I wanna reiterate, there is no quick fix to a lot of stuff in life, but I find so many dog owners frustrated, spending money, spending time on stopping stuff and I can't say enough, you should really be auditing what you want your dog to do alternatively. [SPEAKER_00]: So again, when somebody calls me, and I do my online consulting, or you work with me in person, they say, ah, Tom, my dog reacts at people when we go out for a walk, my dog reacts to other dogs.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know that that's the pain point, and I know that that's the frustration. [SPEAKER_00]: But my question usually back is, honestly, what do you want them to do instead? [SPEAKER_00]: And it usually stops people in their tracks and they stare at me and they go, well, I don't want them to bark.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, do you have a command for your dog not to bark? [SPEAKER_00]: No, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, dogs are animals. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be naturally suspicious. [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be inquisitive. [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be excited. [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to get stimulated.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very few dogs are neutral and stable enough to go out and just see another dog and be like, I don't care that that thing exists. [SPEAKER_00]: See another person after a bad experience, see another person when they're really excited to see people or they're fearful of people on the other end of this spectrum and go, you know what?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care that that exists. [SPEAKER_00]: So having a very neutral dog comes a lot down to genetics, stability, and just getting down right lucky. [SPEAKER_00]: But I really want dog owners to understand that the fundamentals of actual pet ownership dog training, so there's many different types of dog training.
[SPEAKER_00]: I specialize in pet owners. [SPEAKER_00]: I work with pet owners, trying to solve problems and decrease stress in the dog's life and in the human's life in the owner's life. [SPEAKER_00]: And I've been doing this for over a decade and the thing that I've been seeing in all these different countries that I work in in Europe and UK and all over the North America Australia is people always want the same goal they want to stop something but not too many people understand.
[SPEAKER_00]: that what their dog is doing is pretty natural and they don't have the foundation or the skills or the levers to pull to help their dog be successful. [SPEAKER_00]: Again, my dog is pulling me on the leash. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm getting dragged all over the place. [SPEAKER_00]: Tom, what do I do?
[SPEAKER_00]: How do I stop this? [SPEAKER_00]: What do you want your dog to do alternatively? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I don't want them to pull me. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but really break it down. [SPEAKER_00]: What does that mean for your dog? [SPEAKER_00]: That means your dog walking in a certain [SPEAKER_00]: at a certain cadence, at a certain pace when you say so, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: They have four legs you have, too. [SPEAKER_00]: That has to be intentional for them to stop and walk in slow motion, like it has to be purposeful. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not just something that you get unless you've got an older dog or maybe a small little chihuahua, but still. [SPEAKER_00]: when you want your dog to walk next to you, it has to be purposeful.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to be able to say here, here's what I want you to do alternatively. [SPEAKER_00]: So guys, I ask you this. [SPEAKER_00]: Anytime that you are approached in your head, doesn't matter if you're a dog trainer or you're a dog owner with the idea that you wanna stop your dog from doing something.
[SPEAKER_00]: You really should be asking your dog a question, and you should be asking yourself a question of, does my dog know what I want them to do alternatively? [SPEAKER_00]: And again, if you go into a dog training facility, you hire a dog trainer online, you use AI, you use YouTube, you use TikTok, whatever you want to use.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all going to be something that you can do right now. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, of course, there's a lot of different things that I see my client struggle with still. [SPEAKER_00]: Body positioning, hand positioning, what they're saying, their voice inflection, what side the dog is on, what side the dog isn't on, what equipment you're using.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of different things. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying you don't need a dog trainer because you still do. [SPEAKER_00]: But what I'm saying is, is you're chasing the wrong thing, and you're not being fair to yourself, and you're not being fair to your dog, and that's why you're still struggling with your dog.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's because you're trying to stop something that you don't have any business trying to stop. [SPEAKER_00]: And your dog is instinctually doing it. [SPEAKER_00]: Your dog pulling, reacting, barking, lunging, going to the front door, jumping. [SPEAKER_00]: These are all instincts that dogs do.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't just, these are all created behaviors. [SPEAKER_00]: They do it out of instinct, just like with humans. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we learn how to live our lives when we're babies and we grow up, right? [SPEAKER_00]: That's instinct. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's important for you to understand.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ask your dog to do something when you want to stop them from doing something else. [SPEAKER_00]: and you will change the game with your relationship with your dog, you will change the game in your dog training, and if you're a dog trainer, this will change the game for you and your clients.
[SPEAKER_00]: Send this video to all your clients before they come in, so they have a good concept that we are not going to be stopping your dog from being a dog. [SPEAKER_00]: We are not going to be telling a fish not to swim. [SPEAKER_00]: We are simply going to be teaching your dog the skill sets that we want them to do alternatively to the things that they are doing as [SPEAKER_00]: That's really it.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's simple. [SPEAKER_00]: This is the NoBadDogs podcast. [SPEAKER_00]: Make sure you subscribe if you're on YouTube. [SPEAKER_00]: Make sure you hit that follow if you're on Spotify. [SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully this is helpful. [SPEAKER_00]: Talk to you guys in the next one. [SPEAKER_00]: Peace.
