On August 14, 1480, atop a lonely hilltop in Otranto, Italy, 813 Christians were given a choice by invading Ottomans: convert to Islam or die. They refused—and were beheaded, their archbishop sawn in half to shouts of "Allahu Akbar," as enslaved families were forced to watch. This was no act of "radicals," but the command of Sultan Muhammad II, the head of Sunni Islam—echoed centuries later by ISIS. Their skulls still line Otranto's cathedral, a chilling reminder that the creed and methods of jihad have never changed.
