The Ice Disc and the Glove No One Could Explain
Cold dread: a perfect four-foot ice disc floated in a sheltered cove of Callum Lake in early April, and a single work glove lay palm-up frozen inside it - yet the lake had not frozen in April in living memory. How did solid ice form there, trap a glove, and what does the temperature record reveal about that night?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the moment Dean Osborne found the disc to the local unraveling that followed, following the people, places, and small details that refuse to add up. What exactly happened on the night of April seventh into the morning of April ninth?
Person: Dean Osborne
Person: Larry Cox
Person: Bernard Fitch
Date: April 7-9, 2014
Location: Callum Lake, north shore
- A disc of ice roughly four feet across floated about thirty feet from the dock on April 9, 2014.
- Dean Osborne drifted six feet backward in his boat after seeing the glove and photographed the disc before calling the sheriff.
- Larry Cox found the same disc the afternoon of April 8, stepped onto it with a three-foot pine branch test, and his left glove stayed behind when he stood.
- Larry had visited Bernard Fitch the night of April 7, stayed past midnight because Bernard was feverish, and returned in the dark with one boot soaked from a rotted dock board.
- A trotline float was visible frozen into a thicker section of ice about twenty feet along from the disc.
