South Korea's Moon Jae-in and the Inter-Korean Diplomacy Gamble

Moon Jae-in, the progressive president who took office after Park Geun-hye's impeachment, bet his presidency on reconciliation with North Korea. This episode traces Moon's journey from human rights lawyer to Blue House, his Sunshine Policy revival, the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics diplomatic breakthrough, and the three inter-Korean summits with Kim Jong-un. We explore the collapse of the Singapore summit, the dismantling of the Tongchang-ri missile site, the symbolic significance of the Panmunjom Declaration, and the domestic backlash that ultimately derailed Moon's peace initiative. How did a president born in a refugee camp during the Korean War come closer than any predecessor to peace? And why did it fail? Lucas and Luna examine the costs, controversies, and lingering legacy of South Korea's most audacious diplomatic gamble.
