The Forgotten Women of the Korean War

While the economic miracle and industrialization of South Korea dominate historical narratives, a quieter, more intimate story unfolds in the shadows of the conflict. This episode explores the lives of comfort women during the Korean War, focusing on figures like Lee Yong-soo and the broader community of survivors who sought justice decades later. We examine how the trauma of sexual violence was suppressed for years, buried beneath the urgent demands of nation-building and anti-communist solidarity. The conversation traces the journey from silence to public testimony, highlighting the pivotal role of the Wednesday Demonstrations that began in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. Through personal accounts and historical context, we uncover how these women’s courage reshaped the discourse on war crimes and gender-based violence in East Asia, challenging official histories and demanding accountability from both state and society.
