The Volume.

A Sunday night podcast. The Colin Coward Podcast presented by Bud Light. Easy to drink. Easy to enjoy. Heavyweight fight. We could spend 30 minutes on this. Seattle falls to the Niners. 32-29. 38 points off turnovers. It was not. That aesthetically appealing, you could argue, but I think it just added to the drama. From the very beginning, there was turnovers and fumbles. By the way, you go on the internet and people are beating up on Darnold and Purdy.

There are 10 defensive players in this game that are either going to be in the Hall of Fame, close to Hall of Fame, or ascending toward it like Devon Witherspoon. The quality of talent San Francisco has. I was thinking about this, John. Mike Evans will make the Hall of Fame. McCaffrey will. Kittle will. Trent Williams will. Shanahan. I watched Fred Warner. Obviously, he's great. But it's like it's older and it's more brittle. there is so much talent on this field. So my, my takeaway to start is you're not going to play. Listen, this is a heavyweight fight.

Both teams land punches. I mean, Fred Warner's punching footballs out. You know, pretty has a bad pick. Seattle fumbles in the end zone. Like this is what happens when great physical teams play. This game looks so much more physical than any game I watched today that In the end, I really did think San Francisco deserved a win. I thought they got kind of a– we'll get to this in a bit, but the grounding call was horrible. But in the end, I felt like San Francisco was the better team. Your thoughts?

Well, I wrote down this felt more like a January 20th game than a mid-October game. This felt like the second round, like you said, in terms of physicality. The 49ers got all the turnovers. it felt like you can't blow this game up there. They had lost the last two games, 13-3 and 41-6, but those games, the 13-3 game wasn't close. One major difference in this game, and it's the difference this year in Seattle, those two games, 39 for 180 and 33 for 175, they dominated on the ground.

Yes.

So you feel more pressure on Sam. And listen, he threw two awful picks. Purdy paid him back with an also an awful pick that Brady called just a fantastic coverage. But I don't know, off your back foot, you can't throw it. This is a big swing game, Colin. The 49ers have not... They've beat the Rams and Seattle on the road. You know, the Rams game was in Australia, but that was a road game. And now, because Seattle blew that game to Washington, they're 5-0 and they're 3-2. Now, it's a long season. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

But that's a big, big... I mean, the 49ers get the Commanders next game. So, I mean, the 49ers are in fantastic position.

But.

They were melting down in the third. I mean, in a complete meltdown. The Purdy pick, the Debo, where his hamstring blew, and I think he felt awful because he just dropped the ball, and you could feel it on Kyle. It felt like it was going to unravel. It's like, I've seen this song and dance, and it was last year.

They're going to lose this game. Mike Evans was the difference. I mean, Colin, he felt like a basketball player. Just give him the ball. Just give him the ball. Just give him the ball.

Just give him the ball.

It was incredible.

In games like this, it's hard for me to be critical. I mean, let's be honest. JSN drops that ball from Darnold, or Seattle is either tied or with a chance to win the game. I mean, there were just so many moments in this game. The two-point conversion. When I look at these teams... And I was thinking, I know I'm from the Pacific Northwest, but it would be a shame if this group of Niner stars don't win a Super Bowl.

I mean, like we know that happens once in a while in like pro basketball. You're like, oh, they should have won. Generally speaking in pro football, if you've got, you know, when Aaron Rodgers had his best run game in defense in Green Bay, he won that Super Bowl. Remember the run game started getting hot in the playoffs.

That was his best defense. Peyton Manning, when he had his best defenses, he's getting the Super Bowls. Drew Brees and Sean Peyton, like they were two. They needed one, right? And I kind of feel with the Niners, you know, it's the other thing to remember about Seattle. This is what I've been saying all year. So I picked the Niners to win today. And my take was Seattle's defense is top five, but that's against bad quarterbacks. Purdy's not a bad quarterback. They've done that against backups and, you know, Mariota.

Last year, they were number one, and Stafford was the best quarterback in the league in division. So I kind of feel like the defense, and this is just the reality of winning the Super Bowl, you're going to lose Boye Mafe to Cincinnati. You're going to lose those guys who are B, B-plus players. The other thing is they're not running. Now, Seattle does get Price, the rookie from Notre Dame, back. So right now, I mean, it's a little bit of– Smoke and mirrors. I mean, Helani can fumble.

Watson's kind of, you know, he's an undrafted guy. So I kind of think Seattle's making it up in their run game and they're kind of overcompensating because of that. I think Seattle will be a better team later. And I'm not sure if the Niners will because of their age. I mean, how many guys got dinged up today? Even Evans at the end looked like he was limping.

Yeah, I would say one big difference in these two teams, because you're right. I mean, they lost Moffay and they lost, you know, Kobe Bryant. The Niners have a million injuries. I mean, Brandon Cooks is catching touchdowns. He was added to the team a couple weeks ago. Who knows how long he can stay healthy. Is even with Debo going down, they have George Kittle and Mike Evans. It does feel Seattle's got JSN and Rasheed Shahid. To me, he's.

More of an elite gadget player.

But, you know, you know, returner. Helani was second on the team in catches with four. So it's like, okay, JSN and Cooper had that play at the end of the game, but let's face it. I mean, he's on the tail end of his career. So you're looking at a team like Mike Evans today to me was the difference in this game. I mean, and I think you hit on it. Not every game that has a bunch of turnovers is necessarily poorly played. This had a playoff feel. Oh, God, yes.

I mean, let's face it. The football today was pretty bad. Just overall, it was kind of a dud day. This game had an edge to it. You could feel it. When Eddie Pinero came out to kick what turned out to be the game-winning kick, and you could feel that crowd. It felt like an sec game. And you just, you know, even yesterday, right? There are 10 turnovers in the Oregon UCLA game. That was an awful game. Like that, that was a tough watch. This was not a tough watch.

Kyle needed this though. And the 49ers, their unit needed this to get over this hump Seattle, just not as dominant as they were at the end of last season. I think it gets back to, you know, look at what Kenneth Walker and listen, he hadn't played like that his whole career. He had been injured. But on that stretch, when they got hot, they could lean on him. Well, they can't lean on their running game right now. I mean, Brady's going nuts. Like, tuck the ball. Even after he fumbled it. Because he couldn't fathom. Because in his world for 20 years, you get cut tomorrow.

And they didn't fumble.

Remember the guy that fumbled or was late in New England? But Seattle's kind of in a tough predicament. And they bring in Joe Mixon. He can't pass him.

Physical.

They got Jadarian price on injured reserve. So I just think the diners big time guys, you know, Fred Warner with that punch. I mean, Fred Warner has been, and let's face it. Greenlaw Greenlaw is a wild card personality. I mean, last week he goes at Sean Payton and Fred Warner has to rip them over. That could have been worse today. You know, it's like, Sam Darnold, this isn't Lamar Jackson. I'm with Brady. Like, I hate these ticky-tack flags on the sideline.

The two calls I didn't like. The grounding call against Purdy was ridiculous. Terrible call. I didn't love the late hit on Darnold. I thought it was... And by the way, I always defend NBA players, soccer players and football players. If you lean into the I mean, this is a 15 yard penalty. You get a yellow card or a red card like I get it. It's situationally a manufacturing like offense. But I didn't think that was a late hit.

It was a late push, maybe.

And I see both sides of it. You can't headbutt, but he's over there. He's surrounded by 50 guys. Ernest Jones comes at him. It's like, what's good going to come of this? But, and then Brady mentions on the broadcast, Kyle said, they're going to come at us. They're going to try, especially him, you know, try to get you a personal foul penalties. This, you know, in a day and age, I think in college, in the NFL, there's such a transactional sport and guys bounce around. there's something old school about the hatred and the venom that you could feel it, you know, in this game, this rivalry, it's, it's awesome. I mean, I was, I was on the edge of my, the violence in that game for both sides.

I mean, you had ran, there, there was a hit from Mustafa on the 49ers and, where he leveled the wide receiver on Seattle. And I think typically they throw that flag. And I'm glad Tom said this. He's like, you can't throw that ball and put your wide receiver in that position. No one talks like that anymore because there's no such thing as a hospital ball because it's a flag. But they were actually pretty good today about just letting the physicality.

Go on the field. At one point, a Seahawk came up and hit I forget the player for the Niners. It was in the fourth quarter, and Brady almost laughed. He was like, wow. You could hear it up in the booth. Listen, this was a– I grew up in the Ollie Frazier era, like when there was no UFC and you'd get these heavyweight fights and the guys would fight three times. And the reason I like San Francisco today, because last year at the end of the year, John Seattle bullied them and humiliated them twice. And this is a 49er team that takes incredible pride in their violence and physicality. The Rams don't. The Rams can be physical, but they're pretty. They're clever. They're efficient with a little bit of physicality. San Francisco's entire identity is when you

watch a Niner game, the only team in the league that goes hit to hit for them Seattle. That's it. In fact, you know what it reminds me of? The Ray Lewis Ravens when they play the Steelers. Those games, you could put it on Thursday or Monday or Sunday. You're like, okay, this just sounds different to my ear on television. You could tell in the first half after Greenlaw got thrown out, Darnold got sacked twice back to back.

That's a pretty damn good old line. San Francisco- It just felt like all day to me. It's just like they went to Seattle as a total business trip. They knew very well what happened last year. And if they went down, they were going to go down. They were going to go down so physically. The other thing I have to say, that brought pretty drive that got them the touchdown and the two point conversion. That was MVP stuff.

I mean, that was sensational.

I thought when they kicked the field goal that ultimately won it on fourth or I guess it was third and short. Kyle, listen, he can get a little conservative in those spots, tried to go bully ball, which I don't like when Seattle knows it's coming because Byron Murphy is I mean, he's got a chance to be I mean, he's pretty special player. I would have put it in Purdy's hands. You got Kittle, you got Mike Evans, Purdy can run. I would have spread it out. And I was like, ah, didn't love it. It ended up not costing them, but I'm with you. I think, I think the defining second half for the 49ers was just the mental bounce back. Cause once Purdy throws that pick, I think a couple of years ago, it could unravel on

them a little bit. And like you said, he came right back. It also helps. You know, I mean, Mike is a pretty unique player in this day and age. That size. I mean, he's going up against guys that are 5'11 to 6 feet tall. He's got them by 5, 6 inches. And then you factor in his strength. It's not really a fair fight, but he was... He was exceptional down the stretch of this game. Colin, he broke his ribs a couple weeks ago. I mean, last week, John Lynch, who I would say is considered one of the tougher guys in the last 30 years to play in the NFL, went up to him and was like, hey, man, no big deal. We'll save you for Seattle. And Mike Evans, he said it on local radio this week, looked at him in the eye like, no, I'm playing in this game.

The doctors were telling the 49ers coach he wasn't going to be able to play. So to me, the 49ers have made Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey great acquisitions, but those were traits. This is probably one of their best free agent acquisitions in the Harbaugh Kyle era. I think because most of their players were either homegrown late round picks or trades the Mike Evans thing. And it's a, it's basically like a Tom Brady level guy, but playing wide receiver. I mean, he's a, he's just a pretty unique guy. And he fits their culture. I mean, is there a better culture fit at wide receiver for Kyle Shanahan in the 49ers? He's Julio Jones type.

Well, you know, like the San Francisco, it's interesting because Kansas City has struggled since they lost Tyreek Hill to put a receiving group together that works. But a lot of the troubles have been Rasheed Rice's immaturity. San Francisco's issues are just injuries. I mean, Pearsall this year. What if they had him? He's not available. Debo got banged up today. Evans was limping at one point, just broke his ribs. But I think it's almost like I always say about the Dodgers, that they'll go get a Tyler Glass now, and they don't even really need him until the playoffs. Mike Evans was brought in. to be a red zone problem. I mean, that's against, to me, against the Rams because Trent McDuffie's not a big corner, right? Seattle,

Weatherspoon's a great corner. But when I watched the Mike Evans move, that felt like a baseball team saying, we can live with 11 starts. We just want them to be in the biggest games. So I think, I think the smart organizations, I mean, San Francisco entered this year as this team's aging, John, this is a super bowl or bust year for them. And for the Rams, because of Matt Stafford's age, it's not for the Seahawks. They've got their ring. It's a very young team. Stafford makes the Rams like this is really, really big. And by the way, Aaron Donald's coming back for one year. Right.

So like, I feel like bringing Mike Evans is in and then bringing Debo back is You kind of bake in. If they can give us 10 games and be ready for the playoffs, we're good. And I think this game today, to your point, it was a playoff game. This could decide a home field in the playoffs.

Well, I would imagine the majority of the guys that played in that game will not be able to get out of bed in the morning. You look around the NFL, no one on the Lions is going to struggle to get out of bed tomorrow morning. There are a lot of games that I watched today that are like, this isn't great football. That thing was, and I think it starts with the coaches, the organization, the type of guys they like. Because the other thing is, you know, part of your culture and who you become is the type guys you bring into the organization. Ozzie did this forever with the Ravens. It's like Steve Smith Sr. 's available.

Come on. And Quan Bolden. You know, it's like they had a certain type of guy they liked at every position. Basically, they had wide receivers that played like they were linebackers, running backs that played like they could be hard-hitting safeties. Look at the 49ers. Kalon Black, who was a pretty controversial pick, third rounder from Indiana. It's like, he didn't go to the combine. It's like, well, we just watched him help carry the load for Indiana. They won 16 games.

And Cignetti, again, watching his team again this year, pretty mentally tough. Like you ain't cracking that lineup. If you ain't, your chin straps aren't buckled and you're hitting the hole. It's like he fits it. I mean, he didn't have a great statistical game, but he plays exactly how they would like. Goes right into the hole. And I think for the first time in a while, it's like McCaffrey who gets exhausted. I mean, you talk about a guy, he can tap, go out, and they can bring in another guy that they trust and is a rookie. And who, by all accounts, carries himself like he's a five-year vet.

So they don't get as consumed. And this is what a great front office and, you know, putting a team together. He didn't go to the combine. You can't draft him in the third round. We don't give a shit. We met him. We like him. We've watched the tape.

Boom.

Plug and play. Back up running back. Now, I'm not saying make a living off non-combine guys. But if you have conviction in a guy... who's coming from last year's Indiana team. I mean, Chiefs, we need a left tackle. Boom, undrafted free agent, Indiana. I would say last year's track record on that franchise or program is pretty impressive.

One of the things that really blew me away, I thought that pretty drive, the touchdown and two-point conversion drive, where he got, think about it, a bad grounding call and then a bad break. They threw a touchdown and Seattle called the timeout, and he still got the touchdown and two-point conversion. You go look at those last two drives by the Niners. Christian McCaffrey, the beating he took, even on successful runs. Remember, he just has raw arm.

He didn't put any cover on that. McCaffrey, it's a gun show. Some of the helmet on bicep hits, just those last two drives, I'm like, this guy. Took four or five shots from, I mean, Seattle safeties are rockets. They're missiles. They are, you can't head hunt anymore, but you can body hunt. And a couple of those shots that McCaffrey took on those final two drives. I'm like, I just hope the audience understands that is one of the toughest running backs. Walter Payton and Christian McCaffrey, Barry Sanders was amazing. But when I watch, McCaffrey, he has Walter Payton's toughness. Just literally the ability to shred, endure hits.

Do you notice when he comes back into the game, when he's out and takes a playoff and Black comes in and then he comes out, how fast he sprints to the huddle? He is sprinting like it's a race in the Olympics. I think that's the whole thing with him. It's like, hey, Christian, They try to they try to pull off the reins because when he practices, he never slows down. But this is his I think he pushed back.

I have to do this to maintain this level. And I don't know if there are many players, at least in my lifetime, who it was clear once he got to the Panthers, he was damn good. but whose career just perception-wise went to another level, and now everyone's like Hall of Famer, one of the great all-around players. He's probably not, I mean, he's clearly not quite as fast as he was three or four years ago, but he is just an exceptional winning player that you can rely on to catch balls, break that extra tackle. Cause again, part of playing physical in the run game, this is the Kyle mentality and most of the old school coaches is it wears them down too. So we're, we're just keep hitting you. It's, it's wearing their defense. How many

teams is Seattle going to play? Like they, they play the Rams. It's, he wants to throw Stafford 45 times a game. You know, this is, this goes back to the Richard Sherman teams against Harbaugh. They're the 49ers deep down, want to run it 30, 35 times and right between the tackles downhill, uh, So that drive you're talking about was 12 plays, 74 yards, seven minutes long, and they were down five points. And it felt more like a 10-point deficit. It felt like, God, this is a game for the line.

And I want to say it again. I don't want to be too hard on Seattle because if JSN makes that catch and he does 90 out of 92 times, they are in an unbooked.

Seattle showed a lot of metal, too, because they were melting down in the first half with all the turnovers. The turnover at the end of the half McDonald's calling timeout. So you get the ball back with 20 seconds and first play, the guy fumbles and the D lineman lands on it. I thought it could unraveled for them too, but that that's part of having the home field advantage with that, that crowd. How many teams have that? Oh God.

All right. That was two best teams in the NFL played. Tell you about this new prediction market called Polymarket. Best new way to trade in sports. In the past, if you wanted action on a game, you put some money in, and if your team was doing well and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock the trade. or take a huge fee. But PolyMarket is a prediction market. It's a stock exchange for sports, buying in and selling out on your terms. Tried them all. PolyMarket is simply the best prediction market. Better than DraftKings, FanDuel, CalSheet, you name it.

They are so confident. You'll never go back to the other guys. They're giving you a free $ 25 on your first trade when you deposit just $ 10. And now they've launched a new feature. squads, a group chat. You can see what everybody's trading on. Use Colin when you sign up, C-O-L-I-N, to get 25 bucks free after you deposit just 10. Drake May was sensational today. 374 passing yards, four TD passes, Another touchdown on the ground, five total TDs and a 45-17 blowout of the Rangers. What impressed me most wasn't just the talent. It was the great decision-making, the discipline,

the consistency. The best quarterbacks figure out the success is about consistency every single day and the effort. It's why I love Factor. Factor makes it easy. to build better habits with chef-prepared meals that are packed, protein everywhere, ready in minutes. No grocery shopping, no meal prep, just delicious, nutritious food, fit your schedule. Drake May has shown us that becoming a franchise quarterback isn't just the spectacular play.

It's about doing the little things right over and over. That's today's Pro Move, presented by Factor. Okay, I want to. This was the early game from London, but I think it's newsworthy. Jags 19, Eagles 17. Second week in a row, Nick Sirianni has a blunder, end-of-game management blunder. So we know he doesn't call plays. So to me, you have to be one of two things, John. Either a great leader situationally, second week in a row, Sirianni with a coaching blunder, or a play caller. He's neither. So in the last three weeks... And I understand the injuries. The Eagles have three second half points combined and 13 three and outs just in the second half. So, and by the way, For Jacksonville, that was Liam Cohen's worst game

as a head coach. It was an odd when they drove the ball down the field and then put Trevor out at wide receiver, hiked the ball to somebody, not Trevor Lawrence, got a penalty, then another, then another. It was as bad. I mean, I think Liam Cohen's great. I thought it was his worst game as a coach. Certainly, and he had eyed watch. They overthought the room. They got too cute. He's bright. Smart people do get too cute.

Sometimes McVay used to do that in his first two, three years. He'd get a little cute. He doesn't anymore. But why the Eagles did not kick the ball out of the end zone, forcing Jacksonville to burn time. Remember, we just saw Brian Schottenheimer make a mistake recently where he should have kicked the ball out of the end zone and did not against Baltimore. So Nick Ceriani should have kicked it and had the ball returned. Therefore, um, You're saying.

He should have kicked the ball out of the end zone. So they get it at the 35. They don't have any timeouts. Who cares? Because if they catch a ball 20 yards, they can't stop the clock. The game's overs. Play the sidelines. Let them catch it in the middle of the field. It doesn't matter. So, yeah.

So, again, situationally, what do you do with Sirianni? I mean, he's not a play caller. He's completely coordinator-dependent. And now he has butchered back-to-back weeks, situational football. To his credit, he acknowledged it. What do you do with him?

Well, I think he's in today felt like the lowest point, you know, because again, you last year factors into this year. So last year is, you know, I don't know if you saw some of these clips of these, the tide in Southern California coming from El Nino. That's what it feels like right now. And today when he kicked that field one, when he returned the kick, This is the first, I'm proud to say it, because most of them are awful games. I usually turn on that bad boy on a Sunday morning on the West Coast, you know, second quarter.

The game's usually terrible. I was sitting there with coffee at about 6.20 this morning. I was pretty excited for this Sunday morning game. Obviously, I knew we were going to talk about it, and sometimes we don't because the games are awful. But, like, the Sirianni, the Jags are one of the best teams in the NFL. The Jags took the first kickoff to the house. but it was called back for a penalty. So they had returned it before.

And then when you don't have any timeouts, who cares? If he starts at a 35, you, you could argue, you could kick it out of bounds. You can start at the 40. They don't have any timeouts. It doesn't matter. So once he returned it, now you could argue they got a little lucky as they talked about in the broadcast.

If he just would have gone like five yards more, it would have ended. But still, uh, I, I saw the clip during one of the halftimes of the afternoon games of, uh, what's their kicker's name that he was saying like, Hey, I just do what I was told. I mean, and Sirianni blamed himself, but, and I guess he told the team like, this is my fault. I just think that this is my fault. Like, I mean, that's, pretty hollow. I know people that don't love this is my fault and that's Lurie and Howie. This is tough, Colin.

We have a convergence of two things. Owners are richer and more impulsive, so they're making more changes. And there are 96 jobs in the NFL of either OC, DC, or head coach. And this is my take, is that I think the Cowboys' young defensive coordinator was not quite ready to be a I don't think Nick Ceriani is really a head coach. And I think he could work in college maybe. He's a big kid, recruiter personality, but he is not a play designer. And maybe he deserved to be a head coach today or four years from today.

But one of the things that is happening in the NFL, we are seeing– A lot of clock management mistakes. That's always been an issue. Andy Reid used to get pegged for that when he was in Philadelphia. I know it's not easy. Herm Edwards did. But there are some of these that are really basic math, basic stuff. Schottenheimer, he wasn't interviewing for any other high-end coordinator job. Head coach, Cowboys. Okay.

Sirianni was a shock to the league. My theory on Philadelphia was always that Howie– got kicked to the curb by Chip Kelly. And so he was never going to hire a coach with power. So he gave it to Doug Peterson, who, you know, there wasn't multiple offers. And he gave it to Nick Ceriani that surprised the league.

He wants to have some control because Chip Kelly, fair or not, he feels like, you know, Chip pushed him Out. And so it's like, well, I'm not doing that again. I'm not going to hire a coach with that kind of gravitas. I don't want that in the building again because I got burned by it. I totally, absolutely understand that.

Howie and Lurie feel like to me they run the franchise. But the downside of that is you end up with a coach who's really not a head coach at this level. Certainly in his division, think about this. What if he was in a division with Andy Reid twice a year? and Sean Payton twice. He's in that division. He's in that division, so he's going up against Schottenheimer and Dan Quinn today. We can get to that in a second.

It's not one of the great coached divisions. I do think you have to have conversations about– I don't think they have anybody in the building that can replace him, but we always talk about this. If he was on the market, anybody hire him as a head coach? Not a chance.

Well, Sirianni, if he was fired tomorrow– in 2027 would not be an OC for any of the trial team. Obviously not a head coach. Look at Raheem Morris. who's not a head coach, immediately hires a defensive coordinator, probably had three other options and is excellent. You could argue the Niners defense looks better with him under Sala. And he is an example of a lot of guys. Dayball fired, and it's not going well, but he would have been hired immediately. The Eagles wanted him. I think when you look, I've had this theory that I think McVay and some of these younger guys, you know, the Kyle crew, Kyle's older now, but when he was hired, he was like 38.

that all these teams now hire younger coaches. If you look at, you know, Davis Webb was elevated and then kind of demoted. Christian Parker and Sean Mannion. Sean Mannion started coaching like four years ago. Davis Webb, three years ago. Before 10, I'd even say a couple years into McVay, coordinator jobs on pressure-packed operations like the Cowboys or like watching the Cowboy game. You know what I thought? Brian Schottenheimer.

Next year, hire Todd Bowles when he gets fired. That's who you need.

Yep.

You know, not Christian Parker, a 34-year-old who isn't prepared to handle this. Today, the last, before they kicked that field goal to take the lead, it was three yards minus six yards punt. Three yards, one yard punt. Three yards, zero yard punt. All these drives like a minute long. Well, this guy. and I'm not saying Bill Walsh could be calling plays and the Eagles offense might be broken, but this guy doesn't have anything in his back pocket to go and kyle or mcdonald calling defense they have things behind all this experience i get i remember four years ago this worked against this he he just started doing this and listen when i was younger i was like hey i'm all power for this then you get older

you realize like experience does really matter no matter what you do especially in these public jobs where the pressure is immense sean manion the eagles had trouble getting people to take this job is their offensive coordinator. I do think this time around, even Sirianni, I think people were turned off how he's proven to be one of the best GMs in like league history. I do think it would be a different vibe this time. Cause the other thing they would know is like, he's not anchored to the quarterback, big picture. Maybe he gets another year because of his contract. But if we got a pivot, we'll pivot.

Now he has all these picks and, I do wonder if they play it out like another year, Sirianni and Jalen. Because in 2028, now they've got those two first-round picks, the two second-round picks. But I spent two years working five feet away from him. That's not the way he's wired. I can't even imagine. I don't know how long that plane ride is from London to Philly. I mean, I don't remember a team. You know, the Cowboy thing, once they kicked it out of bounds and they got it at 35, they still got Lamar Jackson.

Yeah.

This one, they got no timeouts. You could have done anything except what they did. And then it happens. Jacksonville's kicker right there with like Brandon Aubrey, but it doesn't have like one of the biggest legs in league history. Now they got this backup snapper and it was kind of a thrilling. Yeah. Cause you were like, can he get this? Can he get this snap down? But that loss, this is the same old story, right? The punting, punting, punting, punting, no offense. They drafted a guy who made a couple of plays in lemon, but lemon strength. is running all these plays over the middle of the field, getting open in zones, sitting there. Well, that's not really Jalen's strength.

I know it ended with A.J., but where did they have a lot of success? Working the sidelines. So they draft this guy who he showed today. There's stuff there. You and I have watched him in college. He's a talented player. But his skill set with the quarterback skill set, it goes back to the Russell thing. And I think Russell was a better player than Jalen, but they don't really like they're not eating alive the middle of the field.

So it's just and now they're running games a disaster. I mean, Jacksonville didn't play well. Jacksonville played again.

I think Jacksonville played as badly as you can play in this league and win. They were they were the coaching was bad. The mistakes. I mean, when you have back to back to back red zone penalties, it's like, guys, button it up. You got I mean, Trevor's been around here forever. Like he's a pro. OK, Green Bay, 31, Chicago, seven. OK, this game proved a couple of things. Mr.

Didn't see that. Mr.

October, Jordan Love. We've talked about this for years. He's a bad September quarterback. He pops every October, 25 of 31. Last two weeks, he's completed 77% of his throws. Christian, I mean, basically they had two plays today. Go deep to Christian Watson or go deep to somebody else. Like that was the game plan. And that has always been.

That's why the Bears drafted a safety and Malik Muhammad from Texas in the secondary. Their secondary is a problem and they don't have a consistent pass rush. I kept saying about Chicago that their run game and time of possession dominance was masking a very, very average defense. Well, it was below average today. Green Bay just said, we're going to go downfield. Jordan's always thrown a beautiful deep ball.

But it's fascinating with the Bears. What happened to Colston Loveland? Where did he go? We're five games in, John. He emerged last year as their go-to. He was their go-to player. That's why they moved off DJ Moore. It's like, oh, we found our one. He's a tight end. Here's the truth about modern work. Most people aren't overwhelmed because they need better ideas. They're overwhelmed because work has become fragmented.

Too many files. Too many conversations, too many platforms, too many moving pieces. It's exhausting. Every time you switch between them, momentum disappears. I don't think everybody's satisfied with that, but to me, this game was more about They looked at film, and they're like, because of the dominant run game by Chicago, it's masked a very average defense, and they exposed what we thought coming into the season was their problem, which is you could beat Chicago down the field.

To me, it was as simple as Jordan Love, like you said, was exceptional. The pass that he had, I think the second touchdown to Watson, where he one-hand caught in the back, that might have been the most beautiful play so far of 2026 in the NFL. I mean, just he let it rip, and Watson caught it, and that was gorgeous. I mean, Watson and Golden couldn't be stopped.

And on the flip side, that quarterback play, Tyson Bajent, who I know they liked, I don't think he could have been worse. I mean, I saw one quarterback worse than him, and his name was Dylan Raiola, and he also got benched this week. I mean, that was... You can't function with that level of quarterback play. So I have a hard time like what happened to all these guys.

The quarterback play was really, really atrocious. I gave him a little bit of a pass last week. It was kind of a weird game. This, though, was he was unplayed. He could have been benched way earlier, too. You know, I think he tried to battle through it. And then when Case came in, I think to start the fourth quarter.

you probably could have had the hook at halftime, and it just got worse and worse. Like you said, the Bears' defense for the first time, it's like, I think I saw a stat Watson and Golden so far this season statistically are two of the top five wide receivers. I mean, they are, Matthew Golden, the Texas kid for them, Watson gets a lot of, he looks fantastic. They got a one-two punch, but their defense had no shot of stopping them.

So this would have been Caleb Williams, hey, this is going to be– we've got to try to win 34-31. But that quarterback play, I mean, they couldn't have scored 10. They couldn't move the ball. The turnovers, throwing picks. I think Case, the Case throw two, Tyson threw two, he threw one.

Listen, you had two almost perfect offensive performances, one with Case Keenum, one with Tyson Badgett. This is why they're backups. You're not going to go on a three game winning streak. I mean, it was, and also when Tyson, Tyson Beijing gets behind, okay. Backup quarterbacks generally don't play well from behind.

They play well when there's an element of surprise. There's not a lot of film. They have good protection in a run game. They can play with a lead. Case Keenum playing with a lead in the second half against Philadelphia. OK, that's different. Now, all of a sudden, you're on the road. You're down. You don't have much of a run game.

It's like, OK, that's a snowball. That's I think if you would have told them they go two and one with Caleb Williams out with two great performances from backups, you would sign up for that every day.

Of the week. 100 i will give i think we need to give green bay a lot of credit because i assume the bears were going to kill him now once but none guy i think he got you know that thing popped up on like friday that's not ideal but and i've listened you and i are both on ben johnson couldn't think any more highly of them they have talked a lot of you know what though about the packers and they have circled this franchise and It was the first time in 20 years there was actual momentum.

It was like, Bears are favored on the road in Lambeau, 20 years. And so I'm starting to think, oh, that was the Urlacher, that team, against an old Favre. That's pre-Rogers. So they went in there. They got their ass kicked today. I mean, that was– and the one thing you see with Green Bay, if Love– but they haven't been able to protect them. Well, Love was only sacked a couple times.

They didn't have to run the ball. It shows you Mnangai, pretty important player for them. I mean, that's pretty, you know, for a seventh rounder who's kind of established himself as like, I know you guys paid Swift, but I might be the best runner on this team, especially between the tackles, just hammer him. But Tyson, this gets back to Tyson.

He was... He played like a backup play today, and they've paid him. He didn't play great last week either. It's a little concerning. I was high on him just because they were high on him, and he looks— I mean, the Packers' defense has been atrocious, too.

I think I will say this, is that the mystery teams in the league have been, how is Green Bay this bad, and how are the Chargers this bad? The Chargers put up a fight today, but again, they can't move the ball. The offense is broken. But this was going to happen for Green Bay. They weren't going to play 14 straight horrible weeks. Right. Like this was eventually going to happen. So it happened.

I kind of thought they would. I started thinking after the last couple of games, they might be like a four win team. But, you know, they're probably if Jordan Love's going to play better than seven to nine wins.

Patriots 45, Raiders 17. Two weeks ago, the world quit on Drake May. On FS1, I said, I'll buy the stock. Hold it. You don't have to buy more Drake May stock. Don't sell it. Just hold it. I believe that good coaches in this league, and I think Vrabel and Josh McDaniels are excellent coaches. Good coaches in this league, they're like middle relief and bullpens. They stop big innings. Good coaches course correct very quickly. In college, if you have a flaw, it can take a month to figure it out.

Sometimes in the NFL, you can figure it out at half. But Drake May was going through a process where too much was on his plate. I thought today six Patriots had three or more receptions. He sprinkled the ball everywhere. He totally saw the field. Guy was 26 of 34, 374 yards. Four touchdowns, no picks. I also think some of, you know, everybody's got film now on Kirk Cousins and the limitations of that offense. I think some of this is, you know, the Patriots have, you know, there's the Super Bowl team last year. They're at home. But I think the thing, I think what's happening, John, with social media, we all make decisions very quickly now, and they're very harsh decisions. And Drake May, you know, that Seattle game

where he's in Seattle, he throws that really bad end zone pick. It's a standalone game. We're all watching it. That's terrible. And then he has a bad game or two. And we're like, OK, he's done. This is a raw, really young player. I thought today he was as good as any quarterback in the league. I mean, he moved, didn't have great run support, but New England just was.

I mean, they were up 21-7 at half. He was 11-15. They obliterated him. I thought he was as good. Again, there is a clear pattern with Drake May. When he's comfortable and willing to scramble a little bit with a decent run game, he's a damn good quarterback. If he plays a great team, there's leakage on the offensive line.

He feels rushed. He starts backfooting it. He tends to do that. He is a quarterback that Purdy now has moved to another level. Purdy did some of this early in his career and in college. He could be reckless if you pressured him. Brock has gotten out of that. Brock has graduated to the kind of VIP-level quarterback, which you blitz him, you get burned. You blitz him, he reads it, he gets rid of it. I think Drake's still learning the game. And if you put pressure on him and there's, you know, the offensive line on the left side is struggling, he can get bad really quickly.

And I think where you graduate as a quarterback in the NFL is how you handle pressure. Purdy has graduated to the Brady level where he just, please bring it on, put pressure on me. I don't think Drake's there. And I thought today he was really comfortable and he looked brilliant.

Shows you, I think confidence with young players can really just swing back and forth. And it was gone, I thought, a couple weeks ago. I mean, he couldn't have been much worse. And then whatever happened last week, he got his swag back. Because you could tell, I felt like two drives in, I'm like, the Raiders are in major trouble today. And when he scrambles to his right, because he was missing plays moving. and throwing when he was off. Well, today, every time he moved, I went, this is going to be a layup throat. He's hitting guys in stride. They're walking into the end zone. So I would say his great strength is he's not Brady or Manning inside the pocket.

It's get them on the move to throw. When you get them on the move to throw that to me is where he just, and they, they, They feel like, okay, they got some juice back. I think the Raiders are a little flawed. I mean, their quarterback can't move at all. They can't run the ball. They're wide receivers. I mean, Bowers is incredible. But, I mean, I'm looking at their box score right now. Jenty was second on the team.

They have no wide receivers. So they got two tight ends. Jenty can catch the ball. But, like, the other thing is, like, I like Spytek a lot, and I think they're going to be on a trajectory, big picture, in good shape. and it was a weird draft, but when you take a running back six overall, Bijan McCaffrey, you know, Gibbs, they traded back from six to 12, but they said they would have taken them at six. Like he's gotta be one of the best players in the league. Is Gentry ever going to be a top five running back in the league? Probably not. So he's just going to have to be a really good, but he's, you know, in a game like today, it's like, Hey, can I just lean on you? And you give us like 70 and slow the game down. And you know, there, there

were offensive lines getting shoved around, uh, Yeah, I mean, it starts and ends. Like, if Drake's going to play like that, they can play with anybody, especially in New England. And it also goes back to, you know, that west to east thing for the 10 a.m. kickoffs. Historically, the numbers speak for themselves. And the Raiders looked asleep. I was also thinking, because I was like, you know, I kind of want the Raiders in the points. Someone sent me a thing with the trends when the Patriots, you know, in situations like this, coming off a win. Against a West to East team, it goes back to Brady and Belichick who have blown them out. Think of that game last week for the Raiders. You speak of Ali Frazier.

To them, that was their Ali Frazier.

High emotion.

And they lost it. So high emotion, high physicality. I can imagine a lot of guys on their team, even by Wednesday's practice, still kind of feeling it. Let's face it, they haven't played in that many games like that. And now, Colin, their stretch, I like the Raiders, or I mean, I did before this game, but it's Bills-Rams the next two games.

So all of a sudden, you get some positivity. You know, you could go 0-3 in that stretch, and after the 0-4, because you lost to the Chiefs. So, you know, I think Cousins... Now, it would be hard for Fernando, too, because their wide receivers are nonexistent, but he can't move. So if you can just corral him and you can't run the ball, the Raiders are kind of sitting ducks.

And that's what it felt like today. He's just getting engulfed. And especially once you're down 21-7, 28-7, it's like, well, they're not going to run it between the tackles. They've got to pass. What are you going to do with Kirk? So this fight for Abel makes a lot of money because it did feel– It was pretty negative, especially back there.

The Red Sox get their ass kicked by the Yankees. Drake Mays sucks. It's just a lot of negativity in the air. Boston, they kind of feed off that. And I gave him credit last week. You've got to be mentally tough in some of these markets.

Oh, listen, Boston and Jalen Brown got traded for Paul George and People Are Furious. There's some real animosity in the building. This is also the market in America that has the highest sports radio ratings. So, I mean, their shows get like 15s and 16s. What does that mean? Everybody in Boston listens to sports talk radio. It's one of the last sports sections that matters. So, it is a very tough place to play and coach. The game ended 27-27. Giants and Washington. Two things off the top.

I said before the season, I thought New York had better personnel than people gave them credit for. Even with Jameis Winston, who I thought had an excellent second half. Isaiah likely had 11 catches. Malik neighbors had 11 catches. Matt Nagy had a very, very good day calling plays. Scataboo, although he had a fumble, um, because I thought they were going to go in for the win. Scataboo worked. Um, Jameis Winston had three touchdowns, no picks. The Giants looked dead, and then they played a great fourth quarter, and Jameis Winston looked like– he looked like a– there's a reason he's always had talent. Even when Tom Brady replaced him in Tampa, he was putting up huge numbers. He just had too many picks. You watched him today in the

second half. Jameis Winston was magical, and the play calling was excellent. But this game comes down to the most– inexcusable, inexplicable thing I've ever seen in coaching. I was sitting watching it on TV and I thought, okay, they're going to down the ball, bring in the field goal kicker and win. And for the record, I had the Giants and the points. I thought, okay, this is, and when they snapped the ball, I thought, all right, they're trying to burn time and then they're going to dirt it.

They're going to incomplete. And they didn't. And I'm like, do I blame Jaden Daniels? Do I blame Dan Quinn? I don't feel that would happen with an offensive coach. Dan Quinn's a defensive coach. So my take is, in the building, I mean, Jaden's still a kid. Jaden's still a young quarterback. I feel like there should be some coach in his ear. I think that is almost fireable.

I think it was so bad. I mean, you have a coach. You have an owner with a very strong personality, Josh Harris. Ben Johnson famously didn't take the job saying it's basketball guys who think they know way more about football than they do. But I watched that. And I think this ownership group went into the season looking for a reason to move on from Dan Quinn. I mean, they already remember we had Cliff Kingsbury. It's like, I quit.

I'm out.

So this year was a lot. There's been a lot of talk. You know that your sources. There's a lot of talk that this thing is it's hot. I think that's almost a fireable moment.

I know he's a nice guy, but I'd fire him. If people are listening this Monday morning, I wouldn't be shocked if the news comes out. I don't even know who else is on the staff that's been a head coach. To me, I don't put it on the quarterback as much as the head coach. It's inexcusable. His only job. He's not calling the plays. He doesn't call offense or defense.

He just stands there. I know you love it with that backwards hat running up and down the sideline. So if you're going to be the rah-rah CEO guy in a situation– I left the room. I had to go to the bathroom so bad. It was like 50 seconds left. They're going to walk off field goal, and I came– and I look on social– I'm like– so I had to rewatch it. I couldn't believe– Jaden– Some of it, I guess, is on the quarterback. You just look over like, shouldn't I just dirt the ball with 10 seconds to go?

And then we kick it. This isn't the end of the game. A field goal. You could have kicked the field goal 45 seconds.

The game's over.

Everyone's touched the ball. This is overtime. You just leave. But to me, Dan Quinn has to, again, another coordinator, 31 years old, 31 years old. You know, Ditka just passed in his era. It would have been unheard of to give these guys chances at that age, not even because they were anti young, talented people. I couldn't trust you in these situations. You have this quarterback who's been injured.

He's coming back. I just don't understand how Dan Quinn, who's literal job, because I'm with you. You know, I was in Philly when Andy was in the peak of the late game. There's a lot going on in some of these situations. Sometimes the quarterbacks are exhausted when, you know, it happens a lot on explosive plays. They get a delay a game because everyone's huffing and puffing down the field, not paying attention. Everyone was stagnant on this. There was because this started with like 50 seconds when they when they ran the play and then they got up and they just kind of waited around and then they snapped it at whatever in the team's. Dan Quinn would have had to say something, just start screaming from the sideline.

I feel like any coach that weren't their salt in the history of the league would have just taken over from the sideline and started screaming at Jaden Daniels. So for him to do what ended up happening was, even the announcers, because I don't think anyone, you see John Harbaugh's quotes, like, yeah, I didn't envision that happening. I mean, in his mind, he thinks they've lost the game. So Dan Quinn is Look who their owner is, too, a basketball guy. They've run through a bunch of coaches with the Sixers. If this year does not go well, Nurse will get fired. I mean, that's what this guy's used to doing. So, you know, I think Dan's hung his hat on being a good guy. And he had a good run with the Cowboys, right? Their defense was good.

Ever since that ending with the Green Bay Packers, I know they had that one year touched by the Angels of winning some of those games. It has been now two years of embarrassing. Like, really, that's... that might be one of the worst moments in the history of the league.

I thought again, I very rarely have I thought, if I thought, wow, that's a fireable offense, but it's, if I have, it's been with a coach that's already in trouble. You're not going to do that with Ben Johnson or Sean McVay, but when you're already questioning kind of a coach and what the franchise last year, um, You know, they beat Seattle, and I thought, okay, that's a reprieve.

That's a nice win for him. But, I mean, the immediate reaction in an East Coast city, East Coast talk radio owners, they listen to it. They read. They listen for reaction. It's– I think.

Has anyone ever been fired after a tie? It'd probably be the first time in a season after a tie, but– I would say it's probably above a 50% chance. I would not be stunned at all because this team now, the NFC East is in shambles. I mean, it's there to be taken. If Washington wins that game, Jaden was making some plays. Sonny Stiles made some plays. You'd be like, oh, we got a little moment. The division's wide open. Eagles stink.

The Giants have a backup quarterback. I'd even go back before the play. They're up 14 points. against Jameis Winston, who had not looked good in that game in the fourth quarter. I think with like eight minutes.

And he just caught fire.

Giants got the ball back. He caught fire and they got annihilated for two drives of 14 points. For a split second when they scored the second touchdown, and I know Harbaugh's old school conservative, I thought you could have gone for two there and just ended them. But he kicked the extra point and then obviously tied the game.

Steelers 34 Colts 22. Um, I think McCarthy and Aaron Rogers, we'd probably agree on this high ceiling, excuse me, high floor, pretty low ceiling. They're not real creative or clever. Aaron spun for a big play today, but he doesn't move like he used to, but it is the third straight game where their offenses look beyond competent. Jalen Warren was good. Uh, Bernard, the receiver, had 80 yards. Friermuth had a couple of touchdowns, seven yards of play, two for two in the red zone.

When I watch them today, I think Pittsburgh's actually got a little better talent. Now, some of it's older. Hayward, TJ Watt, some of it's older. Like the Niners, that's okay. I tend to think it's an organization. They play really well at home. Their defense at home tends to play a little better. You know, situationally, they've got old, smart players.

But Aaron, you know, I looked up and he was 10 for 10. I kind of I kind of feel like what the Steelers are going to be at their best this year was today is that. DK Metcalf, Warren, Bernard, Friermuth. Aaron's moving pretty well. As you well know, when you hit that age, you go into some of those games and you're not healthy and you're dinged up. Aaron looked pretty spry today. And I think Mike McCarthy got hired to move. I mean, he's not the most progressive offensive coach, John, but they decided, let's hire an offensive coach. We can't get some things right. I think you're seeing the Mike McCarthy effect. I think he's squeezing much more juice out of this offense than the previous staff would have.

Well, I think one game changer so far this year, because DK has been pretty underwhelming, is Jalen Warren is doing what they gave DK $ 150 million to do. He had, what, a 50-yard run. He had a 75, 80-yard catch. I mean, and he did that in the Cincinnati game. He's had explosive plays.

Yes.

So one issue last year for him was like, God, he's kind of dink and dunk to the seven tight ends they have. Remember last year they were a seven tight end offense with like DK Metcalf. Well, now it feels like, you know, they got multiple wide receivers that he trusts, even if DK is not doing that much.

The tight ends are still there. And Warren has really been a game changer for him because the explosive home run hitting speed. and anytime that you're just busting off 50 yard runs or 80 yard screen passes it technically wasn't whatever that was it's it makes a lot easier on Aaron because that that guy you know they say what's the best you're you know a quarterback's best friend the run game I would just say a running back in general that you can throw it to because running back ain't going to be far away from the line of scrimmage and Aaron is going to get rid of the ball fast now in the they can't really make you pay because their defensive lines probably average. I mean, Indies, that thing is. Well, they're giving up.

They're giving up.

I thought, I thought Pittsburgh was by far the better team. The score reflects what I witnessed. And Aaron's Aaron was good. I mean, he was really solid. He was, and he was into it. You can, you can tell he's pointed McCarthy after a play called a friar move, trying to, I think some, I'm sure they talked about on a Wednesday or Thursday that would work. And, Their relationship is much like my grandparents when I was a kid. Been married for 50 years, seen a lot. Some days they love each other, some days just stay away. There's nothing like that in the NFL. Even McCarthy calling him the asshole.

No one else would have said that, but he's known him for... so long it's and aaron was acting like my nine-year-old or nine-month-old son on the field so it's their relationship's just an outlier to the entire like you know so i i didn't even get that i'd make that big a deal of it i'm like only.

Well and i also i defended this week i said i i tend to defend players who um in the heat of the game jeff saturday and peyton manning are going after it Eric Biennemi and Mahomes are going after it. Brady and Josh McDaniels. I'm going to give Aaron, you know, it's like, come on, let's get to playing.

Let's go.

I'm going to give players always the benefit of the doubt when you're in the heat of the battle. It shows me you care. So I defended Peyton and Jeff Saturday, Mahomes, Brady. That's not ego to me. Now, if you're yelling at him in the hallway, in the facility on a Wednesday, you're a jerk if you're trying to humiliate him. But, John, you know this. I mean, you– You know, podcasting is not live. I've been doing a show before in my life and there's major screw ups. And during the commercial break, I got a bark and I don't like it. But like when you're in the heat of the battle in life, you could be, you know, in court. You could be in a doctor's office. Like, you got patients sitting in the chair. Like, you need people to respond. I'm really

going to defend the quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, here because he was yelling about the right thing. Get the plan. He wasn't yelling to be a jerk. He wasn't yelling because the receiver, you know, fumbled after getting shelled. He was yelling about the right thing, which is let's be faster and more efficient. So I will defend Aaron on that.

Denver 23. Charger 17. This is classic. First three quarters, Bo Nix passer rating 72. Last two drives, Bo Nix passer rating 103. So I will say, you know, they can't solve the problem. I think what's happened, and I really noticed it today because I really watched for it. I think Bo Nix has lost some of his confidence.

It could be confidence in the play calling or confidence in himself. But there are positions in this sport, quarterbacks one of them, You know, we know in all sports how you feel about yourself. Like, let's let's look at Marvin Harris in Arizona. He clearly has lost his confidence. He needs a new organization. He may go to Houston and flourish, but he lost his confidence in Arizona with the operation and himself. That's my take today is that charges are broken. That season's over. Denver's too talented. Bo Nix does have some talent, but I think he I just think he's lost his confidence.

I mean, I wrote down through three quarters, they had 133 yards of total offense. I mean, he looked pretty terrible. I mean, he's a guy. I mean, the Chargers are not any good. Today, you know, they make Sean takes over play calling. It'll look the exact same. Is there a chance that this is all the quarterback and has nothing to do with the play call? And for whatever reason, he just gets into this complete desperation mode with six minutes on the clock and can play a little looser.

They also got the ball twice because of these turnovers from the Chargers. So it's not like he's driving them 80 yards down the field. I'm at the point right now, I know they won. I don't think the Broncos are that good because their quarterback's not that good. And you can't. You know, last year was a pretty big outlier season, winning all those games. You can't sustain playing like this.

Look at what happened when they played a good team last week. They lost by 10 points because you can't have no offense. I mean, they have no offense, Colin. I mean, he's in the mid-80s, midway through the third quarter, to a team that people are slicing and dicing. It's just, you can't even fucking... And this is Sean Payton now calling the plays. So it's... I don't... I I'm starting to be like, I'm kind of out. I mean, I'm just out on this. And sometimes for whatever reason, things just don't work. And whatever his major flaws, I don't know if it's mental because physical, he could, we've seen him make incredible throws in these big moments. He's a good athlete, but in just the flow of the game,

it's like, Looks like Jalen Hurts in the flow of these games. Like, this is awful. I mean, I had them on two separate TVs. I'm like, this is an awful watch. This is not an enjoyable product. If I was just a random consumer on my off day, I'm like, I.

Don't want to watch this crap. I talked to people before.

He threw for 123 yards, Colin. Less than five yards in a 10.

I talked to people before the draft. I liked him because I saw him play twice. I liked him more than all my executives liked him. Everybody thought he was kind of late first, you know, kind of 39th pick. Bo Nix sit for a couple of years. But Sean, remember, they wanted Russell gone. They didn't have any draft capital because they used it to get Sean. They had dead cap money. So it was like I think Sean talked himself into he's got 61 college starts. He doesn't take sacks.

He doesn't turn it over. He won't get in the way. I don't think Sean thought he was the best quarterback in the draft. I think Sean thought we don't have the draft capital to move up. And he's got 61 college starts. He's got a little bit of a breeze comp. I mean, I think you can talk yourself into a lot of things. Stories are out now that Sean liked the fact that he There was no negative plays with him.

He didn't turn it over. Like he was a guy that could come in and run Sean's offense and listen to him, which Russell Wilson was just kind of had a style and couldn't change the style. But I think I think and this happens to all of us in life. Sometimes it could be a relationship. It could be a business partner. You talk yourself into stuff because you're in a bad place. Denver was in a bad place. dead cap hell, and they'd given away draft capital. But they actually had some really good players. Sean Payton had a bumpy first year. And his thing is, I want to win now. I don't want to teach a kid how to play football. This guy's dad was a coach. He went to Auburn.

He went to Oregon.

He's been on both coasts. He's been in two conferences, played a lot of college games. He's ready to start and play. And you talk yourself into it. Because I know Sean's told me he likes him. But I also think is that he's also a guy, the more film you get, the more I mean, he succeeds late for a couple of reasons. He's usually playing from behind, or a defense is more fatigued, and Denver's got really nice personnel.

But I think if he lost today, I think you go to the backup. I mean, I think the win keeps him starting. You can't watch it.

For a split second until the Chargers completely unraveled, when it was 17-10, it felt like they were going to lose. I mean, it felt like the thing was melting down.

Presented by J-Lab. Head to Amazon. The code is COLINCOWARD for 20% off any J-Lab products. And they are all awesome. Feel alive with J-Lab. Because there was a lot of bad football today, and some of these games are simply not worth talking about.

You don't want to break down Jets-Browns? Oh, God.

I mean, listen, Titans games are unwatchable. Like, there's some of this stuff. And we got a great one tomorrow, Rams-Bills. If they were playing today, that would probably have been our second game. I want to talk, whenever we find a new great coach in college football, Kurt Cignetti or Marcus Freeman, whenever we find– a great new coach. And this guy at UCLA, you told me before the season, did you not? You told me, keep your eye on UCLA.

So they get, he comes from James Madison, Bob Chesney. Is that his name?

Yeah, Bob replaced Cignetti when he went to Indiana.

You'll have to edit that. Bob Chesney, who replaced Kurt Cignetti. So Cignetti, Marcus Freeman, and this guy. They all use the same formula, really physical, going to build a run game in an offensive line, excellent at the line of scrimmage, not a lot of frills, not a lot of nonsense. So he brings the running back Wayne Knight from his program, had 22 carries against Oregon. Oregon, by the way, lost Will Stein, a great offensive coordinator. He went to Kentucky, which beat LSU and Lane Kiffin this week. So, you know, listen, sometimes, John, as you know, we've seen this with the Detroit Lions.

You lose a Ben Johnson. Well, there's not a Ben Johnson on the market. You downgrade coordinators. Whoever replaced Will Stein, Will Stein's a brilliant young football coach. It's going to be hard to replace him. So they're just not as good offensively. But watching what this guy's done, They doubled Oregon in rushing yards, dominated time of possession. Bob Chesney is Signetti, is Marcus Freeman. Whenever somebody catches our eye, it's almost, I mean, this is why we love Mike Ditka.

This is why we love Nick Saban. intense line of scrimmage, not a lot of frills, run the football, win time of possession, be smart late. I mean, they had penalties, but I look at them right now. And also because of the transfer portal, John, you can do this quicker. You know, like Nick Saban in the transfer portal era would not have lost to Louisiana Monroe his first year at Alabama. Like you can do it now in a year.

You can bring your star players. That's what Signetti did to Indiana from James Madison. But I looked at UCLA and my take watching that game was you better start renegotiating his contract right now. Pay him more. Have punitive outs. If he leaves, he's got to because most of those young coaches have never made great money. And it's like L.A.

's expensive. But I think UCLA has their best football coach in a long time.

I mean, Colin, this gets back to what we talk about some of these spread offense coaches. Like, why do their defenses always struggle? Sark has so much money, he can just buy the best players. But if he couldn't, like, historically, his defenses have never lived up to how well he recruits because that's established in practice. So you use Cignetti, Marcus Freeman, and Bob Chesney. What do you think their practices look like? The majority of it is running the ball.

When Nico gets hurt yesterday, it's like, whatever. I think they've thrown for four touchdowns on the season. They were 5-0. Or 4-0. They're not as dependent on Pat. He's not running four and five verticals for periods on end on Tuesday and Wednesday in the middle of practice. Where a lot of these other offensive guys, Lane is a good example.

What do you think Lane wants to do most of? Throw the ball. That's what a lot of these guys. And I don't even blame them. But that's like... One thing that this guy clearly is going to hang his hat on is we're going to be tougher than you. It's why after the game, when landing kind of transition, still talking about USC, but into UCLA, he had a lot of respect for UCLA because of the way they play.

Cause coming from Kirby and Nick, that's a mindset. That's in theory, how Oregon kind of wants to operate, but their quarterback was so bad. And, I don't know what's going on with them. I mean, they got 200 people getting paid, not working.

Remember, Dante Moore can move. The backup, who played well against USC, but remember, he comes into the game against USC in the middle of the game, so you haven't scouted him. You're preparing for Dante Moore and his kind of viability and his mobility. This kid's a pocket quarterback, so UCLA knew where he was going to be. He didn't play well. He's kind of a plotting athlete. And it was ugly, but I was just taken by when you watched UCLA play, you're like, it's Cignetti. It's just run the ball, line of scrimmage, no frills. If you have to give a running back 25 carries, that's what you do. Dominate time of possession, go on the road, get the crowd to be quiet. You control the ball.

It was just like watching Indiana in Cignetti's first year where they were good, but Remember his first year? But they just weren't. They didn't have the quarterback. They weren't explosive. Right. Like last year, they get Mendoza. And it's like, oh, OK, now it all comes together. Indiana, to me, has kind of regressed to the first year with Hoover, which is they're really good. They're not quite as explosive offensively. There's some limitations. But I feel like I was watching Indiana first year Signetti. I'm like, that's how you do it.

Physicality jumps to the television.

Well, you hit it on the head when you started with the money thing with the coaches. UCLA has never had to deal with this, ever. Nothing even close to be like, you know what the going rate is for a top guy? You know what his coordinators make if he wants to keep them? We're talking $ 2- 3 million. I mean, especially in this conference. Now, he's not just leaving for any random job at this point in time. Like, to me, he feels like a pretty regal big time. But Indiana, kind of used to a lot of success, you know, in the basketball program historically, knows what sports mean. Boom, take care of him now. Signetti and his coordinators are making millions of dollars. UCLA, Big Ten's in a little trouble this year for the playoff spots. Ohio State in.

I feel pretty confident Indiana is going to be in. After that, you look at UCLA does not play Ohio State. Their toughest game left is USC, maybe at Michigan, but Michigan's been terrible. A lot of.

Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nevada.

They're going to be a playoff team, probably. 10-2 playoffs.

Yeah, because USC's 6-1, but they have. Ohio State at home. They do not match up. USC secondary is an issue. They do not match up with Ohio State. Then they go to Indiana and then it's at UCLA. So if you if a betting person, UCLA has an absolute route to the playoff. By the way, Cignetti's first year from James Madison to Indiana playoffs. What did they lack? Yeah. offensive wow. They were good. They didn't have penalties. The special teams were good, but they didn't have wow. Mendoza was the wow. So I'm telling you, I'm watching them. I'm like, that's the first Indiana team.

That's what they look like. Kind of ugly, no frills, kind of control the clock. And you look up and you're like, yeah, Indiana's kind of good. And then they played Notre Dame in the playoff. They just didn't have any firepower.

I know UCLA historically wasn't as bad as Indiana, the all-time losingest program. But last year, wasn't it week one they played New Mexico and UCLA lost like 40 to nothing? And you knew right away, you're like, this Deshaun Foster thing is not– it had hit an Indiana low. Like this program's at an all-time low. So to come and do this immediately– the other thing is like whatever JMU– to bring in the running back, and I'm sure he's got other transfers– Signetti did the same thing. We're seeing Penn State bring Iowa State. They can't play in the Big Ten. These guys don't belong in the Big Ten.

Some of these guys that move programs and bring their guys with them, it's like, yeah, this is not good enough. You've seen it at Penn State when he brought all his Iowa State guys. You're like, this is not good enough here. Yet these guys from JMU, they just come and they don't just belong. You're like, is this one of the best players in the conference? Remember with Cignetti, it was immediate. It was like that Pons. It was like multiple guys. You're like, Jesus. So whatever they're doing at that program, it's got to be one of the most incredible four-year stretches of Cignetti and then this guy for a couple years and what they produced of getting kids in a day and age when you can transfer portal,

land guys, steal guys. Pretty incredible story, Colin. They are... Not the funnest watch. You got to like some old school football, but it's a pretty great story.

Good coaching jumps off the television. UCLA looks very well coached. Oklahoma 27, Texas 24. This is why I want to talk about this game. I think I've told you this before. All SART teams are the same. Big, talented, skillful, good quarterback play. Little loose on the details. They had a blocked punt. They had eight penalties. There was a pick six by Arch Manning. I feel like all Sark— Sark does the big stuff very well. He's good with your AD.

He's good with the boosters. He's great on recruiting. he tends to be able to, he's got a good eye for personnel. But penalty, every time I watch a big game with them, I'm like, oh, they'll have like a horrible half or a terrible special teams play or too many penalties. I feel like all Sark teams look the same.

It's not a criticism, it's a reality. But I was thinking about this with Arch Manning. He's 6'4, 222, mobile, good arm and smart. He is really inconsistent. So was Brock Purdy in college. And I look at Arch Manning, and I thought, of course, he should play another year of college. Wouldn't hurt him at all. But my takeaway is, how many years has he been there? Is this year four?

And my take is, isn't he really better? Because he's going to get drafted. He's big.

He moves.

He's smart. He's a Manning. And he does have, I don't know if he has a plus arm, but he makes some nice throws. He's just all over the map consistently. My take is NFL coaching, if you get the right guy, is better than college coaching. And being in an NFL facility is better than being on a college campus. And I'm watching Arch, and I'm thinking to myself, he's never going to be super consistent at college. He needs to get NFL coaching. I mean, he's been in that. He's got the ecosystem of the Mannings. He's listening to high-end conversations about quarterback play since he was six. And I watched them and I said, you know, we can just keep saying, because I don't think Texas is going to win a national championship. They make too many mistakes. Sark

will always make the playoffs. They'll always have NFL guys. But hell, they've got a star receiver, a star quarterback, a star left tackle, a star edge rusher, an offensive coach, and they're losing to Oklahoma. What about this argument? is that certain quarterbacks, they're not going to get significantly better in college. And by the way, a week ago, you could have talked me into Arch Manning staying in college. Absolutely.

But I'm watching him and I'm thinking he's big, he moves, he's smart. He's got a ton of college starts now by the end of the year. Why not just draft him and sit him for a year or two?

Draft him where?

I mean, he'll go first round.

To me, I mean, I know he's made some highlight plays throughout his career, even a couple in this game. The unraveling at the end of the game, I mean, the scramble pick six. Oklahoma has no offense, Colin, like none. Their quarterback is, I would say, one of the quote-unquote bigger busts of the year in college. But he didn't turn it over, and that kind of turned out to be the difference in the game. I mean, Arch, the one pick six, it's like he thought he was Russell Wilson. Coleman, when you watch the behind, he's open streaking across the field, and Arch just air mails it. The pick was obviously really bad. The second one that led to the game-winning field, that just can't happen. You can't turn the ball over.

When you listen to Brady, there are certain things with players, dude, that just to his inner football core, make him want to just like jump out of the booth, you know, because he's been trained the way to think. And a lot of it is, it's all decision-making. It's not, it's like, Tom's like, I couldn't run like Sam or Purdy, but you just can't make that throw in that spot. You're better off just hitting the ground. And he's a younger player, but like you said, this isn't, I watched Keelan Russell last night against Georgia, and you're watching this redshirt freshman against a team full of I.

Mean, I don't know how many like seven, seven guys will get drafted.

Yeah. I mean, probably all 11 of the starters will eventually play in the NFL and you just see like, okay. And as the game went, he just kind of calms down. I do think there's like an innate feel for the position. That's my issue back with Bo Nix. You just watch and you're like, something's off. You can give me the quarterback rating or some of his touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

I almost feel like there's a luck involved because I don't, think that's normal. It's like, you're not going to do this. John Elway had a lot of fourth quarter comebacks. He also had a lot of just normal games, you know? And the thing with Arch is like, okay, he makes a couple of nice passes. And then throughout the course of the game, they do nothing. I mean, their offense throughout the year has been pretty bad and they are clearly spending a lot of money. Camp Coleman is a two, $ 3 million wide receiver who had a pretty good game, but he's getting open all the time and Arch can't hit him. And I think there's just a natural inaccuracy with him. Yeah. Whether he's thinking too much, whether there's

a timing and rhythm to it, but it's just you watch him. I've been watching football to know something's off. I'm not into those type players. Again, it's not his fault that it's his last name and a bunch of people kind of shit on him. But that was pretty bad. I mean, I also think this. They're in the SEC, but it doesn't feel like an SEC game when those two teams play, right? That is a really big deal to those two programs. It means everything.

Well, especially for Venables. And Texas.

For Venables, it was huge. I mean, it was leaking oil. People were down on them. But for Texas, they got a lot of people stroking big time checks for this team to win the national championship. And when they're down to stomp about, you know, Oklahoma has never beat Texas. I saw yesterday when they've been unranked in Texas, been a top 10 team, let alone number one. Now, was Texas a normal number one team? Probably not. But they had earned to be a top five ish team. And they couldn't run away from because they have no offense.

And how often do you have like a quote-unquote first-round quarterback where you clearly have a lot of skill around you and your offense is just bad every single game? Beside the fourth quarter in Ohio State when he just kind of let it rip. But throughout the other games, El Paso, Oklahoma, they just look terrible. So I have a hard time. If this guy's an NFL quarterback– A first round quarterback, you would think they would just have stretches for like two quarters where they're just scoring with the talent he has around him.

Yeah, I watch him. He has a certain anxiety. Bo Nix has this too. Lamar Jackson showed a little bit of this in the playoffs where sometimes with Lamar, you'd be like, oh, he's tight. Lamar is so hard on Lamar. Like Lamar gets so visibly tight. mad at himself. It's like, Lamar, you're great.

It's okay.

But sometimes Lamar on the playoff, she'd be like, oh, he's tight. Bo Nix looks tight. Sometimes Arch does. He looks nervous almost. I remember his first game last year against Ohio State, not this year, last year. He skipped balls from 15 yards. Oh my God. His mechanics, it's all in his head. I think a lot of it is the manning thing, but I'm watching him and I'm like, he's big, he moves, he's smart, he's manning. I'm like, man, maybe it's just better off to go pros and sit for two years and get round-the-clock coaching because I kind of just feel like what he is in college, the longer he stays, the more you see, the more flaws he'll have. He could get hurt. I wonder if this is just sort of what he's going to be even

as a pro, just an inconsistent quarterback. I'm like, I don't mind the picks. Again, Brock Purdy threw a ton in college. Josh Allen was sometimes– I watched him against Oregon and Iowa in college. He was awful. There are quarterbacks who– Brady is a great example. I mean, good God, Russell Wilson, North Carolina State said, we're not even going to start yet. So guys' college routes are different. The college pressure is the college coaching grade. Sark's above average coach.

I just feel like with Art sometimes, there's so much state school of Texas. It almost feels like, God, I wish a small market team. I wish, honestly, like– He would go to Minnesota or something. A franchise we don't talk a lot about. He could go to a franchise and hide a little bit, although he's Arch Manning, so he probably couldn't hide.

I would have thought after the Ohio State win, you kind of get the monkey off your back. Biggest win in the program since some of the peak Mack Brown era. They'd be loose and they'd start rolling because they have talent everywhere. Then they've just looked, I mean, UTSA, the arch was getting killed. Tennessee game was just a slog.

This Oklahoma game, now that Florida's bad, but then they still got Trinidad. They got Mississippi State. The Missouri quarterback's pretty damn good. They play at LSU. I know LSU's not great, but that's going to be a tough environment. I'm sure that game's going to be at night. I just have no confidence in him, in them, as an offense to win these games. And I do think it shows you Speaking of Chesney or Cignetti, these guys that don't have the– even Freeman. Freeman's hype is he's at Notre Dame, but he's not talked about like Lane and Sark and even the Saban guys. I mean, Sark and Lane– The hype machine behind them doesn't equal the results. DeBoer's a good example. I know they lost, but you see

Kalen with a real team. He's going toe-to-toe with Kirby. And this is the thing with Arch. You just watch those two quarterbacks, Stockton's older and Kalen Russell's younger. But as that game's going, both of them are just comfortable playing in that environment, which I can't even imagine. you couldn't even hear yourself think. And I just, I don't see it with, and it's not, I'm not putting it all on arch is the Texas program. It starts with their coach. There's a softness to it. Sark, I think has a lot of parallels with the Lincoln. I even think lane falls under this as well. You know, they're just at their core. These guys are like quarterback kind of softer guys. You see the Kirby thing going viral,

like Kirby. I mean, Kirby would be like shattering concrete if he wasn't working in football. You know, these guys are just wired a little bit. Marcus Freeman was a linebacker at Ohio State. I mean, you see the thing going viral on Mario Cristobal in the pregame talk. How do you think Mario talks to his team and Lane and Sark? The offensive guys just talk differently. They just do.

In college, in the NFL, guys get up for it themselves, especially older veterans. Trent Williams doesn't need a rah-rah speech. It's more about scheme. In college, the motivation and the drive and the focus during the week and the standard And there's a toughness that coaches bring. And I think you see some of these guys that, I mean, Sark, Lane, Lincoln, I mean, those guys are making a combined, what, like $ 40 million? There's just something they can buy, especially Lane and Sark can buy the top defensive guys. They're just not tough guys. They're just not.

Well, I mean, Mike Ditka passed away. I mean, Nick Saban documentary. Look at Saban and all the good press Saban gets in this documentary and look at Mike Ditka passing. What were they? Loud, intense, demanding, relentless, my way or the highway. There is something about the football culture in America.

It simply works. Mike Ditka, nobody thought he was a better player than a coach, even though he helped build a Super Bowl champ. But the reality with Mike is he could be a bully. So could Saban. I mean, Saban would be throwing headsets at 18-year-old, you know, not at the kids, but throwing them during games. Some of it's like, wow, this is over the top. He's barking at Kiffin. The reality of, we talked about Bob Chesney and Kurt Cignetti and Marcus Freeman. The one way to turn around a program, it's always been physicality. And by the way, this is not the NBA. There's no load management.

There's no pandering. You know, Adam Silver's like, my players are miserable. They read Twitter all day. It's so negative. Can you imagine a football coach saying that? Roger Goodell saying that about pro football players. Is that if you look at Kirby Smart, he's a lot more like Saban and Ditka, right? Like, we allow that in football. And frankly, if you look at Saban's ex-players and Ditka's ex-players, they love him. They appreciate it. And I think the American football culture, at its core, you play hurt, you play for, you sacrifice for the team, and pretty eventually unravels. And I think you saw that with Lane this weekend. I think you saw it with Sark this weekend. And I think eventually with Lincoln. I mean, it's a fair criticism,

even against Penn State. The defense didn't look great. I think your point's well taken. There is something about football. I mean, when I watched New England today, And how they have changed in the last two weeks, outplaying Buffalo and destroying the Raiders. That team three weeks ago was an absolute freaking mess. That is a, you know there was some volume at those New England practices. In the hallway.

I mean, you put your head down, you walk past the meeting, keep quiet.

They pushed Buffalo around. They pushed the Raiders around. The way these kind of guys like Saban, Course Correct, or Ditka, or Vrabel, It's always run the ball and be more physical. That they forced Josh Allen to have a horrible day. Kirk Cousins was lost. At its core, ground zero for football at its best. It's kind of inappropriate. It's kind of rough around the edges. Go watch the old Jimmy Johnson stuff where Jimmy's like, I couldn't have done that today.

You could not do that today. So rest in peace to Mike.

I think it's very inappropriate kind of at its core. And that's why I think people like it. And I think most people that, you know, a large percentage of people that played football, the farthest they ever get to high school. And even they, you know, no one watched them play, but they had a similar experience. You get yelled at double days, no water. I mean, the culture for the majority of Americans that played football up into the last like 10, 12 years is, All kind of similar.

Some were just on higher levels, but double days existed when I was in high school. I mean, I think a lot of people have that shared experience of like a lot less people go to the military. but I think, I think it's why a lot of people that played football have appreciation for that. There's just a hierarchy. You listen, you respect it. You kind of respect your opponent. I saw they had a quote today that I think Burkhart said that Mike McDonald used to get like me versus this guy, me versus Kyle, whoever, when I was defensive coordinator.

Then he realized I can't think like that because that's just that you got to just think me versus the opponent. It's almost like Coughlin used to have this like humble and victory because you start feeling yourself. You'll get knocked in the teeth the next week fast. I don't care who you are. So, yeah, I mean, it's that Bama Georgia game. You talk about physicality, too. I mean, that's.

All right, John, you can trade the Rams to beat the Bills at 62%. I had a good day. I like the Rams in this game. Remember, Joe Brady is a rookie coach. San Francisco beat Seattle. Rams cannot afford to fall further behind San Francisco. I think the Rams sat, that team sat and watched that San Francisco-Seattle game. I think they're motivated, inspired by it. I like the Rams tomorrow.

I like the Bills. I think it's a pretty good matchup. Rams secondary, you still can get after. And the number one thing is Stafford can't move. And the Bills defense got some question marks. They can rush the passer, though. They can rush the passer. So if they can get after Stafford, it could be a long night. The volume.
