Grief can stay dry-eyed when a mother dies and then pour out over a dog.
Terry Bradshaw, a professional football player, told Lewis he didn't shed a tear when his mother died. Then his dog James died, and he sobbed uncontrollably in the car with the little casket in the back seat.
It still bothers him. He built his mother a house and still got guilt for traveling too much, so he swallowed the resentment for years and never said a word.
Then he worked it out. “That dog was so sweet to me,” Terry says, and he realized that love and kindness are what break him open.
If you're a people pleaser carrying guilt you never earned, take a look at who gives you kindness. And go easier on yourself about the tears that did or didn't come.
