[SPEAKER_07]: Hello everyone, and welcome to Delta Flyers Journey through the wormhole with Quark Dax and their good friends Tom and Harry. [SPEAKER_07]: Join us as we make our way through episodes of Star Trek Deep Space 9. [SPEAKER_02]: Your host for today are my fellow Trek actors, Terry Farrell, Robert Duncan Donut McNeil, and Special Guest.

[SPEAKER_02]: See, to the eye, to the ROC, so rock loft in himself. [SPEAKER_02]: He's here! [SPEAKER_02]: Who's so excited? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah! [SPEAKER_02]: What an intro. [SPEAKER_02]: Like that intro? [SPEAKER_02]: Like that intro? [SPEAKER_04]: I like that one. [SPEAKER_04]: All right. [SPEAKER_07]: That kid could grow up at to be a handsome man.

[SPEAKER_07]: I'm handsome. [SPEAKER_02]: Handsome. [SPEAKER_02]: Handsome. [SPEAKER_02]: Like that man, too. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know how universally beloved you are by your fellow Star Trek actors. [SPEAKER_00]: Like everybody I talk to. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I love him, too.

[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's a great family that we've got here. [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it's an accident that we were all selected for these roles, you know, I think they have good taste when it comes to who they want to pick and the stories that they want to tell. [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, I'm just fortunate to be a part of this family, this group, and I love all of you guys.

[SPEAKER_07]: I love you too. [SPEAKER_02]: We love you. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we have. [SPEAKER_07]: I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you.

[SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_02]: And I love you. [SPEAKER_07]: And I love you.

[SPEAKER_07]: And I love you.

[SPEAKER_02]: that when we review these episodes, we're reviewing them chronologically, and in the trivia bit, which is part of the section that I handle, I always say, and sarak loftin. [SPEAKER_02]: Unfortunately, does not appear in this episode. [SPEAKER_01]: We say that a lot.

[SPEAKER_02]: And there's a lot of times when we always say, you know, they could have incorporated sarak in this way. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll actually think of things that they could have utilized your character that they weren't. [SPEAKER_02]: Like in this episode, very smart how they [SPEAKER_02]: player, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: And there's other times that we wanted to see you and we couldn't see you because we've been so impressed with what you've put down on film. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we absolutely adore your work. [SPEAKER_02]: We were, you're a consummate professional and such a talented actor. [SPEAKER_02]: We're so happy to have.

[SPEAKER_02]: to be able to be see your work, man, and Robby and I haven't really seen any of these episodes. [SPEAKER_02]: So when we see you, even in small scenes, even when you're in just one single scene, you still not get out of the park. [SPEAKER_02]: So good job. [SPEAKER_02]: And thank you for being here.

[SPEAKER_02]: Joining us today. [SPEAKER_02]: So thank you. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, man. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, you know, I will say that I had the advantage of playing a kid. [SPEAKER_03]: which I already was, so there wasn't much acting that I had to do. [SPEAKER_03]: It was really me being myself and feeling, you know, being present in the moment obviously, you know, but I was surrounded with so many good actors and directors and you know, the crew that we had with [SPEAKER_03]: You know, Jonathan West and you know, our nominal Chris Crosscove, we just had a we had a huge group of people that were all exceptional.

[SPEAKER_03]: And you guys know this too. [SPEAKER_03]: We working with Michael and all these people. [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, it's really easy to look good way out of the cost. [SPEAKER_03]: design is there, when the script writing is there, and when the lighting and audio and all of those things are in your favor, you know, all you have to do is really just say the lines at that point, you know.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, the production value is really high, overall. [SPEAKER_07]: Even for when we critique it, it always looks very good. [SPEAKER_00]: But you brought a real honesty and [SPEAKER_00]: I think was unique for DS9 and in the ingredients you brought were so special and important.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we always love when you're a part of the stories and this one, this episode. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Is this one of your biggest episodes? [SPEAKER_03]: It is one of the biggest episodes. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, especially when you're considering the fact that I'm narrating a lot of it.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yes. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, this episode was directed by Kim Friedman. [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you guys work with Ken, but yeah, a couple of times yeah, she's you know, she's very passionate about her work [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm probably sure that, you know, as a woman who's directing, she had to go up against certain obstacles and fight harder for her own POB in life.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm just sure that that's the things she had to overcome in the industry. [SPEAKER_03]: But when it comes to this episode, you know, we had her on for the podcast to review this and she talked about, [SPEAKER_03]: the lack of faith that she had it mean being able to pull this off.

[SPEAKER_03]: Really? [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Wow. [SPEAKER_07]: But you did it. [SPEAKER_03]: I did. [SPEAKER_03]: And she was, she, she, she, she was in this thing that I did not do the voiceover work as well. [SPEAKER_03]: She was really adamant. [SPEAKER_03]: She said she tried to have the script rewrite.

[SPEAKER_03]: She talked [SPEAKER_03]: opposed my heavy featuring in this episode. [SPEAKER_03]: So. [SPEAKER_07]: Wow. [SPEAKER_07]: Amazing that she was that honest. [SPEAKER_03]: But she never told me at the time. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm glad she did. [SPEAKER_03]: No, because I did. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, my god.

[SPEAKER_03]: She's I don't know. [SPEAKER_03]: They remember. [SPEAKER_07]: No, all that shit. [SPEAKER_07]: It doesn't matter what age you are. [SPEAKER_07]: No one needs to know that. [SPEAKER_07]: stuff. [SPEAKER_07]: It really undermines you as a woman. [SPEAKER_00]: She said the us when she came on Voyager.

[SPEAKER_00]: She said, I've seen your pilot. [SPEAKER_00]: You guys don't know how to shake on the bridge. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you have no idea so bad. [SPEAKER_00]: And she went after us. [SPEAKER_00]: She sent us tapes of you guys shaking. [SPEAKER_02]: And so she criticized this before even meeting us.

[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so that we know we know what you had to deal with But I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm telling you I found this 20 years later. [SPEAKER_01]: I know I just [SPEAKER_01]: I feel bad for you right now. [SPEAKER_01]: I almost feel like she should have let that lie. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, what the heck?

[SPEAKER_01]: She said that. [SPEAKER_01]: I said this earlier. [SPEAKER_07]: I felt like she was like a principal of a school. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes, she's the highest school principal.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yes, in a bad neighborhood. [SPEAKER_02]: In a bad Thank you for clarifying that. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, we're birthday is actually yes. [SPEAKER_00]: We do have birthday starting with Rebecca Leary Rebecca happy birthday on January 1st have a great birthday [SPEAKER_07]: Happy birthday Rebecca.

[SPEAKER_00]: Happy birthday Rebecca. [SPEAKER_02]: Next up we have Francesca Garibaldi. [SPEAKER_02]: January 2nd the day after Rebecca's birthday. [SPEAKER_02]: Happy birthday to Francesca on January 2nd. [SPEAKER_07]: Happy birthday Francesca. [SPEAKER_03]: Happy birthday Francesca Garibaldi. [SPEAKER_02]: Happy birthday Francesco have a great day.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you got lucky Francesco. [SPEAKER_02]: You had Ceracic at a party in this one of the actual way I really wanted you wonderful. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's good. [SPEAKER_02]: My Asian brother from another Asian mother. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, happy birthday to you, my friend. [SPEAKER_02]: It's now time for poetry synopsis.

[SPEAKER_00]: All right, here's my limerick. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll start off with the limerick for noor. [SPEAKER_00]: Noor, the battle to the strong. [SPEAKER_00]: Here we go. [SPEAKER_00]: A distress call, Jake tells Bashir, go ahead. [SPEAKER_00]: He sees heroes cowardice and too many dead. [SPEAKER_00]: Through chaos and fear, Jake's calling grew clear to write the hard truth, not just leave it unsaid.

[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty nice. [SPEAKER_00]: Beautiful. [SPEAKER_07]: All right, you. [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Very hot. [SPEAKER_00]: Little. [SPEAKER_07]: It was a little less doctor-suced this time. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it was a little more in your school of politics. [SPEAKER_02]: I like it. [SPEAKER_02]: It was.

[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Terry, do you have your poem? [SPEAKER_07]: I do. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, go ahead. [SPEAKER_07]: I titled it right of passage. [SPEAKER_07]: Hunger for adventure, I joy to embrace Battlefield of Death. [SPEAKER_07]: He must face. [SPEAKER_07]: Reaction to fear and terror has no logic, pain and struggle of his choices he must face.

[SPEAKER_07]: Reborn a new, a brave young man comes into view. [SPEAKER_00]: It was a little hard. [SPEAKER_00]: A little bit. [SPEAKER_07]: I teach it a little bit. [SPEAKER_02]: with it okay did you get it so good there's very good the end of the night was no we we are really you're so good she always could teach herself where was it going we love it and she's like it really wasn't that good it was just not anything [SPEAKER_02]: We all love that poetry, whether it rhymes or not, it was very effective.

[SPEAKER_07]: It's first Iraq. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_02]: Because usually Terry will give us like five verses or three verses. [SPEAKER_02]: But you got extra verses because you're. [SPEAKER_02]: He did. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow. [SPEAKER_02]: Special treatment. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_07]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_07]: You're a character when I'm quite. [SPEAKER_07]: The journey. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I did. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Here's my whole hike. [SPEAKER_02]: Here we go. [SPEAKER_02]: Here's my hike. [SPEAKER_02]: Or nor the battle to the strong.

[SPEAKER_02]: Here we go. [SPEAKER_02]: But sheer takes huge risk. [SPEAKER_02]: Jake exposed to frontline deaths. [SPEAKER_02]: Loath some hero. [SPEAKER_02]: Hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: Now, I chose that last stanza. [SPEAKER_02]: I went through all these different adjectives. [SPEAKER_02]: I started it with reluctant hero.

[SPEAKER_02]: Then it went to unworthy hero. [SPEAKER_02]: And then it went to finally loads some hero. [SPEAKER_07]: Who's the lowest them hero? [SPEAKER_02]: Well, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt, he felt

[SPEAKER_07]: He's reborn because he looks inside and he tells the truth in his writing. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, yes, yes, he's right. [SPEAKER_07]: That's the end That is the very end But everyone who's listening to us has seen it, right? [SPEAKER_07]: Not everyone Oh, well, you got to go out there and watch this stuff It's some good Give him 20 dollars Okay So listen out [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, did you have, did you notice Iraq when you're at conventions after the pandemic that some fans may maybe TNG people that were massive come up and said, oh, yeah, you know, during the pandemic I finally got around to watching DS9 and I love it.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, I was unbelievable. [SPEAKER_07]: pandemic was good for starters back catalog so yes that's really deep space nine because people had a lot of binge watching time on there oh they did sure did but they also had this kind of hesitation about deep space because we run stations so totally like they didn't watch it before's what they maybe saw the pilot episode and gave up on it [SPEAKER_02]: didn't even go past season one, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: And then the pandemic, they dove into it. [SPEAKER_02]: And they probably apologized to your faces like, we're sorry. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they do that too. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, the pandemic was kind of a dark time for all of us because we were all going through this kind of shared suffering together.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And I also think that may make somebody more receptive to a dark show. [SPEAKER_03]: But I think that's what, you know, [SPEAKER_03]: people would be more receptive to a dark show and something that dealt with topics that were serious in nature, some things we do with a lot of deep issues.

[SPEAKER_03]: And we also cross the threshold on our show when it comes to the topics that people don't discuss on Thanksgiving dinner or whatever, which is politics and religion, right? [SPEAKER_03]: They see some way from politics and religion. [SPEAKER_03]: and deep space nine essentially is a political religious show.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and accept, you know, the context of course is visual and politics and visual and religion, but it still delves into the topic and those difficult kind of stay away from issues. [SPEAKER_03]: But I wanted to add to the group, because everybody had the thing with IQ and the poems and the lyrics.

[SPEAKER_03]: What? [SPEAKER_03]: You're amazing. [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to add mine. [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, my gosh. [SPEAKER_03]: Mine's going to be the Bible verse. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I get out. [SPEAKER_00]: Please do. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, perfect. [SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly from religion to Bible verse.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's the time for those of you who don't know the title of this episode is from a passage in the Bible. [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to read that passage, which is [SPEAKER_03]: Ecclesiastes 9, 11, and that is, I have seen something else under the sun. [SPEAKER_03]: The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, nor the bread to the wise, nor the riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen [SPEAKER_03]: And that's the ultimate foundation of this episode, and the strong, because we've got the title there.

[SPEAKER_03]: And it talks about chance and circumstance, and how these various moments are not new, and it can waver very, [SPEAKER_03]: gently from one direction to the other, from being somebody who is a coward, to being somebody who is a hero. [SPEAKER_03]: And that line is really thin because of those moments and how we calculate and make decisions in very quick real time.

[SPEAKER_03]: Right, um, life and death decisions that you just do intuitively. [SPEAKER_03]: It's part of your nature, right? [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, oh, I hear a gunshot. [SPEAKER_03]: I run or I do. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's like, yeah, it's hard to reprogram to not. [SPEAKER_03]: duck when you hear a gunshot.

[SPEAKER_03]: Right? [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, that has to be learned because you're instinct to run. [SPEAKER_07]: Right. [SPEAKER_07]: And that's a healthy instinct because that's our instinct for survival. [SPEAKER_07]: And your character, you know, it's, you weren't trained. [SPEAKER_07]: You're 18. [SPEAKER_07]: There's a lot of things we make.

[SPEAKER_07]: We all, as we grow, have to make these kinds of mistakes to have self-reflection to make better decisions later. [SPEAKER_07]: The next time we're in that situation, but it takes experience and I think a lot of loving kindness to yourself. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that line stood up. [SPEAKER_03]: Me too, I made tea.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you're like, I know everything. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm ready. [SPEAKER_04]: I made tea. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so the story is by Bryce R. Parker, teleplay by Renee Eshavaria, directed by Kim Friedman and let's go through some of these guest stars. [SPEAKER_02]: If anyone has any comments about any of these people, please chime in, Andrew Kovovatt as Kirby.

[SPEAKER_02]: He won a daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal of Paul Ryan on as the world turns. [SPEAKER_02]: Which is so far up on I know the most about because that's the one that my parents watch when I was a kid so they love that show That's funny. [SPEAKER_07]: Is wait can I ask is that did Andrew play the character?

[SPEAKER_00]: Like the other kid. [SPEAKER_00]: He was the other Yeah, I thought it was great too [SPEAKER_07]: It was really good pairing with your energy too. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think both of your personalities were you just were great Perfect chemistry between the two of you. [SPEAKER_02]: I kept against rock was like finally someone close to my age I can act with I He was a little excited there good thing.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, all right. [SPEAKER_02]: We also have Karen Austin as Kalandra Karen played a series regular [SPEAKER_02]: Court clerk Lanna Wagner in the 80s series night court But she was only there for the first 10 episodes and that is when the show asked her to leave because she had bills pausing and Effecting her and we remember Robbie Marvin Ross had bills pausing.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: When you have you don't have control of your muscles in your face and yeah And you if you recall Marvin [SPEAKER_02]: was unable to come to work for a bit of that. [SPEAKER_02]: And when he did Marvin got it. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's some positive feedback on Karen Austin.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, trivia. [SPEAKER_00]: Karen Austin was in my very first short film that I made in 1980s. [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, what? [SPEAKER_00]: The battery? [SPEAKER_00]: The battery. [SPEAKER_00]: She built the mom. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my gosh. [SPEAKER_00]: I met Karen through sag.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think I was at a sag event or something. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, remember, but I [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she was the judge. [SPEAKER_07]: She's the main dog. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the main dog. [SPEAKER_07]: So talented, beautiful lady. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, she was in your first short film that I met in 1996.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she played Joshua Jackson's mom, Josh Jackson. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my god. [SPEAKER_02]: Did she tell you that she worked on D.S. [SPEAKER_02]: line? [SPEAKER_02]: Did you know that? [SPEAKER_00]: I think so. [SPEAKER_00]: I think so. [SPEAKER_00]: I can't imagine that. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you did your show in 1990, this was done in [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, so right around this right right now now.

[SPEAKER_02]: Right now. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so that's she also gave the great performance in this episode. [SPEAKER_02]: She was One the role of John Candy's wife in the 1985 film Summer Runtel. [SPEAKER_02]: So that's a big role too. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I thought I recognized her. [SPEAKER_02]: We have Mark Holtin as the bolly and orderly.

[SPEAKER_02]: He has a few more. [SPEAKER_02]: He was great. [SPEAKER_02]: He was funny. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Who's funny? [SPEAKER_02]: Bolly is always funny. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: We are. [SPEAKER_02]: They are. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's funny that you guys think he's funny because one of his main credits or biggest credits is in P.E.

[SPEAKER_02]: P.E. [SPEAKER_02]: Herman's big adventure movies where... Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: My goodness. [SPEAKER_02]: Next up, we have Lisa Lord as nurse. [SPEAKER_02]: Lisa Lord was actually married to casting director Mark Teshner. [SPEAKER_02]: That should be a familiar name too, you know, yes, Jeff Brown as Enson.

[SPEAKER_02]: He was just labeled. [SPEAKER_02]: He was just given the credit of Enson. [SPEAKER_02]: That's it. [SPEAKER_07]: It's like the guy who shot myself. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jeff Brown from New York. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a theater actor. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, great. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: Did you work with him there? [SPEAKER_00]: No, but we, you know, there's those people that you always saw on the waiting room. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll just give you a circuit space. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It was one of those guys I always saw on the waiting room.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So you. [SPEAKER_07]: She walked in. [SPEAKER_00]: She walked in. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_07]: When you're with the nice actors, I miss that because it was fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm just imagine you walking in and have gone. [SPEAKER_02]: Robby and you're like Jeb and that's it.

[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Danny Goldring as Burke has Burke that really important scene They're the oh my gosh He was outstanding. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, he really was I believed him. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I just too. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I bet I bet when he died it was like holy cow It was like we were in a film.

[SPEAKER_07]: I loved it. [SPEAKER_07]: He was so good. [SPEAKER_04]: His last words was like it doesn't work that way kid [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I wouldn't have preferred him to go. [SPEAKER_02]: His last words were face up that because he Yeah, he did want to die face down. [SPEAKER_02]: I just that's a good job.

[SPEAKER_02]: A daddy gold ring. [SPEAKER_02]: We have some co stars. [SPEAKER_02]: We have a couple of co stars here. [SPEAKER_02]: L Alexander as female guard and Greg Christopher Smith as male guard. [SPEAKER_02]: And that rounds out our cast. [SPEAKER_02]: There we go, right trivia. [SPEAKER_02]: Here's a little bit trivia.

[SPEAKER_02]: The working title of this episode was portrait of a life, which is doesn't have the same gravity on the battle to the strong, so portrait of a life was their working title. [SPEAKER_02]: The title of this episode comes from the Bible and as is so well spoken by Sarak. [SPEAKER_02]: Ecclesiastes chapter 9 verse 11.

[SPEAKER_02]: The original idea of this episode was that Jake and aspiring writer would have Experiences similar to those of Ernest Hemingway during more one and I did not know that Hemingway was on the on the front lines of of the war at that point me neither That's a little news to me But it's not like I'm a history buff about writers So right Didn't be that surprised.

[SPEAKER_07]: I don't know that [SPEAKER_02]: The original draft of the teleplay, the story was actually set in a Cardassian hospital on a planet under siege by the clingsons, which would have added all these other extra elements, because if you recall, Robbie, when we watched some of the earlier episodes, it is...

[SPEAKER_02]: It's been said that on Planet Cardassia, the women are the ones that are doing medicine and science. [SPEAKER_02]: The men are not trusted in those fields. [SPEAKER_02]: So that would have been an extra layer of sort of prejudice, yeah, that they would have to get over, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Because all the Cardassians, women in that hospital would be [SPEAKER_02]: freaked out that there's two men trying to help out like what are these guys doing so That would take away from the story about.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think this was a very much cleaner story Yeah, yeah, this was a makeup to make up. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but that's that would have been exactly They said the pivot happened because of budget budget Terry reason. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they had just They had just and what do we see just two clingons?

[SPEAKER_02]: at the end. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, very few. [SPEAKER_02]: And when they shot in a boat. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, they shot apocalypse rising. [SPEAKER_02]: They had so many alien extras. [SPEAKER_02]: They realized how expensive that was. [SPEAKER_02]: And they said, you know what? [SPEAKER_02]: We need to save our money for the upcoming episode trials and tribulations, which I guess they had a pretty big budget for that one.

[SPEAKER_02]: So they scratched you. [SPEAKER_02]: Wait. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Thanks for the television history. [SPEAKER_02]: They completely scrapped the whole Kardashian ankle of it. [SPEAKER_02]: So you guys like it better the way it is then. [SPEAKER_02]: I do. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I did too. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about it. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's jump into a robbery. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's jump into our story. [SPEAKER_00]: We start off in a runabout. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake's following Bashir to this conference where Bashir was speaking because Jake's going to write an article on him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And in the scene in the runabout, they're headed back to DS9. [SPEAKER_00]: Bashir's rambling a lot of science talk. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake is bored. [SPEAKER_00]: does not understand any of the science talk. [SPEAKER_00]: I loved it. [SPEAKER_00]: It's very funny. [SPEAKER_07]: I was grateful he didn't because I was like, what the heck is he talking about?

[SPEAKER_07]: So when when did you relate to Jagley? [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, I think we were all in Jake shoes in that moment. [SPEAKER_03]: And Sid had a lot of techno babble to commemorate what he did. [SPEAKER_03]: That's hard. [SPEAKER_03]: That for him. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he doesn't know what the hell he's saying, doesn't he?

[SPEAKER_00]: But he delivers a very confident leg. [SPEAKER_07]: Oh my God, he did such a great job. [SPEAKER_00]: And I heard a rumor, I think Arman is mentioned this before, that Sid would learn his lines. [SPEAKER_00]: Like he would be reading it off the page and rehearsal and then somehow he had a memory.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like he could remember his lines by the time you were filming. [SPEAKER_00]: Is that how you remember it? [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he was always ready when we were rehearsing. [SPEAKER_03]: So I, I don't know what his process was to, yeah, we had ready. [SPEAKER_02]: We heard it both sit and call them or whizzes at learning their lines.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's learning your lines very good last second and the night. [SPEAKER_07]: I felt it with, with, with call on my felt it because, yeah, there were times it was just the two of us in a scene and I would get so thrown off because I wanted rehearsal to get my lines down. [SPEAKER_00]: In column was still reading, but then he'd be ready.

[SPEAKER_00]: This, I think, uh, he'd be ready by the time you're filming. [SPEAKER_00]: He somehow had memorized everything. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a pro. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he has a pro. [SPEAKER_07]: He is a pro. [SPEAKER_07]: This, but it makes it hard when rehearsal, if you're all kind of. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, everybody's in a different year.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I just want to say about this scene. [SPEAKER_02]: What stuck out the most was the narration begins the voice over the voice of the video. [SPEAKER_07]: Which I thought we did an amazing job of but we don't hear that. [SPEAKER_02]: And when we hear a VO, it's usually, um, uh, here's my, capture of the VO blog and then they show an exterior of the station.

[SPEAKER_02]: But not, well, this is all a wonder years. [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's the, the narration is how I, and I see it. [SPEAKER_07]: So our detector, it hasn't been done in DS9. [SPEAKER_02]: And it was never done in Voyager. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to think, Robbie, do you recall? [SPEAKER_00]: Or I just think my character in 30 days was writing letters back home to his dad while I was Oh, so you did have a little bit of an average By your voice over there.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but it's it's rare for so rare. [SPEAKER_02]: That's stood out like a Sourtham in a way. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like my goodness. [SPEAKER_07]: That's very that's why I loved it I loved it. [SPEAKER_07]: It didn't throw me at all. [SPEAKER_07]: I loved it. [SPEAKER_02]: It's throw me.

[SPEAKER_02]: I just thought it was edgy. [SPEAKER_07]: I thought wow They they really did that did you do all of that After you filmed everything [SPEAKER_03]: Me, yeah, I did all the way through everything. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, very looping afterwards. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, Judy would read the lines.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, camera. [SPEAKER_07]: So within your head. [SPEAKER_03]: It was in my head. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but like I said, you know, there was resistance for me doing the voiceover. [SPEAKER_03]: I also was a big fan of the wonder year. [SPEAKER_03]: So watching the wonder years watching Fred Savage and yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: Dan Morea just watching those guys do that show was a big thrill for me and my child, and so having the opportunity to Do my own version of it was like oh wonder here. [SPEAKER_02]: That's the first thing I thought when I was perfect perfect man I'd love that you got to Fred Savage it. [SPEAKER_02]: I Fred Savage did man [SPEAKER_00]: Jake's got the voice over.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I like the voice over because he's writing this whole story is about the writing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: He's off at the end with what he's written. [SPEAKER_00]: So I I loved it, but he's he does not understand what Bashir saying at all. [SPEAKER_00]: And then they get a distress call.

[SPEAKER_00]: Klingons are fighting in this Federation colony. [SPEAKER_00]: It's Agina on five. [SPEAKER_00]: They need help. [SPEAKER_00]: Bashir doesn't know what to do. [SPEAKER_00]: He thinks it's [SPEAKER_00]: For God's sake. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm a man. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a man. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm a man.

[SPEAKER_06]: I've seen war on the station. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a bad answer because he's like, you're too young to die. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, I'm 18. [SPEAKER_07]: I'm already not to die. [SPEAKER_07]: It sounds like you're signing up to go to war in the 16. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And then, and then he says he follows that one up with, I'm a Cisco, like in a, like, [SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah, I thought that was interesting.

[SPEAKER_03]: Definitely, you know, it's funny because, you know, at the time I'm young, I'm obviously the 18-year-old in this episode, but as an adult now with my own child who's a teenager, I simplifies [SPEAKER_03]: with myself who wants to get into a frontline war position, you know, the 18-year-old mean would sympathize more with the younger J.

[SPEAKER_03]: And be totally up for the adventure. [SPEAKER_03]: Like, yeah, what's up? [SPEAKER_03]: Let's go. [SPEAKER_03]: That's why you hear about kids, then. [SPEAKER_03]: backpack across Europe at, you know, 20 years old and the hitchhiking across, you know, Germany or whatever it is. [SPEAKER_03]: And they're like, what did that?

[SPEAKER_03]: Because because they're fearless and they don't have any concept of, you know, like, [SPEAKER_04]: anything bad could possibly happen, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Because you're in protected pretty much all of your life living at home with your dad, although you've seen really bad stuff.

[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, Jake has seen some really bad stuff. [SPEAKER_03]: I have seen some bad stuff. [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you know, Jake had a very, always say this, Jake's probably had the most suffering in in start track because if you think about it, [SPEAKER_03]: 100% and they're literally in another way and I don't want to get that.

[SPEAKER_07]: What happened to you? [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I haven't seen it either. [SPEAKER_07]: I haven't seen it either. [SPEAKER_07]: Terry hasn't seen the last series. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm excited about that. [SPEAKER_03]: So there's a lot of stories. [SPEAKER_07]: I'm worried they'll be tears. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh God.

[SPEAKER_03]: So Jake is a, you know, he goes through a lot of situations that are tenuous and painful and he has to overcome these. [SPEAKER_03]: and what is great to look back and reflect upon his character and how it was written is the enthusiasm and joy that he carries himself within life. [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't have a victim sadness to his aura.

[SPEAKER_03]: He's not walking around saying, you know, I'm my mom died and nobody wants me and I have my friends. [SPEAKER_03]: He's actually an optimistic person and he's like, hey, I can make friends with that for any guy and I can do this and hey, why don't I interview this guy? [SPEAKER_03]: He's a work criminal, but maybe he'll interview with me.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, there's an optimism to Jake in general, you know, that's... [SPEAKER_07]: And it devtails with the relationship you have with your father on the show, you know, and I love so much that Avery fought for your relationship to be at healthy one and and know it combines with real life too, which makes it even more heart swelling and amazing, but I love [SPEAKER_07]: your relationships so much on the show.

[SPEAKER_07]: And even when he's not there, it feels like he's there. [SPEAKER_07]: I got really emotional and so many scenes. [SPEAKER_07]: And I think a lot of it too had to do with now being a mom. [SPEAKER_07]: And knowing what it feels like to have to just take a deep breath and go everything's [SPEAKER_07]: It's beyond my control.

[SPEAKER_07]: It's beyond my control. [SPEAKER_07]: He's out there in the world now. [SPEAKER_07]: You're almost there, but not quite. [SPEAKER_07]: I know that Robbie gets it, too. [SPEAKER_07]: It's once they, when they're young, it's like your skin comes off. [SPEAKER_07]: You're so like, you feel so naked that you can't protect them anymore.

[SPEAKER_07]: And you wish it was skinning your knee. [SPEAKER_07]: I wish all you need was a band aid. [SPEAKER_03]: And I love that you say that because that's [SPEAKER_03]: I thought you have seen with Cisco really reflected a great kind of intuition that you have as DAX where you have so many lived experiences that you can bring to the table and when we go through things we feel alone and we also feel like nobody really knows what we're going through whatever that thing is, you know.

[SPEAKER_03]: But the empathy that DAX has because of the lived experiences, I actually know what you're going through, like, exactly, you know, I have an exact story that goes along with it. [SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's what DAX, and you brought to that scene in that moment there. [SPEAKER_03]: But again, when we go through this spectrum of light, [SPEAKER_03]: And we look at things from the lens of our youth and the transition and start to look at it through a different lens.

[SPEAKER_03]: I think this episode encapsulates the different lenses that we put on when we observe things. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think when we're young, we do feel alone, and until we really do, it takes a long time, but the more experiences we have, the more we realize we're not, the more we share, the more we talk, and the more we experience other people's experiences we, hey.

[SPEAKER_07]: I'm not alone in this, I'm responsible for how I handle it and how turning regrets into lessons and apologies when they can pop up in your life. [SPEAKER_07]: You can go back and say, I'm so sorry, I was not in a good place at that time or whatever that is. [SPEAKER_07]: But thank goodness for maturity, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that that's one thing that Star Trek has done for so many people when people have felt alone.

[SPEAKER_00]: Star Trek has been there to kind of reassure them and comfort them and the Star Trek community of fans of actors all of it, I mean. [SPEAKER_00]: It's been a role. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Rich builder and Kenny. [SPEAKER_07]: We are. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: It's how we are together with the fans and the fans are together with each other and without the fans, we wouldn't have gotten to get to know each other as well as we do years after the show.

[SPEAKER_07]: We've been building our relationships for 30 years. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, 30 plus. [SPEAKER_07]: So what a gift the fans have given us because they want to meet us, we are connected always. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: It's just the most delightful, wonderful thing in life to have this.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so it's a symbiosis, it's symbiosis. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, that's the word. [SPEAKER_07]: It's all of us to make it work. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the sheer, the sheer does agree at the end of the scene. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, OK, he heads down to help on at this hospital.

[SPEAKER_00]: But he goes back to, he goes back to talking about the science stuff that was boring Jake. [SPEAKER_03]: By the way, just for the record, raise my hand, just like I want to intervene a quick [SPEAKER_03]: if my kid goes with you to go on one thing like to the grocery store. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_04]: And then all of a sudden you make the decision to take him to the war zone. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Don't come back. [SPEAKER_04]: Don't come back. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to say it. [SPEAKER_03]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_04]: You've got to call me. [SPEAKER_04]: This is the future. [SPEAKER_04]: Call me.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I need permission. [SPEAKER_04]: We haven't got to get a permission. [SPEAKER_07]: How could we call him? [SPEAKER_07]: This can't be our Jake. [SPEAKER_03]: It can't be on Jake. [SPEAKER_03]: He cannot. [SPEAKER_03]: just all the rise. [SPEAKER_03]: No, you're absolutely right.

[SPEAKER_03]: You're absolutely right. [SPEAKER_03]: You're absolutely right. [SPEAKER_04]: You're in care of Bashir Bashir. [SPEAKER_04]: I have to get the, you know, he's got to get the parents approval. [SPEAKER_00]: Perhaps. [SPEAKER_07]: But also as we have seen Bashir does not have that kind of maturity when it comes to relationships about work.

[SPEAKER_00]: but about adult things, adult things. [SPEAKER_00]: He can be very immature, yes. [SPEAKER_07]: And this is a very good example of him sort of being in his kid head, not thinking it through an adult way. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: I like that perspective, Teraphore. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even think about that.

[SPEAKER_02]: You're right. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, he's not being bad. [SPEAKER_07]: He just isn't mature enough to have worked it all out. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Cisco will explain it to you when they get bad. [SPEAKER_00]: It will just be well. [SPEAKER_00]: He will see well. [SPEAKER_00]: Give him a lesson.

[SPEAKER_00]: being a mature. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: So we go to ops next. [SPEAKER_00]: Quark is attempting to make decaffinated wreck to genome. [SPEAKER_07]: Quark did you know I love that. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_07]: That would be great. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I was thinking.

[SPEAKER_00]: Taste test. [SPEAKER_00]: While she's pregnant, [SPEAKER_00]: Miles doesn't want her to have all this caffeine, she hates it, it's disgusting, Miles tries it, he agrees, it's disgusting, but he wants to get her off caffeine, Dax and Kira are a little offended that Miles thinks he's in control of this pregnancy, that it's his pregnancy somehow.

[SPEAKER_00]: Um, she defends herself. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't drink that much a couple of day. [SPEAKER_00]: Quark does comment that Ferengi consider pregnancy a rental. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, [SPEAKER_00]: My husband's a leasy, he has rights, he has rights, he's a leasy, he has my goodness.

[SPEAKER_00]: Cisco arrives, he's worried about Jake, we see he's worried, because he now knows Bashir has taken him into a war zone, which Sirak has some thoughts about this. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure it's going to go, I'm sure it's going to go, I'm sure it's going to go just cannot wait and see the shirt when he's back.

[SPEAKER_03]: I just can't wait to see it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, go to my office or whatever. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and he can't go. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's go to the sound booth cargo bay where he is. [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, but you're want to think his face. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I want to go back just a little bit because [SPEAKER_04]: O'Brien says, it's not the first baby I've had, you know?

[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yes, yes, yes. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, and they look at it like, uh, you're not the one having the baby better. [SPEAKER_04]: So don't give me a license on it. [SPEAKER_03]: All right. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, my gosh. [SPEAKER_03]: I thought that was great. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[SPEAKER_07]: And it's the only woman in the room who's had a baby of the four of us. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes. [SPEAKER_07]: Um, right. [SPEAKER_07]: It is. [SPEAKER_07]: Big those extra nine months of having the baby inside of you. [SPEAKER_07]: The baby, your baby inside of you. [SPEAKER_07]: you know, their cells are still.

[SPEAKER_07]: My son cells are still in my body. [SPEAKER_07]: Your cells are in your mom's bodies. [SPEAKER_07]: And it's part of the connection. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, you can't help it. [SPEAKER_07]: They were in you. [SPEAKER_07]: So part of them is always in you. [SPEAKER_07]: Isn't that amazing? [SPEAKER_07]: Look, I read it in one of those science magazines.

[SPEAKER_07]: I didn't just get it off Instagram. [SPEAKER_07]: So, yeah, so the connection is very intense right from that for I can't remember what it's called the first movement. [SPEAKER_07]: It's there's a special name for it, but it feels like there's a little butterfly in your tummy to when they're turning and you're like, oh, that was an elbow.

[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, that was awesome. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: That experience is out of this world. [SPEAKER_07]: And I wish you guys could experience it because it's such a extraordinary [SPEAKER_07]: miracle that you, there aren't words for a lot of it. [SPEAKER_07]: It's a lot of feelings and I just wish you could because it's life changing to have that experience.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was just going to share Megan has always said that she loved the process of being pregnant more than anything else. [SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't really understand that, but you're giving me more perspective on that as well right now. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, a baby's growing in you and you feel like you have this privilege, this honor of helping it grow and nourishing it and loving it even though it's inside you and you're not holding it yet.

[SPEAKER_03]: Right. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm very good about it because there's also a glow that comes along with it. [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why it is, but when a woman is pregnant, there's a glow about her face. [SPEAKER_07]: Can I tell you biologically why? [SPEAKER_07]: You have more blood cells.

[SPEAKER_07]: Your body is making more blood. [SPEAKER_07]: So you are, like, slushed a little more. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, yes, yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you think Seroc that Miles O'Brien had that glow? [SPEAKER_00]: Because it's not that good. [SPEAKER_00]: Excellent segue, Ravi. [SPEAKER_00]: Miles really thought he had the glow.

[SPEAKER_04]: I don't like you. [SPEAKER_07]: He thought he had the glow. [SPEAKER_07]: He thought it was all about him. [SPEAKER_00]: I did like at the end of this scene, though, how data sort of. [SPEAKER_00]: She references this connection to Cisco when Cisco says, Well, the ferrogate's going to get there after tomorrow, and they'll leave right away.

[SPEAKER_00]: Dax basically says, oh, so Thursday they'll be back. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that doesn't give you one's time to snoop through Jake's things So it's a little bit of that like parent. [SPEAKER_00]: She's been a parent. [SPEAKER_00]: She's had that that life experience Cisco's a parent Trying to lift him up, so it's not so.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Don't go down the right area about it, too He was like, oh, that's a good one. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, through his face. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah You see that register on his face a little bit [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we've all been there as a parent I need to go through some things we go back on there run about and I did notice in this establishing shot the planet surface was very bumpy bumpy you're like [SPEAKER_00]: It felt 3D in a way that we don't always see these planets.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, physics. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a great form of orbit. [SPEAKER_02]: It looked bumpy. [SPEAKER_00]: From orbit. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you notice that? [SPEAKER_07]: I did. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I felt like textured in it. [SPEAKER_07]: I felt like, oh, are they leaving you the run about above the surface?

[SPEAKER_07]: How would they do that? [SPEAKER_07]: Can they be in themselves down? [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, that's what I was thinking when I saw that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: That does not look like a good landing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Look like a rough planet for sure. [SPEAKER_00]: but they arrived down on the planet uh... the wounded or they arrived at the planet they're still in orbit uh... the wounded have all been moved underground with this battle going on and they're going to have to set down the runabout and walk about a kilometer [SPEAKER_00]: to get to the tunnel entrance, to help everybody.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Bashir warns Jake, it might get rough down there, but Jake still is like, I'll be fine. [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't expect he's, this is gonna be hard for him at all, he's excited. [SPEAKER_00]: He's 18, he's 18. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm a man. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I think he just has no idea, right?

[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, oh, it's going to be cool. [SPEAKER_05]: It's naive. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: After work ends, going to be, you know, give me 30 C Cs of that and this and it's just going to be cool. [SPEAKER_03]: Like the ER episode. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, and then, and then it's like it becomes real.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we go inside the cave and it's chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: And the shooting style changed. [SPEAKER_00]: It's all this handheld work down there. [SPEAKER_07]: Super cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Great blocking movement and energy. [SPEAKER_00]: The sheer is going right to work.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jake is immediately overwhelmed by all this. [SPEAKER_02]: Jocelyn, he's being jostled around right now. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: These people are banging into him trying to get to help people and he sees this injured man on the floor. [SPEAKER_00]: J. [SPEAKER_00]: Calls for help, you know, this man needs help, and we meet Colandra, the doctor, Karen Austin down there.

[SPEAKER_00]: She scans this guy that J. is talking about, and she says he's gone, he's too far gone. [SPEAKER_00]: and leaves doesn't help him. [SPEAKER_02]: Up until this point, all the episodes that we've seen with Jake and it he has not been privy to anything like this. [SPEAKER_02]: He's seen stress and drama happen on a station, but not injuries where people are dying in front of him and then later.

[SPEAKER_07]: Not right next to him. [SPEAKER_02]: Not right, exactly, not right next to him, maybe. [SPEAKER_07]: And I, what you were talking about the handheld, it was like, the way they were shooting it felt to me, like that was Jake's POV because the chaos, it was so well done like that it was taking what's in his head and shooting it that way, I was just so excited how this whole thing transpires and goes from shooting to kind of a montage to going back or doing [SPEAKER_07]: and then a montage showing time passing and then back into the scenes.

[SPEAKER_07]: It was I just thought it was really well done that whole this whole sequence. [SPEAKER_07]: This is the beginning of that whole sequence. [SPEAKER_03]: And the idea that also that it was a cave made it feel like it was a makeshift type triage like it was this like, you know, just pop up.

[SPEAKER_03]: We need to pop up emergency room somewhere because we got [SPEAKER_03]: you know, victims that are coming in with a battlefield. [SPEAKER_03]: So I felt like it did feel authentic definitely the action in the blocking and the process back and forth, Stanley, and I added to the element of chaos.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'll add a little comment directly is that in the earlier scene with the Quarctogino, I don't know if you guys remember, but it was pretty static, everybody was just kind of standing. [SPEAKER_00]: And I remember as I watched that scene going, boy, this is not really moving much. [SPEAKER_00]: Then we got to this scene and I immediately my director had said, Oh, that's why she did it that way.

[SPEAKER_00]: So this was a contrast. [SPEAKER_00]: So everything in the station is under control. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: Formal. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a tight lock down and this is like, ah, [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so it's a it's a great contrast. [SPEAKER_00]: It was a smart choice from Kim to do with that.

[SPEAKER_03]: But let me add that. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not the biggest fan of trying to fit six people in the shot. [SPEAKER_07]: No, that's a good thing. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I just think of us in that shot was that was a very tight. [SPEAKER_07]: opening shot. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, people don't even stand that close together really.

[SPEAKER_03]: They think people want a little space. [SPEAKER_04]: No, we don't. [SPEAKER_04]: Lean over like hover over. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I need a little like arm space. [SPEAKER_03]: So I felt like when you see those stack shots, your like Zen natural position that people would be able to position.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: But the two shot of me and Kira made sense, but that the guy would be that close no way and not those four guys, not that. [SPEAKER_07]: Not that group, they all want to be away from each other. [SPEAKER_07]: It's so funny. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all right. [SPEAKER_00]: We go we go back to the cave.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jake goes over to help Bashir who's working on a wounded Enson and the Enson is freaking out. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a job brown. [SPEAKER_00]: I think right. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, the Enson says he stepped over a Klingon in the middle of this battle. [SPEAKER_00]: He's trying to tell this sort of heroic story [SPEAKER_00]: And Bashir scans and it says, this is a phaser burn, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: This is a, you know, if this is like a star face, a Starfleet. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm just trying to get super defensive. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and he's trying to cover it up. [SPEAKER_00]: And he tells Jake that, you know, he doesn't understand that his friends were hurt. [SPEAKER_00]: He freaked out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he ends the scene there kind of saying what am I going to do? [SPEAKER_00]: What have I done? [SPEAKER_00]: What have I done? [SPEAKER_00]: So you can see his shame, which is kind of where Jake's going to get later. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, isn't that the point of them putting this in? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we call for shadow. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And it was great. [SPEAKER_03]: I thought that moment was great because there was a real disappointed look on Bashir space. [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you caught that too, but Bashir's like, you know, I want to help you.

[SPEAKER_03]: He was disgusted. [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I want to help you, but [SPEAKER_03]: this is a self-inflicted world and he kind of gave that like shaking his head like I'm just so disgusted right now that I don't even want to deal with you. [SPEAKER_03]: Let me move on to somebody who really needs my health type of energy and I think that [SPEAKER_03]: Jake was needed to be there for him in that moment because there was something revealed in that conversation where or maybe it was later, but it felt like he was not happy with even being, you know, being alive out of this circumstance.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, because he had so much shame. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think also, this is a real example of someone who was trained to do the job and did it self-inflicted act of cowardice to get out of it, which is a complete contrast to having a reaction like Jake has when he's faced with terror.

[SPEAKER_07]: Fear, real hardcore, fear, and terror where your instincts [SPEAKER_07]: how this can look when you make a decision out of fear. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and also that, you know, Jake's untrained, completely untrained and has this experience, but this is a soldier who's got all the training and still inside of that training is unprepared.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, to deal with this. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's kind of saying this is it's unpredictable how people are going to respond in this kind of situation even when they're trained even when they're trained, but that scene is cowardice, which I don't I don't believe is what Jake does. [SPEAKER_00]: That's fear.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's fear. [SPEAKER_07]: He's a kid. [SPEAKER_07]: It's visceral fear. [SPEAKER_07]: It's blind fear. [SPEAKER_07]: You can't think. [SPEAKER_03]: I think they both emanate from a level of fear. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Right. [SPEAKER_03]: We're reacting in a situation in which we're fearful.

[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not trained to be there back up for my fellow soldiers and whatnot. [SPEAKER_03]: So that's a different scenario. [SPEAKER_03]: and it's kind of different. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like that Bible word. [SPEAKER_00]: To me, it reminds me of that Bible verse. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you can be smart, you can be brave, you can be all this.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the, it's the moment circumstances and the chance of it all. [SPEAKER_00]: you may feel prepared to be in battle or to be the smartest one in the room or whatever, but there's going to be moments where chance just doesn't just come out. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, let's not lose sight of the fact that this ensign is not that much older than Jake.

[SPEAKER_02]: If you think about it, he could be four years older. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, three or four years older. [SPEAKER_02]: So similar boat, and I also want to say Sarak earlier your comment about the unnatural [SPEAKER_02]: feel free to nitpick, because usually Armin Schimmerman is our resident nitpick or he'll kill you.

[SPEAKER_02]: They'll like grab stuff and just shred it apart. [SPEAKER_02]: So if there's something that you want a nitpick, that's more than welcome. [SPEAKER_02]: So just that there are. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I don't know how many times you guys probably been in a shot where the director is telling you, can you move a little bit closer and you're like, yeah, you want me to spend this close?

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's like, oh, great. [SPEAKER_04]: No, it doesn't. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we gone start start track close talking is what we call it. [SPEAKER_03]: We see it over and over again. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: That's everybody's guilty of that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: Because they're trying to get the shot. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, or save money time. [SPEAKER_07]: We got to go. [SPEAKER_03]: We got to go. [SPEAKER_07]: We're going to cram you all together. [SPEAKER_07]: Guess what? [SPEAKER_07]: It's three shots and we're out.

[SPEAKER_00]: Bolion tells Jake to get out of the way, move out of here, and Jake goes off to the side. [SPEAKER_00]: He writes for a minute, writes about sorting the wounded, which I thought was a nice way of describing that, capturing that moment in his voice over, and then Kirby comes in, has another injured patient who needs plasma, tells Jake to help him.

[SPEAKER_00]: and then the patient grabs Jake and sort of holds him close and then falls back and Jake has covered him blood. [SPEAKER_00]: So it was a real visceral. [SPEAKER_00]: It was. [SPEAKER_07]: I'm glad they used a lot of blood on that because it wouldn't have read otherwise. [SPEAKER_02]: And if they shot that two years ago, it would have been even more copious amounts of blood included.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But for the time, that was huge. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm saying now, if it was strange new worlds, he would be covered in, like, there would be a jugular, you know, shooting out. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay. [SPEAKER_07]: Okay. [SPEAKER_07]: Not our show.

[UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: All right. [SPEAKER_04]: I just got this shirt. [SPEAKER_03]: That's all I would think of. [SPEAKER_07]: I know you're not going to watch out. [SPEAKER_07]: No. [SPEAKER_07]: I thought it was germs. [SPEAKER_07]: I was like, oh. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Don't let any, don't let any part of your body touch that.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you went to germs and I loved it. [SPEAKER_02]: I did. [SPEAKER_02]: This is a rockway to, or I clearly think can't even get this day. [SPEAKER_01]: Try kidding. [SPEAKER_02]: I will not work on this shirt. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Can you see how it was inside the pan like this?

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: He's going to talk to me. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It's like goodness. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, buddy. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: A little time passes. [SPEAKER_00]: We see Jake helping Kirby carry a stretcher in. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake almost knocks over an IV stand, which I loved and talent.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're holding with your legs. [SPEAKER_00]: You're like very impressive. [SPEAKER_00]: Kirby's impressed. [SPEAKER_00]: He says you're hired. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's get dressed and another little time dissolve. [SPEAKER_00]: And now Jake is wearing those trekscrubs. [SPEAKER_00]: The cool screen.

[SPEAKER_07]: Would you look good in? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_00]: I like the script. [SPEAKER_00]: They were really cool. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Scrubs look good. [SPEAKER_07]: Good job, Bob Blackman. [SPEAKER_00]: More chaos here, Jake checks on a patient who is dead and Kirby and Jake carry this body to the morgue that has packed filled with bodies.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they're moving patients around. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of dissolves in here just to add up all of the deaths, you know, this is the montage you feel that I'm talking about, where it's a great, it's like, wow. [SPEAKER_07]: It feels like it's, [SPEAKER_07]: It's 20 hours of work.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And we see he gets in these nice great looking scrubs as we mentioned. [SPEAKER_00]: You look great in the scrubs, but by the end of this montage, you're just covered in blood everywhere. [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_00]: A lot on all over you. [SPEAKER_00]: So. [SPEAKER_00]: It definitely is telling that story of the impact of this battle.

[SPEAKER_00]: At the end of this montage, we end with the Bashir and the nurse, the Bolian, the medical staff, all sitting on the floor, exhausted, slumped up against the wall. [SPEAKER_00]: No more patience for the moment, and they're exhausted. [SPEAKER_00]: Party's over, says the nurse. [SPEAKER_00]: They decide to get something to eat.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's time to eat. [SPEAKER_00]: After all of this blood... [SPEAKER_07]: are they're going to go is it weird when Bashir says since you aren't busy can you take me to the nearest replicator so I can get something to eat we're going to cave how do they suddenly have a replicator or does that just run everything down okay okay because there was a moment where I'm like are the that threw me off a tiny bit like joking in terms of putting him on a stretcher is what he's trying to say he's so tired isn't that what I yeah that's what I kind of got from that [SPEAKER_07]: No, I'm in about going to the replicator to get food.

[SPEAKER_02]: Just having a replicator there as soon as you get it. [SPEAKER_02]: And if you're me off with what? [SPEAKER_02]: I understand, I understand. [SPEAKER_02]: But did anyone clock when they're sitting against the wall? [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was very forward of that nurse to lean her head on Beshear's shoulder.

[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I don't know if that's a little. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I was like, I was like, yeah, I was like, I don't know, you just met, would you really do that with another, he, like, I'm going to like, I'm going to like, I Unless they had a whole flirt thing that happened beforehand, which I don't think.

[SPEAKER_07]: I don't know, but wait a minute, they have just gone through such trauma and work so hard. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: And they're exhausted. [SPEAKER_07]: Maybe it's just that comfortableness that you have ensured experience. [SPEAKER_03]: Awesome. [SPEAKER_07]: because I might do that and not have it be flirty just like safe.

[SPEAKER_07]: I think she's not safe. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, thank you for that explanation, but it pulled me out first. [SPEAKER_02]: Let's I get a little. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: We cut back to the captain's office, where Susco's tossing a ball and Odo limps into his office.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god. [SPEAKER_07]: That's like that's so crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: After all of this, like, hars of war, poor Odo, was chasing two irridians who were cheating at Dabbo and jumped off the stairs to chase them, thinking he could turn into a turkaly and condor, but he forgot that he's a solid now.

[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a solid. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, he's a good reminder of the writers because it's been a few minutes in a while. [SPEAKER_00]: I hope he gets it back. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll see. [SPEAKER_07]: I do too, because I wanted to see that condor. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, as Odo talks about being a solid, this makes Cisco think about Jake and how fragile humans are, solids and humans and has a really, really nice monologue about being a parent.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is a moment to rock where I related to Cisco thinking about those moments with your [SPEAKER_00]: you just sit in the room while they're sleeping, just looking at them. [SPEAKER_00]: And those kinds of parent moments that I think everybody in the parent club can relate to, you know, when they're that vulnerable child, that sense of responsibility that you have.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it never goes away. [SPEAKER_00]: Whether you're eating 28 or 58, it doesn't matter. [SPEAKER_00]: They're always your kid. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Just a beautiful job of this. [SPEAKER_03]: It was so beautiful because it made me think [SPEAKER_03]: with my kid.

[SPEAKER_03]: That's when you know he's delivering the lines because you get put in that space that I was putting that space where I was thinking, yeah, you know, when your kid falls down and they look up at you, like you're the only one that can make it right, you know, and you pick a mob here and you're nursing the world or whatever it is and kissing the [SPEAKER_03]: You know.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, when you're the easy hero, you're the hero with this. [SPEAKER_03]: Well, you're and the only one. [SPEAKER_03]: There's nothing is no one else, right? [SPEAKER_03]: So, and you also feel vulnerable in those moments. [SPEAKER_03]: I remember my daughter, for example, was on the swing.

[SPEAKER_03]: Took her to the swing. [SPEAKER_03]: She's like seven or eight. [SPEAKER_03]: And she swinging his wings and she wanted to show me a crazy way that she can jump off of the wings. [SPEAKER_03]: We've all jumped off the wings. [SPEAKER_07]: We've all done this. [SPEAKER_07]: I'm able can evil.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So watch, I'm going to swing real high and I'm going to jump off and you know, and land. [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, okay, I'm sitting there and saying she says, I'm going to jump and she does the jump, [SPEAKER_03]: comes off wrong. [SPEAKER_07]: The wings didn't come out for.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it just came out wrong. [SPEAKER_03]: And she lands very weird and kind of I can see her arm get hyper extended when she landed, you know, I was so, you know, I can see the pain. [SPEAKER_03]: And you know, you're like, oh, why did you have like, why did you do that? [SPEAKER_03]: And then your half, like, I, you know, you'll be all right.

[UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And so it's like there's a vulnerable moment there where you're like, there's nothing I can do except for love you and be there for you in this moment. [SPEAKER_03]: I watched it and I can't do anything about it, you know? [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, you do learn early on. [SPEAKER_07]: There are a bunch of things that you can't control.

[SPEAKER_07]: What? [SPEAKER_07]: And it's really scary. [SPEAKER_07]: I think we try to fool ourselves through moments when things are going great, like everything's on track and then they jump off a swing. [SPEAKER_02]: It's a review or share that commonality of having children of your own and I envy that.

[SPEAKER_02]: But this last moment when Cisco doesn't even let Otto finish his lines, he knows he's dacks you with me will leave as soon as the fire is ready. [SPEAKER_02]: That reminded me of I saw that in action when we were filming Voyager. [SPEAKER_02]: And Robby got word that his kid was dealing with some major health thing and he just said he took off the microphone.

[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, I can't do this. [SPEAKER_02]: I have to go now and he just he became Cisco at that moment. [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember that Robby when you just took off the mic and you had to go? [SPEAKER_02]: It was just like, oh my god. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my little guy.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, that's had RSV and asthma. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was really critical state. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was just like I'm at. [SPEAKER_00]: I got [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go to his aid now, immediately, yeah, you guys work out how you're going to finish this scene with me on another day by and he laughed.

[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, wow, but anyway, that's what I saw in this interview reminded me of Robbie doing what he did. [SPEAKER_07]: And it's one of the reasons I quit my career was watching Avery not being able to be in New York with his kids and holding stuff. [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, not that he, he.

[SPEAKER_07]: You know, defaults or or confided in me, but also, but you can, you know when you're on a set things that are going on and it real time watching the not not be able to go to buster and I thought, oh, God, I can't do this. [SPEAKER_00]: I would lose my mind and so it was way better for me to listen to that and be an out home mom instead.

[SPEAKER_00]: If I curate them, ferrogates destroyed. [SPEAKER_00]: Agilum Prime is defenseless, and that's when Cisco says, Daxia would me, let's get in the defiant, let's go protect my son, so they're heading out to help. [SPEAKER_07]: Do you guys, do you guys get this weird sense of pride when you're watching the show, and when he says, Daxia was me, I'm like, yeah, of course he calls on me.

[UNKNOWN]: I'm just kidding. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: It's a little silly, but there's a little joy in watching you definitely connect it. [SPEAKER_00]: You feel like a real hero. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, then you'll connect it doing the scenes. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no.

[SPEAKER_04]: So he's no good. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, he's giving me that now. [SPEAKER_00]: He can't even turn into it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like a parrot. [SPEAKER_00]: He can't turn into it. [SPEAKER_00]: A condor or any bird. [SPEAKER_00]: He's not very helpful. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, next scene, we're back in the cavern in, I guess, the cafeteria area or something.

[SPEAKER_07]: The sheer cafeteria area. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, I love this scene. [SPEAKER_00]: Just a little bit of salt. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a little mess. [SPEAKER_00]: A little bit of salt. [SPEAKER_00]: I got some, some MIDI bass. [SPEAKER_00]: Trays of food, Bashir, jakesets down to eat with Bashir, Bashir, compliments him on how well he's handled himself.

[SPEAKER_00]: But she starts to eat and starts with an incision across the thigh bone. [SPEAKER_00]: He describes to Jay. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, Jay. [SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_04]: I'm eating. [SPEAKER_04]: This is not what I want to think about. [SPEAKER_02]: No. [SPEAKER_02]: But you haven't even taken a bite.

[SPEAKER_02]: And right before that, you say, I'm starved, which I believed 100%. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, he's very hungry. [SPEAKER_02]: And then you couldn't even take a bite after that comment. [SPEAKER_00]: And clearly, it doesn't bother Bashir, like all of these surgeries. [SPEAKER_00]: He can eat right away and, you know, he's fine with it.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, it's like seeing a corner with the sandwich on the dead body. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so I like the, I regretted the medium rare that I put order. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Just me. [SPEAKER_00]: I like the button of the scene when Bashir is rushing out to chase Jake.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the nurse goes, first day, and Kirby goes, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the bowling goes past the salt. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not big. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It doesn't bother them one bit. [SPEAKER_04]: I'll take what he's not eating. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Weak that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: uh... we catch up a little later they've got some fresh air they're walking and talking uh... beshearing jake or walking talking through tunnel i thought this was shop beautifully along with really nice with a stop in the middle um... jake wants to know what's going to happen to that ends in the shot himself to get out of fighting the clingons and beshears says probably a court martial and jakes says i don't get it they did all this training [SPEAKER_00]: but some of the people in the squad got scared and they ran before he shot himself, like they all freaked out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And basically the scene ends with them both kind of agreeing, you know, that simulations or training preparation doesn't always help in a real bad way. [SPEAKER_00]: And real different. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, in real life. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel that way with film sets, you know, sometimes I've seen actors come in that haven't been on set so much and they freak out.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like it doesn't matter how many acting classes you went to, yes, set is a different vibe, you know? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely. [SPEAKER_07]: Well, in film versus television, Suzanne Atoms, and I remember, [SPEAKER_07]: I was in an ECU and an extreme close-up and she started to walk into frame and I put started to walk towards me like we did in the and I put my hand and I hit her chest.

[SPEAKER_02]: You stopped her. [SPEAKER_07]: I stopped her from entering my shot. [SPEAKER_07]: I did and we kept going. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh wow. [SPEAKER_04]: They used that shot. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: He grew a directing. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: But it's just if you're not used to the rhythm or the rules of what's being shot.

[SPEAKER_07]: And she was an experienced actor, so it wasn't. [SPEAKER_07]: But not in television. [SPEAKER_07]: Not in television. [SPEAKER_07]: It sounds. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: We go back to the staff room next, Kirby's telling Bashir that Kalondra wants to talk to him about the aortal graph that he did.

[SPEAKER_00]: Kirby and Jake go to finish Jake's meal and I like Jake's line at the end. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I could handle some soup. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to get the medium rare chicken bone, whatever. [SPEAKER_07]: I really like the writing of this episode. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: The name did a good job. [SPEAKER_07]: Renekton. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Love him. [SPEAKER_03]: not not much, same as everybody else. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we had a joke one time. [SPEAKER_03]: I think it was that of one of the the rap parties at the end of the season and I think they said they brought the writers up and they said can anybody mean these guys?

[SPEAKER_04]: And none of us could. [SPEAKER_04]: With it. [SPEAKER_04]: I know, Ira, you're like, Ira, that's it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, pretty much. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my God. [SPEAKER_07]: They've gone down as a group. [SPEAKER_07]: But you didn't know that. [SPEAKER_02]: You didn't know that. [SPEAKER_02]: You didn't know that.

[SPEAKER_07]: But you didn't really talk to any of them. [SPEAKER_07]: So, you know, they come down and be good. [SPEAKER_07]: I couldn't pick Renee out of a lineup if you had. [SPEAKER_03]: They can you send this is, who would you today though, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Now I could. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's fine.

[SPEAKER_03]: You could not. [SPEAKER_03]: I remember what it was. [SPEAKER_07]: I remember cute, no. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, we go back to the main ward, Colondre's telling Bashir his surgery is holding up really well. [SPEAKER_00]: And she does ask about the news. [SPEAKER_00]: She seems worried.

[SPEAKER_00]: She's heard Starfleet pull out of the Arcana sector, and they're basically on their own now. [SPEAKER_00]: And Bashir says, well, the Rutledge and the Tacomsa are regrouping for a counterattack. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's when she says, oh, my husband is the science officer on the Tacomsa.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Bashir reassures her that the captain of that ship is one of the best in Starfleet. [SPEAKER_00]: And then a nurse calls Kalander for another surgery. [SPEAKER_00]: And you can feel the weight of that on her at the end, like my husband is also at risk, you know. [SPEAKER_00]: It's another part of, I think, an authentic experience of these people that are on the front lines of these kind of things, you know.

[SPEAKER_07]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_07]: Good writing. [SPEAKER_03]: very very good writing and then you also think about just being in a vulnerable position where you're like are we like just is there no better coming yeah we just sitting ducks are we just waiting to get slaughter because we don't have the personnel to defend ourselves in this scenario right and we're a bunch of doctors and nurses and wounded people and a writer and a writer so there's no [SPEAKER_00]: a man.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a very sensitive stomach. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And so there's this situation. [SPEAKER_03]: We talk about chance, you know, and it's like this is the chance. [SPEAKER_03]: This is the moment you're in where you feel like there are no options. [SPEAKER_03]: And the walls are closing in in that moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh. [SPEAKER_00]: Back to the staff room, our mess hall, Kirby and Jacob are eating, Kirby fills Jake in on the war. [SPEAKER_00]: Kirby's throwing out all this, all this information, like, [SPEAKER_00]: And the worst of it is the Klingons consider medical staff fair game. [SPEAKER_00]: So they're not safe just because they're here in this hospital.

[SPEAKER_07]: And no one's being sensitive to the fact that he's an 18 year old. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then you hear the Klingons are they either you get a disruptor or you get a, you know, the batlet, choose your, choose your death essentially. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I just want to draw attention to Kirby to Andrew Kovovatt, the guest star in this scene.

[SPEAKER_02]: He had a ton of stuff to say, and I clearly see that he did his research. [SPEAKER_02]: He understood what Trek was. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, he wasn't a guest star just rattling off lines. [SPEAKER_02]: I think he did a fabulous job holding his own in a scene here with a series regular, right?

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, amazing supporting cast. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Good job. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Kirby asks him how he ended up here. [SPEAKER_00]: And he thinks it's very cool. [SPEAKER_00]: He's a writer. [SPEAKER_00]: He says a journalist. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think Jake says no, not exactly a journalist.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's downplaying it. [SPEAKER_07]: He talks about that he's written fiction. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Mostly fiction. [SPEAKER_00]: And then we have another voiceover where Jake's like, another Fred Savage moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Another Fred Savage moment. [SPEAKER_02]: Another one of the years moment.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's like, you know, all I can think about is like the clings on's killing me and how close they are and nobody seems to be worried like how is this guy just talking and like it's a regular day. [SPEAKER_07]: So, but he says for the first time in his life, his father's not here to protect him and that really.

[SPEAKER_07]: sunken for me. [SPEAKER_07]: I would imagine for you too, Robbie. [SPEAKER_07]: I mean me leaving home at 17 from Iowa to New York. [SPEAKER_07]: There were plenty of situations where I felt that way. [SPEAKER_07]: Like, I just want my mommy, I just want my daddy. [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, it's a weird thing to be that teenage, that to be a teenager and to be thrust in a situation that's too big for you to handle.

[SPEAKER_07]: It's scary. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I like this dissolve because it pand everyone is sleeping. [SPEAKER_00]: He's very exhausted in these bunks. [SPEAKER_00]: And then you get over to Jake and he can't sleep. [SPEAKER_00]: He's wide awake, writing in his [SPEAKER_00]: journal or whatever.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it's also exhaustion. [SPEAKER_00]: I would think for Jake. [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody else seems to be able to eat, sleep, do the normal things a little bit. [SPEAKER_00]: They're kind of used to this. [SPEAKER_03]: There's was a big case of be careful what you wish for for Jake.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, Jake was like, yeah, let's go. [SPEAKER_03]: Let's do this. [SPEAKER_03]: I, you know, you're wishing for it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Be careful what you wish for. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, but like you said, he has, if he's not sleeping, then he's running on fumes and that really makes his decision later of running.

[SPEAKER_02]: It makes sense. [SPEAKER_02]: He's completely, you know, he's exhausted. [SPEAKER_02]: He's overwhelmed with all these different things coming at him. [SPEAKER_02]: So he doesn't even know what's up or down. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't. [SPEAKER_00]: Then there's a big explosion that wakes everybody else up, Jake jumps up, and the nurse says what was that?

[SPEAKER_00]: The Bolian says it's the clingsons, they must have taken out the reactor, because we see lights flickering, we go into the main war, the main hospital area, powers failing, and they may lose half the patients if the power fails here. [SPEAKER_00]: So Bashir offers, he says, you know, the runabout has a portable generator, and Kirby says [SPEAKER_00]: gets them outside the perimeter and maybe they can get this generator and we'll keep things going.

[SPEAKER_00]: This was a moment where I felt with Karen Austin's performance. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, is she a spy? [SPEAKER_00]: There was something about her performance. [SPEAKER_07]: I was so glad you said that I thought that the other where she was asking about, she was asking details and I was thinking, don't tell her, don't tell her, even though she is.

[SPEAKER_02]: I did not pick up on that at all. [SPEAKER_00]: That's Harry, you and I are on the same page. [SPEAKER_07]: I was like, it's my brother, my tweet. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's always by. [SPEAKER_07]: I think it's from watching so much television that you are. [SPEAKER_00]: You're looking for the plot twists.

[SPEAKER_07]: You're looking at it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's interesting. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, what was it about that scene? [SPEAKER_03]: Was it was with that gave you that. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like what? [SPEAKER_07]: She was asking for information. [SPEAKER_00]: She was asking for information. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, who's defending us?

[SPEAKER_00]: What's the ships are coming? [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, because she was asking about her husband, but it was set up in a way. [SPEAKER_07]: It was like, wait a minute. [SPEAKER_07]: That's too important for her to be asking and he and he, meaning Bashir doesn't have the authority to say anything that's like, top to strategy or yeah.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's exactly agree. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I totally. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like not. [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, this woman is dedicated to saving people's lives to doctor. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't trust her. [SPEAKER_02]: He didn't either.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's the auto in you. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: But Robbie, who did you think she was a spy for though? [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_07]: I didn't know either. [SPEAKER_04]: No, I just don't trust her. [SPEAKER_04]: I just don't trust her. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_04]: All right. [SPEAKER_07]: It's not like our show has. [SPEAKER_07]: or shows haven't had those kind of plot to it. [SPEAKER_04]: Of course we've had that. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, you're right. [SPEAKER_03]: Are you just like from what? [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't get it from. [SPEAKER_03]: I just thought he was really trying to say good.

[SPEAKER_03]: Dedicated to her. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't like her. [SPEAKER_00]: I like Karen Austin. [SPEAKER_00]: No, it's nice person. [SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't Karen. [SPEAKER_00]: It was the right thing. [SPEAKER_07]: She was asking at the time. [SPEAKER_07]: It wasn't like she was forthcoming and saying, I'm concerned about my husband.

[SPEAKER_07]: Do you know anything about his ship, the blah, blah, blah shit? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, great. [SPEAKER_07]: It just sounded. [SPEAKER_00]: Suspicious. [SPEAKER_07]: She was gathering information. [SPEAKER_03]: Like, yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Okay. [SPEAKER_03]: All right. [SPEAKER_03]: I thought to come so was a suspicious name for a ship.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: I was like who names the ship to come. [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_07]: Who named the store? [SPEAKER_03]: Come and go. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_07]: Who named the store? [SPEAKER_07]: Come and go. [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: But my whole point is, if you're going to go get that backup generator, you don't need to take Cisco's son with you to do it.

[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I'm saying? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, obviously, the, the, take the bullion. [SPEAKER_02]: Take the bullion. [SPEAKER_02]: He's, he, yeah, the war doesn't bother him. [SPEAKER_02]: It just bothered me. [SPEAKER_02]: But then again, we wouldn't have this episode if he didn't go.

[SPEAKER_02]: I get it. [SPEAKER_02]: But I thought it was very irresponsible. [SPEAKER_02]: Up is sure. [SPEAKER_07]: of course in maturity. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Which we talking about. [SPEAKER_07]: Back to the back we are story. [SPEAKER_07]: Back to our story. [SPEAKER_00]: We go outside to the plant surface.

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember where you filmed this? [SPEAKER_03]: Uh yeah, Griffith Park part of it. [SPEAKER_03]: Was it Griffith? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh. [SPEAKER_00]: It was good. [SPEAKER_00]: It looks like it's in case. [SPEAKER_00]: Too much green.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It kind of looked like that. [SPEAKER_00]: Well you you run out of this tunnel. [SPEAKER_07]: Okay can we just say [SPEAKER_07]: And you were taller than him, like I was, I was just so like, um, the running, yes, it was so adorable to me because you both looked like, you know, um, [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.

[SPEAKER_07]: We'll say something. [SPEAKER_07]: I was in the same baby. [SPEAKER_04]: You're out. [SPEAKER_07]: Your neck isn't really long. [SPEAKER_07]: I heard a baby moves or baby elk. [SPEAKER_07]: Baby elk. [SPEAKER_07]: Gright their legs are so long compared to their bodies. [SPEAKER_00]: That was one day, though.

[SPEAKER_00]: In this running chase, I wondered if Kim Freightman had said, you have to be bigger with your hands and you have to be bigger because it was a cool action sequence she should. [SPEAKER_00]: But it did feel like both of you were giving it a little extra flailing. [SPEAKER_00]: I bet Kim Freightman said, I need me.

[SPEAKER_07]: For the, oh, for the, to sell the explosion worse, yeah, but it really worked for your character to me, because it was, it was really impactful, how disorienting and scary it was. [SPEAKER_07]: I really worked for me what you did. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know where the shots are coming from like you don't know where they're coming.

[SPEAKER_07]: Oh my gosh that would be terrifying. [SPEAKER_02]: I will say when you were flailing in the beginning that Robbie's probably right you were probably directed to sell that explosion more that you're it's awkward. [SPEAKER_02]: But after that when you start running in the opposite direction this is the first time I've ever seen you run.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I know that you're an athlete, that you're athletic, but I have not, but that second scene when you're running, you are nimble, you're fast, you're like a gazelle. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he was like, look at him, he's just, he's, he's making up some ground. [SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, we've never seen the character of Jigsisco run anywhere on the station.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, not to this extent, so it was kind of a treat for me to see your athleticism on display. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, thank you. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: That's it. [SPEAKER_03]: to break out the legs. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's a lot of a lot of action running around and the one of the explosions knocks Bashir out and Jake's got a tough decision does he help him or does he retreat and he does retreat.

[SPEAKER_00]: he runs back the way he came as the explosions continue. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it's very scary. [SPEAKER_00]: He keeps running. [SPEAKER_00]: He falls down a hill lands on top of the corpse of a cling on. [SPEAKER_00]: At one point, there's starfleet dead all around him. [SPEAKER_00]: He's stumbled into this battlefield.

[SPEAKER_00]: So he starts running again over a ridge, tumbling down the other side, and maybe. [SPEAKER_00]: Poor guy. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you do that stunt yourself, Sarak, do you remember? [SPEAKER_00]: It looked like it was you doing the roll down the hill. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I did that roll. [SPEAKER_03]: Probably wouldn't do it now at this age.

[SPEAKER_03]: You can ask me to do it, but 18-year-old me was like, yeah, I'll roll down the hill, sure. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, well, I could do anything. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that seemed like that was pretty tough. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, it did look not work right there. [SPEAKER_04]: I should, I should have got some pain, but I don't have to check my record.

[SPEAKER_00]: You should have, well you rolled down the hill, you land on top of a wounded human who punches you or first you get punched. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, that was like weird. [SPEAKER_07]: Wasn't it? [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, he rolled down the hill onto a wounded dead cling-on first. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and then later.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then he will, again, he falls to on on on on on to Burke. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_07]: The human on to Burke's fist. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_07]: That was just such an odd shot though for you to just get hit. [SPEAKER_07]: And then it was on the ground. [SPEAKER_07]: It just seemed like [SPEAKER_07]: That seemed a little off to me.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, especially that he was on the ground when we find him. [SPEAKER_07]: How did he reach up and hit him? [SPEAKER_07]: Anyway, I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_07]: That was technical me having a little nitpick moment. [SPEAKER_02]: No, that's a great nitpick moment. [SPEAKER_02]: The physics of it doesn't work and what it shows you, right?

[SPEAKER_07]: Well, especially he's bleeding out. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, what? [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: But mind nitpick moment. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if this pulled any of you out. [SPEAKER_02]: But this entire time that we see these explosions, I'm thinking, [SPEAKER_02]: When did the klingons use mortars like what I why are they did feel like they were too Yeah, this is very very old school tech are not tech old school weapons, right?

[SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I should have been like a disruptor as disruptor being coming down a hit on the ground But it's breaking the rocks break them. [SPEAKER_07]: Hi, we saw dust. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was weird So that thing on your names. [SPEAKER_02]: They were like grenades. [SPEAKER_02]: They all have been okay [SPEAKER_00]: Well, after you get punched, we reveal Burke, a wounded human there, and he asked Jake for a hypospray.

[SPEAKER_00]: He asked Jake why he's out of the settlement, and Jake lies to him here. [SPEAKER_00]: He started to cover up for his shame of leaving Bashir, and he says he just got caught. [SPEAKER_00]: He was outside looking for cover. [SPEAKER_00]: and just got caught outside of the settlement, and Burke then describes his platoons battle, and it's very heroic, how they had to escape on a hopper, and he purposely stayed behind, so that they could escape and get to safety, but he got hit in his heroic deed, he got injured, and it's bad.

[SPEAKER_00]: and he needs another hypo and Jake says, I'll go find something for y'all, save you. [SPEAKER_00]: So Jake's gonna try to be a hero here at the end. [SPEAKER_02]: Also a quick little bit of trivia. [SPEAKER_02]: When Burke's telling you a story, he says, CO, combining officer ordered me and Bryce to lay down cover.

[SPEAKER_02]: So the squad could get up the ramp. [SPEAKER_02]: Bryce is the name of the person that stole the story is Bryce. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's his first name, so that's cool. [SPEAKER_02]: So they all included that in there, which is very interesting. [SPEAKER_02]: originally Renee Escher-Varia when he wrote the teleplay for this, he had Jake fall into the foxhole with a cling-on warrior, not with a human.

[SPEAKER_02]: This cling-on was blinded by battle, so he couldn't see anything and they kind of in the time that they're in that foxhole together, they end up having a little bit of bonding moment until Jake [SPEAKER_02]: Um, tells the Klingon why he, you know, why he's there that he ran away from the battle and away from Bashir and that's when the Klingon is so disgusted he throws Jake out of the fox hole because he doesn't want to die next to a coward is how they wrote it.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and Renee loved what he wrote. [SPEAKER_02]: I wrote looked at it and said, nope. [SPEAKER_02]: And they kind of, [SPEAKER_02]: But it has there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And then so, so Iris said, no, you're taking that out. [SPEAKER_02]: Now you're switching it. [SPEAKER_02]: You're pivoting.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be a starfleet person. [SPEAKER_02]: And so after everything was all said and done, it was filmed. [SPEAKER_02]: They finally, the final edit, everything. [SPEAKER_02]: It was Renee who agreed at the very end after seeing the final product. [SPEAKER_02]: I wrote, I wrote was right.

[SPEAKER_02]: It needed to be changed to someone who was starfleet as opposed to the cling on. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I like the other way, too, though. [SPEAKER_00]: I would have been interesting to see sure. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think so too. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, Jake starts with Burke kind of covering his butt a little and isn't quite telling the truth, but then Burke says, um, [SPEAKER_00]: Well, Jake says, maybe I ran for a reason, so I could find you and save your life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when Burke goes, wait a minute, you ran and then Jake reveals the truth that he couldn't see the sheer or the explosions we're getting closer, so he ran. [SPEAKER_00]: That's when he met Burke, or stumbled on Burke, and Burke has discussed it. [SPEAKER_00]: Burke is like, you left the doctor.

[SPEAKER_00]: You think going back and saving me is going to make that right? [SPEAKER_00]: No, life doesn't work that way, kid. [SPEAKER_00]: And then he dies. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot to ask an actor to play a big scene like this and not die at the end. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's hard to do. [SPEAKER_07]: And one scene.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all of a sudden. [SPEAKER_03]: He was great in that scene. [SPEAKER_03]: He was really rough around the edges kind of reminded me like a Nick Nolty type of, but yeah, I just thought he gave a great performance. [SPEAKER_03]: And I thought also what was great about that scene was Jake and his initial reaction was to lie and cover it up, which is a flashback to the foreshadowing.

[SPEAKER_03]: when they asked him about, you know, the guy who shot himself with the fear of that engine, the engine, he says initial thing was to let's see if I can lie my way out of this right and I feel like that was a good call back in that moment like Jake tried that and by the way, both times it doesn't fly right, right, right, right, right, right, right, and nobody believe Jake.

[SPEAKER_03]: So I think that was a good call back in that moment just. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: I thought also is age appropriate because that's your first instinct as a kid. [SPEAKER_07]: It's still showing that you're the part of you that's scared of getting in trouble. [SPEAKER_07]: You're meant, you know, your whole life has been being a kid.

[SPEAKER_07]: So that's what kids do. [SPEAKER_07]: They don't know always that it's safe to tell the truth. [SPEAKER_00]: We go to the engine room next DAX calls to go out of this tiny Jeffrey's tomb opening and what are you doing in there and He says he's tweaking the pattern buffers and the replicators just trying to stay busy keep his mind off Jake and [SPEAKER_00]: They sit down and this is a beautiful story about NEMA, Dax tells.

[SPEAKER_00]: She shares that in a previous host, NEMA, her daughter, came down with regal and fever, and for weeks, Audred never left her side. [SPEAKER_00]: She read all 17 volumes of castors down the river light, and realized that she was reading as much for NEMA, as she was reading for herself to come for herself.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a great performance there, Terry. [SPEAKER_00]: And great story. [SPEAKER_07]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_07]: I was very close to a very close to my nieces, especially at that time they were little. [SPEAKER_07]: So it was easy to draw on how much I love them.

[SPEAKER_07]: You know, I was super close with them because I thought I would never get the chance to have a baby. [SPEAKER_05]: No. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, if think back, it's 30 years ago. [SPEAKER_07]: So sort of, and I'm already probably 30, 20, 30, 31 doing this. [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[SPEAKER_02]: So that was the time. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: And back then, it was a lot of people, but say, you know, oh, it's too late now. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: At 31. [SPEAKER_07]: Two more now. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: It's interesting.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the beautiful seed. [SPEAKER_00]: But thank you. [SPEAKER_00]: It was beautiful. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So let's go ask. [SPEAKER_00]: How did it turn out with NEMA? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Better be a happy moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And Dax says, yes, she was fine.

[SPEAKER_00]: She pulled through, but then a few years later, she stopped talking to me for a while. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's complicated. [SPEAKER_00]: And then they both decide to do busy work at the end. [SPEAKER_00]: Dax decides to double check the replicator buff buffers, asks for his decoupler, and says, go say, get your own decoupler.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go do some work. [SPEAKER_00]: So they both need a little distraction here, with some busy work. [SPEAKER_03]: We're both worried about, yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And it's funny that the tool is called a decoupler because he is trying to decouple himself from the idea. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Again. [SPEAKER_07]: Brilliant writing. [SPEAKER_00]: Good job, all. [SPEAKER_00]: Good catch there. [SPEAKER_00]: Back in the main ward, the powers on, Jake returns, Kirby is happily surprised to see him, says the runabout and everything was destroyed, and Jake says he must have been knocked out.

[SPEAKER_00]: So he lies here a bit. [SPEAKER_00]: I must have been knocked out, and just got lost. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know where where I was, and he reluctantly goes over to face [SPEAKER_00]: to see if he's alive because he's about to get killed by this guy. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

[SPEAKER_00]: and then Jake has another voiceover moment here about how guilty he feels, how he's a coward and he wishes that Bashir had seen him run away and told everyone the truth so he didn't have to because he says they deserve to know who I really am. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of guilt and a lot of shame and a lot of struggle with Jake here and I thought he did a great job.

[SPEAKER_00]: Really good, Serac. [SPEAKER_03]: And the voiceover work internalized the thought process that we all kind of go through in these moments where we still shame or we feel like we have made it, you know, told the lie that we don't really feel comfortable with, you know, whatever it is, that those kinds of things go for your head like, ah, I don't know if I did the right thing at which people knew the truth, so I didn't have to say it myself.

[SPEAKER_03]: I thought that was very well done as far as writing again, just really going through the process and what we go through when we're facing these kinds of situations. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, very elegantly written. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a nurse asked Jake to take a tray of food over to a patient and Jake goes to give him food.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the ensin, Jeff Brown, from before. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake just wants to hand him the food and leave. [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't want to face this guy who reminds [SPEAKER_00]: And the instance says, maybe he'll end up starts chattering about, you know what, maybe I'm gonna end up on a mining team after the court martial.

[SPEAKER_00]: He admits that sometimes things happen that change everything about who you thought you were, that you don't expect, you know, things surprise you, how life ends up back to that Bible verse, you were at it's like time and chance and suddenly everything that you thought about yourself and about life is different.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's, he's realizing this, the sense. [SPEAKER_00]: And he's kind of speaking for Jake in a lot of ways in this scene, I thought. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was really good. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he says something too that I caught on this watch that made me feel really sensitive to his feeling, to what he was going through.

[SPEAKER_03]: And that's when he said I wish to him, but a little bit higher. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And that was like, that was very revealing for me because it's like, oh, [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't, he can't even live with this. [SPEAKER_05]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_03]: And it's already, it's only a couple days, but he's like, I don't like this life that I have to live now and face this truth, this reality that I did this.

[SPEAKER_03]: So I think that was also kind of a wake-up call for Jake Lake. [SPEAKER_03]: You have to own the truth of whatever the truth is. [SPEAKER_03]: So that you can go forward. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, just a quick bit of trivia about this scene after Principal Photography wrapped can freeben realize that she was running three minutes short for the episode.

[SPEAKER_02]: So Renee Ishavria had to create a new scene and it was this scene right here. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And this new second scene with Jake and the soldier of the incident. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so ironic because after the scene was written in shot, both Eshavaria and Kim Friedman came to feel that this was one of the most thematically important scenes in the entire episode.

[SPEAKER_02]: A grade. [SPEAKER_02]: And it all happened because it was short. [SPEAKER_02]: What a blessing. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, a blessing indeed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think sometimes for writers like actors when you don't have so much time to overthink something and you just have to dive in and write a scene where it's an actor, you don't have time to overthink it, you know, you just got to dive in and be in the moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: It suddenly did some of your best work. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Oh yeah, overthinking is done. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Next we go to the staff room. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake is resting on a bunk. [SPEAKER_00]: The nurse, Kirby and the bollian are making jokes about how they'd prefer to die.

[SPEAKER_00]: very gallows humor kind of, you know, ways that they might die, um, they ask Jake how he'd prefer and he gets really triggered here. [SPEAKER_00]: He gets really mad. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Says this is not a joke. [SPEAKER_00]: People are dying. [SPEAKER_00]: And I love the line where he says nobody's going to remember who was a hero or who was a coward.

[SPEAKER_00]: This whole thing is just a waste. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's just so true. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yells and Bashir sort of calms him down and says, hey, let's take a walk. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you need to calm down. [SPEAKER_00]: Back in a tunnel, Bashir asked what's bothering him and Jake says, he just didn't think there were funny and Bashir says, no, something else is bugging you and Jake yells at him, just leave me alone and Bashir agrees.

[SPEAKER_00]: But he says, you know, I'm always here if you ever want to talk about it. [SPEAKER_00]: and this is where Soraki fell to the ground and began to cry finally in this episode and let's it all out and there was a beautiful, beautiful moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Really great. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember this, did it say in the script he cries here because sometimes that can be intimidating for actors like, oh shit, I got to cry.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't think it said that he implies, I think it was more just like, you know, slumped out and feels sad, you know, sad about it, but yeah, that was a big moment there as well, one, you see, per year, really trying to do the right thing and lift up, cheer me up and be there as a friend.

[SPEAKER_03]: So that's a good thing. [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, Jake's going through a lot of stuff because [SPEAKER_03]: word why it's like nobody's going to remember this it's not even like this is not some kind of pivotal stand up for rights you know where we're speaking on behalf and oppressed people or we're fighting for freedoms like we're just this isn't this is an unnecessary skirmish here.

[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, to be frivolously casual and joking about how you're going to die in this situation, Jake doesn't want to hear that. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: No. [SPEAKER_07]: And he's too young to jump in with Galloway's humor. [SPEAKER_07]: He's to, it's just not, where his head can be at.

[SPEAKER_07]: It's just not there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Appropriately. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, beautiful moment there by yourself in the cave. [SPEAKER_00]: little time past as we see Jake as sleep and suddenly bang more bombs or you know the battle started again the shelling starts rocks are falling and Jake runs and in in the staff room the bombing is really bad there's dust falling all around which that was always a a big production in the caves when they had things falling and yeah those long sticks where they'd hold you know knocked down dust and [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but it looked good.

[SPEAKER_00]: It looked really good. [SPEAKER_00]: It really did. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Colander tells the team that they have to move all the patients to an evacuation point outside of the tunnel. [SPEAKER_00]: And Kirby says we've got over 70 patients and all this equipment is going to take too long.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Bashir as a leader jumps in, he says, Everybody's got to stay calm and just do your job. [SPEAKER_00]: Get to work. [SPEAKER_00]: between Bashir and Kalandra. [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody does their job. [SPEAKER_00]: Except for Jake, who's just frozen in fear here. [SPEAKER_00]: The bonds are continuing.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is literally jumping at every detonation, just spinning in circles. [SPEAKER_00]: Bashir looks for Jake as they evacuate. [SPEAKER_00]: You see Bashir take one last look. [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't see Jake, but he's got to keep doing his job and we reveal Jake hiding under a table. [SPEAKER_00]: When [SPEAKER_00]: runs into security's phaser rifle.

[SPEAKER_00]: He runs into the main ward. [SPEAKER_00]: Clingons are attacking. [SPEAKER_00]: Jake and Jake is a terrible hider. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, little coffee. [SPEAKER_04]: Pain people I've ever seen in my life. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, hey, that's not going to save me. [SPEAKER_04]: That little table will be saved me from Earth.

[SPEAKER_04]: Let alone us attacking Klingon. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god, like you got to do better, Jake. [SPEAKER_04]: You got to find better spots to go. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And thank God he hid where he did because the Starfleet security gets taken out by the Klingons and the Klingons are walking right towards that table when Jake grabs a phaser rifle from one of the down Starfleeters.

[SPEAKER_00]: He starts firing. [SPEAKER_07]: Wow, we're just about to slide you were firing because there was a tiny hesitation. [SPEAKER_07]: It was like [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I was yelling at you. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're all sort of falling. [SPEAKER_00]: He's hitting the ceiling. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not part of his plan.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's just terrified and tried to do anything. [SPEAKER_00]: And the ceiling starts to fall down in the midst of that collapse. [SPEAKER_00]: We kind of go to black. [SPEAKER_00]: We come back and Bashar and Cisco. [SPEAKER_00]: are waking Jacob. [SPEAKER_00]: The clingsons have retreated, we learn, and the ceasefire is reinstated.

[SPEAKER_00]: They say, Jake, you're a hero. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're it's all because you blocked, you know, the entrance, you sealed the entrance and it was genius. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jake's voice over starts [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was great. [SPEAKER_00]: He said, he said, all he could do was think about staying alive in this voice over.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then we have a little montage of Bashir reading the article. [SPEAKER_00]: And Cisco reading the article and Cisco finishes reading the story. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jake says, as the place, he'll always remember this agile on-prem battle as the place where he learned the line between courage and cowardice.

[SPEAKER_00]: is a lot thinner than most people believe. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the end of his story there in Sko as so proud of him. [SPEAKER_00]: Give him a hug, says it took a lot of courage to tell the truth, son, and look inside yourself, and I'm proud of you. [SPEAKER_00]: Great ending, great ending.

[SPEAKER_07]: Thank you Renee, it chivorea, for writing this episode. [SPEAKER_07]: It's just so gorgeous and thank you, Sir Rock, for your amazing performance. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_07]: Not at a moment. [SPEAKER_00]: How did you feel watching it? [SPEAKER_00]: I know you've seen it before, but just watching it this time, like what?

[SPEAKER_03]: I felt like I was speaking to people on behalf of people that go into similar situations [SPEAKER_03]: In over their head in a moment where they didn't necessarily sign up with that and like whoa, this is not what I expected So I felt like it speaks for that and it speaks to also, you know Start track in it's core is a really a military show [SPEAKER_03]: and so people who serve really watch the show and identify with the characters because it's similar to their service in the military.

[SPEAKER_03]: And I've met a lot of those people at the convention and I'm grateful for their service, but I'm also grateful to that we had the opportunity to entertain them on our show and provide some level of escape from the core cold, hard realities of [SPEAKER_03]: A lot of people that have come up to me who are veterans, you know, talk about the realities of the show being similar to their own experiences.

[SPEAKER_03]: Cisco was like my commanding officer or, you know, or that episode kind of reminded me of something that I went through. [SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, I got a chance to tell that story on behalf of the people who served our country and some of them who have done heroic things, which I was on the dead side of, in this episode, and also some of the cowardly things.

[SPEAKER_03]: And how thin that line is, and I think one of the things that was great was that Jake was really trying to plead on behalf of the Ensign's case to not be severely punished. [SPEAKER_03]: I think when he asked Bashir like what's going to happen to him like, you know, he's really concerned like he's going to have to like have more punishment than the punishment that he's already right with.

[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, that certainly seems like enough punishment. [SPEAKER_03]: Right. [SPEAKER_07]: That's the mental torture. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's already a punishment, you know, and he's going to have to face jail time for that or I thought some kind of, you know, dishonorable discharge or whatever the process is going to be, and I'm sure there's people who have been served that have gone through that process for whatever act of, you know, cowardice that they may have displayed and I think it's important to understand that it's okay, and to tell those people that, you know, it's okay.

[SPEAKER_03]: you did something that's a human reaction and sometimes it happens and sometimes we're overcome by fear and it's okay and sometimes fear can cause us to do a brave thing as well just step up in that moment and so it's about opportunity and I wanted to talk about the book [SPEAKER_03]: This reminded me of a book that I read when I was in school called The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.

[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And red badge of Courage, it's about the Civil War who came out in the late 1800s, but it is about this both sizes and of the story in which our main young soldier in this, you know, experiences and act of cowardice and also an act of hero arts. [SPEAKER_03]: and it talks about that.

[SPEAKER_03]: And I felt like this was, you know, this episode was an homage to red badge of courage. [SPEAKER_03]: I know homage to the scripture in Ecclesiastes 90, you know, chapter 9 and 11. [SPEAKER_03]: And I felt like it was a combination of all of those things. [SPEAKER_03]: And so that's what makes it beautiful.

[SPEAKER_03]: It's a beautiful story because it tells the truth about the difficult truth. [SPEAKER_03]: and I think the the hardest thing to do is to be truthful and I think that's what really makes Jake a hero in this episode not that he stopped the clingons or whatever but that he faced the truth and put it down in that last journal or that last piece that he wrote [SPEAKER_03]: because he told the truth about his experience and didn't edit it to make himself look any better or worse.

[SPEAKER_03]: I think that is the hero in all of us is when we're able to be truthful and honest with ourselves. [SPEAKER_03]: 100% can say this is my experience, this is what I live through, this is my fault, my faults, [SPEAKER_03]: my tragedy and my triumph. [SPEAKER_03]: And if we can look people lies and be honest about those things and lay those things bare, then that makes you a hero because you're all out to all of that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Beautifully said beautifully. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: There's nothing new here. [SPEAKER_03]: These stories are timeless. [SPEAKER_03]: That's why Shakespeare lives on. [SPEAKER_03]: It's nothing new. [SPEAKER_03]: We're human. [SPEAKER_03]: Time of stories. [SPEAKER_07]: We're human.

[SPEAKER_07]: There's a certain amount of ways our life plays out. [SPEAKER_07]: It was generations. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_07]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: Robbie, why don't you start off and what do you have? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, for me, I think Jake's last line when he talks about the line between courage and cowardice is a lot thinner than most people believe.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's the lesson to me. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: That whether it's war, a battle, whether it's the L.A. fires and helping people respond to that, whether it's about being a journalist and telling the truth or spending it the way you want the line between being a hero. [SPEAKER_00]: and not being a hero is very thin, and we can find ourselves on either side of that line at any time.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's the lesson to me. [SPEAKER_07]: Okay, Terry. [SPEAKER_07]: Beautifully said, I wrote, face your choices with truth, love, and kindness to yourself and you will grow. [SPEAKER_02]: Hmm, like that. [SPEAKER_07]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_07]: I actually like better how Robby put it I use the script.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the line they wrote in there That's what hit me. [SPEAKER_00]: It's beautiful. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so rock you want to chime in on that one I think this is really a maturation and about maturation. [SPEAKER_03]: I think this is about growing up I think You know this is the kind of moment where it's the before and after [SPEAKER_03]: Before this moment, Jake thought one way about the world and, you know, life, the optimism and, you know, the zest for running up in, you know, let's see what it is.

[SPEAKER_03]: and then this is the maturation. [SPEAKER_03]: This is, you see what it is. [SPEAKER_03]: And now you come out differently. [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, it's a right of passage story. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you come out differently. [SPEAKER_03]: You went into this with one way, with one perspective.

[SPEAKER_03]: Like, yeah, let's go fight. [SPEAKER_03]: Let's go see the fight. [SPEAKER_03]: Let's go do it. [SPEAKER_03]: And then you're like, oh, [SPEAKER_03]: This is what it is, and it's serious, and it's heavy, and it grows your perspective as from a childhood to kind of beyond adults where you're like, oh, this is what adult.

[SPEAKER_03]: circumstances look like. [SPEAKER_03]: So for me, this is really about maturation and Jake maturity learning. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love that. [SPEAKER_02]: I have the same lesson as Robby's the same quote, but I also added be careful of what you wish for because sometimes you can end up biting off more than you can chew.
