Croatia's Darkest Hour: The Ustasa Regime and Jasenovac

In April 1941, after the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia, the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was proclaimed, a puppet state led by Ante Pavelić and his Ustaša movement. This episode delves into the ideology, racial laws, and systematic persecution that followed, targeting Serbs, Jews, and Roma. We explore the notorious Jasenovac concentration camp, the role of the Catholic Church, and the legacy of one of Europe's most brutal collaborationist regimes. Drawing on survivor accounts and historical records, we examine how the NDH implemented a genocidal policy that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and how its memory still shapes Croatia and the Balkans today.
