The Uskoci: Pirates, Mercenaries, and the Habsburg Frontier

Episode 225 dives into the shadowy world of the Uskoci, the Christian mercenaries who operated from Senj and Klis against the Ottoman Empire. We explore how these men, often labeled as pirates by Venice and Genoa, were actually state-sanctioned fighters bound by the Statuta Valachorum. Lucas traces their origins from the fall of Bosnia to their role in the Long Turkish War, while Luna asks about their complex relationship with the Republic of Ragusa. Together, they examine the Battle of Sisak, the diplomatic scandals that nearly destroyed them, and the unique legal status that allowed them to raid enemy territories while claiming protection under Habsburg law. This episode clarifies the difference between criminal piracy and frontier warfare, revealing how the Uskoci shaped the military and political landscape of the Adriatic coast for two centuries.
