The Zrinski-Frankopan Conspiracy: Croatia's Doomed Plot

In 1671, two of Croatia's most powerful noble families—the Zrinskis and the Frankopans—were executed for plotting against the Habsburg emperor. This episode unpacks the so-called Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy, a desperate bid to throw off Habsburg rule after the disastrous Treaty of Vasvár, which ended the Austro-Turkish War in 1664. We explore the roles of Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan, their secret negotiations with France and the Ottomans, the betrayal that doomed them, and the legacy that made them martyrs for Croatian statehood. Along the way, we touch on the decline of the Croatian nobility, the rise of absolutism under Leopold I, and the symbolism of their severed heads displayed in Vienna. How did a family that once defended Christendom end up executed as traitors? And why does their story still resonate in Croatia today? Join us for a tale of ambition, intrigue, and a nation's enduring memory.
