The Impersonal Life is one of the most important books I have ever read. I read the entire thing on the channel a while back and the responses I got were like nothing else. Small print run. Anonymous author. Published in 1914 by an Akron banker sitting on the board of Firestone Tire and Rubber. Signed with a single word — anonymous. His name was Joseph Seber Benner and by design nobody was supposed to know it. His own daughter did not learn the truth about him until she went through his letters after he died in 1938.
⠀
Every teacher I love in this space is downstream of what he received in that room. Neville Goddard's I AM. Joseph Murphy's subconscious. The entire I Am movement. Father Divine took the language from him directly. Elvis Presley annotated his copy to pieces and handed copies to strangers for the rest of his life. And Benner wrote the book in the most extraordinary way anyone has ever attempted — in the first person, as God, speaking directly to the reader. In this deep dive I walk you through everything. The moment the voice arrived in his office at forty years old. The one strange clue from his early life that hinted at what was underneath the banker. The central practice he built the entire book around. The chapter where God tells you to throw the book away. And the mind-bending overlap between his teaching on the I Am and my own work on the future self. This is the man behind almost every teacher you already follow.
