The Fall of Jaffna: Portugal's Conquest of Sri Lanka's Tamil Kingdom

Lucas and Luna explore the little-known story of the Jaffna kingdom, a Tamil dynasty that ruled northern Sri Lanka for centuries. Learn about King Cankili II's fierce resistance to Portuguese expansion, the brutal conquest of 1619, and the destruction of Hindu temples that followed. The episode examines how this forgotten kingdom shaped Sri Lanka's ethnic and religious landscape, and how its fall foreshadowed the island's colonial future. From the royal palace in Nallur to the execution of Cankili, this is a deep dive into a pivotal moment often overshadowed by the larger Sinhalese kingdoms.
