The Japanese Raid on Ceylon: WWII in the Indian Ocean

In April 1942, Japan's Imperial Navy launched a devastating surprise attack on the British colony of Ceylon — hitting Colombo and Trincomalee with carrier-based aircraft. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Easter Sunday Raid, the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes and cruisers Cornwall and Dorsetshire, and the strategic impact of the battle. They discuss Admiral Nagumo's fleet, the role of the Ceylon Defence Force, and how this attack accelerated the island's march toward independence. Learn about the only World War II battle that brought Japanese planes to South Asian skies, and how the war reshaped Ceylon's political landscape. Rich with local details and personal stories, this is a fresh look at a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's modern history.
