DâM-FunK on Snoop Dogg, Prince, Ice Cube & Keeping West Coast Funk Alive

What happens when Snoop Dogg sends you a SoundCloud message and you don't see it for six months? For DâM-FunK, it eventually led to 7 Days of Funk.

On this episode of The Truth Hurts, Jeff Weiss sits down with legendary producer, musician, and Stones Throw Records artist, DâM-FunK, for an in-depth conversation about the history of West Coast funk, his journey through the Los Angeles music scene, and the artists who helped shape his sound.

From playing keyboards on Westside Connection's "Let It Rain" alongside Ice Cube, Mack 10, and WC to collaborating with Snoop Dogg on 7 Days of Funk, DâM-FunK shares firsthand stories from decades of making music. He also reflects on the influence of Prince, Junie Morrison, George Clinton, and P-Funk, the origins of his Funkmosphere parties, his relationship with Peanut Butter Wolf and Stones Throw Records, and the rise of funk in mainstream pop music.

Along the way, DâM-FunK discusses growing up in Pasadena, the electronic sound of early LA hip-hop, building a career without a major-label deal, and why staying true to the music has always mattered more to him than chasing fame.
